You've been trying to finish the Quran this month, and then you get
your period. What do you do? The reason you may be confused is
because, like many issues in fiqh, there's a difference of opinion
amongst the scholars in the first position of prohibition. That
means you cannot recite the Quran on your period. This is the
position of the shafiries, the Hanafis and the hanbalis. They
have three general proofs. The first being that I should the
Allahu anha narrates of the Prophet sallallahu Alam would
recite the Quran while his head was in her lap as he was lying
down. Ibn Dali shahfari scholar mentions that Ayesha radila
huranha would not have mentioned she was on her period had it not
been been a significant reason for her to do so. So the fact that the
Prophet saw them was reciting the Quran while lying down on her lap,
and she was in Mensis demonstrates that she typically would not have
been reciting the Quran at all. And so she's differentiating
between recitation and listening to the Quran while you are in
Mensis. The second is there are a number of statements that a person
who is in Geneva or a person who is on their period should not be
reciting the Quran, and the third is Beas, which is looking at the
circumstance of major ritual impurity, and seeing that a woman
in Mensis is in that state, and therefore, because they are
similar, the ruling would be established. Now to clarify this
does not mean that a woman in Mensis is impure, not physically
or spiritually. It simply means that for a person in that state,
regardless of how they got into it, they need to take a shower
before engaging in ritual acts of worship. If you are trying to
finish the Quran, and you're reading, we wonders a day, for
example, and you follow this opinion, you may not finish the
Quran in this month because your period may be too long if it's
consistent, and you may not have enough days to finish the
recitation. However, scholars of this position would say that you
received the reward as if you did it your intention was to do so.
What they do allow in this position is to say dua that are in
the Quran. So, for example, sitting in the car and saying the
verse of the Quran that's typically said as a dua when
you're going to travel. That would be acceptable as long as the
intention is dua, not recitation. Now scholars, from the other
opinion look at similar proofs and have a different perspective on
them. So scholars such as Bukhari altobari, Ibn Taymiyyah Ibn Hazm
of the vahiris Albani, so many other scholars and the Maliki
Madhab all hold that it is permissible to recite the Quran
while in Mensis, in response to the hadith of our shadow de la
Juan, had they say there is no actual prohibition mentioned.
Rather, there's simply an inference. They've come to that
conclusion based on their understanding of why she would
have mentioned it. And so they point to the fact that while there
were many women companions, many of whom would have been
menstruating on a regular basis, there is no statement for many of
them that it was impermissible for them to recite the Quran during
this time. They also point to the fact that the default is to
constantly recite the Quran and remember Allah's penalties, like
Allah tells us in the Quran, Saqqara, uma Taya, saromin, and
so, because the default is recitation, unless there is clear
and unequivocal proof that there's prohibition, it is not allowed to
prohibit it. They point to the narrations that were mentioned
earlier, where a person who's in a state of Geneva or in Mensis not
reciting the Quran being disputed in their authenticity, and because
they are disputed in whether or not they are authentic, they do
not hold enough weight to make a ruling in and of themselves. The
third point is that of the Imam Al qarafi, a maniche scholar mentions
that a woman in Mensis is not the same as a person in janava. In
janava, they choose when they will get in and take a shower take it
out. A woman does not control when she will get her menses or control
when she can finish it. So he mentions that making the argument
that they are similar is not, in fact, similar. They also point
that Aysha will dial a whole anha as she was going to the Farewell
Pilgrimage of the Prophet, peace be upon him. Did get her period,
and when she was weeping, the Prophet saw him, comforted her,
told her what to do. And in none of that did he mention not to
recite the Quran. And in hajj, there is a lot of recitation of
the Quran. So therefore there was no prohibition mentioned of this
by the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wasallam, even in that moment, you
may follow a meth HEB, you may follow no meth HEB, you may be
confused on who these scholars are. And if that is the case,
please know that both sides have substantial scholarship and
substantial evidence. I personally recite during that time I follow
the opinion that it is permissible. However, so many
scholars, as we just mentioned, do not hold that it is permissible,
and if you choose to follow that opinion, please know that Allah
will reward you and bless you as if you did it inshaAllah. And if
you choose to recite during that time, may Allah bless you too. And
also, isn't it so incredible that we have a religion that if you
just make the intention and you're unable to fulfill it because of
any circumstance, Allah will still reward you a.
