AI: Summary ©
Today, insha Allahu ta'ala, we're going to briefly
go over
a very important list that
Sheikh Hulsam ibn Taymiyyah
discusses and Ibn Qayyim elaborates on. And it
is a simple and easy list. If you
can memorize it, it's good. If you wanna
take quick notes inshallah, that would also be
useful.
Ibn Taymiyyah, after reading the Quran and sunnah,
he has called
10
specific
aspects
that save us from
the adab of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala in
the akhirah.
So this is a list that Ibn Taymiyyah
mentions multiple times, and his student, Ibn Qayyim,
he expounds on.
What are the ten factors
that save a person
from adabu jahannam
that are mentioned in the Quran and Sunnah.
It's a very important list to know.
4 of these
are things we can do right here and
now.
2 of these
are not in our hands, but in our
family, and friends, and relatives.
So that's 4 +2 gives us? Masha'Allah. You're
good at math, so good. Alhamdulillah.
Alhamdulillah.
Another 2
are pure gifts from Allah and His Messenger.
That gives us how much?
8.
And the final 2
are not desirable,
but they are lesser punishments that save us
from the biggest punishment.
There you don't want those last 2, but
it is still better than the alternative, which
is adab of jahannam.
So that's the 10 list. We're gonna go
over it 1 by 1. Is that clear?
That's gonna be our talk for today. And
I hope insha Allah by the end of
this talk,
I will randomly choose any one person,
and what will you be able to do?
Answer
them.
List all of these 10
in tarteeb and order with evidences. No, not
without evidence, but at least
memorize the 10. Good enough? We don't have
time for a detailed discussion of the evidences
and the nuances, but I just wanted to
share with you. So let us begin.
The first four
are
the primary.
This is the crux, this is the main,
because these 4 are in our hands.
Right? The first four are what are the
most important
for us to navigate through.
Number
12
go together.
Tawba and Istighfar.
Tawba
and istighfar.
And these are the most powerful and the
most important and the most necessary.
And that's
why, even in my own khata rastuat, Ramadan,
constantly emphasizing tawbah and istighfar,
because nothing competes with these 2 in terms
of efficiency, in terms of practicality.
And of course, tawba and istighfar,
if you have 2 Venn diagrams, right, you
guys know your Venn diagrams, right, istighfar
is a subset of tawba.
Tawba is broader and within it is istighfar.
So istighfar
properly done automatically necessitates what?
Tawba. But tawba is broader than what? You
remember your Venn diagrams from grade 3, that's
good, alhamdulillah,
jayid.
So tawba
is
generic returning to Allah,
And you don't need to do istighfar
to do tawba.
Because tawba is a state of the heart.
Tawba is literally from returning, taba yatubu.
So you are a sinner,
and you turn your back on the sin
and towards Allah that's dawba.
And that is done by a frame of
mind.
That is done by a niya of the
heart.
That is done by feeling a sense of
regret and remorse, and wanting to live a
better life. That's tawba right there.
Now, in order to perfect tawba, you should
also jump into that little sub circle of
istighfar.
And istighfar
is the act of asking forgiveness.
Istighfar
is the act of asking forgiveness.
Right? And so
you can have tawba without Istighfar because I
guess it's a broader concept. You feel regret
and remorse, that is tawba.
An nada mu tawba is the hadith. Feeling
regret is the essence of tawba. Wanting to
live a better life is the beginning step
zone of tawba.
But the perfection of tawba also requires istighfar.
And so istighfar,
the act of asking Allah's forgiveness,
Astaghfirullah.
Astaghfirullah.
Or anything. Allamanika ghafoor. Allamanika afoon tuhibwal aafaa.
This is all istighfar.
So istighfar is the act of forgiveness. Now
the amazing thing on this list,
1 and 2 are the most powerful,
and 1 and 2 are the easiest,
and 1 and 2 are guaranteed.
There's just no question about it. If you
do tawba, you practice his tighfar, you are
guaranteed
to be saved from jahannam.
The evidences for this are too many. Today's
lecture, we don't have time for evidences. Wamaqanallahuwazibahumwazibahum
yastaghfirun.
Allah will never punish them when they're doing
istighfar. This is in the Quran. Wamakanallamu
adhibahuami astaghfirun. Anyway, today is not the evidences,
today is the concepts. So, number 1, it's
tawba number 2 is istighfar. Right? And you
all understand the concept and the point between
tawba and istighfar.
Number 3.
Number 3.
Of what prevents us from the adab of
Allah, subhanahu wa ta'ala,
is good deeds.
You merely doing good deeds
is going to extinguish your bad deeds.
Even if you have bad deeds, and I
talked about this last khatra I gave right
here with you guys.
Even if you have a habitual
sin,
don't let that stop you from habitual good
deeds.
Even if you have a lifestyle
of addiction,
That's not good. I'm not exonerating. I'm not
giving you the green license, but I'm saying
don't let that lifestyle of addiction
stop you from another alternative
lifestyle of
good.
Good deeds
extinguishes bad deeds.
So make sure you always have good deeds,
good deeds, good deeds. No matter what your
bad deeds are, that's a separate category.
The fact that you're doing good deeds is
in and of itself an exoneration.
It is a point of salvation.
It is a mechanism
to attain forgiveness and to be saved from
Allah's
punishment. That's point number 3.
Number 4
of what saves us from punishment because of
our bad deeds, saves us from adab of
Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala. Number 4,
the tragedies of this dunya,
the pain,
the suffering,
the anxiety,
the stress,
the grief,
those
problems,
if we deal with them in an Islamic
manner,
automatically
it absolves our sins, and it protects us
from the punishment of Allah.
Although we don't want
trouble in life,
when life
becomes troublesome,
we console ourselves
that this is a mechanism of forgiveness.
We don't ask for a difficult life. We
want an easy life. Rabbanatinafidunya
hasana wafil akhdihasana.
But when life becomes difficult,
when we have stress, anxiety,
grief of any nature,
any nature, whether it is health related,
whether it is family related,
whether it is friendship, politics,
Islamophobia,
our brothers and sisters in ghazah, bombs are
falling on them. Life is difficult.
That in and of itself,
if they
are patient, and I talked about patience multiple
times. We don't have time to talk today
about about that. If they accept
that this is happening for a wisdom Allah
knows best, and they must display
a level of stoic sabr,
a level of dignified
response. Allah is in charge, Allah is our
Mawla. Inna lillahuayna laihirajir'un.
You fight it to change it, no problem,
because stoicism
is not
giving up, it's not throwing in the towel.
It is a dignified
response.
You accept
Allah is in charge, and you placate the
pain by looking forward to the ajr of
the akhirah. That's the essence of sabr. The
essence of patience is not that you give
up, you withdraw. The essence of patience, you
link your pain and suffering to the reward
of Allah. So it helps you cope with
the difficulty, and you look forward. There is
light at the end of every dark tunnel.
That's what sabr does. No matter how difficult
life is, there shall be a better time
for you, if not in this world, in
the akhirah. That's point number 4.
And every one of us battles through the
troubles of life. And in battling the troubles
of life, we extinguish the sins that we
have. Allah mentions in the Quran, Innamayawafasabu
alajanbighayi hisab. And Allah says in the Quran,
every musiwa that happens to you, Youafoo an
kathir
Because of it, you are forgiven. And our
prophet sallallahu alaihi wasallam said, Ma'asaba Abdulhammunwala
Hazanunwala,
Hazanunwala,
forgot the next Arabic word. No pain or
grief or anxiety,
Museeba afflicts a person.
Not even a shawka, yusabuhah,
not even a thorn that pricks him, and
he is patient, except that because of it,
Allah
will raise him, darajat, and forgive his sins.
So point number 4 is what?
Tragedy.
Battling tragedy through sabr, the calamities of life,
the stress of life. These 4 are in
our hands.
Correct?
These 4, we are the ones that Allah
has blessed us to have the power to
do that with Allah's help. Okay. That's the
4 in our hands. The 2 in the
hands of family and friends, not in our
hands.
The 2 in other people that can help
us, and what they do can affect us
positively,
to extinguish our sins, to
protect us from Allah's punishment.
So number 5 now, because we're doing the
whole list. Right? So number 5
and number 1 on our list of other
people is
du'a and istighfar of other people for us.
Du'a and istighfar of other people for us.
And the more sincere and specific du'a and
istighfar is, the more powerful it is. And
the more generic, it might be effective but
it is not that powerful. So a generic,
I just made du'a today.
Oh Allah, forgive all the Muslim.
And that is a generic dua.
How many Muslims in the world today?
1,900,000,000. 1,700,000,000. How many have lived in all
14 centuries?
Another 5,000,000,000? I don't know. I'm just guessing.
5, 10,000,000,000? Okay.
15,000,000,000,
10,000,000,000,
and I made one dua for
all of them.
They'll get, insha'Allah, a little bit of it.
Right? Every time you make dua for the
Muslims,
and then when you are gone, people make
dua for the Muslims.
You are one of them. Correct? So yes,
you get a little. But now suppose somebody
remembers you by name. Okay. What's your name,
brother?
Muhammad. What a beautiful name. Khalas. Okay. Suppose
when you are may Allah give you a
long life, but eventually you have to go.
When you are gone,
your friend says, may Allah have mercy on
Muhammad.
He really helped me out when I needed
his help.
That dua, do you think it's gonna have
the same weight as when I just say,
oh, Allah, forgive all the Muslims, and that
includes you out of 15,000,000,000?
Right. So now we have
dua and istighfar
specifically for you, but it's the same concept.
Right? This is point number what?
5. Point number 5. Point number 6,
the gifting of good deeds to you after
you're gone.
The gifting of good deeds to you after
you're gone. Okay?
So what is your name?
Kareem.
I should know. Sorry. Okay. Kareem.
Inshallah, you also live a long life. I
know you guys are young, so these are
not don't get morbid here. You have a
long life. But eventually, what's gonna happen? He
won't be here. It's just a fact that
I won't be here. Right? InshaAllah.
Kareem's
grandchildren.
You will get married. Don't worry. We're all
making du'a for you.
Special dua for him. Look. He's so happy,
excited. Alhamdulillah. His night has been made. Khalas.
He's gonna go.
All the other brothers are waiting for me
to point fingers at them too.
He Look, he's already turning red, Bijada. SubhanAllah.
Should have chosen somebody the Karim skin color.
Anyway, let us Okay.
Literally Anyway, let's not embarrass him more. Okay.
Kareem,
insha'Allah, will get married. Yeah. And insha'Allah, he'll
have kids and grandkids.
Crisis. But eventually, they have to we all
have to go back to Allah.
And insha Allah, one day his grandkids are
gonna remember
our jed, Kareem.
Jaddana.
He did so much for us. They're gonna
go for Hajj and Umrah on him.
An entire
hajj gifted for kareem.
What's gonna happen? That's a massive gift. Right?
So points 45
sorry, 56?
Du'a. Du'a and?
Gift. Now, let me ask you.
Why will anybody
mention you in a dua or gift you
a good deed? You helped
them. Because you have affected them positively. You
did something good for them. So, in reality,
this
You did something good for them.
So in reality, this goes back to point
number 3,
good deeds. But it is a subcategory point
number 3,
which should incentivize
every one of us to concentrate on good
deeds
that, that do what?
That
help other people.
The more people you help,
and that's why there's 2 categories of good
deeds. Your personal ritual is very important, but
then there's also Muamalat.
And our religion has come to perfect both.
And for some aspects,
the Ibadat are more important, but for other
aspects and the general rule, Muamalat are more
important. Because Allah forgives
shortcomings in Ibadat easily,
but muamalat is a different thing.
And it is possible when you do good
unto others,
that will actually benefit you much longer and
in many different ways than if you go
pray tahajjud in the privacy of your house.
So points number 5 and 6, specific dua
and istirfar, and also general dua and istirfar,
and specific gifting of good deeds.
These are some of the most powerful ways
to absolve yourself of the punishment of Allah,
Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala, and earn higher reward. That
means you better start maximizing,
bringing smiles on the faces of other people.
You better start maximizing
impacting people in good ways
because you're gonna bank on number 56.
You're gonna want that, but you cannot It's
not in your hands. But without a doubt,
we all know this. SubhanAllah, we all have
friends that have passed on. We all make
dua for them the first day they're gone.
And only a few of them, every once
in a while, will remember them. We're like,
may Allah have mercy on that brother. May
Allah That Who are those people? They're the
ones who, in this dunya, they impacted you.
So you better also be amongst them. So
this is point number what? 56.
Okay. Move on to
7 and 8. And we said these are
pure gifts from Allah and his messenger. We
cannot count on them, but Allah chooses and
the prophet, salallahu alayhi wa sallam, chooses with
the permission of Allah. So point number
7 is the shafa'ah of our prophet shafa'ah
of our Prophet, salallahu alaihi wa sallam. He
will make shafa'ah
and Allah will accept his shafa'ah,
but we cannot guarantee we will be in
that category. We cannot. That's not You cannot
work your way there guaranteed,
but
you
can try your best to be in that
category.
How so? Again, there are, you know, techniques
to do so. Of them, increase your salat
and salam upon the Prophet shalallahu alaihi wa
sallam. Of them, after the adhan, you make
the special dua because our Prophet said, Whoever
does that, then my shifa'a, I'll make it
from on the day of judgment. Right?
And other ways as well to make shifa'a.
And also of them is to say the
kalima. Our prophet, salaam, said that my shifa'a
is for all of my ummah who says
the kalima with Ikhlas. Say
la ilaha illallah, and you say it. And
that is the way one of the ways
you get to shawah of the prophet sallallahu
alaihi wa sallam. So the prophet sallallahu alaihi
wa sallam's
shafa'a
is for his entire ummah, and Allah will
accept some of that shafa'ah.
So it means
somebody was destined to be punished.
Somebody didn't make the cut, he made a
d minus on the exam of Allah. He
didn't pass.
And he was destined for jahannam,
but our Prophet shalallahu alaihi wa sallam made
shafa'ah,
And because he made shafa'a,
then that person is allowed to go in,
even though he didn't earn the marks.
Now, that shafa'a, again, you cannot count on
it, but you can try. And the way
you do so, again, there are ways to
do so. Of them is you do dhikr,
you say the kalima. Of them is, again,
you help the ummah of the prophet salallahu
alayhi wasalam. These are all ways that you
try your best to get the shifa'ah of
the prophet salallahu alayhi wasalam. Extra salat and
salam, these are ways. That's number what now?
7. Number 7. Okay. Number 8. Again, this
is purely a gift from Allah
that mentioned in Hadith and Bukhari that Allah
subhanahu wa ta'ala will
ask the angels to make shifa'a. I mean,
number 8 actually, you can say. Number 8
has multiple categories. The shifa'a, the process on
the shifa'a, the angels, the shifa'a of the
saliheen.
This is a larger category. We don't have
time for an academic lecture. And all of
these, you cannot guarantee them. So for example,
the shahid will make shifa'a for 70 people.
Okay. The hafil in the hadith in Tirmidhi
will make shifa'a for 10 people. Okay. The
alim will make shifa'ah for x amount of
people. Righteous people will make shifa'ah. And by
the way, this means you should associate with
the righteous people, that you should marry into
righteous people. Okay? All of you young brothers
make a generic dua. May Allah grant you
righteous spouses. Generic dua. Say, amen.
Look at the loud amen,
You brothers as well that are single. As
for those that are married, I don't I
don't wanna get in trouble, so I can't
say anything. But for those that are I
can't say anything, Rob. I'm saying this. For
For those that are single, may Allah grant
you a righteous spouse. Say, amen. Amen. Look
at how loud, mashaAllah. Okay, alhamdulillah.
You want to marry righteous
and you want to be associated with righteous,
and you wanna
have friends with the right
because one of the categories, you cannot bank
on it, you cannot guarantee
help, but you help yourself in this regard,
you help yourself by
associating
people that Allah will give right of shifa'atuh.
Right? And those people, it's in the hadith
it mentions. Again, I'm going a little bit
academic, time is tight here. But
on the day of judgment, Allah will say
to the shahid, Allah will say to the
hafil,
choose 10 people.
Allah will give a quota to the righteous
people. Allah will say to the 'aram, Allah
will say to choose this many people. And
obviously, this is an honor,
because in front of everybody he's being a
quota. Right? So, the shahid, the hafil, the
adam, the the righteous person, the wali is
told, choose 50 people.
Isn't it a badge of honor Allah gave
me 50 now? A technical point. 50 here
does not mean
that it's guaranteed
because he is not God.
50 is a shafaa.
Shafa'ah means, yeah, okay. If Allah wants to,
he'll accept. And if Allah can say no,
Allah has the right to say no. Because
then it's not a, you know, get out
of jail free card. That's not it doesn't
Allah doesn't play games. But Allah honors some
people,
and Allah chooses to use some people to
forgive others. Allah knows in the end of
the day, obviously. So Allah chooses the righteous,
and this righteous will say, you know what?
This sinner there, I know he was a
drunkard, but he helped me out in such
and such a day. Oh, Allah, please, one
of that 15 quarter, 50 quarter, I use
him. And Allah will say, okay, khalas, I'll
give it as well. And Allah might say
no, because in the end it's up to
Allah. But the point is shafa'a.
That's number what now? 8. 8. Now, obviously,
the shafa'a of the number 7. Right? The
shafa'a of the process is the highest category,
obviously. But all the other shafa'a come under
there. Number 9
is,
again, pure gift, and that is Allah chooses
some people who don't deserve, and Allah's rahma
will come upon them even though they don't
deserve it. And again, you cannot bank on
this. You cannot you cannot guarantee it. Again,
this is something we find in the hadith
as well. Allah will say on the day
of judgment to the angels,
make shafa'ah for whoever you want, and the
angels will choose. And generally speaking, the angels
choose the people who do righteous deeds, especially
the ones do it in private. Especially for
example, salatul tahajjud, reading Quran, what nobody knew
about but the angels knew about. The angels
will primarily choose them. Right? And then Allah
will say to the prophets, then Allah will
say to the hifab, Allah will say to
the righteous, and every person will be given
that quota. Then Allah will say, anybody left,
every person will be given that quota. Then
Allah will say, anybody left? And the quotas
have all been given. Then Allah will say,
all of the Shafi'een have given the Shafa'a,
and no one is left except Arhamurruhaymeen.
Then Allah will choose
people that were left by everybody.
Allah will choose,
and Allah will take people who were destined
for jahannam
for something in their hearts we don't know.
Something they had,
and they didn't get the shafah of anybody
else. And Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala will cause
them to enter Jannah. Again, you cannot bank
on that. You cannot work to achieve it.
It's just a gift from Allah. So this
is category 8. Now, categories
9 and 10, we said, we don't want.
We seek Allah's refuge for. We don't want.
But they are lesser punishments
that some people,
they're just not gonna be forgiven, but they
don't deserve jahannam.
Okay. They're not gonna be forgiven,
but they don't deserve jahannam. So they will
be punished,
but not in jahannam. We do not want
that.
And that's categories 9 and 10. Categories
9, adab ul kabr
and fitnatul kabr. And category 10,
the pain and the anxiety on the day
of judgment.
Okay? That's 9 and 10. So,
generally speaking, categories 9 and 10, obviously, not
jen. We don't want them at all, but
they're better than the alternative, and the alternative
is the adab of Allah and jannah. We
don't want that. So for example, category 9,
you know, the kattaat that is mentioned in
the hadith. The one who was a troublemaker
amongst friends,
tell tattletailing in order to break the bonds.
That's just nasty.
That's evil.
And that person doesn't deserve
full forgiveness, maybe. But at the same time,
maybe if he is righteous in praying and
fasting,
maybe he doesn't deserve jahannam. Right? So the
prophet told us that
Atat,
the one who's
backbiting and gossiping to break friends, like, you
know, your friend might do something silly and
say something you shouldn't say about another friend.
You go and you tell her, hey, you
know what so and so said about you.
Okay. Even if he messed up, why do
you have to break friendship?
Even if he back bited, why did you
have to be the tattletale?
Right? Why did you have to be the
snitch to actually break the friendship? Because you
caused more damage.
You could have just stayed quiet. So the
one who made that a lifestyle You know,
the
gossiper and wallahi social media is one of
the worst amplifiers of this. A'udhubillah.
A'udhubillah.
The cancel culture and the all of this
type of stuff. As you know, I'm totally
against this. This type of, you know, thriving
on drama,
right, creating
havoc in the community.
Maybe they have personal righteous deeds that cause
them to be forgiven in the end, but
they don't know that. And so, in the
kabr for eons and eons and eons, until
the day of judgment, they shall be punished.
And they don't know what their net result
is, only to find out on the day
of judgment they're actually forgiven, but after all
of that has happened. So we don't want
that. Right? And also we know certain sins.
I have a whole long lecture about the
sins that get punishment. We don't want those.
So category 9 is punishment of the kabr.
Category 10, the anxiety and punishment on the
day of judgment itself.
Right? On the day of judgment, there will
be stress
for a category of people. Another category, no
stress.
There will be a category under the shade
of Allah's throne, a category drinking from the
fountain, a category fully at peace and sekinah,
we wanna be amongst them. There'll be another
category
totally stressed out. They won't know where their
book is gonna be given. They won't know
they're gonna be there. That stress in and
of itself
forgives,
And there will be people who deserve
not immediate maghfirah, but they don't deserve Allah's
aidaab.
And again, generally,
generally,
these are people that have fallen short of
the wajibat,
or they have harmed other people.
Okay?
Yet they have other good deeds as well.
So they can be exonerated, but not fully.
So again, to conclude then, we don't have
time to go all over 10, you are
saved. I would've chosen somebody at random but,
we cannot have time for that. To conclude,
these are the 10 ways that
we are protected from the adab of Allah
Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala, but we need to concentrate
most importantly on the first 4. And out
of these 4, tawba istighfar is basically 1,
and then doing good deeds automatically
magnifies
into categories 5 and 6. Right? Doing good
deeds, especially helping other people. So the message
I wanna leave you with, never give up
hope in Allah's mercy. Constantly do good deeds.
Constantly help other people. Constantly bring a smile
to your brother's or sister's
punishment of Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala. So many
ahadithaba people living evil lifestyles,
but being good to others. And because of
that, their personal sins are forgiven because they
helped other people out. And these can also
demonstrate this. We ask Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala
on this blessed and holy night to save
us from his adaab, to be amongst those
who are forgiven and whose ranks are raised
up. Wa akhur da'wal alhamdulillahirb alalameen Wasallallahu was
salawbarak
