In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious,
the Most Merciful.
In the
name
of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Last night we completed Surah Al-A'raf
and about half of Surah Al-Anfal.
From Surah Al-A'raf, I'd just like
to talk about a selection of verses.
Probably most of you are aware of an
incident that took place with the Bani Israel.
When Musa A.S. left to meet with
Allah SWT once, he came back and in
the meantime, his people had made a golden
calf and had started worshipping it.
So, basically, the whole concept of Dawahid and
worshipping Allah SWT, that Musa A.S. had
been drilling into them for all this time,
it became invalidated in just a few days
that he disappeared from them.
So, this story is mentioned in Surah Taha
and also it's mentioned in Surah Al-A
'raf.
So, at the end of that episode when
Musa A.S. came back, Allah SWT, he
told those people that were engaged in this
white worship that they should kill each other
and then the people that were left, this
is what is mentioned about them.
Allah SWT says, and this is starting from
Ayah number 186, Allah SWT says,
Allah SWT commanded Musa
A.S. to take 70 people that were
the most intelligent and the most pious and
the most obedient and to take them to
meet Allah SWT.
So, this is what Musa A.S. did.
When the punishment took them,
Musa A.S. said, Oh my Lord, if
you wanted, you could have destroyed me before,
destroyed them before and also me.
So, what happened was that even these 70
people Allah SWT punished them.
Now, why did they get punished?
There are a couple of stories mentioned in
Tafaseer.
One of them is that when Musa A
.S. took these people, they started asking Musa
A.S. for special favors.
One of the special favors was that ask
Allah to give us such a blessing that
nobody has had it before and nobody will
get it afterwards.
We want such a special blessing that it's
only specific for us.
Nobody else should get it either before or
after.
So, Allah SWT didn't like this and they
got destroyed because of that.
That's one riwayah.
According to another riwayah, Musa A.S. took
these people and they wanted to meet Allah
SWT.
They wanted to talk to Allah SWT.
They said that we want to hear actually
Allah SWT.
So, Musa A.S. agreed that yes, you
have a chance to actually hear Allah SWT
when he is talking to me.
So, when they got to Tur-e-Sinai,
the Mount Sinai, Allah SWT, a huge cloud
appeared on top of the mountain.
Very dark black cloud in which Musa A
.S. disappeared.
And then he talked to Allah SWT and
asked for permission for these people to come
and also hear his talk.
So, Allah SWT granted the permission and they
all came into this cloud that Allah SWT
had formed to talk to Musa A.S.
And they actually heard Allah SWT talking.
They heard his voice and there could be
no doubt as to who was talking to
Musa A.S. But when they came out
of this cloud, they said, we want to
actually see Allah SWT.
Arinallaha jahra, which is mentioned in another place.
Actually later on, in the beginning of the
9th Juz.
We want to see Allah SWT with our
own eyes.
So, this Allah SWT disliked.
You've heard his voice.
You've had a miraculous experience.
And now on top of that, you want
something else.
So, Allah SWT destroyed them because of this
request.
So, this is what is mentioned here.
And after they were destroyed, Musa A.S.
said, oh Allah, you could have just destroyed
us from before.
And also me.
This is one of your trials.
You misguide whom you want and you guide
whom you want.
You are our ally.
Forgive our sins and have mercy on us.
And you are indeed the best of forgivers.
Musa A.S. is continuing his dua.
And he is saying, oh Allah, right for
us in this dunya are good.
And in the akhira, in the hereafter, we
will be guided towards you.
Allah SWT responds to the dua of Musa
A.S. And he said, my punishment, I
give it to whom I want.
My mercy, it transgresses everything.
It is sufficient for everybody and everything.
There is, under this ayah, there is a
tafsir mentioned of a Bedouin that came into
the masjid of the Prophet A.S. And
he tied his camel and he came, prayed
with the Prophet A.S., listened to his
talk for a bit, and then he got
up, rode his camel, and he made a
dua.
Oh Allah, have mercy on me and Muhammad
A.S. and do not include anybody else
in that mercy.
Only us, we should get that mercy, nobody
else.
So the Prophet A.S., according to the
riwayat, he said, who is more misguided, this
Bedouin or his camel?
He is making a dua, he is basically
minimizing the mercy of Allah SWT.
And then that famous hadith of how Allah
SWT has taken one portion of his mercy
or one percent of his mercy and he
has distributed it amongst his whole creation from
the beginning of time until the end of
time, that one hundredth of his mercy was
sufficient for all of the mercy that we
have amongst us, even the mother that has
mercy for her child and the animal that
have mercy for their young, that is a
result of that one percent of the mercy
and then ninety-nine percent of his mercy,
Allah has saved it for the Day of
Judgement, he is going to utilize it to
forgive people.
So this comes under that very same hadith.
So Allah says, wa rahmati wasi'at kulla
shay, my mercy is sufficient for everything, this
is the point that I want to make,
who are deserving of the mercy of Allah
SWT, Allah says, I am going to write
it for those people that have the taqwa
of Allah SWT, that give the zakah and
they have iman in our signs.
الذين يتبعون الرسول النبي الأمي, those that follow
the Ummi Prophet, the unlettered Prophet, الذين يجدونه
مكتوبا عندهم في التوراة والإنجيل, those that they
find him written with them in the Taurat
and Injil.
So Allah SWT is indirectly making a reference
to the Jews and the Christians, that they
have this reference to our beloved Prophet Sallallahu
Alaihi Wasallam in their books.
But they hide it, or they have corrupted
it, they have changed it, and they never
admit to it.
There is a story that took place in
the time of the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam,
where the Prophet came across a group of
Jews, and they were Rabbis who were reading
verses from the Taurat, and they were reading
specific verses which were related to a person's
death.
One of the sons of the people present,
one of the sons of the Jewish Rabbis
was present, he was actually on his deathbed,
he was dying.
So at that time the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi
Wasallam asked these people, that is my name
mentioned in the Taurat or not?
So the elders, they turned around and said,
no, your name is not mentioned in the
Taurat.
As for the person, the son who was
on his deathbed, he spoke up and said,
that I swear by Allah your name is
mentioned in the Taurat, and I bear witness
that you are the Prophet of Allah, and
he died straight away after that in a
state of Iman, and the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi
Wasallam buried him as a Muslim.
So this is written with them in the
Taurat and Injil, so basically Allah is giving
ample opportunity for the Jews and Christians, and
telling them that my Rahma is written for
you, my Rahma is written for you if
only you accept the message of Islam that
the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam has brought.
Otherwise you cannot be deserving of that mercy
of Allah SWT.
This Prophet, he orders
them to do good, he forbids them from
evil, he makes Halal for them the pure
things, and he makes Haram for them the
evil things, and he removes from them the
shackles and the chains that were upon them.
So there were a lot of things that
were self-imposed upon the Bani Israel, things
which basically were related more to dietary restrictions,
which even the Orthodox Jews still practice to
this day, which has been mentioned earlier in
the Surah.
Allah SWT had put dietary restrictions that
fat of any animal was not permissible, except
the fat which was on the backs of
cows and camels, they were allowed to consume
that.
Other than that, any other fat which was
on the rest of the animal, it was
not allowed for their consumption.
Or fat which was mixed within the meat,
within the actual meat, that was allowed for
their consumption.
So the orthodox Jews, the strictly orthodox Jews
actually still follow this practice.
So what this verse refers to is that
Allah SWT is telling the previous nations, particularly
the Jews, that the difficulties and the self
-imposed regulations that they had put upon themselves,
or Allah SWT had put upon them, the
Prophet had come to remove those restrictions.
And their Sharia became easy because of the
coming of the Prophet SAW.
At the end, Allah
declares that whoever had Iman on the Prophet,
and respected him, and helped him, and they
followed the Nur that was revealed with him,
they are the ones that will be successful.
This is a criteria that the previous nations
have to follow to get success.
Without that, they cannot be successful.
This is having Iman in the Prophet SAW,
respecting him, and helping him, and obeying the
Quran that was revealed with the Prophet SAW,
and believing in it.
So, only then, and then they will be
successful.
Moving on to Surah Al-Anfal.
Surah Al-Anfal refers to the spoils of
war.
Meaning that when a war is taking place,
what happens is that there is obviously weaponry,
horses, etc.
that has been left behind by the enemy.
So the rulings of that, this Surah was
actually revealed after the Battle of Badr, which
was the first battle of Islam.
Nobody knew what to do about the Anfal.
So, the Surah starts with
They are asking you, O Prophet of Allah,
about the spoils of war.
The initial ruling was
that they are all, everything is supposed to
be gathered, and is to be put in
the Baytul Mal.
And then later on, Allah SWT relaxed those
rulings, and at the beginning of the 5th
This is, it distributes
the spoils of war into one-fifth for
the Baytul Mal, and the rest, which is
distributed amongst the people who participated.
I just want to focus on one Ayah,
and that is, and remember again, this Surah
was revealed at the time of the Battle
of Badr.
And the people had come, the disbelievers, the
Quraish had come, to actually just annihilate the
Muslims once and for all.
They had brought this huge army, spent a
lot of money to get this army together,
weaponry together, horses, camels, everything.
Even, they had spent money on women, so
that they could be singing songs of victory
after they actually got the victory.
So, Allah SWT lays down a principle that
you'll always find against Islam.
And that is, that people will continue to
spend their resources and money against Islam.
And this will always be.
And this is mentioned, Indeed,
those people that disbelieve, they will spend their
money to prevent people from the path of
Allah SWT.
But, the word of Allah SWT, it will
be elevated, and people will believe in Allah
SWT.
This will
continue to be so, Allah SWT guides whom
He wills.
Allah says, فَسَيُنفِقُونَهَا They will continue to spend.
Then, it will be
a hasra for them, it will be upsetting
for them, they will be sorry for what
they had done.
And then on top of that,
they themselves will be defeated.
If we look around, we see different organizations
nowadays, that are *-bent on basically minimizing
the spread of Islam, by maligning Islam, by
criticizing Islam, and by saying bad things about
Islam.
And millions upon millions of dollars are being
spent to do that.
And there are people who are donating to
these causes, and they are trying to make
sure that Islam is not spread.
But at the same time, we see people
are still accepting Islam, people are still learning
about Islam, and this is what this ayah
is saying.
They will continue to spend, and then
they will obviously, ultimately be sorry.
And then on top of that, ثُمَّ يُغْلَبُونَ
They themselves will be defeated.
And then in the hereafter,
Those people that disbelieve, they will
be gathered in the hellfire.
So, this is again a very profound verse,
which talks about some things which are still
happening around us to this day, people spending
to downplay the importance of Islam, and trying
to criticize and rebuke Islam.
But this is something that Allah SWT has
promised, that Islam will spread, and nobody can
do anything about it.
I pray that Allah SWT gives us tawfiq
to understand and practice what is being said
in here.
Al Fatiha.
