AI: Summary ©
I bear witness that there is none worthy
of our worship except Allah
And I bear witness that Muhammad
is the seal of the prophets and the
final messenger to all of humanity.
Whoever Allah
guides, there is none to misguide. And whoever
Allah
leaves astray, there is none to guide. Alright.
We praise Allah
and we thank him for giving us the
life and opportunity to fast in this month.
If you are here today listening to the
Khutba and fasting in the month of Ramadan,
you are one of the lucky few.
Because there are millions out there in this
world who are not observing the fast in
the month of Ramadan because
they are not Muslim. They are not fasting
and they are not experiencing this amazing opportunity
from Allah
And there's many Muslims who are not able
to fast because they are sick, they're old,
they're chattling, some sisters are pregnant and so
on and so forth.
And also there are some Muslims who were
desperate to be in your place today
to be fasting and listening to Khutba,
to comfort Taraweeh al Qiyam,
but they couldn't do it because they died
before Ramadan.
And this is an amazing opportunity.
But SubhanAllah,
we don't get this point, we don't understand
the value and the significance of this month.
And the best example for this, I always
tell the story,
this is a brother who came to me
first day of Ramadan back in 2010,
2009.
I was in the US, 1st day of
Ramadan, 1st night of Taraweeh, and this brother
came and he said, imam I have a
question for you. And I said, oh he
must be excited. He has a question about
Ramadan or something. Okay. What do you want?
And he said,
when is Aid?
Shakhrani.
When is Aid? We're just starting man, you
know,
when you start the car in the morning
and you're just warming up and you say,
oh, where is Aid? And here is the
same guy who came last night of Ramadan,
you know they were looking for the moon
and he said imam
please I beg you beg eat tomorrow I'm
gonna die
and he said dude
I don't have the moon in my hand
I don't have the remote control for the
moon if it is there eat tomorrow if
it is not there we have to fast
another day
he almost cried
half an hour later they made the announcement
Eid is tomorrow and he was dancing in
the street then he was giving out candy
in the masjid subhanAllah
so sometimes we miss the whole point about
the month of Ramadan
the month of Sabr getting close to Allah
Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala. If we understand the value
of this month,
you would pray that the entire year is
Ramadan. If you if you really understand the
Iqmah and the point of this month,
the best way to understand and get the
concept of Sabr and you train yourself to
be Sabr in this month is by reading
Quran. There are so many different stories about
Sabr in the Quran and I think one
of the most prime examples of Sabr in
the Quran is the story of Yusuf alaihis
salam the ulama say and we'll get into
some details later insha'Allah
there are 3 different types of Sabr
Sabr al Musiba if something terrible happens
and Sabr alata'ab Sabr to do something good
Ibadah
and Sabra Al Masih Sabra to keep yourself
away from Haram These are the 3 different
types of Sab and all of them are
found in the Surah of Yusuf as we
will explain
So now
Surah Yusuf is a very special Surah. There
is a lot of suspense in the story.
It's a very unpredictable story. If you read
the Surah for the first time, it's very
unpredictable.
Unlike other stories in the Quran, Musa alaihis
salamu fir'awn Far'awn is a bad guy, he
dies in the end. Okay. There's no suspense.
Similar like other stories,
with bad people, they get destroyed at the
end. But Surah Yusuf
Allah calls it in the Quran because it
is very unpredictable, especially when you're you're reading
it for the first time. It is basically
like being on a roller coaster. This is
how it felt back in 2,000
10. I was in Atlanta, Georgia,
and they said they have the biggest roller
coaster in the world.
And I was on this roller coaster for
the first time in my life. I didn't
start with a smaller
roller coaster like for the baby one.
No. I I went to the biggest one.
Okay. Where is this big biggest roller coaster?
Let me get in.
1st few seconds, I was crying like a
baby. Kick me off. Kick me off. No.
They said you have to, you know, reach
the end. I almost died.
I went off, I throw up terrible day,
big drama for me
So now
there is a lot of ups and downs
You don't know if you're up, you don't
know if you're down You feel like a
feather Zairisha when you're on the roller coaster
You have no control
Ups and downs, ups and downs. And this
is the exact same feeling when you read
the story of Yusuf alaihis salam at least
for the first time.
So this is what I mean. 1st page,
the dream, the sun and the moon and
the stars making sajat to him. He's going
be an important person.
This is amazing. Nothing can go wrong. Next
page.
His brothers are making conspiracies to kill him
and get rid of him.
Man, this is terrible.
Then he ends up being sold into slavery.
He's thrown in the jail,
and and and he is in the well.
And and this is very terrible, you see.
Like, there's no light at the end of
the tunnel. There is no hope for this
man. End of story, there's no hope for
him. He ends up in the king of
Arasiz, in the palace of Arasiz, a good
life. And Al Aziz took care of him,
he told his
wife treat him honorably, take good care of
him, treat him like a son.
So he say,
this is amazing, nothing can go wrong. This
is amazing, he is in good hands.
Next page, the wife Gul Aziz is busting
all the moves,
and the women are trying to seduce him.
He ends up in jail. This is terrible.
And he's saying, SubhanAllah, this is so sad.
Where is justice? Like, this is so bad.
Like, you know, he went to jail for
built the city for several years. This is
so bad. There's no hope for him.
Because if he was living with us here,
if you go to jail for several years,
no hope. Like, you are not gonna get
a job. Your life would be difficult. You
cannot marry someone.
Your life becomes very difficult. There is no
hope for him.
Next thing,
he meets the king,
the king employs him in his service, and
he became Al Aziz himself. He became the
strongest man in the country,
and he has all authority over money, food
supplies, and everything.
And so, subhanAllah, you feel the roller coaster
up and down, up and down, up and
down throughout the Surah. It's very unpredictable.
And our lives in this world resembles the
story of Yusuf alaihis salam. No one of
us will be comfortable for the rest of
your life. No one will suffer forever.
So for example, if you have a difficulty,
you're looking for a wife, you're
riskless, you're looking for someone to marry,
and your life is difficult. But eventually, inshallah,
you will find someone. If you got laid
off, eventually you will find a job. And
if you have a good life, a healthy
life, expect some terrible things to happen. You
everyone is tested in a different way. And
Allah will test you with good and bad
as Allah says in the Quran. And
I always say, subhanAllah,
when I'm driving
and I see the red lights from far
away,
for me this is good news. For some
people it's bad. Because by the time I
go there,
it will be green,
and I'll drive through. And if you see
green from a distance, for a lot of
people this is good news, but this is
actually bad. By the time you make it
clear, it's gonna be red.
So think of your life this way. If
something bad happens, maybe it will turn out
to be something good. And if something bad
hap good happens, it turns out to be
something terrible.
And this is something we can learn from
Surah Yusuf. Now, I'm gonna get a little
bit deep into the Surah.
We know that Surah Yusuf
just like the rest of the Quran, the
Prophet SAW was not giving a hard copy
of the Quran. Like, Jibril alaihis salam didn't
come. Here is, you know, here is the
Quran, a hard copy of the Quran. Here
you go. No. It didn't work like this.
So the prophet
received the Quran piecemeal
every time you receive the Surah, akhiwayat
and so on and so forth.
So basically,
if you look at the Surah Surah Yusuf,
yes it was revealed orally to the Prophet
SAW Salam. It was not given in a
written form.
If you look at the Surah,
there is what they call, there is a
new science, they call it ring composition.
I know I'm getting a little bit deep
into the Surah, but this will help you
appreciate
the greatness and the Marjeezah of the Quran.
So as I said the Prophet SAW received
the Quran in oral form,
and it's still the Surah has what they
call the ring composition. Which means,
if you look at the first half,
it mirrors the second half of the Surah.
So basically Surah Yusuf is surah number 12
in the Quran. Yusuf alaihis salam was 12
years old when he was taken away from
his dad.
And the Surah basically has 12 sections. If
you can divide the Surah into sections or
themes, maldu'aal, it has 12 secondtions
minus the, the introduction and the conclusion.
So basically, if we divide it into the
3,
the sorry, the 12 main sections of the
Surah,
you will start with the introduction
to talk about Ahasan Al Tasas the wisdom
of revealing the Quran and invitation to the
truth
We start from the back, last section. Conclusion,
it talks about
the reason why the Surah was revealed and
it talks about the Quran, it's from Allah
and an invitation to the truth. The exact
same thing. And a warning to the kuffar
if they deny the revelation of the Quran.
Section number 1 from the front,
the dream of Yusuf alaihis salam. Section number
1 from the back which is theme number
12,
the dream of Yusuf alaihis salam comes true.
The sun and the moon, his dad and
his mom and, 11 siblings. The stars, they
make Sanjat to him. Theme number 2 from
the front, the brothers make a conspiracy to
get rid of him.
Theme number 2 from the back, which is
11 here, the brothers apologize for making a
conspiracy to kill him. The wife of Khalazi
is number 3, busting all the moves to
seduce him. And number 3 from the back,
she's apologizing, she's saying, no he's innocent, he
didn't do anything.
In number 4 from the front, the women
in the city, they are trying to seduce
Yusuf to comply with the woman's,
movements.
And number 9, which is, 4 from the
back,
the women say no Yusuf is innocent. He
didn't do anything wrong.
Theme number 5 from the front, Yusuf alaihis
salam is in jail.
Theme number 5 from the back which is
8, Yusuf alaihis salam's innocence is declared. And
number 6, the king sees a dream. And
number 6 from the back which is 7,
the king's dream is interpreted. So these are
the main themes in the Surah. They call
it rain composition.
The first half of the Surah is reflected
in the second half. It mirrors the second
half. And this style is very common in
the Quran.
It's found in Surah Baqarah, Surah An Essay,
and many other Surahs. Surah Buruj, Ayah Kursi.
It's very common in the Quran. The second
half will resemble the first half in the
Quran. And this is why some of you
wonder why in the world the first
part of surah Nisa talks about inheritance,
then it talks about so many different things,
and the last page of the surah talks
about inheritance.
Whereas the previous pages, they have nothing to
do with inheritance. The same thing. The second
half mirrors the first half. You can't tie
the end of the Surah with the very
beginning of the Surah. And this is something
amazing. No one can do this except Allah
Now,
we'll move to the some of the lessons
very quickly, inshallah. In 5 minutes, we can
learn from, this amazing Surah.
As I mentioned,
there are 3 different types of Sabr. Sabr
al al Musseebah. If something bad happens, like
someone dies, you got laid off, your car
broke down,
your cat died,
they took your tooth off, shakhramukh,
right?
And you're bleeding, you're in pain, you can't
eat, you can't drink your favorite tea, coffee,
you can't eat biryani, subhanAllah. This is like
Musiva Kabira. Big problem.
Tamla Kubra.
And in the story of Yusuf Alaihi Salam,
same thing happened to him. He was taken
away from his dad,
he was thrown in the well, he was
sold into slavery, and they were saying terrible
things about his personality, he's an amazing person,
And he ended up in jail. And he
was patient. You will never ever see Yusuf
alaihis salaam complaining in the surah. Not once.
The second time and of course, Sabra al
Musseeba. Some of us, if you are not
able to eat during the day of Ramadan,
Fulfillahi, fasting
19, 18 hours is not easy. It it
is difficult. I I agree. It is difficult.
And we will understand why Allah subhanahu wa
ta'ala doesn't talk about the difficulties that we
have in the salah, in the fasting.
And and this is something we learn from
the story, and I'm gonna get into this
into, in a second InshaAllah Ta'ala.
And some of you who smoke,
if you don't
take nicotine for 18, 19 hours, this is
Musima Kabira. Like, your hair is about to
explode, and you are ready to snap on
anyone. Like, you know, someone will give you
Saran, they feel like, oh. I just saw,
like,
in Egypt, this, cab driver, he has this,
you know, sign on the back of the
car, and he said,
they,
the driver is saw if he is fasting,
you know, beware, like, you know, be careful,
you know.
So Sabr when something terrible happens.
And a sabra'ar'atah,
sabra'ar'atah
basically that
you stand up at night in salah, you
pray 11 raka'at
or some of you they follow the Khalafi
method, they do 22 raka'at. And if you're
a maliki, good luck. 36 raka'at, you know.
So this is a big number of raka'ah
you pray at night, and you have to
wake up in the morning for work, if
you go to work, fasting 19 hours, giving
zakah,
dua, reading this is not easy. This is
not easy.
So we said as Sabra al Musiba,
patience when difficult things happen. And as Sabra
al Ta'a, patience to do something good. And
this is also found in the story of
Yusuf alaihis salam. He's always good throughout the
story. He didn't do anything bad in the
story. And actually, subhanAllah,
you know a good person
if they are good in good times and
they are good in difficult times. Like Yusuf
alaihis salam, when he was in jail,
they said, the 2 inmates, they said,
You are a good man. Because he was
always sharing his food, he was always caring
about them.
And when he became Al Aziz of Egypt,
he had all the authority, he had all
the power. His brothers said,
You are a good man. So he was
good in good times and he was good
in difficult times.
Right? Asafra'alal
attaa.
Because otherwise if someone like Yusuf alaihis salam
they, you know, took him away from his
dad, they sold him into slavery, he was
in the well, he was about to die,
and he was in jail.
Any one of us, if you if you
come to a point of authority,
what will you do? They try to kill
you.
Someone needs to remove his car, bzmw829.
You're blocking somebody else and you need to
remove
the Qur'an shawl. So if imagine if your
own brothers, your flesh and blood or someone,
your friends,
they did something like this to you. They
took you away from your family, and they
say in tafsir,
he was away from his dad for 40
years, some say 80 years. 80 years he
was away and
all the bad things they said about him
they called him a thief at shore in
Yasrib fathasataahulamu
minqar
and he was called you know, he was
in the well, he was in jail and
the women, the fitna of the way all
these terrible things
any one of us if you come to
a point of authority what will you do
to people who did this to you for
40 or 80 years?
This is
why you will make an example of them,
you'll fix him up.
But he never complained, he never did anything
wrong to them.
He was always
there for them. Even when they came desperate
looking for money and food, he gave them.
No problem. He
gave them.
And this is something we can learn from
Yusuf alaihis salam. Sabra al Musiva,
Sabra al Tawah, and As Sabra Ala, and
Masiyyah staying away from Haram.
Like Yusuf alaihi sallam, the women
and the wife of Al Aziz. He was
in her house. He could do anything he
wants, but no. He protected himself from Haram.
And the women were inviting him. He kept
himself from haram.
And his brothers, when they came, he could
have broke their necks. He could have given
them a black eye. Same thing. Like, he
could have done the same to the man,
one of the 2 inmates.
Yusuf
gave him the interpretation
remember me to the king so I get
out
the man got busy, he's enjoying his life
outside and Yusuf
had to stay for several years
Then when this inmate came many years later,
they say 9 years. He came back after
9 years, and he was desperate. We need
the interpretation of the King's dream.
He will use it. Get out.
I've been here for years and you forgot
about me. No. I'm not gonna help you.
You guys will die and I'm okay with
it. No. He didn't do this. He gave
him the interpretation. He didn't ask for anything.
And he didn't even
rebuke the guy. He gave him the interpretation.
And we can learn from this when you
are fasting in the month of Ramadan, control
your anger,
and you do a Adana in this month,
you stay away from haram because it's easy.
And this month when you are fasting,
you have lots of time
and you want to kill the time, the
easiest way is to do haram things. Talk
about people,
backbite them, you know, and so on and
so forth. Listen to the haram, look at
the haram. No. You're protecting yourself from all
of this stuff.
Also,
very quickly inshallah, 2 minutes will be done.
Yusuf alaihis salam, he saw at the beginning
of the Surah,
he saw a dream
of the good things that would happen to
him at the end. You being at the
top,
you have the authority,
and the sun and the moon and the
stars, your family will be making sajat to
you and so on and so forth.
But wait a minute, he didn't see a
dream about him
being in the well, being in jail, all
the terrible terrible things that would happen to
him. There is nothing. He didn't see anything.
And the ulama say because
Allah gave him the end result,
you'll be an amazing person, you'll be on
the talk, you will have authority, you will
have an amazing life at the end. And
this is why when these bad things happened
to him, there were small annoyances and they
didn't affect his resolve.
And the same thing, when Allah Subhanahu Wa
Ta'ala talks about Ramadan, he talks about salah,
he talks about Hajj and different Ibadah in
the Quran, Allah doesn't tell you in the
Quran that you will be fasting 19 hours
in Canada
you will be standing up in Taraweeh to
11:22
or 36 rak'ahs in Taraweeh
You have to wake up at 4 in
the morning for sahuril He doesn't talk about
this stuff
Whenever he talks about Ibadah in the Quran,
he says
I give you Bishara of Jannah. You will
have these rivers, you will have this food,
you will this clothes, and and this, that,
that. So now when you all these small
annoyances,
inconveniences
happen to you, and you see the end
result, all these things become so small. You
don't even pay attention. And this is something
we learned from the story of Yusuf alaihis
salam. We have salallahu subhanahu wa ta'ala to
give us the best in this life and
the best in the life to come. Salullahu
wa rahmatullahi
wa
barakamal
So inshallah, I'm gonna conclude with a couple
of announcements.
Last year,
we had a successful fundraiser,
to buy a new carpet and to fix
the parking lot. It's amazing now in the
back, renovate the Masjid and pay for utilities,
water, hydro, maintenance, everything. So next time, inshallah,
next Jum'ah,
we will have a fundraiser inshallah to do
other things to, keep the Masjid up and
running, the maintenance
and the fees for the different things. So
inshallah next time I'm gonna share with you
how much we raised and how much we
spent and how much we need for the
next year inshallah to keep the Masjid maintained
throughout the year, bein Allahi Ta'ala. So please
come next time prepared
And if you have Zakkha Mana money, sadaqa
money, it's okay to give it to the
Masjid. I know there is difference of opinion,
and so on and so forth. But, Mullahi,
if you think that Zakkha should go for
jihad, building and maintaining masajid and Islamic schools
in Canada, this is the best jihad we
can do. Yes. You can give the Zakat
for your money, Zakat for your goal toward
the masjid. Alhamdulillah.
Back home, you can give it to whatever
you can because there, they have Alqaf, they
have the government, they support the Masajid, but
here, we have no support except Zakah and
Sadaqa through your contributions.
And finally, inshaAllah, every night here in the
Masjid we have amazing iftars.
Everyone is welcome. We provide iftars to about
500 people and more in the weekend.
And everyone is welcome, inshaAllah. Families. And also
we have daycare throughout Taraweeh. We start Isha
at 10:30. We have Taraweeh.
We do 11th. We'll both do 11th, then
we continue the 22. Everyone is happy, inshaAllah.
So again, we have,
a babysitting service. If you like to use
the service, it's only $2 per kid, and
you can enjoy taraweeb with, your family, inshaAllah.
We also look for sponsors for the Iftar.
If you like to sponsor an Iftar, the
whole day or half of the Iftawih Iftaw,
you can talk to brother Abdul Salam downstairs
at the front desk. And on top of
that, you will get a tax receipt. We
ask Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala to accept our
Ibadan in this month. We ask Allah to
accept our fasting and our salaatiam
