in
common.
So I begin as the Prophet taught us,
by praising Allah, the Almighty, who created us, and
humbly ask for guidance, forgiveness, help.
And
we also began by invoking God's peace and blessings upon His Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa sallam
who taught us
and came to us
as a guide,
to pull humanity out of
the darkness of misguidance
into the light of guidance.
And I bear witness that there is no god worthy to be worshipped except Allah alone.
And I believe it was that Prophet Muhammad is His servant, and His Messenger.
The best, or the most truthful of speech is the word of God.
And the best of guidance is the guidance of His Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him.
Then, we are always reminded
by the verse that calls upon those who believe in God, to be mindful of him, fear having a show respect and reverence to God, the Almighty. And we're also told that we should struggle to maintain our state of submission to God, to maintain submission to God, and the individual level
and die not except in a state of Islam, that is a state of submission
by the brothers and sisters, Today,
I would like to
and of course, would like to welcome our non Muslim guests who came to join us today, from Fullerton College,
spending some time with us learning about some of the basics of our religion and our traditions.
And just want them all to know that they're welcome anytime.
hamdulillah here at the Islamic Institute of Orange County, we have open door policy we welcome everyone who wants to come and learn or
wants to come and
find
find answers for themselves, right, whether it be any of our community members, or any of our
any of the members of our society at large. So everyone is welcomed here.
And that's something that we are very proud of. So today what I want what I wanted to talk talk about was
a concept before before I speak about the concept, I just want to say it's
It's very challenging to talk about this particular concept and many other great virtues, that our religion teaches us in a time where
lines are very blurred, and
many people don't seem to know,
their boundaries, boundaries are not clear, there used to be a time where, even if people were did not have,
did not follow divine guidance, they at least were very clear when it comes to certain models or concepts or principles.
So, our Prophet came to a society that used to worship idols worship trees, worship, stones, and,
and different,
different some of them even worship, various celestial bodies. But
they still had some, some morals and some principles that they would not compromise, one of which, for instance, was
respecting the sacred months. So we happen to be in the month of Russia, for instance, it's a sacred month. So showing respect to the sacred months and not shedding blood work, I'm talking about people who, who did not necessarily follow divine guidance or deviated from divine guidance, right. So.
So they had they showed this, this reverence of respect for the divine for these for the sacred months. So today, I wanted to talk about the concept of respect in general.
Because it seems to be something that is missing at all level,
at the individual level,
you know, within the family
unit, and then at the site level, and we even see it, manifesting itself at bigger levels.
And it's, it's quite shocking.
It's quite disturbing, and it's painful.
So we need to start somewhere.
One of the
realities of our time is lack of respect for human life,
sanctity of life losses, meaning
that's because respect as a principle is missing. And this is something that needs to be talked about more often. And we need to remember that starts early on.
So
does Islam teaches respect?
This deep
sense of admiration for someone or something
and
maintaining its sanctity or making sure that we commit ourselves to fulfilling is our duties towards it?
Whatever that is, because respect does not only pertain to other you know, human beings, but also it goes beyond that. That's at least what I believe our Prophet peace be upon him, taught us.
And first, the first
or first and foremost we have to show respect to Allah subhanho wa Taala.
Were told in the Quran,
in the story of Noah, and the story of Noah, Halle Salah that
when Noah demanded or asked his people to worship God and fear God,
and one of the points that he made was, he said, mal akula todos una de la hora.
What is the matter with you that you do not show respect to God?
What happened? Why don't you show respect to the one that creativity?
So,
God the Almighty deserves our utmost respect, admiration, and he or she who do not realize
what God has done for them. And over the past few weeks, we talked about how a lot of the Almighty says that he is the one that gave you everything that you have when I attacked him, including myself. And he gave you of all things that you asked for, and even things that we didn't ask for. And if you remember, if you recall, two or three weeks ago, I made the point that most of the elements in our lives that we enjoy, came to us without asking
We didn't have to beg for them, most of most of the blessings that you have came to you without you necessarily asking God the Almighty knew what you needed, he gave it to you.
And most of the blessings that we're enjoying, we're not getting charged for them.
Right? All we have to do is just express our gratitude to God. So we have to respect a lot.
And but how do how does that respect manifests itself? It manifests itself in one, respecting his words,
respecting his worth,
the Book of Allah, the Quran, the message that he sent for our own good,
showing respect to that, number two, respecting those who carry his word,
starting from the messengers, and those who follow their path.
So showing respect to the Prophet of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and all of his brothers of the prophets that came before him.
Because they were the ones that carry the message of Allah subhanaw taala to us, and they were equipped and prepared to handle this mission. So respecting them in general, and particularly to respect their guidance and their teachings. And what they taught us.
Allah Subhana tada tells us that one of the rights of the prophets peace and blessings be upon him as little as zero what what
it is for you to support him. And those of us who say, Well, he's no longer around, how can I support him? I mean, you can still support the Prophet of Allah by supporting his tradition. But Allah says, what was your role, and to respect him?
And the companions of the Prophet peace be upon him, and may God be pleased with them,
showed us
in their own ways, how to respect the Prophet peace be upon him. So when they were, they would listen to the Prophet peace be upon him.
They would listen to the Prophet
carefully and attentively to they were quick to respond to the Prophet peace be upon him.
Right?
They,
they were not. I mean, there's that famous story of a companion that was outside and he heard the Messenger of God saying to people in his congregation to sit down and he sat down, he's outside. So he said, Oh, you who believe Sit down.
So when the Prophet came outside, he found him sitting in the street of the loving Oh, he said, What are you doing here? He said, message of God, I heard you say to the believers to sit down, so I sat down.
Right.
gibreel came to the Prophet, who happen to be praying in his slippers.
And he told him something that so the Prophet took off his slippers, in the Salah, without interrupting his prayer, he took them up, and just pushed him aside. Everybody behind him did the same thing.
After the prayer, the Prophet asked, he said, Why did he do that? He said, we saw you to do it. So we did it.
Why not do that.
And there are many countless number of examples of how the competitors were quick to, to follow the Prophet peace be upon him and respond to the Prophet sallallahu cylance instruction, right. So this is all from respecting a loss of habitat. Part of also showing respect to Allah azzawajal is to show respect to those who carry his words from the scholars, starting from the companions of the Prophet peace be upon him, to those who came after them and those who came after them and onward. The prophet in his own words said that as part of showing respect to Allah azza wa jal to respect to show respect to those who carry the book of Allah the core and people that we refer to as far
as you respect this person, out of respect for Allah Subhana, WA Tada.
And, of course, the process of the mentioned some, another category that I'm going to come to you so showing respect to those who carry the Word of God, prophets, messengers, companions of the Prophet peace be upon him, scholars throughout history,
and not holding any ill feeling or grudges in our hearts against them. And even
and to pardon them, and to forgive them. Alice talks about those who come later says well Edina, whom embody him, those who come after them after the companions of the Prophet and those who come after them. Those who come after them. The latter part of this of these generations. Jaco Luna they say,
well, arena jahmene coonara fildena they say oh, Lord, oh, Lord, forgive us our sins. When he when in and Medina said acuna will amen
And forgive the sins of those of our brothers who came before us. Forgive them since we know they're not perfect.
So forgive their sins. We appreciate their contributions. If it wasn't for them, perhaps God knows where we would have been.
So they hold nothing but admiration, love, respect and forgiveness for them.
What do you
mean, amen. Well, kulu Vina larina Ave Allah Do not leave in our hearts any hatred for the believers. Well sh alpha luminary Lena and Rob banner in Nicaragua. Hi. So this is the attitude of the believers, they show respect to the contributions and to the accomplishments and to the merits of those who came before them.
Then the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam teaches us to show respect. So we talked about a law, those who carry the Word of God,
and those who share faith in God with us.
Those who share faith in God with us.
We are told
not to mock one another.
Oh, you who believe, do not mock or do not make fun of one another.
For the ones that you're making fun of or put down maybe better than him.
It's it's important for us brothers and sisters to remember that
that the way we treat people, the way we treat fellow Muslims, fellow human beings,
reflects how we feel about ourselves, as human beings and as Muslims.
So your perception, so if you have respect of your own faith of your own,
for lack of a better term, Islam, for instance, then you will respect every Muslim. If you have respect for your own humanity, then you will have respect for every human being.
If you have respect for your own life, then you will going to show respect for every living organism.
If you if you have respect of for your property, then you're going to show respect for every property.
So so we find that I'm just giving you examples. I'm not telling you something that you don't already know, I'm just reminding us of exempt connecting these things together. And it's all about respect.
Then we are called in the poor and the poor and calls upon us to show respect for specific categories.
To go above and beyond
our parents lacava bukanlah tabuteau illa Yahoo bill, Jamia Santa,
respecting the parents,
it is part of respecting Allah subhanho wa Taala. And again, the reason I'm saying this is we live in a time where it's very hard, it's very, it's even hard for parents to talk to their children about respecting them. It has become a challenge.
Parents have to find somebody else to talk to their children about respecting their.
And I tell you, one of the most effective ways of doing this is for you, yourself to become a role model.
When your children see how you respect your parents, and even if they're not around, when you speak highly of your parents, even those who passed away.
And if they live overseas, or they live abroad, or they live, their out of state,
your way of communicating with them,
how you talk about them, how you relate to them. So if you set an example for your children, also the way you treat your spouse, sisters, the way you treat your husband's brothers, the way you treat your wives,
the parent of your child, especially in front of your children, is going to set an example.
So don't expect someone to show respect to someone that you're not showing respect to.
So, nonetheless, we need to know all of us. If there's one thing that we all have in common, be young or older, male or female, we all have parents and the Quran teaches us and Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him taught us that you must show respect to your parents regardless.
You may not approve of everything that they do, you may not approve of their choices or their lifestyle or
or how they how they treat you
Or how they treat one another. Nonetheless, the very fact that God the Almighty chose this couple to be the direct cause of your existence
obligates you to show respect to them and appreciate that.
It is also mentioned in the words of Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him that we must show respect to our elders.
And the Hadees that I told you the Prophet said is part of Islam in Islam Allah tala.
Right. Part of showing respect to God is respecting those who carry his words and memorize the Quran, as well as showing respect to those to the elders within the community. Those whose the prophets refer to them as those whose hair turned gray. Mr.
So now you're supposed to not only respect your own parents, your own elders, but you're supposed to respect
everyone.
Everyone.
May Allah so just make you an eye of those who listen and follow the best of what they listen to a caller Hello, caller subtotal. Laurie, welcome, first of
Hungary loco Salatu, Salam ala evangelia, Deena sofa.
And this simple message of mine today, all I wanted to highlight is the importance of respect, respecting others respecting one's self, we're going to continue to talk about this. But I think it's all starts right there. When we understand the importance of this, once again, respect showing respect to others, be it in person, or online,
or
over the phone or in your
text messages, showing respect to people, right, is a reflection of your own self respect of how much you respect yourself.
Let me just say that one more time,
how you perceive yourself and how your level of self respect shows in your treatment, and the way you respect other people.
Everyone deserves to be respected. And the Prophet peace be upon him respected everyone, even those who oppose him, even those who abused him, and even those who rejected him. And he was most respectful and the Protestants have showed most kind kindness to those who were the closest to him. Those that we usually take for granted, the prophet said beware of abusing or taking for granted, let alone abusing.
You need to be aware of
not showing appreciation for those who are the closest to you.
And we have so many blessings, whether it's our children or our parents or our siblings or our spouses, we're blessed with all these great relationships.
And and most of us don't appreciate what we have until we lose it. So let that not be the case. May Allah have mercy upon those who passed away during this week of our brothers and sisters
locally and overseas, May Allah forgive their sins And grant them mercy. Tonight, inshallah tada we have Dr. Ahmed Bayonne
