As-salāmu ʿalaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuhu There
is none worthy of worship except Allah Come
to success Allah is the greatest, Allah is
the greatest There is none worthy of worship
except Allah I
bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of
Allah One
of the greatest questions in life for a
believing Muslim is to ask themselves what they
want to leave behind in their legacy After
we are gone, after our physical bodies cease
to exist in this dunya, what type of
legacy, what type of remaining memories do we
want to leave behind in this dunya for
the people that knew us and for the
people that may not have known us There
is so much written about the concept of
death in Islam that ulama not only used
to obviously remember and recall the hadith of
the Prophet ﷺ But there was also even
poetry that was written about the idea of
death Death is not something that believers are
necessarily afraid of In fact Imam Al-Ghazali
talks about death as a journey, a journey
that one must take between this dunya and
their next life And all the journey's goal
is for the believer to eventually meet Allah
ﷻ It is an exciting journey for the
believer And some of the ulama they even
wrote poems about this idea They said, أشتاق
إليك يا قريب النائي شوق الضماء إلى الزلال
المائي They would say that the sinner yearns
for death, Oh near one, قريبا This person
calls it something that's close, a close friend
Just like a person who's thirsty, they yearn
for a sip of water, a sip of
cool water on a difficult and hot day
When we look at this concept of mortality,
We all ask ourselves this very fundamental question
If I had one day or one week
left to live, how would I live that
week?
And subhanAllah, one of the most important things
for a believer to do When they ask
themselves, well what would I do?
If I had one week, if I had
a few days remaining, how would I spend
that week?
How would I spend those few days?
When you look back at the tradition of
the Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم You see
that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم His
final week of life in this dunya was
an incredibly legendary one One that was filled
with so many narrations from so many different
companions Because they all had their own unique
experience of the final seven days of the
Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم In fact, the
beginning of the final days of the Prophet
صلى الله عليه وسلم's life One of the
narrations that was most famously recorded Was by
a freed slave by the name of Abu
Muwayhibah رضي الله عنه He didn't have many
narrations to his name He had one that
was extremely extremely well known And that was
that he was watching the Prophet صلى الله
عليه وسلم He was guarding the Prophet صلى
الله عليه وسلم in one of these final
weeks And the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم,
by the way, in his final few weeks
of life He had a very difficult time
sleeping properly He was always tossing and turning
عليه الصلاة والسلام And so one of these
evenings in which he was having trouble sleeping
He got out of his bed and he
saw Abu Muwayhibah رضي الله عنه And he
said, Ya Abu Muwayhibah, why don't you come
with me?
I have a journey for us to embark
upon And Abu Muwayhibah gladly followed the Prophet
صلى الله عليه وسلم And he found out
that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم was
guiding him towards Al-Baqi Al-Baqi Al
-Gharqad is what they call it The cemetery
in which so many of the companions of
the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم were buried
Three of his own daughters, one of his
sons was buried in Al-Baqi And so
the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم, he went
to Al-Baqi And he made dua for
all of those who had passed away And
he looks at the graves and he starts
to speak to himself a little bit And
Abu Muwayhibah says that I heard the Prophet
صلى الله عليه وسلم tell Ya O inhabitants
of the grave, O those of you who
have gone before me You are in a
much better place than we are The trials
and the fitan, the tribulations will come swiftly
and severely And each one will be greater
than the one that preceded it He was
speaking to the people in the grave And
then he turns to Abu Muwayhibah رضي الله
عنه and he says Ya Abu Muwayhibah, Allah
سبحانه وتعالى has given me a choice To
continue to live in this dunya Or to
accept my mortality and also accept my place
in the hereafter And Abu Muwayhibah رضي الله
عنه was so moved by this statement That
he begged and pleaded to the Prophet صلى
الله عليه وسلم I will give anything Ya
Rasulullah, my own family even Just stay with
us Ya Rasulullah And the Prophet صلى الله
عليه وسلم, he looks at Abu Muwayhibah and
he says O my dear companion, I have
chosen to meet Allah سبحانه وتعالى But the
interesting part of this story is that the
Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم Used to speak
about death so often to his companions Even
a person like Abu Muwayhibah رضي الله عنه
He thought that this was just a general
reminder the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم was
giving him Until after that day, the Messenger
صلى الله عليه وسلم Began to go through
some severe trials in his health His fever
was greater than it ever has been before
He had such a headache, such pain in
his own head That people had to basically
wrap a cloth, a piece of cloth around
his forehead And tighten it to the point
where they could no longer tighten it any
further But he would still complain about the
pain And at this time, he was staying
a little bit further away from the masjid,
from his own masjid He was staying in
the home of Maymunah رضي الله عنه She
was one of the final wives that he
married in his life And he asked her
and some of his other family members Ya
Maymunah, is it okay if I go and
spend the next few days in the home
of Sayyidina Aisha رضي الله عنها And all
of us who've had the blessing of visiting
Madinatul Munawwara We know that Sayyidina Aisha رضي
الله عنها's home is something that borders the
actual masjid At that time, the only thing
that separated the home of Aisha رضي الله
عنها And the actual musalla of the Prophet
صلى الله عليه وسلم was just a curtain
And so he knew that there was something
going on this week I'm feeling more mortal
than I ever felt And this is something
that each one of us سبحان الله When
we get certain signs and symptoms in our
daily lives We realize and we're brought back
to our own mortality We go and visit
somebody who may be sick or ill We
go and attend a janazah We hear or
we see on our phones the news of
a person who may have passed away And
we think to ourselves, this can happen to
me This can happen to me I was
talking to some of the college students last
night in Roots When we drive by a
car accident When we're driving down a highway
A believer should not just go by and
say Well, I'm not gonna think about that
really A believer should drive by and say
Allah could have easily made that me Allah
could have easily called my name back right
now But Allah chose to spare me for
some reason in His infinite wisdom But my
mortality has to be acknowledged And so the
Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم from that week
He began to prepare He began to beautifully
prepare for his departure from this dunya He
began by telling Abu Bakr As-Siddiq رضي
الله عنه Ya Abu Bakr, you are going
to be the one that is going to
replace me In terms of my imamat in
the community In the musalla When it's time
for salah, you will be the one that
leads Aisha رضي الله عنها She said to
her husband, the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم
Ya Rasulullah, my father Abu Bakr His heart
is so soft If he goes and he
stands in your place He will completely be
in tears He won't even be coherent His
salah will not be able to be understood
by the people behind him And the Prophet
صلى الله عليه وسلم says No, I want
Abu Bakr As-Siddiq In fact, there was
a particular narration Where Abdur Rahman Ibn Auf
رضي الله عنه He was standing in the
saf, in the first line Saf al-awwal
And the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم was
not present in the salah Bilal رضي الله
عنه He called the adhan one time And
Bilal رضي الله عنه he said I have
never called the adhan in the masjid of
the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم In which
after I finished and I turned around and
he wasn't there So when I finished my
adhan and I turned around And I didn't
see the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم Bilal
رضي الله عنه In one of the only
narrations he mentions That I made the adhan
twice that day Because I didn't see him
And so when we were all kind of
in a panic What do we do?
Abdur Rahman Ibn Auf رضي الله عنه He
looks at Umar Ibn Khattab who was in
the first row And he said, Ya Umar,
you go ahead Go ahead And when Umar
رضي الله عنه He turned around and he,
just like any other imam would Told the
lines to straighten up Make sure that you're
foot to foot Make sure that there's no
major gaps between you and the person next
to you The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم
from behind the curtain said No, I want
Abu Bakr And so then Abu Bakr he
stepped up And Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه
He prayed and he led salah like this
For the next several days And so the
Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم Whenever he could
muster up the energy To go pray in
his own masjid He would call two people
to help him Fadl Ibn Al-Abbas His
family member And Ali رضي الله عنه His
own cousin They would go stand next to
the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم And they
would put him in the middle And they
would almost carry him to the salawat And
finally in the middle of the week The
Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم He showed up
to the salah But he was so physically
in pain And when he came Abu Bakr
صلى الله عليه وسلم he saw him And
he immediately wanted to sit back down And
said Ya Rasulullah no you go ahead of
me And the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم
He motioned to Abu Bakr No no you
stay ahead I'll sit next to you And
after Abu Bakr صلى الله عليه وسلم He
led that salah that day The Prophet صلى
الله عليه وسلم He slowly but surely Stepped
up onto the minbar It was three steps
The majority of riwayat mentioned Three steps he
climbed and he sat down And he addressed
his community For the first time in that
week And he said to his people He
says Oh The nobles Of the migrants Those
who came from Mecca to Medina He said
you will find An increase in your numbers
The Ansar will not witness This increase in
their numbers like you will But make no
mistake The Ansar Are my people The Ahlul
Medina The people of Medina they are my
people So be good to my Ansar Those
of them who are good Reward them for
their good Those of them who have made
mistakes Forgive them and overlook their faults Be
good to my Ansar And then he looks
At the rest of his Ummah and he
says Ya Jama' Allah has given his slave
A choice in this world To choose this
dunya Or to choose the Akhira And I
have chosen the Akhira And several of the
other Sahaba they thought again That the Prophet
Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam Was speaking almost in a
mode of a teacher He would constantly give
Durus and reminders About the importance of the
hereafter But Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq radiAllahu Anhu
At that moment knew that something was different
And Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq radiAllahu Anhu He
began to cry so much And sob so
much At this reminder That the Prophet Sallallahu
Alaihi Wasallam He had to tell Abu Bakr
Ya Abu Bakr gather yourself together And so
after the Salat was over He went back
with Fadl Ibn Al-Abbas And Ali Ibn
Abi Talib Back to his home And after
this process Everyone knew That And it was
a Sunday afternoon Everyone knew that there was
something going on With the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi
Wasallam And at this point There was a
narration from a man by the name of
Usama bin Zayd radiAllahu Anhu He said that
his condition had gotten so bad That he
could barely open his eyes And he said
That I went to say Salam to the
Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam And he didn't have
any energy to even get up And speak
to me But he did something very special
He opened his eyes And he raised his
hands Like this When you make Dua And
he pointed to me He did this and
then he pointed to me And Usama bin
Zayd he said I knew at that moment
the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam Was telling me
that he was making Dua for me And
that's all that I needed And From then
on Aisha radiAllahu Anhu It was Sunday evening
And people visited him Until Maghrib of that
Sunday And then after Maghrib Everybody in the
community knew that it was time For his
own privacy with himself and his family And
Aisha radiAllahu Anhu She said that we were
all Sitting around the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam
That Sunday evening after Maghrib And one by
one Our family members came and they sat
with The Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam and they
were crying with him As he was speaking
to them as much as he could And
then finally One person came to the door
And Sayyidina Aisha She says that it's as
though The entire seas parted themselves for this
person When this person Came to the door
It was Fatima radiAllahu Anhu The daughter of
the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam And when Fatima
radiAllahu Anhu came to the door The Prophet
Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam Gestured her to come close
to him And she came And she came
close to her father And she leaned in
towards him For a hug, for an embrace
And she began to weep And cry and
shake From something that he said But then
a few moments later There was a smile
that broke across her face RadiAllahu Anhu And
so Aisha radiAllahu Anhu She out of curiosity
She went up to Fatima and she said
Ya Fatima what was it That the Prophet
Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam told you That in the
beginning it made you cry Like a child
And then later on it made you smile
As though you were the happiest person in
the world And Fatima radiAllahu Anhu She said
that The first thing he said to me
Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam was That indeed I am
dying right now I am passing away right
now I don't have much time left But
he said that What made me smile was
That He leaned into me and said Oh
Fatima in the hereafter When we're all joined
back together You will be the first person
that I'm going to call towards me And
she said I smiled like I've never smiled
before in my life And SubhanAllah this was
the famous Incident in which we get the
narration That the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam He
knew that he was going to pass away
this year Because Jibril radiAllahu Anhu He used
to review Quran with the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi
Wasallam Once a year every Ramadan And this
particular year Jibril radiAllahu Anhu Reviewed Quran twice
with the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam So he
knew This year there was something different And
that night That Sunday going into Monday The
Sahaba radiAllahu Anhu They said it was the
most Strangest evening in the entire city of
Medina Everybody Packed inside The Musalla in which
the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam used to pray
Hundreds of people Packing inside the Masjid Overflowing
And each one of them They were thinking
to themselves What if I don't see the
Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam after this And they
all went into a panic And they were
asking themselves Do you remember the last thing
he told you What was the last thing
he told you When was the last time
you saw him There was murmur across the
crowds And then all of a sudden SubhanAllah
Something very special happened The curtain that separated
The home of Aisha and the Masjid It
opened just a little bit And the Prophet
Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam He showed his blessed Face
to his Ummah one last time And each
and every Companion that was sitting inside of
that Masjid that day They swore that the
Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam made eye contact with
him At that moment He looked at me
And the person next to him Says he
also looked at me And he just smiled
And then after he made eye contact With
every single person SubhanAllah, think about the love
The muhabbat that the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam
had I want everyone To know that I
care about them I want everyone to know
that they mean Something to me Everyone has
their own special story with me And then
After he looked at everybody He pushed the
curtain again And that was the final time
that the Ummah saw the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi
Wasallam As a whole And he went back
into his own house with Aisha RadhiAllahu Anha
And after Fajr, his condition had gotten so
Severe that Sayyidina Aisha RadhiAllahu Anha She said
that I noticed that his breathing Became labored
for the first time And at that moment
He was saying Something to himself And she
said that My brother Abdur Rahman, he knocked
at the door And he came in And
she saw me holding the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi
Wasallam On my lap And he said Oh,
I didn't know if this was a private
time or not And the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi
Wasallam gestured him to come in And he
saw a Siwak in my In my pocket,
in my shirt And he gestured me to
Come closer, to give me the The stick,
the toothbrush But he was so weak That
he could not actually chew it himself Before
using it So he asked his wife Aisha
RadhiAllahu Anha To chew it for him So
she chewed on the siwak And she gave
it to him And he began to slowly
brush his teeth He slowly began to brush
his teeth And he began to make a
dua SubhanAllah that was recorded in Bukhari And
Muslim He said Allahumma ghfir li warhamni Wal
hikni bil rafiq al ala He kept on
Repeating this over and over again Oh Allah
forgive me, bestow your mercy upon me And
let me join With the exalted companions Allahumma
rafiq al ala Allah You are my greatest
friend Allow me to meet you very soon
And as he said this She said That
I noticed that There was a bull next
to us And he lowered his hand And
I had assumed That he was going to
rinse the brush And move it back up
But then he lowered his hand And I
noticed that that hand never came back up
And I looked down And the Prophet Sallallahu
Alaihi Wasallam had passed And at that moment
She said that I needed a person to
come in So I held him for a
bit of time As he laid on me
On my lap And I needed someone to
come And help me move his body off
So he could lay in his place And
Abu Bakr al Siddiq radiallahu anhu Was not
present at the exact time Of the death
of the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam He came
back and he saw in the house That
something had happened When he came into the
house He looked at his beloved friend His
friend and his son-in-law And he
looked at him and he said Ya Rasulallah
You are beautiful in life And you are
just as beautiful in your death And when
this announcement was made To the public, Umar
ibn Khattab radiallahu anhu Was so distraught That
he did not Want to accept this news
that the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam Had passed
away But Abu Bakr al Siddiq radiallahu anhu
Displayed at that moment One of the greatest
signs of Iman that has ever been witnessed
In the history of humanity At that moment
Abu Bakr al Siddiq began to recite An
ayah from Surah Al Imran And he said
وَمَا مُحَمَّدٌ إِلَّا رَسُولٌ قَدْ خَلَتْ مِنْ قَبْلِهِ
الرُّسُولِ That the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam Is
a messenger before whom Many other messengers had
come and gone And he said For those
of you who worship Muhammad Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam
Know that the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam is
no longer with us But those of you
Who worship Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala Know
that Allah is alive And He will never
die You make your decision And I want
to point out something very clear here This
was the same man That 4 or 5
days ago Whenever he would lead Salah People
wouldn't be able to understand him Because of
how distraught he was at the thought of
the Prophet dying And then at the death
of the Prophet Allah gave him Courage and
strength That was not seen in any other
person that day What does that tell you?
It tells you That the believer When push
comes to shove The believer Their Iman shows
In the most sincere moment When it's needed
the most It shows Brothers and sisters I
wanted to share this narration with you And
I went through a very brief synopsis of
it There's a lot more detail But I
want everyone to think to themselves This was
the final 5 to 7 days in the
life of the Messenger Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam If
it was your final 5 to 7 days
Ask yourself How would you spend it?
Ask yourself What broken ties Would you amend?
Ask yourself How many Salawat did we miss
That we should hasten to make up Ask
yourself What Duas did I forget to make
That I should make Before Allah calls me
back to him Ask yourself What things that
I should have done Did I not do
But if I know that Allah will take
me away soon I will rush to do
those things as soon as I can The
Prophet Had an immensely Glorious life But the
last 7 days Of his life truly showed
you who he was Although he was in
pain He was suffering He was ill His
focus and goal constantly Was His Ummah and
their connection to Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala
And the Prophet Didn't want people to sit
and mourn After his death He wanted people
to get up Continue on And live through
his legacy By continuing to engage In their
Salat To engage in their Quran To engage
in their Dua To engage in their Dhikr
That's what he would have wanted So now
in your own life I want everyone to
think How would you spend it And how
would you want people To remember you After
your time in this Dunya We ask Allah
Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala To give us an
honourable ending We ask Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta
'ala To allow us to be people of
Islam And people of Ihsan And people of
Iman Ameen I will
end it inshallah With just a small one
minute reminder And this is not my reminder
This is a reminder from a scholar That
came a long time before us Imam Ghazali
Rahimahullah He said that death is but a
journey To Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala And
that connects you from this life Into your
next life And in that journey a person
prepares Three things, number one is provisions For
the road, just like any other journey Number
two Is cutting off Anything that will hold
you back From starting that journey And number
three is a gift For the host when
you see them And he says beautifully Just
like this, the journey From this life to
your next Is exactly the same The provisions
you take with you on the road From
this life into the next life Is your
taqwa Your consciousness of Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta
'ala Your knowledge that Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta
'ala Has always been there for you And
Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala will be there
To receive you in the next Number two
is cutting off Things that will hold you
back From beginning that journey And he says
this is a believer Acknowledging that this dunya
is extremely Extremely limited And extremely finite One
who is in love with this dunya Will
never ever be able to prepare themselves For
the reality of death One has to detach
themselves From being in love With everything around
them And ready to accept that my true
life Is actually the one that awaits me
And number three He says is a gift
A gift for the one who will be
hosting you And that is Allah Subhanahu Wa
Ta'ala And what is that gift we
take with us?
He says that gift is your Iman Iman
is something in this dunya They will not
always be able to show On your sleeves
Sometimes Iman is deep within the heart And
that is what Iman is supposed to be
Your actions may indicate it once in a
while But true Iman is always most beautiful
When it is found within the heart And
on the day of judgment Is finally the
moment in which you present Your Iman to
Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala And you're able
to tell him Ya Allah I spent my
60 years of life My 40 years of
life My 50 years of life Sometimes even
less My 30 years of life And I
didn't have the chance to always show my
Iman But I had it deep within And
I completed my actions accordingly But today Ya
Allah I want to present to you this
gift And this gift is the Iman that
you have given me We ask Allah Subhanahu
Wa Ta'ala To allow us to be
people of Taqwa We ask Allah Subhanahu Wa
Ta'ala To allow us to be people
whose aspirations Are truly in the hereafter And
we ask Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala To
allow us to be people of utmost Iman
