00:00:03 --> 00:00:06

This is your sister, Naeema b Robert here,

00:00:06 --> 00:00:09

award winning author of almost 30 books for

00:00:09 --> 00:00:11

children, teens, and adults.

00:00:11 --> 00:00:14

And I have to say right off the

00:00:14 --> 00:00:17

bat that, I do have a weakness for

00:00:17 --> 00:00:18

children's books.

00:00:19 --> 00:00:21

I started out in children's books. I've written

00:00:21 --> 00:00:23

more children's books than anything else, and I

00:00:23 --> 00:00:25

love helping sisters

00:00:26 --> 00:00:28

write books for children because as it happens,

00:00:28 --> 00:00:30

a lot of sisters like you would like

00:00:30 --> 00:00:32

to write for children. So

00:00:32 --> 00:00:34

I decided to put together a little series

00:00:35 --> 00:00:37

where I can share with you

00:00:37 --> 00:00:40

the things that I share with my clients

00:00:40 --> 00:00:42

and with my students. Some of the most

00:00:42 --> 00:00:45

important building blocks for writing

00:00:46 --> 00:00:48

good stories or good books for children. So

00:00:49 --> 00:00:52

today's session is going to be about the

00:00:52 --> 00:00:52

what.

00:00:53 --> 00:00:56

What are you going to write about? Now

00:00:56 --> 00:00:57

before I continue,

00:00:57 --> 00:01:00

I'd like to just make clear that I

00:01:00 --> 00:01:03

do have a specific and special interest.

00:01:03 --> 00:01:05

I am on a mission to create

00:01:06 --> 00:01:08

222 Muslim authors

00:01:08 --> 00:01:10

by the end of the year. And to

00:01:10 --> 00:01:13

be honest, children's authors are, masha'Allah, the easiest

00:01:13 --> 00:01:15

authors to work with, and they get the

00:01:15 --> 00:01:16

most success, masha'Allah.

00:01:16 --> 00:01:19

So with that being said, let's focus now

00:01:19 --> 00:01:22

on the what of your children's story. Yes.

00:01:22 --> 00:01:25

You. We're gonna get started to work right

00:01:25 --> 00:01:25

away.

00:01:26 --> 00:01:27

So what do I mean by the what?

00:01:28 --> 00:01:29

The what is,

00:01:29 --> 00:01:31

what are you going to write about?

00:01:32 --> 00:01:34

There is a plethora

00:01:34 --> 00:01:37

of options when it comes to topics to

00:01:37 --> 00:01:39

write about. So let me break it down

00:01:39 --> 00:01:41

for you so that you can start thinking

00:01:41 --> 00:01:44

right now, you know, what comes to mind,

00:01:44 --> 00:01:48

what possibilities are there in your experience, in

00:01:48 --> 00:01:50

your, you know, in your in your area

00:01:50 --> 00:01:51

right now that you could potentially

00:01:52 --> 00:01:54

explore in a book for children.

00:01:55 --> 00:01:56

So

00:01:56 --> 00:01:57

the most common

00:01:58 --> 00:02:00

way that most of us get into writing

00:02:00 --> 00:02:02

for children is when we come up with

00:02:02 --> 00:02:05

a story idea. K? It could be inspired

00:02:05 --> 00:02:07

by our children and their shenanigans

00:02:07 --> 00:02:09

or something that we've seen, you know, out

00:02:09 --> 00:02:12

there in the street or even just something

00:02:12 --> 00:02:14

that we imagine or we dream.

00:02:14 --> 00:02:16

So starting with a story is a great

00:02:16 --> 00:02:18

place to start. If you have a story

00:02:18 --> 00:02:19

in mind,

00:02:19 --> 00:02:21

start writing it. Now

00:02:21 --> 00:02:23

it's not just stories that can work as

00:02:23 --> 00:02:25

children's books. You can also

00:02:26 --> 00:02:27

pull from

00:02:27 --> 00:02:30

other aspects of your life in order to

00:02:30 --> 00:02:32

create something especially for children. So let's look

00:02:32 --> 00:02:33

at experiences.

00:02:35 --> 00:02:36

Many of us have had all sorts of

00:02:36 --> 00:02:39

experiences as children, teens, and adults

00:02:39 --> 00:02:40

that could

00:02:40 --> 00:02:41

very neatly

00:02:42 --> 00:02:43

be retold

00:02:43 --> 00:02:45

in a way that is engaging for children.

00:02:46 --> 00:02:48

An example of this, I would say, is

00:02:48 --> 00:02:50

my book, Going to Mecca. Going to Mecca

00:02:50 --> 00:02:53

was inspired by my journey on Hajj, and

00:02:53 --> 00:02:55

that was my experience. Right? I experienced the

00:02:55 --> 00:02:57

Hajj, and I decided that

00:02:57 --> 00:02:59

let me try and take this experience and

00:02:59 --> 00:03:01

what I took from the experience, what I

00:03:01 --> 00:03:03

learned, and turn it into a book for

00:03:03 --> 00:03:05

children. And, alhamdulillah,

00:03:05 --> 00:03:07

that worked very, very well.

00:03:07 --> 00:03:09

The other thing that can be

00:03:10 --> 00:03:13

good raw material for a children's book is

00:03:13 --> 00:03:14

your passions.

00:03:14 --> 00:03:16

What are you excited about? What are you

00:03:16 --> 00:03:17

enthusiastic

00:03:17 --> 00:03:18

about? What do you love?

00:03:19 --> 00:03:21

Any one of your passions could be turned

00:03:21 --> 00:03:24

into something really engaging and beautiful for children.

00:03:24 --> 00:03:27

A lot of the time because you are

00:03:27 --> 00:03:29

excited by it, you're enthusiastic by it, and

00:03:29 --> 00:03:30

that will come through.

00:03:31 --> 00:03:33

So if you have, like I did,

00:03:33 --> 00:03:35

a passion for Islamic art and architecture and

00:03:35 --> 00:03:36

history,

00:03:37 --> 00:03:40

you could take that and craft a story

00:03:40 --> 00:03:40

around that.

00:03:41 --> 00:03:41

Alhamdulillah,

00:03:42 --> 00:03:44

I was very blessed to be able to

00:03:44 --> 00:03:46

do that in my book, Journey Through Islamic

00:03:46 --> 00:03:48

Art. It was born from a passion of

00:03:48 --> 00:03:51

mine. And the more I delved into this

00:03:51 --> 00:03:53

passion and understood and learned more about the

00:03:53 --> 00:03:56

different art styles and the different arenas of

00:03:56 --> 00:03:57

Islamic history,

00:03:58 --> 00:04:01

the story came took shape. And, Alhamdulillah, it

00:04:01 --> 00:04:03

was published as journey through Islamic art as

00:04:03 --> 00:04:05

a result of my passion.

00:04:05 --> 00:04:07

Now another thing that you can do and

00:04:07 --> 00:04:10

what you can draw on for a children's

00:04:10 --> 00:04:12

book is your own expertise.

00:04:13 --> 00:04:15

Do you know something? Do you know how

00:04:15 --> 00:04:18

to do something? Are you good at explaining

00:04:18 --> 00:04:18

something?

00:04:18 --> 00:04:21

Because any of those could be used as

00:04:21 --> 00:04:24

the basis of a children's story of a

00:04:24 --> 00:04:27

children's book. So for example, if you are

00:04:27 --> 00:04:29

a really great cook or you're and this

00:04:29 --> 00:04:31

is I'm now basing this on some of

00:04:31 --> 00:04:33

my clients' own books. One of our clients,

00:04:34 --> 00:04:36

her expertise was all to do with recycling,

00:04:37 --> 00:04:37

upcycling.

00:04:38 --> 00:04:39

It was something that she did in her

00:04:39 --> 00:04:41

own life, something she taught her children, something

00:04:41 --> 00:04:43

she used to share with the children in

00:04:43 --> 00:04:44

her neighborhood.

00:04:44 --> 00:04:47

She ended up writing a book called Growing

00:04:47 --> 00:04:49

from Kitchen Scraps, and it was published

00:04:50 --> 00:04:50

in Malaysia.

00:04:51 --> 00:04:52

You may think to yourself,

00:04:53 --> 00:04:55

recycling, upcycling, like, what's that got to do

00:04:55 --> 00:04:57

with children? But, of course,

00:04:57 --> 00:05:00

anything that you know how to do that

00:05:00 --> 00:05:02

you could potentially teach children how to do

00:05:02 --> 00:05:05

could be the basis of a fantastic children's

00:05:05 --> 00:05:06

book. So

00:05:07 --> 00:05:10

look around you. Look around you. Think of

00:05:10 --> 00:05:12

what stories have come to mind for you,

00:05:12 --> 00:05:12

what

00:05:13 --> 00:05:15

expertise, what passions, what experiences

00:05:16 --> 00:05:18

you have that you'd like to pass on

00:05:19 --> 00:05:21

to the next generation. And this is the

00:05:21 --> 00:05:22

key point. Because

00:05:23 --> 00:05:24

as far as I'm concerned,

00:05:25 --> 00:05:27

your children's book is your love letter to

00:05:27 --> 00:05:28

the next generation.

00:05:29 --> 00:05:30

There are children, Insha'Allah,

00:05:30 --> 00:05:33

who will grow up reading your book, who

00:05:33 --> 00:05:35

will grow up loving your book, asking their

00:05:35 --> 00:05:37

parents to read your book to them again

00:05:37 --> 00:05:39

and again and again. It will become part

00:05:39 --> 00:05:41

of their childhood memories and part of who

00:05:41 --> 00:05:42

they are.

00:05:43 --> 00:05:44

So think carefully now.

00:05:44 --> 00:05:46

What would you like to share with the

00:05:46 --> 00:05:47

next generation?

00:05:47 --> 00:05:50

What's the message on your heart that you

00:05:50 --> 00:05:52

would like to be able to share

00:05:52 --> 00:05:54

with the next generation coming up,

00:05:55 --> 00:05:56

earning

00:05:56 --> 00:05:59

sadaqa jariyah along the way and helping us

00:05:59 --> 00:06:02

to build and broaden the range of titles

00:06:02 --> 00:06:03

available for Muslim children.

00:06:04 --> 00:06:06

I hope that gave you some food for

00:06:06 --> 00:06:08

thought. If it did, I'm glad.

00:06:09 --> 00:06:11

Make sure that you follow the series. I

00:06:11 --> 00:06:13

will be sharing a new tip in every

00:06:13 --> 00:06:16

video and I want you to engage. So

00:06:16 --> 00:06:17

let me know in the comments

00:06:18 --> 00:06:21

what was your takeaway from today. And if

00:06:21 --> 00:06:23

you have a book idea, you're not sure

00:06:23 --> 00:06:25

how to develop, and you'd like my help,

00:06:25 --> 00:06:27

feel free to go to naimarobert.com/services

00:06:29 --> 00:06:31

and send me an application.

00:06:31 --> 00:06:33

Tell me more about your book. Tell me

00:06:33 --> 00:06:35

more about yourself, and let's see if we're

00:06:35 --> 00:06:37

a fit to work together. As I said,

00:06:38 --> 00:06:40

I do have a personal interest, and that

00:06:40 --> 00:06:43

is my goal of helping create 222

00:06:44 --> 00:06:46

Muslim authors, and I'd love for you to

00:06:46 --> 00:06:48

be one of them. So until the next

00:06:48 --> 00:06:48

video,

00:06:49 --> 00:06:51

I'll see you insha Allah. Go out there

00:06:51 --> 00:06:52

and look for those ideas.
