Music.
I love listening to it. Is this a
problem?
Assalamu Alaikum Warrmatullahi
wabarakatuh.
Yes, we're gonna talk about music.
Now there are a couple of things to
think about. 1st and foremost the scholars of
Islam have differed when it came to listening
to music and it's 2 main groups. The
first, say it's completely haram. Doesn't matter the
lyrics, doesn't matter what instruments
you're using. It's completely haram.
A believer should never have their heart or
their mind attached to music in any way
shape or form. This is the first opinion,
and this is also the majority of the
scholars.
But the second opinion is also interesting, and
that is depending on the lyrics,
depending on the effect and the dependency that
you have on listening to music,
as long as it's okay, it's clean, the
lyrics are okay, the instruments are light and
you can control whether you listen to or
not, when you listen to it or not.
As long as you maintain all of that
control then it's okay, not a big deal.
Well here's a couple of things that I
want you to think about. Number 1,
if the Prophet alaihis salatu wasalam was sitting
with you, what song would you play?
For a lot of us we would probably
pause and think wait a minute,
I don't know if the Prophet alaihis salatu
wa sallam would even be pleased
with the whole idea of me playing a
song for him. And you've got to take
some time and really think about that, think
about what our religion
is built on. We have this connection with
the Quran,
we are praying 5 times a day and
all of that revolves around dhikr, it revolves
around the tilawah and recitation of the Quran
and especially this month of Ramadan. Just look
at what we're doing. We're fasting throughout the
day, it's a time of tranquility and peace
and you're contemplating,
you're reflecting on your life. You don't have
time for music, you don't have time for
any of that, it's just you and Allah
Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala.
And then the second thing to think about
somebody once asked the question
when you pass away what song would you
like to be the last and final song
you listen to?
And the listener when he was asked this
question he couldn't answer it. Why?
Because the whole idea, the heart immediately
responded to him and he was reminded,
wait a minute, I don't want a song
to be the last thing I listen to
before I pass away.
And that was one way to prove that
there's something
not right about music in general.
Because if you hesitate to answer that and
you stop and you think wait a minute
that's not how I want to leave this
world. That's your first clue that this connection
with music in general
needs to be repaired. It needs to be
addressed, and it needs to be replaced with
something
that is more beloved and brings us closer
to our creator.
That's the goal brothers and sisters.
Whatever it is that you listen to,
especially when it comes to the Quran,
You want whatever you're listening to to bring
you closer to Allah.
And the last and the final point that
I'll say with respect to music is
music has a way of penetrating the heart.
It has a way of influencing your emotions.
If you listen to something sad, then there's
a good chance you're going to feel sad.
If you listen to something happy you'll feel
the same way. The fact that music can
have that level of control and influence on
you
is immediately something to think about. Do you
want to depend
on your emotions and feelings
to be connected to what song or music
you listen to
and then meet Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala in
that state,
something to really
think about. This is why I personally believe
that music is something our Prophet alayhis salatu
wasalam
would not approve of.
So think about it, especially in this month
of Ramadan.
There are many of us and I see
the post online all the time that many
of us will take a step back, we're
not going to listen to this, we're not
going to play this for the entire month.
Why would you do that?
Because if you're doing it throughout the rest
of the year why not this month? It's
because your heart realizes that there's something uncomfortable,
there's something not right about this experience and
that's why
many of us would put it on pause
for the month of Ramadan.
We know and we realize that this is
something we need to push aside and ultimately
get it out of our lives for good
Insha'Allah.
Replace it with your remembrance,
replace it with the Quran, and replace it
with a connection with Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala.
You do that you will never
have any desire for music again. May Allah
Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala make it easy for you.
