We will be talking about a verse at
the end of Surah An-Nahl, almost at
the end of Surah An-Nahl in which
Allah SWT says Arabic The
translation, Allah SWT gives an example of a
village that was at peace Arabic Its
sustenance was coming from every direction Arabic and
it was ungrateful, it became ungrateful for the
blessings of Allah SWT So Allah SWT made
that village taste the clothing of hunger and
fear because of what they were doing So
this is a very very profound verse which
has a lot of explanation that we can
talk about It can maybe take hours But
the summary of what I'd like to talk
about today is our limited understanding of rizq
and sustenance What do we mean when we
say rizq?
And most of us, we assume that it
refers to material things like money, food, housing,
clothing, etc We assume that that's what rizq
is But Allah SWT, He says that rizq
is much more than that Sustenance is much
more than that And this verse will, amongst
other verses, it will tell us that rizq
is something that is more than the physical
It is something that is unseen and it
is more internal rather than anything else So
Allah says, Arabic Allah SWT gives an example
of a village that was in a state
of peace Arabic It means peace Arabic Internal
tranquility, internal peace It had these qualities Arabic
Its rizq and sustenance was coming from all
directions So this is a description, you can
say, of Arabic That the fact that Allah
SWT gave them aman, gave them an external
peace and an internal peace This was the
rizq that was coming to them from all
directions This was the sustenance that was coming
to them from all directions So I'd like
to talk about this aman for now And
what is aman?
Aman means peace And Allah SWT, He said
in another verse in the Quran Arabic Arabic
Which of the two groups are more worthy
of having aman, of having peace?
If you only knew Then the question Allah
SWT asks And then He answers the question
He says, those people that have iman And
they do not contaminate their iman with zulm
Zulm here refers to shirk They do not
contaminate their iman with shirk They are the
ones that will get aman, they will have
peace So, inner tranquility, inner peace will come
when a person, he has iman Without iman,
there can be no peace Without faith in
Allah SWT, there can be no peace And
this is a form of rizq that we
sometimes do not think of as rizq We
do not think of as being a provision
from Allah SWT Where in fact it is
something that Allah SWT has given us as
a form of rizq In another verse of
the Quran, Allah SWT says If
only the dwellers of the villages, they had
iman and they had taqwa Then we would
open up many forms of barakah from the
sky Many forms of barakah, we generally assume
that only rain comes from the sky, right?
Rain is the rizq that comes from the
sky, water from the sky, rainfall But Allah
says barakah, many different types of barakah So
what else comes from the sky?
This is that peace, this is the aman,
this is the itminan that we crave and
we want So, generally again, we need to
reevaluate our thinking of rizq And we can
see from many examples that take place around
us That many people, many Hollywood stars, many
singers, they have the outward trappings of success
They have the money, they have the mansions,
they have the cars And yet, every few
months or so, we find that, you know,
they commit suicide or they die of an
overdose The latest one was the most famous
one, was the Prince episode And apparently he
died of an overdose of something which is
called fentanyl People who are aware of what
fentanyl is, this is 100 times more potent,
more stronger than morphine And it's 50 times
more stronger than pharmaceutical grade, 100% pure
heroin You know how bad heroin is, right?
And how badly you've seen heroin addicts that
sometimes lose their life over these addictions Fentanyl
is 50 times more potent and more powerful
than heroin itself Why does a person who
has all of these outward trappings of success,
why does he need to take these drugs?
That means there's something missing in that person's
life And that is the risk that a
person without iman is deprived of, which is
this aman and itminan Aman and itminan, Allah
SWT, He tells us Whoever turns away from
My remembrance, he will have a very tight
life, a constricted life And Allah SWT also
tells us Those people that have iman and
their hearts gain itminan and peace through the
dhikr of Allah SWT Through the remembrance of
Allah SWT And again this remembrance is not
just to make the speech Remembering Allah SWT
at all times and fulfilling the obligations due
upon a person throughout the day And staying
away from the things that He has forbidden
throughout the day and night This is the
dhikr of Allah SWT And then Allah says
very clearly Be aware that only through the
remembrance of Allah SWT will the hearts find
peace Only, ala, be aware And then, bi
dhikrillah, it is mentioned in such a way
that it is muqaddam Which means that only
through the remembrance of Allah will the hearts
find peace The wording is supposed to be
that But bi dhikrillah has been brought forward
That means only through the remembrance of Allah
SWT will hearts find peace So we need
to broaden our understanding of what sustenance is
And not just limit it to the fact
that Allah SWT has given us from material
things that is risk But it is much
much broader than that And that is why
in a hadith the Prophet SAW said The
person who wakes up in the morning and
he has peace in his family There is
no arguments taking place between him and his
wife, between him and his children And he
is peaceful in the sense that he is
not afraid that a bomb might come through
his window and kill all of his family
He is peaceful in the sense that no
robber is going to come and burgle his
house in the middle of the night So
he has peace And he has mu'afan
fi jasadi, meaning he has a healthy body
He has a healthy body and he doesn't
have any type of illness And he has
sustenance for just the one day, only one
day It's as if he has been given
the whole world and whatever it contains With
all of its treasures, they have been given
to him This is what peace is about
So again the verses, Allah SWT gives an
example of a village that was at peace
It had iman, it had tranquility inside And
its risk was coming, its sustenance was coming
From every direction And it rejected or it
was ungrateful for the blessings of Allah SWT
So Allah SWT made it, made this village,
dressed this village with libasul ju' With the
clothing of hunger and fear, hunger and fear
So the opposite of itminan is what?
Fear So Allah SWT gave it the clothing
of fear Allah SWT uses this metaphor to
make us understand what is libas Libas, we
mentioned it earlier in the month, is clothing
that you wear So when you are clothed
with something, it's always surrounding you, it never
leaves you So Allah, when people became ungrateful
or will become ungrateful This fear and hunger,
it's something that will always be around you
and surround you And it's not going to
leave your side, it's going to be something
that's always going to be worrying you So
Allah says, So Allah SWT makes it taste
the clothing of hunger and the clothing of
fear Again the opposite of peace Because of
what they were doing So the summary is
that, number one, we should be grateful for
the blessings that Allah SWT has given us
And not assume that somebody who is better
off than us in terms of monetary wealth
and physical wealth He is happy, there is
no guarantee for that And how are we
going to actually find happiness and peace is
by the obedience of Allah SWT Disobedience will
result in this unease, it will result in
the fear It will result in the inner
peace being removed from oneself So we have
to seek that peace, we have to seek
that happiness in that obedience of Allah SWT
And in staying away from his disobedience and
be from those people that Allah SWT said,
Those people that had iman and they did
not contaminate their iman with shirk Only those
people are deserving of the amn and peace
from Allah SWT And those are the ones
that are guided I pray that Allah SWT
gives us tawfiq to understand and practice what
has been said and heard
