The root of the word is ʾadhina أَذِنَ meaning “to listen, to hear, be informed about”. Another derivative of this word is ʾudhun (أُذُن), meaning “ear”.

The muezzin (Arabic: مُؤَذِّن‎ muʾaḏḏin) is the person who recites the Azan, generally from the mosque. A professional is chosen for his good character, voice and skills to serve at the mosque.

{ʾAllāhu ʾakbar}
ٱللَّٰهُ أَكْبَرُ

I bear witness that there is no deity but God (2x)
{ʾašhadu ʾan lā ʾilāha ʾillā -llāhu}
أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا ٱللَّٰهُ

I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of God (2x)
{ʾašhadu ʾanna Muḥammadan rasūlu -llāhi}
أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ ٱللَّٰهِ

Hasten to the prayer (Salah) (2x)
{ḥayya ʿalā ṣ-ṣalāhti}
حَيَّ عَلَى ٱلصَّلَاةِ

Hasten to the salvation (2x)
{ḥayya ʿalā l-falāḥi}
حَيَّ عَلَى ٱلْفَلَاحِ

[Fajr Prayer only]
Prayer is better than sleep (2x)
{aṣ-ṣalātu khayrun mina n-nawmi}
ٱلصَّلَاةُ خَيْرٌ مِنَ ٱلنَّوْمِ

ٱللَّٰهُ أَكْبَرُ

{ʾAllāhu ʾakbaru}

لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا ٱللَّٰهُ
