Today I am going to be talking about
a few verses in Surah Al-Baqarah which
talk about the issue of black magic.
The reality is that such a thing exists
and there has been always forms of black
magic around and specifically here we are going
to be talking about the black magic which
existed from the time of and a civilization
of Babylon.
Babylon as you are probably aware is an
area which is ancient Iraq, Iraq today, it
is called Babel in Arabic and this is
where the story took place, the story of
two angels named Harut and Marut.
But prior to going into that story, there
is a little bit of background as to
why Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala sent those
angels and the reason behind that was so
that they could teach the people the difference
between magic and a pure blessing from Allah
Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala and miracles of the
Prophets Alayhumma Salatu Wa Salam.
So the background to this was that Sulaiman
Alayhi Salam, he had such a kingdom that
nobody else had before in history.
He had the ability to understand the talk
of the animals, he had the ability to
control the jinns and he had this kingdom,
nobody has had that kind of a kingdom
before and nobody will ever have that kind
of kingdom again.
So there were people amongst the humans and
also the jinns, the shayateen, they started spreading
rumors about Sulaiman Alayhi Salam's kingdom that he
had attained it through the use of black
magic.
So Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala sent angels
to teach the people that this is black
magic and what Sulaiman Alayhi Salam got and
the things that he is getting in terms
of the miracles, the understanding of the language,
the fact that he controls the jinns, that
is a blessing from Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta
'ala and not black magic as you are
claiming.
So I am going to go through the
verses bit by bit and explain them as
we go along.
Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala says And
when a prophet from Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta
'ala came to them and he was testifying
to that what was with them and this
is actually referring to the Prophet Alayhi Salam
coming to the people.
The group from the people who were given
the book, meaning in this case the Jews,
they threw Kitab Allahi Wara'a Dhuhurihim, they
threw the book of Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta
'ala behind their backs.
As if they do not know.
So when the Prophet Alayhi Salam came, he
gave them the revelation, the Quran and these
people, they threw the revelation behind their backs.
And instead of accepting the Quran, what did
they do?
They followed what the Shayateen were claiming against
the kingdom of Sulaiman, meaning these Jewish people,
they followed what the Shayateen were claiming against
the kingdom of Sulaiman that Sulaiman Alayhi Salam
had achieved his kingdom or attained his kingdom
through the use of black magic.
So this was a claim made by the
Jews and also this was propagated by the
Shayateen, the jinns of the time and also
the Shayateen from the humans.
And also in addition to that, if you
read the scriptures or the books which talk
about Sulaiman Alayhi Salam, it talks about, you
know, worse things than even a normal believer
would be doing.
I don't even want to paraphrase the things
that have been claimed about Sulaiman Alayhi Salam
because they are so outrageous that not even
a decent human being would like to be
accused of such things.
So these claims were made against Sulaiman Alayhi
Salam by those Jewish people and the Prophet
Alayhi Salam refuted those claims but instead of
accepting that they followed what the Shayateen had
been claiming against Sulaiman Alayhi Salam.
Allah SWT clarifies and claims the innocence of
Sulaiman Alayhi Salam and says,
Sulaiman Alayhi Salam didn't disbelieve.
The Shayateen
were the ones that disbelieved and they taught
the human beings, other human beings magic.
So this shows that to actually delve into
the art of black magic, a person has
to lose his Iman.
A person has to lose his Iman.
So the claim against Sulaiman Alayhi Salam was
that he indulged in black magic.
Allah SWT responded by saying, he didn't say
that he did not indulge in black magic.
He responded by saying he didn't disbelieve.
So that means that indulging in black magic,
for you to indulge in black magic, for
anyone to indulge in black magic, a person
has to lose his Iman.
He has to become a disbeliever.
Then he gets the ability and the power
to have black magic.
And those Shayateen, the jinns
were the ones that used to teach people
the black magic and they were the ones
that were disbelieving in Allah SWT.
They were teaching people what was revealed
upon the two angels in Babylon.
Those two angels were Harut and Marut.
So from here Allah SWT starts talking about
Harut and Marut.
So Harut and Marut were two angels that
were sent by Allah SWT for people to
understand the difference between black magic and miracles
from Allah SWT.
And the easy way to understand this is
that there are so many illnesses, right?
In this world, Ebola virus and HIV and
the flu virus, all of these things, they
exist.
Now, there are doctors that have to go
into a lab and research these things.
They are exposed to all of these things,
these different kinds of viruses.
And a person cannot say that how come
you are going into the labs and exposing
yourself to these viruses.
These are so dangerous.
Well, the doctors will tell you, we have
to do it.
Why?
Because we need to research these things so
that we can find a cure for these
things.
So similarly, Allah SWT sent these angels to
teach the people not so that they could
learn and practice it, rather so that they
could avoid it.
Just like the doctors, they research these illnesses,
they research the bacteria, they research the viruses
so that people can understand more about them
and therefore avoid them and also if they
get afflicted by those viruses and illnesses, how
to treat them.
So these angels were sent with that purpose,
so that people could understand what black magic
was.
And on top of that, they used to,
whenever they used to teach people this black
magic, they used to tell them and give
them a warning.
Whenever they used to teach
people, they used to tell them that indeed
we are a trial.
This black magic is a trial for you.
Do not disbelieve.
Again, the same thing applies here.
Do not disbelieve means do not become disbelievers
and start practicing the art of black magic
upon people.
And people started learning from them that thing
that separates a man and his wife.
Now one of the biggest things that happens
amongst communities is people want to see families
being split up.
They see a happy family and they want
them to split up.
They want them to get into a divorce.
This is something that is despised by Allah
SWT.
It is something that is not liked.
Breaking up of a family is breaking up
of society.
Most of the crimes that occur and most
of the disturbed people that are there are
due to broken families and being raised in
single parent homes.
So Allah SWT is saying that these people
they learned this black magic from the angels
with the intention of splitting people up and
splitting up families.
And ultimately they are not going
to be able to harm anybody except with
the permission of Allah SWT.
And this is something that we need to
keep in mind.
This particular point that Allah has put right
in the middle is that many people they
become very superstitious.
If a person is getting headaches for example
he says somebody is doing black magic on
me.
Or a person he gets into an argument
with his wife, somebody is doing black magic
on me.
And this is not always the case.
99.9% of the time simple explanations
are there to show that it is something
completely different.
And this portion of the verse Allah SWT
is saying that only with the permission of
Allah SWT can somebody harm you.
So as believers we should not fall prey
to superstitions.
And we should do our very best to
engage in the protection that Allah SWT has
given us in terms of مَعُوَّذَتَيْنِ the last
two surahs of the Quran
Ayatul Kursi and
all of the other forms of protection that
are there for us to protect us from
this kind of evil.
So as believers if a person is praying
his Salat and he has Tawakkul and trust
in Allah SWT, this magic or these kinds
of things InshaAllah will not influence him.
And this is something that a person should
not be afraid of.
Allah SWT goes
on to say that they learn things that
would be harmful for them and not beneficial
for them.
And this is actually what people do, they
think that when I learn black magic and
what I'm going to attain from it, I'm
going to become wealthy, I'm going to be
able to influence people, I'm going to be
able to change people's lives, I'm going to
make people like me and all of these
things Allah SWT says that this kind of
thinking is wrong.
It's not going to be beneficial for them,
it's only going to be harmful for them.
And the biggest harm is what?
The loss of Iman.
The loss of Iman and destruction, eternal destruction
of the Hereafter.
And indeed
they knew that whatever they're buying, there is
no place for them, there is no share
for them in the Hereafter.
So basically what they're doing, this deal that
they're doing, learning this black magic, it will
result in no benefit for them in the
Hereafter.
And it is
a bad thing that they did, that they
sold themselves.
You've heard this saying in English, when a
person sells his soul to the devil, this
is what it is.
That a person, by engaging in black magic,
he's selling his soul, he's selling himself to
a degree that he's getting nothing in return.
He's becoming a disbeliever and he will ultimately
face the wrath of Allah SWT in the
Hereafter.
So, وَلَبِئْسَ مَا شَرَوْا بِهِ أَنفُسَهُمْ It is
a very bad thing that they sold themselves
for.
If only they knew.
And if they
had Iman, again the same thing applies, Iman
as opposed to black magic, which means that
a person engaging in black magic is actually
losing his Iman and he's becoming a disbeliever.
If they had Iman, وَاتَّقَوْا and they had
the Taqwa of Allah SWT,
Indeed, the Taqwa from Allah
If only
they knew.
So the summary basically is that there is
a reality of black magic, it does exist.
At the same time, if a person is
suffering from something, it doesn't necessarily have to
be black magic.
As believers, we believe in the protection of
Allah SWT.
We believe in the Mu'awwah Zatayn and
Ayatul Kursi and all of the things that
we use to protect ourselves from these things.
And we should ask Allah SWT to give
us protection from these things also.
And also we should not try to take
shortcuts and try to indulge in these things
to influence things in our life.
Because when we do that, this will be
tantamount to losing our own Iman.
I pray that Allah SWT gives us Tawfiq
to understand and practice what has been said
and heard.
Al Fatiha.
