Hadith of Jibreel #01

Salam Alaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh My dear brothers and sisters, welcome to the first halakhah on the hadith of gibreel. My dear brothers and sisters, when you think about the words of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam without a shadow of a doubt, one of the most famous Hadith one of the most popular Hadith of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam is the hadith of gibreel. In fact, some of the scholars have called it half of Islam, a third of Islam, a quarter of Islam mean that it is a very weighty Hadith. And that is why I wanted to take the next five weeks to discuss this hadith of gibreel. So what is this hadith? Exactly? Let us find out on the authority of Amara

He said, One day while we were sitting with the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, there appeared before us a man whose clothes were exceedingly white, and whose hair was exceedingly black. No signs of journeying were to be seen on him, and none of us knew him. He walked up and sat down by the prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam resting his knees against his and placing the palms of his hands on his face. He said, Oh, Mohammed, tell me about Islam. The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said, Islam is to testify that there is no God but Allah, and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, to perform the prayers to pay there's a cat to fast in Ramadan,

and to make the pilgrimage to the house, if What if you are able to do so? He said, You have spoken rightly. And we were amazed at him asking him and saying that he had spoken rightly. He said, Then tell me about a man. He said it is to believe in Allah, His angels, his books, his messengers, and the last day and to believe in Divine destiny, both the good and evil there have, he said, You have spoken rightly. He said, Then tell me about your son. He said it is to worship Allah as though you are seeing him and while you still not while you see him, not yet truly he sees you. He said, Then tell me about the hour. He said the one question about it knows no better than the questioner. He

said, Then tell me about its signs. He said that the slave girl will give birth to her master

and that you will see the barefooted, naked, destitute herdsmen, competing and constructing lofty buildings. Then he took himself off, and I stayed for a time. Then he said, Omar, do you know who the questioner was? I said, Allah and His Messenger sallallahu alayhi wa sallam know best. He said it was jabril he came to teach you your religion. It was reported by Muslim brothers and sisters. Now that you've heard the hadith of gibreel. You can see how comprehensive it is and how many topics it actually covers. So we will be breaking down the topics as follows. So this first highlight tonight, insha Allah will be about an introduction to the Hadith, and an overview of the Hadith. And

the second halaqa inshallah, we'll be talking about the Pillars of Islam, and how we can facilitate performing the Pillars of Islam and the third halaqa, we will be talking about a man and what are the spiritual benefits of having Eman in the fourth halaqa we will be talking about the sun. And in the last halakhah we'll be talking about the signs of the day of judgment and some general benefits that can be extracted from this hadith. So let me start off with the context of this hadith in my Muslim Mahima holla when he narrates this Hadith, he mentioned a story behind it, that one day the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was with a gathering of companions. And these gathering was

filled with many companions who were awestruck, meaning that they were sitting there, but they weren't really engaging with the prophets of Allah who I knew set up. They just wanted to look at him. So as the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam asked them, Do any of you have any questions, they were just sitting there in awe of his presence, sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, and that is when gibreel came in human form. And then this hadith took place, as reported by Ahmed mahatama, the Allahu anhu. This Hadith was also reported by Abu huraira and some of the other companions of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. So it was an incident that became well known. So let us see

just from the context of this hadith taking place. What we actually learn, we learn from this is that it is from our Deen to ask questions, and it is from our Deen to take this opportunity to actually educate people as well. So you can imagine you're sitting with your family, one of the great things that we can do is start by asking a question, you can ask how your day was, you can ask them, you know how your Salah is going, you can ask them, what did you learn, and you engage in conversation, and this is how relationships are built. And that was one of the objectives of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, as he was welcoming people into Islam and is welcoming new

communities that were perhaps going to be moving to Medina as well. building those relationships was very important. So now as we get to the hadith of gibreel, we see

In the introduction of the Hadith, that gibreel came in human form. And we see from this aspect that it is possible for angels to take human form. So they have a natural angelic form that Allah subhanaw taala has given them, some of the angels have a few wings, some of the angels have many wings. And we know that the angels are made of light. And the normal case scenario is that you will not be able to see angels in their natural and pure form. Yet the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was able to do so as it reported in some of the narrations of when he saw jabril. And how large jabril actually was compared to just regular creation and how strong Djibouti actually was

that with his wink, he would be able to shatter a mountain and turn it over. So that is how large the angels were. So we see that God comes in human form, and he comes as close as he possibly can to the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. And this shows us that from the etiquettes, of seeking Islam, and seeking knowledge is that the students to take take it upon themselves to come as close to the teacher as possible. gibreel got so close to the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam, that his knees were touching with the needs of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, and he placed his hand on the thigh of the Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam, as he engaged with him, so meaning

you're paying your utmost full attention, and other description has given them jabril is that gibreel was wearing extremely white clothing and had extremely black hair, the part of the white clothing, it signifies that of purity. So when we seek knowledge of Islam, we should be dressed in our best clothing, making sure that we look nice, and we smell nice that we've taken a bath and a shower. In my mind, they call him a holla, one of the great imams of Islam, when he would teach he would put on his best clothes and his best fragrance. And this is what he would do to present his good deeds to Allah subhana wa Tada. So this is something to think about that when we go to the

masjid. What type of clothing are we wearing? What type of shape are we in? Are we presentable? Do we smell nice, it is from good etiquette, and good manners that we do. So then as for the blackness of the hair, when the scholars comment on this, they comment on the fact that gibril as he took this human form, he took a very beautiful, like representational or, or manifestation, that His hair was black, it was silky, and it could be seen, and there was no signs of travel when he came to the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam. So he was distinct from all of the other companions, and no one recognized him. And this shows us that Subhanallah sometimes people will be shy, and it will be that

person that comes from a distance that perhaps no one else knows, that facilitates the dialogue and the discussion as jabril and his Salam did. So now we've gotten to the point where gibreel is about to converse with the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam and inshallah in the next halaqa.
