Am I bad? My dear brothers and sisters as salaam alaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuhu.
I want to start off tonight's discussion by posing a question to all of you. And it's a very simple question. And you can raise your hand as to which one you feel is the correct answer. I'm going to pose two options to you. How many of you feel that money is a good thing? Raise your hand. If your money is a good thing? Raise your hands. Okay, fantastic. Put your hands down. How many of you feel that money is a bad thing? Raise your hands. Money is a bad thing. Raise your hands. No, okay, fine. How many of you understood my question?
Because not everyone raised their hands. It seems that people didn't know what I was saying. Now, the reason why I pose this question my dear brothers and sisters, as a Muslim community, I believe we have very polarized opinions as to when when it comes to money, and I believe it has to do a little bit with our emotional relationship and a lot of it to do with what Allah subhana wa tada says about money in the Quran. So in one verse, Allah subhanho wa Taala. He tells us that wealth and children are from the adornments of this life. And another verse, Allah subhanho wa Taala tells us that the greatest things we will be trading is our wealth and children and thus they are called a
fitna. So where does Islam actually stand on money? So now to answer this question for you, I want to take you back to the second generation of Islam. There was a pious and righteous man by the name of silent bin Abdullah Nana, the grandson of Omar Abdullah Cotabato, the Allahu anhu. And the Khalifa at that time, he was on his way to Makkah, he tells his entourage when we get to Makkah you're going to meet an individual the likes of whom you've never seen before. So he said yeah, Khalifa what is it that makes him so unique? And the Khalifa responded, just wait and see. So they arrived a mark and he started performing tawaf and lo and behold, Salim is performing throw off as
well. So the halifa he comes up to Salim he says, Yes, Allah Salam aleikum. May I ask you a question and the silent he says, of course, he says, Do you have any need of yours in this dunya that I can fulfill for you? Do you have a debt that I can pay off for you? sudden he lowers his head? And he ponders and then he raises his head? And he says, Yes, califa? May I ask you a question before I answer your question. And the Khalifa says Of course. He says imagine both you and I are guests in someone's house, and you have a need of yours that needs to be fulfilled. Would you ask a fellow guest or would you ask the host the halifa without thinking he says obviously I would ask the host
suicide and he responds by saying yes Elisa, here we are in the house of Allah subhanho wa Taala if I have a need of mine that needs to be fulfilled, does it make any sense that I asked a follow guest and not ask the host and then sell them walked away? his entourage got really really upset he said yes Khalifa let us imprison him, let us beat him. Let us make an example of him. And the Khalifa said let him be We will wait for him outside the machines. So they finish their camera and they go outside and they're waiting for Salim to come outside the masjid. So silence leaving the masjid now and the Khalifa comes up to him and he says your Salah Salaam Alaikum now that we have left the
masjid Do you have any need of yours of this dunya that needs to be fulfilled or perhaps a debt that I can pay off for you. Again Salim lowers his head and he raises it and he says yeah Khalifa before I answer your question, may I ask you a question? And the Khalifa says Of course. So Salim says, this wealth that you possess, do you actually own this wealth? Or has Allah subhana wa tada merely appointed you over it? So now the Khalifa learned his lesson the first time he pretends to do what Salim did, he lowers his head, and he's hoping that some sort of divine inspiration is going to come to him. Like it came to Salem. But nothing came to the Khalifa his head. So he raises his head and
he says what naturally came to him and he says, I've merely been appointed over this wealth society and he responds by saying Yeah, Khalifa This is truly the case. And you don't own that wealth. Then does it make sense that I asked the one that is appointed over it, or the one that owns all of the wealth and the treasures of this world?
And the skies and he walked away.
The entourage of the Khalifa returned to the Khalifa in astonishment that How did he let him walk away with such an answer? And the Khalifa just simply said, Did I not tell you that he was a unique individual? My dear brothers and sisters, I believe this story perfectly exemplifies the relationship we are meant to have with money. A lot of us think that we own the money that we possess, a lot of us think that we have this money due to our own hard work. But what we fail to realize is that Allah subhanho wa Taala time and time in the Quran, he tells us that it is Allah subhanho wa Taala that owns the treasures of the heavens and the earth and he gives to whomever he
pleases. So regardless of what work we do, Allah subhana wa tada has destined our risk for us. Now obviously part of attaining that risk is doing that work. Now we are here tonight, my dear brothers and sisters for a very good and noble cause. And that is we're helping Islam sustain itself in the city of Aberdeen, creating a community for all of you that live in this wonderful city. What I want to enlighten you with tonight, my dear brothers and sisters, is help us is helping us fix our relationship with money. So now when you look at money, my dear brothers and sisters, money is not good and bad within of itself. But rather I like to give an example that is like a magnifying glass
and it magnifies what is truly in our hearts. Those of us whom Allah subhanho wa Taala has blessed with pure hearts are going to spend it in pure causes, and it will magnify that purity but those whom Allah subhanho wa Taala allowed to have corrupted hearts And may Allah subhanaw taala pure all of our our hearts, they will spend in corrupt causes and will not spend in the way of Allah subhanho wa Taala and thus it will further magnify the corruption that lies there in so tonight I want you to think about this concept of wealth as a purifying of your heart. Now is this substantiating the Quran? Yes, it is. Allah subhana wa tada and surah to tilba he gives us an example of a people and
it could be any one of us whom said, Oh Allah, if you're to give us money, we will surely spend in your sake. And I'm sure internally we've had that conversation with ourselves sometimes when we're at fundraising dinners like this, that oh life you give me money, I was spending your sake. So unless I know what Allah gave these people money, but what happened to them, they became stingy. They became greedy, and they didn't spend in the way of Allah subhanho wa Taala. So what did Allah subhanaw taala respond to these people? For acaba omniva. kung fu beat him that as a consequence, Allah subhana wa tada allowed hypocrisy to grow in their hearts. So now we learned from this story,
that when we give in charity, it actually purifies our heart. But if your eyes are hard to have more than just hypocrisy, could mean and wily him sacaton toto hero who matsuzaki him Bihar that take from the wealth of charity that will purify their charity, and will purify them, will purify them, not only of hypocrisy, but also of stinginess, because the characteristic of the believer is one of giving charity and one of generosity. That is why the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam says, A sadaqa to borhan. That charity is a proof of your Eman. How many people have heard this Hadeeth before charity is a proof of your demand? Raise your hands if you've heard this hadith before. It's
a very well known Hadith established in Sahih, Muslim and other sources as well. But I want us to understand truly tonight, what does it mean that charity is a proof? Why did the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam say that charity is a proof of our Eman because it requires a high level of man to give something that you love so dearly in the way of Allah subhanho wa Taala and have conviction that whatever you spend in the way of Allah, Allah is going to give you much much more in this life and in the next. And that is why it is a proof of your Eman because if you're able to let go of something that you love so dearly, a man has been established in your heart. And if you're not able
to let it go, then it shows us that we have work to do to increase our own certainty in the promise of Allah subhanho wa Taala
My dear brothers and sisters, as I was coming in on the plane today, the air conditioner wasn't working. And as the air conditioner wasn't working, the whole plane was just sweating profusely spinal, it was extremely hot. And in those instances in this situations I can't help but think of how the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam describes your model cuyama when he says the sun will be at its closest proximity to Earth that it has ever been. And people will be drowning in their sweat on that day.
Some to their ankles, some to their knees, some to their waist, and some even higher than that, to the degree that they're almost drowning. Now every individual on that today will be looking for shade. And one of the beautiful things that will shade us on that day, my dear brothers and sisters, is the charity that we give. So tonight when you give think about that relationship that you have with Allah subhanho wa Taala. And then when you show up on the Day of Judgment, which category in which group of people do you want to be from? Do you want to be of those that are shaded under the shade of Allah subhanho wa Taala? Or do you want to be though of those that are sweating profusely,
to the degree that they may be almost drowning, Allah subhanaw taala protect all of us. I mean,
now my dear brothers and sisters, when it comes to this money that we possess, we're all going to have a regret one day, whether we were a good believer or a weak believer, on the day of judgment, we're going to have a regret. And that is going to be that only if we had done more good deeds, and I want you to think about right now, if you knew you're going to pass away within the next couple of hours, and unless and without a long in all of our lives with a man. I mean, how would you want to spend your next few hours if you knew you were about to die? What is that good deed you would do? Allah subhanho wa Taala he actually answers this question for us at the end of suderman African and
I found this very, very interesting on wireless. I know it's Allah concluded with this ayah because we were just talking about how those that giving charity, Allah subhanaw taala protects them from hypocrisy and unless I know what Allah concludes with this verse, where Allah subhanho wa Taala he says, What unfill Kumi Maharaja canal communicably Satya Docomo for your coonara biloela cartoning illa Jalen corrib for a sadhaka akumina Sala hint that on that day, people will plead and will try to bargain and negotiate with Allah subhanho wa Taala that, Oh Allah, please, please, please let me come back to this world and do one good deed that will save me. And in this verse, Allah subhanho wa
Taala specified what that good deed is for our son, our communists Salin so that I can give charity and spend in the way of Allah subhanho wa Taala. So that I can be from the righteous people. So it's as if unless I know what Allah is telling us that if you want to save your soul in the Hereafter, and you don't want to live a life of regret, than in this life, while you have that money while you actually own it, and possess it, then spend it in the way of Allah subhanho wa Taala.
There was a pie scholar of the past. His name was a man, a been a behind him or Rosie Abdul Rahman, ebina, behati murase. A community came to him. And they said, Yeah, man, we would like for you to build a Masjid for us. So, man, one day, he addresses his community. And he says, oh, people, there's a community here from the outskirts, they don't have a mustard. And the winter time, it rains so much, and they're forced to pray in the rain, and they have nothing to cover their heads with. And in the summertime, it gets so hot that their skin gets burnt and have nothing to cover their heads with. So is there someone amongst you who will spend in the way of Allah subhanho wa
Taala to build a machine. And it's going to be a similar feeling tonight, when you are asked to give, but no one wanted to give that nice panel you can imagine as if there's an economic downturn in their community at that time, and no one wanted to give to one man from the goodness of his heart. He says, Yeah, man, I will give in the way of Allah subhanho wa Taala. But on one condition, and that condition is that you promised me and you guarantee me that Allah subhanho wa Taala will build me a house in paradise. Now why is he asking this? Because it was the words of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam manga vanilla he must eat and Ben Allahu Allahu byton, transgender, and
this is on the front of fire, that whoever builds a house for the sake of Allah subhanho wa Taala builds a Masjid for the sake of Allah subhanho wa Taala. Allah subhanho wa Taala will build for him a house in paradise. So even though he knew this, and if he's hesitant, he's like, how can I make a promise on behalf of a lesson? I don't want to honor I don't know who you are. I don't know what your intention is. And I don't know where this wealth is coming from. I cannot make this promise. But I'm the man he was a scholar of Hadith. And he had full conviction in the words of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. So as he struggled with his own intention, he tells this man, that if
your intention is pure, then I promise you that Allah
What's odd will build you a house in paradise. That night Adorama Nibbana. Behind him, he goes to sleep and he sees a dream. And in this dream, he sees an enormous mansion. The likes that you will only see in your dreams, Pinilla, multiple floors, multiple rooms, multiple windows, made of the best things that you can imagine has the most beautiful fragrance, the most luscious garden, and the back is just filled with horses and all these other beautiful animals. So, man, he asked the angels who are there with him, Who does this house you belong to. And the angels respond a belongs to that man who may no one wanted to give for the sake of Allah subhanho wa Taala to build a Masjid. He
said, I will build a house for the sake of Allah subhanho wa Taala if he builds me a house, go and tell this man that you have seen his house and that Allah subhanho wa Taala has prepared it for him already. So he wakes up in the morning and he runs to that man and he says By Allah, I have seen your house in paradise spend in the way of Allah subhanho wa Taala. And the man went on to dedicate his whole life to just building massages, because he will didn't want just one of those houses. He wanted many of those houses in the hereafter. My dear brothers and sisters, I want to leave you with one last beautiful story.
Tonight when you're going to be asked to give some of you are going to struggle internally. Some of it may be shaytaan whispering that don't spend, you have a lot of expenses coming up. Your children are need to go and going to need to go to university, your children will want to get married, you have to buy a new car you have to do X, Y and Zed and she Dawn is going to emotionally blackmail you with those things. And then for other people, they may have genuine concerns. Some may have lost their job or they may be job insecurity, that their job is at risk right now. And he just thinks that we cannot afford to spend in the way of Allah subhana wa Tada. But I want to leave you with a
story of a companion by the name of the eyebrow don't know Saudi Arabia Allahu anhu, whom one day was in the masjid of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam as the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was asking people to get in the way of Allah subhanho wa Taala because the Muslim community was struggling to go on an expedition and they needed the money at that time. So as the Prophet salallahu alaihe salam is asking who is going to give who is going to give who is going to give even though at about the Messiah was so poor, he didn't have anything. He says the auto Shula I will give, so promises seldom asks him What will you give, and he says the auto Sula. You know how poor I
am that I own nothing of this dunya except for for my upper garment and my lower garment. And if it was permissible for me, I would have given my lower garment as well. But here's my upper garment, in the way of Allah subhanho wa Taala. And he donated half of his wealth right there. And then now you may think Subhanallah, that's very profound, a poor man donating half of his wealth. But this story doesn't end here. My dear brothers and sisters, a little brother who Saudia, he goes to the front of the machine, and he knows that people are going to be coming inside of the masjid to give. So as he's waiting there, he's hoping that people will give him sadaqa because of how poor he is, so that
he can go and give sadaqa to the Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam. So he went out of his way to collect that money for the sake of Allah to give it to the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. But as people are coming into the masjid, because the prophets I send them is announcing who is going to give who's going to give. They're not giving any money to any of the poor people in the masjid. They're going directly to the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam and giving their sadaqa and it is at that time that they have no Surya he started to weep and he started to cry. It was such a sincere cry that Allah subhanho wa Taala preserved it in the Quran. Now I want you to think to
yourself, why is it not about the serie rhodiola Hondo crying at this time? Is he crying because the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam continues to ask and say give and give and give and give? And he's getting annoyed and frustrated. Why does the processor and keep asking? Why won't he just stop? Is that why he's crying? No, that's not the reason why you're not home. tofield woman a donor he has an allergy to my own phone, that their eyes flooded with tears because they wanted to give in the way of Allah subhanho wa Taala. But they found nothing to give. And that is why the birth of new Saudi Arabia Allahu anhu his eyes flooded with tears. And thus Allah, Allah preserve this moment in
the Quran. Because in our history, our Muslim community has been so generous that it did not paint them
That they used to be asked to get in the way of Allah, this was an honor for them. But they used to cry that when they were asked to give in the way of Allah subhana wa Tada, they had absolutely nothing to give and this pain to them. So tonight when you're being asked to give my dear brothers and sisters, just remember the legacy of this beautiful companion at the bottom of Saudi Arabia love uncle who wanted to get in the way of Allah subhanho wa Taala. But he found nothing to give and spend freely in the way of Allah subhanho wa Taala tonight, for the various reasons that I mentioned. For some of us, it may be the shade that we want in the Day of Judgment. For other people
the way you may want the purity of their hearts. For other people, they may want that massive mansion in paradise. And I'll leave you with the simple fact that tonight Just have certainty, that just as you want a Muslim sustainable community in this beautiful city of Aberdeen, desire your home in paradise much, much more and have conviction and true certainty in your hearts. That whatever you give in the way of Allah subhanho wa Taala Allah subhanho wa Taala will give you much, much more in this life and the next He will bless your money He will bless your job, He will bless your family, he will open up the doors of risk from the sky to pour down upon you just as freely as you give for
his sake in this life. The more you hold back, the more Allah subhanaw taala will hold back from you. Each and every day, as reported in Sohail Bukhari, the angels make dua, they say, Oh Allah, whoever gives in your sake, then bless them much, much more in this life and the next. And whoever withholds from you withhold from them
is a lesson I know it's either going to answer the door of the angels without a shadow of a doubt. And we get to choose which side we want to be upon. My dear brothers and sisters, I pray that Allah subhanho wa Taala opens our hearts tonight to give for his sake, may Allah subhanho wa Taala bless the money that we have, and make it a proof for us on the day of judgment and not against us. And may Allah subhanho wa Taala allow us to reach our goal and targets tonight so that we can help build this machine can sustain this community for future generations that even our grandchildren's grandchildren's will be able to enjoy this beautiful message it does. unlock it for your attention.
salaam aleikum wa rahmatullah wa barakato.
