Mustafa Khattab – Thabit Ibn Qais & The Quran
AI: Summary ©
The importance of learning about the Sahaba title and the Prophet's name for avoiding offenses is discussed, as well as the loud behavior of people in their ear. The speaker emphasizes the importance of being happy and not raising one's opinion, and provides examples of people who were born with strong personalities and were given shields to prevent them from being seen by police. The Quran provides guidance for those with health issues, including healing, and connects with the holy eye to motivate their children to love it. upcoming projects for children to learn the language and add to the material will also involve learning the title.

We talking about
one of the Sahaba
because I always see the importance of learning
about the Sahaba,
connecting our children with the Sahaba,
and
how we can introduce our children to,
the Sahaba to our children as role models
because I know they're attached to their iPhones
and
you know, video games and so on and
so forth and they don't know too much
about the Sahaba. They cannot love them if
they don't know them. Right?
So
the
the way that we introduce the Sahaba to
our children,
we highlight
some aspects, some some good examples from their
lives so that you can introduce the Sahaba
to them and they will find something in
common. They can relate to the Sahaba. Because
as we always say, the Sahaba face challenges
in their lives, and these challenges are not,
you know, different from what we have today.
Financial challenges, political corruption, and so on and
so forth, economic problems, and and how the
Sahaba and how the Prophets dealt with these
issues.
This is something we can,
work with inshallah wata'ala.
The Sahabi for today
has something to do with some good news
that I will share in the second Khubba
So I'm not gonna fast forward to the
second Khubba, we'll have to listen to his
story first.
So this Sahabi
has something to do with the Quran.
His name is Thabit ibn Nuqqais. One of
the greatest Sahaba that you never heard of.
Thabit ibn Nuqqais. And this is someone that
the Prophet
said about
Niamar Rajruk Thabit ibn Nuqais Thabit ibn Nuqais
is a great man. And the Prophet
told him to his face, you are going
straight to Jannah. He told him, you are
going to Jannah.
Why?
If you read his life story,
and you see his
true love, profound attachment to the Quran, and
this is something we can learn from. First
of all, he accepted Islam because he loved
the Quran.
So as soon as he listened to the
recitation of the Quran from Mus'ab Mus'ab ibn
Umayyad. This Sahabi Thabit was from Medina.
So when Mus'ab
recited Quran,
it hit his heart, he was moved, and
he accepted Islam right away. He didn't ask
for like a book on Islamic philosophy, he
didn't ask about the Haqqul Haqqul Philosifa, and
I'm gonna read about No, no, no. Immediately,
as soon as he heard the recitation,
okay, where do I sign? And he accepted
Islam, immediately.
Some of the Sahaba, shiyukh Sahaba, they said,
1 night we're passing by the house of
Thabit ibn the place in Madinah,
and we sell we saw nur coming out
of the house. Nur coming,
Perhaps he was reading Surah Baqarah.
When they came to and
they said, what were you reading last night?
And he was re I said, I was
reading Surah Baqarah, as the prophet
said.
So he was attached to the Quran. He
loved the Quran.
And he loved it so much that in
some cases,
he got in trouble because of his extreme
love for the Quran. And I'll share a
couple of, stories with you.
There are some ayat in the Quran that
talk about Tabit ibn Qaysh without mentioning his
name. Only Zayd Radhiallahu An, who was mentioned
in Surah Azad, but no other Sahabi was
mentioned by name. So Zayd Thabit ibn Nuqayes
is one of the Sahabas who are mentioned
in some Ayat in the Quran. And if
you read in Shannan Nuzul, as Baba Nuzul,
they tell you this ayah was talking about
Tafat ibn Tais, and so on and so
forth.
So basically,
one thing to know about Tafat ibn Tais
before I share the stories with you,
as they say in Arabic. He was hard
of hearing. He had a problem hearing.
So basically, if you wanted to learn Quran
or a teaching from Muhammad SAW He has
to sit in the front. He can't hear
in the back. They didn't have my accent,
and so on and so forth. So he
had to walk all the way to the
front, so he could listen from Muhammad
So basically,
one day he came, the khalqah started, and
he had to move to the front.
So he pushed his way all the to
the front,
and basically he wanted to sit next to
Muhammad
so he came, there was one of the
Sahaba miskey, and he came early, he wanted
to listen to the halata, and Thabit came
and said move.
Yeah.
So he said, well, I came first and
I stopped him. I can't. At first, there
is a spot there in the back. Sit
there. So
Thabit was
very mad. He was very angry that the
Sahabi didn't give him space. Right?
So he sat, a little bit third line
or something, and he called he he called
this Sahaba Yo. Do you have a name?
What is your name?
He said, my name is Fulan.
He said, oh, ibn Fulan.
His mom didn't have a good reputation before
Islam. Like, some Sahaba, they came from, you
know, some background.
You know? They used to do things that
are Haram, but when they took shahara, Allah
Yani changed, their situation.
So
Like, you're you're treating me like you are
someone,
and you came from this background, your mom
had this terrible reputation. If if you came
from a good reputation, we wouldn't be able
to talk to you. So this Sahabi, he
was so embarrassed that he put his face
on the ground, and he said, okay,
you can come take my spot. Right? But
he was broken,
and the prophet
didn't like this exchange.
And this ayah was revealed in Surah Al
Jarat.
Don't make fun of each other, don't call
each other by name, fall organic,
by bad names and so on and so
forth. Don't offend each other. So this ayah
Surah Hajra'a came because of Thabit al Bukays.
Because of his extreme love for the Quran
and listening to Muhammad sallallahu alaihi wa sallam,
so but he learned the, you know, the
difficult way.
There is another ayah,
that talks about Fabbat ibn Kais and so
on and so forth. And the good thing
about the Sahaba including Fabbat ibn Kais, if
there was an ayah of the Quran that
was revealed,
the first thing that comes to their mind
is this Ayah talks about me.
This Ayah talks about me. Right? So if
it talks about salah,
I need to do more salah. If it
talks about something Haram, I need to stay
away from this. Even if I'm not doing
it, I need it is talking to me.
So now, SubhanAllah, someone is doing something haram,
they're selling like alcohol in their convenience store,
their ayah talks about
alcohol in the Quran, it's haram, and there's
is talking about Ibn Khatti. It's not talking
about me. It's talking about my cousin. Yeah
Amur, it's talking to you. Right? So the
Sahaba understood the Quran to be talking to
them, each and every one of them. So
when this ayah was revealed in Surah
Hajarat, Don't raise your voice over the voice
of the prophet
And of course, because Thabit ibn Qaysr
he was hard of hearing.
When he spoke he was very loud.
And if you want to experience this, if
you talk to someone who is listening to
something in their ears, they have the headphones,
and if you ask them something when they
respond to you, they are very loud.
Where is where is myself? What is all
over there?
Like they are fighting with you, but they
don't mean to to raise their voice, but
because they can hear themselves.
I remember one time, one brother,
he married a Canadian sister, and they went
to visit their family back home in North
Africa. I'm not gonna mention their name,
but they do very good.
Right? So
he he was there, he was sitting with
his mom and dad in front of the
house, his wife was in the second floor,
and he said what his wife heard was
fighting, verbal fight.
Like, he was saying something to his mother
like,
and his mother was responding because the sister
didn't speak Arabic. So what she heard was
like,
So she called her husband and she, should
I call 911? Are you guys fighting? I
said, no. My mom is asking me, would
you like some mint in your tea? And
I said, yeah, please put a little bit.
Some people talk like this. They are very
loud, and especially from, you know, our country's
background. Some people are very loud.
If they talk to someone over the phone,
you can hear them from Brampton. Right? Because
they are very loud.
That, like, it is as if they pretend
the phone is not there, and they are
talking to the guy from here. Right? Very
loud. Taibid ibn Tais was doing like this,
but for a reason. Because he he was
hard of hearing. He has a problem in
his ears. So when the ayah came, don't
raise your voice to Muhammad
and the Sahaba understood it to mean, don't
raise your voice, or
don't call him by his first name, don't
say Muhammad,
because Allah calls him in the Quran either,
Yayuhun Nabi, Yayuhar Rasul,
or it could also mean
don't put your opinion over his. If the
prophet
says in an authentic hadith, do it this
way or this way, don't say, but I
think
who are you? Shut up. If the prophet
said in an authentic hadith, this is halam,
this is halal, and it is sup especially
if it is supported by the Quran, you
have no opinion because the sharia is for
Allah through his prophet
So Thabit ibn Tais,
he thought that the ayah is talking about
him because he was very loud.
He said, you know what? I'm doomed because
I raised my voice. And the ayah says
at the end, Fatah Bata'amalikum, your your good
deeds will be lost, wasted.
He said, I'm gonna stay in my house,
just go for namaz, pray, and leave fast.
Jadi jadi. After salah, just run to your
house. Don't talk to the Prophet
don't attend the khalatabiz. Because if you allow
it, you are doomed.
But the Prophet
missed him. He would give the talk, Fabbat
is not there. So he send 1 of
the sahabat, the prophet wants to talk to
you.
He came to the prophet okay, what is
the problem? And he said, You Rasulullah, I
have 3 problems here. Three big problems for
me. Number 1,
I like it when people say good things
about me.
Maybe for Allah, this is not good, and
I think this is bad for me. And
number 2,
I love beauty, and Allah doesn't like arrogance.
And number 3, I have a loud voice,
and I feel like if I talk to
you and you know I'm a loud person,
then maybe this will be bad in the
eyes of Allah. It will be like a
sign of disrespect, then Khalasa. I just said
that to Muhammad Khalasa.
And subhanAllah,
I will tell you what the Prophet SAW
told him, but a small footnote here in
the Khutba.
If you do something good, and people say
good things about you, it is not a
bad thing.
Especially if this is not something you are
looking for, like when you are giving salatah,
you are not doing it for the people,
you are doing it for Allah, but they
said, alhamdulillah, this brother has done a good
job.
You should feel
happy that Allah
guided you to do something good. You should
be proud of yourself.
You're not doing it for showing off. You
are happy that Allah guided you to do
good.
Just like you are ashamed of yourself
if Allah left you to do something bad.
You should have this this feeling inside of
you. Because some people feel discouraged to do
something good in public because
maybe I'm showing off. No. If you're doing
it,
then people see you, they are motivated by
you. Alhamdulillah, there's no problem here. So the
prophet
told him, Amayur Udikar
and Taisha Hamidan.
Wouldn't you be happy
if Allah
gives you an honorable life in this dunya?
You're an honorable man. You're a very good
man.
And you will die like a shahid, and
you'll go straight to Jannah. The prophet
told him, you are going to Jannah 100%.
You're going straight to Jannah.
Another ayat
that talks about Thabit ibn Qais and his
wife in the Quran, in Surah Ash,
ayah number 9, where Allah
speaks about something that Thabit did and his
wife did with him. So basically, they heard
there was this person who was fasting for
2 3 days in a row, they just
drink water, they didn't have anything to eat.
So Thabit told his wife, let's invite him
to eat food with us. They didn't have
much in the house, but he said let's
share with him. So he invited him. So
he came, and he told his wife, as
soon as we start to eat, just pretend
you are getting something from there, from the
shelf, and turn the lights off. So our
guest will be able to eat all the
food, and we pretend we're just eating there
with him in in order not to embarrass
him, so he can eat and and be
full.
In the morning, the prophet
told him, Inna Allahuqad ajiba ajiba minsanirikumma
bidaifikumma Allah
was impressed
by what you did and your wife with
your guests last night.
So we ask Allah
to give us the best in this life
and the best in the life to call,
mister
Last night sorry. Last time I spoke about
the dreams and and the interpretation of dreams.
Those of you who are here, those who
came, but they were dreaming in the chuppah,
they checked out, and they were thinking about
biryani, about burgers, and
Last time I didn't have the chance to
talk about something related to Thabit ibn Qais
when it comes to dreams.
So basically, they say in Firkuh, in Islamic
history
no
wasayyah in Islamic history was approved and fulfilled
based on a dream,
except on a dream of, Khabid ibn Nqais.
There's an exception here. So basically, if your
dad or your mom comes to you in
a dream and say beta
You have to divorce your wife, don't listen
to that. It is not in this case.
If they tell you, you have to sell
the house or kick your brothers out, don't
listen to that. It is not
But if they tell you give sadaqa, go
for umrah, alhamdulillah, it's a good thing you're
not harming anyone in this case.
So basically, Fabbat ibn Nuqais, as the prophet
told him, you will die shahid. He actually
died shahid, as the prophet
said.
So basically, after he died, he left his
shield,
Filmarag, in the battlefield,
and one of the Sahaba saw it, and
he took it.
And he put it in his tent, and
he covered it with something so no one
could see it. So Fafid ibn al Qais
came to another Sahabi in a dream, and
he told him this person took my shield,
he put it in that place, he covered
it with something, go take it, give it
to Khaled ibn Walid,
the army leader, and asked Khaled to give
it to Abu Bakr
Khalifa and tell him to sell the shield
and pay my debts and do this and
this and this. He gave him his walsiyyah.
So when the walsiyyah came to Abu Bakr,
the law, he applied the walsiyyah,
although the walsiyyah came after Tawhid passed away.
They say this is the only time in
Islamic history that a walsiyyah
was applied or fulfilled after someone's death. This
is the only exception.
So now, the good news. The reason why
I'm talking to you about Thabit ibn Atayes
and his connection with the Quran, and how
great can, you know, how
great his connection with the Quran is because
of this good news
that will cause some of you to be
dancing in the parking lot of tasala, and
some of you will freak out, they will
never come again.
Ramadan is coming in less than 3 months.
Oh my goodness.
I was trying to forget. But anyway, Ramadan
is coming in less than 3 months. This
is an amazing time to connect with Allah
Wa Ta'ala. So in the last 2, 3
minutes of the life of this Khuba, we'll
talk a little bit about your connection with
the Quran. How can Quran motivate you?
I've given shaharas to 100 of people, alhamdulillah,
over the last 13 years.
And I saw videos of people coming to
Islam and taking Shaharab.
People like Kat Stevens, those of you who
are our seniors, they remember back in the
19 seventies eighties, Kat Stevens was now Yusuf
Islam, came to Islam because of Quran.
And many people,
Yusuf Istis and many other great du'a now,
they came to Islam because they just read
the Quran
in broken translations.
But still Allah gave them Hidayah through, you
know, these translations of the Quran. They don't
speak Arabic.
So let's say if you speak Arabic or
you can navigate your way through the Quran,
through translation,
it took it should touch your heart. You
should have this connection with the Quran. The
Quran, as we always say,
Shifa.
Allah calls it Shifa in the Quran. He
says it's a healing,
not medicine, healing.
Right? The difference is Shifa, it will give
you healing for sure. Medicine, maybe.
You go to the doctor, you have a
fever or or something, they give you medicine,
it doesn't work. Your condition will get worse.
It's a medicine,
but Allah calls the Quran chiefa healing for
sure.
But sometimes
will pretend
that the Quran is just there for Barakah,
you put it on, like, the dashboard in
your car,
especially if you are running away from the
cops because you don't have insurance, you don't
want to get tickets, you put it there
for Barakah,
Put 1 in the front, 1 in the
back.
And and some people, as we always say,
their connection with the Quran if someone dies
in the family, they play Quran.
And back home, SubhanAllah, if we play Quran
in our house back home, we have a
guest, the first thing they will say, subhanAllah,
who died?
Who minmat? Like, they commend the Quran with
the dead.
But Allah how Allah
calls up talks about Quran in the
If you read Surah, you see in this
Quran,
gives a reminder to those who are truly
alive. It talks about the living. Right?
So sometimes,
like, we have all these illnesses that we
have, our challenges with our kids,
financial issues, political problems, social problems, this and
that, political whatever.
And the healing is in the Quran. You
just pretend like someone who is sick, and
they have the medicine in the fridge, but
they are too lazy to take it out
and use the medicine. Right? So the Quran
is there, we need to be connected
with the Quran,
and we need to make our kids love
the Quran.
Usually the Quran, the relationship with the Quran,
they memorize it because they have to, because
someone is gonna take their electronics away, or
they will send them back home.
Right? So when the Quran comes to their
mind,
because of how they memorize the Quran with,
some of the shiyyih back home, right, They
give you a hard time. So this is
what you remember. You remember Al Asayed, the
stake, and no. We need to make them
fall in love with the Quran. Explain to
them in a way they can understand.
They read beautiful stories in the Quran. How
can they relate to the stories? We need
to bring it, you know, to life in
in their lives, and we need to attach
them to the Quran. They cannot do this
on their own. We have to introduce it
to them in a good way. In many
cases, I visit people and, subhanAllah,
their children are lost in electronics, and iPads
and iPhones, they're playing the whole day You're
sitting with their even if you talk to
the kids
They're sitting in a corner playing with their
iPad or their iPhone. They're just like zombies,
man.
I know, right? So they're sitting there, I
call the people of the cave, Al Al
Kahf. They just sit in the dark and
they play with their phones.
And I'm sure some of you many of
you have zombies at home. Right?
We love them, we care about them, but
tell them, you know, we love you.
This is the time to learn and explore
and see the world. Go to the backyard
with a magnifying glass and explore and learn.
Yeah, you can have electronic time, like maximum
1 hour a day.
The kids hate me in the back.
One hour a day is the maximum they
can have at this point. There has to
be time to pray, time to play, time
to take talk to their brothers and sisters,
time to play with their friends. Then electronic
time, homework time, and so on and so
forth. Right? This is the time. So we
need to connect them with the Quran. There
are a couple of projects that I'm working
on that will make the Quran super easy
to understand, inshaAllah.
This is not commercial, by the way.
One for the kids, one for adults.
So we hope that Allah, subhanahu wa ta'ala,
will give us the life and the strength
to, to make this come to reality, inshallah
So this is just a reminder. We'll share
some with, some more reminders
in the future, inshallah.
We ask Allah
to give us the Barakah of the Quran,
connect us with the Quran. We ask Allah
to put nur in our homes, to put
light in our our hearts, and ask Allah
to make our children love the Quran and
to be good Muslims. Ameer, Ameer, abalameer.
Wassalidahumala
said no. Muhammadu waala aaalu sahmath maiwa aum
salaam.
