How's everybody doing?

00:00:10 --> 00:00:12

Sorry about asking people to part the Red

00:00:12 --> 00:00:13

Sea there.

00:00:13 --> 00:00:14

My apologies.

00:00:15 --> 00:00:17

I wanna welcome everyone to the IC,

00:00:19 --> 00:00:20

and we hope

00:00:20 --> 00:00:21

that you will,

00:00:21 --> 00:00:22

you know, enjoy

00:00:23 --> 00:00:24

your time

00:00:24 --> 00:00:25

in

00:00:25 --> 00:00:26

in the space

00:00:27 --> 00:00:29

and we're super happy to have everybody.

00:00:30 --> 00:00:31

It's strange whenever you advertise,

00:00:32 --> 00:00:33

you know, religious programming,

00:00:34 --> 00:00:36

it's really important that we ask ourselves what

00:00:36 --> 00:00:37

kind of community have we created

00:00:38 --> 00:00:40

when even Muslims are asking like, can I

00:00:40 --> 00:00:40

come?

00:00:41 --> 00:00:42

Like, is it okay if I come?

00:00:44 --> 00:00:45

And that's really a disaster.

00:00:45 --> 00:00:46

Let alone

00:00:47 --> 00:00:49

people who may be seeking and aren't Muslim,

00:00:49 --> 00:00:51

but just like the fact that the faithful,

00:00:51 --> 00:00:52

right, feel

00:00:53 --> 00:00:54

immediately intimidated.

00:00:55 --> 00:00:57

So one of the things that the IC

00:00:57 --> 00:00:59

is invested in is creating a community

00:00:59 --> 00:01:00

where people feel comfortable.

00:01:01 --> 00:01:03

That's duality. It's a dual responsibility there.

00:01:04 --> 00:01:06

But doing our best to make people feel,

00:01:06 --> 00:01:07

like, valued.

00:01:08 --> 00:01:10

So we we hope that you enjoy, you

00:01:10 --> 00:01:12

know, your visits to the IC inshallah and

00:01:12 --> 00:01:14

that that we can

00:01:15 --> 00:01:18

serve you diligently. So, Imam Khaled asked me

00:01:18 --> 00:01:19

about

00:01:19 --> 00:01:21

starting the halaqas again on Tuesdays

00:01:22 --> 00:01:24

and he asked me what I thought

00:01:25 --> 00:01:27

was, like, important. And I felt like coming

00:01:27 --> 00:01:28

out of Ramadan

00:01:28 --> 00:01:30

because I'm sure

00:01:30 --> 00:01:32

a lot of us habituated supplication.

00:01:33 --> 00:01:35

You know? Like Ramadan coming out of finals

00:01:35 --> 00:01:38

for students. Right? I just had baby girl,

00:01:38 --> 00:01:40

first 5 days of her life, she was

00:01:40 --> 00:01:43

in ICU, so like I habituated supplication,

00:01:43 --> 00:01:45

you know, because you become

00:01:45 --> 00:01:47

one of my teachers used to say that

00:01:47 --> 00:01:48

2 or 3 places

00:01:49 --> 00:01:51

every Muslim becomes a Wali.

00:01:51 --> 00:01:52

One is in the ICU.

00:01:53 --> 00:01:55

Like the dua that you make

00:01:55 --> 00:01:57

if you're seeing someone suffering or

00:01:58 --> 00:02:01

you yourself are suffering, it's like super sincere,

00:02:01 --> 00:02:02

you

00:02:02 --> 00:02:04

know. And then the second is Hajj.

00:02:05 --> 00:02:07

People go to Hajj like they have the

00:02:07 --> 00:02:09

sense. And then of course, like before marriage,

00:02:10 --> 00:02:12

when somebody's like trying to get married or

00:02:12 --> 00:02:13

they're seeking a spouse,

00:02:14 --> 00:02:16

they tend to like be super sincere, you

00:02:16 --> 00:02:17

know, in what they ask

00:02:18 --> 00:02:20

for. So we ask Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala

00:02:20 --> 00:02:22

to, inshallah, help us. This this series, there's

00:02:22 --> 00:02:24

a schedule out for it over what supplications

00:02:24 --> 00:02:26

we're gonna be covering every week.

00:02:27 --> 00:02:29

So that should have been sent out in

00:02:29 --> 00:02:31

the email. And then tomorrow,

00:02:31 --> 00:02:33

we'll send you a PDF of the supplication

00:02:34 --> 00:02:36

that we covered today, along with the transliteration

00:02:37 --> 00:02:39

and some of the notes so that, you

00:02:39 --> 00:02:40

know, it would be helpful,

00:02:41 --> 00:02:42

and beneficial to everybody.

00:02:43 --> 00:02:45

Before before I start,

00:02:46 --> 00:02:48

I just wanna ask you, like, a very

00:02:48 --> 00:02:51

important question because it's it's it's extremely important

00:02:51 --> 00:02:53

that we delve into the collective imagination of

00:02:53 --> 00:02:54

the Muslim community.

00:02:55 --> 00:02:56

I don't know if anybody follows me on

00:02:56 --> 00:02:57

Instagram,

00:02:57 --> 00:02:58

but,

00:02:59 --> 00:02:59

you know,

00:03:00 --> 00:03:02

someone. You know, if I find someone in

00:03:02 --> 00:03:02

the street,

00:03:03 --> 00:03:05

I'm going to beat someone up. Right? Because

00:03:05 --> 00:03:07

every day I get 5 or 6 questions.

00:03:07 --> 00:03:08

Well, someone told me this

00:03:09 --> 00:03:11

and someone told me that. Right? I'm like,

00:03:11 --> 00:03:12

who the heck is someone?

00:03:13 --> 00:03:14

This person has a lot of followers on

00:03:14 --> 00:03:17

This is a big influencer. Someone is a

00:03:17 --> 00:03:18

really successful influencer.

00:03:19 --> 00:03:20

And unfortunately, someone

00:03:20 --> 00:03:23

tends to give like the worst religious advice,

00:03:23 --> 00:03:24

like successfully

00:03:25 --> 00:03:25

wrong.

00:03:26 --> 00:03:26

You know?

00:03:27 --> 00:03:27

And

00:03:28 --> 00:03:30

when you go into that and you begin

00:03:30 --> 00:03:32

to unpack that, you get a glimpse into

00:03:32 --> 00:03:34

the collective imagination of the Muslim community

00:03:35 --> 00:03:36

that oftentimes

00:03:36 --> 00:03:38

frames things in ways which are like

00:03:39 --> 00:03:40

irrationally pious

00:03:41 --> 00:03:42

or irresponsibly

00:03:43 --> 00:03:43

liberal.

00:03:44 --> 00:03:46

It's very rarely that you find it in

00:03:46 --> 00:03:47

the middle.

00:03:48 --> 00:03:51

So yesterday, the girl was like, you know,

00:03:51 --> 00:03:53

someone told me like my hair fell out

00:03:53 --> 00:03:56

of my hijab, so I'm committing zina. Absolutely.

00:03:56 --> 00:03:57

I was like, man, like,

00:03:58 --> 00:03:59

who the heck is someone?

00:04:00 --> 00:04:02

You know, like and how could you say

00:04:02 --> 00:04:04

it to somebody? There's a brother, he told

00:04:04 --> 00:04:05

me I didn't post this one. He was

00:04:05 --> 00:04:07

like, someone told me I was wearing a

00:04:07 --> 00:04:08

maw Saleh

00:04:08 --> 00:04:08

jersey

00:04:09 --> 00:04:10

in a mosque, and they told me I

00:04:10 --> 00:04:12

had to leave. Someone.

00:04:12 --> 00:04:14

Right? Who the heck is someone?

00:04:15 --> 00:04:17

But for some reason, someone

00:04:17 --> 00:04:19

has a big impact on us.

00:04:20 --> 00:04:22

So before we jump into du'a,

00:04:23 --> 00:04:24

supplication,

00:04:25 --> 00:04:26

what do you

00:04:27 --> 00:04:29

imagine to be the perfect moment

00:04:30 --> 00:04:31

for Dua?

00:04:34 --> 00:04:35

That's a question

00:04:35 --> 00:04:37

that I want us to like spend a

00:04:37 --> 00:04:38

few moments just sharing.

00:04:39 --> 00:04:40

Right? Like,

00:04:41 --> 00:04:43

what is that perfect setting?

00:04:44 --> 00:04:46

You know, if you were able to, like,

00:04:46 --> 00:04:47

set up dua,

00:04:48 --> 00:04:51

what would the perfect dua look like?

00:04:52 --> 00:04:53

And what situation

00:04:53 --> 00:04:55

would you be in?

00:04:56 --> 00:04:58

That's the question. So I might say,

00:04:59 --> 00:05:00

last 3rd of the night,

00:05:01 --> 00:05:02

everyone's asleep,

00:05:03 --> 00:05:04

I made tahajjud,

00:05:05 --> 00:05:07

and then my eyes are like full of

00:05:07 --> 00:05:08

tears,

00:05:08 --> 00:05:10

and I'm just like pouring my heart open

00:05:10 --> 00:05:11

to God.

00:05:12 --> 00:05:14

Like that might be the ideal situation in

00:05:14 --> 00:05:16

my mind. So that's the question I'm asking

00:05:16 --> 00:05:18

you. Like, when you hear the word dua

00:05:18 --> 00:05:20

and you think of ideal dua,

00:05:21 --> 00:05:22

what do you think of?

00:05:24 --> 00:05:25

That's my question.

00:05:28 --> 00:05:31

In your mind, successful dua was the first

00:05:31 --> 00:05:33

thing you see that you're doing or where

00:05:33 --> 00:05:34

you are.

00:05:37 --> 00:05:38

Yes, ma'am?

00:05:44 --> 00:05:47

Right? That's beautiful. Having this with

00:05:47 --> 00:05:47

Allah.

00:05:48 --> 00:05:50

Right? Speaking to God. Yes, ma'am.

00:06:00 --> 00:06:02

Mhmm. Being able to, like, lock in.

00:06:02 --> 00:06:05

Right. Right. Got it. Yes, ma'am. I tried

00:06:05 --> 00:06:05

to,

00:06:06 --> 00:06:08

especially when it rains.

00:06:08 --> 00:06:10

I thought, oh, no. I'll be connected to,

00:06:11 --> 00:06:13

you know or if I guess in a

00:06:13 --> 00:06:15

similar way, I feel that lawless is wrong.

00:06:15 --> 00:06:17

I don't know. I just I just have

00:06:17 --> 00:06:19

to do it then. Okay. All the time,

00:06:19 --> 00:06:22

but especially then. Beautiful. So like rain? Yeah.

00:06:23 --> 00:06:25

Yes, sir? Like, the best time

00:06:25 --> 00:06:27

if you try to add up all the

00:06:27 --> 00:06:29

different blessing plus at times. It's like, Lila

00:06:29 --> 00:06:32

and mother. No, but I mean you, your

00:06:32 --> 00:06:34

reflection. Yeah. Don't bring Sunday school into this

00:06:34 --> 00:06:36

yet because that's a cop out.

00:06:37 --> 00:06:38

I mean, you personally.

00:06:39 --> 00:06:40

Right.

00:06:40 --> 00:06:43

I think it's either when you've done something

00:06:43 --> 00:06:45

really difficult for the sake of the Allah

00:06:45 --> 00:06:47

Okay. Or right after that. Nice. They're in,

00:06:47 --> 00:06:50

like, a really bad state, even though you

00:06:50 --> 00:06:52

can only rely on Allah. Nice.

00:06:53 --> 00:06:53

And now.

00:06:55 --> 00:06:58

Got it. Yeah. Awesome. Yes, sir. I love,

00:06:59 --> 00:07:00

Duhammus.

00:07:00 --> 00:07:03

No. But I need you. Yeah. That's the

00:07:03 --> 00:07:06

one I use. Yeah. But your personal what

00:07:06 --> 00:07:08

you're going through, don't project to Musa. Be

00:07:08 --> 00:07:08

you.

00:07:09 --> 00:07:09

Well, it's like

00:07:10 --> 00:07:11

the Dua

00:07:13 --> 00:07:15

is. Right. So that's like.

00:07:17 --> 00:07:18

So it's like

00:07:18 --> 00:07:19

this anxiety

00:07:20 --> 00:07:21

or this pressure

00:07:21 --> 00:07:22

to

00:07:23 --> 00:07:25

live in this world and just try to,

00:07:25 --> 00:07:26

like,

00:07:27 --> 00:07:28

ease that.

00:07:28 --> 00:07:31

It's something that I I constantly have to

00:07:31 --> 00:07:33

talk about. Nice. Nice. And feel free to

00:07:33 --> 00:07:34

push back. Don't worry. I'm trying to push

00:07:34 --> 00:07:37

you guys into being who you are. We

00:07:37 --> 00:07:38

tend to project

00:07:38 --> 00:07:40

and not talk about, like, where we are

00:07:40 --> 00:07:41

or what we're going through. So I'm I'm

00:07:41 --> 00:07:43

not trying to give you a hard time.

00:07:43 --> 00:07:45

So the the supplication of prophet Musa

00:07:46 --> 00:07:49

and Surat Taha, oh Allah, expand my chest,

00:07:49 --> 00:07:51

remove the impediment from my speech.

00:07:52 --> 00:07:54

Right? Assist me with my brother.

00:07:55 --> 00:07:58

Right. Beautiful. Beautiful. Who else? Yes, sir. I

00:07:58 --> 00:08:01

think, we tend to forget whenever we are

00:08:01 --> 00:08:03

satisfied or happy in life, we tend to

00:08:03 --> 00:08:05

forget to there are a lot of times

00:08:05 --> 00:08:08

you said, but I think that's the point

00:08:09 --> 00:08:10

where you are

00:08:10 --> 00:08:14

most content and satisfied with with life. So

00:08:14 --> 00:08:16

I think you should take a moment when

00:08:16 --> 00:08:18

you sincerely sit down and just do like

00:08:18 --> 00:08:18

our

00:08:20 --> 00:08:20

Mhmm.

00:08:21 --> 00:08:23

Grabbing that moment of sincerity. Yeah. When when

00:08:23 --> 00:08:27

you're just super satisfied, not concerned about anything,

00:08:27 --> 00:08:28

just happy.

00:08:28 --> 00:08:30

Yeah. I mean, there's this narration. Right? Remember

00:08:30 --> 00:08:32

me in ease and I'll remember you in

00:08:32 --> 00:08:32

hardship.

00:08:33 --> 00:08:34

Right? Beautiful.

00:08:35 --> 00:08:37

Excellent. And they say, like, the gratitude

00:08:37 --> 00:08:39

of the common person is,

00:08:40 --> 00:08:42

you know, like the sabra of the common

00:08:42 --> 00:08:44

person or the or the thankfulness of the

00:08:44 --> 00:08:45

common person is after

00:08:55 --> 00:08:58

When you are feeling anxiety, when nothing around

00:08:58 --> 00:08:59

you, no world,

00:08:59 --> 00:09:01

things giving you ease or comfort. Mhmm. And

00:09:01 --> 00:09:03

you're like, I can't talk to anybody except

00:09:03 --> 00:09:05

the law, and I need them right now.

00:09:05 --> 00:09:08

Like, nothing else is breaking up. So Yeah.

00:09:08 --> 00:09:10

And, you know, it's interesting how answers can

00:09:10 --> 00:09:12

be like complete polar opposites, and we're all

00:09:12 --> 00:09:15

like, yep. Mhmm. Because dua is muhl ibadah.

00:09:16 --> 00:09:17

Right? What we're learning now is the statement

00:09:17 --> 00:09:20

of the prophet like, supplication is the marrow

00:09:20 --> 00:09:20

of worship.

00:09:21 --> 00:09:23

It's with you in every situation. Right? There

00:09:23 --> 00:09:25

will always be the ability to contextualize it.

00:09:26 --> 00:09:26

Exactly.

00:09:27 --> 00:09:29

Anyone else? Yes, ma'am.

00:09:39 --> 00:09:40

What does that mean? Wow.

00:09:41 --> 00:09:43

I don't know. You don't know if you're

00:09:43 --> 00:09:45

gonna get to the next. That's when you

00:09:45 --> 00:09:45

kinda say it.

00:09:47 --> 00:09:49

Yeah. That's that's a it's like the middle

00:09:49 --> 00:09:51

of the day. Because I see your feet

00:09:51 --> 00:09:53

that time, you're making it in that day.

00:09:54 --> 00:09:56

That's beautiful, man. So like, you don't know

00:09:56 --> 00:09:58

if you're gonna make it to the end,

00:09:58 --> 00:10:01

so you get more It's nice. Yes, ma'am.

00:10:03 --> 00:10:05

When I'm trying to do something? Yeah. When

00:10:05 --> 00:10:07

you when you really wanna pull something off,

00:10:08 --> 00:10:10

yeah, that tends to like be that, like

00:10:10 --> 00:10:11

that pre workout

00:10:12 --> 00:10:14

that you could take to kinda get you

00:10:14 --> 00:10:16

in a good place. That's beautiful.

00:10:16 --> 00:10:17

Yes, sir.

00:10:39 --> 00:10:41

That's beautiful. That's beautiful. Yes, sir.

00:11:02 --> 00:11:04

Right. And I think it's important to understand

00:11:04 --> 00:11:05

what I'm trying to frame now. I'm trying

00:11:05 --> 00:11:07

to keep us away from texts.

00:11:08 --> 00:11:11

Right? In sejood, laila toqadr. That's private theology.

00:11:12 --> 00:11:13

But I would argue that some of us

00:11:13 --> 00:11:16

have made the most sincere duas when we

00:11:16 --> 00:11:17

experience public theology,

00:11:18 --> 00:11:20

like when we wanna do something important.

00:11:20 --> 00:11:22

Like at the ICU when your daughter is

00:11:22 --> 00:11:24

like, they told me her oxygen levels are

00:11:24 --> 00:11:27

dropping. We don't know why. She's perfectly healthy.

00:11:28 --> 00:11:29

That moment, I'm like, the only one that

00:11:29 --> 00:11:30

can raise oxygen

00:11:32 --> 00:11:33

is Allah.

00:11:33 --> 00:11:35

Right? So my my challenge what I'm trying

00:11:35 --> 00:11:37

to challenge you to think about is public

00:11:37 --> 00:11:40

moments. Right? Those are important. Like for example,

00:11:42 --> 00:11:45

in aspects of salah. So what I'm talking

00:11:45 --> 00:11:47

about now is the nitty gritty l train

00:11:49 --> 00:11:51

at the game, last night, is Kawhi gonna

00:11:51 --> 00:11:52

do it?

00:11:52 --> 00:11:53

Right? Those moments

00:11:54 --> 00:11:55

where

00:11:55 --> 00:11:57

you have to kind of float on your

00:11:57 --> 00:11:58

own.

00:12:00 --> 00:12:02

So I would say the most important du

00:12:02 --> 00:12:04

I I ever made was in a nightclub

00:12:06 --> 00:12:06

in a bathroom,

00:12:07 --> 00:12:08

DJing

00:12:08 --> 00:12:09

at 18 years old.

00:12:10 --> 00:12:11

And I was DJing for a guy who

00:12:11 --> 00:12:12

was Muslim,

00:12:13 --> 00:12:14

and he was like, yo man, you need

00:12:14 --> 00:12:16

to get your life together. Like, we're both

00:12:16 --> 00:12:17

in the club bro. Like,

00:12:18 --> 00:12:20

whose life's not together here? He's like, did

00:12:20 --> 00:12:22

you read the Quran I gave you?

00:12:22 --> 00:12:24

Right? And then in the restroom,

00:12:24 --> 00:12:27

if you're a Buddha, if you're Jehovah, if

00:12:27 --> 00:12:28

you're Allah, if you're Jesus,

00:12:29 --> 00:12:30

whoever you are,

00:12:31 --> 00:12:32

I need a way out of this.

00:12:33 --> 00:12:35

So the point I'm I'm trying to make

00:12:35 --> 00:12:36

here is

00:12:37 --> 00:12:37

those public

00:12:39 --> 00:12:39

uncurated,

00:12:40 --> 00:12:41

unfiltered moments of dua.

00:12:43 --> 00:12:45

And if you think about it,

00:12:45 --> 00:12:48

the Quran really captures those moments.

00:12:48 --> 00:12:49

Like

00:12:49 --> 00:12:50

Moses,

00:12:50 --> 00:12:53

Sayidina Musa is experiencing rejection.

00:12:54 --> 00:12:56

So he's it's not like he was in

00:12:56 --> 00:12:58

the mosque at 3 AM

00:12:58 --> 00:13:00

and he was in full Tahara and he

00:13:00 --> 00:13:02

had his Somali rose, Eteran

00:13:02 --> 00:13:03

and he was wearing a kurta.

00:13:05 --> 00:13:06

Musa just got rejected.

00:13:07 --> 00:13:09

He just ran from his people.

00:13:09 --> 00:13:11

So he has nothing to turn to but

00:13:11 --> 00:13:14

God. Adam and his wife, when did they

00:13:14 --> 00:13:14

make the supplication?

00:13:16 --> 00:13:17

After they fell,

00:13:18 --> 00:13:19

not before.

00:13:19 --> 00:13:20

Saydna Ibrahim

00:13:21 --> 00:13:22

is in the fire.

00:13:22 --> 00:13:25

So I find it ironic that sometimes, and

00:13:25 --> 00:13:27

you guys, hamdulillah, are are a little bit

00:13:27 --> 00:13:28

more realer. This is a New York crowd,

00:13:28 --> 00:13:29

so it's

00:13:30 --> 00:13:31

kind of a little different grit.

00:13:33 --> 00:13:35

But people tend to talk about duas being

00:13:35 --> 00:13:37

like I just prayed 2 rakah and I

00:13:37 --> 00:13:39

made like all the of the wudu

00:13:40 --> 00:13:42

and like everything was going great and I

00:13:42 --> 00:13:44

was fasting and it was the time of

00:13:44 --> 00:13:44

Adan

00:13:45 --> 00:13:46

and I made dua.

00:13:47 --> 00:13:47

Was

00:13:48 --> 00:13:49

the Quran

00:13:49 --> 00:13:52

captures dua of the prophets in the most

00:13:52 --> 00:13:53

hectic,

00:13:53 --> 00:13:56

difficult, or most successful moments

00:13:56 --> 00:13:57

that are uncurated.

00:13:58 --> 00:13:59

They're not filtered.

00:13:59 --> 00:14:02

They're very real. Like Mariam, I never had

00:14:02 --> 00:14:03

a boyfriend dude.

00:14:04 --> 00:14:05

And then she turns to Allah.

00:14:06 --> 00:14:09

You look at Sayna Muhammad, Allahumma falaqaummi falaamalayal,

00:14:10 --> 00:14:11

Allah forgive my people, they don't know what

00:14:11 --> 00:14:14

they're doing to me. It's not a curated

00:14:14 --> 00:14:15

moment. So I think one of the things

00:14:15 --> 00:14:18

like we can appreciate before we talk about

00:14:18 --> 00:14:19

dua

00:14:19 --> 00:14:22

is that often times outside of the textual

00:14:23 --> 00:14:25

encouragements, so don't don't get me wrong,

00:14:26 --> 00:14:28

but we tend to find our sincerity in

00:14:28 --> 00:14:31

the most uncurated moments because when it's uncurated,

00:14:31 --> 00:14:33

we don't feel we have control.

00:14:34 --> 00:14:37

Whether it's success or failure. So what's the

00:14:37 --> 00:14:39

first thing that people in Jannah will say

00:14:39 --> 00:14:43

In * A'raf, when they realize like, you're

00:14:43 --> 00:14:45

now here. You made it They

00:14:46 --> 00:14:46

make dua

00:14:47 --> 00:14:50

because it's uncurated. It's beyond their control.

00:14:51 --> 00:14:53

So we're gonna talk about dua but one

00:14:53 --> 00:14:54

of the things I want us to think

00:14:54 --> 00:14:55

about is

00:14:56 --> 00:14:59

those moments where we've experienced, like, sincerity or

00:14:59 --> 00:15:00

we've seen our dua accepted

00:15:01 --> 00:15:04

or we've been in those places where it's

00:15:04 --> 00:15:05

not easy to manage.

00:15:07 --> 00:15:07

Uncomfortable.

00:15:08 --> 00:15:09

Public theology

00:15:10 --> 00:15:13

brings about a sense of verse adversity.

00:15:14 --> 00:15:16

And moments of real tend to come either

00:15:16 --> 00:15:17

through great moments of success

00:15:18 --> 00:15:20

or what we may see as initially,

00:15:21 --> 00:15:22

as failure.

00:15:23 --> 00:15:25

So before we we jump into it,

00:15:25 --> 00:15:28

let's appreciate then the statement, as I mentioned

00:15:28 --> 00:15:29

earlier,

00:15:29 --> 00:15:31

of the prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam

00:15:32 --> 00:15:34

who he said, you know,

00:15:36 --> 00:15:39

Like the marrow of worship. The guts of

00:15:39 --> 00:15:40

worship is dua.

00:15:41 --> 00:15:43

You know, a good way to explain it

00:15:43 --> 00:15:44

would be like your core if you work

00:15:44 --> 00:15:45

out.

00:15:45 --> 00:15:47

Your core, one of the core components of

00:15:47 --> 00:15:48

worship

00:15:48 --> 00:15:49

is dua.

00:15:52 --> 00:15:53

And that takes us to

00:15:55 --> 00:15:56

a very important

00:15:57 --> 00:15:59

statement of Imam al Qazari

00:16:00 --> 00:16:01

in his Ihya,

00:16:02 --> 00:16:04

where he talks about, like, the etiquettes of

00:16:04 --> 00:16:05

dua.

00:16:07 --> 00:16:09

I tend to be concerned when people say,

00:16:09 --> 00:16:11

like, if you do this, do your do,

00:16:11 --> 00:16:12

I won't be accepted. Like how do you

00:16:12 --> 00:16:13

know that?

00:16:14 --> 00:16:16

Like what if the person has a pentent

00:16:16 --> 00:16:17

heart? Like what if the person

00:16:18 --> 00:16:19

internally is with God?

00:16:20 --> 00:16:21

You know, they just made a mistake.

00:16:22 --> 00:16:24

Like we can't become modernists. Like we're not

00:16:24 --> 00:16:24

engineers.

00:16:26 --> 00:16:28

So when we talk about these etiquettes,

00:16:29 --> 00:16:31

as he mentions in the beginning of his

00:16:31 --> 00:16:34

text like, don't take it to an extreme.

00:16:34 --> 00:16:34

Right?

00:16:35 --> 00:16:36

Take it to a balance.

00:16:38 --> 00:16:39

The first he said,

00:16:40 --> 00:16:41

is

00:16:41 --> 00:16:44

very beautiful. He said that, you know, try

00:16:44 --> 00:16:45

to find

00:16:45 --> 00:16:47

those times which are beneficial

00:16:47 --> 00:16:49

as recognized by sacred texts.

00:16:52 --> 00:16:53

Man, I remember subhanAllah.

00:16:53 --> 00:16:55

Allah is so merciful.

00:16:56 --> 00:16:58

My my my first Ramadan as an apprentice

00:16:58 --> 00:17:00

imam. I was a 28 years old. SubhanAllah.

00:17:01 --> 00:17:02

That was a while back.

00:17:03 --> 00:17:05

And, it was my first Ramadan.

00:17:05 --> 00:17:06

You know, being

00:17:07 --> 00:17:09

an imam or assistant imam in a masjid

00:17:09 --> 00:17:10

in Ramadan

00:17:11 --> 00:17:12

is really like being like

00:17:13 --> 00:17:15

an emcee at a party or something. Like

00:17:15 --> 00:17:16

I don't know how to explain it. Like

00:17:16 --> 00:17:18

you're you're working. Like you you don't have

00:17:18 --> 00:17:20

any opportunity to stop.

00:17:21 --> 00:17:21

So

00:17:22 --> 00:17:24

this brother, this is before like cell phones

00:17:24 --> 00:17:26

were popping. This is when we're still playing

00:17:26 --> 00:17:28

Snake. You know, remember Snake on the cell

00:17:28 --> 00:17:30

phone? Some of you are like, what's snake?

00:17:30 --> 00:17:31

But

00:17:31 --> 00:17:34

he calls the masjid and he's like,

00:17:34 --> 00:17:36

I need to come to the masjid right

00:17:36 --> 00:17:36

now.

00:17:37 --> 00:17:38

So,

00:17:39 --> 00:17:41

I say, yeah. He's like, is the Masjid

00:17:41 --> 00:17:42

open? I say, yeah, it's open.

00:17:43 --> 00:17:44

So, he came, I met him,

00:17:45 --> 00:17:45

and this

00:17:46 --> 00:17:47

I came from

00:17:47 --> 00:17:50

overseas like 3 days ago with the goal

00:17:50 --> 00:17:51

to lose my virginity in America.

00:17:52 --> 00:17:54

I was like, dang

00:17:54 --> 00:17:55

dude.

00:17:55 --> 00:17:57

And I said, what happened? He said, I

00:17:57 --> 00:17:58

went to like the red light district

00:17:59 --> 00:18:01

and I met a person

00:18:02 --> 00:18:02

and

00:18:03 --> 00:18:05

as she got in my car the police

00:18:06 --> 00:18:07

raided the police.

00:18:08 --> 00:18:10

Swear to God, it's true story.

00:18:10 --> 00:18:12

It's like, and as they were raiding it,

00:18:13 --> 00:18:14

I said to myself,

00:18:15 --> 00:18:16

I gotta go to the masjid.

00:18:17 --> 00:18:19

I said, what happened to the person? He

00:18:19 --> 00:18:20

said, she ran.

00:18:21 --> 00:18:22

So it's just me and the cops

00:18:23 --> 00:18:24

in Oklahoma.

00:18:25 --> 00:18:27

So they let him go.

00:18:28 --> 00:18:30

It was the 27th night of Ramadan, and

00:18:30 --> 00:18:32

he had no idea it was Ramadan, man.

00:18:33 --> 00:18:35

I have no idea how he didn't know

00:18:35 --> 00:18:35

it's Ramadan.

00:18:36 --> 00:18:38

But that's how like he was. And he

00:18:38 --> 00:18:40

was like what should I do right now?

00:18:40 --> 00:18:41

I was like first of all man, like

00:18:41 --> 00:18:43

Allah loves you bro.

00:18:43 --> 00:18:45

Like in spite of yourself, Allah brought you

00:18:45 --> 00:18:47

to this place, man.

00:18:47 --> 00:18:48

And he started crying and he was like,

00:18:48 --> 00:18:50

I didn't even wanna come here. Like I

00:18:50 --> 00:18:51

didn't wanna come to a mosque.

00:18:52 --> 00:18:53

I don't pray.

00:18:53 --> 00:18:54

I'm not a good person.

00:18:55 --> 00:18:57

And I was like, yeah, but Allah Subhanahu

00:18:57 --> 00:18:58

Wa Ta'ala Khta Rilliman Yasha.

00:19:00 --> 00:19:01

So he said like what should I do?

00:19:01 --> 00:19:03

I was like man just go make dua.

00:19:06 --> 00:19:06

So sometimes

00:19:07 --> 00:19:09

in spite of ourselves, Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala

00:19:09 --> 00:19:10

will guide us

00:19:11 --> 00:19:12

to blessed times.

00:19:13 --> 00:19:14

To make dua

00:19:15 --> 00:19:17

out of his love for us SubhanAllah. And

00:19:17 --> 00:19:20

Masha'Allah, the brother got married, he settled down.

00:19:20 --> 00:19:22

Hamdulillah, he's doing a lot better. Masha'Allah.

00:19:23 --> 00:19:23

Masha'Allah.

00:19:24 --> 00:19:26

So the first Al Qazad he said is

00:19:26 --> 00:19:28

to, like, think about religious text as the

00:19:28 --> 00:19:30

brothers were talking about sujood, laylatul Qadr, last

00:19:30 --> 00:19:32

third of the night. Right?

00:19:32 --> 00:19:34

And try to make dua at those times.

00:19:34 --> 00:19:37

When it's raining, it's hadith about that as

00:19:37 --> 00:19:37

well.

00:19:38 --> 00:19:40

The second is he said you should look

00:19:40 --> 00:19:42

for your emotional state.

00:19:44 --> 00:19:47

Like in when you find within yourself, and

00:19:47 --> 00:19:49

I think someone mentioned this, when you find

00:19:49 --> 00:19:50

within yourself

00:19:51 --> 00:19:52

that clarity

00:19:52 --> 00:19:54

and that hunger for dua,

00:19:54 --> 00:19:55

make dua.

00:19:57 --> 00:20:00

As Mohammed mentioned, like, Alhamak Allah, like Allah

00:20:00 --> 00:20:03

has inspired you to ask, so ask.

00:20:03 --> 00:20:06

And Abdullah bin Mas'ud, he used to say,

00:20:06 --> 00:20:08

you know, you should harvest those moments.

00:20:09 --> 00:20:11

Like that's like the Costco of spirituality,

00:20:12 --> 00:20:14

man. Like you can get anything you want

00:20:14 --> 00:20:16

now because your heart's there.

00:20:17 --> 00:20:19

And as one one of our sisters mentioned

00:20:19 --> 00:20:20

like my heart's in the game. When my

00:20:20 --> 00:20:22

heart's in the game like that's what he

00:20:22 --> 00:20:23

means by that's what he means by

00:20:25 --> 00:20:27

And also what he means is like if

00:20:27 --> 00:20:28

you feel down,

00:20:29 --> 00:20:31

then make dua in a way that will

00:20:31 --> 00:20:32

bring you hope.

00:20:32 --> 00:20:33

If you feel laxed,

00:20:34 --> 00:20:35

make dua in a way that will bring

00:20:35 --> 00:20:37

about a sense of responsibility.

00:20:37 --> 00:20:39

Like watching yourself

00:20:40 --> 00:20:41

and knowing yourself internally.

00:20:43 --> 00:20:45

The third is humility.

00:20:46 --> 00:20:48

To ask with humility,

00:20:49 --> 00:20:51

to ask in a state of need, iftakar.

00:20:52 --> 00:20:53

As we mentioned,

00:20:53 --> 00:20:55

a lot of times here some of our

00:20:55 --> 00:20:58

teachers used to say, oh Allah, enrich me

00:20:58 --> 00:21:00

by feeling poor to you.

00:21:01 --> 00:21:03

And don't make me poverty stricken by feel

00:21:03 --> 00:21:06

by feeling that I'm autonomous of you.

00:21:06 --> 00:21:08

It's also okay to, like, be happy in

00:21:08 --> 00:21:09

dua.

00:21:11 --> 00:21:12

You know, thank you.

00:21:12 --> 00:21:13

Allah says

00:21:15 --> 00:21:17

like be joyous, be happy. You guys can

00:21:17 --> 00:21:19

scoot forward and also scoot that way. It's

00:21:19 --> 00:21:20

fine. Insha'Allah.

00:21:20 --> 00:21:20

So

00:21:23 --> 00:21:24

all of those emotional moments,

00:21:25 --> 00:21:27

right, coupled with a sense of humility and

00:21:27 --> 00:21:28

grace,

00:21:29 --> 00:21:30

are important.

00:21:35 --> 00:21:37

The next is to be certain in what

00:21:37 --> 00:21:38

you ask for.

00:21:39 --> 00:21:40

And the Bsalay Salam,

00:21:42 --> 00:21:44

he said you shouldn't make dua, oh Allah

00:21:44 --> 00:21:46

do this in shit, do that in shit,

00:21:46 --> 00:21:47

oh Allah. If you want do this, if

00:21:47 --> 00:21:49

you want no, like be

00:21:49 --> 00:21:50

certain

00:21:50 --> 00:21:52

about what you ask.

00:21:52 --> 00:21:53

And be certain

00:21:53 --> 00:21:55

in the answer.

00:21:59 --> 00:22:01

The next is to never allow

00:22:01 --> 00:22:03

your sins and mistakes

00:22:05 --> 00:22:07

to keep you from believing that Allah

00:22:08 --> 00:22:10

will answer your dua.

00:22:11 --> 00:22:13

Of course, this means, like, someone who has

00:22:13 --> 00:22:15

that sense of guilt. Right? Not like someone

00:22:15 --> 00:22:16

that's just like

00:22:17 --> 00:22:19

living a life with impunity.

00:22:20 --> 00:22:22

That's why Sufain ibn Uyayna,

00:22:23 --> 00:22:25

he's one of the early scholars. He says

00:22:25 --> 00:22:26

something so beautiful.

00:22:26 --> 00:22:27

He said,

00:22:28 --> 00:22:29

you should never allow

00:22:34 --> 00:22:36

You should never allow any of you you

00:22:36 --> 00:22:38

should never allow yourself to feel

00:22:38 --> 00:22:40

that your dua won't be answered

00:22:40 --> 00:22:42

because of what you've done.

00:22:47 --> 00:22:50

Allah said he answered the dua of the

00:22:50 --> 00:22:51

worst creature, which is Ibis.

00:22:52 --> 00:22:53

When he asked him,

00:22:55 --> 00:22:56

give me time.

00:22:57 --> 00:23:00

So basically what he's saying is, you ain't

00:23:00 --> 00:23:00

Satan.

00:23:05 --> 00:23:07

The next is to feel that Allah is

00:23:07 --> 00:23:08

close to you.

00:23:09 --> 00:23:11

And there's something in in in it's really

00:23:11 --> 00:23:12

beautiful

00:23:12 --> 00:23:14

in Arabic, we kind of lose it in

00:23:14 --> 00:23:15

English,

00:23:15 --> 00:23:16

but in

00:23:17 --> 00:23:17

in,

00:23:18 --> 00:23:22

in Arabic if someone's like, relatively far away

00:23:22 --> 00:23:22

from me,

00:23:23 --> 00:23:24

I should use what's called harfenida,

00:23:25 --> 00:23:27

which is like an article of addressing someone,

00:23:27 --> 00:23:29

like a yo, like yo, like I guess

00:23:29 --> 00:23:30

in slang.

00:23:30 --> 00:23:32

Right? Someone's far away, you might try to

00:23:32 --> 00:23:33

catch their attention.

00:23:34 --> 00:23:34

Yeah,

00:23:34 --> 00:23:37

Ahmed. Yeah, Muhammad. Yeah Fatima.

00:23:37 --> 00:23:38

Yeah, Ayuhaladinahamanu.

00:23:39 --> 00:23:42

Right? Yeah. It's like someone that's far away.

00:23:42 --> 00:23:44

But someone that's, like, right here next to

00:23:44 --> 00:23:45

me,

00:23:45 --> 00:23:48

it's it's unacceptable to be, like, yeah, Ahmed.

00:23:48 --> 00:23:52

Like, what I'm right next to you. So

00:23:53 --> 00:23:54

there's something beautiful

00:23:55 --> 00:23:56

about Dua in the Quran

00:23:57 --> 00:23:58

then never you find yet in front of

00:23:58 --> 00:23:59

it.

00:24:01 --> 00:24:03

As if to say, I'm so close to

00:24:03 --> 00:24:04

you, don't have to say yet.

00:24:05 --> 00:24:06

Just call me.

00:24:07 --> 00:24:08

Just call me and I'll answer you.

00:24:13 --> 00:24:16

The Quran says, you know, call me, I

00:24:16 --> 00:24:18

answer you. Amrul Khattab used to say,

00:24:19 --> 00:24:22

like, I don't worry about the answer.

00:24:22 --> 00:24:24

I worry about me calling.

00:24:25 --> 00:24:27

And if the call is there,

00:24:27 --> 00:24:28

then the ijabatatima,

00:24:30 --> 00:24:31

then the answer comes with it.

00:24:36 --> 00:24:37

A few more inshallah,

00:24:38 --> 00:24:39

and then we'll move on.

00:24:41 --> 00:24:43

And that is the dua,

00:24:44 --> 00:24:45

it's best to start

00:24:46 --> 00:24:47

by praising Allah

00:24:50 --> 00:24:53

because Allah begins the Quran with Alhamd

00:24:54 --> 00:24:55

and also to end it

00:24:56 --> 00:24:57

with praising Allah.

00:25:02 --> 00:25:04

Allah says, like, those people in paradise they

00:25:04 --> 00:25:06

finished their dua with Alhamdulillah.

00:25:08 --> 00:25:10

The second is to send peace and blessings

00:25:10 --> 00:25:12

upon the prophet sallallahu alaihi wasalam

00:25:13 --> 00:25:16

because of a beautiful narration that Sayid Muhammad

00:25:16 --> 00:25:18

alaihi salatu salam. He was sitting one day

00:25:18 --> 00:25:21

and there was this man, he was supplicating.

00:25:32 --> 00:25:33

Like ask now.

00:25:34 --> 00:25:36

Meaning like this is a good opportunity

00:25:36 --> 00:25:38

for dua to be accepted.

00:25:39 --> 00:25:40

And that takes us to the last point,

00:25:41 --> 00:25:43

It doesn't matter what language you make Dua

00:25:43 --> 00:25:43

in.

00:25:44 --> 00:25:46

You know, sometimes people,

00:25:47 --> 00:25:48

like, they make it hard on themselves,

00:25:49 --> 00:25:51

but I would rather have someone make dua

00:25:51 --> 00:25:54

in a language that they're passionate in and

00:25:54 --> 00:25:57

they're able to encapsulate their emotions in, than

00:25:57 --> 00:25:58

just to repeat something

00:25:59 --> 00:26:01

that doesn't have any meaning to them.

00:26:02 --> 00:26:04

That's why if you notice on Fridays usually

00:26:04 --> 00:26:06

I make the Dua in English.

00:26:07 --> 00:26:08

Because like most people,

00:26:08 --> 00:26:10

they're not gonna really understand.

00:26:10 --> 00:26:12

I remember, this is a bad story, in

00:26:12 --> 00:26:14

Egypt when I worked at Dara Ifta.

00:26:15 --> 00:26:17

Dara Ifta was an interesting place to work,

00:26:17 --> 00:26:18

man.

00:26:18 --> 00:26:19

The house of Fatwa.

00:26:20 --> 00:26:22

And we had this complaint about this imam

00:26:24 --> 00:26:26

who he was a little bit he had

00:26:26 --> 00:26:26

some issues,

00:26:27 --> 00:26:29

and he was really angry

00:26:29 --> 00:26:30

at his flock.

00:26:31 --> 00:26:33

So he used to, like, you know,

00:26:33 --> 00:26:35

make dua and his flock were some of

00:26:35 --> 00:26:37

the students that were not Arabs. They were

00:26:37 --> 00:26:38

coming there to study.

00:26:39 --> 00:26:40

So he got angry at them and he

00:26:40 --> 00:26:42

began to make dua in Arabic against them

00:26:42 --> 00:26:44

and they didn't know he was making dua

00:26:44 --> 00:26:44

against them.

00:26:45 --> 00:26:45

He's like

00:26:47 --> 00:26:49

Allah send watermelons

00:26:49 --> 00:26:51

on them, man. Man.

00:26:52 --> 00:26:53

Like, disfigure their faces.

00:26:54 --> 00:26:56

All kind of crazy stuff, man.

00:26:56 --> 00:26:59

So one of the students started to understand

00:26:59 --> 00:27:01

Arabic. So he filed a complaint against

00:27:03 --> 00:27:04

this imam.

00:27:07 --> 00:27:07

And

00:27:08 --> 00:27:11

when we investigated it, they were like, oh,

00:27:11 --> 00:27:11

like, Amin

00:27:12 --> 00:27:14

Amin You Allah, You Rabbi Amin.

00:27:14 --> 00:27:16

So we asked him like he lost his

00:27:16 --> 00:27:18

position and stuff. I think he was moved

00:27:18 --> 00:27:18

to the Qariyah,

00:27:19 --> 00:27:21

but outside in the country. But when they

00:27:21 --> 00:27:23

ask him, like, why did you do that?

00:27:23 --> 00:27:24

He's like, man they didn't understand what I

00:27:24 --> 00:27:25

was saying, it doesn't matter. I was saying

00:27:25 --> 00:27:27

all kind of crazy stuff.

00:27:31 --> 00:27:31

So

00:27:32 --> 00:27:34

you should make dua, you should make dua

00:27:34 --> 00:27:36

in a language that, like, comes from the

00:27:36 --> 00:27:37

heart.

00:27:38 --> 00:27:39

Right? And is sincere.
