Distance, and we seek his forgiveness.
We take refuge in Allah from the evils
of ourselves and the sinfulness of our actions.
Whomever Allah guides,
none can misguide.
And whomever Allah misguides,
none can guide.
I bear witness that there is none worth
worshiping
except Allah
alone
with no partner. And I bear witness that
Muhammad salallahu
alaihi wasallam is his servant and messenger.
Allahu subhanahu wa ta'ala tells us
in his beautiful book, the Quran.
Oh you who believe,
have taqwa of Allah with the taqwa that
is due to him, and die not except
in a state of submission to him, except
as Muslims.
And he also says, oh, people,
have taqwa of Allah,
your lord, have taqwa of your lord who
created you from a single soul and created
from it its mate and dispersed from both
of them many men and women. And have
taqwa of Allah through whom you ask one
another and the wounds. Surely Allah is ever
over you an observer.
In this famous narration,
Jabir,
the great companion, radhiallahu anhu a'la,
he narrates
that in this
battle
midday came, and I'm gonna combine this with
the other narrations from Bukhari and Muslim in
terms of meaning.
And it came time for us to rest,
and we found a very large tree
that was characterized by its shadiness.
And so we we left that for the
prophet Muhammad sallallahu alaihi wa sallam. He said,
you can nap here.
We'll go to someplace else.
And so he sallallahu alaihi wasallam, he takes
his sword,
his only means to defend himself seemingly, right,
from any attack,
and he finds one of the branches and
he hangs it up.
And then in full comfort and ease and
relaxation,
he falls asleep.
And in the narration from Muslim, the Nabi
salal alayhi salalam is actually He comes upon
the sahab and he tells him what happened.
And he says, I was sleeping
and then I woke up and I saw
that there was a guy at my head.
I went to sleep alone and suddenly there's
this strange man next to me. And he
says, sallallahu
alaihi wasallam, as I was coming to my
senses,
I realized that he had my sword in
his hands and it was unsheathed. He took
it out of the cover.
And as he points the sword to him,
sallallahu
alaihi wasallam,
this polytheist,
this Bedouin
says to him,
are you afraid of me?
And then Nabi salalahu alaihi wasalam with full
conviction
and full reliance upon Allah
without any hesitation he says no.
And and he and he asks him. He
because he's bewildered at this situation. I have
you right here. I could kill you right
now if I wanted to. He tells him,
who's gonna who's gonna prevent me from harming
you? Who's gonna protect you from me? I
have you right now. You're done with.
And he says, Allah.
And in one of their narrations, it says
that the man was so frightened
that he literally dropped the sword right then
and there. And then the b'lai alaihi salam
immediately picked it up, and he pointed it
at him, and he says, who's gonna who's
gonna protect you from me?
And that's when he says, please forgive me.
Please let me go. Don't kill me. And
he says, will you believe in Allah in
the last day? And me as the messenger,
he says, no. No. But I promise I
won't fight against you and I won't support
those who fight against you. So he
in in his mercy he lets him go.
And the man is narrated to have said
when he returned to his own companions,
he said, you don't know who I met.
This is the greatest man that I just
met. Salallahu alaihi wa sallam.
And although there are many wisdoms from this
hadith
and this incident that many of us are
familiar with, one huge takeaway is the Nabi
sallallahu alaihi wa sallam's tawakkul.
His complete and utter reliance upon Allah subhanahu
wa ta'ala. How he consigned all of his
affairs to Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala. Even in
that situation of seeming weakness where he literally
could not do anything, it seems
he still had faith in Allah and he
never let it go.
And the topic of the khutbah for today
is about that trust in Allah Subhanahu Wa
Ta'ala and how Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala will
suffice us through that. How he will take
care of us when we just consign our
affairs to him.
During this holiday season
is a time when many of us gather
with families,
and the issues that we had been putting
behind us that we had been avoiding suddenly
come up to light at the dinner table.
Suddenly, our cousin or our father or our
mother or our brother or our sister,
our in laws, our children,
our nieces, our nephews, when everyone comes together
something happens and issues start to arise that
we had once forgotten about.
And similarly, subhanAllah, sometimes we're in the grind.
We're working
early in the morning till late at night.
Our days are full are full of activities
that distract us.
And then when we have this free time,
the mind wanders
and we start to worry.
The covid outbreak.
Cases seem to be stalling, no increasing.
Is another lockdown looming upon us?
What is this new strand? What's happening with
the stock market? Am I going to lose
my job because of the economic turmoil that
we're experiencing?
Are my kids going to lose their faith
in Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala and stop practicing
Islam because of all of the corruption of
our times?
Will I lose my parents
to an illness that befalls them?
Am I ever going to reconcile with my
dear friend who hurt me, who betrayed me?
I'm so overwhelmed.
How can I get through this?
And in these situations, my dear brothers and
sisters, Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala
reminds us that he's there for us, reminds
us to reflect upon what's in my control
as a singular human being. One who is
going to be alone on the day of
resurrection
when neither my wife nor my husband nor
my father nor my mother nor my son
nor my daughter nor anybody in my family
will be there for me, and I'll be
utterly concerned about myself and my state. What
do I have power over now? What do
I have control over now? And to whom
can I turn in the state of difficulty,
in the state of need?
And this is where Tawakkil comes in, where
Ibnul Qayyim, rahimuallahu
ta'ala. Ibnul Qayyim Al Jaziah says in Madari
jus alikin.
He says that Tawakkil,
if you ask me what is and what
is, the seeking of assistance from Allah subhanahu
wa ta'ala, then know it is a state
of the heart that recognizes Allah subhanahu wa
ta'ala in his divine names and qualities,
and thus as a result
relies only on him knowing that only benefit
and harm can come from him. Only good
can come from him. That I am completely
and utterly powerless. And when we depend on
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, we have so many
benefits.
One of the benefits is provision.
Rasulullah salallahu alaihi salallam says that if
you rely on Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, entrust
your affairs to him as he should be
entrusted,
then he will provide for you as he
provides for the birds.
It leaves They leave in the morning,
and their stomachs are empty, and they're hungry,
and they come back satiated and completely full.
SubhanAllah.
One of the benefits of tawakkud as he
says salallahu alayhi wasalam when he describes the
70,000
who enter into Jannah without any reckoning, without
any hisab,
the last description,
And they only depend on Allah Subhanahu Wa
Ta'ala. They've reached this high lofty state of
being.
And one of the other benefits as he
says,
Whoever
depends and relies and entrust their affairs to
Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala, then Allah is enough
for them.
So completely trust in Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala
with whatever you face, with whatever is worrying
you. Have faith in what's to come, in
what Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala has written for
you and consign your affairs completely to Allah
subhanahu wa ta'ala.
Imagine if everyone were to leave you like
like the description we started with of the
day of resurrection.
Your family,
your friends,
your colleagues, your coworkers,
know that Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala will always
be there for you. Always calling upon you
and telling you to rely on him and
that he will be sufficient for you. A
couple cautionary remarks before we end
is that implies that we have to take
action.
Merely spending all day in the masjid or
at home, raising our hands in dua and
saying, you Allah bless me with risk without
seeking employment, without trying to get accredited, without
seeking
certification or education
or doing something for that matter is not
true tawakkul. But tawakkul implies that action is
taken in tandem with it at the same
time. And that means when we have this
reliance, Allah still expects from us to act
and to work to improve our affairs and
to improve our situation.
And a second
cautionary remark is that as with the flu
season coming upon us and as with COVID
spreading, may Allah protect you all and your
families.
Similar to how we seek medical expertise
about physical ailments, it could be that we're
experiencing a depression and anxiety,
stress, panic that requires professional help. And we
should never hesitate to seek that out
And lastly, when it comes to
and how to achieve it, these are just
a few practical pieces of advice that I
remind myself first and foremost, and also remind
you all as well.
1, as ibn Qayyim Al Jaziah says,
the when the heart has
of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, has knowledge of
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, then
naturally results.
So seek out learning the names and attributes
of Allah. And one of the best ways
to do that is through the Quran and
obviously through organized study with a teacher as
well.
2, engaging in stories
of Rasulullah salallahu alaihi wasallam. Sayeduna Ibrahim alaihi
salallam,
Yaqub, Yusuf, Musa's mother, the Sahaba, the priest
predecessors.
So we can see a scene in actualization
of how tawakkul looks. What is what is
it what does tawakkul look like? When we
look at those examples, we can then think
of how we can apply them in our
lives. 3, focus on what you can change
and what's in your control and leave the
rest to Allah.
Literally as we walk out of the masjid
today, anything could fall out of the sky
and harm us.
Our cars are One of the most dangerous
activities is driving home.
Anything could happen at any time. And instead
of being overwhelmed with all of these negative
possibilities
to just say, I'm gonna do what's upon
me.
I'm gonna do what's pleasing to Allah and
I'm gonna leave the rest to him.
Provides us so much comfort.
4, calling upon Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala with
sincere dua. Because when Rasulullah alaihi salallam tells
us that dua is the essence of worship,
the reason for it is that it's a
state of neediness.
It's saying, you Allah, I can't do anything
except through you, and so I call upon
you.
5. Saying,
the words of remembrance. Like
Reminding oneself in the morning and afternoon. You
Allah, you're enough for me.
There's no one worth worshiping but you. I
only rely upon you and you are the
lord of the great throne.
And from that Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala will
take care of all that distresses us, all
that worries us, all that may concern us.
6, saying,
For example, when leaving the house.
You Allah, I recognize And this is one
of the gates of the gates of Jannah,
of paradise, that there's no power
and there's no ability to change
and there's no might except through you, You
Allah. And so I recognize that.
And 7, reflecting upon
and what it means to only seek
only seek assistance from Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.
Tawakkul needs to be a part of our
daily lives and I remind myself and remind
you my dear brothers and sisters to think
about it, to reflect upon it, to actualize
it, to embody it, and to make it
a point of reflection and daily action
every single day of our lives.
