that the recognition

the solace, the realization,

but there's parts of you that are

and that they're there, then we can think

about how do we fuel them

and how do they exist in kind of

certain things

but most of us get exposed to understanding

how people's hearts work

life regardless of our faith. Then when you

get to, like, middle school or high school

or even elementary school or definitely

college, nobody's ever telling you, like, this is

how, like, people's feelings function or this is

how people's minds work.

bookstore

experiencing the world a little bit differently. Doesn't

mean that you're in a competition with anybody

else. Right? There's a young woman in our

community who reached out to me. She said

she started a new consulting job. So first

Ramadan,

then she's traveling so much. And she said,

you know, I don't really get it. Like,

00:19:19 --> 00:19:20

I had all these goals and now I'm

00:19:20 --> 00:19:22

just tired and I'm all over the country

00:19:22 --> 00:19:24

and I couldn't do this the way that

00:19:24 --> 00:19:26

I've done before and I couldn't do that

00:19:26 --> 00:19:28

the way that I've done before. And her

00:19:28 --> 00:19:30

end result was in a place of self

00:19:30 --> 00:19:30

deprecation

00:19:31 --> 00:19:33

where she said, you know,

00:19:33 --> 00:19:36

am I gonna somehow be devoid

00:19:36 --> 00:19:37

of, like,

00:19:37 --> 00:19:39

connecting to God, or is this indicative that

00:19:39 --> 00:19:41

I have, like, a weak relationship with God?

So my response to her was like, look.

Everything changes. Right? Ramadan is not for me

what it was when I was single as

it was after I got married, as it

was after I had kids.

It's not the same after my parents got

elderly and they're ill. It's not the same

as when we had a community

that literally had this many people in it,

and now it has like a 1000 fold

00:20:04 --> 00:20:06

over this many people. Right? This is a

10, 12,000 person community.

Everything changes experientially

as life changes and there's adaptation and there's

malleability.

The one thing that does not change is

God.

And

God why we talked about God in the

very first class before we talked about anything

else because everything goes back to God.

And so God does not change

so too like God's mercy does not change,

of yourself

that get rooted in a sense that, like,

maybe this religion is too tough for me.

Maybe the religion is too hard for me.

As opposed to not seeing the religion as

something that's just about what is formulaic or

just practice alone,

but it synergizes with a theology

that's very robust

as well as with

a sense of ethics and values. They're not

seen separate from each other. You get what

So if we were to think about us

in terms of what Islam posits is a

framework of the self

a mechanism to get you into another worldly

exists within you.

Some of it is rooted in the physical

sense of things.

So your spiritual heart has an intrinsic link

to your physical heart.

And the way we're even constructed

in terms of our beings,

you have like a higher self and a

lower self.

But Ramadan

is about learning how to make decisions from

your mind and your heart, not from your

stomach and your sexual organs,

and getting to a place where there's a

00:26:21 --> 00:26:23

presence of your literal higher self and not

00:26:23 --> 00:26:26

your lower self in choices that you make.

00:26:27 --> 00:26:28

What ends up happening

00:26:28 --> 00:26:31

is that it's not any one of these

00:26:31 --> 00:26:34

things, but it's all of these things

00:26:34 --> 00:26:35

that

get cultivated in the course of a practice

like Ramadan.

But if there's not a deliberate recognition that

these are things that make me who I

am,

it doesn't mean that just like you don't

know how the water is refreshing you fully

00:26:52 --> 00:26:54

and hydrating you and nourishing you that you're

00:26:54 --> 00:26:56

not benefiting from drinking the water,

00:26:57 --> 00:26:57

right?

00:26:58 --> 00:26:59

When you eat your food

00:27:00 --> 00:27:03

and it's giving you energy and maybe some

00:27:03 --> 00:27:06

of you could but most of us probably

00:27:06 --> 00:27:08

could not. I can't tell you like how

it's functioning

00:27:09 --> 00:27:12

on a physiological level, the food, but it's

00:27:12 --> 00:27:13

doing something for me.

Similarly,

the practice is doing something for you, but

not being aware of these other parts of

00:27:22 --> 00:27:24

what make you you is going to make

it a lot easier to get to a

place where the only thing that you pay

00:27:29 --> 00:27:31

attention to is what is most apparent

00:27:32 --> 00:27:34

and that's what's happening here in terms of

just the external

00:27:36 --> 00:27:39

whereas there's so much more to you that's

00:27:39 --> 00:27:40

in here. Do you know what I mean?

Like when you talk about values,

Where would values exist

in a person? Are they gonna exist in

their physical body?

Where would you say if you had to

guess or you would just think for yourself,

a non animate

entity having a value versus like an individual

person having a value.

When you talk about the ability to realize

something, to have awareness

right?

Do you think it's just your physical body

that can see how beautiful a flower is,

right? What part of you is able to

determine what is beauty?

And understanding this at a foundational level when

get to a place

like what is innately beautiful

And what is categorically

ugly as being ugly.

So we're not in a place where we

validate and justify like racism. It's always terrible.

Inequity, oppression, these kinds of things. And Ramadan

is given to its practitioner. Not so they

just learn how to fast, but the fast

brings them to

something. And where most of what we spend

our year on is just the feeding of

our stomach,

now it's about hey feed like the other

stuff.

Get what's more important to you to be

what is in control. And this is not

about like degrading anybody's way of life or

being in a place where you live in

opposition

00:30:09 --> 00:30:11

to any other person in existence,

but would you rather be a person who

00:30:14 --> 00:30:15

makes a decision

through their heart or at their heart's expense?

Would you rather be a person who makes

decisions through their heart and their mind or

through their stomach and their

organs alone.

And it becomes the basis of a lot

of what we see this challenging in the

00:30:31 --> 00:30:35

world where people can glorify but also validate

00:30:36 --> 00:30:38

conflict and war. They can justify

all kinds of things that are deeply problematic.

Why somebody could have literally

00:30:44 --> 00:30:46

a 1,000 times greater salary

00:30:47 --> 00:30:49

than somebody who's doing most of the work

00:30:49 --> 00:30:51

day in and day out and won't get

00:30:51 --> 00:30:52

paid

00:30:52 --> 00:30:56

less than minimum wage which isn't even livable

00:30:56 --> 00:30:56

wage

00:30:57 --> 00:30:58

if they don't show up to work that

00:30:58 --> 00:30:59

day, right?

Those are decisions that are made from here

not from up here.

Where I can intellectualize

why I have more than I need

but can continue to have more of it

on just a purely theoretical level.

But when it comes down to it and

you're out there living in the world,

which part of you is what you're really
