Developing Taqwa

Yes, brothers and sisters, salam alaikum Welcome to another episode of

knowing yourself today we're going to be talking about God consciousness very appropriate because very soon Ramadan is going to be upon us. It's going to be a month of Ramadan. And yeah,

Allah subhanaw taala says in the Quran

really honestly, it is probably one of the most important characteristics that we need to develop within ourselves.

And Allah subhanaw taala has mentioned this term Taqwa many, many times in the Quran, right? So we're going to look and examine what is it? And then we're going to talk about a little bit. How can we develop it? How can we grow it? Obviously, you can, you know, fasting Ramadan is one of the ways that you can do it. Right. But I think when we understand a little bit more deeply what is taqwa right? In sha Allah, but I just want to mention, right? You know, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam before he,

you know, for used to give sermons, or part of his sermon was, you know, there's called the hospital hijau the, the, you know, the sermon of need or the sermon of necessity, right. Be mindful, we'll describe what taco is. But Allah says, you know, be mindful of your rub your provider, the one who nourishes you and sustains you and provides from you. For you. This is Allah, the Lord of the heavens in the earth, every single creature, every human being, Allah is there Rob, whether they recognize it or not, whether they accept it or not, whether they believe it or not, it is the fact it is the truth. And Allah subhana wa taala. Right. He says, He tells you, every one whether you are Muslim, or not a Muslim, to have Taqwa to develop this characteristic.

Right? Who created you because you created us what from a single soul will come from one one

When one soul, one human being, well to Adam and Eve, we all come from Adam and Eve we all come from this one soul that Allah subhanaw taala created and from that he created even from that he created countless men and women, as Allah says, right?

Countless men and women, many, many, not countless, but SubhanAllah. Many men and women, right. And again, Allah says, have Taqwa of Allah to whom you demand your mutual rights.

And verily, certainly Allah is the One who is watching over you. He sees what you do, he hears what you say, He knows every secret, that deeper secret of your deepest heart, Allah, your God, your Creator, He knows it.

Right? And it is through God that we demand our mutual rights, whether we recognize it or not, because that's the basis really of all human morality. Ultimately, our deep sense of need for justice, all comes back to our natural innate disposition, upon which God has created us. You see, so Allah is telling everybody to develop God consciousness, everyone should be mindful of God.

So it's not something that Allah just, you know, obligated upon the believers or encouraged those people who believe he encouraged it for everybody.

And it is therefore it's a characteristic that everyone should try to develop a consciousness of God because I think, I think God consciousness is possibly the best way to explain what it means this is to be honest, this is one of the amazing characteristics of the Arabic language and you can see why God chose Allah chose God chose to reveal the Quran in Arabic because it has certain qualities that you don't find in any other language. It has a type of both at the same time, it has a precision, but it has, importantly, a richness, a depth of meaning.

Right, that's, that's the key. The key is the depth of meaning.

So Taqwa is one of those words that you can't really translate it into English, like you literally, we have to give a talk to understand what is taqwa.

Whereas, in Arabic, it's summed up really, in one word, I suppose, you know, maybe we could invent a word but, you know, this is the thing, right? That this is the beauty of Arabic, right? So let's talk about what is taqwa this, this characteristic that Allah enjoins

and align Allah subhanaw taala encourages everybody, believer, non believer, people of demand people have not imagined when we say non believer meaning people who don't follow Islam, every all mankind or humanity are encouraged to have this quality and develop this this quality of what I think is best translated as God consciousness, right. So what is taqwa? So, let us describe this characteristic in a little bit more detail. Okay? Because it's not just, I suppose, is not just being conscious of God. It's being conscious of God in a specific sense in a specific way. And so fundamentally, taqwa is a type of consciousness of God, that would lead you to avoid doing the

things and behaving in ways that will distance you, from him and from his mercy and from his forgiveness.

And from his specific special love and mercy, right. So whatever distances you from Allah, whatever removes you from Allah, this is what we call sins, acts of disobedience acts of rebellion, whether they are spiritual or physical, or mental. But this is what creates that distance between us and our Creator. Our refusal to acknowledge in reality and to accept into our life, the reality of his wisdom

of his knowledge.

You see, So brothers and sisters, this is very important, because

you do hear some people say, Oh, yes, I'm a Muslim.

But

I and this is where the buck comes in. I'm you know, I am a Somali first I'm an app. I've actually heard this recently. I'm a Somali first, I'm an Afghan first. I am Pakistani first.

I am British first.

I'm America, I'm whatever. First. That's you see, really, you know, in a very simple way to make it very simple. That's just not possible to you can't really believe in God and say that at the same time, you just can't. Yeah, if you say that, you just not understanding what God is, what does it mean? What does it mean, tell me

that you are something first, before you are going to surrender yourself to God, because what that really says is that whatever my culture determines whatever my

I guessing its culture, right? Some things attached to your culture, because most of these places are just lines drawn on a map by white men.

Right?

I mean, that's the first thing. Some of it's ridiculous, right? You know, like, 500 years ago, there was no such place, as you know, with the boundaries, that is that is called Afghanistan, or Somalia or Pakistan, Pakistan, wasn't there, what, 5060 years ago, it didn't exist.

It's a lines drawn on a map by a white man, or some white men.

How do you get all excited about that, brothers and sisters.

And not only that, you only get excited about it, you say that this, this geographically defined thing that some lines drawn on a map by a white man is more important to you, and what that country stands for, and the culture that you attach to it is more important to you than what the Creator of the heavens and the earth says.

Really,

I mean, this is shocking, to the extreme. It's, it's unbelievable that a person of any level of intelligence could say such a thing, I don't believe an intelligent human being, right?

A person with any depth of intelligence and understanding, could say, such a thing is just pure emotion, and stupidity.

Right.

And I'm not saying here, you can't, you know, feel an attachment to the land in which you were born and you know, the language you speak and you know, the type of food you eat, because that's basically really what it comes down to. It's nothing else other than that, ultimately, really,

I mean, at the end of the day, we're human beings.

You know, we need to eat food, and then we need to discard that food. And it doesn't matter who you are, it comes out smelling bad.

Right? You every one of us came from a little sperm drop,

and an egg. And apparently, the first part of our body to start forming was actually our backside. As all of you came from, we all came from a backside. Literally, apparently.

And so what is that, like? And that's it. We all you know, we're all born we're all die. We're all gonna die really soon, like really, really soon?

Very quickly.

Like most trees live, like 10 times longer than us.

We're just here for a short, little moment. What is there to get so uppity about and so excited about? Our language and our culture and our food and our whatever? I seriously? What is really the difference between all of us? Like nothing? Honestly, nothing.

Right?

You see, So brothers and sisters, it's madness. This nationalism is madness. It's insanity. It makes no logical, rational sense at all. It makes no spiritual sense.

I mean, apart from like you said, obviously human beings sort of like things that we're familiar with. I can understand that. Right.

So Taqwa

what is Taco what is being conscious being aware of having an awareness of who in reality and what in reality, you're created as your LORD your provider? Right? How can you love something more than the one that provided that thing for you?

I mean, surely

I, like especially that thing has no power of its own.

It has no intrinsic power, it has no intrinsic ability. If it's given you anything, if the land in which you love so much or you are born or your parents were born, because many of these people not even born in those lands, maybe some of them haven't even been to it. Right?

That land didn't give it give you anything in and of itself. It only was able

to bear you, because God your Creator, Allah allowed it. So What madness is it? Therefore,

to think that anything is more deserving of your love and your affection and your fear and your hope and your trust and your complete devotion other than God, truly if you think otherwise you are truly lost. You are truly lost.

So Taqwa this is all we're talking about God consciousness

is going to start from knowing about God, knowing who is God, what is God, understanding how great Allahu Akbar La hawla wala Quwata illa Billah, Allah is the Greatest Allah is greater literally, Allahu Akbar means Allah is greater. Whatever you can think of, however powerful, and great and mighty, something you think of anything that is powerful and great and mighty. Allah is greater than that. Allah is greater.

Allah is even greater than even whatever greatness you can imagine, for Allah, Allah is still greater than that. Because you still really can't fully comprehend how, however great Allah is, you can imagine in your mind, how great Allah is, Allah is actually greater than that. Because you cannot truly grasp the greatness of Allah.

You can't.

But you can begin, you can begin to try.

You can begin to you know, have some awareness of that.

And this is what Allah is telling us have this Taqwa.

So taco is not just, you know, knowing that God exists, it's way more than that. It's not just knowing that there is a Creator.

There's not it's not just knowing that there is a being who has created us, nor does it mean just knowing that there is a being who has created us and has, you know, given us a religion, and what does it mean then? If you don't understand that religion, if you don't abide by its precepts, precepts, what does it mean? What does it say about you?

What does it say about your understanding or lack of understanding about God?

When Omar ibn Al Khattab he was asked, what is Taco? He said, Have you ever

walked along a path that is overgrown with thorns? Now where I live, there's lots of parts like that, especially in summer.

In fact, often I go out mountain biking, and I come back with my skin ripped up

from scratches from the thorns

over the parts.

So Omar is saying, Look, when you walk across a path or you go down a path that's covered in thorns, how do you progress down that path? How do you move? How do you behave? And the person says, Well, I'm very careful

and careful, because I don't want the thorns to rip my clothes and rip my skin.

And almost said, This is what tacos like.

It means that you go down and proceed through life, being very diligent and being very careful to protect yourself against the things that will harm you and harm your relationship with Allah Subhanallah time.

So the word taqwa in Arabic itself has its roots in the Arabic word for shields. So the shield is something that protects you from harm.

So you shield yourself from something that is going to harm me, and what is going to harm you ultimately, ultimately, most importantly, what is going to harm you is the acts of disobedience to your Lord and your Creator.

This is how you oppress yourself. This is because God by the way, Allah does not need you to worship him. He doesn't need you to

Worship Me has no need of it doesn't need you to follow Islam, he doesn't need you to be a Muslim. He doesn't need it

isn't he's he's free from all wants and needs. He's only given us this guidance,

from His mercy,

from his perfect knowledge and his perfect wisdom. And he has given this guidance from himself

out of kindness to us, because He knows what is best for us. He knows what it's truly damaging to us. Because the reality is, we may love something that is bad for us, and we may hate something that is good for us.

And what is the human being our tendency is just going to be to follow our desires, we're just going to follow our desires, our passions, our inclinations, our biases, right? Even when we try really hard to figure it out, the human condition is so complex, half the time we get it wrong anyway. Because because that's our condition, our condition is a condition of ignorance, whereas Allah's condition is the one who knows everything, every secret, every intimate detail, every minutiae of the quantum realm,

the movement of every sub atomic particle, and what is greater than that, and less than that, not a leaf falls, but he knows it.

Nothing that moves in the heavens or the earth,

that comes in or out of existence, except Allah knows it.

And he created it.

And nothing can happen unless you allows it to happen.

So I hope, therefore, that if you contemplate upon this deeply and you reflect upon this matter,

then you will understand very quickly, how foolish and misguided

and how ignorant is the condition of the person who abandons this guidance.

In favor of what in favor of their ignorance in favor of their whims and their desires, their passions.

That's what they abandon the guidance of Allah awful, because of their love, and their attachment to this world, and the things of this world, and this world is a test. That's what it is, it's a testing ground to see, are you going to do righteous deeds? Are you going to do what is right? Are you going to do what is going to truly, ultimately benefit you? And the ultimate benefit is in the actor? Yes, there may be something they need in order to gain

the next life, you will have to sacrifice in this life. Yes, that is the reality of this world. The reality of this world is in order to get to Jannah, in order to go to the garden, in order to go to paradise in order to live in eternal bliss in the next life. You have to you will have to sacrifice your ego, you will have to sacrifice, your passions, your desires, you will have to sacrifice some things from this worldly life. That's the reality.

But the the thing is that even in that is the path of true happiness like it Yes, it seems to be sacrifice, but in reality, even then, once you are upon it, you realize this is the path of bliss. This is the path of happiness. This is the path of joy. This is the path of success. You see.

So Taqwa

so how do you get it then? How do you get it? Well, the first thing you're going to need is knowledge. You see, it's very important knowledge, my dear brothers and sisters is key. Because without knowledge, how are you going to know? What is Allah's guidance? How will you going to know right from wrong? How are you going to know good from evil? How are you going to know the truly lofty, lofty and noble and beneficial characteristics that you should acquire?

And how will you know which characteristics to avoid? How will you know how to train yourself spiritually,

mentally,

in the most positive and constructive way, you will never really no, even if you earnestly set yourself upon that road, that I'm going to master my ego. I'm going to master myself I'm going to develop my

Soul my spirit.

Unfortunately, without guidance from the One who created your soul and created your spirit Spirit, you are, it's almost like you're groping in the dark, you all honestly, you have very little to go on

maybe some aspects of intuition. That's all you have really, maybe some intuition, maybe some a few things you might be able to figure out through reasoning.

Some a few things you may be able to, you know, understand through some experiences, but it's like, it's almost like, you're in a thunderstorm, you're in a, you know, you're in the middle you're in, imagine you're in this dark place, you're in the mountains. And there's a thunderstorm. So it's dark, it's dark, because of the mountains is dark, because it's night, and it's extra dark because of the thick clouds. So you can barely see, you know, this is what it's like, you kind of you stretch out your hand, you can barely see your hand.

And you're in the mountains, there could be a cliff, there could be a ravine, there could be any type of danger, you can't see you're just fumbling along trying to find your way. And then the lightning comes flashes, right. And for a brief moment, you can see everything. But it's so bright, that it almost blinds you. So on one hand, you get a glimpse, but on the other hand, the brightness of the lightning almost takes away your sight. And then because of it, although you've got a glimpse, you're almost more confused.

At the same time. That's what it's like trying to find your way. I mean, this is just for people who are trying to find their way. They're really trying to actually find their way. Whereas most people don't even do that. They'll just sit and not even try and find their way. They'll just sit where they are and just die like that. But I'm talking about people who are trying to traverse the path. They're trying to find their way through the mountain.

You know, hoping to reach the promised land.

You see. So the one who has Taqwa. That's the first thing they equip themselves is knowledge. Right? Because knowledge defines the path. Knowledge is like a lanten Knowledge is like a torch. Knowledge is like a shining light. That shows you the way

it shows you the path. Right? So you got to understand where is the path? What is it? Where is it leading to? Where's what's it going through. So this is taqwa, it shows you it gives you that direction, that knowledge gives you the direction, right? Because how can you be mindful of God? How can you protect yourself from the things that is going to distance you from God if you don't know what they are?

Or if your notion of it is extremely vague.

Right? Do you understand where I'm coming from? So, taqwa in order to really have taqwa, my dear brothers and sisters, may Allah bless you may Allah increase all of us in Taqwa. In order to have it. You need knowledge. And this is why Allah mentioned in the Quran that it is only the Allama who truly have Taqwa.

You see, it is only the dilemma who truly have Taqwa. Do you understand that? The importance of knowledge, the importance of seeking knowledge, the importance of this is why we have the Quran

It's gonna start with this taco.

It's got to be it's one of the most essential characteristics that you need to develop. So with a it's not you're not studying the Quran and studying the religion or studying fic you know, just, you know, to for whatever, I don't know why you're studying it, just to maybe inquire some encyclopedic knowledge, right. Like Allah talked about some people they're like donkeys with books on their backs. They carry the knowledge like a donkey, you could get a donkey and put

Books in its back. Does that mean the donkey is knowledgeable? Does that mean the donkey is a knowledgeable? No, it's just got a bunch of books that's weighing it down and making its life odd. Because the donkey doesn't act on the knowledge. It doesn't benefit from the knowledge. It's carrying it. This is like people today, they carry the Quran, they've memorized the entire Quran, they don't understand a word of it.

Subhanallah

I mean, I don't I'm not saying that learning the Quran and reciting it is a blessing, no doubt, it has a benefit. Even if you don't understand it. It has a type of spiritual benefits like a type of Shiva. Maybe it has, because it's the words of Allah. But ultimately, really, are you benefiting it benefiting it from if you don't understand it? No, because the Quran will either be a witness for you or against you on the Day of Judgment. It's a witness for you, if you act on it, you have to act on it. You have to implement it. May Allah help us to do that. May Allah help us and protect us from misguidance.

So you're studying the Quran and reading the Quran with the viewpoint of Oh Allah, guide me in my life. Give me the header give me the guidance. Because I want to be of the people who have Taqwa, who participate this guidance is there so you can know what are the things that I need to keep away from? What are the bad things that I need to distance myself from? I need to protect myself because this is what is going to lead me to hellfire. This is what is going to distance me from my Creator. What is worse than being distant from

Allah, from God from your Creator? What is worse than that nothing is the most terrible state to be in. It's the state of death. You're alive physically, but you're dead spiritually.

Now what gives life to the heart is the remembrance of God.

You see, So brothers and sisters.

Step one to acquire Taqwa is to approach the Quran to, to approach seeking knowledge, with the viewpoint of not being a scholar, of not being learned, just for the sake of it. Know, it's there for you to implement. It's there for you to draw close to God. It's not there for you so you can acquire all these arguments so you can win debates, and that people will sit around you because you're so knowledgeable. These things Subhanallah The Prophet said, if a person seeks knowledge for these reasons, then the fire the fire, the fire the fire.

May Allah protect us, may Allah protect us from Jahannam May Allah protect us from that.

so that you may and that's why we worship as well. Because worship is the practical manifestation of that when we're fasting Ramadan is very powerful. Because the other important element is the site the psychological element. can have this self control. You can have self discipline. That's what it's all about brothers and sisters, right? Through knowing yourself then you learn how to master

yourself. That's the practical inflamation implementation. And in order to do that we need a system. That's what Islam gives us. You need to pray five times a day you have to, you must, Allah didn't exempt any human being from this, except under certain extreme circumstances.

You see, Allah did not exempt anyone, no one is not. No one is without need of this, everyone is indeed

fasting. The month of Ramadan, Allah God has obligated this upon everybody, every human being, except for some,

you know, mitigating circumstances.

You see, giving Zakah a certain defined minimum amount of yourself this is the minimum that a person needs to do in order to discipline themselves. It is the structure that we human beings need, and no one is exempt from it. No one.

In Medina in the law, Hill, Islam, the way of life with God,

is the way of life of surrendering to God of submission to God,

a following the uncanny how, just logically, do you think you can come up with a better program for your spiritual development than the one God has given you?

I don't know how you could think that. Maybe I'm missing something. Maybe I'm the one who's stupid, possibly.

That if someone can explain to me how you think that you can come up with a better program

of spiritual development, a better discipline for spiritual development than the one that the Creator of the heavens in the earth who knows every single detail of everything, who knows you better than you know yourself who is closer to you than your jugular vein? If you can tell me how, and explain to me how you can come up with a better program of mental and spiritual self development, and a better system of self mastery. Let me know.

Explain to me the logic behind it.

Well, I don't, you know, until someone does that, which I don't think is ever going to happen. But it's possible. But you know, I don't think it is, you know, I'd be interested to hear it.

But right now, what I'm absolutely 100% convinced about and I'm pretty sure I'll be I'll die being convinced about that is that this is what Allah has given us. This is what God this is why He sent Muhammad. This is why He sent the last and final messenger to him and to be the seal of the prophets, the final messenger to teach us and to show us through his living example. Through his living example through his sunnah.

Right? How to live a life of Taqwa. And this is very important. I'm going to finish on this brothers and sisters, very important.

Do you really think that you can come up with a better way?

And I'm even asking this to Muslims, because there are many, many Muslims who have introduced and innovated and bought things into this religion, that were not practiced by the Prophet Muhammad, or his companions, or the early generations of the Muslims, claiming that it is piety, claiming that it is righteousness, claiming that this is a path towards

God consciousness.

And that baffles me as well. Because I don't see really the difference between people who do that and people who just do it generally.

I mean, because surely the surely it just comes down to the same thing. Surely, you're just saying that? Yeah, well, okay. I'm within that discipline. But I can think of a few things that, you know, the Prophet Muhammad didn't tell us like that. How do you know? That's what confuses me. If, if, if the messenger of God

or at least his companions, we can understand maybe they had a consensus about something, right? Fine. My alma will never unite upon misguidance.

So

if it's outside of that, how, how do you argue that this is part of the religion? How do you argue that this is a way of developing yourself spiritually?

Don't we have enough to go on from the sun? Have we applied every sun? Have we have we reached how are we so sure that we're sincere and everything we do? I mean, honestly, I just think if you just spent all of your time just trying to try to make sure that you are sincere, you probably wouldn't have much time for anything else. A lot of them but you know,

Maybe some people have reached some state and some level that you know, poor little me and you and we can't understand maybe, I guess you know we'll find out when we meet Allah Spano Tala, on the Day of Judgment. But as for me, brothers and sisters, I would much rather stick to the path that has been laid down to us by the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam and his companions and those early Muslims, who it seems to me understood,

this guidance, the best, and the Prophet. You see, when when there were three young men, I'm going to finish on this three young men.

They came to ask the family of the Prophet about the worship of Rasul Allah, His Ibadah

it's a good thing to leave it on this one.

And when they heard they said, Well, he's the messenger of God. You know, Allah has forgiven his past and future sins. Who are we? One of them said, Well, I'm going to fast everyday

Yeah,

I am going to fast every day. The other one said, I will never sleep at night.

And another one said, I will never get married.

What was their idea?

The prophet is so you know, ALLAH is forgiving his sins we need to you know, do even more. Right if we're gonna we've we got a chance.

But when the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam heard this, he was upset. He did not approve of this at all. In fact, he disapproved of it so much that he called the people this was the habit, you know, when the Prophet had an important so Allahu alayhi wa sallam, when he had an important announcement to make, he would call the peoples equal to people and they came to the masjid.

He said, Who is such and such? So he didn't name them directly, but he said, Who is the who the people who say this and say that would have been he is mentioning these things. He said by Allah.

He said, I, I fear Allah I have the most Taqwa of all of you. This is very important, you see, because no one had more Taqwa. And no one will ever have more Taqwa more God consciousness than also the loss of a loved one he was.

He said, Biola have the most Taqwa of all of you. And I fast some days, and I don't fast some days. And I sleep in the night and I pray in the night and I marry women.

The best you can ever do, my dear brothers and sisters, is by following the footsteps of Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam you don't need to increase upon it one little bit.

The best you could ever do is just rigorously follow his sunnah in sha Allah.
