but now we live in a time that

will will destroy the prayer. They'll skip the

man, I wish he would just read

just get the salat over with. You know?

Meaning what?

Even if he was out partying with his,

like, friends, just like a young man,

it didn't occur to them, like, that they

would skip the salat in the in the

Masjid.

You know? Because that would just be dumb.

Why would you wanna cut off your your

tie ties with Allah Ta'ala? So it doesn't

mean that people in the past were were

00:21:00 --> 00:21:02

were were sinless or were even,

00:21:02 --> 00:21:04

particularly pious people, but they had a type

00:21:04 --> 00:21:06

of common sense about them that's gone now.

That seems not to be so common anymore,

which is what, you you know, no matter

what you do, it's just stupid for a

person to cut their ties off to Allah.

So whatever problems the Ummah has, everyone in

Hajj has those problems. Whatever issues the Umma

has, everyone in Hajj has those issues,

you know. So you'll see people doing some,

00:21:40 --> 00:21:40

pardon pardon my saying, you'll see some people

doing some pretty dumb things in Hajj.

I'm not saying that about everybody

and even those who are doing dumb things

00:21:49 --> 00:21:51

inshallah accepts from them and and uh-uh

00:21:51 --> 00:21:53

forgives them but

that doesn't make dumb things not dumb.

So people will be cutting, people will be

00:22:00 --> 00:22:02

jacking stuff, people will be, you know, the

00:22:03 --> 00:22:05

the people will, like, stone on the 1st

00:22:05 --> 00:22:07

day of, of Arafat, and the first thing

00:22:07 --> 00:22:08

they'll do is, like, cut their beard off

00:22:08 --> 00:22:10

as if, like, it's some sort of curse

00:22:10 --> 00:22:12

or whatever. And, you know, they'll be hot

00:22:12 --> 00:22:14

and high fiving each other, you know, clean

00:22:14 --> 00:22:15

shaven coming out of the it's like the

00:22:15 --> 00:22:16

sunnah of the prophet. So I'm like, you

00:22:16 --> 00:22:17

don't have to even if you wanna shave

00:22:17 --> 00:22:18

it, you don't have to be so excited

00:22:18 --> 00:22:20

about that. You know? Like,

00:22:20 --> 00:22:22

at least while you're on Hajj. You know

what I mean? But, like, you see people,

you're like, yeah.

The the Ummah has their issues. It's not

you know, because of, like, science and technology

that Ummah has, you can see, is very

clear. Like, they have issues for certain bad

habits that they have that have nothing to

you know, anything with regards to the deen.

if you wanna make tawaf, you wanna make

tawaf close to the Kaaba,

go to the mataf when it's not crowded,

if you want to, you know, touch in

the black stone is difficult, but at least

more reward for praying your 5 daily prayers

in the congregation

than you will for the novelty of being

able to enter the Hijra or touch the

00:23:30 --> 00:23:32

walls of the Kaaba or touch the

00:23:33 --> 00:23:35

or touch the the door or the moltazam

00:23:35 --> 00:23:36

or the black stone or any of these

00:23:36 --> 00:23:37

things.

00:23:38 --> 00:23:40

It's a kind of common sense. It's almost

00:23:40 --> 00:23:41

kinda like left us.

00:23:42 --> 00:23:45

And forget about, you know, forget about the

00:23:45 --> 00:23:46

I'm talking about just praying 5 times a

day, then forget about praying in the congregation,

which has almost become like a folklore,

to the community of Muslims in America, except

for, like, a very hard fringe

fundamentalist, like, you know,

a group of people that everybody else considers

not important in the eyes of the people,

but they're important in the eyes of Allah

Right? So there's this whole controversy with regards

to the celebration of the mawlid of the

prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam. Is it a

bidah or not? But even, you know, without

00:26:06 --> 00:26:08

talking about the issue, like, if you're more

00:26:08 --> 00:26:10

excited about it than you are about

00:26:11 --> 00:26:13

any of the other things that are actually

legislated by the prophet if you look forward

00:26:16 --> 00:26:17

to going to, like, like, a molded party

00:26:17 --> 00:26:19

more than you go look forward to,

00:26:19 --> 00:26:21

more than you look forward to any of

00:26:21 --> 00:26:22

the salawat much less the

00:26:23 --> 00:26:25

the the the Friday prayer or something like

that. Something is out of place.

that Abu Jahl himself will receive a break

have you not seen

If a river was flowing in front of

the door of 1 of you.

messenger of Allah

saying to the the the Peninsular Arabs.

There's no rivers flowing through the Arabian Peninsula.

in the extreme southern tip, and there's some

in the extreme north. But the part of

the the the Arabian Peninsula that they're in,

So it must have been amazing for them.

And people used fight and kill each other

over wells for centuries even after that. So

peninsula. That's hard enough. Just walking through the

monastic,

the rights of Hajj while Hajj is going

on itself, they would die of thirst.

So much so that there's you can see

there's, like, a tour. There's a old,

medieval,

aqueduct system that was built by Zubaida, the

the wife of

the pious wife of Haruna Rashid. And when

she heard that people would like die of

thirst and Hajj,

spent all the money that she had,

her own personal money. She spent it, and

to find what's the closest source of water

and build the aqueduct system that ran only

on gravity,

Arafat, which is, you know, it's like a

of the project, he prepared an expense report

over all of those years, how much everything

for oversight purposes that he prepared the entire

report and gave it to her. And,

river, and she said, will read this report

on the day of judgment.

that's how people used to do things,

in the Ummah.

your homes, and you bathed in it, 5

times every day? These are people that, you

oftentimes,

00:36:26 --> 00:36:28

is the only time that they they took

00:36:28 --> 00:36:30

a bath. And even that that was difficult

00:36:30 --> 00:36:31

for them to get the water and things

00:36:31 --> 00:36:33

like that. It was something they did as

00:36:33 --> 00:36:34

a matter of deen.

00:36:34 --> 00:36:36

It wasn't easy for them. So that person

00:36:36 --> 00:36:38

was bathing once a week,

00:36:38 --> 00:36:39

some of them,

00:36:40 --> 00:36:42

for them to think about, like, bathing 5

00:36:42 --> 00:36:43

times a day,

00:36:43 --> 00:36:45

it's it's very difficult for them to think

00:36:45 --> 00:36:45

about.

00:36:47 --> 00:36:47

That,

00:36:48 --> 00:36:50

if a person like were to bathe, 5

00:36:50 --> 00:36:52

5 times daily,

00:36:52 --> 00:36:54

would that person would there be any? Would

00:36:54 --> 00:36:57

there be any grime or grit or dirt

00:36:57 --> 00:36:58

left on that person?

00:36:58 --> 00:36:59

And they said no,

00:37:00 --> 00:37:02

none of that person's grime would no no

00:37:02 --> 00:37:04

grime would be left on that person.

00:37:05 --> 00:37:05

And he said

00:37:06 --> 00:37:08

that that's the likeness of the 5 prayers.

Allah ta'ala

through them will efface

00:37:13 --> 00:37:14

a person's sins.

Or vast,

running river,

that that crosses the, the the threshold or

the door of 1 of you, and you,

bathe in it, 5 times daily.

It's just narrated by by by Muslim. And

so that river, it doesn't just mean cleanliness.

There's so much in it. It's a it's

a river of what?

It's a river not only just a cleanliness.

The cleanliness is part of it. Water, the

only what you do with water is more

than just clean yourself. You drink it,

and it it,

you know, it it gives you life.

And so like that, the first effect of

the prayer is the forgiveness. Then afterward, there's

you receive,

you're infused with with the divine help, with

the divine aid,

through that, through that,

00:38:36 --> 00:38:38

through that prayer. That's what you're getting your

00:38:38 --> 00:38:40

help from Allah through.

00:38:40 --> 00:38:42

And a person should this is one of

00:38:42 --> 00:38:43

the one

00:38:43 --> 00:38:46

of the meditations that a person should engage

00:38:46 --> 00:38:48

their mind with and engage their heart with

00:38:48 --> 00:38:50

when they're prayer praying. That through this salah,

00:38:50 --> 00:38:51

through this prayer,

00:38:52 --> 00:38:54

the the the the the the faith is

00:38:54 --> 00:38:56

coming from. The word faith is actually used

00:38:56 --> 00:38:58

a lot in the discourse

00:38:58 --> 00:38:59

of the the the sufia,

00:39:00 --> 00:39:01

and by the time it gets to the

00:39:01 --> 00:39:04

subcontinent, it turns into fable like Adnan

00:39:04 --> 00:39:05

fable. Helped him in his studies.

But it's

literally means, like, for something to outpour to

00:39:11 --> 00:39:12

flow.

00:39:19 --> 00:39:21

Right? Faith means for something to pour out

into, you know, to to flow. So that's

what the is. The has its own faith.

It has a spiritual outpouring of the divine

grace that a person receives from it. But

again, if you lock the doors to your

heart,

00:39:34 --> 00:39:35

you know, the river can be running,

00:39:36 --> 00:39:37

the river can be running,

00:39:38 --> 00:39:40

in front of your door 5 times daily.

00:39:40 --> 00:39:41

If you lock the door and sit inside

00:39:41 --> 00:39:43

of your house, you can be, you know,

00:39:43 --> 00:39:44

you can be the dirtiest,

00:39:45 --> 00:39:47

dog in the on the street,

00:39:47 --> 00:39:49

and it's not gonna help you. You have

00:39:49 --> 00:39:50

to open your doors,

00:39:51 --> 00:39:53

to your heart and let that let let

00:39:53 --> 00:39:54

that fade in. Let it flow through you

00:39:54 --> 00:39:55

and clean

00:39:55 --> 00:39:58

whatever is there. And, you have to bathe

00:39:58 --> 00:39:59

in it, you have to drink it, you

00:39:59 --> 00:40:01

have to imbibe it, and take the from

00:40:02 --> 00:40:04

it. But a person should feel that when

00:40:04 --> 00:40:05

they when they pray.

00:40:06 --> 00:40:07

Part of it is what? Is that like

00:40:07 --> 00:40:09

I like I said, that the river is

00:40:09 --> 00:40:11

there. That's the hard part. So many people,

their door is there, but there's it's all

just barren. The river is there. Now you

00:40:15 --> 00:40:16

have to open the door, and you have

00:40:16 --> 00:40:17

to you have to bathe in it. You

00:40:17 --> 00:40:19

have to drink from it yourself. So that's

00:40:19 --> 00:40:21

what a person should imagine and not imagine

00:40:21 --> 00:40:23

as in, like, fake make up something fake,

00:40:23 --> 00:40:25

but as in that that's how they have

00:40:25 --> 00:40:27

to set their mind up and their heart

00:40:27 --> 00:40:28

up is that they should also

00:40:28 --> 00:40:30

accept that that and and behold,

00:40:31 --> 00:40:32

bear witness to that,

that that outpouring

and effluence of divine grace that happens in

the salat

as a point of iman, that this is

helping me more than anything else is helping

00:40:42 --> 00:40:42

me.

This is helping me more than my studies,

more than my money, more than my job,

00:40:47 --> 00:40:49

more than my my passport, more than any

00:40:49 --> 00:40:50

of these things.

And that's something, I guess, people have taken.

People

have been become very and very, deceived by.

a great vehicle of help from Allah

If you don't believe that about the salat,

then you're just crippling your salat.

You're just crippling it. You're cutting it off.

You're you're you're cutting yourself off from benefit

from it. Otherwise, there's supernatural amount of benefit

that a person can get from it if

00:41:34 --> 00:41:36

they if they accept it and they embrace

00:41:37 --> 00:41:39

and they embrace what what it is. Obviously,

if you're gonna get a supernatural amount of

00:41:41 --> 00:41:43

benefit from it, you're not gonna you know,

00:41:43 --> 00:41:45

if you have that mindset mentality,

00:41:45 --> 00:41:47

you're not gonna pray, like, you know, like,

00:41:48 --> 00:41:50

you know, is just like you do a

00:41:50 --> 00:41:51

quick hat trick and then run back to

work. You're thinking about

your, job and you're thinking about this and

that while you're not gonna do that. Right?

So that's where the Khushu comes from. The

Khushu is not like, I'm I'm I'm I'm

be that humble in the prayer. No.

All of us need it. The pious ones

are not the ones who are like perfect

angels and then they pray and then their

prayer is pious. Rather the person who's most,

beholden to their need and at the same

a lot of dumb stuff in your life,

then you're you're beholden to your need even

more than than than another person is. And

some people, this is a problem that if

they're so pious, then they have a difficult

time, being humble.

it was something consensual. It wasn't

like he, you know, whatever.

He forced himself upon her. But a man,

a woman, you know, they were into each

other so they kissed one another

and, then he felt really bad. He felt

real crummy about it because he knew he

wasn't supposed to do it.

And again, present company is obviously far too

pious for these things, but you'd be surprised

people come with, like,

you know, like, oh, Sheikh, you know, I

did this and now what am I gonna

do? I'm going to * blah blah blah.

And so this is one of the beautiful

things about the Sahaba

They were real people.

read through the narrations of the Sahaba, even

after the prophet passed away, that they had

Indeed, good deeds will drive away,

When a person does something bad,

everyone does bad things from now now and

good deeds will drive away and cast out

evil ones.

your your sunnahs. Pray some

as an intermediate way of coping with sin

before you can give it up.

The ideal is to give it up and

make and repent for it, but this is

also part of the the stepping stone to

00:46:41 --> 00:46:43

getting to that point because that's that point

00:46:43 --> 00:46:44

is not that easy for everybody.

00:46:46 --> 00:46:48

Certain sins are are are you can give

00:46:48 --> 00:46:49

them up very easily.

00:46:49 --> 00:46:51

But the ones that are that you can't,

00:46:51 --> 00:46:52

at least you should counterbalance them with some

00:46:52 --> 00:46:54

good deed that if someone does something,

00:46:55 --> 00:46:56

you know,

00:46:56 --> 00:46:58

that they should they should do something else

00:46:58 --> 00:47:00

in in exchange for it. Especially those things

00:47:00 --> 00:47:03

that are addictions and things like that that

00:47:03 --> 00:47:04

are not easy to get get rid of

00:47:04 --> 00:47:06

so fast, bad habits,

00:47:06 --> 00:47:08

at least a person should be constantly thinking

00:47:08 --> 00:47:10

about how to balance them out in the

00:47:10 --> 00:47:12

scale pans as an intermediate step toward getting

00:47:12 --> 00:47:15

rid of them. But this, salat is also,

00:47:15 --> 00:47:17

in that sense, a great vehicle of help

00:47:17 --> 00:47:17

from Allah.

00:47:18 --> 00:47:19

In

00:47:19 --> 00:47:20

order to

00:47:21 --> 00:47:21

in order

00:47:22 --> 00:47:24

to, get to the point where a person

00:47:24 --> 00:47:26

can give the sin up and counteract its

00:47:26 --> 00:47:27

its evil,

00:47:28 --> 00:47:29

its evil qualities.

00:47:29 --> 00:47:31

And in that sense, the salat is,

00:47:32 --> 00:47:32

again, another,

00:47:33 --> 00:47:35

sense that in in which it's a great

00:47:35 --> 00:47:36

gift and blessing from

00:47:55 --> 00:47:56

Muslim.

That the salat,

who narrates the salat,

the 5 daily prayers, and from 1

to the next

is a an expiation

for those sins that are that that come

between them, meaning between each of the 5

00:48:13 --> 00:48:14

prayers

as long as a person is not,

a person is not

engulfed by the major sins.

So the major sins are those sins that

are mentioned in the Quran

that,

are they're they're mentioned with emphasis in the

Quran or in the hadith with emphasis or

with the threat of a particular punishment or,

mentioned again and again.

Those sins are like murder,

00:48:44 --> 00:48:45

theft,

00:48:46 --> 00:48:46

lying,

00:48:47 --> 00:48:48

backbiting, etcetera.

So other than those, there are a number

00:48:52 --> 00:48:54

of sins that are considered to be from

00:48:55 --> 00:48:57

the that their sins against Allah. A person

00:48:57 --> 00:48:58

knows that they're not right,

00:48:58 --> 00:49:01

but they're not necessarily they're not necessarily,

00:49:01 --> 00:49:04

those sins that are repeatedly mentioned in the,

00:49:04 --> 00:49:06

in the book of Allah mentioned with such

00:49:06 --> 00:49:08

emphasis like transacting

00:49:12 --> 00:49:14

that a person should take the notice of

00:49:14 --> 00:49:15

war from Allah and his Those

00:49:16 --> 00:49:16

are

00:49:16 --> 00:49:18

the Those are the major sins. There are

00:49:18 --> 00:49:20

a number of sins a person doing something

00:49:20 --> 00:49:21

that they know that they're supposed to not

00:49:21 --> 00:49:22

do,

00:49:23 --> 00:49:24

or they have a feeling that this is

00:49:24 --> 00:49:26

not the I shouldn't be doing this or

00:49:26 --> 00:49:28

I shouldn't be behaving this way.

00:49:28 --> 00:49:30

Those sins are are are forgiven through the

00:49:30 --> 00:49:33

salat when it's when it's when it's properly

00:49:33 --> 00:49:33

performed

00:49:34 --> 00:49:36

and from Jumah to Jumah and from Ramadan

00:49:36 --> 00:49:37

to Ramadan and Hajj, etcetera.

As for the

00:49:40 --> 00:49:42

as for the the major sins there, the

00:49:42 --> 00:49:44

a person has to then repent from them.

00:49:44 --> 00:49:47

But in the repentance from the major sins,

a person will have the minor sins forgiven

00:49:50 --> 00:49:51

as well.

00:49:51 --> 00:49:53

And if a person doesn't repent from the

00:49:53 --> 00:49:55

major sins, then the minor sins also they

00:49:55 --> 00:49:57

stay on the docket that a person is

00:49:57 --> 00:49:59

eligible to be punished for them. And so

00:49:59 --> 00:50:01

the idea is that the minor sins are

00:50:01 --> 00:50:03

all they're minor in in the sense that

00:50:03 --> 00:50:04

they're not

00:50:04 --> 00:50:06

mentioned as much, but they may be the

00:50:06 --> 00:50:08

greater portion of a person's sins. They're forgiven

00:50:08 --> 00:50:09

from salat to salat.

00:50:10 --> 00:50:12

And if a person has find themselves involved

00:50:12 --> 00:50:13

in one of the major sins and let

00:50:13 --> 00:50:15

them repent from it so that the minor

00:50:15 --> 00:50:18

sins are again eligible for forgiveness through the

00:50:18 --> 00:50:18

prayer.

00:50:19 --> 00:50:21

And so this is comes back to something

00:50:21 --> 00:50:23

that we mentioned with regards to the the

00:50:23 --> 00:50:24

previous hadith,

00:50:24 --> 00:50:24

kiss from from a woman,

which is what like, for example,

major sin, but there are many

00:50:40 --> 00:50:41

there are many,

things that are like a prelude toward it,

in escalation

00:50:47 --> 00:50:48

from things that are pretty

00:50:48 --> 00:50:50

much not leaving a whole lot to the

00:50:50 --> 00:50:51

imagination between,

00:50:52 --> 00:50:53

the 2 partners,

00:50:53 --> 00:50:55

all the way to just, you know, kind

00:50:55 --> 00:50:58

of flirtatious exchange of of of words or

00:50:58 --> 00:50:59

texts or whatever,

00:51:00 --> 00:51:01

Whatsapp or whatever people do nowadays,

00:51:03 --> 00:51:04

that

00:51:05 --> 00:51:08

the modern sensibility is what is that these

00:51:08 --> 00:51:09

are victimless crimes.

00:51:09 --> 00:51:11

That what if 2 consenting adults,

00:51:12 --> 00:51:15

participate in these things, then they're victimless crimes.

00:51:16 --> 00:51:18

And we'll say what? We'll say, look,

00:51:19 --> 00:51:21

the creation has a right and the creator

00:51:21 --> 00:51:23

has a right. Just because the creation waives

00:51:23 --> 00:51:25

their right doesn't mean that the creator's right

00:51:25 --> 00:51:26

is waived.

00:51:26 --> 00:51:28

And so that's the the idea in this

00:51:28 --> 00:51:30

is that that, the reason I clarified that

00:51:30 --> 00:51:32

it's that the the kiss was

00:51:32 --> 00:51:34

from the of the Hadith is consensual.

00:51:35 --> 00:51:37

Why? Because a person actually, like, forced himself

00:51:37 --> 00:51:40

on another woman. The the sin becomes qualitatively

00:51:40 --> 00:51:40

different.

The salat is not gonna get that forgiven.

A person did something like that, they forced

themselves or they abused another person, whether it's

a man or a woman, and whether the

00:51:50 --> 00:51:51

abuser is a man or a woman.

00:51:52 --> 00:51:55

And, unfortunately, in our community, we've seen examples

00:51:55 --> 00:51:56

of all of those permutations

00:51:57 --> 00:51:59

that in any one of those cases, the

00:51:59 --> 00:52:01

salat itself is not going to get it

00:52:01 --> 00:52:01

forgiven.

00:52:02 --> 00:52:05

Rather, if it's consensual, then it will be

00:52:05 --> 00:52:05

forgiven.

00:52:07 --> 00:52:09

Through the salat so long as a person

00:52:09 --> 00:52:10

doesn't, you know, doesn't

00:52:11 --> 00:52:14

habitually return to it. Because the mentioned that

00:52:14 --> 00:52:15

even those

00:52:15 --> 00:52:16

those minor sins that a person makes a

00:52:16 --> 00:52:18

habit of or certain a person casts off,

00:52:18 --> 00:52:20

it becomes a kabira. It becomes a major

00:52:20 --> 00:52:22

sin through a person taking it lightly.

00:52:23 --> 00:52:24

And then if it actually becomes some sort

00:52:24 --> 00:52:26

of or if there's an element of abuse

00:52:26 --> 00:52:28

in it where one person

00:52:28 --> 00:52:30

abuses another, and takes away their half of

00:52:30 --> 00:52:31

their right,

00:52:31 --> 00:52:34

then then it takes on other dimensions that

00:52:34 --> 00:52:36

not only it it requires to Allah,

00:52:36 --> 00:52:38

it also requires restitution.

00:52:38 --> 00:52:40

That that person either you has to forgive

00:52:40 --> 00:52:41

you explicitly

00:52:42 --> 00:52:43

or,

00:52:44 --> 00:52:45

or, some sort of,

00:52:46 --> 00:52:47

if they don't forgive you on their own,

00:52:47 --> 00:52:48

if they forgive you on their own, then

00:52:48 --> 00:52:51

it it stops right there. If they don't

00:52:51 --> 00:52:53

forgive you on their own, then some sort

00:52:53 --> 00:52:54

of court or criminal proceeding

00:52:55 --> 00:52:58

or arbitration has to happen, whatever judgment comes

00:52:58 --> 00:53:00

down through that, that judgment comes down. Even

00:53:00 --> 00:53:02

then, sometimes the judgment comes down. For example,

00:53:03 --> 00:53:05

a person accuses another person of abuse,

00:53:05 --> 00:53:07

And because of a lack of evidence, there's

00:53:07 --> 00:53:08

no conviction there.

00:53:09 --> 00:53:12

In that case, a person shouldn't think that,

00:53:12 --> 00:53:14

oh, look. I'm off scot free because I

00:53:14 --> 00:53:16

wasn't convicted for it. That case then gets

00:53:16 --> 00:53:18

kicked to the court of the hereafter.

00:53:18 --> 00:53:20

It's in all of

00:53:20 --> 00:53:22

our best interest to settle these things in

00:53:22 --> 00:53:23

this world

00:53:23 --> 00:53:25

because there is no,

00:53:25 --> 00:53:26

there is no,

00:53:27 --> 00:53:28

punishment

00:53:28 --> 00:53:31

in this world which will rival the punishments

00:53:31 --> 00:53:32

of that that side.

There are punishments on that side that for

00:53:35 --> 00:53:36

relatively minor sins that a person will think

00:53:36 --> 00:53:38

it would be been easier just for me

00:53:38 --> 00:53:40

to get the death penalty in the dunya.

And that doesn't have anything to do with,

those things that are even even greater than

00:53:44 --> 00:53:45

that in in magnitude.

drinking alcohol and consuming pork. Is that
