As someone who has grown up in this area, I can say that I've truly been blessed to be a part of this community. I know last week, brother Farhad spoke briefly about this institution's history and he took me on a little stroll down memory lane. I remember when it was hosting if tours at Father Michael McGivney. And I remember when this building was under construction and the different phases of construction.
And this trip down memory lane gives me a chance to reflect on how blessed I am to have grown up around countless scholars and teachers. This institution has not only been benefiting youth but people of all ages for many decades now.
This institution offers classes and resources for everyone from children to seniors. And there is so much to learn from the numerous scholars and teachers that are here. One of those scholars I grew up learning from is the speaker tonight and it is always a pleasure to hear him speak. Dr. Abdullah Hakim quick as a historian, social activist and religious leader of North of African and Native American descent. He has traveled to over 58 countries doing research and delivering lectures to various communities. His qualification in Islamic Studies comes from a BA in the Islamic in in the Islamic University of Medina, Saudi Arabia.
And his history background is shaped by an MA and PhD from the History Department of the University of Toronto.
Dr. Abdullah is currently a senior instructor at the Islamic Institute of Toronto. I would now like to hand it over to Dr. Abdullah Hakim quick.
Smilla Rahmanir Rahim Al hamdu Lillahi Rabbil Alameen
wa sallahu wa Taala Allah say that more saline were early he was happy about it was ALLAH. I'll praise the due to Allah Lord of the worlds and peace and blood
sings be showered upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad, on his family, his companions and all those who call to his way and establish his sunnah to the Day of Judgment. As to what follows my beloved brothers and sisters, I begin with the greeting words of the righteous As salam o aleikum, wa Rahmatullah.
Alhamdulillah. It is again another great blessing and privilege to be here for the Iftar on Saturday in Ramadan
Alhamdulillah it is one of the great activities happening here in the Islamic Institute of Toronto.
And I want to welcome our friends and guests who are here from different parts of North America, different parts of the world. Also to welcome our brothers and sisters from the Deaf Muslim community who are here today Alhamdulillah we have our interpreter, we will excellent job.
And we pray that Allah would accept us in this month and would continue to strengthen our community.
Allah subhanaw taala tells us in the second chapter of the Quran Ooh, the bIllahi min ash shaytaan the regime, shahada Ramadan Allah the own Xena fie hilker en houden leanness what big nuts and min alHuda one Farrakhan that this the month of Ramadan is the time in which the Quran was revealed
guidance to humanity
and clear proof from the guidance and from the criterion that separates truth from falsehood.
And so this month is not just a time of abstinence. It's not just the time of staying away from food and drink.
But it is a time of decision.
It is an extremely important time.
And Leila Takada, the Night of Power and destiny is when the decisions are being made for the coming year.
All of this is happening in the month of Ramadan.
And so Allah tells us very clearly
in his glorious book Yeah, Are you her Latina Armani? Yeah, you heard EMA on a taco la wob turbo la Hill was sila where Jaya he do feasability de la la come toughly Han Allah tells us are you who believe, have the consciousness of Allah and seek a means of coming close to him
and strive in the path of Allah in order that you would be successful.
And so three things one is taqwa, the consciousness of Allah.
The second is to gain a means of coming close to Allah.
And fasting is one of the best ways to come close to the Creator of the heavens and the earth.
Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him told us in a hadith could see
that all of the actions of human beings are for themself. Currently Ahmed ibn Adam lo Illa song, so all the actions of the children of Adam or for themselves, except for fasting, for inner who Lee will enter at Zb.
This fasting is specially for me.
And I will especially reward for the fasting.
So this is a special time for us. It's a blessing for us. It's a special condition that Allah puts us in during this month.
And the completion of the verse that we were reading is that you have Taqwa
you seek a means to come close to Allah. And then you strive in the path of Allah, you struggle in order to be successful.
So seeking the means of closeness to Allah is not the end. It should lead us to action.
This month is a time of decision and a time of action.
It was the time when the Quran was revealed in the month of Ramadan
fasting itself became an important activity after Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him migrated to Medina.
And he peace be upon him had nine Ramadan's, the Prophet SAW Salem fasted nine times. And
it was a time of increased activity,
you would expect
that it's fasting,
it would be the opposite. Because we can't eat and we can't drink all day for all of this time. If you were to explain this to the average Canadian, that there are so many people who are not eating and drinking all day, they wouldn't believe what you're saying.
They say well, at least a little bit of water,
or at least a little bit of food.
Nothing.
And so this is a special condition that Allah put us in, and what it does, it releases the body.
So it actually puts you in a better condition. Once you manage to fast once you can manage getting up in the morning,
doing the fast making your if taught not over eating, and you manage the fast, it'll make you stronger than you were before.
And for the Prophet SAW Solomon, his companions, it was a time of increased activity and a time of decision
in many parts of the Muslim world today,
especially if you're in the hot countries,
some of the Muslims they have the wrong understanding of fasting.
In some countries
in the morning, after morning prayer,
the fast begins
and the person goes to sleep
and they sleep all the way till salata Lucha
and then they get up. And if Allah has mercy on them, they make their press. Then in some cases, they go back to sleep.
And they sleep all the way to Lhasa prayer. And if Allah had mercy on them, they make Arsa
after us or they're busy, they're making their samosas they're making their drinks, they are preparing themselves, but the actual waking hours of the fast was only between ASAN and market it
that's the wrong understanding
of what it is supposed to be.
It is not hibernation.
It is a chance to come out of ourselves. And we look at the life of the prophet Sal Sal them and we will see this and even after his time,
we will see that it is a time of decision
right from the beginning.
Truth was separated from falsehood. And in the first year after the Hijrah after they had migrated to Medina.
There were threats being made against the Muslims in a place called Safe and Baja.
And so the Prophet SAW Selim sent his uncle Hamza radula, one with 30 riders. And they went to Safehold Baja to try to deal with this threat that was being made against the community. So this is not an easy thing. If you're a lazy person. If you're fasting and you're sleeping, how could you do this?
Hamza rhodiola, one
went to the area
and cleared it up. There was no
misunderstand misunderstanding.
And he was able to come down the Bedouin tribes who were about to attack Medina.
This was in the month of Ramadan
in the second year after the hijra,
the second year after the Hijrah
Abu Sufian,
the leader of Quraysh, leader of the people of Mecca
he had a plan. He said since Muhammad and his followers left Makkah, they left all of their goods. So let's take their goods and sell them. So we went to the homes of the Muslims
And he stole their goods.
And he took it on a caravan to Syria.
And on his way back from Syria
after he had gained a large amount of money,
he heard that the Prophet peace be upon him, was about to meet him and the caravan because Rasulullah saw Selim gathered together 313 men
to meet the caravan on the way back from Syria.
But Abu Sufian, who was very clever person, he found out about this before he reached Arabian Peninsula.
And so he sent word to Mecca.
And the Mexican people were told that Muhammad and his people were about to steal their goods. And so, they put together an army
of over 1000 men
with 300 horses, 300 horsemen,
this is facing 313 people,
when the word came to the Prophet peace be upon him,
that this army was coming, he sat with the Sahaba and he said, I did not bring you here for this, I brought you here to only take back what is yours are you with me and they said we will follow you to the ends of the earth.
And so, this confrontation, which is known as your ml for a con,
and that is the separation of truth from falsehood.
It happened in the month of Ramadan.
So this is a time of heightened activity.
Allah subhanaw taala then bless the believers, the Muslims are on the high ground.
The Mushrikeen were on the low ground have better place was called better.
Allah sent the rain at night. On the high ground, the rain was very soft and light. On the low ground, the rain was very hard.
So when the soft rain hit the sand it became like cement.
But when the hard rain hit the sand it became like mud.
And Allah began to put fear in the hearts of the disbelievers. And so 1000 warriors with weapons and armor, and 300 horses face 313 Muslims with very little equipment.
And Allah bless them with a great victory.
It is reported
that the angels were involved in this Bala Iike. And it came in the Quran. But the Muslim even said, we believe that but we saw things happen, but we didn't see anything. And there is a report
of a Mexican who later became Muslim.
And he said at the Battle of better
we saw amongst the Muslims, there were people with green turbans.
And when they struck, they struck with power not like us.
And when they found somebody who was wounded by this angel, the wound was surrounded by a burn mark
because of the strength.
So Allah descended the angels on this situation in Ramadan,
Yeoman for a con
and separated the truth from falsehood.
In the second year after the hijab also,
Allah revealed
the verses concerning the cattle fitter
that not only must you would fast, but at the end of the fast you should pay a certain amount of wealth given to the poor and the needy.
And so this was a type of purification that happened in this blessed month.
And Allah subhanaw taala continued to bless the believers for the next few years, until the fifth year after the Hijrah.
This is coming now in Ramadan again
word came to Medina
that the Mushrikeen of Makkah, we're putting together an army of over 10,000 warriors. This was the final solution for them. Because there were not 10,000 people living in Medina.
So this is more soldiers than the whole population of Medina
came to the Prophet peace be upon him. He gathered his followers together,
see how they function in Ramadan. And he explained to them what is about to happen.
And one of the great companions a Persian men name Salman Rushdie, Allah one. He said that we in Persia when we are surrounded by a huge enemy, we build a trench.
We build a hunt duck,
and it makes the large army become small.
So the Prophet peace be upon him took this advice. And Medina had on the eastern west side, it had lava, volcanic lava that turned into sharp stones.
So the chorus could not come in the eastern West,
the southern side of the city, there was a treaty with the Jewish tribes. So they could not come in the South. There was a treaty.
The northern side was open. So they began to dig a trench with their hands with very simple tools. It was winter time.
Because Ramadan changes, it happened to be in cold weather, and they're fasting.
If you were a lazy person, you'd have a problem there.
But they began to dig this trench in order to protect the city from this huge army that was about to come.
While they were digging the trench
they found some big stones. And they couldn't break the stones. They needed somebody really powerful to move the stone.
And they saw sell man walking along. Sell man was powerful man. If you look at his life story, he traveled all the way from Persia into Syria, so many things in his life. He was highly intelligent but also physically strong.
So the MaHA jurien The people from Mecca they were breaking stones, and they saw sell man and they said come to a sell man sell man Mina sell man is one of us. Because he made a migration to right. He migrated all the way from Persia
The Ansara the people of Medina, they said no cell man was here in Medina when the Prophet came he had already he was part of the people in Medina cell man men nah. He's one of us. So come to us and help us.
Prophet Muhammad peace and blessings be upon him I was walking along.
And he looked at this and he said la Salman Mina. I love bait.
He said Sal man is one of us. From my family. I handle bait. This is a big statement. Because I look bait is very important description to a lot of people right? You know you say Sharif, or you say Sayed
for some it's their Imams.
He said, Sal man. He's a Persian man. He grew up as a fire worshiper.
He accepted Islam. But the Prophet SAW salem said, This person is part of my house.
And then the big stone was still there. So the Prophet SAW Selim himself, instead of sitting on a throne, he took the chisel himself and he hit the stone and a spark came. And he said, I see
the Persian Empire opening up and the Muslims taking over Persia. Hit it again.
And he said, I see the Roman Empire opening up. Every time he hit it, he saw the world submitting to the Muslims. And that was strange. Because how can you talk about Persia and Rome when his 10,000 era Bedouins coming to destroy you.
But that is the prophethood he has the greater picture of things.
And so
Allah subhanaw taala blessed to believe is to complete this. By the time Ramadan was over, and the 10,000 came
when Abu Sufian saw the trench, he said, This is not the way of the Arabs.
This is not an Arab thing to do. We don't dig trenches. So he knew that with the Prophet peace be upon him where people of different nationalities have different understandings.
And Allah subhanaw taala sent the wind sent rain and the conditions was so terrible,
that the azab with the Kurdish they retreated and Medina was saved
in the eighth year after the Hijrah,
Muslims are fasting.
And the oppression of Quraysh had gone to an extreme.
And so the Prophet peace be upon him said now we will go to Mecca, and we will open up Mecca,
we will go back to our homes.
And we will turn
this house back to the house of Allah.
But it was Ramadan.
So if you had people who were sleeping in their beds, and you had to wake them all up,
you wouldn't be able to do this.
But the Muslims were ready.
And they left
for Mecca.
On their way, because they're traveling and he got close to Mecca. They could break their fast if they wanted to. Because you have Mustafa whenever you're traveling, remember, you can break your fast if you're sick, or if you're on a journey, but they're still in Ramadan, right? They're still in a fasting mode.
And they reached Mecca.
And they camped.
And Abu Sufian came out to the camp. And he went to the Prophet SAW Selim as the leader of Kadesh. And he saw the Muslims and he said, I surrender.
And he basically asked for the permission that the Prophet peace be upon him would not do anything to him.
So the Prophet SAW Selim said go back to Mecca and tell the people in Mecca, if they go to your house, they are safe.
If they shut their doors, they're safe if they come to the Kaaba, they are safe. And the Prophet SAW Selim came into Mecca. This is the 21st of Ramadan. It's the 21st
the odd nights or days.
He came into Mecca with his head bowed, he was wearing a black turban
and his head was bowed. And he came into Mecca, and said to the people, what do you think about me? And they said, You are the best of us. You are kind.
And he said, is horrible for intimate tilaka. He said go you're free.
You are free.
And he said the people of Mecca free.
And it was a victory, the taking of Mecca with no fighting.
And the people saw this compassion that he had. And shortly after that, they started to come into Islam in large numbers.
And while they were there in Mecca,
they went to the idols, lat and Ursa and Sua and all of the pagan idols and they cleared them out. They destroyed the idols, made it clear that Mecca this would be a place for the belief in one God for as long as Allah wills
this great victory Fatone Maccha it how
penned in the month of Ramadan
the ninth year after the Hijrah,
eight member of fats Omega nine,
the ninth year after this traumatic event, word came that a new enemy was coming.
That the Roman Empire was about to bring 100,000 men into Arabia,
to completely destroy everything.
The Prophet SAW Salem took consultation with his companions. And they decided not to wait for the Romans. But they would go out
to meet the Romans. And they went out
to a place called Tabuk,
which is now in northern Arabia.
Allah put fear in the hearts of the Romans. And they never came.
This was in the month of Ramadan.
In the heat of the desert, about to face 100,000 is decisive time. Ramadan is decisive. And Muslims saw themselves as empowered by their fast
and in this time as well. When they returned
to Medina, people were coming into Islam.
Large numbers were coming
to people have a TA F. And that is the place that Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him went to
in the Meccan period. When things were bad, he went to ta F. And the people in ta if stoned him.
And he forgave them.
During this time, in Ramadan, they came into Islam in large numbers.
And they wanted to fast right away more to make so that
they became some of the power for Muslims.
There was also a delegation that came from Yemen from the south.
This term a delegation was the him you're right kings to him Yosh famous kings of Yemen.
They came and they embraced Islam.
The Prophet SAW Selim realizing there's a great opportunity. He sent his cousin Ali ibn Abi Tala Carmela who Agia He sent him to Yemen, to do Dawa
in the month of Ramadan, so Ramadan was a decisive time. It was decisive in the month of Ramadan. And it is reported that on the hands of Ali radula, one
that one tribe, the tribe of Hampden, every man, woman and child embraced Islam altogether
in the Dawa of Ramadan.
So Ramadan is also a time of calling to the good, forbidding evil. It's a decisive time
when people can see the truth of Islam
and that is how it was during the life of Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him. His companions continued this.
The Romans came back from the north and they wanted to attack
and ALLAH blessed to khalifa Omar Al Khattab, Radi Allahu
Allah blessed him with the leadership of Islam.
And the Muslims went forward. Abu Zubaydah Ibn Al Jazeera Rhodiola one
they defeated the Romans and they opened up Jerusalem.
They opened it up. Now, you know my cell axon right now what's happened to my cell axon right.
From the time of Omar been a hot tub, they opened up master Al Aqsa, they opened up Jerusalem.
But they did not smarter people.
They were not against the Christians and the Jews.
They allowed the Christians to continue in their worship
and the patriarch, the highest religious authority in Jerusalem at the time. He said I want to give the keys of the city to your league
da
because this is a holy place.
So they said we're to Omar bin al Khattab read the Allah one.
And Omar was not sitting on a throne with slaves in front of him.
He was under a tree with his turban, and a rock and just laying down sleeping, because he had no fear of the people. Because he was a just leader. Not like some of our leaders today. When the leader wants to go from his office, to his home, the soldiers are standing there from early in the morning.
Because he's afraid of his own people.
But Omar was not afraid.
And then Omar made his way, Ramadan,
he made his way to Jerusalem.
And he would ride and his servant
would be pulling the animal and taking care of things. And then they would shift the next day. And Omar would pull the animal and the servant would ride. See the Justice what King would do this. Think of the kings in the world with their slaves. This is a mirror meaning the Khalifa.
And he is pulling a slave or a servant, not a slave or servant
pulling him
and when they reached Jerusalem, because they would shift one day and back and forth, it was the servants time to write. And Omar was supposed to pull the animal. Think about this. And you come to the Gates of Jerusalem, a miracle movement in the servant said, No, Omar, you right?
Because you're the leader of the believers. And Omar said, No, it is your Huck. It is your rights.
It is your right to write. And so we entered into Jerusalem, pulling the servant on a horse look at this humility. That's the leaders of Islam.
He came into Jerusalem pulling the servant and he went to the patriarch and they were at the Church of the Nativity.
This is the holiest church in Christendom.
And
the patriarch, the bishop said, Omar, I know it's afternoon, you can make your afternoon prayer come into the church. So you can make your prayers in the church. No problem. Oh Ma said no.
Because if I make my prayer in this church, then the Muslims will think that this should be a masjid. And they're going to change your church into a masjid. See how he thinks for somebody who's not a Muslim. And so Omar prayed on the ground outside.
And if you go to Bethlehem today, the Church of the Nativity on one side, and Masjid Omar on the other side.
So the place where Omar prayed is now a masjid.
And he will hamdulillah
was able to take this responsibility for the protection of the city
and the protection of the people. And he made it work off. He made it a trust that is in the hands of all of the believers, not just the people who are living there. But believers all over the world are partially responsible
for Master Luxor.
And so Allah subhanaw taala has blessed this OMA with activity in Ramadan, and with decisive moments in the sacred month. You can only pray that Allah azza wa jal would give us this strength and would give to the Muslim world strength and decisive action
to come out of their sleep, whether it's political sleep, or economic sleep, to come out of this sleep
and to do what has to be done, to bring justice in the land.
And so we thank Allah subhanaw taala for this, these moments, and we pray that Allah would forgive us for any mistakes that we have made. We pray that Allah would accept our fasting
Rabbana Taco Bell Mina
Salah tena Rabbana Taco Bell, C. Yamuna. Rabbana Taco Bell. Melina Kula haffi Shari Ramadan, O Allah accept all of our deeds are fasting, our charity in this month will Allah forgive us and clear our slates and bring strength and victory to the Muslims. I leave you with these thoughts and I ask Allah to have mercy on me and you was salam Wa alaykum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh
Joseph aloha and Dr. Abdullah and I think everyone can see why I say it's always a pleasure to hear you speak
you know Ramadan really is a special time and I pray that Allah subhanaw taala allow us to witness many more Ramadan inshallah. At this time, I will now hand you over to brother forehead with further instructions on what follows a lot tomorrow
I will be let him initiate on the regime Bismillah R Rahman r Rahim Al hamdu Lillahi Rabbil Alameen wa Salatu was Salam O Allah shortfill mbi it will mursaleen Sayyidina Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa Salam wa ala alihi wa sahbihi wa sallam my respect to to you brothers and sisters and children as salam aleikum wa rahmatullah he would occur to.
So once again, we'll Hamdulillah we are all gathered here in this beautiful gathering, in this blessed month of Ramadan. And, you know, over the course of the many weeks, and the many days Alhamdulillah, we have seen the beauty of a community coming together, not only here, the IIT, but also in other parts of the of the of the country, in other parts of the world,
coming together, and breaking the fast together, performing Salah together, and this is the beauty of Islam. So Inshallah, I want to point out to you, especially to our young brothers and sisters, that our MC for today, brother, Abdullah Hamid, you know, was one of the youth who grew up in the masjid here Hamdulillah. Today, he can stand before you confidently and speak to you. And this is what we're doing here at the Islamic Institute of Toronto. If you take a look outside at our volunteers, if you take a look at the parking, if you take a look at the programs that we are doing, there is an interesting dynamic between our experienced volunteers and the youth. And then the
passing of the baton Alhamdulillah. This is how we can do effective succession planning. So that those of us who have been here forever Hamdulillah, we can pass the baton on to brothers like Abdullah, and many others who are working inside and outside, just Alchemilla higher. And so I encourage you, mothers and fathers, make this budget make this institution, a place for your children. We have so many programs that are happening here, education, social and recreation programs. This is the place where your children should be. Because this is the vision that we have. When we built this institution. We built it with the vision that it will be a place to play, to
ponder and to pray. A place where your children can come. They can feel comfortable to play and interact with each other. They can learn and they can they can pray. And so in sha Allah, this is our vision. And I want to ask you Alhamdulillah to support this vision. Because as I said last night, it's a dream that has not yet fully materialized. We have so much ideas about what we can do with this institution, not only for the people of Scarborough, not only for the people of Toronto, not only for the people of Canada, but internationally. In fact, some of the courses that have been taught here by Dr. Abdullah Hakim, quack, and others have reached different continents. We have
students who have logged on from Australia, students who have logged on from Indonesia, students who have logged on from Nigeria, and many other places of the world. And so therefore, Islamic Institute of Toronto is truly international. And we are providing an international service with a local focus. So you have given before Alhamdulillah but we want to ask you to give again, in sha Allah as the month progresses, as we know, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was the most generous
But he was more even more generous in this month of Ramadan. And we know that from the Hadith of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam, that charity will never decrease your wealth. This is an absolute statement from the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam based on the revelation that if you give charity, your wealth will never decrease. One of the great hopes that we have in our faith, if you give charity, your wealth will never decrease. And Allah invites us, Allah subhanho wa Taala gives us an invitation. You know, when we give, when we believe in Allah, and we do the good work, Allah invites us Wallah who Yeah, there are all Isla Dar Salam, O, Allah invites you to the abode of
peace. Well, yeah, howdy ma Iesha de la serata Musa team, and He guides those whom we will He wills to this trade pass. So the invitation is there for all of us.
Are we going to RSVP there is no deadline for us to RSVP to Allah. But the sooner that you do that it is the better. So Allah invites you to Dar Salam, the abode of peace, and He guides whomsoever He wills to the straight boss. So inshallah I encourage you to continue to give to continue to be engaged in this institution, and to continue to have your children your family be part of this institution, this is your institution, and Insha Allah we are here for you and we want you to be here for us just Alchemilla higher we have a minute more for the oven. So at this time I want to ask if everyone has a date to break their fast or if you have access to some water if you don't please
raise your hand if you don't have dates we have a brother here you want to water yes inshallah. So the brother here if one of our volunteers can help him to get to get some water Inshallah, we also have a water station at the side. So you can go there I would also ask everyone to stand up and make make lines so that we can maximize the space if you have your water bottle with you your prayer or your date just take it with you stand up and come as close as possible to the front so that we can maximize the space in sha Allah
Yes, you take insulin
So brothers and sisters ensure there is no gaps in front of you or at the side of you just come up insha Allah and make the lines we are going to call the other know
and we will give you more directions after the Sunnah prayers in sha Allah in terms of how we will do the Iftar
yes
yes if you could move up in sha Allah if you can move up everyone can move up just one more. We are expecting some more people to come in in sha Allah so
long length battle
