I want you to imagine meeting Allah
on the Day of Judgement and Allah
making you aware
of a tragedy
that was going to happen to you but
was averted by one of your du'as. You
would have never even known that this was
potentially going to be a part of your
story. You see a lot of times we
trust Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala
to relieve us of a hardship that we
already know is present in our lives. But
of the beauty of that relationship with Allah
Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala is that you realize
that your duas that are preventative
against hardship are working in your favor every
day, and you don't need to see the
immediate effect of your dua to repel that
hardship to know that it is happening on
a regular basis.
So we've already established that there are duas
that change circumstances,
and there are duas that change the way
that we deal with circumstances.
When it comes to hardship, I actually want
us to talk about duas that remove hardship
in a tangible sense, and then we can
talk about duas that help us cope with
hardship
and change our perspective towards them. And when
it comes to these duas related to hardship,
there are duas we learned from the Prophet
sallallahu alaihi wa sallam that are preventative in
their nature and there are duas that come
after the fact. And subhanAllah of the blessing
of athkarasabahu
almasa, the morning remembrances and the evening remembrances,
is that they actually include all of these
duas that are preventative in their nature in
relation to pain in this life
and punishment in the hereafter.
So there are 2 duas that have a
story behind them that are deeply profound
and that should be repeated every single morning
and every single evening.
The first one is the du'a that Uthman
radiAllahu ta'ala Anhu narrates from the Prophet SallAllahu
Alaihi Wasallam that the Prophet SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam
said that a person will not be harmed
by anything
in the heavens or in the earth
if they say every morning and every evening,
That in the name of Allah
with whose name nothing is harmed on earth
nor in the heavens and He is the
all hearing and the all knowing. So SubhanAllah
when you say Bismillah,
you are beginning every affair with the name
of Allah
With whose name there is no harm that
can coexist.
Where Allah is, no harm can be. Wahuasami'uulAAalim
You can't hear
or see or know all of what is
happening around you and things that are coming
your way. Just imagine SubhanAllah
the signal or something that's happening or something
that's about to strike you from behind you.
You can't see it or hear it or
perceive it. Allah sees,
hears and perceives everything. And so this du'a
is beautiful, it's comprehensive and the prophet sallallahu
alaihi wa sallam is saying that if a
person says this it will protect them
from all harm in the earth and from
the heavens. And there are numerous stories that
we have from the Salaf being protected from
major things that happened to them because they
made this du'a. In fact, SubhanAllah even the
narrator himself, Uthman radiAllahu ta'ala Anhu
his son who narrated it from him, Aban
radiAllahu ta'ala Anhu wa'an Abihi. He narrated this
hadith from his father and Aban used to
make sure to always say this du'a every
morning and every evening. And then one day
he was actually struck by an infection and
he was partially paralyzed as a result of
that infection.
So those that narrated the du'a from him,
they were curious how it was that he
was struck by this sickness, by this illness
even though he was the one that taught
this dua and he taught this hadith and
he said radiAllahu ta'ala Anhu
that wallahi I did not lie upon Uthman
radiAllahu ta'ala Anhu nor did Uthman radiAllahu ta'ala
Anhu tell a lie about the Prophet Sallallahu
Alaihi Wasallam.
I say this du'a every single day and
every single night and Allah has protected me.
It happened to be that on that day,
I was overcome by anger and I forgot
to recite the du'a. And that's when this
happened to me, SubhanAllah.
And by the way, I know someone very
close to me, SubhanAllah,
who would recite this dua every single day,
every single evening, and the one day that
they didn't recite this du'a was the one
day that they had a car accident, and
they will say it themselves.
Now someone might be saying, well, wait a
minute, like, does that mean we can't be
harmed? What about righteous people that make the
du'a
and that have a car accident or that
have an illness that comes to them? This
is where the beauty of this comes into
play. And Imam Ashokani rahimawllah he says that
this du'a
or this hadith rather is evidence that these
words repel every single harm, no matter what
it is, from the one who says them.
He will not be afflicted by anything in
the night or the day if he says
them during the night and the day.
However,
if a person gets hurt regardless
that is by the will of Allah Subhanahu
wa Ta'ala
and you would certainly know that it was
khayr, you would certainly know that it was
good. If you're saying this dua
then you are asking Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala
to protect you and you have a sure
method of protection and Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala
still allows you to be tested and tried
with some sort of catastrophe or some sort
of hardship, then know that Allah Subhanahu wa
ta'ala
intends for you good through that hardship so
long as you respond with good just as
you began with good, turning back to Allah
Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala. So the du'a is protection
for you
from the bad effect
of a trial or a tragedy and the
tangible effect of trial and tragedy. But of
course Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala still will choose
to test some of us with some of
these trials and tragedies and that would be
khair for us, that would be good for
us so long as we respond in a
way that is pleasing to Him. So this
is the dua, Bismillahilladi
laa yaghuruma asmihee shayunfilardu walafasama
wahuasamiur
a'lim You say it 3 times in the
morning and 3 times in the evening. Also,
Abdurrahmanun Abi Bakr radiAllahu ta'ala Anhu Ma he
narrates from his father or he narrates that
he said to his father that, Oh my
father, I heard you making this du'a every
single morning and every single evening, three times.
You would say, Allahummaaafinifi
badani,
Allahmaaafinifi
summary, Allahmaaafinifi
basari,
la illaha illaant,
Allahuminni
a'uzhu bikaminal kufri walfaqr
So he would say 3 times in the
morning and 3 times in the evening, oh
Allah grant me health in my body, grant
me health in my hearing, grant me health
in my sight, la ilaha illa ant, there
is no God but You. And then he
would say, oh Allah, I seek refuge with
You from disbelief and poverty. And oh Allah,
I seek refuge with you from the punishment
of the grave. There is no God but
you. So he said, I asked my father,
I see you saying this every single day
and night, three times.
And he responded and he said, I heard
the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam doing the same,
wa anauhhibbu
an astannabisunnatihi
and I love to practice the sunnah of
the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wasallam. So these are
2 duas that are already in your morning
and evening remembrance and they are preventative
of actual hardship coming your way and actual
tests and trials
coming your way. Now as for after the
hardship,
there is no du'a greater than the following
du'a, and there's a story behind it as
well. Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas
he says that one day during the khilaf
of Amrul Khattab
I walked past Uthman ibn Affan radiAllahu Anhu
in the masjid and I gave him salaam
and he completely ignored me. So just think
about Madina, Sa'ad bin Abi Waqas
walking past Uthmar ibn Affan saying, assalamu alaykum,
and Uthman completely ignored him. So he was
upset. So he went to Umar ibn Khattab
and he told him what happened
and when Uthman
comes to him and he's asked about that
then he says you didn't say salam to
me, what are you talking about? Sa'id says
wallahi I said salam to you, he takes
an oath that I said salam to you,
and Uthman takes an oath that Sa'id did
not say salam to him. I don't remember
this conversation at all.
And then after recalling what had happened,
then Usman radiAllahu ta'ala Anhu sought Allah's forgiveness
and he sought the forgiveness of Sa'd and
he said that I was preoccupied
with this particular du'a that I was trying
to remember from the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam
and Sa'ad radiAllahu ta'ala Anhu said, I will
tell you what it was that was preoccupying
you and what dua you were thinking about.
It is the du'a of Yunus alayhis salaam,
la ilaha illaanta subhanaka
inni kuntumina ladalameen.
There is no God but You, glorified
are
You, surely I was from the wrongdoers.
And the Prophet SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam said about
this
That no one makes du'a to Allah Subhanahu
Wa Ta'ala with this dua except that Allah
Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala will answer them and that's
why we find in the story of Yunus
alaihis salaam that after he made this dua
Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala says, wakathari
kanunjil mumineen
And just like that, we rescue the believers
as well. We grant relief to the believers
as well. So this was not just the
relief for Yunus alayhis salaam,
but the relief that comes to the believers
as well. And who is in a more
desperate situation than Yunus, alayhi salaam, swallowed in
the belly of that whale, in the bottom
of the ocean, in the depth of the
night, calling out to Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala
with this du'a. So the Prophet SallAllahu Alaihi
Wasallam is saying there is no Muslim that
calls upon Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala with this
du'a
accept that Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala will answer
them. And in that, by the way, is
an indication
that it's not just the removal of hardship.
It's also that when a person
acknowledges their vulnerability to Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala,
and that vulnerability is especially felt in a
moment of hardship, Allah Subhanahu Wa
Ta'ala will not just remove the hardship and
Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala will not just remove
that which causes you distress.
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala will give you things
that you didn't even know you were supposed
to be asking him for.
