Welcome to our 3rd Swiss Open House everybody.
We're certainly happy to have all of you
here. And there's really 3 or 4 purposes
for this open house. Number 1 is to
introduce ourselves to you, of course. Number 2
is to talk and walk you through how
to use the SWISS system.
Number 3 is to introduce our course offerings
for this semester. And number 4
is to introduce some of our new instructors
that are gonna be jumping on board. And
the number 5 is to take any questions
that you may have. This is actually being
recorded and will be posted
in the student dashboard. So if anyone needs
to look at it again, it'll be there
for you Insha Allah. As we get started
now,
I think it's first important that we talk
about the mission and story of SWISS.
SWISS started probably in 19 nineties when I
used to drive,
45 minutes every day back and forth to
memorize the Quran.
And, I was in college and I was
actually working, and I was a new convert.
And this is actually I memorized the Quran,
here. And every day, I would drive to
a city 45 minutes and back. I spent
a lot of gas money, and there was
no electric car, so so don't how hit
on me back then. And there's no BART,
or Subway in Oklahoma.
But just remembering how difficult that was, like,
how hard that was
to be able to find someone that could
teach me. And then when I came back
from studying overseas after, 10 years in Abu
Dressed and 7 years in Egypt,
Doing it to gain education
was was concerned about 3 or 4 things.
Number 1 was the affordability of education.
Number 2 is the accessibility of education. Number
3 was, like, I,
in my early days as a student, I
only heard about Quran and the prophet
to the point that if you ask me
what Islam was, I would have said Islam
is Sayyidina Nabi.
Like, the only thing I knew was the
prophet. I didn't know about groups. I didn't
know about this group or that group or
or all of the divisions that we found
in the community till I moved to Detroit,
and even moving to the Bay Area. And
I would tell people, like, I'm just Muslim.
They're like, no. No. But what kind of
Muslim are you? I had no idea,
what they were talking about. So coming back,
the third concern was that the Muslim community
is so divided and not centered,
on the Quran and on love of Sayid
Muhammad sallallahu alaihi wa sallam,
and Salihin and our ancestors.
The 4th is, as I mentioned, is accessibility
that people have access to learning. So the
first, as I mentioned, was affordability.
Right? I I found myself priced out many
times as a convert.
The second was, as I mentioned, the lack
of trying to
teach people a certain philosophy, but to tie
them to the religion and to the beauty
of Islam.
The 3rd, excuse me, is accessibility.
The people should have access. And then the
4th is affordability. And, again, we've said this
more than once. If anyone is having trouble
paying their subscription during the COVID crisis, like,
don't worry about it. Just let us know.
We'll cancel your fees
until you're able to get established on yourself,
yourself as established. And the 5th thing is
that we felt I felt that Islam needed
to be contextually appropriate, that it needs to
speak to the
situations
of specifically,
broader American Muslims. So that's really how Swiss
started.
Driving back and forth 45 minutes,
coming out of Oklahoma, which is like the
countryside, you know, just thinking I'm Muslim,
and running into a set of problems that
I still feel today we struggle to answer
at a grassroots level.
The purpose of SWISS is to create functional
religious literacy, not dysfunctional scholarship. Nobody is going
to become a scholar studying at SWISS.
We we want to emphasize that it's about
functional,
literacy. So now as we segue into our
next important,
kinda set of information, we're gonna move over
to brother Ahmed Khatib who's going to walk
you through how to use and operate the
SWIS system.

Excellent. So what we're gonna do now that
is move in to talk about this semester's,
offerings.
So we have this semester quite a few
things that are gonna happen. That's what happened.
Ahmed, maybe if you can kinda step out
for a second until you get things together
because I think it's messing up, the screens
in general.
But what I'm gonna do is turn it
over now to Abdul Karim Sayed who
is doing some incredible courses with young, Muslims
across the globe
and some very creative. Like, I would say,
his library
is very impressive as well.
Very creative work that he's doing. So Abdul
Kareem, I'm gonna turn it over to you.

Be the name of God, the compassionate, the
caring, and all praise belong to him. And
we pray to him to send his choices,
peace, and blessings upon his beloved messenger, Muhammad
I praise God for having the opportunity to
even be here with you.
I think one of the things that we
recognize is that every single second and moment
is
a gift from Allah to us, of our
existence, and,
we are here. And it's kind of that
gift is I think one of the highlights,
like like, Sheikh Suje was mentioning was,
the purpose of SWISS is not to become
a scholar. The purpose of SWISS is to
experience this deep
in its reality and its totality.
And have it something that is relevant and
that's organic. And that's what this faith is
actually is.
Islam isn't an academic just, you know, strictly
endeavor. It's about us experiencing our creator. And
that's kind of what I'm so excited about
being here is that even in the classes
that I've attended, I myself attend, you know,
Sheikh Soheb's classes. And what I appreciate the
most about is that it's it's so organic
and so real, and I think it's something
that we're truly missing. And that's what I
try to kinda translate and bring into,
some of the programs we're doing for middle
schoolers, for this semester. So the 2 of
the programs that I'm really excited about,
are first, we have on Thursdays,
3:30 PM Pacific,
or and 5:30 PM,
Eastern Standard Time is a course called listening
to God. And it actually builds upon,
kind of what the classes we were offering
before, which were faith essentials for middle schoolers
and,
the lives of the prophets. And what we're
doing and listening with God is what we
recognize is that, especially in today's day and
age, given the amount of just media and
information that keeps just being thrown at us,
especially for our children and the amount of
time they're spending in front of, you know,
the computer and just consuming
media is that we've lost the art of
listening. And I think even for us adults,
what we can see is that we've lost
what we can see is that we've lost
the ability to even listen and hear. And
if we can't listen to God, then how
are we supposed to hear what God is
telling us, and how are we supposed to
be able to communicate how are we supposed
to hear what God is telling us, and
how are we supposed to be able to
communicate and actually interact with Allah? So I
think that's,
what we try to do in this course
is work with our young people to be
able to kind of see what that means.
What what does it mean to listen? And
then I we keep it really interactive where,
like every class, it's kind of an open
discussion. And then we come up with little
activities to kinda exemplify how,
if we don't actually truly try to listen,
that we can't really hear anything. And one
of the things we're gonna be doing in
my next class is that you know, one
of the things I the way I begin
is that,
I start talking, but then I have, like,
different, like, either,
music or some video playing in the background
really loud. And what you'll find is that
you can't hear what I'm saying to me.
I mean, what I'm saying to you because
there's so many other things that are going
on. And by training our young people to
recognize that, look, you have to distinguish what
is coming into you. Right? Identify what is
the information or what you're consuming, and then
recognize what is beneficial, what is not. And
that in order to be able to do
that, you first have to be able to
block out that noise and just truly listen.
So I'm really excited about that, and,
inshallah, look forward to having you guys join.
And if definitely, if you ever have any
questions or anything, definitely shoot them our way,
and we can kind of, let you know,
kind of if you want more details on
what, the curriculum is and how we're gonna
proceed.
Definitely hit us up. And then the other
class that we have coming this semester is,
the reflection circle we're continuing.
We started,
in the fall, and we're continuing the series.
And, again, this is a type of series
that you don't have there's no prerequisites required
for it. So even if you, you know,
haven't been in the first we've done 13
episodes so far. So if you're just joining
us now midstream of the avatar, you can
definitely join.
And it's not gonna impact you too much.
We do have some things we've built upon.
But, again, it's the whole focus of this
session, again, is
how we give the tools for our young
people to be or to organically
see the signs of God in everything they
do. And even in some of the entertainment
they consume, what they can see is that
you can derive benefit from it. So what
we end up doing is we spend about
20 minutes watching an episode,
of Avatar, and then we sit there and
we reflect on kind of what are some
of the lessons we can draw from it.
And what we see is that, especially in
Avatar, for example, one of the key themes
in that,
in the series is about being a refugee.
That you have these different tribes of people
and these and some of these tribes have
been oppressed, and they're refugees, and they're trying
to find their identity and trying to find
justice and fairness and equality in the in
the world and try to bring that to
the world. And one of the most amazing
things is that the the young people can,
you know, they automatically click and are able
to reflect and give some really deep meanings.
And what they're surprised of surprised about is
that, wait a minute. My faith actually applies
to this? And it's like, yes. In everything
that you do and everything you experience, your
faith has purpose and has meaning.
And, you know, some of the reflections that
some of the young people have come up
with have been like like, I haven't even
thought of those things. And what we find
is that if we actually allow and create
spaces for our young people to be present
and to feel confident in experiencing their faith,
that it's not just one way, you know,
that I'm just the one who's educating or
teaching,
that they have the capability. Right? Once they
have the tools to be able to kind
of decipher and see and just try to
come up with, you know, what their reflections
are, that they can actually that truly does
open their mind and their hearts to find
faith relevant and also come up with some
amazing things that, you know I I mean,
I I can't,
express enough about how many, like, deep lessons
that the young like, an 11 year old
will come up with that I didn't even
see when I was watching the episode.
So definitely excited about that. So definitely come
and join, if you're a middle schooler.
Actually, for the avatar, we have 2 sessions.
We have one for middle schoolers, which is,
for, like, you know,
for 15 and below. And then we we
also have a section for 16 plus. And
the 16 plus is also amazing. That's like,
you know, we've had, you know, 16 year
olds. We've had, you know, 40 plus year
olds join. And, again, that's been an amazing
discussion as well,
in terms of, again, reflecting on,
what not only is in in in in
the in the cartoon in terms of what
lessons we can derive from it, but a
lot of our discussion starts facing around, like,
what we're facing currently in today's day and
age. And that's been kind of a, you
know, another opportunity to have, like, some really
enriching discussions. And, again, be be in a
space where it's comfortable. I think one of
the things that I've always you know, whenever
I try to work with shifts who have
to come up with programming, you know, one
of the things we always talk about is,
you know, what would what would we have
like when we were growing up? And I
think one of the main things, again, the
theme of all the Swiss programming and all
the Swiss classes is that, again, of of
being comfortable in our skin, being places where
people can experience and and work with their
faith and not feel judged. And,
and, again, for that 16 plus avatar thing,
it's a perfect opportunity to do that too
as you come in and just come as
you are and enjoy just being with other
Muslims just discussing and, you know, enjoying a
cartoon but also discussing faith. So,
yeah, I appreciate,
you know, again, all the the support that
we've gotten so far for for these programs.
And, again, look forward to seeing you all

This page,

And if it's your first time at SWISS,
we have an orientation video which Imam Suhayb
has put has put together.
This first video kind of directs you on
to where to start your journey on the
SWISS platform.
The
platform has a couple types of videos.
1 is
on demand.
So, for example,
as, Imam Suhay, as you watch this first
video, you're watching an an on demand video,
and he guides you to a course which,
which we have, which is the essentials of
the Islamic faith to start your journey.
The other types of courses we have are
our live courses.
And we use Zoom for all of our
live courses,
and the course and the Zoom links are
built into this actual platform.
So for so for example, for the Kareem
Sayed, who just spoke earlier,
has his class listening to God for middle
schoolers.
He has a little introduction to his class,
and here's the actual Zoom link to join
the live session.
So all the links are on the platform.
You have to log in to access the
links.
Another question people have is, well, when are
the live classes? And that's a good question.
On our menu bar, we have a link

And if you click on the calendar of

is Life of the Prophets 2. We did
Life of the Prophets 1 for teens. We
have over 400 youth,
enrolled in those programs.

Meiraj Mohdine. He's actually co teaching this with
me. He will be showing up,
once a month because, of course, he's a
physician and he's extremely busy. But, again, if

also be putting up the syllabus, which is
done, so you can see how you want
to follow along with not only the lectures,
but also the sets of videos that doctor
Meralaj has prepared,
for young people as well as the links

Insha'Allah. The 3rd class that I'm teaching on
Sundays, which starts at 3 o'clock EST is
reading Arabic the easy way. This book actually
was written by my brother-in-law, which is kind
of cool.
And I've taught this book to a number
of people before, and this actually is a
course for people that have zero
experience or background in the Arabic language.
And if you look at it now, you're
gonna find the introductory video as well as
materials. You're going to find a link to
get the textbook.
You're going to find also 3rd, the live
information sessions. And then if you click on
the last one, you're going to find a
set of already recorded videos.
The first 11 are there. So not only
are we going to be meeting once a
week, but also you'll have a set of
videos that you can follow that are going
to explain the book.
So the book was written actually to help
you kind of guide yourself through it, but,
of course, you know, Arabic is best if
you have, like, a teacher. So these videos
that you're going to see here, and they'll
probably be,
in the next 2 semester 75 videos,
that are gonna walk you through it and
and really give you what you need to
start to be able to read the Quran,
and have that kind of relationship with the
book of Allah.
So these are the three
course offerings that I'll be sharing.
A few things that also I think is
very important is that we're going to be
starting study buddy circles.
So we have a few volunteers who have
really enjoyed the Swiss system.
And for example, Abdul Rahim is going to
be leading a study session on the foundations
of Arabic.
Sister Danielle is going to be leading a
a study session or, like, just more of
a social session
on
essentials of Islamic faith.
We have one of our youth who's going
to do so for young people. So look
for that to come also in the future
Insha Allah. Speaking of the future now, we
have a number of courses that are gonna
start,
in the middle of this term, and I'd
like you
give you, like, the first glimpse in the
Ahmed if you can make it actually big.

on the names of Allah. We'll be using
the book reflecting on the names of Allah
as the foundation for the course, but I
hope that we will be going beyond it.
Inshallah, we will be talking about,
Allah's names. We'll be going,
through, many of the names, although I don't
think we can go through all of them,
this semester.
However, the purpose of this course is for
you to be able to
understand the manifestations of Allah's names in your
life, for you to be able to connect
to Allah
for you to be able to read the
Quran and see how Allah
describes himself in the Quran,
and for you to be able to reflect
on these names yourself
and understand
how Allah manifests his beautiful names in your

him introduce himself himself and tell you what
courses,
he plans to offer, but we're super, super
excited to welcome you to Swissman
and are happy to have you jump in
real quick and introduce yourself and talk about
what we've been envisioning.

name is Kenny Solis.
It's an honor and blessing to be in
the presence of you all and be here
with you all.
I'm producing a couple different classes.
I'm gonna start with the foundation. 1st class
is introduction to
Hadith and then, Ulum Al Quran.
And I I I have a whole list
of,
curriculum that I'm gonna provide and bring to,
to SWIS that I'm excited to to bring
to you all. And it's an honor, and
it's a pleasure to be with you all
and be with this team and teach with
SWIS.
So I'm Duaa. A little bit about myself.
Finishing a master's program at Beyond School of
Theology
and,
and a and a certificate in chaplaincy.
And I serve the community,
with knowledge and service,
and I've been involved in several different organizations,
LINK Outside Prison Outreach, Inside Academy, ILC Dawah
Outreach, ILC
New Muslim Mentoring,
and I've also been teaching in Mexico
and also here in the States,
locally and abroad. So, alhamdulillah, I'm here. I'm
I'm here to I'm excited to be part
of,
Swiss and
and,
provide,
provide a lot. Thank you.
Yeah. We're super excited to have you. I
think one of the things also that
we plan to offer is actually a course
in Spanish.
I don't know if you wanna talk about
that, but we've noticed and that's goes back
to one of our core values at SWISS
as being kind of on the ground and
understanding the needs.
If you could talk about, like, this massive
influx of Spanish speaking Muslims and how shall
we hope to be able to serve them
as well as the communities in Mexico that
you and I have talked about in the
past. Mhmm. Mhmm.
So when I when I was
in Rosarito, Mexico
in
20
16,
I noticed that
there was no,
Islamic education,
and there was no foundation there.
And,
it's great. It's it's needed not only in
that community, but in the whole US and
everywhere.
So I'm hoping to provide,
different classes in Spanish.
I've done a couple of different workshops,
the day of the dead,
and I've done,
another workshop called can I be Latino and
Muslim? Exploring the culture imperative.
So I'm hoping to provide not only these
courses in English, but also in Spanish,
which there's none. There's none. And it's greatly
needed everywhere.
May Allah give us
So, that's that's another,
exciting announcement that we have. So doctor Jinayan
Youssef and then,
Sheikkhani
is going to be joining and then hoping
to expand,
our
our curriculum and what we teach to Spanish
speaking communities
across the globe, which are in America right
now. There's some studies show are the largest
number of people embracing Islam.
So we're happy to have you and,
super excited,
for what the future is going to bring.
As we as we prepare to to close
out now,
I think there's also another really important
announcement that we have, and that is that
we also have another teacher,
joining us
as as the support for SWISS has really
grown,
especially in the last 8 months.
We've been able to scale in a way
that allows us to reach out to other
teachers to come and join us.
Actually Kenny reached out to me, man, and
and I was able to look at the
work he was doing. I was just blown
away,
by it. But we have also a very
special teacher that's going to be start start
teaching a class
in March, and I would like to ask
Ahmed if he could show,
that video really quickly.
My name is Mary Mamir, and I'm incredibly
honored and excited to be teaching a course
insha'Allah with Swiss Institute on women and power
through knowing God. So many questions that I
receive have to do with the prophetic narrations
and the verses of the Quran that women
and men struggle with understanding as it relates
to what it means to be a woman.
What is the role of being a woman?
So many issues, like, is marital * real
in Islam? What about the curse of the
angels?
The ayam Darb, what does it mean to
strike in a relationship?
Why is it that in the Quran it
talks about the testimony of 2 women versus
1 man?
What about
the hadith on a woman's intellect being deficient?
What about
having women pray at home versus in the
masjid? What about women giving lectures in public?
What about women working versus being a mother
full time and having no other outside responsibilities?
These and so many more
We are going to cover in the lens
of what it looked like to be a
companion of the prophet Muhammad, peace be upon
him, who was a woman. What did the
woman in the time of the prophet Muhammad,
peace be upon him, do? How did they
understand these teachings?
How did they live as they battled with
him, peace be upon him? As they were
in part of the masjid space with him,
peace be upon him? As they were in
their own homes or in society?
How did the companions of the prophet, peace
be upon him, who were women,
understand
their relationship with God. It's an honor and
such an exciting
opportunity for me to inshallah learn from all
of you in our course discussions, and I'm
super grateful
for the chance inshallah
to teach with you. May Allah bless you

So, alhamdulillah, as you can see trying to
stay true to our core vision. We are
offering programs for
as much of the Muslim demographic as we're
able to. We're also bringing on some more
teachers as well for the summer. Shahassen Sadim
was unfortunately not able to be here. He's
an imam, and he is in an area
in Iowa that actually, unfortunately, many people don't
know it was hit with a hurricane
a few months ago. But his course on
the Shamayil,
that he's teaching, and he and I were
together in Al Azhar.
Is continuing, every Sunday night as well as
Sheikh Abdul Summit,
who I converted with
in Oklahoma,
was also unable to attend, but his shotokaf
continues also on on Tuesdays, and my live
talks here will start soon as well. So
trying to offer programs that cater to the
young,
cater to and we're actually going to talk
about in the future students of knowledge,
as well as parents,
as well as converts, as well as Latinos,
Spanish speaking brothers and sisters, as well as
issues related to women are really trying to
capture all of those from a grassroots
perspective.
Again, we look at ourselves as very organic.
This is only our beta launch. We're planning
to launch the app Insha'Allah by Ramadan.
But, let me give you also some numbers.
We have almost 60 people now currently memorizing
the Quran, alhamdulillah,
who are reading the Quran right now to
me, and we're bringing on a few other
as Harishicks,
from Egypt where they can read the entire
Quran to them after they finish the tashweed
series and pass,
with flying colors. We then start them in
reading of the Quran. There's one brother right
now reading with me. Subhanallah. This brother had
COVID 19 and he has not missed a
lesson in
So he's reading with me the Tarik of
Azraq and
and even he has to take a break
between,
words because of of the impact,
of COVID 19 on him. We have around
250
people on scholarship.
I would say probably 40% of those people
are new,
Muslims,
and others are Muslims even in other parts
of the world
who are unable to,
attend, if you will,
sessions whether because of the political situation like
a young woman in Gujarat who converted to
Islam or other parts of the world where
politically they're not able to find a religious
education. So I wanna thank all of you,
for your support and continued
engagement. What we'll do now is open it
up to any questions. If there are any
questions about the semester,
we're more than happy to take them from
you inshallah.

So a question that someone sent me is,
