I wanted to do a short series. Welcome

00:00:48 --> 00:00:51

from Knoxville, Tennessee. Beautiful city.

00:00:51 --> 00:00:52

I wanted to,

00:00:53 --> 00:00:55

first of all, just sort of lay out

00:00:55 --> 00:00:57

what you can expect over the next few

00:00:57 --> 00:00:57

weeks.

00:00:58 --> 00:00:59

And

00:01:00 --> 00:01:01

by the will of God Almighty,

00:01:02 --> 00:01:04

We hope it will be a a blessed

00:01:04 --> 00:01:06

gathering and one that is a benefit,

00:01:06 --> 00:01:08

but for by by the will of Allah.

00:01:08 --> 00:01:10

So tonight, what we're going to talk about

00:01:10 --> 00:01:12

is the first sort of

00:01:12 --> 00:01:16

prerequisite needed to understanding Islam's attitude towards

00:01:17 --> 00:01:18

resilience and suffering.

00:01:20 --> 00:01:22

Resilience and suffering.

00:01:22 --> 00:01:25

How do we put ourselves in a place

00:01:25 --> 00:01:25

to have a framework

00:01:26 --> 00:01:28

to understand Islam's attitude

00:01:29 --> 00:01:30

or teachings

00:01:30 --> 00:01:32

on the idea of resilience and suffering. So

00:01:32 --> 00:01:34

tonight, we'll break it into that sort of

00:01:34 --> 00:01:37

first piece where we'll talk about what is

00:01:37 --> 00:01:37

iman,

00:01:38 --> 00:01:40

what is faith, and what are the components

00:01:40 --> 00:01:41

of faith.

00:01:42 --> 00:01:44

The next week, we'll talk about one component

00:01:45 --> 00:01:48

of the foundational pillars of belief in Islam,

00:01:49 --> 00:01:49

which is

00:01:51 --> 00:01:53

everything that happens on our life, whether good

00:01:53 --> 00:01:55

or bad, theodicy. How How do we understand

00:01:55 --> 00:01:58

theodicy? Theodicy means why do things happen? So

00:01:58 --> 00:02:00

next week, we'll get into specifically

00:02:01 --> 00:02:03

what CS Lewis wrote about is the problem

00:02:03 --> 00:02:04

of suffering.

00:02:06 --> 00:02:09

What classical scholars talked about was the challenge

00:02:09 --> 00:02:12

of pain, the challenge of difficult times. It's

00:02:12 --> 00:02:14

very easy to be a committed

00:02:14 --> 00:02:17

believer. It's very easy to be committed when

00:02:17 --> 00:02:18

things are going well.

00:02:18 --> 00:02:20

But how do we maintain

00:02:20 --> 00:02:22

the proper attitude

00:02:22 --> 00:02:25

towards existential and internal threats

00:02:25 --> 00:02:28

as a Muslim so that we maintain the

00:02:28 --> 00:02:30

capacity for resilience? So we will talk about

00:02:30 --> 00:02:32

that next week. And then a few weeks

00:02:32 --> 00:02:35

after that, through my school Swiss,

00:02:35 --> 00:02:38

which will be free and online for everybody,

00:02:38 --> 00:02:40

we'll go through a poem called Admon Farija.

00:02:42 --> 00:02:43

Yeah. These are recorded here.

00:02:43 --> 00:02:45

Thank you for asking. And Al Mun Farijah

00:02:45 --> 00:02:47

is a brief poem

00:02:47 --> 00:02:49

written by a great scholar, Iva Nawi,

00:02:50 --> 00:02:50

on how to push

00:02:52 --> 00:02:53

in

00:02:53 --> 00:02:55

how to push into pain

00:02:56 --> 00:02:58

and how to push in

00:02:59 --> 00:03:00

to crisis

00:03:01 --> 00:03:03

and how to keep trauma in front of

00:03:03 --> 00:03:05

you instead of behind you.

00:03:06 --> 00:03:08

So this will be really 3 sessions.

00:03:09 --> 00:03:12

This this evening and then next week, Wednesday,

00:03:14 --> 00:03:15

And then a few weeks later, we have

00:03:15 --> 00:03:18

our Swiss winter retreat at my school, which

00:03:18 --> 00:03:19

will be free,

00:03:20 --> 00:03:21

for everybody.

00:03:21 --> 00:03:24

And we'll go through in one day or

00:03:24 --> 00:03:26

2 days, we'll see the poem of the

00:03:26 --> 00:03:26

imam,

00:03:27 --> 00:03:29

who's a great great scholar of Islam

00:03:30 --> 00:03:32

who wrote a poem called the reliever,

00:03:32 --> 00:03:34

which is dedicated

00:03:34 --> 00:03:35

solely to

00:03:36 --> 00:03:38

the challenge of difficult times.

00:03:39 --> 00:03:41

And I say that because there are a

00:03:41 --> 00:03:43

lot of messages, especially now with what's going

00:03:43 --> 00:03:44

on

00:03:44 --> 00:03:46

across the globe in Palestine,

00:03:48 --> 00:03:50

in the Congo, in the Sudan, in Afghanistan,

00:03:51 --> 00:03:53

and even here in the United States. These

00:03:53 --> 00:03:55

are difficult times to be a faithful person.

00:03:56 --> 00:03:59

But Islam, as we will learn, frames difficulty

00:04:00 --> 00:04:00

as opportunity.

00:04:01 --> 00:04:03

And we will talk about how

00:04:04 --> 00:04:07

the true believer, what you should take from

00:04:07 --> 00:04:08

this course,

00:04:09 --> 00:04:10

is that the true believer

00:04:11 --> 00:04:13

does not come out in submission

00:04:14 --> 00:04:14

to

00:04:15 --> 00:04:15

difficulties,

00:04:17 --> 00:04:20

nor are challenges and traumas and alibi to

00:04:20 --> 00:04:21

quit.

00:04:22 --> 00:04:24

But the true believer is the one that

00:04:24 --> 00:04:24

knows

00:04:25 --> 00:04:28

that they are commanded to oppose what Allah

00:04:28 --> 00:04:30

has decreed with what Allah has commanded.

00:04:32 --> 00:04:34

And that will be what we talk about

00:04:34 --> 00:04:36

next week. So whatever is happening in the

00:04:36 --> 00:04:39

world is no longer an excuse for me

00:04:39 --> 00:04:41

and alibi to submit to that.

00:04:42 --> 00:04:45

My submission is to Allah. I'm not Muslim

00:04:45 --> 00:04:46

to the dunya.

00:04:47 --> 00:04:48

I'm Muslim to Allah.

00:04:49 --> 00:04:51

And so that's where we want to arrive,

00:04:52 --> 00:04:54

by the end of our discussion next week.

00:04:54 --> 00:04:55

And then

00:04:56 --> 00:04:57

we will push through,

00:04:58 --> 00:05:00

a few weeks later with a poem at

00:05:00 --> 00:05:02

the Swiss winter retreat, which is online for

00:05:02 --> 00:05:03

free at my school.

00:05:04 --> 00:05:05

And we'll do it here

00:05:06 --> 00:05:07

as well as on the app and the

00:05:07 --> 00:05:08

web page at Swiss,

00:05:10 --> 00:05:11

on the problem of suffering.

00:05:13 --> 00:05:15

So what we wanna talk about tonight is

00:05:15 --> 00:05:17

faith. The idea of faith in Islam. And

00:05:17 --> 00:05:19

for those of you who are born Muslim,

00:05:19 --> 00:05:21

you're going to hear things that you may

00:05:21 --> 00:05:23

never have heard before that I really hope

00:05:23 --> 00:05:25

will be like emancipating

00:05:25 --> 00:05:27

and liberating and eye opening.

00:05:28 --> 00:05:30

And I encourage people who can to put

00:05:30 --> 00:05:33

notes into the comments box. The person who

00:05:33 --> 00:05:35

does the best notes, I give them lifetime

00:05:35 --> 00:05:37

free subscription to my school. I

00:05:39 --> 00:05:41

mean, out out of appreciation for you. So

00:05:41 --> 00:05:42

we begin.

00:05:45 --> 00:05:47

First of all, the idea of iman. Iman

00:05:47 --> 00:05:48

is translated as belief

00:05:49 --> 00:05:50

but the word iman actually is from a

00:05:50 --> 00:05:52

word which means to feel secure

00:05:53 --> 00:05:56

And that's very beautiful. It's very powerful. That

00:05:56 --> 00:05:57

the word for faith in Islam

00:05:58 --> 00:06:00

is from a word which means to feel

00:06:00 --> 00:06:00

safe.

00:06:02 --> 00:06:04

Because we should be safe with Allah.

00:06:05 --> 00:06:07

We should feel safe in our relationship with

00:06:07 --> 00:06:09

Allah. If you're an educator, I did my

00:06:09 --> 00:06:11

degree, my undergrad in education, you know, like

00:06:11 --> 00:06:14

Maslow's hierarchy of needs. People have to feel

00:06:14 --> 00:06:15

secure

00:06:15 --> 00:06:16

before they can learn.

00:06:17 --> 00:06:19

People have to feel secure before they can

00:06:19 --> 00:06:20

have Ma'rif of Allah.

00:06:23 --> 00:06:24

Thank you, Jibril.

00:06:24 --> 00:06:25

And that's why Allah

00:06:26 --> 00:06:28

who in in a chapter called she says,

00:06:31 --> 00:06:32

that Allah protected them

00:06:38 --> 00:06:39

The Right? Security,

00:06:40 --> 00:06:40

protection

00:06:42 --> 00:06:44

from. So iman is rooted in the idea

00:06:45 --> 00:06:46

of feeling safe and secure.

00:06:47 --> 00:06:48

And the epistemology

00:06:49 --> 00:06:52

of Islamic law or the framework of Islamic

00:06:52 --> 00:06:52

law,

00:06:54 --> 00:06:57

the definitions or nomenclature of Islamic law,

00:06:57 --> 00:06:58

The majority

00:06:58 --> 00:07:00

of of Sunni,

00:07:00 --> 00:07:03

Sunni theologians defined Iman as

00:07:04 --> 00:07:05

only.

00:07:07 --> 00:07:09

The affirmation of the heart.

00:07:11 --> 00:07:13

The affirmation of the heart. Because the outcome

00:07:13 --> 00:07:15

and I don't wanna make this too complicated

00:07:15 --> 00:07:18

for you, but the outcome of proper cognition

00:07:18 --> 00:07:19

is either

00:07:21 --> 00:07:24

or I affirm something or I deny something.

00:07:25 --> 00:07:27

And in order for me to strengthen my

00:07:27 --> 00:07:29

ability to affirm something,

00:07:30 --> 00:07:31

I have to know it. So Allah

00:07:32 --> 00:07:33

sends ayaat.

00:07:34 --> 00:07:36

He sends signs to us

00:07:36 --> 00:07:37

through his book,

00:07:37 --> 00:07:39

through the world that we live in, and

00:07:39 --> 00:07:40

even on ourselves.

00:07:41 --> 00:07:42

As he

00:07:45 --> 00:07:45

says,

00:07:46 --> 00:07:47

in yourself

00:07:47 --> 00:07:48

are signs.

00:07:49 --> 00:07:51

And that's why in the Quran, we are

00:07:51 --> 00:07:53

commanded to do

00:07:54 --> 00:07:54

of the creation.

00:07:55 --> 00:07:57

I had a great teacher from Iraq, and

00:07:57 --> 00:07:59

we we forget to make dua for the

00:07:59 --> 00:08:01

people of Iraq a lot, man.

00:08:01 --> 00:08:03

But they went through *.

00:08:04 --> 00:08:05

And,

00:08:05 --> 00:08:06

you know,

00:08:07 --> 00:08:09

we have to continue to remember people

00:08:10 --> 00:08:12

because those are our brothers and sisters,

00:08:13 --> 00:08:15

And and there are also our human brothers

00:08:15 --> 00:08:15

and sisters.

00:08:17 --> 00:08:18

And Allah sometimes

00:08:18 --> 00:08:20

in the Quran, he calls the believers

00:08:21 --> 00:08:22

the Allah

00:08:23 --> 00:08:24

says, you know,

00:08:27 --> 00:08:28

doesn't say

00:08:30 --> 00:08:32

as the believers believe, no, it says as

00:08:32 --> 00:08:33

the people believe. And if you speak out

00:08:33 --> 00:08:34

of it here, it's

00:08:34 --> 00:08:37

as the best people because to be a

00:08:37 --> 00:08:39

Muslim is to achieve, as we heard from

00:08:39 --> 00:08:41

Imam Wadi Muhammad years ago,

00:08:42 --> 00:08:44

to treat, to achieve

00:08:45 --> 00:08:46

your true human

00:08:47 --> 00:08:50

potential. So sometimes instead of calling us believers,

00:08:50 --> 00:08:52

the Quran calls us human beings to remind

00:08:52 --> 00:08:54

us that the should lead to character

00:08:55 --> 00:08:58

that shows we have reached the epitome

00:08:58 --> 00:09:00

of our humanity through the sunnah of Sayna

00:09:00 --> 00:09:02

Muhammad sallallahu alaihi wa sallam. Also, Imam Al

00:09:02 --> 00:09:03

Razi.

00:09:04 --> 00:09:04

He

00:09:06 --> 00:09:08

said this. So iman is from the word

00:09:08 --> 00:09:10

which means to affirm. So

00:09:11 --> 00:09:13

with all of the signs around me,

00:09:14 --> 00:09:16

to affirm in my heart

00:09:16 --> 00:09:18

based on cognition

00:09:18 --> 00:09:19

that Allah is Allah.

00:09:21 --> 00:09:23

And that's extremely important.

00:09:24 --> 00:09:25

And that's why signs are sent. And that's

00:09:25 --> 00:09:27

why in the Quran as I was saying,

00:09:27 --> 00:09:28

we are

00:09:28 --> 00:09:29

commanded to

00:09:33 --> 00:09:35

we are commanded to ponder

00:09:36 --> 00:09:38

and think deeply on the creations of the

00:09:38 --> 00:09:39

heavens and the earth.

00:09:40 --> 00:09:41

And as I was saying, I had a

00:09:41 --> 00:09:43

teacher from Iraq. Listen to what he used

00:09:43 --> 00:09:45

to say. It's really beautiful. He was a

00:09:45 --> 00:09:45

great scholar.

00:09:46 --> 00:09:49

He used to say, it's an obligation for

00:09:49 --> 00:09:50

the believer to do

00:09:51 --> 00:09:52

Quran or

00:09:55 --> 00:09:57

If you speak like Arabic, it's so beautiful.

00:09:57 --> 00:09:57

Right?

00:10:04 --> 00:10:07

That that the person should recite the Quran,

00:10:08 --> 00:10:09

and they should recite creation.

00:10:11 --> 00:10:13

So the believer, the Muslim, is the one

00:10:13 --> 00:10:15

who's reading the Quran and reading the signs

00:10:16 --> 00:10:18

of the world around them and in themselves.

00:10:19 --> 00:10:19

So

00:10:21 --> 00:10:24

in what? This is identified, of course,

00:10:24 --> 00:10:26

by the Quran and the prophet

00:10:27 --> 00:10:29

to affirm Allah

00:10:30 --> 00:10:31

that there is nothing like him, that he

00:10:31 --> 00:10:34

is unique. He has no similarities.

00:10:34 --> 00:10:36

Subhanahu wa ta'ala

00:10:36 --> 00:10:38

to affirm our faith

00:10:39 --> 00:10:39

in the prophet

00:10:41 --> 00:10:42

and all of the prophets

00:10:43 --> 00:10:45

to affirm our faith in the hereafter. And

00:10:45 --> 00:10:47

the hereafter isn't just the day of judgment.

00:10:47 --> 00:10:49

The hereafter as soon

00:10:49 --> 00:10:51

as we as we die,

00:10:52 --> 00:10:54

that's our. We ask Allah to make it

00:10:54 --> 00:10:55

easy for us

00:10:55 --> 00:10:57

to affirm our belief in the angels,

00:10:58 --> 00:10:59

to affirm our belief

00:11:01 --> 00:11:02

in theodicy that

00:11:03 --> 00:11:05

whatever happens good or bad is from Allah.

00:11:05 --> 00:11:08

There's no will in the universe that causes

00:11:08 --> 00:11:10

anything except the will of Allah.

00:11:11 --> 00:11:12

You read.

00:11:14 --> 00:11:15

The prophet said, we believe

00:11:16 --> 00:11:17

in Allah

00:11:18 --> 00:11:20

whatever has been decreed whether good or bad

00:11:20 --> 00:11:21

is from Allah. The Quran says

00:11:23 --> 00:11:26

say everything is from Allah. So in short,

00:11:26 --> 00:11:28

because most of us we know this, but

00:11:28 --> 00:11:29

I want you to pay attention because we're

00:11:29 --> 00:11:31

about to blast off and you need to

00:11:31 --> 00:11:32

put on your seat belt, tighten up your

00:11:32 --> 00:11:34

kufi or whatever because you're about to go

00:11:34 --> 00:11:35

on a journey

00:11:36 --> 00:11:37

of a place that you may have never

00:11:37 --> 00:11:39

been before. And so you need to pay

00:11:39 --> 00:11:41

attention to this because what happens when we

00:11:41 --> 00:11:42

teach

00:11:43 --> 00:11:45

and when we teach theology, if we are

00:11:45 --> 00:11:45

infected

00:11:46 --> 00:11:49

by sort of a post colonial hangover, which

00:11:49 --> 00:11:52

has within it a cocktail of anti Muslim,

00:11:53 --> 00:11:55

bigotry and racism coupled with hatred

00:11:56 --> 00:11:58

for Muslim people.

00:11:58 --> 00:11:59

You may inadvertently

00:12:00 --> 00:12:00

when you're teaching

00:12:01 --> 00:12:02

be subliminally

00:12:03 --> 00:12:06

directing your hatred towards Muslims because the broader

00:12:06 --> 00:12:06

white system

00:12:16 --> 00:12:18

unfortunately people who are teaching iman,

00:12:18 --> 00:12:21

that they are creating more division than unity

00:12:21 --> 00:12:23

amongst the Muslims. That's a problem in our

00:12:23 --> 00:12:25

pedagogy. That's a problem in how we're teaching.

00:12:26 --> 00:12:27

And I'll give you the proof.

00:12:27 --> 00:12:30

The Sahaba, doctor Mariam, I hope you're doing

00:12:30 --> 00:12:32

good and congratulations. I know I'm gonna I'm

00:12:32 --> 00:12:33

gonna be in touch with you. I promise.

00:12:33 --> 00:12:35

But Mubarak doctor Mariam, she

00:12:35 --> 00:12:37

very happy for her. So

00:12:39 --> 00:12:41

if we look at the Sahaba, I want

00:12:41 --> 00:12:43

everyone here to think about a critical question.

00:12:44 --> 00:12:45

The

00:12:45 --> 00:12:47

were acutely divided.

00:12:48 --> 00:12:49

Right before Islam,

00:12:50 --> 00:12:51

they hated each other.

00:12:52 --> 00:12:53

They were enemies.

00:12:55 --> 00:12:57

Allah says you were enemies to one another.

00:13:04 --> 00:13:05

And Allah united you

00:13:07 --> 00:13:08

united you,

00:13:09 --> 00:13:11

and you became brothers and sisters.

00:13:11 --> 00:13:13

That was the case of the people around

00:13:13 --> 00:13:16

prophet Muhammad peace be upon him. Before they

00:13:16 --> 00:13:18

embraced Islam, they were enemies.

00:13:18 --> 00:13:22

They embraced Islam. They learned Islam, and they

00:13:22 --> 00:13:24

loved each other. Now I want you to

00:13:24 --> 00:13:25

listen to this question critically.

00:13:27 --> 00:13:29

Most of the classes on aqidah that we're

00:13:29 --> 00:13:30

seeing in theology,

00:13:31 --> 00:13:33

Muslims will attend those classes

00:13:34 --> 00:13:35

loving each other,

00:13:35 --> 00:13:37

but when they leave that class, they will

00:13:37 --> 00:13:38

what?

00:13:39 --> 00:13:40

They will hate Muslims

00:13:42 --> 00:13:44

more than anyone else. Hating is a whole

00:13:44 --> 00:13:45

another discussion.

00:13:46 --> 00:13:48

So they they they step into

00:13:48 --> 00:13:50

1 zero one, whatever class they're taking,

00:13:51 --> 00:13:53

and they're they see themselves as part of

00:13:53 --> 00:13:55

a Muslim community, the Ummah.

00:13:55 --> 00:13:58

They leave that aqidah class and they see

00:13:58 --> 00:13:59

themselves

00:14:00 --> 00:14:02

as being in opposition to the rest of

00:14:02 --> 00:14:04

the ummah. That that should make us think

00:14:05 --> 00:14:07

that we're not teaching in a prophetic way.

00:14:07 --> 00:14:09

Because the prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam when

00:14:09 --> 00:14:11

it came to the believers and to the

00:14:11 --> 00:14:12

broader Muslim community,

00:14:13 --> 00:14:14

he brought them together.

00:14:15 --> 00:14:17

He brought them together. He did not inflame

00:14:18 --> 00:14:18

divisions

00:14:19 --> 00:14:21

amongst the Muslims. So that means we have

00:14:21 --> 00:14:23

to really sit back now

00:14:23 --> 00:14:26

and not blame teachers and not blame imams.

00:14:26 --> 00:14:28

I'm responsible for how I react to what

00:14:28 --> 00:14:29

I'm being taught.

00:14:30 --> 00:14:32

I have a responsibility to use discernment.

00:14:33 --> 00:14:36

Means creed and and theology, faith. So a

00:14:36 --> 00:14:38

person will come and learn faith or learn

00:14:38 --> 00:14:40

dogma, if you will, religious faith, and they

00:14:40 --> 00:14:41

will leave

00:14:42 --> 00:14:45

as a divided fractured community, whereas in the

00:14:45 --> 00:14:47

time of the prophet, peace be upon him,

00:14:47 --> 00:14:50

they were divided, they learned faith, and we're

00:14:50 --> 00:14:52

talking about people who were, you

00:14:53 --> 00:14:54

know, they had serious

00:14:55 --> 00:14:56

hatred for one another,

00:14:57 --> 00:14:58

and they became brothers.

00:15:00 --> 00:15:01

They became sisters.

00:15:03 --> 00:15:05

So I want you now to pay attention

00:15:05 --> 00:15:07

to something and then I'm going to stop

00:15:08 --> 00:15:10

and take any questions that you have.

00:15:10 --> 00:15:11

Because

00:15:11 --> 00:15:13

as I said, there are 4 parts to

00:15:13 --> 00:15:14

this discussion.

00:15:15 --> 00:15:17

And and the purpose of this discussion is

00:15:17 --> 00:15:19

to strengthen the resolve

00:15:19 --> 00:15:22

of the people who are aligned on the

00:15:22 --> 00:15:24

right side of history

00:15:24 --> 00:15:26

and standing up for justice in the Muslim

00:15:26 --> 00:15:29

community and that are being pounded and constantly

00:15:29 --> 00:15:30

told

00:15:30 --> 00:15:32

for you to stand up against injustice

00:15:33 --> 00:15:35

or for you to be upset with things

00:15:35 --> 00:15:37

in the world is somehow now parallel to

00:15:37 --> 00:15:39

you not being pleased with god.

00:15:39 --> 00:15:41

That is a major mistake.

00:15:42 --> 00:15:43

And I'll just say it in Arabic and

00:15:43 --> 00:15:45

you'll understand it. As soon as I say

00:15:45 --> 00:15:47

this is the beauty of Arabic, it'll be

00:15:47 --> 00:15:49

very clear and I'll translate it, but this

00:15:49 --> 00:15:50

is where I want you to be by

00:15:50 --> 00:15:51

next week.

00:16:03 --> 00:16:05

There is a difference between being pleased with

00:16:05 --> 00:16:07

god who decreed all things

00:16:07 --> 00:16:10

and what he decreed with what he decreed,

00:16:10 --> 00:16:11

excuse me.

00:16:11 --> 00:16:13

Because we we have to be pleased with

00:16:13 --> 00:16:14

god.

00:16:15 --> 00:16:17

I'm pleased with god as my lord and

00:16:17 --> 00:16:19

my everything that happens. But what Allah has

00:16:19 --> 00:16:22

decreed, the Quran may in fact have commanded

00:16:22 --> 00:16:23

me to hate it.

00:16:24 --> 00:16:25

For example, sin.

00:16:26 --> 00:16:28

You can't just say, well, you know, it's

00:16:28 --> 00:16:28

okay.

00:16:29 --> 00:16:31

God decreed sin, so no problem. No. The

00:16:31 --> 00:16:34

Quran commands us to try to,

00:16:35 --> 00:16:37

call people away from sin a sinful life

00:16:37 --> 00:16:39

with wisdom and love and caring.

00:16:40 --> 00:16:41

So I want you to appreciate there is

00:16:41 --> 00:16:42

a difference between

00:16:43 --> 00:16:44

and

00:16:44 --> 00:16:45

with

00:16:47 --> 00:16:51

the with Allah, being content with Allah is

00:16:51 --> 00:16:51

unconditional.

00:16:53 --> 00:16:55

Being content with what Allah has decreed

00:16:56 --> 00:16:58

in its details is conditional.

00:16:58 --> 00:17:00

If what he has decreed aligns with his

00:17:00 --> 00:17:01

command,

00:17:01 --> 00:17:04

I'm happy. If what he has decreed is

00:17:04 --> 00:17:06

not aligned with what he's commanded,

00:17:06 --> 00:17:09

I submit to his command in the face

00:17:09 --> 00:17:11

of existential collapse

00:17:11 --> 00:17:13

because I do not submit to the world.

00:17:13 --> 00:17:15

I submit to the lord of the worlds.

00:17:16 --> 00:17:18

And this is the edifice of what it

00:17:18 --> 00:17:20

means to be Muslim. To submit

00:17:20 --> 00:17:23

in the face of what you see, contradicting

00:17:23 --> 00:17:25

what you've been commanded, you choose the command.

00:17:26 --> 00:17:27

And if you're a Sufi,

00:17:28 --> 00:17:30

you should be the one that is most

00:17:30 --> 00:17:31

invested against injustice

00:17:32 --> 00:17:34

because you understand understand that you are commanded

00:17:34 --> 00:17:36

to worship Allah as you see him even

00:17:36 --> 00:17:37

though you can't see him, you know he

00:17:37 --> 00:17:39

sees you. What does it mean? It means

00:17:39 --> 00:17:41

when everything around me is evil, when everything

00:17:41 --> 00:17:44

around me is falling apart, I worship Allah

00:17:44 --> 00:17:46

as though I see him. I'm not blinded

00:17:46 --> 00:17:48

by the dunya. I'm blinded by the nur

00:17:48 --> 00:17:51

of Allah, and I choose what's with Allah,

00:17:51 --> 00:17:53

and I go against the dunya. That's what

00:17:53 --> 00:17:54

Ihsan is.

00:18:00 --> 00:18:01

That's what it means.

00:18:02 --> 00:18:04

It's not some Barnes and Noble,

00:18:04 --> 00:18:05

hemp underwear,

00:18:06 --> 00:18:10

white people smoking hookah quoting some buckwas roomie.

00:18:10 --> 00:18:12

That's not that's not what that is.

00:18:12 --> 00:18:14

What it means to be to

00:18:14 --> 00:18:15

Allah

00:18:15 --> 00:18:18

is to seek the path to choose his

00:18:18 --> 00:18:18

command,

00:18:20 --> 00:18:21

and that's the purpose of.

00:18:22 --> 00:18:23

Is not haram police.

00:18:24 --> 00:18:27

We shouldn't reduce Islamic law to something this

00:18:27 --> 00:18:27

shallow.

00:18:28 --> 00:18:30

Islamic law is meant to remind me

00:18:31 --> 00:18:33

what choice to make

00:18:33 --> 00:18:36

when the dunya contradicts the command.

00:18:36 --> 00:18:39

And that's why if you say the word

00:18:39 --> 00:18:40

Muslim,

00:18:41 --> 00:18:42

it means to submit.

00:18:42 --> 00:18:45

You should ask yourself, what? Submit to what?

00:18:45 --> 00:18:48

To submit to Allah. What does that mean?

00:18:48 --> 00:18:50

That means to submit to him

00:18:50 --> 00:18:53

when the world fails to align with the

00:18:53 --> 00:18:54

Haqq.

00:18:54 --> 00:18:56

And I just gave you the secret to

00:18:56 --> 00:18:56

everything.

00:18:57 --> 00:18:57

So, therefore,

00:18:58 --> 00:19:00

any injustice that's happening

00:19:01 --> 00:19:03

should never be used as an alibi to

00:19:03 --> 00:19:05

tap out to the dunya.

00:19:05 --> 00:19:07

Any injustice that's happening,

00:19:07 --> 00:19:08

whether it's Palestine,

00:19:09 --> 00:19:10

whether it's

00:19:11 --> 00:19:13

in in Harlem where I used to live,

00:19:13 --> 00:19:15

whether it's in California, whether it's in Bangladesh,

00:19:15 --> 00:19:18

whether it's in Yemen, whether it's with Wehore,

00:19:18 --> 00:19:20

but wherever injustice with its with the non

00:19:20 --> 00:19:21

Muslims also.

00:19:22 --> 00:19:24

I don't use that as an excuse to

00:19:24 --> 00:19:27

submit to injustice and say, it's from Allah.

00:19:28 --> 00:19:30

I'm reminded that this is an opportunity

00:19:31 --> 00:19:32

to pass the test.

00:19:34 --> 00:19:35

And this is the test that's talked about

00:19:35 --> 00:19:36

in the Quran.

00:19:42 --> 00:19:44

Who created death and life to test you.

00:19:44 --> 00:19:46

What is the test when that contradiction happens?

00:19:46 --> 00:19:48

And you think about it when you're younger,

00:19:48 --> 00:19:49

I remember when I became Muslim, I used

00:19:49 --> 00:19:51

to say, why is everyone a disbeliever?

00:19:52 --> 00:19:54

Why is everyone off the wrong right path?

00:19:54 --> 00:19:56

Why is everyone living a life of sin?

00:19:56 --> 00:19:58

And Shaitan came to me, and he was

00:19:58 --> 00:19:59

like, you know, Khalas,

00:20:00 --> 00:20:03

you you you everyone around you is imploding.

00:20:03 --> 00:20:04

So, you know, this is from Allah, so

00:20:04 --> 00:20:06

you should go ahead and just implode. No.

00:20:06 --> 00:20:08

No. The believer is the opposite, and

00:20:09 --> 00:20:09

this

00:20:09 --> 00:20:10

is

00:20:10 --> 00:20:11

why

00:20:11 --> 00:20:12

we

00:20:12 --> 00:20:14

say And that's why the oath in Surat

00:20:14 --> 00:20:16

Al Asr is by time because throughout time,

00:20:16 --> 00:20:18

this contradiction will happen until

00:20:23 --> 00:20:25

until the last day where Allah

00:20:26 --> 00:20:28

makes it very clear who is the one

00:20:28 --> 00:20:29

that runs

00:20:29 --> 00:20:30

everything

00:20:31 --> 00:20:34

runs everything. So before I jump off, I

00:20:34 --> 00:20:35

gave you a little segue for what to

00:20:35 --> 00:20:37

expect for next week and how we lay

00:20:37 --> 00:20:40

a true foundation for liberation theology in Islam.

00:20:40 --> 00:20:42

What I just gave you if you're an

00:20:42 --> 00:20:44

activist or if you're an academic in Brevity

00:20:44 --> 00:20:47

is the foundation of liberation theology within Islam

00:20:47 --> 00:20:50

as it comes through our classically trained scholars.

00:20:50 --> 00:20:51

And I want to

00:20:52 --> 00:20:54

say something here about

00:20:54 --> 00:20:56

the classically trained

00:20:56 --> 00:20:58

scholars and the tradition.

00:20:59 --> 00:21:00

Why is the tradition and what I'm giving

00:21:00 --> 00:21:02

you basically is from Razi, Rahimullah.

00:21:04 --> 00:21:05

Why is the tradition

00:21:06 --> 00:21:06

important?

00:21:08 --> 00:21:11

Because the traditional Muslims were not colonized.

00:21:12 --> 00:21:15

And the Muslims of old had in Islam.

00:21:15 --> 00:21:18

The scholars of old, they had a certain

00:21:18 --> 00:21:20

swagger about them.

00:21:20 --> 00:21:21

They had a certain

00:21:22 --> 00:21:24

belief in the utility and agency

00:21:24 --> 00:21:25

and Haq of Islam

00:21:26 --> 00:21:28

that they were not writing

00:21:29 --> 00:21:29

as

00:21:30 --> 00:21:32

people who were feeling that they were being

00:21:32 --> 00:21:33

pressured or defeated.

00:21:35 --> 00:21:37

They wrote as people who believe that Allah

00:21:37 --> 00:21:38

was with them.

00:21:39 --> 00:21:41

So there's a sense of of of

00:21:41 --> 00:21:43

in the in the There is a sense

00:21:43 --> 00:21:44

of strength

00:21:45 --> 00:21:46

that will remind you, and that's why when

00:21:46 --> 00:21:48

we look at Palestinian people, we look at

00:21:48 --> 00:21:50

people in Sudan, and we look at people,

00:21:50 --> 00:21:51

the

00:21:51 --> 00:21:53

we see through their eyes

00:21:54 --> 00:21:55

our spiritual

00:21:55 --> 00:21:55

ancestors

00:21:56 --> 00:21:57

who remind us

00:21:58 --> 00:21:58

of the

00:21:59 --> 00:22:00

power to be resolute

00:22:01 --> 00:22:02

and to be strong

00:22:03 --> 00:22:04

and never to be weak.

00:22:05 --> 00:22:09

That's why Allah says, don't don't be depressed

00:22:09 --> 00:22:10

and don't give up.

00:22:11 --> 00:22:12

And the Quran, what does it

00:22:15 --> 00:22:15

say?

00:22:17 --> 00:22:19

If you meet your enemies in the battlefield,

00:22:20 --> 00:22:21

be strong.

00:22:21 --> 00:22:22

Don't be weak.

00:22:22 --> 00:22:25

That was this these battles are these verses

00:22:25 --> 00:22:26

are sent about jihad.

00:22:27 --> 00:22:29

If you meet them in the battlefield,

00:22:29 --> 00:22:30

be firm

00:22:31 --> 00:22:31

and make

00:22:33 --> 00:22:33

because

00:22:34 --> 00:22:37

centers this around God, centers this around Allah.

00:22:39 --> 00:22:41

So before I quit, we're talking about iman,

00:22:41 --> 00:22:43

and I'm gonna tell you something that you

00:22:43 --> 00:22:45

may never have heard before, but I want

00:22:45 --> 00:22:46

you to let it sort of,

00:22:49 --> 00:22:49

you know,

00:22:51 --> 00:22:53

rest with you and and settle with you

00:22:53 --> 00:22:56

and and be part of your week So

00:22:56 --> 00:22:58

that when you come next week,

00:22:58 --> 00:22:59

we're able to

00:23:00 --> 00:23:02

have an important conversation about the challenge of

00:23:02 --> 00:23:04

theodicy and pain and suffering.

00:23:04 --> 00:23:06

And I appreciate a lot of people here.

00:23:06 --> 00:23:06

And

00:23:09 --> 00:23:12

and I want to encourage you

00:23:12 --> 00:23:14

to to think about what I'm about to

00:23:14 --> 00:23:17

share. And also ignore, like, trolls, ignore weird

00:23:17 --> 00:23:19

people in the in comments box. Man, those

00:23:19 --> 00:23:20

people make dua for them. Obviously, they're very

00:23:20 --> 00:23:22

lonely, man. Go make some coffee, bro.

00:23:25 --> 00:23:27

You know, like, don't don't respond with abuse

00:23:27 --> 00:23:28

because

00:23:29 --> 00:23:31

people that are taking the time out of

00:23:31 --> 00:23:32

their day, doctor Marion can chime in on

00:23:32 --> 00:23:35

this, people that have enough time in their

00:23:35 --> 00:23:37

day to come into some chat or some

00:23:37 --> 00:23:39

live and start hating on people, those are

00:23:39 --> 00:23:41

broken people, man.

00:23:42 --> 00:23:43

Those are people that are alone,

00:23:44 --> 00:23:46

Right? They're hurting. We pray for their healing.

00:23:47 --> 00:23:49

Oh, I got 4 kids. You don't know.

00:23:49 --> 00:23:50

Coffee at this hour?

00:23:50 --> 00:23:52

I got 4 ones. I got 2 little

00:23:52 --> 00:23:54

babies that in the next hour are gonna

00:23:54 --> 00:23:55

be like,

00:23:55 --> 00:23:56

baba,

00:23:56 --> 00:23:57

let's pray to Hajjid.

00:23:58 --> 00:23:59

Baba,

00:24:00 --> 00:24:02

at 2 o'clock in the morning.

00:24:03 --> 00:24:05

And welcome we welcome you, Ria, to the

00:24:05 --> 00:24:07

to the set. And again, this is open

00:24:07 --> 00:24:09

for everybody, Muslims, non Muslims, whoever,

00:24:10 --> 00:24:11

you know, it's not that kind of crowd.

00:24:11 --> 00:24:13

Folks that kinda roll with me, they tend

00:24:13 --> 00:24:15

to be lovers, man, not haters.

00:24:17 --> 00:24:17

So

00:24:18 --> 00:24:20

Iman is often translated, and I want you

00:24:20 --> 00:24:22

to pay attention to this. Iman is often

00:24:22 --> 00:24:24

translated as faith in god,

00:24:25 --> 00:24:27

And this is going to be important in

00:24:27 --> 00:24:30

offering a cadence and helping us sort of,

00:24:30 --> 00:24:33

animate our discussion for next week. Blame the

00:24:33 --> 00:24:35

label, sir, baby. See you, man.

00:24:37 --> 00:24:38

Number 1 is

00:24:39 --> 00:24:41

when you go to Sunday school or you

00:24:41 --> 00:24:41

take

00:24:42 --> 00:24:45

classes, say, as a young person,

00:24:47 --> 00:24:50

you hear the word iman in God,

00:24:50 --> 00:24:53

faith in God, faith in Allah,

00:24:53 --> 00:24:54

faith in the prophet,

00:24:55 --> 00:24:56

faith

00:24:57 --> 00:24:58

in the angels,

00:24:58 --> 00:25:00

but that's not what it means.

00:25:00 --> 00:25:03

And the reason that's very important is because

00:25:04 --> 00:25:05

words have meanings.

00:25:05 --> 00:25:06

And and

00:25:07 --> 00:25:07

and Malik Shabaz,

00:25:09 --> 00:25:10

Malcolm x,

00:25:11 --> 00:25:14

he said that when you understand words, you

00:25:14 --> 00:25:15

change your attitudes, and when you change your

00:25:15 --> 00:25:17

attitudes, you change your actions.

00:25:20 --> 00:25:21

You know? So it's very important. And I

00:25:21 --> 00:25:23

want those who are asking about

00:25:24 --> 00:25:27

and this in the comments box. Hey man,

00:25:27 --> 00:25:29

listen to the lecture, pay attention, Shaitan got

00:25:29 --> 00:25:31

you busy with something else.

00:25:31 --> 00:25:33

You know, if you were in front of

00:25:33 --> 00:25:35

me, you wouldn't do that. If I was

00:25:35 --> 00:25:36

in front of you, I wouldn't do that.

00:25:36 --> 00:25:37

So I like to tell people when you

00:25:37 --> 00:25:39

attend lives on Instagram,

00:25:39 --> 00:25:40

act like you would if you were in

00:25:40 --> 00:25:41

front of the people.

00:25:42 --> 00:25:44

And try to listen and pay attention because

00:25:44 --> 00:25:45

what I'm about to share with you, I

00:25:45 --> 00:25:48

think, is very important and very transformative.

00:25:48 --> 00:25:50

And it will bring us together,

00:25:51 --> 00:25:52

but I love your passion.

00:25:53 --> 00:25:55

And that is that often through Sunday school

00:25:55 --> 00:25:56

and through,

00:25:57 --> 00:25:59

you know, our training as young Muslims and

00:25:59 --> 00:26:02

and teenagers, we're told faith in God. Faith

00:26:02 --> 00:26:05

in God. Faith in the angels. Faith in

00:26:05 --> 00:26:07

this. Faith in that. Faith in that. But

00:26:07 --> 00:26:07

the word

00:26:08 --> 00:26:09

doesn't mean in.

00:26:10 --> 00:26:11

The word

00:26:12 --> 00:26:13

means with.

00:26:14 --> 00:26:15

So if I say in Arabic,

00:26:17 --> 00:26:18

I came

00:26:18 --> 00:26:19

with

00:26:20 --> 00:26:21

Amr.

00:26:21 --> 00:26:23

Amrani, I'm gonna get to you. May Allah

00:26:23 --> 00:26:25

bless you with good health. I promise I

00:26:25 --> 00:26:27

will share duash soon. I see you.

00:26:28 --> 00:26:30

Have a sister who's asking about, you know,

00:26:30 --> 00:26:32

make du'a for good health. 1st, we pray

00:26:32 --> 00:26:33

for her. Everyone say, I mean,

00:26:34 --> 00:26:34

that Allah

00:26:36 --> 00:26:38

grant her a great shifa or whoever she's

00:26:38 --> 00:26:41

worried about needing healing. May Allah heal them.

00:26:41 --> 00:26:43

So let me focus, folks.

00:26:44 --> 00:26:45

So the word is,

00:26:47 --> 00:26:49

but the word b doesn't mean in. And

00:26:49 --> 00:26:51

this is very important if as we

00:26:52 --> 00:26:52

expand

00:26:53 --> 00:26:54

next week our discussion.

00:26:55 --> 00:26:57

That when you say faith in god, you're

00:26:57 --> 00:26:58

limiting the meaning.

00:26:59 --> 00:27:01

It actually means faith with god.

00:27:02 --> 00:27:04

It's an alaka. It's

00:27:06 --> 00:27:07

it's a relationship.

00:27:08 --> 00:27:10

If you say faith in something in in

00:27:10 --> 00:27:13

in our understanding, in Islamic theology, we understand

00:27:13 --> 00:27:15

that to be the acquisition of axiomatic

00:27:15 --> 00:27:18

principles and rules that teach you theology. That's

00:27:18 --> 00:27:19

in.

00:27:20 --> 00:27:21

That's in.

00:27:22 --> 00:27:24

So that means that Islam, if we say

00:27:24 --> 00:27:27

it's in, it frames theology as simply a

00:27:27 --> 00:27:28

cognitive exercise.

00:27:29 --> 00:27:30

So I've learned

00:27:31 --> 00:27:31

iman,

00:27:32 --> 00:27:34

and no doubt that's important.

00:27:34 --> 00:27:36

But when I say with,

00:27:37 --> 00:27:39

that implies a whole another ballgame.

00:27:40 --> 00:27:42

And that's why in, we say

00:27:43 --> 00:27:45

I came with Amr, not in Amr.

00:27:53 --> 00:27:54

Something really beautiful.

00:27:57 --> 00:27:59

Welcome new convert. Hey. I've been in your

00:27:59 --> 00:28:01

shoes. If I say anything you don't understand,

00:28:01 --> 00:28:03

put me in check. Okay, Enzo?

00:28:04 --> 00:28:05

I got you.

00:28:06 --> 00:28:08

So the verse says, those who believe it's

00:28:08 --> 00:28:10

translated, if you look at it, those who

00:28:10 --> 00:28:11

believe in the unseen.

00:28:12 --> 00:28:14

But Al Qadi al Baqir

00:28:14 --> 00:28:17

al Madiki, he says that this bat listen

00:28:17 --> 00:28:18

in Arabic what it's called.

00:28:23 --> 00:28:23

What does

00:28:24 --> 00:28:25

mean in English?

00:28:25 --> 00:28:27

Companionship. From the same word as Sahabi

00:28:29 --> 00:28:30

The same word as Sahabi.

00:28:31 --> 00:28:33

The Sahaba of the prophet.

00:28:34 --> 00:28:35

Sahaba.

00:28:36 --> 00:28:36

So

00:28:37 --> 00:28:38

I believe

00:28:38 --> 00:28:39

with Allah

00:28:40 --> 00:28:42

in the sense of I have this relationship,

00:28:42 --> 00:28:43

this companionship

00:28:43 --> 00:28:45

with my iman.

00:28:45 --> 00:28:46

It's not just

00:28:47 --> 00:28:51

in. It's with my being. And we talk

00:28:51 --> 00:28:52

about the idea of mindfulness,

00:28:53 --> 00:28:54

the idea of presence,

00:28:55 --> 00:28:57

the idea of putting ourselves into

00:28:57 --> 00:28:59

pushing into a situation.

00:29:02 --> 00:29:05

The Quran says you must push into Islam

00:29:05 --> 00:29:06

completely.

00:29:08 --> 00:29:10

So instead of saying,

00:29:11 --> 00:29:13

Robert, I invite you to embrace Islam right

00:29:13 --> 00:29:15

now. We got Robert Benjamin. He said he

00:29:15 --> 00:29:17

asked me to embrace Islam. Hey. I'm I'm

00:29:17 --> 00:29:19

inviting you right now. Welcome, man. Don't delay

00:29:19 --> 00:29:21

the goodness, bro.

00:29:21 --> 00:29:22

Jump in.

00:29:24 --> 00:29:25

So what does it mean?

00:29:26 --> 00:29:28

As I finish quickly, sorry.

00:29:28 --> 00:29:29

Iman

00:29:30 --> 00:29:31

with Allah

00:29:31 --> 00:29:33

implies not only learning

00:29:35 --> 00:29:37

and not only feeling,

00:29:38 --> 00:29:39

but a choice

00:29:43 --> 00:29:43

A choice.

00:29:44 --> 00:29:46

So the choices that I make

00:29:47 --> 00:29:48

are going to be indicative

00:29:49 --> 00:29:50

of the strength of that relationship.

00:29:52 --> 00:29:55

I am the Sahib of iman, and iman

00:29:55 --> 00:29:57

is the Sahib of me.

00:29:58 --> 00:30:00

And if you think about what I just

00:30:00 --> 00:30:00

said,

00:30:01 --> 00:30:02

that's

00:30:02 --> 00:30:03

why Allah says

00:30:09 --> 00:30:10

Quran says very beautifully

00:30:15 --> 00:30:17

If you are thankful to me,

00:30:17 --> 00:30:20

I will increase you this reciprocal relationship.

00:30:21 --> 00:30:22

Allah

00:30:33 --> 00:30:36

So now let's let's take it a step

00:30:36 --> 00:30:36

back quickly.

00:30:37 --> 00:30:39

And the next week will continue.

00:30:39 --> 00:30:41

If we say that Iman is to believe

00:30:41 --> 00:30:42

with Allah,

00:30:43 --> 00:30:44

with the angels,

00:30:45 --> 00:30:46

with the messengers,

00:30:47 --> 00:30:48

with the books,

00:30:49 --> 00:30:49

with the hereafter,

00:30:50 --> 00:30:53

and with the decree, what that implies is

00:30:53 --> 00:30:54

when that

00:30:54 --> 00:30:55

withness runs into contradictions,

00:30:57 --> 00:30:59

I choose what's with Allah.

00:31:01 --> 00:31:02

I choose what's with Allah.

00:31:06 --> 00:31:07

I choose what's with Allah.

00:31:10 --> 00:31:12

And let me give you some examples and

00:31:12 --> 00:31:13

we'll stop.

00:31:13 --> 00:31:15

Of course, it doesn't mean we're with Allah

00:31:15 --> 00:31:17

physically. Allah is beyond creation. He's not part

00:31:17 --> 00:31:19

of creation or in creation. We know that

00:31:19 --> 00:31:21

as Muslims. I mean, no need to talk

00:31:21 --> 00:31:23

about and all that weird stuff.

00:31:24 --> 00:31:25

Allah is transcendent.

00:31:27 --> 00:31:29

But being with Allah means

00:31:29 --> 00:31:31

that if I'm all alone

00:31:31 --> 00:31:32

and I have the opportunity

00:31:33 --> 00:31:34

to do evil,

00:31:34 --> 00:31:36

I realize that I'm with Allah. I choose

00:31:36 --> 00:31:37

what's with Allah.

00:31:39 --> 00:31:41

I choose what's with Allah.

00:31:41 --> 00:31:43

Maybe I'm with some friends. Maybe I'm at

00:31:43 --> 00:31:46

work. Maybe I'm with some people, and there's

00:31:46 --> 00:31:48

no Muslims or nobody around me.

00:31:49 --> 00:31:50

And I remember

00:31:54 --> 00:31:55

Allah is with you wherever you are.

00:31:58 --> 00:31:59

Number 2, how do I

00:32:00 --> 00:32:02

live with the messenger of Allah?

00:32:03 --> 00:32:05

How do I live with the prophet

00:32:07 --> 00:32:08

is that I choose

00:32:09 --> 00:32:09

his sunnah,

00:32:11 --> 00:32:12

and I choose his teachings,

00:32:13 --> 00:32:15

and I follow the guidance

00:32:16 --> 00:32:17

of the prophet

00:32:17 --> 00:32:19

much love to the brothers on the inside,

00:32:19 --> 00:32:20

man. I used to go and actually teach

00:32:20 --> 00:32:21

brothers,

00:32:22 --> 00:32:23

in in in you know, who are part

00:32:23 --> 00:32:25

of the carceral state.

00:32:25 --> 00:32:26

And

00:32:26 --> 00:32:28

was I learned so much from them, man.

00:32:29 --> 00:32:30

You know, the brothers that were there on

00:32:30 --> 00:32:31

the inside,

00:32:31 --> 00:32:33

brother from just came out of prison recently

00:32:34 --> 00:32:35

saying, hamda, I used to benefit.

00:32:37 --> 00:32:39

So how do I believe with the messenger

00:32:39 --> 00:32:39

of Allah?

00:32:40 --> 00:32:42

Is I choose what the prophet taught me.

00:32:42 --> 00:32:44

How do I believe with the angels? I'm

00:32:44 --> 00:32:45

never alone.

00:32:46 --> 00:32:46

The angels

00:32:47 --> 00:32:47

are

00:32:48 --> 00:32:49

with

00:32:49 --> 00:32:50

me.

00:32:51 --> 00:32:52

And if you understand what I'm about to

00:32:52 --> 00:32:54

say, you understand what I'm teaching these people.

00:32:54 --> 00:32:55

We're learning the

00:32:56 --> 00:32:57

Now what we're learning is the.

00:32:58 --> 00:32:59

This is

00:33:00 --> 00:33:01

the.

00:33:01 --> 00:33:03

How do I how do I live a

00:33:03 --> 00:33:05

life to worship Allah as though I see

00:33:05 --> 00:33:06

him even though I don't see him, I

00:33:06 --> 00:33:09

know he sees me, is to frame my

00:33:09 --> 00:33:10

relationship of

00:33:10 --> 00:33:11

companionship.

00:33:12 --> 00:33:14

It's to frame my relationship with

00:33:15 --> 00:33:17

companionship. Here's a question I can give you

00:33:17 --> 00:33:18

an example. Someone said, can all my sins

00:33:18 --> 00:33:19

be forgiven?

00:33:20 --> 00:33:22

In my relationship with Allah, I know that

00:33:22 --> 00:33:23

Allah says whoever

00:33:23 --> 00:33:24

believes

00:33:24 --> 00:33:26

and repents to him

00:33:28 --> 00:33:29

in this relationship,

00:33:29 --> 00:33:32

unique relationship between you and Allah, Allah will

00:33:32 --> 00:33:34

forgive you. That's why we said yesterday,

00:33:34 --> 00:33:35

the majority

00:33:42 --> 00:33:44

of and others, they say that any believer

00:33:44 --> 00:33:47

who truly repents to Allah is forgiven.

00:33:48 --> 00:33:50

This is the strong majority opinion of Muslim,

00:33:51 --> 00:33:52

Sunni theologians in particular.

00:33:54 --> 00:33:56

How do I how do I live with

00:33:56 --> 00:33:57

the Quran?

00:33:57 --> 00:33:59

Is the Quran is my guide?

00:34:00 --> 00:34:02

I live my life according to Quranic teachings.

00:34:02 --> 00:34:05

I align my life with Quran. So now

00:34:05 --> 00:34:06

I'm with Quran.

00:34:06 --> 00:34:07

Now you can appreciate

00:34:08 --> 00:34:09

why Sayyidina Aisha

00:34:11 --> 00:34:13

said, what about Sayid Muhammad salallahu alaihi wa

00:34:13 --> 00:34:14

sallam?

00:34:18 --> 00:34:20

That the prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam was

00:34:20 --> 00:34:22

a walking Quran. Why? Because he lives

00:34:23 --> 00:34:25

with the Quran, embodying the Quran.

00:34:27 --> 00:34:30

That's why there were some Sahabi. It took

00:34:30 --> 00:34:32

them more than 50 to 40 years to

00:34:32 --> 00:34:33

finish the Quran.

00:34:33 --> 00:34:34

And in fact,

00:34:35 --> 00:34:36

Khatib al Baghdadi

00:34:37 --> 00:34:38

says about the Sahabi.

00:34:39 --> 00:34:41

He said that there was a Sahabi who

00:34:41 --> 00:34:42

finished the Quran.

00:34:42 --> 00:34:43

He lived in Iraq.

00:34:44 --> 00:34:46

And he was so happy he was euphoric.

00:34:46 --> 00:34:48

And people ask him, you finished the Quran,

00:34:48 --> 00:34:50

but that was so many decades ago.

00:34:51 --> 00:34:52

He said, no. No.

00:35:01 --> 00:35:03

You Allah. He said, no. No. I finished

00:35:04 --> 00:35:04

reading

00:35:05 --> 00:35:06

it decades ago,

00:35:06 --> 00:35:06

but

00:35:07 --> 00:35:08

today, I finished

00:35:08 --> 00:35:11

acting on every command and order

00:35:11 --> 00:35:12

in the Quran.

00:35:13 --> 00:35:15

We nowadays, we think about khatam of Quran

00:35:15 --> 00:35:17

just reciting it. The of

00:35:20 --> 00:35:20

Quran

00:35:21 --> 00:35:22

with their actions.

00:35:23 --> 00:35:23

Subhanallah.

00:35:25 --> 00:35:28

Why? Because with the Quran. With the akhira,

00:35:28 --> 00:35:29

what does it mean to have iman with

00:35:29 --> 00:35:31

the akhira? The choices I make, am I

00:35:31 --> 00:35:32

making a choice

00:35:33 --> 00:35:35

that is going to impact my in the

00:35:35 --> 00:35:37

right way or the wrong way? For example,

00:35:37 --> 00:35:37

injustice.

00:35:38 --> 00:35:39

The prophet

00:35:40 --> 00:35:42

said in a sound hadith related by Imam

00:35:42 --> 00:35:42

Abu Dawood,

00:35:44 --> 00:35:45

that there'll be a person who is so

00:35:45 --> 00:35:47

punished in the grave, he will actually

00:35:47 --> 00:35:49

he will actually grab

00:35:49 --> 00:35:51

the Malaika and say, why are you punishing

00:35:51 --> 00:35:53

me like this? And they will say, you

00:35:53 --> 00:35:54

passed

00:35:56 --> 00:35:59

You passed by oppression, and you didn't stop

00:35:59 --> 00:36:01

it. You didn't act on

00:36:01 --> 00:36:02

your witness

00:36:02 --> 00:36:04

of iman in the hereafter.

00:36:09 --> 00:36:11

That oppression will be oppression in the hereafter.

00:36:12 --> 00:36:13

So when I say I live with the

00:36:13 --> 00:36:15

hereafter, what kind of choices I make when

00:36:15 --> 00:36:17

I go out on Friday night? What kind

00:36:17 --> 00:36:18

of choices I make? When I go out

00:36:18 --> 00:36:20

on Saturday night, what kind of choices I

00:36:20 --> 00:36:21

make? When I'm hanging out with my friends,

00:36:21 --> 00:36:23

what kind of choices do I make? At

00:36:23 --> 00:36:25

work, when I'm doing business, what kind of

00:36:25 --> 00:36:27

choices do I make? Am I making choices

00:36:27 --> 00:36:29

that are aligned with success in the hereafter,

00:36:30 --> 00:36:31

or I'm making choices

00:36:32 --> 00:36:32

that

00:36:33 --> 00:36:35

align with someone that may suffer in the

00:36:35 --> 00:36:37

hereafter. That what it means to

00:36:42 --> 00:36:44

It's very important. That's why one of the

00:36:44 --> 00:36:48

great scholars said, whoever lives like who whoever

00:36:48 --> 00:36:50

will experience Jannah, live like a person of

00:36:50 --> 00:36:51

Jannah in dunya.

00:36:53 --> 00:36:55

And finally is with

00:36:55 --> 00:36:57

what Allah has decreed,

00:36:57 --> 00:36:59

the good and the bad, and we're going

00:36:59 --> 00:37:01

to talk about that next week.

00:37:01 --> 00:37:03

What do we talk about briefly today? We

00:37:03 --> 00:37:05

went over what we're going to talk about

00:37:05 --> 00:37:07

in 2 sessions tonight. We introduced the idea

00:37:07 --> 00:37:08

of a man,

00:37:09 --> 00:37:10

says in will

00:37:11 --> 00:37:12

full see your

00:37:21 --> 00:37:22

he says,

00:37:26 --> 00:37:26

you know, that

00:37:27 --> 00:37:29

is to have faith in your heart. That's

00:37:30 --> 00:37:31

Then we talked about

00:37:32 --> 00:37:35

our understanding of iman is not in, is

00:37:35 --> 00:37:35

with.

00:37:36 --> 00:37:39

To be with our faith, to make the

00:37:39 --> 00:37:39

right choices.

00:37:40 --> 00:37:42

Then we talked about the idea of and

00:37:42 --> 00:37:45

how that lays the foundation for activism and

00:37:45 --> 00:37:48

liberation theology and how we stay resilient

00:37:49 --> 00:37:50

with suffering.

00:37:51 --> 00:37:53

We don't surrender to the suffering. We surrender

00:37:53 --> 00:37:54

to Allah

00:37:55 --> 00:37:57

So I'll stop now. If you have any

00:37:57 --> 00:37:57

questions,

00:37:58 --> 00:37:59

lot of people

00:37:59 --> 00:38:00

here

00:38:01 --> 00:38:02

on TikTok as well

00:38:02 --> 00:38:04

as Instagram. If you have any questions about

00:38:04 --> 00:38:05

the topic,

00:38:06 --> 00:38:07

we'll be happy to take them. Can you

00:38:07 --> 00:38:08

make dua for our youth?

00:38:10 --> 00:38:12

Huda Khalifa, she just passed with

00:38:13 --> 00:38:16

We had an amazing sister, Huda Khalifa, who

00:38:16 --> 00:38:17

died of

00:38:18 --> 00:38:20

leukemia. Inshallah, she will be a according to

00:38:20 --> 00:38:21

the hadith of the prophet

00:38:22 --> 00:38:24

May Allah accept her and raise her status

00:38:24 --> 00:38:25

and forgive her.

00:38:31 --> 00:38:33

If a Muslim is afraid of an abuser

00:38:33 --> 00:38:33

with

00:38:34 --> 00:38:38

a dysregulated nerve dysregulated nervous system and suicidal,

00:38:38 --> 00:38:40

does it mean they are lacking faith? No.

00:38:40 --> 00:38:42

This is something that we'll talk about if

00:38:42 --> 00:38:45

we have time in our seminar over the

00:38:45 --> 00:38:46

winter retreat,

00:38:46 --> 00:38:48

and that is that mental health

00:38:49 --> 00:38:51

challenges and emotional health challenges

00:38:51 --> 00:38:53

have nothing to do with our iman.

00:38:54 --> 00:38:56

Those are tests from Allah

00:38:57 --> 00:38:58

just like people may have other type of

00:38:58 --> 00:39:00

physical challenges or tests.

00:39:01 --> 00:39:03

No one says to someone that has weak

00:39:03 --> 00:39:05

vision, they have weak vision, or they have

00:39:05 --> 00:39:07

problems in their vision, or they have problems

00:39:07 --> 00:39:08

focusing because they have weak.

00:39:09 --> 00:39:12

This is one of the gravest, most irresponsible

00:39:12 --> 00:39:14

things I've ever heard said to people.

00:39:15 --> 00:39:16

And also it actually

00:39:16 --> 00:39:17

inflames

00:39:18 --> 00:39:19

if they're having,

00:39:19 --> 00:39:20

you know,

00:39:22 --> 00:39:23

issues like compulsion,

00:39:23 --> 00:39:26

if they are struggling with issues like depression,

00:39:26 --> 00:39:27

to tell them that all of this is

00:39:27 --> 00:39:29

because they have weak iman just makes their

00:39:29 --> 00:39:30

iman more weak.

00:39:31 --> 00:39:34

So it's the opposite. The best dua, Imran,

00:39:34 --> 00:39:34

for,

00:39:36 --> 00:39:38

removing sicknesses, the dua of the prophet

00:39:39 --> 00:39:40

who used to say,

00:39:44 --> 00:39:45

We ask Allah

00:39:48 --> 00:39:49

to cure you.

00:39:50 --> 00:39:53

The the lord of the the transcendent lord

00:39:53 --> 00:39:55

of the arsh to cure you. And also

00:39:55 --> 00:39:56

the prophet used to say

00:39:57 --> 00:39:59

Right? Look how the prophet make dua for

00:39:59 --> 00:40:01

people say these duas are so simple for

00:40:01 --> 00:40:03

sick people. Yeah. Because sick people, maybe they're

00:40:03 --> 00:40:04

tired.

00:40:04 --> 00:40:06

You give them like a long dua to

00:40:06 --> 00:40:07

say it's hard for them.

00:40:08 --> 00:40:09

You

00:40:09 --> 00:40:11

you you you

00:40:11 --> 00:40:14

have to think about the mercy of Sayedid

00:40:14 --> 00:40:15

Muhammad. Exactly.

00:40:16 --> 00:40:18

Mental health is from trauma. Mental health is

00:40:18 --> 00:40:20

from a host of things, but not because

00:40:20 --> 00:40:22

of weak amen. And in fact, what happens

00:40:22 --> 00:40:24

when we do this,

00:40:24 --> 00:40:27

when we we tell people you are having

00:40:27 --> 00:40:29

these feelings and these thoughts and these ideations

00:40:30 --> 00:40:31

because your were

00:40:32 --> 00:40:34

actually giving the the subject of the trauma

00:40:34 --> 00:40:35

a green light.

00:40:36 --> 00:40:39

Whereas the person that has inflicted trauma in

00:40:39 --> 00:40:41

that way on a person should be held

00:40:41 --> 00:40:41

accountable.

00:40:42 --> 00:40:44

It's like breaking the law or, you know,

00:40:44 --> 00:40:46

something which is illegal. They should be held.

00:40:46 --> 00:40:48

But in that idea, with that way of

00:40:48 --> 00:40:49

thinking,

00:40:49 --> 00:40:51

you're you're giving the the the one who

00:40:51 --> 00:40:54

is the subject of the trauma a green

00:40:54 --> 00:40:56

light, and you're putting the blame

00:40:56 --> 00:40:58

on the object of the trauma. What the

00:40:58 --> 00:40:59

Zionist are doing now?

00:41:00 --> 00:41:03

With Palestinian brothers and sisters, they dehumanize them,

00:41:03 --> 00:41:05

and they degrade them to the point that

00:41:05 --> 00:41:07

they think that allows them to treat them

00:41:07 --> 00:41:07

as

00:41:08 --> 00:41:08

people

00:41:09 --> 00:41:10

that that they're not people.

00:41:12 --> 00:41:14

We'll talk about this, the idea of accountability

00:41:14 --> 00:41:16

in the future. I sometimes think that sin

00:41:16 --> 00:41:18

can be excused, and I struggle to think

00:41:18 --> 00:41:20

of anyone who truly deserves *.

00:41:20 --> 00:41:22

Yeah, Sam. This is a good question, and

00:41:22 --> 00:41:24

and we have to re I'll repeat it

00:41:24 --> 00:41:26

inshallah. Someone can also type it for her.

00:41:26 --> 00:41:27

The dua.

00:41:33 --> 00:41:35

You know, we ask Allah

00:41:35 --> 00:41:38

the Lord, the transcendent Lord to cure you.

00:41:39 --> 00:41:41

The other question someone's asking on TikTok is

00:41:42 --> 00:41:44

sometimes they have trouble believing how can people

00:41:44 --> 00:41:45

go to * forever.

00:41:45 --> 00:41:47

This is a very important

00:41:47 --> 00:41:48

question

00:41:49 --> 00:41:51

that touches even into the idea of,

00:41:52 --> 00:41:53

redemption

00:41:53 --> 00:41:55

within Islamic social justice

00:41:56 --> 00:41:57

or Islamic human justice

00:41:58 --> 00:41:59

movements.

00:41:59 --> 00:42:01

And that is that, of course, we believe

00:42:01 --> 00:42:02

redemption is open to everybody.

00:42:03 --> 00:42:05

But after somebody dies,

00:42:05 --> 00:42:05

Allah

00:42:06 --> 00:42:08

says they will not be judged in a

00:42:08 --> 00:42:09

good way or a bad way

00:42:10 --> 00:42:12

in a a they will not be wronged.

00:42:15 --> 00:42:18

Allah will not oppress or wrong anyone in

00:42:18 --> 00:42:18

the hereafter.

00:42:19 --> 00:42:21

So when they are judged, they are judged

00:42:21 --> 00:42:22

by absolute justice, and that's what it means

00:42:22 --> 00:42:23

to trust Allah.

00:42:24 --> 00:42:26

I trust Allah more than I trust my

00:42:26 --> 00:42:28

own. You know? How could this happen? I

00:42:28 --> 00:42:29

leave it to Allah.

00:42:29 --> 00:42:32

Next lecture, every every every Wednesday, hamdah, at,

00:42:32 --> 00:42:33

like, 10,

00:42:34 --> 00:42:35

11 PM EST

00:42:36 --> 00:42:38

If Robert, if you can DM me, unfortunately,

00:42:38 --> 00:42:40

it's good because there's a lot of questions

00:42:40 --> 00:42:40

and I'm

00:42:41 --> 00:42:43

struggling to keep up with you. But one

00:42:43 --> 00:42:45

thing, just some advice for you as someone

00:42:45 --> 00:42:47

who's seeking, be patient with people, man. People

00:42:47 --> 00:42:49

are teaching. There's a lot of questions.

00:42:49 --> 00:42:51

Right? Let's not make it sort of centered

00:42:52 --> 00:42:54

on just our moment. You're here with a

00:42:54 --> 00:42:56

lot of people, so be patient, bro. We

00:42:56 --> 00:42:57

will take care of you. We'll get to

00:42:57 --> 00:42:58

you inshallah.

00:42:58 --> 00:43:00

Thank you for writing it.

00:43:02 --> 00:43:04

And. If someone can write the English for

00:43:04 --> 00:43:05

her too, like the transliteration,

00:43:06 --> 00:43:08

that will be super amazing.

00:43:10 --> 00:43:12

I didn't see your question. We'll take a

00:43:12 --> 00:43:14

few more questions related to the actual subject.

00:43:14 --> 00:43:17

And if not, we do actually from time

00:43:17 --> 00:43:18

to time open questions as well.

00:43:19 --> 00:43:20

But what do we talk about today? The

00:43:20 --> 00:43:21

idea of faith.

00:43:25 --> 00:43:25

Right?

00:43:25 --> 00:43:27

That a man is understood to be an

00:43:27 --> 00:43:28

affirmation of the heart.

00:43:29 --> 00:43:31

And then we talked about what we believe

00:43:31 --> 00:43:33

in as Muslims. Then we talked about the

00:43:33 --> 00:43:35

idea of belief with not belief in.

00:43:35 --> 00:43:38

And then we talked briefly about a framework

00:43:38 --> 00:43:40

that we're going to address and unpack next

00:43:40 --> 00:43:42

week for dealing with existential crisis, injustice,

00:43:44 --> 00:43:46

sin, problems of the world, evil, pain, sickness,

00:43:46 --> 00:43:49

and suffering, all that we'll tackle next week.

00:43:49 --> 00:43:50

And then a few weeks after that, we

00:43:50 --> 00:43:52

have our winter retreat at my school, which

00:43:52 --> 00:43:53

will be free to everybody,

00:43:54 --> 00:43:56

and we will give also even the text

00:43:56 --> 00:43:57

out that people can use

00:44:00 --> 00:44:02

your son is 13. He wants to join

00:44:02 --> 00:44:04

my classes online. The classes are gonna start

00:44:04 --> 00:44:06

the week of January 16th,

00:44:07 --> 00:44:09

for youth. If he goes to,

00:44:09 --> 00:44:11

join, if he goes to suhayebweb.com,

00:44:12 --> 00:44:13

he can join there.

00:44:13 --> 00:44:14

Suhayebweb.com.

00:44:14 --> 00:44:17

And that's for your whole family. So $9.99

00:44:17 --> 00:44:18

a month for the whole family.

00:44:20 --> 00:44:21

Sarah, I'm sorry. I keep seeing you, but

00:44:21 --> 00:44:22

I'm not seeing,

00:44:22 --> 00:44:25

your question. So my my apology.

00:44:26 --> 00:44:28

Dua for mental health is a beautiful dua

00:44:28 --> 00:44:29

of the prophet

00:44:31 --> 00:44:31

who said,

00:44:35 --> 00:44:37

Oh, Allah, I seek refuge in you from

00:44:37 --> 00:44:38

anxiety and stress.

00:44:45 --> 00:44:47

Oh Allah, seek refuge in you from things

00:44:47 --> 00:44:49

that bother me about the past.

00:44:50 --> 00:44:52

And things that worry me about the future.

00:44:52 --> 00:44:54

It's It's like such a beautiful dua. And

00:44:54 --> 00:44:55

saying the

00:44:55 --> 00:44:56

he said the prophet

00:44:57 --> 00:45:00

would say this dua whenever he felt nervous

00:45:00 --> 00:45:02

or some anxiety or any stress.

00:45:02 --> 00:45:04

It's no problem, Carla. You don't have to

00:45:04 --> 00:45:05

know Arabic. It's all good.

00:45:06 --> 00:45:08

Don't worry. We're all here for you.

00:45:08 --> 00:45:10

Welcome. I feel feel

00:45:10 --> 00:45:12

very comfortable in part part of the community

00:45:12 --> 00:45:14

here, and everyone's very happy. I'm sure to

00:45:14 --> 00:45:15

see her.

00:45:16 --> 00:45:17

And we end,

00:45:18 --> 00:45:20

when Drexel advised me, you know, the yearly

00:45:20 --> 00:45:20

Drexel

00:45:21 --> 00:45:23

the yearly Drexel invite. Right? We have to

00:45:23 --> 00:45:24

make it happen.

00:45:26 --> 00:45:26

May

00:45:27 --> 00:45:29

Allah increase you and bless you,

00:45:30 --> 00:45:31

and we will see all of you next

00:45:31 --> 00:45:33

week. And we do have, like, a open

00:45:33 --> 00:45:35

q and a usually on Sunday evening, so

00:45:35 --> 00:45:36

we'll try to see all of you there

00:45:36 --> 00:45:38

and get to your questions. Robert, again, reach

00:45:38 --> 00:45:39

out to me. I'm a take care of

00:45:39 --> 00:45:40

you,

00:45:40 --> 00:45:42

We end by making a special dua for

00:45:42 --> 00:45:45

all the Muslims, especially this young generation of

00:45:45 --> 00:45:46

generation z,

00:45:46 --> 00:45:48

holding it down, you know, unapologetically

00:45:49 --> 00:45:51

out there demanding justice.

00:45:51 --> 00:45:53

We ask Allah to bless you, to increase

00:45:53 --> 00:45:55

you, we're very proud of you, proud of

00:45:55 --> 00:45:55

your parents.

00:45:57 --> 00:46:00

We pray also that Allah

00:46:00 --> 00:46:02

will alleviate the suffering of the people in

00:46:02 --> 00:46:02

Palestine.

00:46:03 --> 00:46:05

And we pray that Allah will wake the

00:46:05 --> 00:46:08

ummah up and humanity up. There is a

00:46:08 --> 00:46:11

genocide happening. There is a a a live

00:46:11 --> 00:46:12

slaughter happening

00:46:12 --> 00:46:14

that we're watching, and

00:46:15 --> 00:46:16

the world is

00:46:16 --> 00:46:20

is is in ignoring Palestine, ignoring Sudan, ignoring

00:46:20 --> 00:46:21

the laborers,

00:46:22 --> 00:46:22

ignoring

00:46:24 --> 00:46:25

you you can think of,

00:46:26 --> 00:46:28

unfortunately, too many people to list

00:46:28 --> 00:46:30

who are being ignored by a world

00:46:31 --> 00:46:34

that tends not to encourage people towards kindness.

00:46:45 --> 00:46:45

We ask Allah

00:46:46 --> 00:46:47

to alleviate

00:46:48 --> 00:46:50

the challenges and pain and suffering of people

00:46:50 --> 00:46:51

in Palestine. We ask Allah to bless those

00:46:51 --> 00:46:52

who died to accept

00:46:53 --> 00:46:55

to unite them with their children under the

00:46:55 --> 00:46:58

babysitting of saying that Ibrahim alaihi salatu salam.

00:46:58 --> 00:47:00

We pray for our brothers and sisters in

00:47:00 --> 00:47:02

India. Pay attention to what is going on

00:47:02 --> 00:47:03

in India legally in Kashmir

00:47:04 --> 00:47:07

under the Modi regime. Ask Allah to make

00:47:07 --> 00:47:08

us from those who obey him. We ask

00:47:08 --> 00:47:10

Allah to allow us to use this moment

00:47:10 --> 00:47:12

as a means to come back to him.

00:47:12 --> 00:47:13

We ask Allah to accept us and to

00:47:13 --> 00:47:14

forgive us.

00:47:17 --> 00:47:18

We ask Allah to take us by our

00:47:18 --> 00:47:20

hands and guide us and keep us on

00:47:20 --> 00:47:20
