one reads, this day I have perfected for

you your religion

and completed my favor unto you, and chosen

submission as a religion.

Nonetheless, various lines of descent from Ali came

to be viewed by a significant Muslim, minority

as inheriting a prophetic charisma.

But most Muslims viewed the leadership of the

community as simply a political appointment

and sincerity.

The possibilities for growth that such an endeavor

hold may outweigh the benefits of having a

profit

to decide every minor legal

difference of opinion.

And many Muslim scholars in the past felt

this way. Some of the ancient scholars said

that God had nurtured humanity through sort of

like a baby and then a child stage,

a young adult stage. And humanity finally reached

the stage when it was ready to receive

and protect

the perfect revelation and walk as adults in

the world.

You know, like a fa like a parents

do with children, man had reached a stage

where it was now time for him to

00:34:57 --> 00:34:59

take what he had learned and apply it

and learn from it.

And that's certainly a legitimate,

response.

Another factor might be that the current environment,

and I thought about this many times, is

incapable of producing an individual possessing the level

of purity and simplicity

needed to be a prophet. Life is much

more corrupt than it was

00:35:21 --> 00:35:24

1400 years ago. And soon after the time

00:35:24 --> 00:35:26

of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, life

00:35:26 --> 00:35:29

did become extremely corrupt even for the Muslims.

00:35:30 --> 00:35:31

Wealth poured into their community,

00:35:32 --> 00:35:34

political chaos erupted.

00:35:34 --> 00:35:36

There was all sorts of problems that infected

00:35:36 --> 00:35:37

the community.

00:35:37 --> 00:35:40

Now needless to say, the Byzantine and Rome

00:35:40 --> 00:35:42

and in Persian and the Indian and Chinese

00:35:43 --> 00:35:45

civilizations were already on their way down.

00:35:46 --> 00:35:47

Maybe life just became

00:35:48 --> 00:35:50

too corrupt. And that none of us

00:35:51 --> 00:35:54

really are untouched by this corrupting influence of

00:35:54 --> 00:35:54

life.

00:35:55 --> 00:35:57

There's even support for that point of view

00:35:57 --> 00:35:57

in the Quran.

For example, and the end in the hadith.

There's a famous saying of prophet Muhammad, peace

be upon him, which goes the best generation

is my generation.

And then the next

and then the next. And then there will

come a time when a person's oath will

outstrip his,

Muslims someday will shun the Quran.

And anyone who reads the Quran knows it.

The one thing that they all preached in

and none of us could deny is that

There is no god but god.

Ron tells us that there is none and

nothing to be worshiped, but Allah.

be worshiped. There is no worship except the

worship due to Allah. It implies

that the many different objects of worship

that we as mankind choose.

It implies that the various objects of worship

that we choose besides God Almighty

have no real authority or power, and that

the divisions

and hatreds that their misdirected venerations lead to

00:41:55 --> 00:41:56

are totally unnecessary

and a result of nothing more than evil

self destructive

man made illusions.

00:42:03 --> 00:42:05

So that when I'm the example I showed

my daughter, the man who pursues wealth above

all else, his entire focus in life is

getting that

money and he hurts others to do it,

stomps on others to do it,

00:42:17 --> 00:42:20

cheats this one, robs this one. He's living

00:42:20 --> 00:42:21

an illusion

00:42:22 --> 00:42:25

because that'll never bring him happiness, it'll never

00:42:25 --> 00:42:27

bring him inner peace, it'll make him slave,

00:42:27 --> 00:42:29

a slave to every dollar,

00:42:29 --> 00:42:31

scared to death to lose it, and worst

00:42:31 --> 00:42:33

of all, when he goes on to the

00:42:33 --> 00:42:35

next life, when the only thing he'll bring

00:42:35 --> 00:42:36

with him that has any,

00:42:37 --> 00:42:40

worth at all, are his spiritual, moral and

00:42:40 --> 00:42:43

ethical achievements, the goodness that he grew in,

00:42:43 --> 00:42:45

when he's bankrupt in that, and his pockets

00:42:45 --> 00:42:48

on earth were filled with money, he fulfill

00:42:48 --> 00:42:49

the terrible

00:42:49 --> 00:42:50

terrible

00:42:50 --> 00:42:52

loss of that illusion that he lived.

00:42:54 --> 00:42:56

And that's one of the messages of the

00:42:56 --> 00:42:58

Quran that there is none to be worshiped

00:42:58 --> 00:43:00

but Allah. And when we worship any others,

00:43:00 --> 00:43:04

we destroy ourselves, we destroy others, we separate

00:43:04 --> 00:43:07

ourselves from others, we our object of worship

00:43:07 --> 00:43:09

becomes something we cling to and we keep

00:43:09 --> 00:43:12

others away from us. We separate ourselves into

00:43:12 --> 00:43:14

different groups. We hurt people that don't agree

00:43:14 --> 00:43:16

with our object of worship or we feel

00:43:16 --> 00:43:17

we are in the way of our object

00:43:17 --> 00:43:18

of worship

00:43:18 --> 00:43:19

becomes a disintegrating,

00:43:20 --> 00:43:20

demoralizing

00:43:22 --> 00:43:24

harmful factor in the human race.

00:43:25 --> 00:43:27

But then but the phrase,

00:43:29 --> 00:43:31

of course means that there is but one

00:43:31 --> 00:43:33

spiritual and moral standard

00:43:34 --> 00:43:35

governing humanity

00:43:35 --> 00:43:38

and one measure of a person's worth. As

00:43:38 --> 00:43:41

the Quran so poignantly says, oh, mankind,

00:43:41 --> 00:43:44

low, we have created you male and female

00:43:44 --> 00:43:47

and may have made you nations and tribes.

00:43:47 --> 00:43:49

Why? So that you may come to know

00:43:49 --> 00:43:50

one another.

00:43:52 --> 00:43:53

So that you may come to know one

00:43:53 --> 00:43:54

another.

00:43:54 --> 00:43:56

Lo, the noblest among you in the sight

00:43:56 --> 00:43:58

of Allah is the one who is foremost

00:43:58 --> 00:44:00

and foremost in goodness.

00:44:03 --> 00:44:06

A single moral standard applying to all humanity.

And that we relate, the ground tells us,

God made us male and female and nations

00:44:13 --> 00:44:14

and tribes. Why? So we could come to

00:44:14 --> 00:44:17

know each other and interact with each other.

And what type of interaction makes us the

00:44:19 --> 00:44:21

foremost, the best in the sight of God?

00:44:22 --> 00:44:24

And the and how and achieve the most

00:44:24 --> 00:44:26

peace and serenity in this life and the

00:44:26 --> 00:44:28

greatest reward in the hereafter? Our level of

00:44:28 --> 00:44:28

goodness

00:44:30 --> 00:44:32

and our relationships with others and our commitment

00:44:32 --> 00:44:34

to our worship of God Almighty.

00:44:36 --> 00:44:37

Most important of all,

00:44:39 --> 00:44:41

implies that the barriers we set up between

00:44:41 --> 00:44:44

ourselves and others are nothing more than fallacies.

00:44:45 --> 00:44:48

Because we all must answer to the supreme

00:44:48 --> 00:44:51

same supreme almighty authority,

00:44:51 --> 00:44:52

God almighty.

00:44:53 --> 00:44:55

In 7th century Arabia,

each tribe, as you all know, had its

00:44:58 --> 00:45:00

own deity from which it sought protection,

00:45:01 --> 00:45:02

favoritism,

permission,

00:45:03 --> 00:45:04

solicitation,

and it's perpetual

intertribal

strife. Every tribe felt self justified.

Right? This tribe said

appeal to its deity.

Give me,

let me do this. Let me crush these

people over here. Let me steal from this

tribe over there. Go and pray to it.

This one went to his deity and this

and they were using their gods and their

00:45:26 --> 00:45:29

objects of worship to support this perpetual intertribal

00:45:30 --> 00:45:33

strife that was tearing the Arabian Peninsula apart.

00:45:34 --> 00:45:36

That it kept it completely disintegrated.

00:45:38 --> 00:45:40

But it took Islam's monotheism.

00:45:42 --> 00:45:44

To unite the warring factions as the Quran

00:45:44 --> 00:45:45

so poignantly

points out.

00:45:47 --> 00:45:47

It said,

and hold fast,

all of you together

to the rope of Allah and do not

separate.

And remember Allah's favor unto you, how you

were enemies and he made friendship between your

hearts so that you became as brothers by

his grace. And how you are on the

brink of an abyss of fire

The Sri Lankan brothers were siding with the

Pakistani brothers, with the Saudi brothers, against the

Palestinians and the Americans. People were really starting

to get angry. I remember some of the

things that were being said. Oh, you Saudis,

why don't you go back to the sand

from where you came? And the Saudis said,

became Muslim just the other day. And the

white brothers said to the black brothers, yeah,

from Palestine. He never says anything. He's the

most quiet guy in the mosque. I don't

even think any of us realized he was

all standing up, ready to come pounce on

each other, and he stood up and he

the children of Israel

is a people in the as presented in

who throughout most of their history, much of

to monotheism,

Outside influences

in a constant struggle

worship of 1 God and heathen pressures.

And this in part explains

their need, the children of Israel's needs to

insulate themselves and isolate themselves from the social

surroundings.

And it explains their attempt to preserve and

protect

00:57:55 --> 00:57:56

the racial and cultural purity.

Now, that in itself is not bad but,

as the Quran presents them, the children of

00:58:03 --> 00:58:05

Israel came to see themselves

as God's chosen people. Not just in the

sense that he favored them with many prophets,

but in the sense that they were somehow

00:58:13 --> 00:58:15

better than the rest of humanity. That God

00:58:15 --> 00:58:17

made something like a superhuman

00:58:17 --> 00:58:18

race.

00:58:18 --> 00:58:21

A race that is above and beyond the

00:58:21 --> 00:58:21

other races.

A race created for the benefit of all

the other races.

A superior race.

And they saw themselves as God's chosen people

to the exclusion of all others and as

sons of God in the Old Testament sense,

especially loved by God. Well, all else are

Because of this,

they can never,

and was unable to accept

the oneness of all mankind

situation is almost completely the opposite, the reverse.

too far in that.

Christianity gets its solidity, its coherence from an

intense spiritual yearning to be known loved by

God.

So while the Jews and the pagans of

the Arabian Peninsula

were stubbornly closed to the any message that

we see the Quran chose the Christians to

be more easily affected by the spiritual force

eyes when certain verses are recited, etcetera.

But the difficulty that such universal face as

Christianity

the difficulty they encounter is what?

It's the great diversity of people they bring

Now why is that a problem?

Because when you bring in all these people,

you just don't bring their bodies.

You bring their backgrounds.

You bring their symbols. You bring their cultural

practices.

All these things could potentially pervert the religion.

All their former religious ideas, all their cultural

background, everything. They are they're gonna see interpret

things through that experience.

And so that's always a potential danger

to corrupt the purity of the teachings of

the religion.

From the Muslim view, such was the case

with Christianity.

eagerly embraces

the symbolic language for people to allow strange

You know, all these things are that come

from the surrounding culture. Ideas that come from

the mystery cults. Ideas that seem to be

they it shares with Mithraism and some of

the other religions in the region. As Christianity

embraced all these peoples and invited them into

the religion, those ideas did, at least from

the Muslim point of view, affect and distort

the teachings of the Prophet. So here we

see 2 different sides of the coin. 1

it was a key moment in history

he brought both implications of monotheism

to mankind

The oneness of God, the worship of only

one God, and the unity of all mankind

of that on Earth.

And the only community

that I think, at least, witnesses that in

pure unadulterated

worked in a university there for a year.

thronging

to this place,

responding to that call.

He said, and who and if he can
