Respected elders,
dear brothers and sisters,
my young friends,
We begin by praising Allah
the lord of the universe,
our sustainer,
our
creator,
our
protector, our nourisher.
And we begin
by sending peace and salutations
upon his final and beloved messenger, Muhammad, the
son of
Indeed, Allah
is our lord, our master,
the one
and the only
in whose control
is every single matter in this universe.
We ask Allah
to keep us all safe and to keep
us all well and united.
My brothers and sisters,
we know that this has been a difficult
week
for many of us
and, indeed,
for many Muslims
right across the country.
When
such tragedies
and challenges strike
and
to be perfectly honest,
they will continue
to strike us in different forms
as this is the nature of this dunya.
It is important to remember that each person
is different
and each person has a different reaction.
The life of this world,
this life that Allah
has blessed us with,
he has blessed us with it for a
particular reason.
And that reason or one of those reasons,
you should say,
is that Allah
has made this life a test for us,
which means that indeed we will face challenges
and we will face struggles of different types.
And if that were not to be the
case, this would be Jannah and this would
be paradise as I have mentioned to you
before.
But Allah
has not willed for this, has not intended
for this dunya to be
Jannah for us.
The prophet
said that this world, this worldly life is
like a prison for the believer,
and it is
taken as paradise
by those who do not believe.
So if we believe in Allah
as we do,
then we know that this life is not
going to be Jannah.
And that means that there will be strife
and there will muggle and there will be
challenges of different sorts.
But what we need to remember, my brothers
and sisters,
is that when that test comes and we
ask Allah
for protection,
we do not wish
for any test to come upon us. We
do not wish for any trials and tribulations
to come upon us, and we ask Allah
for his protection.
But at the same time, we know that
it is very, very likely
that we will face some type of trial
and some type of test through the course
of our lives. May Allah
protect us and help us through whichever trials
he has destined for us.
So each of us are going to react
in different ways, specifically,
especially when we talk about
emotional reaction
and mental reaction.
And there can be
a range of emotions and feelings that we
feel when such
a tragedy strikes.
We feel sadness.
We feel grief.
You might feel angry.
You might be fearful.
You might just be confused
or perhaps other feelings as well, and that
is all normal.
You might find it difficult to concentrate or
perhaps to sleep,
maybe feeling unsettled and on edge.
And this is reaction
these these types of feelings and emotions, this
reaction is normal. Why? Because
Allah has given us hearts and minds,
which are not made of stone.
So we have feelings.
And each person based on their personality,
their aptitude,
their mental stability, their emotional stability, their past
experiences,
each one of us is unique and has
a different reaction.
One of the things or some of the
things that we can do, whenever something like
this happens, may Allah protect us, is to
limit the consumption of the details. It is
very easy to get sucked in, especially with
the news media today and the news cycle
and social media.
I'm saying this as a media person myself.
It is very easy to get
sucked into it.
So
limit
the consumption of the details. It is important
to know what is happening in the world,
but limit the consumption of the details that
offer no benefit
and that cause more harm to you personally,
emotionally, mentally, perhaps even spiritually.
It is very helpful indeed to talk to
others.
Especially during the pandemic, we are finding ourselves
isolated,
unable to meet one another,
unable to hug one another in most cases.
So talking to others,
sharing our grief, and listening to others
can be tremendously helpful. So when you find
yourself in such a situation,
reach out, talk to someone that you trust,
someone who can listen to you, or tune
in to community discussions
and talks such as this one, many other
better ones out there as well.
Engage in the zikr of Allah subhanahu wa
ta'ala, of course, with the obligatory, the prayers,
and of course the recitation of Quran, but
also especially istafar.
So Allah upon the prophet sallallahu alaihi wasallam.
Tasbir. Right? Taheel, Tahmid, SubhanAllah, Alhamdulillah, Allahu Akbar,
Astaghfirullah.
All of these things.
All of these
can help calm our hearts and our minds
because Allah
has told us and indeed Allah always speaks
the truth.
Allah
has told us that indeed
in the remembrance of Allah, do hearts
find rest. So when you feel uneasy and
settled,
feel unstable,
straight,
go to the remembrance of Allah
and you will find insha Allah,
it will help settle your emotions and your
feelings.
And if needed, cry as well. And this
goes for brothers as well as sisters.
Right? Goes for everyone.
Because a lot of times, especially the brothers,
the men, feel ashamed to cry.
Feel ashamed to cry. But listen to this.
When Ibrahim, the baby son of the prophet
sallallahu alaihi wasallam,
was passing away and he was breathing his
last. Can you imagine a young boy, a
baby,
a young young baby,
you know, breathing difficult with difficulty,
his breath leaving his soul not able to
breathe.
It made the eyes of the prophet
shed tears.
Abdul Rahmat ibn A'ouf said,
even you, you Rasulallah,
even you, you Rasulallah, even you are shedding
tears and are crying. The prophet said, oh,
this is mercy.
This is? Rahma, this is mercy. Then the
prophet
wept some more, and he said
that verily the eyes shed tears.
Verily
the eyes shed tears.
And
the heart
and the heart is grieved.
But then he said,
we will not say anything except what is
pleasing to our lord.
And then he spoke, and he said, we
are saddened by your departure, oh Ibrahim.
So
the prophet tears. The prophet
shed tears. The prophet
was saddened, and he expressed that grief. He
did not hold back his tears or think
that it was not manly for a person
to cry. So indeed, the prophet
shed tears
and said that it was a sign of
mercy.
As believers, we know, my brothers and sisters,
that the time and
place, even method
of our return to Allah
is written already.
We know that it is decided,
decreed for every single one of us.
And when that decree comes,
when that time comes,
when the time when the time comes for
that decree to be executed,
no one can stop it. No one can
stop it.
As Abu Darda
related from the prophet
that he said
that everything has a reality.
Everything
has a reality.
And the servant will not reach the reality
of iman of faith.
Until he or she knows that what afflicted
him or her could never miss him or
her, until
the believer knows
that what afflicted them could never miss them,
and that what missed them could never have
afflicted them, whether it is good or bad.
What comes to us, what strikes us, whether
positive or negative,
it was meant to be that way.
Nothing could have stopped it
either way.
So we could have put all the effort
in the world
to stop this or any other tragedy from
happening.
And indeed, we would have if we would
have known, but it was the decree of
Allah
and no one can stop the decree of
Allah
Now the question comes why.
My brothers and sisters, that is for Allah
to know. For Allah
is the most wise and the most knowledgeable.
He is the one running the test. He
gets to decide
what the challenges are, what the questions are.
Now in such moments of loss and grief,
when the grief is unimaginable,
unfathomable,
incomprehensible,
and we're not able to deal with it,
we surrender. We just surrender in front of
Allah
and in front of the decree of Allah
and we say,
Allah alone is sufficient for us, and he
is the best disposer of affairs for us.
What an excellent protector and what an excellent
helper. Allah
is. If Allah
decides otherwise,
then
we accept his decree and we accept what
Allah
has decided for us.
Our brothers, our brother and our sisters who
have returned to Allah
in this tragedy,
They have received
the honor
of being shuhada,
of being from amongst
those who are shahid. They have the honor,
the extreme, the great honor of being from
amongst the shuhada,
not just in one way
but in 3 ways,
just steps away from their home without any
effort to receive this honor, without making any
proactive efforts to receive this honor, Allah
granted them this honor.
Three ways. How? Number 1, a person who
is killed unlawfully,
a believer who is killed unlawfully
is a shahid.
One who is crushed, the prophet
has told us, one who is crushed by
something
and dies in that state, a believer who
dies by being crushed is a shahid.
And a believer who is killed
by an opponent,
by an enemy of Islam,
and is killed especially due to their Islam,
because of their faith. And that is exactly
the case in this in this tragedy.
Killed because of their iman, their Islam, their
practice of the deen of Allah Subhanahu Wa
Ta'ala, then that person is indeed a shahid.
So my brothers and sisters,
Allah
through this tragedy has rescued our brother and
our sisters from the trials and tribulations of
this world. And not just that, but has
given them
not just one level of being shahid,
but three levels,
3 different levels,
3 different honors of being a shahid.
On top of that, the prophet
has said, and indeed this will give us
comfort as well, that
The Shahid does not feel the pain
of being killed except as one of you
feels the pinch of an insect bite. Think
of a mosquito bite.
Think of an insect bite
and how it pinches, not even a serious
one that hurts. An insect bite, not like
a scorpion or a snake, but an insect
bite.
The Shahid does not feel the pain of
being killed except as one of you feels
the pinch of an insect bite.
Now my brothers and sisters,
our hearts are breaking
for the little boy
now left alone. And,
you know, every time
we think about that, the circumstances,
it and the situation, it,
it brings us to tears. It is unimaginable,
unfathomable.
Just the the the tragedy of everything, how
it happened,
how everything occurred and transpired so quickly, and
how quickly his life has been changed and
turned upside down.
My brothers and sisters,
let us remember and take comfort in this
fact that the prophet sallallahu alaihi wasallam
also had lost both of his parents
and his grandfather
at the same age.
Of course, when he was born, his father
had already passed away. His mother passed away
at when he was 6 years old. Then
his grandfather who was taking care of him
passed away
when he was 8 years old.
Allah
says,
Did he, Allah, not find you as an
orphan then sheltered you? Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala
arranged for the best upbringing, the best nurturing,
the best tarbia, the best care, the best
education for the prophet sallallahu
alaihi wa sallam, the best of creation with
the most noblest of missions
in this world.
And Allah
is undoubtedly
capable of doing the same now as well
for our little brother, for our little boy.
Our love and our duas are with him.
May Allah
shelter him and protect him
throughout the rest of his life. May Allah
grant him strength
to move through this tragedy in the best
of ways. May Allah
appoint angels
and people who are protectors
for him all around him for the rest
of his life so that he grows and
lives
with the best in every way in this
dunya and especially in the.
My brothers and sisters,
the authorities have said that this crime was
motivated by hate,
and there is no doubt that Islamophobia
is on the rise.
Justice
will be served in this in this world
and
by Allah
in this world and in the hereafter.
Now the question is, what can we do
to address the problem?
Now it is important for us to realize
that Islamophobia
is not something which is new.
Islamophobia has existed since the time of the
prophet sallallahu alaihi wasallam. Indeed, every prophet of
Allah
was a Muslim and was preaching Islam
regardless of what their followers call it today.
Every prophet of Allah
preached Islam,
and those who believed
in those prophets sincerely and in the oneness
of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala were believers were
Muslims, were believers,
and they all faced faced opposition.
There are
people who hate Islam and who hate the
followers of Islam for various reasons
for various reasons.
But
my estimation is, and I've said this many
times before, is that there is a small
group of haters who are haters to the
bone,
who are passionate about their hate, who hate
knowingly and winning willingly
and who arrogantly
hate Allah
and his messenger
and his religion.
There are those, but I believe in this
country, they are a small minority.
Then there are
many more
who are ignorant.
They do not know any better.
They are influenced by propaganda.
They are influenced
by hateful messages that this small group of
haters, of true haters,
sends to them and preys upon them to
convert them to their cause.
So they start off with ignorance,
and they are turned into haters
by that small
minority.
My brothers and sisters,
there is no question that stronger act
stronger action is absolutely desperately needed from our
political leaders, from governments, from law enforcement
and intelligence agencies.
The way they investigated
Muslims when Muslims were suspected suspected
of acts of terrorism and of violent extremism,
we need exactly
the same level of resources, of funding, of
passion, of vigor
in going against
haters,
extremists who are spreading hate
against
Canadians, against minorities,
against Muslims, and against others.
The same level
of passion and vigor and funding and resources
from the RCMP,
from CSIS,
from the government, from public safety and security,
all types of tools and tactics that were
used
against
people who are
Muslim or who are suspected of committing or
or plotting acts of terrorism.
The same vigor, the same passion, the same
resources have to go have to be channeled
into fighting
people who are spreading hate and attacking and
terrorizing Muslims and others today in this country.
And we have groups
who are speaking out. The National Council of
Canadian Muslims, may Allah
bless them, especially our brother Mustafa.
They have been working very hard, and they
are getting this message across.
Individual organizations are doing the same thing.
I had the opportunity to meet with local
MPs this week, and I conveyed the same
message.
So we are all on the same page
and are working
the best as we can.
And each of us has a responsibility
to speak out
and talk to
our leaders,
politicians,
government leaders,
agencies,
and convey
this message.
But here's the thing, my brothers and sisters.
Making hate unacceptable and going after it in
this way
is important,
but it only goes so far. Why?
Because
the feelings of hatred lie in the heart.
The misunderstandings,
the the the ill feelings,
right, they are impacting people's hearts.
And
hate, when it is targeted openly and called
out, which is important,
what does it do? It goes underground,
and it rocks, and it festers outside of
view until it pops its ugly head again
at some other time in some other way.
Therefore,
legislation
and enforcement
are important deterrents,
but
they are not cures. They're important deterrents, but
they're not cures. The cure lies in touching
people's hearts
to make them realize
that their hate is wrong,
that their hate is misguided,
and that they are misinformed.
And the most effect there's different ways of
doing this, but the most effective and the
most beautiful day way to do this is
through
the, is through being positive
and being visible and living the sunnah of
the messenger of Allah
That is the most effective and the most
beautiful way of countering Islamophobia
at a human level, at a level that
touches people's hearts
and changes them not just out of fear
of being arrested, not just
fear of being called out, but changes them
in their hearts
for good.
You know what's gonna happen? Those who are
ignorant will will soon realize the truth, Insha'Allah.
And those who are true haters
will become frustrated and will become overwhelmed. Allah
tells us in the Quran,
Good and evil cannot be equal.
Respond to evil with what is best with
that which is best.
Then the one you are in a feud
with, that you have enmity with, and that
has enmity with you, will be like a
close friend. So this, my brothers and sisters,
is a clear direction from Allah
to respond in better ways.
This doesn't mean that we walk away from
justice.
This does not mean that we don't demand
better from our political leaders and from our
from the authorities.
This does not mean that we should not
stand up for justice. We absolutely should. But
when it comes to evil that is directed
towards us,
we are going to respond
in better ways. We are going to respond
in ways
that are not going to turn people away
from Allah
and from his deen and from us, but
we are going to respond
in ways that soften hearts and that brings
people together.
I have to say, and I'm very grateful
that many faith leaders have reached
out. Many faith leaders have reached out. Many
individuals are reaching out,
sending emails, messages, receiving
flowers and cards, and this is greatly appreciated.
Rabbi from the synagogue in Alta Vista
wrote me an email soon after this incident
occurred
saying that I stand shoulder to shoulder with
our Muslim brothers and sisters, and the Jewish
community stands shoulder to shoulder with the Muslim
community.
Said I would actively
I would like to actively show my support.
Please let me know of any vigil that's
being organized in the wake of this tragedy,
and I will be there. And indeed, he
was also there when we were when we
held an event
1 year after the Quebec City Masjid shooting
as well. And he said, you and the
Muslim community are in my heart and in
my prayers. We've also received
kind, comforting messages from various faith leaders and
faith groups locally, Canada United Church, Stittsville United
Church, Saint Isidore Catholic Parish, Bells Corners United
Church, and the pastor at Brookside Baptist Church
right around the corner from us here on
Klondike Road. All of them have reached out
and have,
offered their sympathies
and their support. My brothers and sisters, we
are not alone.
We are not alone. 1st and foremost, Allah
is with us,
and
the believers around the world are with us.
And
the good, well meaning
people who are just and who are kind
are also with us as well, our friends,
our neighbors, and our colleagues.
In terms of what we need to do,
my brothers and sisters, short term actions.
If you're still feeling unsettled,
feeling uneasy,
talk to someone who can listen to you
and who can comfort you. It is natural
to feel afraid. It is natural. And especially
I I've said this before. I salute our
sisters
who go out in public
wearing the hijab,
visibly Muslim,
perhaps wearing niqab as well, wearing abayas, wearing
clothing
which clearly identifies them as believers as Muslims.
The brothers many time get away with it.
Right? I try not to, but many times
brothers will get away with it. Right? But
our sisters
who are following the guidance of Allah and
his messenger
or even trying to or even wanting to
and then are not finding themselves able to
do it. I salute every single one of
them because it is not easy. It is
not easy to go out there as symbols
of Islam,
as visible, clearly visible Muslims,
especially in such an environment.
So it is not may Allah Subhanahu Wa
Ta'ala protect all of us but especially our
sisters. May Allah
bless them and increase them
in their goodness. May Allah
grant that all of us and especially all
of you sisters' steadfastness.
May Allah
bless you and protect you always.
So it is natural, my brothers and sisters,
to feel afraid. But at the same time,
know that if we run, if we hide,
we will be showing that Islamophobia
works.
If we hide ourselves
think about this. If we hide ourselves,
if we change ourselves
because of what one terrorist, one Islamophobe, or
a group of haters
want us to do, then we are
accepting their demands.
We are showing that Islamophobia works.
And do we want to do that?
Yes. It is important to be cautious.
Take precautions.
Place your trust in Allah
and know that whatever Allah has willed will
happen no matter what.
And if Allah has not willed it, it
will never happen no matter what anyone wants
to do.
So be cautious. Take precautions
physically, spiritually,
but go out.
Be visible. Brothers
as well,
Take walks with your family.
Live your life.
And if we don't, we
yes. I understand. Initially, it may be difficult
to push ourselves to do this
when it has been, you know, when this
tragedy is so close to us.
But as time goes on, as we move
forward,
let us
gather the courage
to go back
and to be ourselves
and to live
our lives
as good Muslims and also, of course, as
good citizens and good residents
of our societies.
Exercise
continues to be important,
especially for the mind at such times. So
please be sure that you are getting exercise
and that you are getting fresh air with
your family.
Recite duas for precaution, for protection.
Prophet
said anyone who recites this 3 times in
the morning, 3 times in the evening, no
harm will touch them. And there are many
other duas, Ayatul Kursi, many others as well.
So
rely upon
the protection of Allah
and continue
to rely upon it and have trust in
Allah
Build connections as well, and this is
medium to long term.
It is so important that we are connected
with our neighbors, with our colleagues, with our
classmates
so that we remove the misconceptions.
We help them understand the reality of who
we are and what our religion is about
so that when the haters try to convince
them, they're able to turn away from that
and say, no. It's not possible.
It's not possible.
I don't believe it. Right? Because I know
firsthand
what Muslims are like. I know firsthand
what lived Islam is like in this society
by Muslims today.
Right? So it is so important that we
are well connected
to remove the misconceptions, to remove the fear
of the other.
Right? People think of the other, especially when
they don't know others. When they get to
know others and that fear of others go
away and they start to see the commonalities
even with our differences. We will always have
these differences. We will all will always disagree
on things,
but we can still get to know one
another. We can still live positively
and and and and with each other in
good ways. We can still be good neighbors.
And indeed, that is what our messenger, sallallahu
alaihi wasalam, the messenger of Allah, sallallahu alaihi
wasalam, has taught us.
So reach people's hearts, as an example, a
small effort on our part is the caravan
of joy that we do on every.
When we go out and surprise
various people, various, you know, players, important contributors
in our communities, in our societies. This time,
of course, we did the the health care
workers at the COVID clinics and the vaccine
clinics. You know, we've gone to the the
hydro workers after the tornadoes and and when
they worked really, really hard to reconnect everyone.
We've gone to the paramedics and the police
officers, the first responders, the firefighters.
Right? These
are people that we have tried to reach
through our caravan and have joined. This is
just one example.
So think of initiatives, think of things that
you can do
to help
foster understanding and build connections
and to touch people's hearts.
So live Islam
publicly in a manner that is a mercy
to those around you. Live Islam
publicly in a manner that is a mercy
towards
those around you because indeed the prophet
was not sent except as a mercy
to all people.
Now on that note, my brothers and sisters,
there are community members who have organized
walks
in solidarity of our community,
in solidarity of their Muslim neighbors in different
Kanata North neighborhoods.
This is happening on Sunday
Two walks at 5 PM and also at
7:40 PM. And the timing 7:40 PM is
symbolic because it is 1 week after the
incident as it occurred around that time, 8:30,
8:40 PM.
So 2 walks or 2 times for multiple
walks in Kanata North. Details are on our
Facebook page. We are not organizing it, but
we are part of it and we are
supporting it. So please do participate. Walk with
your neighbors for peace. The link is on
our Facebook page. If you go there, you
will find the link to the details.
So please do join with your family. We
also have a park cleanup. For those of
you who don't know, we, the Canada Muslim
Association, has sponsored or adopted a park right
around the corner from us, across from South
Morge Public School. And the sign says, you
know, Canada Muslim Association, it is our responsibility
to clean it at least twice a year.
So inshallah, we will be having one of
those cleanings, the spring cleaning. Well, it's getting
into summer now, but it was closed due
to COVID. The cleanings were not happening due
to COVID, but now they have reopened. So
inshallah, Sunday as well at 11 AM, that
park cleanup will be happening. Everyone is welcome,
so bring your family. Of course, we will
follow COVID protocols and keep a distance with
others, but come 11 AM Sunday morning Insha
Allah, Brookshire Park, right across from South Marsh
Public School, and then also we have the
walks that we'll be joining in the afternoon
as well. My brothers and sisters, let us
make dua for, for our brother and our
sisters
who are,
who are the shuhada
and, for indeed for all of those who
have returned to Allah.
A very sad note,
the great scholar of Islam,
of the of the current age, Sheikh Taha
Karan,
has passed away.
He was fighting COVID 19 in South Africa.
And he is, the esteemed, teacher
of my of my close and respected colleague,
Imam Owaistili Abdul Jabbar. So we extend our
heartfelt condolences to him and all of it
all of our fellow,
leaders and scholars,
upon the passing of this great giant, Shafi'i,
scholar in South Africa.
For for all of those who have returned
to Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala.
Oh Allah, oh Allah, please shower your mercy
and your forgiveness upon them, You Rabbi alameen.
Oh Allah, oh Allah, please accept all of
the good that they did, oh Allah, and
increase it manifold, You Rabbi alameen. Oh Allah,
please elevate their ranks and grant them the
best place in Jannat Infirdos, You Rabbal Alameen.
Oh Allah, oh Allah,
please grant
them protection in their graves, You Rabbal Alameen.
Oh Allah, please grant them the gifts of
Jannah, You Rabbal Alameen. Oh, Allah. Oh, Allah.
Please unite them with all of their
past ancestors.
Oh, Allah. Oh, Allah. Please grant relief to
all of the loved ones who are grieving
at this time.
Oh, Allah,
especially the young boy. Oh, Allah, our hearts
break for him. Oh, Allah, please grant him
your special protection
and your special care and nurturing for the
next rest of his life.
Oh, Allah, please surround him with angels and
with people who will continue to care for
him and and and and look out for
him
at every step of his life, You Rabbi
Alameen. Oh Allah, please grant him the best
nurturing, the best education,
the best of khalaq. Oh Allah, the best
of love, the best of care, and the
best of protection,
Oh Allah. Oh Allah. Please cure all of
those who are ill.
Oh Allah. There continue to be many people,
our brothers and sisters in faith and humanity,
who are struggling with COVID 19, with other
illnesses, cancer, and many other illnesses and hardships.
Oh Allah, please cure them all You Rabbil
Alameen. Oh Allah, indeed you are the cure.
Oh Allah, indeed as we have seen with
the people that we have made dua for,
Oh Allah, some of them you cured with
your through your power and your mercy You
Rabbil Alameen. Oh Allah, please cure all of
them You Rabbil Alameen. Oh Allah, please grant
them relief from their hardships and their pain,
