Episode Notes

Shaykh Dr. Yasir Qadhi’s explicit lecture on the Tafsir of Surah Al-Ma`un and the prominence of the month of Muharram and Ashura makes for a very interesting listen.

“So woe to those who pray (but) who are heedless of their prayer – Those who make show (of their deeds)”

[Surat Al-Ma`un, verses 4-6]

In these verses, Allah SWT admonishes those that do pray Salah but don’t pay attention to it. They do not pay heed to the spiritual aspect of Salah and hence, khushoo in Salah is lost. Surely, Allah deserves infinite more respect when we stand in front of Him for Salah.

It was narrated that Abu Hurayrah RA said, The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:“The best fasting after Ramadan is the month of Allah Muharram, and the best prayer after the obligatory prayer is prayer at night.”

The Prophet ﷺ said: “For fasting the day of Ashura, I hope that Allah will accept it as expiation for the year that went before.”

Ibn Abbas RA said, “When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ reached Medina, he found the Jews fasting the Day of Ashura, so he asked them, ‘What is this day you are fasting?’ They said, ‘This is a tremendous day. Allah saved Musa and his people on this day and drowned Pharaoh and his people. Musa fasted it out of thanks, so we fast it too.’ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘And we are more deserving of Musa than you are.’ So he fasted this day, and ordered that it be fasted.”

It is narrated by Ibn Abbas RA that the Prophet ﷺ said,“Fast the Day of ‘Ashura and be different from the Jews by fasting a day before it or a day after it.”

The virtues of Muharram and Ashura are highlighted and we are acquainted with it in an elaborate manner.

La como para la come to Nova con woman alter Ilaha wa sallahu wa codifies fosun alima am about my dear brothers and sisters in Islam. The shorter students of the Quran, the ones that we recite frequently in our daily Salah watts are the ones that every single Muslim has

00:01:10--> 00:01:50

memorized and yet few of us understand. And so as a part of a series that I am doing here at MIT, that I'm concentrating on the Tafseer of these small schools, and we have done Alhamdulillah at least four or five students. And today I wanted to concentrate on another one of these small suitors of the Quran, one that is commonly recited and frequently memorized even by our children, and one that has profound implications simple meaning and message and a daily reminder of why Allah subhana wa tada revealed our book, and the sutra that we will do today is sudo tilde mt rune, which is one of the smallest sutras is one of the last sutras in the Quran. Barely seven eight suitors are left

00:01:50--> 00:02:35

before the Koran finishes, and it is an early makansutra and Allah subhana wa tada begins this surah by saying out of eight a lady you can they will be Dean, Have you not seen the one? Have you not seen the one who rejects the day of judgment? Now the meaning of Deen? Here is yo Medina, Malik el Medina, it is the day of judgment. And Allah azzawajal asks us have you not examined the one who denies the hereafter? Don't you see the one who rejects the day of judgment? And this type of phrasing in the Arabic language or Have you not seen is a phrasing that brings about attention and amazement. Our ATIA is meant to draw amazement, look at this person who has the audacity to deny the

00:02:35--> 00:03:16

Day of Judgment, be amazed at his situation, or at least the UK they will be din look at this person who rejects what Allah has said. And of course, the context of the sutra is Mexican, and therefore the primary audience is the Quran. So the primary audience of the sutra that are being referenced to the Muslims are the origin. And some of our classical scholars have mentioned specific names. A Buddha has also been one, but all of this is irrelevant. The point is the surah is general for all those who reject what Allah azza wa jal says, and in particular, the day of judgment, and every single verb in the surah is a continuous verb, you can the boo, boo, boo, which is a continuous

00:03:16--> 00:04:01

action. It is as if Allah is saying, rejecting God rejecting a law rejecting the Day of Judgment is not a one time instance that hold us you make up your mind there is no Day of Judgment. Rather, you are persistently rejecting the Day of Judgment, or at least you can do. He is continuously rejecting. He's continuously rejecting the existence of a law. He's continuously rejecting the truth of the prophets. He's continuously rejecting the Day of Judgment. So here Allah azza wa jal emphasizes that the proofs for the for the day of judgment for Allah subhana wa tada for the Koran for those who are so many, that somebody who denies them has to continually deny them. It's not just

00:04:01--> 00:04:48

a one time denial, don't you see the one who continues to deny again and again and again, they omit Dean and the meaning of Dean here is just not an ASAP, which means the Day of Recompense the day where you will get what you have earned. This is what Donna your Dino means in this context. And so in this same meaning, Allah says in Surah Fatiha Maliki Yo, Medina, the master of Judgment Day. So Allah calls Yeoman Yama, Yama, Dean, and the meaning of Deen here the day that you will get what you have earned. This is why it is called Deen and Allah subhana wa tada says, look at the one who has rejected this day, because the Koran affirms the day of judgment in so many different ways. In fact,

00:04:48--> 00:04:59

it is true to say that almost every single surah in the Quran affirms the Day of Judgment. It is correct to point out that hardly any page of the Quran exists except that

00:05:00--> 00:05:42

It mentions and affirms the day of judgment and look at how many different ways Allah has proved there will be a judgment date of the ways that a law proves that there's going to be a judgment is that he mentioned examples of nature in front of us. Allah mentions to us Don't you see the earth when the rain falls and the cycle of life begins? Allah subhana wa tada mentions the decomposition of bodies of the animals. Allah subhana wa Taala mentions the cycle of trees, the harvest the grain, all of this that comes out. So the one who is capable of doing this is capable of bringing about Judgment Day. In fact, Allah subhana wa tada links judgment to our own creation. Allah says, surely

00:05:42--> 00:06:27

the one who created for the first time can create all over again. Allah says, I am the one who begins the creation and then recreates it Amoeba that will Holocaust whom you read, who will who won't do it, the one who began the creation shall repeat it and it will be even easier for him. So of the proofs that there will be Judgment Day Allah is saying is the proof of life itself. And one of the more interesting proofs of judgment day in the Quran? Is the moral proof. The proof from moral arguments, Allah says in the Quran fnh Muslim inocle moogerah mean Malik MK Fatah, c'mon, do you think that we shall make righteous believers the same as evil sinners? What is the matter with

00:06:27--> 00:07:10

you? How are you judging? Now this is a profound proof for the Day of Judgment. And that is in this world, there doesn't seem to be full justice. And the fact of the matter is that many are the righteous, who live difficult lives, whose rights are taken away, and who actually might even die miserable deaths. What happened to the righteousness of what use was the righteousness? conversely, many are the evil people. Many are the tyrants, many are those who steal. Many are those who live immoral lives, and yet they seem to function normally in this world. And many times they might even die in their opulence they might die and it's still being in power, even though in their lifetimes

00:07:10--> 00:07:52

they had wronged hundreds, maybe even millions of people. And so Allah says, Do you really think that it's fair that we would allow the righteous and the sinners to be on par with one another? Have an edge I will Muslim in a curmudgeonly mean manner come, Kaif attack woman? What is the matter with you? How do you judge? Do you think a law whose name is an admin one of the names of Allah is the one who is just one of the names of Allah is the one who is just an Eliza wa jal is just and he loves justice, and Allah has forbidden injustice upon himself. How can the one who has forbidden injustice allow it to manifest itself so clearly in this world, if there were no judgement day? So

00:07:52--> 00:08:33

Allah is saying of the evidences of Judgment Day of the evidences there will be a Hereafter is that every single tyrant every single criminal, every single evil person shall have to answer to his creator to her creator about the crimes they have done. And similarly, every righteous person deserves to be rewarded, every moral person, every sincere person, every loving, tender person, they deserve to get the reward from Allah, they might not have gotten in this world, but when they see what they will get in the next, all of the problems of this world will appear trivial to them. And likewise, when the tyrant sees what is awaiting for him in the next, then all that he enjoyed in

00:08:33--> 00:09:16

this world will seem like a punishment for him. So of the evidences of Judgment Day is the moral dimension. And that is why believing in yom Okayama is one of the pillars of Islam. One of the fundamental six pillars of Eman every single Prophet came with the message of yom Okayama. It is in fact one of the primary messages especially of the early mccunn revelations. In fact, it is true to say that the bulk of mcca revelations only talk about Allah and yarmulke Yama and that's about it. That's the bulk of mccunn revelations. And that's why when you believe in your milk Yama, it brings about a whole change of life. When you don't believe in your meal kiama your character will also be

00:09:16--> 00:09:58

affected what happens when you don't believe in yom Okayama Allah subhana wa tada mentions for the early kalevi your earlier team, this is the one who repels the orphan, the one who denies judgment day that is the very same person who repels the orphan, you don't really a team, it literally it could mean physically push away, but it could also mean to show harshness to and that's really the meaning here, they have no sympathy for orphans. They have no kindness to those who are in deprived situations and therefore, repelling orphans. Allah has linked it to rejecting your milk Yama, literally, the one who rejects the Day of Judgment is the same person who repels the orphan who's

00:09:58--> 00:10:00

not kind to the orphan and we

00:10:00--> 00:10:43

We all know in our religion, that the orphan is one that is deserving of the utmost respect. And in fact, the point of this verse here of pushing away the orphan is that he has no mercy in his heart. And when a person is cold, when a person is callous when a person is cruel, showing sympathy to an orphan might actually be possible, but he won't even that has been deprived. Your heart has been sealed. And so Allah subhana wa Jalla says, For that he can let the door Olia team, the one who doesn't believe in piano is the one who will repel the orphan, which means his heart is lacking sympathy, His heart is lacking mercy. And this shows us that the believer is the exact opposite. The

00:10:43--> 00:11:22

believer is of a tender heart. The believer is of a merciful heart. The believer is the one who wants to take care of the orphan. And I do not need to remind you of the blessings of taking care of an orphan. How many are the verses of the Quran? How many are the Hadith? How many are the texts of our religion, that tell us that we should take care of orphans and the simplest one is that our Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said, on our cafeteria Team gohar, cheney filled gender. And he put his two fingers together and he said, I am the one who takes care of orphans, we will be together like this in Paradise, I will be together like this with the one who takes care of an

00:11:22--> 00:12:04

orphan. And I have encouraged myself and all of you numerous times my dear brothers and sisters, that Allah has blessed us with surplus wealth, let every one of us without any exception, every one of us sitting here, find out which orphan can his sponsor, contact an agency contact any organization, and it is only 3040 $50 a month and make this a regular for those who can afford more, let them do more. But it is a sign of faith to take care of orphans. It is a sign of faith to have a tender heart for orphans. And conversely, it is a sign of Kufa to have no sympathy for the orphan fanatical lady, your earlier team. Voila, voila, I'm in Miskin and this person who denies the Day of

00:12:04--> 00:12:48

Judgment, he also does not encourage the feeding of the poor. Now noticed here that taking care of the orphan and feeding the poor, both of these motifs are very common in the early uronic revelations. Allah azza wa jal says in the Quran, that of the signs of the believer of the signs of the true Muslim warrior, monitor IRA should be here miskeen, and we are team and zero, they feed their food to others, even though they need that food, even though they love that food. And I hope be here means they still love it, they need it, but they still give their food, who do they give it to miskeen and while your team and we'll see rock, a poor person, an orphan a prisoner in an altar a

00:12:48--> 00:13:33

more commonly watch Hilah we're giving you this food for the sake of Allah, we don't want your thanks. We don't want your gratitude, our pleasure. And our Lord is going to reward us for giving this food so of the constant or onic motifs of early Islam, taking care of the orphan and feeding the poor. Also notice the criticism, why is this man criticized, he does not encourage feeding the poor, which means that he's actually not being a part of society. He's not just selfish in his own money. He's not just stingy with his own time. He doesn't want others to do this as well. He does not encourage the feeding of the poor. You see, even if we don't have money, every one of us has the

00:13:33--> 00:14:15

tongue to encourage people with every one of us has the energy to help others. Even if we don't have the money, we can facilitate it. We can bring it about, we can bring a fundraiser, we can start a soup kitchen, if I don't have the money you do, and I can facilitate you in getting the money to the poor people. So Allah is saying, This man's heart is so hard. This man has gone so callous, that neither that neither does he take care of the orphan, nor does he encourage others to feed the poor. And this clearly shows us that a Muslim must be involved in the civic affairs of his society, a Muslim must get involved in solving the problems solving the hunger, solving the crime, solving the

00:14:15--> 00:14:58

poverty taking care of the orphans. And I remind you so many times I have said this in the hopes but when these verses came down, this is early mcca, who are the orphans who are the fukada who are the team they are emotionally Kuehn. And yet still the Muslims are being told take care of them. Our religion does not differentiate when it comes to the poor what religion they follow. It doesn't matter. A hungry child is a hungry child. An orphan is an orphan, a person of any faith who is in hard circumstances. That person deserves our sympathy. That person deserves our our support and allies there was never once in the Koran does He say they give only to the Muslim orphan, they give

00:14:58--> 00:15:00

only to the the

00:15:00--> 00:15:41

The poor person who is hungry, who happens to be a Muslim. Quite the contrary, when these verses came down, there were no prisoners of war except amongst the pagans, there were no orphans and there were no poor people except amongst those who are living in muck up those who are non Muslim, and therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, our religion clearly is telling us that a part of our job is to solve the problems of society that are of a general nature. For where you live more Selena Latina woman sadati himself one. So woe to those who pray for Wait, whoa. And some scholars have said wait is the name of a particular Valley in jahannam. But the point is that woe to them Be

00:15:41--> 00:16:23

careful, woe to those who pray. But then, of course, Allah goes on and clarifies those who are heedless regarding their solar heed lists regarding their prayer. And of course, our scholars have pointed out that this is a way to lean muscle lean is a classic example of understanding a verse and its context. It's a classic example of not misquoting the Scripture. And it is very easy for somebody to derive from this one verse that you shouldn't pray for when you lose a little muscle lean. If one were to read only this verse, and yet Allah subhanho wa Taala purposely mentioned this as a shock and awe for why no little masala and woe to those who pray, then your ears become

00:16:23--> 00:17:06

interested. What do you mean woe to those who pray? Why would Allah azza wa jal get angry at those who are praying? This is a classic instance of the dangers of Miss quotation. And this is not just for this verse for every verse and for every Hadith, you need to understand it in its context, Allah azza wa jal does not criticize those who pray. He criticizes those who are careless with regards to their prayers alladhina home, Ancelotti him sanghoon. Those who are careless and sanghoon means to be heedless. sanghoon means to not be thinking sanghoon means to be hasty, all of this, I need the word Salah in Arabic, it means to not pay attention, to not give it its due diligence. And

00:17:06--> 00:17:46

therefore, Allah subhanho wa Taala says, Those who are heedless about the prayer, which means they don't care what time is better. They don't care about the outcome, the word you bought the sunan. They don't care about the spiritual requirement. They just pray physically in their heart and mind is thinking about their work because of the stock exchange or their family. This is onsala t himself when they're not giving the due diligence that is due. They're not paying attention. And my dear brothers and sisters, when you don't pay attention, and you trivialize you demonstrate that you really don't have respect. Imagine if your boss or your boss's boss, the company's CEO, imagine if

00:17:46--> 00:18:28

the president Imagine if any famous person you had to visit such a person, you would make sure you are dressed to the occasion. very conscious of your looks very conscious of your demeanor very conscious of every word you say. Why? Because you're showing respect to this entity. Surely our Creator deserves infinite more respect, and we stand in front of him five times a day, every single time we stand up. Our Prophet says Adam said that either called a hydroquinone salata in hoonah ji raba who when one of you stands up to pray, let him know and realize that he is in a private conversation with his Lord you energy he is in a private conversation. So be careful how you engage

00:18:28--> 00:19:07

in that conversation. This is a hadith for Jamboard me careful how you engage in this private conversation. And therefore my dear brothers and sister's The one who stands up and he doesn't even care what time is it? He doesn't even care which manner I'm in. He doesn't even care what dress code he doesn't even care the pillars of the setup. He doesn't even care his mental state where is it his whole sure his ibadah surely this person is demonstrating that in his heart there is not the respect that is due to Allah subhana wa tada and this is why Allah is saying for way loulan masala lien alladhina hueman salata him sanghoon. Now notice here, that Allah subhanho wa Taala criticizes those

00:19:07--> 00:19:52

who are heedless about the Salah. How about those who are heedless of the Sadat, because notice the verb or the the, the the word that is used alladhina whom Ancelotti himself one, which means they're still praying, but they're praying heedlessly. What do you think will be the case of the one tidy kosala who has abandoned the Salah? What do you think we will learn who does not even lower his head to Allah subhana wa tada what will be his fate? And Allah azza wa jal is saying and this is even Massoud said this even Massoud said this even miss Rhodes said, Allah subhana wa tada sends his whale to those who still pray but pray imperfectly so what do you think will be the one who doesn't

00:19:52--> 00:19:59

even pray for why you do a little Mussolini alladhina Hillman Salatu himself Hoon Allah, Xena whom you are all

00:20:00--> 00:20:44

They are the ones who show off your own. They're showing off. In other words, even when they're praying, Allah azzawajal says they're not really praying for me. They're praying because they want others to see that they're praying. And our Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam talked about this disease of showing off. The Muslim does not show off his deeds for anyone other than Allah subhanho wa Taala. Our Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said that the matter that I fear the most from my oma is minor Sure. They said, What is minor szybko messenger of Allah, He said that a man stands up to pray, and that he beautifies his prayer only so that others can see him. Now he is praying to

00:20:44--> 00:21:23

Allah, and yes, even for Allah. But along with that for a lot, there's a little bit of beautification, he might make it a little bit longer, might add some extra Koran might make the record the can the sujood, a little bit more perfect. And in his heart, he's thinking, let this person see me so that he knows how great of a prayer I'm praying. And another example, which is unfortunately all too common, and that is in our fundraisers, that a person gives money. And his intention is not to Allah subhana wa Tada. His intention is that let people know I have given 10,000 5000 1000. And the fact of the matter is, our Prophet says that I'm said that Allah subhanho

00:21:23--> 00:22:11

wa Taala, is the least entity in need of should this is a Hadith, that Allah subhanho wa Taala is the least being who needs should. And if anybody does any action, for a law and to somebody else, I will process them said, a law leaves that deed to the somebody else, and he takes no part of it. So if you share an intention, which means you give your money, you fast, you pray for the sake of Allah, and for the sake of the people. Our Prophet says that said, Allah does not need that, and he shall be returned to you. And therefore have the signs of those who do not believe in the Hara. They are not sincere. And of the signs of those who believe in the ACA, they are sincere, because when

00:22:11--> 00:22:52

you reject the Day of Judgment, then why do you do any good deed? Think about it. When you don't believe in a law, you don't believe in God, you don't believe in your monthly ama? What is your only motivation for writing a big check? You want the people to know that this check has been written, let the people know I'm a generous person. And therefore this shows us brothers and sisters, when we believe in a law and the Yom Okayama. When we believe in the Day of Judgment, automatically, this will impact our sincerity, automatically this will impact our motivation. So faith and motivation go hand in hand. When we have a man, our class our sincerity goes up. And when we don't have a man

00:22:52--> 00:23:29

insincerity creeps in and our Prophet system said this is his greatest concern for my followers. He said, I'm not worried that you're going to return to idolatry after me, I'm not worried about that, that the oma is going to return to idols, it's not what he's worried about. Rather, he said, the thing that I'm the feared the most for you is this minor showing off, that your good deeds will not be done purely for the sake of Allah Subhana, which either alladhina whom your own those who are showing off now, we have to make a disclaimer here that a person said to our profit, so I send them on messenger of Allah, sometimes they do a good deed. And then somebody praises me and I can't help

00:23:29--> 00:24:13

feel happy for that praise. Our Prophet says, and I'm said tilaka, I do to wish for the moment that this is of the good news that Allah has blessed you with in this world, meaning what the man said he did the deed. Then somebody praised him, and he felt happiness, somebody praising, he did not do the deed for the praise. He did the deed for the sake of Allah. And it's so happened, somebody praised him. Somebody donates 10,000 100,000, somebody donates a large amount. And then another person comes in, says, JazakAllah brother, you did great. May Allah reward you. It is impossible except that you're gonna feel humbled, I did some good, you're gonna feel this in your heart. hamdulillah I did

00:24:13--> 00:24:56

some good. This feeling of good as long as it is linked to praising Allah. And you realize Allah blessed me to do this good deed. This feeling of good is not showing off. Because you didn't do it for the praise. The man said I do a good deed and then I am praised. And this is the difference between react and between what our process is being asked. And it is human nature. When somebody praises you for a good deal, you will feel a sense of happiness, this sense of happiness as long as it remains in its humble manner and you thank Allah for it, it is it is it is helpful, but if a person aims for this pleasure, and if a person donates or praise or fasts or does any good deed for

00:24:56--> 00:24:59

that sake, then this is the essence of Rhea alladhina, whom you are our own.

00:25:00--> 00:25:45

Why am ronelle maroon and they stop one another from doing mountain from Mountain and what is mountain? My own. Our scholars have said that mountain is a generic term. Maroon means the smallest of good deeds, the simple assistance. In fact even abus gave an example of an above said Maroon is that your neighbor comes to you asking for a utensil, and you say, No, I'm not going to help you out, I'm not going to lend this to this. So not only is a generic term, and my own means that they withhold the simplest of good deeds, they don't do anything good for the people. And the point here is that people who don't believe in Day of Judgment are typically more stingy and mean spirited,

00:25:45--> 00:26:27

they're not even going to help in that which doesn't harm you. And in fact, there was a study done two months ago, released by The Guardian newspaper, the British government did a study about people in England who are the most charitable, who are the most generous. And by a large margin, the Muslim community of England, turned out to be the most generous and the most charitable of the entire population. And for us, this is not surprising, we expect this and we'll law he will be disappointed if this didn't beat if this wasn't the case, we expect this because our religion is about charity, and our religion is about helping others. And our religion encourages us to help every single

00:26:27--> 00:27:05

person. And in another study that has been done here in America. And this was not done with any particular religion. It was done generically, those who are religious Christians, Muslims, Jews, those who are not religious, it was done generically. In another study done, they said that, again, by a large factor, those people who were religious, were more ethical and moral than those who are not religious. And those people who believed in a God, that they acted more morally, that in a situation where they could have gotten away with something, they did not do that because they're conscious of the one who created them. And this really, really brings us to the whole point here of

00:27:05--> 00:27:49

the surah, that if you notice, the surah is jumping between social issues and theology, and rituals all together, Day of Judgment, Salah, feeding the poor, helping the neighbor, notice every single verses to completely in a different arena. And the fact of the matter is, your attitude in any one of these areas, will depend on your attitude in the other areas, the one who believes in God will be more generous, the one who believes in the day of judgment will help orphans more, the one who believes that Allah is watching him will spend on the poor, and the one who's soft hearted and the one who's taking care of all of these needs automatically, it will reflect in their theology and in

00:27:49--> 00:28:34

their ethics. And look at this whole sort of from rituals to theology and athletes, to more amulet, every single verses talking about a different issue, and it is all being linked together. Why because our religion is a sum total religion, and of the primary lessons we learned from the sutra is that belief and actions, ethics and morality, Eman and Amell, are always linked together. And that is why our faith is a faith that cares not just about theology, but also about one's actions. Our Lord tells us throughout the Quran and over 70 verses that the righteous are those who in the Latina, M and o amino saw the heart, they have a man and they have a man they believe and they do

00:28:34--> 00:29:14

good, the two must go hand in hand. If you believe without doing anything, that belief is worthless. And if you do good, but you don't have the proper theology, that too is not what is required. What is required is the to go hand in hand of the blessings that we gained from this surah is that our religion involves both rituals and social causes, causes. Notice how Allah Subhana Allah begins the surah theology right under the UK, they will begin immediately it jumps to social causes fanatical that Theodore Odia team, he pushes the orphan, he doesn't take care of the poor, then it moves to rituals, he's not sincere in his Salah, then it moves back to civic duties, and he prevents those

00:29:14--> 00:29:59

and he prevents doing good from anybody who needs any good from him. So the religion involves all of these areas, your ethics, your manners, your morals, your theology, and your rituals. All of them make you a Muslim, and being hard hearted. From the sooner we learn is a sign of comfort and disbelief. Not caring about the troubles of people being selfish in your life. It cannot come from a heart of a true believer. The moment the Muslim is tender hearted. Our Prophet system was sent as Rama tellin al Ameen a mercy for all of mankind. This is what Allah describes our Prophet as as a mercy for all of mankind. And the Quran describes the Prophet system as ra o for Rahim, full of

00:29:59--> 00:29:59

mercy

00:30:00--> 00:30:42

mercy and compassion, full of humility for the believers and therefore my dear brothers and sisters, he who does not have this mercy does not have true faith. He whose heart is hardened cannot truly believe in Allah and Yom Okayama. And also my dear brothers and sisters, one of the simplest points we learn, even before a law legislated solid as filed, when they do sort of come down early MCE, when was solid legislated the 10th year of the data, the 10th year, three years before they hit your Salah was was made obligatory, and it's their own marriage as we know. And this surah came down early MCE, and yet Allah talks about the Salah, and not just the Salah, Allah says being lazy about

00:30:42--> 00:31:24

the Salah during the Salah. This is a sign of not believing in Allah subhana wa tada and therefore Salah is clearly linked to our Deen and it is the primary as our process of them said, the Salah is the mood it is the backbone of the religion and therefore the one who does not pray really does not have a religion and of course of the things that we learned from this sutra sincerity in all of our actions, whatever we do, it must be done for the sake of Allah and only Allah subhanho wa Taala May Allah subhana wa tada make us of those who benefit from the pseudo logical logic around him whenever anyone can be messy him he was declared Hakeem aku. Mateus marone was todo lo Halima de welcome What

00:31:24--> 00:31:28

is that? And we seem included mfsl fuutarou in Rahim.

Alhamdulillah Alhamdulillah hiwot heading ahead. Alfaro Samad, la de Damilola mula wollemi akula. Hakuna ahead, Roberto, if I can ask the brothers to move forward so that we have space in the back.

00:31:52--> 00:32:40

Brothers and sisters, we are now beginning the new Islamic calendar. And we are now in the month of Muharram. And this is a month that is a sacred month. In fact, our Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said that the best month to fast after that of Ramadan is shadow law hidden will how to run the month of Allah, Allah moharan. So notice, our prophets are some called more how to run the month of a law, and no other month has been called shadow law, other than moharram, he literally called it shahidullah moharram, the month of Allah moharram. And therefore, this is of the highest honors that has been given to this month, and no other month in the Islamic calendar has been given this honor.

00:32:40--> 00:33:19

And this month of Muharram is one of the four sacred months and in fact many of the Sahaba said, it is the most sacred of the four months. Obviously Ramadan is the most sacred month of the year. But Ramadan is not of the four sacred how long months, and more how many of the scholars said is the most sacred of all of the sacred months. And when Omaha top instituted the calendar, and as you know, the calendar was instituted 10 years after the Prophet solo seldom passed away or eight years after he passed away. When He instituted the calendar, they discussed which month should we begin the calendar with, and some said this and others said that and one opinion was Ramadan. And one

00:33:19--> 00:33:59

opinion was other months as well, until finally the most of the Sahaba. They said Muharram makes the most sense to begin the year with because of its blessings. And because it occurs right after Hajj. So it's as if it's a new beginning right after Hajj is a new beginning. And so they decided that the first month of the year shall be more how to run. And so more how to run from that time onwards has always been the first month of the year, and it is a blessed month. And it is a month where the profit system would fast regularly and had been a bus reported that I never saw the profits as I'm more concerned about fasting then on the day of Ashura, and in the month of Muharram, on the day of

00:33:59--> 00:34:44

Ashura, and in the month of Muharram. So our Prophet system was very concerned about fasting on the day of Ashura, and the day of Ashura literally means the 10th from Ashoka the 10th day, that's why it's called Ashura and it is the 10th day of Muharram and the 10th day of Muharram. The fasting on this day was made obligatory even before Ramadan it was made wajib in the first year after the hedgerow the prophets are made the 10th of Muharram obligatory wajib and everybody had to fast the first year, then Allah revealed Ramadan, so Ramadan became wajib and the next year moharram became recommended and not obligatory. So the first year of Islam, it was obligatory on all Muslims to fast

00:34:44--> 00:35:00

on the 10th of Muharram. And then in the second year, it went down from oblique from being obligatory to being recommended and strongly encouraged and our Profit System said that it It serves as a forgiveness for the sins of the previous year. And also my dear brothers and sisters on

00:35:00--> 00:35:39

This day of 10th of Muharram, our Profit System told us that Musa alayhis salaam will say Moses was saved from Pharaoh that new Hydra has slammed his ship landed on Mount Judy, that on these days, many incidents happen in the past that served as a day of celebration and rejoicing. And when our process and found out that the hood are fasting on the 10th of Muharram, as well, even though the blessings of the 10th were predating the knowledge of our prophecies about the food, when he found out that they were fasting, because the on this day, they said Moses was safe, and Pharaoh drowned. On this day, they said Moses was saved, and Pharaoh was drowned. So we take it as a day of

00:35:39--> 00:36:17

celebration, our Prophet system said, we have more right to Moses than you do. In other words, we are the true followers of Moses. And from that year onwards, he also encouraged everybody to fast on the 10th. And he also said, If I live one more year, I shall fast on the ninth and the 10th. The scholars say, to make our ritual different from the ritual of other religions and nations and therefore, ideally, it is good to fast the ninth and the 10th, even to our process and never did it because he said the Hadith, but he passed away the very year that he said it, so he never actually lived to the next year. But he said, If Allah allows me to live another year, I shall fast the ninth

00:36:17--> 00:36:54

and the 10th of Muharram. So those who are able to pass the ninth and the 10th, Hamdulillah, or the 10th, and the 11th, and hamdulillah. But if they cannot fast two days, then at least on the 10th, they should definitely fast on that day. And it is the day that insha Allah if you do it properly, and sincerely, the minor Sins of the previous year are forgiven. And no doubt this day also is a day in which a historical tragedy occurred. And that is the massacre of Hussein, but all the Allahu taala anhu a tragedy that inshallah we will talk about on this Sunday. But that tragedy does not have anything to do with the sanctity of this day. It was a coincidence that it happened on that

00:36:54--> 00:37:32

day. And the fact of the matter is that the death of Hussein is a historical tragedy. But the blessings of the 10th of Muharram and the fasting of the 10th of Muharram is separate to the historical tragedy that occurred, coincidentally, on the 10th of Muharram, in a later year of the hegira and that we will talk about inshallah, on Sunday at two o'clock we have a lecture about the massacre of Karbala, and unfortunately, people have taken this massacre to imply and to give meaning to Muharram. But Muharram was blessing and sacred before the massacre, and the massacre has nothing to do with the sanctity of the month and the fasting of the month and Ashura was the day that was

00:37:32--> 00:38:12

holy before Hussein was martyred on that day and therefore we as Muslims, we take the 10th of Muharram not as a day of mourning, but as a day of worship of Allah subhana wa tada as a as a bad as a day where we are conscious of Allah even more and we come close to Allah through our actions of worship through the action of fasting and therefore I remind myself and all of you that this week inshallah tada there will be the 10th of Muharram. And let us make sure we fast on the 10th and if we're able to on the ninth and the 10th or the 10th and the 11th but at least on the ninth and especially in this month overall, this is a month where overall our process I'm encouraged extra

00:38:12--> 00:38:55
