saving yourself from his punishment. And that is why it's often translated as being fear, fear of Allah, meaning that you're fearing his punishment, but it is greater than just simple fear. Because there is a constant state of awareness of Allah azza wa jal, that then leads you to action leads you and that's why some of the self said in the definition of Taqwa it was erected between yourself and Allah's punishment, a barrier.
