Suhaib Webb – From the Questions Bank Breastfeeding More Than Two Years

So I received a question from a woman

who her sister recently passed away or, like,

And she left a child. This child is

over 2 years old, and

she wanted to know if she could breastfeed

this child

so that child would become the to her

children

even though it was over 2 years because

we know

in the second chapter of the Quran

verse

233, I believe,

Allah

says,

The Quran says that, you know, mothers who

want to complete the time

of breastfeeding

should do so within a 2 year period,

meaning,

like that's the limit.

It's important that we understand one of the

foundations of Islam

is what's

called And one of the foundations of Islam

is achieving benefit and preventing harm from people.

Imam Ibn Qayyim said that the edifice of

Sharia rest on bringing benefit and preventing harm.

For that reason, if we go into the

books of tafsir that deal with the fiqh

of the tafsir of the Quran, it's called

akam, tafsir akam.

And

we studied this for 4

years in Al Azhar University, more than 400

ayaats of the Quran.

We find that imam

he says something very powerful. He says,

He said

increasing 2 years

or decreasing 2 years in breastfeeding

is allowed

if it will not harm the child.

Contemporary, they

explained and expounded

on the statement of and they

said it is allowed for the woman to

continue

beyond

the mother 2 years

if there is a benefit for the child

and there is a protection of harm.

So in this situation,

this woman

definitely could breastfeed this child after 2 years

because it's going to ease and facilitate the

relationship, and this child is going to need

care. This child is going to need other

family members in its life,

and that is something that the Sharia

takes seriously.

So the answer is yes.
