Abdul Nasir Jangda – Stories of the Prophets #18 The Battle of Badr

Abdul Nasir Jangda
AI: Summary © The history of the Badr victory was a intimidation of Muslims to back down, leading to a strategy of intercepting the caravan and putting a hurt on their enemy. The Westerners were desperate to win the fight, but were not successful. The Islamist plan to destroy the people and end suffering was successful, but they were outflanked by police and police officers were eventually outflanked by large contingent of asylum seekers and Muslims. The importance of understanding and cooperation between Muslims of different cultures is emphasized, and resolving issues with the Islam community is a blessing for those who have not yet experienced it.

Today is the

00:00:15 --> 00:00:17

17th or today was the 17th

00:00:18 --> 00:00:20

day, 17th fast

00:00:20 --> 00:00:21

of the month of Ramadan.

00:00:23 --> 00:00:24

And the 17th

00:00:24 --> 00:00:27

day or 17th fast of Ramadan

00:00:28 --> 00:00:28

is

00:00:29 --> 00:00:31

something that holds a very special place

00:00:32 --> 00:00:33

in Islamic history

00:00:34 --> 00:00:34

because

00:00:35 --> 00:00:38

it is the day on which the battle

00:00:38 --> 00:00:39

of Badr occurred.

00:00:40 --> 00:00:41

We've been going

00:00:42 --> 00:00:43

through in Ramadan here

00:00:44 --> 00:00:46

our series on the stories of the prophets

00:00:46 --> 00:00:46

in the Quran.

00:00:47 --> 00:00:49

And insha Allah we're continuing with

00:00:50 --> 00:00:53

that. However, I'm going to talk about one

00:00:53 --> 00:00:54

of the stories

00:00:55 --> 00:00:56

in the Quran

00:00:57 --> 00:00:59

from the life of the prophet sallallahu alaihi

00:00:59 --> 00:00:59

wasallam.

00:01:00 --> 00:01:01

Are we talking about

00:01:01 --> 00:01:03

the events of the life of the prophet

00:01:03 --> 00:01:05

sallallahu alaihi wasallam that are spoken about in

00:01:05 --> 00:01:07

the Quran towards the end of the month.

00:01:07 --> 00:01:09

But I felt that it was beneficial

00:01:10 --> 00:01:12

to talk about this particular event

00:01:13 --> 00:01:15

from the life of Muhammadur Rasulullah

00:01:16 --> 00:01:19

that is mentioned within the Quran today.

00:01:19 --> 00:01:21

Even if even if it be out of

00:01:21 --> 00:01:22

sequence

00:01:22 --> 00:01:24

because it is the day of the battle

00:01:24 --> 00:01:24

of Badr.

00:01:26 --> 00:01:28

And I'm not going to go into a

00:01:28 --> 00:01:29

detailed historical,

00:01:30 --> 00:01:31

discussion,

00:01:32 --> 00:01:35

a recounting of events leading to Badr, during

00:01:35 --> 00:01:36

Badr, after Badr

00:01:37 --> 00:01:39

because that would take a lot of time,

00:01:39 --> 00:01:41

4 or 5 hours at the very least.

00:01:42 --> 00:01:43

We have a lot of detail. We have

00:01:43 --> 00:01:45

a lot of knowledge about the battle of

00:01:45 --> 00:01:47

Badr. 100 and 100 of pages have been

00:01:47 --> 00:01:50

written within the books of Sira, the books

00:01:50 --> 00:01:52

of Islamic history, prophetic biography

00:01:53 --> 00:01:54

on the battle of Badr.

00:01:54 --> 00:01:56

But I would like to just outline

00:01:57 --> 00:01:59

very quickly exactly what it is when we're

00:01:59 --> 00:02:01

talking about the battle of Badr.

00:02:02 --> 00:02:03

The battle of Badr

00:02:03 --> 00:02:05

occurred in the 2nd

00:02:05 --> 00:02:06

year of hijrah.

00:02:07 --> 00:02:10

That's the 2nd year of the Prophet sallallahu

00:02:10 --> 00:02:11

alaihi wa sallam's residence in Madinah.

00:02:12 --> 00:02:13

When he made the hijrah and he came

00:02:13 --> 00:02:14

to Madinah,

00:02:14 --> 00:02:16

the 2nd year the battle of Badr happened.

00:02:16 --> 00:02:19

The battle of Badr happened in the month

00:02:19 --> 00:02:20

of Ramadan.

00:02:20 --> 00:02:22

The battle was on 17th

00:02:23 --> 00:02:24

day of the month of Ramadan.

00:02:25 --> 00:02:26

The battle

00:02:27 --> 00:02:29

of Badr is called that

00:02:29 --> 00:02:32

Badr was is the name of a place.

00:02:32 --> 00:02:34

That place is there till today and it's

00:02:34 --> 00:02:35

called

00:02:36 --> 00:02:38

It's the city of Badr, the area of

00:02:38 --> 00:02:39

Badr.

00:02:39 --> 00:02:40

And

00:02:41 --> 00:02:44

that region, that area, even back then 1400

00:02:44 --> 00:02:47

years ago was also called Badr. Badr is

00:02:47 --> 00:02:49

the word in the Arabic language, which refers

00:02:49 --> 00:02:50

to the full moon.

00:02:51 --> 00:02:53

And there's lots of theories as to why

00:02:53 --> 00:02:55

that area was called, but the most,

00:02:56 --> 00:02:57

the predominant theory

00:02:58 --> 00:03:01

is that there were these big large wells

00:03:01 --> 00:03:03

out there. And when the full moon it

00:03:03 --> 00:03:05

would be the night of the full moon,

00:03:05 --> 00:03:07

the whole full moon would reflect inside the

00:03:07 --> 00:03:09

well. Hence, it got the name

00:03:09 --> 00:03:10

Badr.

00:03:11 --> 00:03:12

Nonetheless, this place

00:03:13 --> 00:03:13

Al Badr

00:03:14 --> 00:03:15

is about a day and a half or

00:03:15 --> 00:03:18

2 days worth of journey on foot

00:03:19 --> 00:03:21

outside of Medina, away from the city of

00:03:21 --> 00:03:21

Medina.

00:03:22 --> 00:03:23

And

00:03:23 --> 00:03:26

what transpired at this time, the Muslims have

00:03:26 --> 00:03:28

been living in Madinah for about a year

00:03:28 --> 00:03:29

and a half. And

00:03:30 --> 00:03:32

while they've been living here for a year

00:03:32 --> 00:03:33

and a half,

00:03:33 --> 00:03:36

very happy to have a home, very happy

00:03:36 --> 00:03:37

to have a community,

00:03:37 --> 00:03:39

very happy to have a Masjid where they

00:03:39 --> 00:03:41

can pray freely and safely.

00:03:42 --> 00:03:43

The Quraysh

00:03:44 --> 00:03:45

of Mecca

00:03:45 --> 00:03:48

are not happy with this situation. They are

00:03:48 --> 00:03:50

not satisfied with this arrangement,

00:03:50 --> 00:03:53

but they resent the fact and the idea

00:03:53 --> 00:03:55

that these people believed

00:03:55 --> 00:03:56

and that these people

00:03:58 --> 00:03:59

did not back down,

00:03:59 --> 00:04:02

that they remained rebellious to our ways, quote,

00:04:02 --> 00:04:03

unquote.

00:04:04 --> 00:04:06

And not only that, but they went over

00:04:06 --> 00:04:06

there.

00:04:07 --> 00:04:09

And now their community is growing.

00:04:10 --> 00:04:11

Because

00:04:12 --> 00:04:15

Islam started to grow very rapidly

00:04:16 --> 00:04:17

when they arrived in Medina.

00:04:18 --> 00:04:21

There were people, dozens of people accepting Islam

00:04:21 --> 00:04:24

every week and eventually every day.

00:04:24 --> 00:04:27

The community was doubling in number every few

00:04:27 --> 00:04:27

months.

00:04:29 --> 00:04:31

And so they resented this fact. And at

00:04:31 --> 00:04:33

some level, they feared it.

00:04:33 --> 00:04:35

And so they were not satisfied with this.

00:04:35 --> 00:04:37

So they started launching attacks

00:04:38 --> 00:04:38

against the Muslims.

00:04:39 --> 00:04:41

There were about a half a dozen occasions

00:04:42 --> 00:04:45

where the Makkan sent a cavalry or a

00:04:45 --> 00:04:46

small unit, a battalion

00:04:47 --> 00:04:49

to come right outside of Madinah to intimidate

00:04:49 --> 00:04:50

the Muslims.

00:04:51 --> 00:04:51

And the prophet

00:04:52 --> 00:04:53

was forced

00:04:53 --> 00:04:55

to rally together some of the companions

00:04:56 --> 00:04:59

and send them out to go and stand

00:05:00 --> 00:05:01

across from them

00:05:01 --> 00:05:03

to at least make a show of force

00:05:03 --> 00:05:05

and let them know we're not afraid of

00:05:05 --> 00:05:07

you. We're not going to back down.

00:05:08 --> 00:05:10

The fighting never occurred. A few arrows were

00:05:10 --> 00:05:11

launched,

00:05:11 --> 00:05:13

but that was about it. And then they

00:05:13 --> 00:05:14

would turn around and leave.

00:05:15 --> 00:05:16

But they hadn't stopped at that. They had

00:05:16 --> 00:05:18

even conducted raids.

00:05:19 --> 00:05:20

They came and they raided one of the

00:05:20 --> 00:05:22

gardens that belonged to the Muslims

00:05:22 --> 00:05:24

on the outskirts of the city of Madinah.

00:05:25 --> 00:05:27

And they burned the garden down, and somebody

00:05:27 --> 00:05:29

ended up dying inside of the garden.

00:05:29 --> 00:05:31

So they were constantly

00:05:32 --> 00:05:33

engaged in this intimidation

00:05:34 --> 00:05:36

of the Muslims and not letting them live

00:05:36 --> 00:05:37

in peace.

00:05:38 --> 00:05:41

The prophet sallallahu alaihi wasallam, he had a

00:05:41 --> 00:05:41

strategy

00:05:42 --> 00:05:43

to try to curb

00:05:44 --> 00:05:46

this kind of bullying behavior

00:05:46 --> 00:05:48

on the part of the Quraysh. And that

00:05:48 --> 00:05:51

strategy was that the prophet sallallahu alaihi wa

00:05:51 --> 00:05:54

sallam said, we're going to start intercepting their

00:05:54 --> 00:05:55

trade caravans.

00:05:56 --> 00:05:58

Medina is to the north of Mecca. Medina

00:05:58 --> 00:06:00

is on the route on the way to

00:06:01 --> 00:06:02

what was referred to in those in those

00:06:02 --> 00:06:04

times as Biladusham,

00:06:05 --> 00:06:06

the Levant.

00:06:06 --> 00:06:08

Syria, Palestine,

00:06:08 --> 00:06:11

Jordan, these areas. And in fact, the the

00:06:12 --> 00:06:14

the Quraysh, when they used to go for

00:06:14 --> 00:06:17

trade, their primary destination was actually Palestine.

00:06:18 --> 00:06:19

They would go to Al Quds. They would

00:06:19 --> 00:06:21

even go as far as as far as

00:06:21 --> 00:06:22

Gaza.

00:06:22 --> 00:06:25

The great grandfather of the prophet salallahu alaihi

00:06:25 --> 00:06:26

wa sallam, Hashim,

00:06:27 --> 00:06:27

he

00:06:28 --> 00:06:30

died actually on one of these trade care

00:06:30 --> 00:06:32

vans and he's buried in Gaza.

00:06:33 --> 00:06:33

And so

00:06:34 --> 00:06:36

they used to have to pass by Madira.

00:06:36 --> 00:06:38

So the prophet salallahu alaihi wasalam said, we're

00:06:38 --> 00:06:39

gonna make them regret

00:06:39 --> 00:06:41

bullying us constantly,

00:06:41 --> 00:06:43

intimidating us nonstop.

00:06:44 --> 00:06:46

We're going to start intercepting their caravans.

00:06:47 --> 00:06:49

And their economy

00:06:49 --> 00:06:50

depends on these caravans.

00:06:51 --> 00:06:53

So then all of a sudden,

00:06:53 --> 00:06:55

when it hurts their wallets,

00:06:56 --> 00:06:58

then that's the only language they speak.

00:06:59 --> 00:07:01

So they had this tactic, and they were

00:07:01 --> 00:07:03

successful a couple of times. And then they

00:07:03 --> 00:07:05

heard the news that there was a very,

00:07:05 --> 00:07:06

very large

00:07:07 --> 00:07:09

caravan on its way.

00:07:10 --> 00:07:12

And the Muslims

00:07:12 --> 00:07:14

the prophet salallahu alaihi wasalam told the Muslims,

00:07:14 --> 00:07:17

let's intercept this caravan. They tried to intercept

00:07:17 --> 00:07:19

it on its way to a sham,

00:07:20 --> 00:07:21

but they missed it. And

00:07:24 --> 00:07:26

when Abu Sufyan, who was leading the caravan,

00:07:26 --> 00:07:27

one of the leaders of Quraysh,

00:07:28 --> 00:07:30

when he realized they tried to intercept us,

00:07:31 --> 00:07:32

he knew that, okay, they're going to try

00:07:32 --> 00:07:34

to catch us on the way back.

00:07:34 --> 00:07:36

So he was already worried and concerned. He

00:07:36 --> 00:07:38

sent the word ahead to Mecca,

00:07:38 --> 00:07:40

and he said they're going to

00:07:40 --> 00:07:41

catch us.

00:07:42 --> 00:07:44

They were already preparing an army in Mecca.

00:07:45 --> 00:07:47

So he said, deploy the army.

00:07:48 --> 00:07:49

And then while he was on his way

00:07:49 --> 00:07:52

back, he deliberately took a very different unexpected

00:07:53 --> 00:07:53

route.

00:07:54 --> 00:07:56

And he was able to evade

00:07:58 --> 00:07:59

the Muslims.

00:08:00 --> 00:08:01

And when the Muslims realized

00:08:02 --> 00:08:04

that, oh, we missed the caravan again.

00:08:06 --> 00:08:08

Right as they were thinking about, okay, I

00:08:08 --> 00:08:10

guess we'll just go back home.

00:08:11 --> 00:08:13

So these this was a group of 313

00:08:13 --> 00:08:14

Muslims.

00:08:15 --> 00:08:16

They came primarily

00:08:17 --> 00:08:20

to raid a caravan, not fight a war,

00:08:20 --> 00:08:21

not fight a battle.

00:08:22 --> 00:08:24

And when they realized, well, the caravan slipped

00:08:24 --> 00:08:26

away from us again,

00:08:26 --> 00:08:28

I guess we'll go back home

00:08:29 --> 00:08:30

next time.

00:08:32 --> 00:08:33

But then they got the news from some

00:08:33 --> 00:08:34

of their scouts.

00:08:37 --> 00:08:39

There's a huge army,

00:08:40 --> 00:08:42

like a day, a day and a half's

00:08:42 --> 00:08:42

journey away.

00:08:44 --> 00:08:46

And then as they started gathering the intel,

00:08:47 --> 00:08:49

they realized they were 313.

00:08:50 --> 00:08:52

The army that was coming was

00:08:52 --> 00:08:53

about a1000.

00:08:55 --> 00:08:56

They them 3 to 1.

00:08:57 --> 00:08:59

While they were here to stop a caravan,

00:09:00 --> 00:09:01

a trade caravan,

00:09:01 --> 00:09:03

so they were equipped accordingly.

00:09:04 --> 00:09:05

The other

00:09:05 --> 00:09:06

army

00:09:06 --> 00:09:09

is equipped like an army with armor and

00:09:09 --> 00:09:11

artillery and weapons and the like.

00:09:13 --> 00:09:14

While the Muslims

00:09:15 --> 00:09:16

were very humble

00:09:17 --> 00:09:19

and largely in a state of poverty

00:09:19 --> 00:09:22

because it was already a small, poor farm

00:09:22 --> 00:09:23

town, Medina.

00:09:23 --> 00:09:26

And then you infused into it

00:09:27 --> 00:09:28

100 of

00:09:28 --> 00:09:29

refugees,

00:09:30 --> 00:09:31

asylum seekers,

00:09:32 --> 00:09:33

Muslims, So

00:09:35 --> 00:09:37

poor people became even more poor

00:09:37 --> 00:09:39

cause they shared everything half and half.

00:09:41 --> 00:09:42

And so the Muslims

00:09:43 --> 00:09:46

barely have food, barely have clothes, barely have

00:09:46 --> 00:09:47

some of them didn't have shoes on their

00:09:47 --> 00:09:50

feet. They were holding sticks in their hands.

00:09:50 --> 00:09:52

And the other army that outnumbers them 3

00:09:52 --> 00:09:54

to 1 is armed from head to toe.

00:09:55 --> 00:09:57

They have entire lavish feasts

00:09:58 --> 00:09:59

that they brought with them.

00:10:01 --> 00:10:01

All of this.

00:10:04 --> 00:10:06

At that point in time, Allah Subhanahu Wa

00:10:06 --> 00:10:08

Ta'ala talks about this in the Quran

00:10:09 --> 00:10:11

that Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala says,

00:10:14 --> 00:10:16

Allah told you 1 of 2 things was

00:10:16 --> 00:10:16

gonna happen.

00:10:17 --> 00:10:18

Either you stop the caravan

00:10:19 --> 00:10:20

and get a payday,

00:10:21 --> 00:10:22

hit the jackpot

00:10:22 --> 00:10:24

while putting a hurt on your enemy. It's

00:10:24 --> 00:10:25

a win win.

00:10:25 --> 00:10:27

Or you might end up in a fight.

00:10:32 --> 00:10:35

And you really, really hoped and wished and

00:10:35 --> 00:10:35

prayed

00:10:36 --> 00:10:38

that it would be the latter. That it

00:10:38 --> 00:10:40

would be the former. Excuse me. That it'd

00:10:40 --> 00:10:42

be the fact that you're gonna intercept the

00:10:42 --> 00:10:44

caravan, put a hurt on your enemy, take

00:10:44 --> 00:10:45

home a payday.

00:10:45 --> 00:10:46

Win win.

00:10:47 --> 00:10:49

You really were wishing you were you

00:10:51 --> 00:10:53

you so desperately wanted it to be that.

00:10:55 --> 00:10:57

Where you read Allahu and you

00:10:59 --> 00:11:01

But lesson number 1 from Badr.

00:11:03 --> 00:11:04

We think all kinds of things

00:11:05 --> 00:11:06

but Allah has a plan.

00:11:08 --> 00:11:11

And Allah's plan is is exactly what happens.

00:11:21 --> 00:11:22

We have a plan, but Allah has a

00:11:22 --> 00:11:25

plan. And Allah's plan is that is what

00:11:25 --> 00:11:26

actually occurs.

00:11:32 --> 00:11:33

And if you're

00:11:34 --> 00:11:35

compliant, obedient

00:11:36 --> 00:11:37

with Allah's

00:11:37 --> 00:11:40

plan, Allah says, I'll take care of you.

00:11:48 --> 00:11:51

And if you defy try to defy Allah's

00:11:51 --> 00:11:52

plan,

00:11:53 --> 00:11:53

Allah says,

00:11:54 --> 00:11:56

I will exhaust you

00:11:57 --> 00:11:58

in the pursuit of your plan.

00:11:59 --> 00:12:01

But guess what? At the end of the

00:12:01 --> 00:12:02

day,

00:12:02 --> 00:12:03

what happens is

00:12:04 --> 00:12:05

Allah's plan.

00:12:06 --> 00:12:08

So Badr is a lesson in that. Allah

00:12:08 --> 00:12:08

said, Allah had

00:12:10 --> 00:12:12

a plan that the truth should be made

00:12:12 --> 00:12:12

clear.

00:12:15 --> 00:12:18

And that the enemies would suffer a defeat.

00:12:19 --> 00:12:21

So the truth could be known.

00:12:22 --> 00:12:24

And the falsehood could be exposed.

00:12:26 --> 00:12:27

Even if they did not want that to

00:12:27 --> 00:12:28

happen.

00:12:28 --> 00:12:30

That is what was going to happen.

00:12:32 --> 00:12:33

So the army showed up

00:12:35 --> 00:12:37

and it was a battle. So lesson number

00:12:37 --> 00:12:38

1, Allah's plan.

00:12:39 --> 00:12:41

Lesson number 2,

00:12:41 --> 00:12:42

we know about the battle.

00:12:44 --> 00:12:45

But do we

00:12:46 --> 00:12:48

remember what happened on the night before the

00:12:48 --> 00:12:48

battle?

00:12:50 --> 00:12:51

The hadith,

00:12:52 --> 00:12:54

the authentic narration tells us

00:12:54 --> 00:12:55

the prophet

00:12:55 --> 00:12:56

they pitched a tent for him

00:13:06 --> 00:13:07

the prophet. It's called

00:13:07 --> 00:13:09

the masjid of the tent.

00:13:10 --> 00:13:11

In Abu Bakr

00:13:11 --> 00:13:12

he

00:13:12 --> 00:13:14

says in the middle of night, I went

00:13:14 --> 00:13:15

to go check on the prophet

00:13:15 --> 00:13:16

just,

00:13:16 --> 00:13:18

you know, make sure he's okay.

00:13:19 --> 00:13:20

And he says, when I walked into the

00:13:20 --> 00:13:22

tent, I saw the prophet on his knees.

00:13:24 --> 00:13:25

And he had his hands

00:13:26 --> 00:13:27

stretched out

00:13:27 --> 00:13:29

over his head. The prophet would normally make

00:13:29 --> 00:13:30

dua like this,

00:13:31 --> 00:13:32

but he had his arms stretched out like

00:13:32 --> 00:13:35

this over his head. And he was crying

00:13:35 --> 00:13:38

so profusely his beard was soaked until his

00:13:38 --> 00:13:40

chest was wet with his tears. And he

00:13:40 --> 00:13:42

had like a shawl on and it had

00:13:42 --> 00:13:44

fallen off of his shoulders onto the ground

00:13:45 --> 00:13:47

and he was insisting and he was crying

00:13:47 --> 00:13:49

and he was saying, oh Allah help us.

00:13:55 --> 00:13:57

Oh Allah, if you allowed these people to

00:13:57 --> 00:13:59

perish tomorrow, there'll be nobody left on this

00:13:59 --> 00:14:01

earth that worship you as you deserve to

00:14:01 --> 00:14:02

be worshiped.

00:14:02 --> 00:14:05

Allah, please help us. Send your aid. Send

00:14:05 --> 00:14:05

your help.

00:14:06 --> 00:14:08

And Abu Bakr picked up the shalom of

00:14:08 --> 00:14:09

the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam and put it

00:14:09 --> 00:14:11

on his shoulders. And then he said, I'm

00:14:11 --> 00:14:13

set to who? I held the Prophet Sallallahu

00:14:13 --> 00:14:16

Alaihi Wasallam until he kind of calm down

00:14:16 --> 00:14:17

a little. And then I said,

00:14:23 --> 00:14:26

Oh, messenger of God, Allah has heard your

00:14:26 --> 00:14:28

prayers and Allah has answered your prayers.

00:14:29 --> 00:14:31

His help is coming. I know it.

00:14:34 --> 00:14:35

And then

00:14:35 --> 00:14:37

when they went out into the battlefield,

00:14:39 --> 00:14:42

then the promise of Allah. Allah's

00:14:43 --> 00:14:44

plan, turn to Allah

00:14:45 --> 00:14:47

and then wait for the promise of Allah.

00:14:47 --> 00:14:49

And Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala tells us what

00:14:49 --> 00:14:50

did the promise of Allah look like?

00:14:55 --> 00:14:58

Allah you at the place of badar even

00:14:58 --> 00:14:59

though you were weak.

00:15:00 --> 00:15:02

You're outnumbered, outmanned, outgunned.

00:15:03 --> 00:15:04

You're weak.

00:15:13 --> 00:15:15

Allah will help you with 3,000

00:15:15 --> 00:15:16

angels

00:15:16 --> 00:15:18

descending from the sky.

00:15:21 --> 00:15:24

If you are patient and conscious of God,

00:15:24 --> 00:15:25

fearful of Allah,

00:15:36 --> 00:15:37

Allah will send

00:15:37 --> 00:15:41

5,000 angels in waves upon waves upon these

00:15:41 --> 00:15:41

people.

00:15:43 --> 00:15:43

And what happened?

00:15:52 --> 00:15:56

Allah sent down his tranquility upon the believers

00:15:57 --> 00:15:59

and they fell asleep standing in the battlefield.

00:15:59 --> 00:16:00

Abdullah bin Masood

00:16:01 --> 00:16:02

he said,

00:16:02 --> 00:16:05

I dropped my sword multiple times in the

00:16:05 --> 00:16:06

battlefield of Badr.

00:16:08 --> 00:16:10

Dropped my sword. What does that mean? Only

00:16:10 --> 00:16:12

2 explanations for that.

00:16:13 --> 00:16:16

Explanation number 1 is not possible. That would

00:16:16 --> 00:16:17

be incompetence.

00:16:19 --> 00:16:22

Explanation number 2 is Allah made them drowsy.

00:16:23 --> 00:16:24

And he said,

00:16:25 --> 00:16:26

we fell asleep standing up.

00:16:29 --> 00:16:31

There's a funny little

00:16:31 --> 00:16:32

interaction.

00:16:32 --> 00:16:33

I'll mention it.

00:16:35 --> 00:16:38

Later on decades later when Abdullah bin Masooda

00:16:39 --> 00:16:40

is in Kufa in Iraq.

00:16:41 --> 00:16:42

He's elderly.

00:16:42 --> 00:16:43

He's a teacher

00:16:44 --> 00:16:45

and he's teaching people. A

00:16:46 --> 00:16:47

young man

00:16:47 --> 00:16:48

sitting in the front

00:16:49 --> 00:16:51

started dozing off and falling asleep.

00:16:53 --> 00:16:54

I know something about that. Alright.

00:16:57 --> 00:16:59

So a young man started dozing off and

00:16:59 --> 00:17:00

falling asleep.

00:17:01 --> 00:17:02

So Abdullah ibn Masur

00:17:02 --> 00:17:05

said, hey, what are you doing? Wake up.

00:17:06 --> 00:17:08

We're like studying Quran, Tafsir, or something.

00:17:09 --> 00:17:10

What are you doing sleeping?

00:17:10 --> 00:17:11

And he said,

00:17:12 --> 00:17:14

sorry. Sorry. Sakina Sakina.

00:17:15 --> 00:17:16

I said, Sakina.

00:17:17 --> 00:17:19

Your cousin Sakina? Right?

00:17:19 --> 00:17:21

What's this Sakina? He said, This is not

00:17:21 --> 00:17:22

Sakina.

00:17:23 --> 00:17:23

He said,

00:17:24 --> 00:17:26

sleeping in the halaqa of the dhikr of

00:17:26 --> 00:17:26

Allah,

00:17:27 --> 00:17:28

in

00:17:28 --> 00:17:30

halaqa of 'ilm, this is gaflah.

00:17:31 --> 00:17:34

This is heedlessness. This is negligence, my friend.

00:17:35 --> 00:17:36

He's going to tell you what Sakina is

00:17:36 --> 00:17:38

and then he told them about Badr.

00:17:39 --> 00:17:41

Sakina is sleeping in the battlefield while the

00:17:41 --> 00:17:42

enemy is trying to kill you.

00:17:43 --> 00:17:46

That's a gift from Allah. That's Sakina. The

00:17:46 --> 00:17:48

Sahaba say we opened our eyes, we're rubbing

00:17:48 --> 00:17:49

our eyes like when you wake up from

00:17:49 --> 00:17:50

that

00:17:50 --> 00:17:51

you know

00:17:51 --> 00:17:52

afternoon Ramadan.

00:17:54 --> 00:17:56

Y'all know something about that. Right?

00:17:57 --> 00:18:00

So rubbing our eyes and we looked and

00:18:00 --> 00:18:02

more than 70 of the enemy were dead.

00:18:02 --> 00:18:04

More than 70 of them were tied up

00:18:04 --> 00:18:07

waiting to be taken into custody

00:18:07 --> 00:18:09

and everybody else was on the run.

00:18:09 --> 00:18:11

The battle was over.

00:18:11 --> 00:18:13

That's the help of Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala.

00:18:13 --> 00:18:15

That's the promise of Allah. We believe that.

00:18:15 --> 00:18:17

We hope for that. We wait for that.

00:18:18 --> 00:18:19

We know that it's coming.

00:18:20 --> 00:18:22

And there's one more lesson that I wanna

00:18:22 --> 00:18:24

highlight. And I apologize. I'm going a little

00:18:24 --> 00:18:26

bit here. Forgive me,

00:18:27 --> 00:18:29

but this is very important lesson.

00:18:29 --> 00:18:32

It's not difficult, but it's technical. So please

00:18:32 --> 00:18:33

pay attention.

00:18:33 --> 00:18:35

When the prophet sallallahu alaihi wasall made the

00:18:35 --> 00:18:37

hijrah to Madinah, he came to Madinah. The

00:18:37 --> 00:18:38

uncle of the prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam,

00:18:38 --> 00:18:39

Al Abbas

00:18:39 --> 00:18:42

insisted that there be some terms of understanding

00:18:42 --> 00:18:44

and agreement between the Muslims of Madinah and

00:18:44 --> 00:18:46

the Muslims of Makkah. The Ansar and the

00:18:46 --> 00:18:46

Muwajirun.

00:18:47 --> 00:18:48

One of the terms of the agreement

00:18:50 --> 00:18:53

was that if anybody attacks Medina, we all

00:18:53 --> 00:18:54

defend it together.

00:18:56 --> 00:18:56

Everybody.

00:18:58 --> 00:19:00

But if any of the 2 groups goes

00:19:00 --> 00:19:01

outside of Madinah

00:19:03 --> 00:19:04

to engage in battle

00:19:05 --> 00:19:07

with someone that they have a pre existing

00:19:07 --> 00:19:07

conflict

00:19:08 --> 00:19:10

with, the other group is not obligated to

00:19:10 --> 00:19:12

go and help them. Does that make sense?

00:19:13 --> 00:19:16

Right. If 2 people live together, something goes

00:19:16 --> 00:19:17

wrong in the house, they both repair it.

00:19:18 --> 00:19:20

But if one of their cars gets damaged,

00:19:20 --> 00:19:21

the other person is not responsible.

00:19:22 --> 00:19:23

That was kind of the idea.

00:19:25 --> 00:19:25

The

00:19:26 --> 00:19:28

had a conflict with the Quraysh from before.

00:19:28 --> 00:19:30

They went all the way out to Badr,

00:19:30 --> 00:19:31

and now they're about to engage in a

00:19:31 --> 00:19:32

battle.

00:19:33 --> 00:19:34

The went

00:19:34 --> 00:19:36

with them because they thought they were intercepting

00:19:36 --> 00:19:38

a caravan. But when they found out that

00:19:38 --> 00:19:40

it was gonna be a battle, the prophet

00:19:40 --> 00:19:42

actually conducted a meeting.

00:19:43 --> 00:19:45

And he said, here are the facts.

00:19:47 --> 00:19:48

We did not come here for a battle,

00:19:48 --> 00:19:49

but it is now a battle.

00:19:51 --> 00:19:52

What do you think?

00:19:53 --> 00:19:54

What say you?

00:19:56 --> 00:19:56

And

00:19:57 --> 00:19:58

an Ansari

00:19:58 --> 00:19:59

stood up,

00:19:59 --> 00:20:01

a leader, Saab bin Wa'ad, and he said,

00:20:01 --> 00:20:04

you Rasulullah, we were lost. We were astray.

00:20:04 --> 00:20:06

We were aimless. We were rudderless. We were

00:20:06 --> 00:20:06

hopeless.

00:20:08 --> 00:20:10

You came to us, brought us the light,

00:20:10 --> 00:20:11

iman,

00:20:11 --> 00:20:12

faith, guidance,

00:20:13 --> 00:20:15

showed us the way, showed us how to

00:20:15 --> 00:20:15

live life,

00:20:17 --> 00:20:18

and we would follow you to the ends

00:20:18 --> 00:20:20

of the earth. And if you jumped off

00:20:20 --> 00:20:21

the ends of the earth, we would jump

00:20:21 --> 00:20:24

out after you. We will never leave your

00:20:24 --> 00:20:25

side.

00:20:28 --> 00:20:31

And remember, the Ansar did not have to

00:20:31 --> 00:20:32

participate in the battle. They could have gone

00:20:32 --> 00:20:34

home and they would not have been committing

00:20:34 --> 00:20:35

a sin.

00:20:36 --> 00:20:37

I told you there were 313

00:20:38 --> 00:20:39

people in Badr. Muslims.

00:20:41 --> 00:20:42

Out of 313,

00:20:44 --> 00:20:46

73 were Muhajirun.

00:20:48 --> 00:20:49

How many does that leave?

00:20:50 --> 00:20:51

Very nice.

00:20:55 --> 00:20:57

240. 240 were the Ansar.

00:20:58 --> 00:20:58

240

00:20:59 --> 00:21:00

of the 313

00:21:00 --> 00:21:02

did not have to be there. They did

00:21:02 --> 00:21:04

not have to pick up a sword. They

00:21:04 --> 00:21:05

did not have to fight. They could have

00:21:05 --> 00:21:07

picked packed up their bags and they could

00:21:07 --> 00:21:08

have gone home.

00:21:09 --> 00:21:12

But they said, this is not the moment

00:21:12 --> 00:21:14

where you ask, do I have to do

00:21:14 --> 00:21:16

this? This is the moment where you say,

00:21:16 --> 00:21:17

I get to do this.

00:21:19 --> 00:21:21

And happened in Ramadan.

00:21:22 --> 00:21:25

Ramadan in Ramadan, we need to revive the

00:21:25 --> 00:21:26

spirit of Badr.

00:21:27 --> 00:21:28

Stop asking the question.

00:21:29 --> 00:21:31

I need to stop asking the question, do

00:21:31 --> 00:21:33

I have to do this? Do I have

00:21:33 --> 00:21:33

to pray? Is

00:21:36 --> 00:21:36

Do I

00:21:38 --> 00:21:39

have to? Do I have to? Is that

00:21:39 --> 00:21:41

is it necessary? Is it necessary?

00:21:42 --> 00:21:44

And I need to start asking the question

00:21:44 --> 00:21:45

what more can I do?

00:21:46 --> 00:21:48

And seize the opportunity.

00:21:50 --> 00:21:52

Take the opportunity, the blessing that Allah is

00:21:52 --> 00:21:53

granting us.

00:21:53 --> 00:21:55

And that is the spirit of Badr.

00:21:56 --> 00:21:58

That the Sahaba on that day,

00:21:59 --> 00:22:01

they said Allah has given us an opportunity

00:22:01 --> 00:22:02

whether we have to be here or not,

00:22:02 --> 00:22:03

we are here

00:22:04 --> 00:22:05

and we're not going nowhere.

00:22:06 --> 00:22:08

And that's why the prophet sallallahu alaihi wasallam

00:22:08 --> 00:22:09

said

00:22:10 --> 00:22:10

that

00:22:15 --> 00:22:17

Go live your lives. After Badr, he said

00:22:17 --> 00:22:18

go live your lives

00:22:18 --> 00:22:20

because Allah has already forgiven you.

00:22:24 --> 00:22:26

Allah has given a special mercy to the

00:22:26 --> 00:22:27

people of Badr.

00:22:28 --> 00:22:29

They were chosen people

00:22:29 --> 00:22:30

and they were created

00:22:31 --> 00:22:33

for the sacrifice they made.

00:22:33 --> 00:22:34

May Allah

00:22:34 --> 00:22:37

grant us all the spirit of Badr. May

00:22:37 --> 00:22:37

Allah

00:22:38 --> 00:22:39

allow us to be able to

00:22:40 --> 00:22:42

revive the spirit of Badr in this Ramadan.

00:22:42 --> 00:22:43

And may Allah

00:22:44 --> 00:22:46

grant a victory, the victory of Badr to

00:22:46 --> 00:22:48

our brothers and sisters in Gaza and all

00:22:48 --> 00:22:50

across the world.
