As-salamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu.
I would be blessed to marry Ibn al
-Shaytan al-Rajeem.
Bismillah ar-Rahman ar-Rahim.
Alhamdulillahi rabbil alameen.
Wa al-'udwana illa ala al-dhalimeen.
Wa al-'aqibatu lil-mutaqeem.
Allahumma salli wa sallim wa baraka ala abdika
wa rasulika muhammadin.
Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.
Wa ala alihi wa sahbihi.
Wa sallamu tasliman katheera.
We want to welcome you all back to
the first.
Alhamdulillah rabbil alameen.
We are now on episode 149.
Insha'Allah ta'ala.
Tonight we will be covering a very special
companion.
And next week, bi-idhnillah, we'll be covering
episode 150.
Another companion that many people have not heard
of.
And then insha'Allah ta'ala, we will
be breaking for a different series.
Which I'll talk about bi-idhnillah ta'ala
in the days to come.
But as we've been speaking about people that
have been coming to the Prophet sallallahu alayhi
wa sallam in a'am al-wufud.
In the year of the delegations.
We're kind of getting towards the end of
his life sallallahu alayhi wa sallam in terms
of some of these companions that came from
outside.
And understanding a bit of the dynamics around
that.
And so what I wanted to do in
these last two lectures for this season in
particular.
Was talk about two people who brought with
them a very notable presence from the area
that they came.
And alhamdulillah rabbil alameen, as we've covered many
of these chiefs.
You'll notice that the geography starts to sort
of build out.
So you have a greater understanding of the
spread of Islam through multiple lens.
But today is a very beautiful companion in
every way.
Literally noted for his beauty, radiallahu ta'ala
anhu.
And he is as al-imam al-dhahabi
rahimahullah says Jarir ibn Abdillah al-bajali.
And he describes him as a person.
He says malik al-bajali, the king of
the bajalis.
So the bajali tribe.
Jarir ibn Abdillah radiallahu ta'ala anhu.
And he describes him as kana badi' al
-husl, kamil al-jamal.
He was a man of incredible character.
Unlike anything that anyone had heard of before.
Kamil al-jamal, of perfection in his beauty.
Of perfection in his creation.
So the man that we're going to speak
about today is another one of those Abu
Bakras.
Abu Bakra gets lost because of Abu Bakr.
Jarir ibn Abdillah gets lost because of Jabir
ibn Abdillah.
A lot of people just simply conflate those
two names.
But if you're reading in the books of
hadith, there are over a hundred hadith from
this one particular companion.
And he has an incredible story with the
Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.
So as he's described as a malik, as
someone who is a king.
He's not at the level of Adi ibn
Hatim, or at the level of Thumama, or
some of these other companions that we've described.
But when you talk about the Bajali tribe,
you are talking about a collection of tribes
from Yemen.
So he's particularly a Yemeni king, and there
are a bunch of sub-tribes that come
under his tribe, and they happen to be
fractured at the time that he embraced Islam
with the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.
But when he embraces Islam, nonetheless, you have
a couple of thousand or so that belong
to the overall parent tribe that he is
in charge of.
So it is significant, but he's not one
of those big players that we've been speaking
about before in terms of the political situation.
However, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam sent
who to Yemen?
Who did the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam
send to Yemen to call them to Islam?
Mu'adh ibn Jabir radiyallahu ta'ala anhu.
And after Mu'adh, the interest is spreading,
especially along the route from Medina to Yemen,
and even Mecca to Yemen at that point,
after Fath Mecca, the news is starting to
get around.
And so some of these tribes are starting
to come to the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa
sallam to embrace Islam.
Some of them, as we said, undoubtedly there
is a political slant to it, right, which
is look, this is clearly the dominant force
in the area right now, let's ally ourselves
to the dominant political force.
Jarir radiyallahu ta'ala anhu is someone who
comes to the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam
not like Adi ibn Hatim radiyallahu anhu not
running away, but someone whose genuine interest in
Islam went up from Yemen, he heard about
Islam he immediately decided to come embrace Islam
with the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam and
he brings with him 150 people from Yemen
to embrace Islam with the Messenger sallallahu alayhi
wa sallam.
Now let's kind of play this out inshallah
ta'ala as if you are him.
It's Ramadan in the last year of the
Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam's life.
Jarir, according to some narrations, will only get
to be with the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa
sallam for 40 days.
40 days, over 100 hadiths, alright, but he's
catching the very end of the blessed life
of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.
It's Ramadan, the last year, I mean you
can imagine how crowded Masjid al-Nabawi is,
and what the vibe of Medina is like.
Allahumma ballighna Ramadan, may Allah allow us to
live to see Ramadan with the largest community
that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam ever
had where the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam
had a situation as Aisha radiallahu anha said
that the Masjid walls were about to break.
Right, burst from the amount of people that
were there in these blessed Ramadan nights.
And he is a man, as we said
just to give you the appearance because it
directly ties to how the Prophet sallallahu alayhi
wa sallam will describe him.
According to Umar bin al-Khattab radiallahu ta
'ala anhu qala Umar jareerun yusufu hadihil ummah.
Jareer is the Yusuf of this ummah.
And he was very clear what he meant.
Jareer radiallahu ta'ala anhu was distinctly handsome.
He was someone radiallahu ta'ala anhu, it
was as if he was molded in perfection.
That's how he's described.
He was so tall that he would reach
the hump of the camel when he would
stand up.
So you talk about a very imposing presence
too.
A beautiful and imposing presence.
Said that his shoe size was like the
elbow to the fingertips.
Obviously there's a bit of an exaggeration there.
But I mean he has, Allah knows best
how much is an exaggeration, right?
But the point is that a very very
imposing presence radiallahu ta'ala anhu.
He had a beautiful saffron dye to his
beard and when he walked into a room
radiallahu ta'ala anhu, all eyes immediately went
to him.
Radiallahu ta'ala anhu.
So, how does this work when he embraces
Islam?
Jareer radiallahu ta'ala anhu says
من المدينة when I was coming forth to
Medina and I had a hundred fifty of
my tribesmen.
He said that I took to a corner
and I got off of my camel and
he says that I beautified myself.
I wore my best clothes.
Basically I got ready for the moment of
meeting the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam.
He said so I entered
into the masjid.
The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam was giving khutbah.
And while the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam was
speaking and Jareer enters into the back of
the masjid.
That everyone stopped and
turned around and looked at me.
So everyone was staring at me and the
Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam he stopped talking.
So think about that awkward silence.
It's like when Kairi came to the masjid
today.
That's how y'all were.
Everyone stops and goes what?
So all eyes turned towards Jareer.
So Jareer says to himself this could either
be really good or really bad.
So before he approaches the Prophet sallallahu alayhi
wasallam he said that I said to someone
He said
He said yes the
Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam mentioned you in the
best of ways.
While he was in
the middle of his khutbah.
Suddenly in the middle of his khutbah the
Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam stopped.
And he said إنه سيدخل عليكم من هذا
He said the
best of Yemen is about to walk through
the door.
The best of Yemen is about to walk
through the door.
And
verily his face it's like he's been touched
by an angel.
تعالى عنه and the fact that خير ذي
It's a heavy statement.
The best of Yemen.
I mean you have in your congregation people
from the Ansar subhanallah.
Of course the Ansar are originally from Yemen.
But people from Yemen that are of an
incredible posture that have embraced Islam.
Incredible status.
And obviously the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam when
he calls someone the best of Yemen.
He's not just talking about his physical presence.
Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam is praising what he
knows of the heart and the akhlaq.
The heart and the character of Jarir.
And he never met him before.
This is the beauty of it.
The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam has not met
him yet.
And the ulama mention that clearly if the
Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam is going to stop
in the middle of a khutbah قَدْ جَاءَهُ
It could be that Jibril alayhi wasallam
came to him and told him that by
the way someone's outside he's about to enter
into the masjid.
And gave him that presence or gave him
that description.
And his face was wiped by the hand
of an angel.
It's something that has incredible blessing to it.
So he says that I entered.
Everyone stopped.
Looked at me.
I asked the guy.
And this shows you how big the masjid
has gotten at this point.
I asked the person.
I said, did he say something about me?
He said he spoke good about you.
And this is what he said about you.
Anas sallallahu alayhi wasallam says in another narration.
Some of the scholars say that this is
the same incident.
So it's either the initial embrace of Islam
or another incident.
But he says
That we were with the Prophet
sallallahu alayhi wasallam and then Jirir entered and
people were holding on to their spot next
to the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam فَلَمْ يُوَسِّعْ
And no one made space for
him.
Now this also shows you the growth of
the community.
This is the last Ramadan with the Prophet
sallallahu alayhi wasallam They are crowded around the
Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam.
No one's moving from their spot for anybody
else.
So they kind of look at him in
the back but at the same time we're
not losing this closeness, this proximity we have
to the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wasallam
So the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam
Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam took
off his cloak and he threw it, tossed
it towards Jirir and he told him to
come close and he says
Come close O Abu'am He said
Sit on the cloak that I
just threw to you Like what a way
to honor someone right So not only make
space for him He said go ahead and
sit on this cloak فَتَلَقَاهَا بِصَدْرِهِ وَنَحْرِهِ So
Jirir took that cloak and he held it
close to him and he said أَكْرَمَكَ اللَّهُ
May Allah honor
you O Messenger of Allah as you have
honored me and he started to kiss the
cloak and touch his chest with it So
he kisses the cloak touches his chest with
it and he puts it close to him
رضي الله تعالى عنه and he's deeply moved
by the embrace of the Prophet صلى الله
عليه وسلم already of him and the Prophet
صلى الله عليه وسلم does not know him
yet they haven't even spent time with each
other yet and the Prophet
someone of nobility comes to you then show
him honor, show that person honor So this
is the first interaction with him عليه الصلاة
Now the next
narration is in the house of the Prophet
صلى الله عليه وسلم and the narrator is
now Adi is an insider to the Prophet
صلى الله عليه وسلم who we spoke about,
the Christian king who also embraced Islam and
is now with the Prophet
only had one cushion in his room and
remember that was something that shocked Adi بن
حاتم as well that the habit of the
Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم was to take
that cushion and to tell the guest to
sit on it while he sat on the
So he gave
him his cushion صلى الله عليه وسلم and
Jibreel sat on the ground, I'm sorry Jibreel
sat on the ground
I can tell I bear
witness that you are not a man who
is seeking power or corruption on this earth.
Clearly you have good intentions.
The humility of Jibreel
from the very start he didn't walk in
like a king he came in humble to
the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم no mention
of himself and the Prophet
وسلم is praising Jibreel and the Prophet صلى
الله عليه وسلم is elevating the importance of
Jibreel رضي الله تعالى عنه in the majlis
and subhanAllah this is where many of the
hadith, many of the ulema will use the
story of Jibreel by the way is in
the hadith من تواضع whoever lowers themself رفع,
Allah عز و جل will elevate them whoever
lowers themselves لله for Allah, Allah will elevate
them when Jibreel kept on putting himself down
the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم kept on
making him more prominent in the gathering every
time Jibreel enters in the Prophet صلى الله
عليه وسلم is elevating him and he's downplaying
himself but everyone looks at him and is
absolutely captivated by the man
وفود العرب at this point now, this is
the end of the life of the Prophet
صلى الله عليه وسلم, he says the delegations
of the Arabs were coming from all over
to embrace Islam with the Messenger صلى الله
عليه وسلم would send for me to be
present with him when they would be coming,
so he said فألبسوا حلتي I'd wear that
same suit, a hulla is literally a suit
by the way, just not the suit that
you know of, right, but you can imagine
what a hulla actually refers to, right, it's
something formal so he said I would wear
my hulla and he said
So the
Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم it was like
he would boast with my presence, what does
that mean?
He'd bring me close to say that I
have this Sayyid I have this great noble
man that is with me
عنه and the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم
would make him prominent as the Messenger of
Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم was accepting the
wafood, was accepting the delegations of the Arabs
from all over but what are the advices
the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم gave to
him?
You can imagine that a person of that
خَلْق, a person of that creation can lose
his character so he says
الله عليه وسلم said to me إنكم رؤن
You are a man
who Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم has beautified
in creation فحسن خلقك So beautify your character
your real value, your real worth, O Jareer,
is not in that your real worth your
real value is this as if to tell
Jareer that if other people are impressed by
this what impresses Allah
is that if other people see this Allah
عز و جل sees that So Allah صلى
الله عليه وسلم gave you something very unique
in terms of your physical presence, make your
character presence equally impressive and beautiful Allah is
giving you an opportunity And then we see
in the بَيْعَة that the Prophet صلى الله
عليه وسلم took for him So subhanAllah this
is one of the most beautiful elaborations on
the story of Jareer When
the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم would take
بَيْعَة from you when he would take a
pledge from you The Prophet
محمد رسول الله and the idea of defense,
right, that you will fight alongside the Muslims,
that you will protect the borders of Islam,
that you will abide by the community, like
any pledge would have, like any بَيْعَة would
have But then the علماء mention that sometimes
you can find that the Prophet صلى الله
عليه وسلم added a sentence or two and
it always had to do with character, right
So for example,
أسأل الناس شيئا The بَيْعَة with the Prophet
صلى الله عليه وسلم was I will never
ask anyone for anything Be an independent person
When the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم took
the بَيْعَة from the Ansar, the Prophet صلى
الله عليه وسلم gave them you know, a
lot of advice about their morals, about their
ethics and reshaping, right So obviously avoiding الكبائر,
avoiding Zina, avoiding adultery, avoiding السرقة, avoiding robbery
and upholding family ties So whether you ask
the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم for نصيحة,
for advice So if a Sahabi comes to
the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم and says
Oh Sunni, give me advice, the Prophet صلى
الله عليه وسلم gives them very specific words
of advice, or if he took a بَيْعَة
from you صلى الله عليه وسلم sometimes he
adjusted it to the person that was in
front of him جَرِير رضي الله تعالى عنه
when he took his بَيْعَة with the Prophet
The
him on the condition that he would always
have goodwill to the Muslims
This is a problem if you read English
books sometimes that it will be translated as
He took a بَيْعَة from the Prophet صلى
الله عليه وسلم to always give advice to
the Muslims نصيحة is one element of النُّسْح
نُسْح means goodwill Right?
Well-wishing for your brother or your sister
نصيحة is an element of that, it's a
manifestation of that to give someone sincere advice
comes from a place of goodwill that's why
almost nothing online is نصيحة, even if the
YouTube title says نصيحة It's meant to be
a فضيحة, it's meant to humiliate someone, it's
meant to put someone down, it's rarely going
to have a place of goodwill to it
نصيحة is that you give someone sincere advice
from a place of well-wishing, you want
goodness for them so you give them advice,
but the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم took
the بَيْعَة from him على النُّسح لكل مسلم
to have goodwill to every Muslim, and subhanAllah
there are more stories about him in this
regard than any companion that he held on
to that بَيْعَة with the Prophet صلى الله
عليه وسلم and the stories are plentiful one
of them, or the most obvious manifestation was
when جرير, because he was mashaAllah someone extremely
courageous, skilled in battle جرير would never take
the spoil of war beyond what everybody else
took, he said إنما أنا رجل منكم, I'm
just one of you so I take the
same share as everybody else from the spoils,
there's no أمير or lack of أمير here,
no, even though he was the أمير of
the caravans, he was the leader of the
caravans he always takes the same share as
everyone else, that نُسح is also with his
to live an extremely humble life, okay and
so it's narrated from his children and he
had إبراهيم, and he had منذر, and he
had عبيد الله and أيوب so he had
some beautiful names for his children that جرير
would give everything away pretty much, he was
an extremely generous person when something came to
him, because he was the أمير, right, because
he was the leader of his people, that
before we could even smell it, it already
went to the poor and he sort of
sourced it back to
there are people on the outside, they're Muslims
I care about them, I have to show
them that goodwill, but one of the most
famous stories is in the marketplace, that جرير
رضي الله تعالى عنه one time sent a
servant to purchase a horse a very particular
type of horse so the servant purchased the
horse for 400 درهم and he comes back
to جرير and he said I got it
for 400 درهم now 400 درهم is a
steal for that horse, alright but perhaps the
man who sold the horse knows that it's
going to جرير and so he gave it
to him for cheap or something like that,
but it's a steal for the horse, so
what do you do when you usually get
a discount like that, you say الحمد لله
it's the فضل of الله سبحانه وتعالى, right,
and by the way if you get a
discount on some sort of online thing, you
don't have to go back and return the
product and say no you didn't charge me
enough, right this is again, something that جرير
has for himself spiritually جرير says 400, that
doesn't make sense, it's worth more than that,
so جرير says take me back to the
seller, so you go to the seller he
said you sold this for 400 درهم right,
he said yes, he said but it's not
worth 400, it's worth more than 400 so
he said would you be pleased with 500
he said yes he said would you be
pleased with 600 he said of course he
said would you be pleased with 700 he
said yes, he said would you be pleased
with 800, he said yes he said alright,
it's worth 800 so I'm going to give
you 800, so here's another 400 because that's
what the horse is worth and then جرير
starts to walk away and the seller is
absolutely baffled by what just happened like who
does that, who comes back and gives you
twice of what they sold it to you
for and says that's what it's actually worth,
so جرير comes back to him and he
says to him by the way, I'm not
I'm not a مجنون, I'm not crazy this
isn't coming from جنون he said I'm not
doing this because I'm an insane human being,
right and he said I'm doing this because
I gave بَيْعَة to the Prophet ﷺ on
the basis of النُّصْح of goodwill to every
Muslim and your horse is worth more than
that and I didn't want to take advantage
of you سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ النُّصْحِ لِكُلِّ مُسْلِمٍ as
you love for your brother what you love
for yourself in all affairs فَالبَيْعْ وَالشَّرَاطِ when
it comes to buying and selling, when it
comes to family affairs you always love for
your brother what you love for yourself, that's
the peak of goodwill that you think about,
what would I want in that position, and
so جرير there are multiple narrations of him
he's in the marketplace, and if he's selling,
and someone makes him an offer, he says
you know, actually it's more than that, I'm
sorry it's less than that, you're paying me
too much, so جرير would sell less than
what was the asking price, and جرير رضي
الله عنه would add on to what he
would pay for something because جرير always put
himself in the position of the other person,
what a beautiful characteristic, if he was the
buyer, he put himself in the position of
the seller, if he was the seller, he
put himself in the position of the buyer
and this was his way رضي الله عنه,
now with the Prophet
he also has one of the most beautiful
he said the Prophet
never looked at me except that he smiled
in my face he never looked at me
except that he smiled in my face صلى
الله عليه وسلم in another narration قَالَ مَا
Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم never excluded me
or put me behind anything, the Prophet صلى
الله عليه وسلم always welcomed me in and
he included me عليه الصلاة والسلام, why is
this so significant, right because Medina was super
crowded by this point this is no longer
and like look, any community can relate to
that, we talk about it here in our
community you know, those of you who were
here for a long time, like the old
days, right, the smaller masjid, the smaller community,
everyone knew each other's name and it was
so small and then it got big and
so many people came, right, and then now
like it's getting bigger and people don't know
each other's names, right, those basic things start
to get lost as the community grows, Medina
was bustling by the time the Prophet صلى
الله عليه وسلم died because people were literally
coming from all over the world to try
to make their way into Al Medina to
be close to the Prophet
وسلم and the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم
has to honor the Abu Bakr's and Umar's
and Uthman's and Ali's and Bilal's and so
on and so forth of Al Medina, but
still with that, Jarir is saying that the
Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم never failed to
smile at me and the Prophet صلى الله
عليه وسلم never made me feel excluded so
even though I was a new Muslim and
of the newest Muslims, only 40 days before
the death of the Prophet
وسلم he brought me in, عليه الصلاة والسلام
and he included me amongst his people صلى
الله عليه وسلم and هذا, this is from
the khuluq of the Prophet
وسلم, from the character of the Prophet صلى
There's another narration from Sayyidina
الله تعالى عنه says, and this is attributed
to the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم but
it's a broken chain so it's not authentic
to the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم it's
رضي الله تعالى عنه is one of us
the members of Ahlulbayt the family of the
Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم both outwardly and
inwardly, we count him amongst us how beautiful,
subhanAllah only a month or so with the
الله عنه was saying he is already considered
to us like Ahlulbayt Abdullah ibn Umar رضي
الله تعالى عنه he says, he repeats what
his father said about him he said that
my father called him the Yusuf of this
ummah, he was the Yusuf of this ummah
رضي الله تعالى عنه and he said, and
he shared five things with the Prophet صلى
الله عليه وسلم that no one else shared
subhanAllah, what a praise from Abdullah ibn Umar
رضي الله عنه, he said he shared five
things with the Prophet
قال أطيب جسدا ووجها he had the best
physical character, or the best physical creation and
the best face, so he shared that with
وثيابا his perfume and his clothes رضي الله
عنه, so he shared with the Prophet صلى
الله عليه وسلم all of these physical traits,
and even the way he carried himself رضي
الله تعالى عنه, and some of the ulama
say that the Prophet
used to love to wear the clothes of
who of Yemen, the Messenger of Allah صلى
الله عليه وسلم used to prefer the clothing
of the people of Yemen, so his clothes
were like the clothes of the Prophet صلى
الله عليه وسلم his food was like the
food of the Prophet
his looks were like the look of the
Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم, his smell was
like the smell of the Prophet صلى الله
عليه وسلم and Abdullah ibn Aamir bin Aas
رضي الله تعالى عنه, said and on top
of what Ibn Umar said, so he's commenting
on what Ibn Umar said he said, I
confirm everything that he said, and I'll add
a sixth one قال تواضع his humility was
like the humility of the Prophet صلى الله
عليه وسلم الله أكبر, like that's such a
beautiful way to describe a person, he resembles
the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم in all
these things but with only 40 days with
the Messenger of Allah
they said about him
that he was a man of incredible hikmah
and composure and those two things go hand
in hand his composure meant that he was
never rattled by a situation and that's what
made him such a competent leader so in
the battlefield he was always calm collected, as
if nothing was moving around him رضي الله
تعالى عنه not slow and hesitant, calm, collected,
composed and he always had the best opinion
about a route to take in battle, or
go this way, or go that way, and
he could always calm a people down, so
in one situation in one battalion, their Amir
was killed and he said, مات أميركم he
said that your leader just died, فاستغفروا له,
seek forgiveness for him and Allah عز و
جل is going to give you another Amir,
keep at it he could always tell you
what route to take, so he was extremely
the first mission of the Prophet صلى الله
عليه وسلم to him he said to him,
ألا تريحني من ذي الخلصة he said to
جرير, will you not relieve me of ذي
الخلصة, who knows what ذي الخلصة is does
that resemble anything, anyone remember what that is
سبحان الله, it's actually really relevant to the
moment ذي الخلصة was a particular idol in
Yemen that they had and the Prophet صلى
الله عليه وسلم, or it was called كان
يسمى الكعبة اليمانية, the Yemeni Kaaba, Imam Al
-Zahabi رحمه الله says, it was called الكعبة
اليمانية, the Yemeni Kaaba, so it's a whole
like sanctuary, it's a whole setup, the people
would come and do tawaf around it and
they had this whole dedication to ذي الخلصة,
why is it significant, because if you remember
صلى الله عليه وسلم said that the day
of judgment will not come the hour will
not come until the women shake their bodies
around ذي الخلصة, the women of Daws which
was the tribe of Abu Huraira, also a
Yemeni tribe, will shake their bodies around ذي
الخلصة, meaning what, the dancing and the jahiliyya
will come back so when you start to
see idols being around once again, in some
of these places and you think, no way
no way, no way, the Prophet صلى الله
عليه وسلم is saying, it will happen, and
it's interesting the ilmah mentions, subhanallah, the Prophet
around it he didn't mention tawaf around it,
he mentioned people dancing and shaking around it
right, in an indecent way, I'm trying to
be, you know, as obvious but subtle as
possible here, right what does that show you,
this is jahiliyya all over again, so this
is like a concert like environment, type environment,
this isn't just tawaf right, or ibadah, or
the reconstruction of an idol so, Jarir was
the one who the Prophet
وسلم said, look, it's time for this thing
to go, Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم let
some of these things wait a bit sometimes
in a region because of sensitivities, but now
enough of Yemen had embraced Islam enough of
the tribes of Yemen had embraced Islam, he
said can you go and can you do
away with it, and Jarir
عنه he says, so you know, I got
together 150 of my men in Medina and
we decided to do it now subhanallah, in
this entire situation Jarir
says, I had a problem what it was
is because he was so tall he was
on the horse right, so you know, I
can relate, I'm a little I try to
pretend like I'm not bad on a horse,
I love riding horses I love riding camels,
it's an incredible you know, experience, and it's
obviously a good thing for us to learn
how to do it but I'm not going
to lie, I'm a little clumsy when I
get on there sometimes, like how do I
fix this right, how do I get myself
set here, right, and if Jarir رضي الله
تعالى عنه is that tall, it's a problem
on top of that, his feet are so
big, that they don't fit in the in
the saddle, like it's not working for him,
so the whole the whole awkwardness of how
he would ride a horse, and Jarir says
I used to fall off sometimes, like I
had a hard time with my horse, so
he's got the mind, he knows what he
wants to do, but he has a problem,
and he's going on an important mission so
he comes to the Prophet
وسلم and he tells the Prophet صلى الله
عليه وسلم, look this is what it is,
and before that, SubhanAllah it's even said that,
because he wasn't good on a horse, all
of his battles on foot he was like,
I'm not even going to bother doing the
horse so he said that the Prophet صلى
put his hand on my chest and he
Oh Allah, ثبته على الخير give him firmness
on the horse and make him هادياً مهدياً,
guided and guiding and that's from the khuluq
of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم, that
he'd always add the dua he'd do ziyad
of what was asked he'd do extra of
what was asked so when Umm Sulaym says
about Anas make dua for him in this
way, the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم adds
two more he does this for everybody صلى
الله عليه وسلم when you ask him for
a dua, he makes dua for what you
asked for and more, عليه الصلاة والسلام and
it's in the realm of hidayah and acceptance,
guidance and acceptance and all these types of
things so SubhanAllah, he says that after the
Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم made that dua,
he said when I would ride a horse,
it was as if me, the horse and
the wind were all one entity like it
was so smooth, that when I was on
a horse, the horse's legs became like my
feet SubhanAllah, and he said the wind as
well, the reeh as well, because sometimes if
it gets stormy or windy, that affects it,
right so he says like, the entire dynamics
of my horse riding, changed after that one
dua from the Prophet
I would ride a horse and I would
flow with the horse, with absolutely no issues,
and he said the Prophet
وسلم made dua for all of the men
that went out on that mission, to destroy
the khalasa, he said he made dua for
us five times صلى الله عليه وسلم and
then specifically for me when I told him
that I was clumsy on a horse he
made that dua for Allah عز و جل
to give me thabat, and then Allah مجعله
هادياً مهدياً make him guided and guiding so,
that's one mission, he was the one that
actually destroyed this idol, may Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَ
تَعَالَى protect us from its return, Allahم أَمِن
the second mission, because remember it's a very
short time, the second mission, was a mission
of da'wah and this one he actually
went into Yemen, to carry out this mission
from the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم, speaking
to a man named Al-Qulay'ah a
chief named Al-Qulay'ah who was a
wealthy chief from Yemen and the Prophet صلى
الله عليه وسلم wanted Jareer who has this
position and has this posture to go and
call these people to Islam so Jareer went
to Al-Qulay'ah and Al-Qulay'ah
accepted Islam رضي الله تعالى عنه and on
top of that he freed 4,000 slaves
as his embrace of Islam, subhanAllah what a
beautiful entry into Islam right, to have that
type of an act of charity and emancipation
I embrace Islam and I'm freeing all 4
,000 of these slaves, also shows you how
much wealth the man had for him to
be able to do that shows you the
power and the position that he had, so
Jareer رضي الله تعالى عنه said he actually
came back with me to the Prophet صلى
الله عليه وسلم now by the way side
note here, Yemen because I don't know if
you all know this but Saudi Arabia, Yemen,
you know some of these things are relatively
new, right Yemen is not what it used
to be, so when we say Yemen, this
is one of the closer towns to the
Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم, right, what's considered
Yemeni at that time is closer to the
Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم right, in Jazirat
Al-Arab in the Arabian Peninsula and in
that entire geography but he's coming with the
chief, and you can imagine the joy that
I brought him to you Ya Rasulullah what
do you think happens when he gets back
to Medina, he finds out that the Prophet
him right, and SubhanAllah this is really deeply
profound the whole story of Uwais Al-Qarni
رضي الله تعالى عنه the beautiful man from
Yemen who stayed behind from the delegation of
his tribe because he had to take care
of his mom, so he missed being a
Sahabi, and the Prophet
said that this man when he comes, you're
going to meet a man, he's telling the
Sahabi later on, make du'a or ask
him to make du'a for you, ask
him to seek forgiveness for you, because he's
a blessed man so there's some people SubhanAllah
that were coming from Yemen to the Prophet
صلى الله عليه وسلم after he sent Muadh
رضي الله عنه to them and they're embracing
Islam and coming and they just missed the
Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم in the case
of Jazirat imagine, I mean, that 40 days
felt like a lifetime, right, or that time
that he had with the Prophet صلى الله
40 or up to 90 days
as some of the ulama mentioned, the point
is that short time he had with the
Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم, even if it's
a week with him, felt like a lifetime
like I was immediately someone dear to the
heart of me and to his home, he
treated me like family right away, he praised
my character, he gave me specific nasiha, and
now he has passed away
وسلم, so Jazirat was crushed at the death
of the Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم as
he was coming with the excitement of a
chief that had embraced Islam but that would
actually end up only being a tabi' because
he missed the life of the Prophet صلى
الله عليه وسلم so he manages still to
narrate a hundred hadiths, a hundred narrations from
I'm going
to mention this one because it's really interesting,
but Jarir is one of the core reasons
for the masih controversy, the wiping over the
socks Ibrahim al-Nakha'i, he narrates from
and he saw Jarir relieve himself ثم توضع
and then make wudu' ومسح على خفيه رضي
الله تعالى عنه, and then he wiped on
his socks, and he said
I saw the Prophet
صلى الله عليه وسلم doing this Now what
type of socks?
That's where the fiqh is different, and it's
valid اختلاف, it is valid اختلاف, alright, how
thick does it have to be, I'm not
starting that fight right now, it's valid اختلاف
it truly is valid اختلاف, and may Allah
reward all of our ulama and guide us
towards always a sawab in this and all
things in regards to our deen, Allahumma ameen
But just from a perspective of why this
is so important, is that Ibrahim says, فكان
This used to make the sahaba happier, this
made the Muslims happy because Jarir was one
of the last people to become Muslim What
does that mean?
Can anybody tell me in fiqhi terms?
Why is that important?
I see some Qalam students here, come on,
make your show your seminary man Show them
what's up, what is it?
More accurate More accurate?
Why would it be more accurate?
What is it?
It wasn't abrogated You still
count man, your sons in Qalam, it counts
You still get to represent It wasn't abrogated,
it wasn't منصوح, because obviously some of these
rulings were evolving in the lifetime of the
Prophet ﷺ, so the fact that Jarir became
Muslim at the end and he did this
at the end means that this is one
of the last actions of the Prophet ﷺ
means that this is the deen, and so
the only real ikhtilaf is how thick the
khuf is and how long you can do
mas'ah over and things of that sort
It also explains a little bit about why
a controversy would even exist there, because clearly
this was a later practice of the Prophet
ﷺ So it makes sense from a fiqh
perspective why this would come up later on
Okay, so the Prophet ﷺ passes away in
the time of Abu Bakr as-Siddiq رضي
الله تعالى عنه another incident happens One of
the conversations that Jarir had with the Prophet
ﷺ before he passed away, he said, يا
رسول الله البجلة that my people are very
divided, that there's a lot of fracturing that's
happened amongst the sub-tribes and he wanted
the Prophet ﷺ يوحيدهم to bring them back
together, and he thought Islam was an opportunity
to bring them back together, and the Prophet
ﷺ had intended to help him with that
So his intention was, get back from Yemen
bring all of them now, and let's sit
around the Prophet ﷺ, let's get rid of
all these disagreements now that we're Muslim, and
let's hold on to حبل الله let's hold
on to the rope of Allah فمات النبي
ﷺ The Prophet ﷺ died So he said,
I went to Abu Bakr
عنه and I said, I made this request
of the Prophet ﷺ to bring my people
and to unite them on Islam but now
the Prophet ﷺ has passed away will you
help me?
And he said that Abu Bakr
تعالى عنه turned to me and Abu Bakr
رضي الله تعالى عنه said haven't you heard
about what your people did?
And he said, what?
Your people apostated because they're not paying zakah
those who didn't pay the zakah to be
from the مرتدين, right?
Those who denied the obligation of zakah to
be from the apostates So forget about uniting
them right now right now we have to
fight them right?
And this is obviously tragic for Jareer.
Jareer still hopes that after they bring them
back they can unite them but now, Subhanallah,
he joins Abu Bakr
sends him to join حروب الردة the battle
against the apostates and to fight the people
and bring them back to لا إله إلا
الله So he joins actually now the army
of Khalid رضي الله تعالى عنه as it
ends up turning out, Subhanallah, that his people
were not of the main factions of the
حروب الردة, so they made tawbah once again,
they repented once again, and they embraced Islam
once again.
So what does Jareer want to do now?
He says, alright, they made tawbah let me
bring them back to Medina so that we
can fulfill what we said we would fulfill.
Let's come back to Medina now, and Abu
Bakr رضي الله عنه can unite these tribes
and he said, so I got back to
Medina and I heard the news,
Abu Bakr passed
away too.
So now عمر رضي الله تعالى عنه was
the Khalifa So he goes to عمر رضي
الله عنه and he said, look, the Prophet
ﷺ told me he would sit my people
down Abu Bakr said he would sit with
my people and he would bring them, he'd
help me bring them together bring all these
tribes together.
He said now I'm asking the same from
you and my people are eager to, you
know, join right now the ranks of the
Muslims the armies of the Muslims and to
participate basically, to become full participants of the
community.
They weren't Muslim for too long Musaylimah took
advantage of them in their newness in their
Islam now they're Muslim once again so can
we do this?
And عمر رضي الله تعالى عنه he basically
says to جرير he says, listen, Abu Bakr
رضي الله تعالى عنه forbade those that apostated
and then came back to Islam from serving
in the army remember
عنه couldn't serve, right that was for the
safety of the community, like fine, your tawbah
will be accepted but we can't trust you
yet to fight on the side of the
Muslims that's putting the community at risk.
He said I can't do that part, but
let's see what we can do.
So جرير comes into, he goes back and
he convinces his people and he comes back
into Medina with 2,000 men and they're
holding their weapons and
عنه is like whoa, whoa, whoa hold on,
what are you doing here?
Like where did these men come from?
How did you get 2,000 of them
to suddenly come and show up in Medina
all armed up and with their weapons?
So جرير said that I took 100 of
my men and I assigned them, I said
each one of you are responsible for coming
as 20 let's go and let's do islah
between the people, let's go reconcile سبحان الله
look at his brain, his mind as an
ameer, as a leader.
Says let's go get, each one of you
needs to go and get your group of
people, the people that you know that you
can convince you get 20, so 10 times
20 it is 2,000 right?
Alright Okay No, 100 times 20 sorry, it's
200 It's late night I'm sorry 2,000
He gets 2,000 men Okay, I have
an accounting degree by the way, I'm just
going to put that out there 2,000
men الحمد لله I stuck to sharia Alright
2,000 men come back to Umar
عنه says look, I can't put them in
the army just yet because that's Abu Bakr
had not yet overturned that rule, he did
with at some point, he did, especially as
the Persians were extremely aggressive and they're fighting
two fronts with the Persians and the Romans
So, he basically used them in different ways
brought them together, used them in different ways,
and this is where Ibn Asakir رحمه الله
and others, al-Khatib mentioned that Umar رضي
الله عنه established the first concept of post
offices SubhanAllah, how?
Because at that point, the communication in the
ummah needs to be a lot more fluid
and rapid, so they established post offices where
they had trustworthy messengers, and it's easy to
delegitimize, to send mixed communication, to send an
army in the wrong way, because people were
becoming Muslim and then fighting on behalf of
Islam or against Islam so fast that it's
hard to tell who your men are sometimes,
there's a lot that's happening, so this was
Umar رضي الله عنه's attempt, where he established
post offices, right where the mail will be
sent, or a letter will be sent, and
then there are trustworthy messengers that are responsible
for going back and forth between the different
battalions of the ummah then finally, the Persians
became very aggressive and they needed, the Muslims
needed reinforcements in a very particular area, so
Jarir was able to take his people from
al-Madinah to al-Iraq, and SubhanAllah, he
took them in less than two weeks and
they said that, that was from the barakah
of the dua of the Prophet صلى الله
عليه وسلم for his his horse and his
ability to move, right, and then that barakah
took the whole army that they cut that
distance in half the time that it would
take another group of people because of the
speed and the finesse of Jarir رضي الله
تعالى عنه on his horse and from the
barakah with their tribes as well, now he
and Umar رضي الله تعالى عنه have a
beautiful relationship there's so much wisdom that we
could glean, I know that SubhanAllah, Salatul Isha
is near, so I'll try to summarize but
there's so much wisdom one of them, of
his narrations with Umar
is that he, one day took off his
upper garment so he could make wudu' which
is very common, his rida' and Umar رضي
الله عنه poked him and said خذ رداك,
put your shirt back on it's very common
for the men when they were doing wudu'
right to do so why was that, he
was like what was that all about Umar
رضي الله تعالى عنه did not want that
to be a fitna' for the women so
social media, gym selfies don't say mashallah awrah
right, you know think about this, there is
a concept of haya' in our religion, so
some of the scholars say it's not always
about halal and haram and awrah here, like
you know what you're doing, okay, so even
if you're covering your awrah, it could be
a fitna' for people, this isn't the way
of our deen, we have haya' in our
religion, right, we have modesty in our religion,
and so that's one lesson from it, the
other one is that Umar
عنه said, ان هذا مثل يوسف that this
man is like Yusuf, meaning what حسد عين,
envy will come towards him like it came
to Yusuf عليه السلام فليغطي نفسه let him
cover himself instead, so that's one narration, the
other one so don't be a fitna' for
the people, you can pause your gym selfies
and think about the modesty that you have
online, the other one though, subhanallah, it's such
a beautiful narration Umar
was with Jarir رضي الله تعالى عنه one
time in a gathering فتنفس رجل in Arabic
it means that a man passed, broke winds
right, passed gas basically loudly in the middle
of a gathering obviously out of nowhere and
it wasn't intended but someone broke their wudu'
so Umar رضي الله تعالى عنه looked at
I'm saying to the one who did
this قُمْ فَتَوَضَّ get up and make wudu'
clearly somebody lost their wudu' somebody get up
and make their wudu' and whoever did it
didn't want to get up and make wudu'
it's embarrassing, the whole gathering is there and
the one guy that clearly passed gas is
going to have to get up and make
wudu' in front of everyone so Umar رضي
الله تعالى عنه said it three times and
he was upset that no one was getting
up and then Jareed
Ya ameer al-mu'mineen,
go ahead and tell us all to make
wudu' so Umar رضي الله تعالى عنه said
you know what for myself and for all
ثُمَّ صَلَّيْنَا he said that it's for all
of us, get up let's all get up,
let's all make wudu' and let's all pray
so it's one of the ways of protecting
the dignity of a Muslim, right Umar رضي
الله عنه said something very beautiful to Jareed
فِي الْإِسْلَامِ you were a great leader in
the days of ignorance and you're a great
leader in Islam like Allah has given you
a way of thinking about things and a
way of going about leading that's very beautiful
and one narration what a good leader you
are so Umar رضي الله عنه praised his
wisdom and his way of thinking to just
spare that one man of embarrassment subhanAllah, that
incident in and of itself think about it,
someone makes a mistake or someone's in a
situation, the man didn't even do anything haram
right, is there a way to cover this
is a nush' to every Muslim this is
to him also Jareed is thinking about that
man this is my nush', this is my
goodwill to him to not put him in
an awkward situation let's all go and let's
all make wudu' instead and of course this
person subhanAllah who رضي الله عنه who had
this much goodwill towards the Muslims you can
imagine how much fitna broke his heart when
the Muslims started to fight each other right,
and Jareed is a man who, remember Ali
رضي الله عنه said he's like family he's
like ahlul bayt but Jareed wanted no part
رضي الله عنه in fighting between Muslims or
the factions that were arising and Jareed رضي
الله عنه withdrew himself altogether he wanted to
be nowhere around fitna at all this is
part of his nush' لكل مسلم to the
point by the way and this is narrated
from Adi ibn Hatim along with him that
we're not going to sit even in a
city where Uthman is being insulted رضي الله
عنه if the people start to insult Uthman
رضي الله عنه, we don't even want to
be in the same city and so they
withdrew themselves from Medina, they went to Al
-Iraq in Kufa Ali رضي الله عنه asked
Jareed to participate and Jareed
said to him listen, the Prophet صلى الله
عليه وسلم told me to go to the
people and to fight until they say لا
إله إلا الله he said and they said
I'm not going to
fight the people that say
I'm not going to go against anyone
that's embraced Islam my job was to call
the people to Islam not to fight them
out of it so no, I'm not going
to participate in any friction or fitna between
the Muslims and because of that, he went
to a place called Qirqisiyah Qirqisiyah which is
an island in the middle of nowhere so
that he could stay away from the fitna
so he could worship Allah سبحانه وتعالى and
he could stay away from the fitna and
of course this is a manhal this is
a methodology of some of the companions they
dealt with this in different ways and this
was his way of dealing with it, he
said I didn't become Muslim for this I
didn't become Muslim to fight other Muslims and
of course one of the signs of the
hour and what the Prophet ﷺ mentioned to
us, that as the day of judgment would
come for us at some point, if it
comes to a place where fitna becomes too
wild that if you have to take to
the hills and raise sheep in the valley,
then do that right, that's better for you
than to put yourself in that situation he
lived a long time
despite that his children became narrators of his,
so he had Ibrahim and Ayub, his two
children Ibrahim and Ayub and he also had
Al-Munzir and Ubaidullah, four sons who narrated
from him and became a part of his
legacy in that regard
and when he passed away he was brought
back to the city and the sahaba cried
extensively over him because they remembered all the
praise of the Prophet ﷺ for this man,
even though he was a sahabi for just
a little over a month, 40 days but
his beauty his character
distinguished him at a very early period in
his own life in Islam so he died
actually in the year 51 after hijrah رضي
الله تعالى عنه we ask Allah to be
pleased with him we ask Allah سبحانه وتعالى
to be pleased with all the companions of
the Prophet ﷺ we ask Allah to send
his peace and blessings upon our master Muhammad
صلى الله عليه وسلم and to gather us
with him and the companions
