I bear witness that there's none worthy of
our worship except Allah, and
I bear witness that Muhammad, salallahu alayhi wa
sallam, is the seal of the prophets and
the final messenger to all of humanity.
Whomever Allah, subhanahu wa ta'ala, guides, there is
none
to guide. And whomever Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala
needs to go astray, there is none to
guide.
So one of the scholars, his name is
Abu Bakr Al Hayash, he said, Wallahi, Abu
Bakr Al Salih
never got ahead of us in terms of
Hassanat and in terms of his high status
in Jannah,
not because of his salah and his fasting
and his charity. No. He said he got
ahead of us because of the faith which
was engraved in his heart and because of
the sincerity
of his actions. This is why.
And Omar Ibn Khattab
used to make a lot of dua
and to say, oh, Allah,
purify
all of my deeds and make all of
them purely for your sake.
And no one, no human being should have
a share in my deeds. He means I'm
not doing this for any human
being. I'm doing it only purely for you,
So the scholars
define
sincerity in
in many different ways, but one of the
most,
reasonable definitions is to do things purely for
the sake of Allah, Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala,
not for showing off. This is the mean.
So if you do something purely for the
sake of Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala by purifying
your intentions,
then you will get the full reward.
But if you do it, just people will
say, then the prophet
says in the authentic hadith that not only
you will lose your reward, but you'll also
be punished
for sharing
people and associating people in their word. In
this authentic hadith
in Al Hakim, the Mustadrak, a man came
to the prophet, sallallahu alaihi wa sallam, and
said, oh, prophet of Allah,
what if I do a good deed hoping
to get the reward from Allah and hoping
that people will say something nice about me?
So the prophet, salaam, said, you will get
nothing.
The man repeated the question, oh, prophet of
Allah, what if I do something good hoping
to get the reward and people will speak
highly of me? What do I get? The
prophet, salaam, said nothing.
Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala accepts what is done
purely for his sake and not for people.
So this is the first Hadith.
And this also authentic hadith in Muslim Al
Uma Ahmed Al Tamili.
The prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam says, what
I fear for you, my Ummah, is not
the dajjal. What I fear most for you
is not the dajjal,
but minor shirk.
So they said, what is minor shirk, You
Rasulullah? Because we know major shirk is to
associate
others in the worship of Allah. So he
said minor shirk is showing
off, associating
people in doing good deeds.
Then the prophet
said, on the day of judgment, when people
would come to get their rewards from Allah,
they would be told,
go to those to whom you used to
show off in the dunya and get your
reward for them. I have no reward for
you.
We did, so people will say, they said,
so you already got your reward. I got
no reward for you.
So this is the second Hadith.
So in this 3rd Hadid inside Muslim,
the 3 people that will be punished before
everybody else on the day of judgment, a
Shahid
and a scholar
and a generous person.
So Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala asked the first
one. What did you do with the blessings
I gave you? So the first one will
say, I struggled in your way until I
feel, you know, dead. So Allah subhanahu wa
ta'ala know you didn't do it for my
sake, but you did it so people will
say, oh, he is a brave guy.
Then the second person, Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala
will ask him, what did you do with
the knowledge I gave you? He will say,
oh, Allah, I taught it to people, and
I was teaching them Quran.
And,
I taught them everything I knew. So Allah
Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala was saying, no. You are
a light. You taught people not from a
safe, but you taught them so they will
say, oh, he is a scholar.
Then the 3rd person, Allah will ask him,
what did you do with the money I
gave you? He will say, oh, Allah. I
spent it in your way. I was putting
money here and there. So Allah will kind
of say, no. You're alive. You did it
so people will say, he is a generous
guy. You didn't do it purely for
my sake.
So the scholars say there are some signs
that if you find these signs, then you're
doing things purely for Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala.
So the signs are number 1, you always
belittle your good deeds. Every time you do
a salah, you blame yourself. I should have
I should have done better than this.
If you give a charity,
you should always blame yourself that I should
have given more than this.
So you always belittle
yourself, your good deeds, and you always motivate
yourself to do more.
So Imam Abdullah is secondary. He said a
beautiful statement in this regard. He said,
a sin
that humbles you
and brings you back to Allah Subhanahu Wa
Ta'ala is much better than a good deed
that makes you arrogant.
And this is a very profound statement.
Number 2, the second sign of this insert
of your good deeds
is every time you do a good deed,
you are afraid that Allah will never accept
from you, so you always try to purify
your intention.
So the prophet says in authentically
that
when this ayah was revealed, those who give
or make good deeds and their hearts are
shaking with fear,
Aisha says, O Prophet of Allah,
is this
ayah talking about
those who commit adultery, those who drink, and
those who steal? So the prophet
said, no. The ayah talks about those who
fast, They give sadaqah, and they make Hajj,
and they pray all the time in the
masjid, but they are afraid that Allah will
not accept from them because of their intentions.
So they always try to purify their intentions.
And then
So the third sign is that you do
something purely for the sake of Allah.
Regardless of what people will say about you.
You don't care if you if they say
you are a generous guy because he gives
sadaqah or not. You don't care if they
say you are a good guy because if
because you come to the salah or the
time or not. What people say doesn't mean
anything to you. You only do it purely
for the sake of Allah.
We conclude with this.
The prophet talks
about those who do good deeds purely for
the sake of Allah, and the people say
good things about them. Not because they wanted
to, but because people
say this about them anyway. They didn't request,
praise from anyone. So this man came to
the prophet and says,
what if I do something purely for the
sake of Allah and people say good things
about me? So the prophet says, this is
a good sign that
Allah is accepting from you, and he is
giving you the reward in Azra and in
Duniya. That's Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala
We'll just give a a few examples about
sincerity and the lack of sincerity, then we'll
conclude with this, inshallah. Number 1, sometimes we
we sat with, some people. I'm not talking
about any particular person.
And there's a guy who doesn't pray at
all.
And if somebody or the group goes to
pray, he goes with them. Not because he
wants to, but because he's afraid that he
will say he's not a good guy. But
if these people were not there, he would
never pray.
So this is not sincere.
I remember a long time ago,
Also, there's this example of this guy,
all of a sudden, he started to come
to all the salawat, Mashallah, and pray. And
I'm not talking about him. So he was
coming all the time to the salah, and
I said, you know, why do you come
to the masjid and pray, alhamdulillah, before you
you never showed your face in the place.
Why? So he said, because I love the
Masjid so much, I love the imam, okay,
blah blah, all that stuff.
Then later in the story, I realized he
was coming to the Masjid because there is
a sister who comes to the Masjid and
prays all the time, and he wanted to
propose.
So for her family to accept him, he
had to come to the masjid, so they
will say, hey, yeah. He goes to the
masjid. He must be a good guy. So
that was not done purely.
Also, politicians back home,
in the parliament or the ministers and that
stuff.
So
if if you decide for, you know, elections,
you see them all the time in the
masjid, shaking people's hands and hugging them and
kissing them and crying in the salah, giving
charity and all that stuff.
But after the elections, after they went,
So,
I've seen some weddings, and I'm not talking
by the way, I'm not talking about Edmonton.
I've been to many places, and I'm invited
to weddings, and I see
people wasting food, and they are wasting money
for no reason.
And the women, they are not, you know,
decently dressed, and when I enter the room,
they start to cover themselves, and when I
start to leave, they start to take off
with clothes.
Are you doing this for the Sheikh? You
should do it for for for Sabir ibn,
not for me. I don't have Zaynel, I
don't have Himfahr. I'm nobody.
Then after they do this, a few weeks
later, they call me again, what?
There is a divorce.
There is no
sincerity.
So
there was this,
funeral and this brother, he made a big
Walima and invited everyone. And I'm not trying
to criticize anyone, by the way. But it
is an obligation on me to give Nasiyyah
to people.
So there was this big on the funeral
day and also on the 3rd day, and
the brother spent about 3,000 to $5,000
and I told him,
and may Allah have mercy on you. Why
did you do this? You should have given
the money to the graveyard a salakahjariyah or
to a masjid salakahjariyah.
He said, wallahi, I didn't want to make
food, all that food for people, but I
was afraid that people would say, oh, he
doesn't like his mother because his mother passed
away. So I said, you're doing it for
the people, not
