Today marks the second day of the Islamic month of Muharram.

In our time and place here in Utica, in the United States, it's easy to let the days go by without noticing the changing of the Islamic months. Ramadan is probably the time of year where we become most aware of the moon and its phases. But then after Eid, we lose track again until the beginning of the hedger and the time before the next day.

This makes sense. We live in a society that marks time differently. All our deadlines and appointments. Our bills and our pay days are all on a different calendar.

That calendar, the solar calendar, lets us predict what's going to come next. it orients us

and while there's nothing wrong with ordering our worldly life, according to the conventional solar calendar, we have to realize that by losing track of the Islamic calendar, we're missing out on our spiritual orientation.

Without knowing the Islamic dates, it becomes more difficult to know when the recommended fasting days are coming.

Islamic history can't be remembered or celebrated because the days passed by unnoticed. Allah subhana wa Tada ordained the Islamic calendar for our spiritual orientation.

If we can manage to order our spiritual lives, according to that calendar, we will feel closer to Allah.
