			Psalm, chapter, 119

00:01:20 --> 00:01:21
			verses, nine through 16.

00:01:23 --> 00:01:27
			How can a young person stay on the
path of purity by living according

00:01:27 --> 00:01:32
			to your word? I seek you with all
of my heart. Do not let me stray

00:01:32 --> 00:01:36
			from your commands. I have hidden
your word in my heart that I might

00:01:36 --> 00:01:41
			not sin against you. Praise be to
you. Lord. Teach me your decrees

00:01:41 --> 00:01:45
			with my lips. I recount all the
laws that come from your mouth. I

00:01:45 --> 00:01:50
			rejoice in following Your statutes
as one rejoices in great riches. I

00:01:50 --> 00:01:54
			meditate on your precepts and
consider your ways. I delight in

00:01:54 --> 00:01:58
			your decrees. I will not neglect
your word.

00:01:59 --> 00:01:59
			Let's pray

00:02:02 --> 00:02:05
			Heavenly Father, thank you so much
for this morning. Thank You that

00:02:05 --> 00:02:08
			we have this technology and that
even though we are a part

00:02:08 --> 00:02:13
			physically, we can be united in
spirit, in truth. Thank you, Lord,

00:02:13 --> 00:02:20
			that we have this unity, that we
have this technology, that we have

00:02:20 --> 00:02:24
			the ability to still put your word
out, to stay in touch with one

00:02:24 --> 00:02:28
			another, and to have a semblance
of fellowship. And God, I pray

00:02:28 --> 00:02:31
			that you would be with Lance this
morning as he brings your word. I

00:02:31 --> 00:02:35
			pray that You would give him the
words to speak, that you would

00:02:35 --> 00:02:38
			give him clarity of speech, that
he would stay true to your word,

00:02:38 --> 00:02:42
			and that hearts would be prepared
for the message that you've given

00:02:42 --> 00:02:46
			him, Lord, that your word would go
out, that your spirit would work,

00:02:46 --> 00:02:48
			that encouragement and challenge,

00:02:49 --> 00:02:53
			conviction, hope, all of these
things that come from your word

00:02:53 --> 00:02:56
			would be brought into the hearts
and the lives of your people this

00:02:56 --> 00:02:59
			morning. Thank you for the work of
your word and your spirit. I pray

00:02:59 --> 00:03:03
			you be with us the rest of today
and bless this wonderful time as

00:03:03 --> 00:03:08
			we focus particularly on mothers.
Thank you for them. Thank you for

00:03:08 --> 00:03:11
			their love and their diligence and
their care. I pray that You would

00:03:12 --> 00:03:13
			bless the mothers today,

00:03:14 --> 00:03:19
			give them an extra measure of
grace, of joy and of hope. We pray

00:03:19 --> 00:03:22
			this in the precious and holy name
of Jesus Christ, amen.

00:03:27 --> 00:03:30
			Hello and thanks for joining us,
joining us on Houston. Baptist

00:03:30 --> 00:03:35
			online, Happy Mother's Day to all
mothers as we honor and celebrate

00:03:35 --> 00:03:40
			you today, I believe that at no
time in recent history has the

00:03:40 --> 00:03:45
			role of a mother being more
important. The covid 19 pandemic

00:03:45 --> 00:03:50
			that has caused global confusion,
shutdown of schools, daycares and

00:03:50 --> 00:03:55
			large sectors of our economy has
resulted in most children being at

00:03:55 --> 00:03:59
			home with one parent or both
parents, for the most part, unable

00:03:59 --> 00:04:00
			to leave their homes.

00:04:01 --> 00:04:04
			Parents are filling in as part
time teachers and helping their

00:04:04 --> 00:04:08
			kids complete their school year.
Many parents are spending way more

00:04:08 --> 00:04:10
			time with their kids than they're
used to.

00:04:11 --> 00:04:15
			I've seen from personal experience
and on social media, a number of

00:04:15 --> 00:04:19
			different reactions from parents.
Some parents are loving the extra

00:04:19 --> 00:04:22
			time with their kids, but hating
to hating having to be the

00:04:22 --> 00:04:27
			teacher, they often feel under
qualified and consequently

00:04:27 --> 00:04:28
			overwhelmed.

00:04:29 --> 00:04:32
			One mother I saw on social media
said she was almost ready to kill

00:04:32 --> 00:04:36
			all of her children, and that was
like a week after school shut

00:04:36 --> 00:04:36
			down.

00:04:38 --> 00:04:40
			Other parents I've seen are
embracing the situation,

00:04:41 --> 00:04:45
			teaching the kids their school
curriculum and then engaging in

00:04:45 --> 00:04:49
			their lives for play time, work
time and real world learning time.

00:04:50 --> 00:04:54
			In light of this, I wanted to take
some time on this Mother's Day to

00:04:54 --> 00:04:57
			look at what the Bible says about
the role of mothers in their

00:04:57 --> 00:04:59
			families. But first, let.

00:05:00 --> 00:05:01
			Start with a word of prayer,

00:05:02 --> 00:05:06
			Father, we praise You. We praise
you because of your unending love

00:05:06 --> 00:05:10
			for us, even when we disappoint
you with our sin filled lives. We

00:05:10 --> 00:05:14
			praise you because your Son, Jesus
gave up his heavenly dwelling to

00:05:14 --> 00:05:18
			come to earth as a baby, to grow
up and live a sinless life, to go

00:05:18 --> 00:05:21
			to the cross, to die a horrific
death, to take away our sins and

00:05:21 --> 00:05:24
			then to be resurrected and ascend
to heaven, to sit at your right

00:05:24 --> 00:05:29
			hand as our intercessor. And
today, Father, we specifically

00:05:29 --> 00:05:32
			praise you for mothers. Thank you
for the precious gift of mothers

00:05:32 --> 00:05:37
			who love us, nurture us and teach
us your ways. And Father, I just

00:05:37 --> 00:05:40
			ask for a special blessing on
Mothers these today,

00:05:41 --> 00:05:45
			Father, let the words I speak
today be your words. Remove from

00:05:45 --> 00:05:49
			me any sense of this message being
from me, and use it for your glory

00:05:49 --> 00:05:51
			and your kingdom. Amen,

00:05:53 --> 00:05:57
			a preacher from Florida by the
name of Davin Haas tells this

00:05:57 --> 00:06:02
			story some years ago, on a hot
summer day in South Florida, a

00:06:02 --> 00:06:05
			young boy decided to go for a swim
in the old swimming hole behind

00:06:05 --> 00:06:10
			his house. In a hurry to dive into
the cool water, he ran out the

00:06:10 --> 00:06:14
			back door, leaving behind shoes,
socks and shirt as he went,

00:06:15 --> 00:06:19
			he dived into the water, not
realizing as he swam toward the

00:06:19 --> 00:06:23
			middle of the lake that an
alligator was swimming toward the

00:06:23 --> 00:06:23
			shore.

00:06:25 --> 00:06:29
			His mother was in the house. As
she looked out the window, she saw

00:06:29 --> 00:06:31
			the two getting closer and closer
together.

00:06:32 --> 00:06:37
			In sheer panic, she ran toward the
water, yelling to her son as

00:06:37 --> 00:06:38
			loudly as she could,

00:06:40 --> 00:06:43
			hearing her voice, the little boy
became alarmed and made a U turn

00:06:43 --> 00:06:44
			to swim to his mother.

00:06:45 --> 00:06:46
			It was too late.

00:06:47 --> 00:06:50
			Just as he reached her, the
alligator reached him

00:06:52 --> 00:06:55
			from the dock. The mother grabbed
her little boy by the arms, just

00:06:55 --> 00:06:57
			as the alligator snatched his
legs,

00:06:58 --> 00:07:01
			what followed next was an
incredible tug of war between an

00:07:01 --> 00:07:04
			alligator that thought he had
gotten a hold of an easy lunch,

00:07:05 --> 00:07:09
			and a desperate, terrified mother
with an overflowing tank of love

00:07:09 --> 00:07:10
			spiked with adrenaline.

00:07:13 --> 00:07:16
			The alligator was way stronger
than the mother, but the mother

00:07:16 --> 00:07:18
			was much too passionate to let go.
There

00:07:20 --> 00:07:25
			was a farmer that happened to be
driving by. He heard her screams,

00:07:25 --> 00:07:29
			grabbed his gun from the back
window of his truck and raced to

00:07:29 --> 00:07:29
			the scene.

00:07:30 --> 00:07:33
			He took careful aim and shot the
alligator and killed it.

00:07:36 --> 00:07:40
			Remarkably, after many weeks in
the hospital, the little boy

00:07:40 --> 00:07:44
			survived. His legs were extremely
scarred by the vicious attack of

00:07:44 --> 00:07:49
			the animal, and on his arms were
deep scars left behind where his

00:07:49 --> 00:07:52
			mother's fingernails dug into his
flesh in her effort to hang on to

00:07:52 --> 00:07:53
			the son she loved.

00:07:55 --> 00:07:59
			As we look through the Bible, we
see that mothers, and I'm speaking

00:07:59 --> 00:08:03
			today specifically of the role of
mothers have a number of important

00:08:03 --> 00:08:06
			roles to play in the upbringing of
their children.

00:08:08 --> 00:08:11
			One thing we see is that mothers
love their children. Seems pretty

00:08:11 --> 00:08:14
			obvious, doesn't it? This love is
sacrificial. Though it's it's

00:08:14 --> 00:08:17
			unconditional, and this love is
unending.

00:08:19 --> 00:08:21
			In isaiah 4915 we read,

00:08:23 --> 00:08:26
			Can a mother forget the baby at
her breast and have no compassion

00:08:26 --> 00:08:28
			on the child she has born?

00:08:29 --> 00:08:33
			Let me take you to a story that
illustrates this point. In First

00:08:33 --> 00:08:36
			Kings, chapter three, we read
about two prostitutes from the

00:08:36 --> 00:08:39
			same house who gave birth within a
few days of each other.

00:08:40 --> 00:08:43
			One of the women rolled over on
her baby and killed it.

00:08:44 --> 00:08:48
			She then switched her baby's body
for the other woman's child. The

00:08:48 --> 00:08:52
			other woman, as I think we would
expect from a mother, recognized

00:08:52 --> 00:08:55
			the switch and sought justice
before the king of that day.

00:08:57 --> 00:09:00
			As a matter of fact, this is the
first ruling we see in the Bible

00:09:00 --> 00:09:03
			from King Solomon. We pick up the
story in verse 23

00:09:07 --> 00:09:11
			the king said, This one says, My
son is alive and your son is dead,

00:09:11 --> 00:09:14
			while that one says, No, your son
is dead and mine is alive.

00:09:16 --> 00:09:18
			Then the king said, Bring me a
sword.

00:09:19 --> 00:09:22
			So they brought a sword for the
king. He then gave an order,

00:09:23 --> 00:09:27
			cut the living child in two and
give half to one and half to the

00:09:27 --> 00:09:27
			other.

00:09:28 --> 00:09:32
			The woman whose son was alive, was
deeply moved out of love for her

00:09:32 --> 00:09:36
			son, and said to the king, Please,
my lord, give her the living baby.

00:09:36 --> 00:09:37
			Don't kill him.

00:09:38 --> 00:09:42
			But the other said, Neither I nor
you shall have him. Cut him in

00:09:42 --> 00:09:42
			two.

00:09:43 --> 00:09:45
			Then the king gave his ruling.

00:09:47 --> 00:09:51
			Give the living baby to the first
woman. Do not kill him. She is his

00:09:51 --> 00:09:51
			mother.

00:09:54 --> 00:09:58
			What we see from this story is a
mother's love is sacrificial and

00:09:58 --> 00:09:59
			unconditional.

00:10:00 --> 00:10:03
			Her the first mother was prepared
to give up her son in order to see

00:10:03 --> 00:10:06
			him live and perhaps get a chance
to see him later.

00:10:08 --> 00:10:10
			There's another example of
unconditional and unending love

00:10:10 --> 00:10:12
			I'd like to take a look at

00:10:13 --> 00:10:16
			in John 19 at the cross, where
Jesus would die.

00:10:17 --> 00:10:20
			Who do we know of Jesus' disciples
and family that were there, for

00:10:20 --> 00:10:21
			sure.

00:10:23 --> 00:10:26
			One of his family that we know was
there was his mother, Mary

00:10:27 --> 00:10:30
			John 1925 reads

00:10:32 --> 00:10:37
			near the Cross of Jesus stood his
mother, his mother's sister, Mary,

00:10:37 --> 00:10:39
			the wife of clopas and Mary
Magdalene. I think

00:10:41 --> 00:10:45
			there's a lot of significance in
Mary being at the cross. If we

00:10:45 --> 00:10:48
			look at Mark three, we find a
story about Jesus' mother and

00:10:48 --> 00:10:49
			brothers coming to visit him

00:10:51 --> 00:10:54
			when told in verse 32 that they
were outside looking for him,

00:10:55 --> 00:10:58
			Jesus asked the group with him,
who are my brother, my mother and

00:10:58 --> 00:10:59
			my brothers?

00:11:01 --> 00:11:05
			How would that feel to you? Moms
to be publicly disowned by your

00:11:05 --> 00:11:05
			son,

00:11:07 --> 00:11:14
			and yet here she is at the Cross
showing unending and unconditional

00:11:14 --> 00:11:14
			love.

00:11:18 --> 00:11:21
			A second thing we see in the Bible
is that mothers comfort and care

00:11:21 --> 00:11:22
			for their children.

00:11:23 --> 00:11:28
			In Isaiah, 66 verse 13, we read as
a mother comforts her child, so

00:11:28 --> 00:11:29
			will I comfort you?

00:11:31 --> 00:11:33
			This verse of prophecy is
comparing a mother's love for her

00:11:33 --> 00:11:37
			child to God's enduring love for
His people.

00:11:38 --> 00:11:41
			We see an example of a caring
mother in the book of Ruth,

00:11:43 --> 00:11:47
			the Cole's Notes version on this
little book go like this. It

00:11:47 --> 00:11:50
			documents the life of Naomi as she
and her husband and two sons flee

00:11:50 --> 00:11:53
			famine in Judah. Her two sons
marrying the new country they

00:11:53 --> 00:11:57
			settle in. Then she loses her
husband, then her two sons. When

00:11:57 --> 00:12:00
			she hears that life is back to
normal in her hometown of

00:12:00 --> 00:12:04
			Bethlehem. She heads back with her
daughter in law, Ruth in tow. When

00:12:04 --> 00:12:07
			they return home, Ruth works hard
and impresses a rich guy by the

00:12:07 --> 00:12:12
			name of Boaz, who marries her, and
they have a son together that

00:12:12 --> 00:12:16
			coincidentally is this king. Is
the grandfather of King David.

00:12:18 --> 00:12:21
			As we go through this story, we
see in Naomi a mother who loved

00:12:21 --> 00:12:24
			her sons and her daughter in laws,
who cared for them throughout the

00:12:24 --> 00:12:28
			story, then right near the end of
the book, in chapter four, verse

00:12:28 --> 00:12:34
			13, as she's introduced to her
grandson, says, Then Naomi took

00:12:34 --> 00:12:37
			the child, laid him in her lap,
and cared for him,

00:12:38 --> 00:12:42
			just a God given natural response
to care for her grandson

00:12:44 --> 00:12:47
			in First Thessalonians two, Paul
is talking about his time in

00:12:47 --> 00:12:51
			Thessalonica, where he's
Thessalonica, where he says he and

00:12:51 --> 00:12:53
			the apostles with him could have
been a burden to the

00:12:53 --> 00:12:57
			Thessalonians, but instead, he
says in verse seven, but we were

00:12:57 --> 00:13:00
			gentle among you, like A mother
caring for her children.

00:13:01 --> 00:13:05
			Mothers love their children.
Mothers comfort and care for their

00:13:05 --> 00:13:05
			children.

00:13:08 --> 00:13:11
			A third thing we find in the Bible
is that mothers protect their

00:13:11 --> 00:13:11
			children.

00:13:13 --> 00:13:17
			We saw this in the story I told at
the beginning of this message and

00:13:17 --> 00:13:19
			in Exodus chapter two, we find
another story of a mother

00:13:19 --> 00:13:20
			protecting her child.

00:13:22 --> 00:13:25
			Chapter One of Exodus tells of the
Israelites who had immigrated to

00:13:25 --> 00:13:27
			Egypt on the invitation of the
pharaoh at the time of Joseph,

00:13:28 --> 00:13:32
			becoming so numerous in their
adopted country that another

00:13:32 --> 00:13:37
			Pharaoh became intimidated by them
and took measures to control their

00:13:37 --> 00:13:41
			population by killing all the male
children born to the Israelites,

00:13:42 --> 00:13:44
			we pick up the story in chapter
two, verse one.

00:13:46 --> 00:13:49
			Now, a man of the tribe of Levi
married a Levite woman, and she

00:13:49 --> 00:13:53
			became pregnant and gave birth to
a son. When she saw that he was a

00:13:53 --> 00:13:57
			fine child, she hid him for three
months, but when she could find

00:13:57 --> 00:14:01
			him no longer, she got a papyrus
basket for him and coated it with

00:14:01 --> 00:14:05
			tar and pitch. Then she placed the
child in it and put it among the

00:14:05 --> 00:14:07
			reeds along the bank of the Nile.

00:14:08 --> 00:14:12
			And the rest of the story tells us
this child was found by Pharaoh's

00:14:12 --> 00:14:16
			daughter, adopted into Pharaoh's
household, and many years and much

00:14:16 --> 00:14:20
			trouble later, God would raise the
man Moses up as the man to lead

00:14:20 --> 00:14:24
			the Israelites out of slavery and
into their own land.

00:14:25 --> 00:14:30
			Interestingly enough, in a book
written 1500 years or so later,

00:14:30 --> 00:14:34
			when you get to what is sometimes
called the Bible Hall of Fame in

00:14:34 --> 00:14:39
			Hebrews 11, you find Moses listed
as you would expect, but you also

00:14:39 --> 00:14:40
			find this in verse 23

00:14:41 --> 00:14:45
			by faith, Moses' parents hid him
for three months after he was born

00:14:46 --> 00:14:49
			because they saw he was no
ordinary child and they were not

00:14:49 --> 00:14:51
			afraid of the king's edict.

00:14:53 --> 00:14:57
			Moses' mother was willing to defy
the law of the land and the wrath

00:14:57 --> 00:14:59
			of Pharaoh to protect her son.

00:15:00 --> 00:15:01
			From being killed.

00:15:03 --> 00:15:06
			Mothers love their children,
mothers comfort and care for their

00:15:06 --> 00:15:09
			children. Mothers protect their
children.

00:15:10 --> 00:15:13
			And a fourth thing The Bible
teaches us is that mothers, along

00:15:13 --> 00:15:17
			with fathers, educate their
children. Jared read part of Psalm

00:15:17 --> 00:15:21
			119 earlier that tells us how a
young man or a young woman can

00:15:21 --> 00:15:26
			keep their way pure. Mothers and
fathers have an important role in

00:15:26 --> 00:15:29
			teaching their children the
concepts The psalmist is talking

00:15:29 --> 00:15:29
			about,

00:15:31 --> 00:15:35
			Proverbs. One eight tells us,
listen my son to your father's

00:15:35 --> 00:15:38
			instruction and do not forsake
your mother's teaching.

00:15:40 --> 00:15:45
			Proverbs. 31 one reads the sayings
of King Lemuel, an Oracle. His

00:15:45 --> 00:15:46
			mother taught him

00:15:51 --> 00:15:52
			proverbs. 3126

00:15:53 --> 00:15:57
			talking about the wife of noble
character, says she speaks with

00:15:57 --> 00:16:00
			wisdom and faithful instruction is
on her tongue.

00:16:01 --> 00:16:05
			Last week, Pastor Jared spoke
about his wife April, memorizing

00:16:05 --> 00:16:07
			Scripture and memorizing the
children's catechism in

00:16:07 --> 00:16:12
			preparation for educating their
twins. I love to hear that my

00:16:12 --> 00:16:15
			wife, Shirley and I got off to a
late start, as we were not

00:16:15 --> 00:16:19
			believers until after we were
parents, but even now, Shirley

00:16:19 --> 00:16:23
			continues to learn and memorize
Scripture and how to apply it as

00:16:23 --> 00:16:26
			she speaks into the lives of our
grown children our grandchildren.

00:16:27 --> 00:16:30
			It is great to see a young couple
like Jared and April working

00:16:30 --> 00:16:32
			together, preparing to educate
their children.

00:16:33 --> 00:16:34
			But

00:16:35 --> 00:16:40
			what if you're a single parent, or
what if you're a believer and your

00:16:40 --> 00:16:41
			spouse is not.

00:16:42 --> 00:16:46
			Life isn't always cut and dried,
and yet the Bible shows how one of

00:16:46 --> 00:16:49
			Paul's most trusted lieutenants
was educated by his mother and

00:16:49 --> 00:16:53
			grandmother. In Paul's second
lieutenant letter to this

00:16:53 --> 00:16:57
			lieutenant, Timothy, we read in
chapter one, verse five, I have

00:16:57 --> 00:17:01
			been reminded of your sincere
faith which first lived in your

00:17:01 --> 00:17:04
			grandmother, Lois and in your
mother, Eunice, and I am persuaded

00:17:04 --> 00:17:05
			now lives in you also

00:17:07 --> 00:17:12
			jumping ahead to chapter three,
verse 15, Paul tells Timothy how

00:17:12 --> 00:17:16
			from infa infancy, you have known
the Holy Scriptures which are able

00:17:16 --> 00:17:20
			to make you wise for salvation
through faith in Christ, Jesus.

00:17:22 --> 00:17:25
			These verses teach us that in the
absence of a father, mothers will

00:17:25 --> 00:17:29
			still do their best to educate
their children. In today's

00:17:29 --> 00:17:33
			society, we drift further as we
drift further and further into the

00:17:33 --> 00:17:36
			post Christian Era, I believe it
is becoming ever more important

00:17:37 --> 00:17:40
			for parents to provide spiritual
education to their children.

00:17:41 --> 00:17:43
			Proverbs 22 six tells us,

00:17:44 --> 00:17:48
			tells us to start children off on
the way they should go, and even

00:17:48 --> 00:17:51
			when they are old, they will not
turn from it. And I believe that

00:17:51 --> 00:17:56
			this is the desire of every godly
mother's heart. This time of

00:17:56 --> 00:17:57
			staying at home,

00:17:58 --> 00:18:02
			of isolation with our families,
has provided an opportunity to hit

00:18:02 --> 00:18:06
			pause in our busy lives, to spend
large amounts of time with our

00:18:06 --> 00:18:10
			families, and I hope, to reflect
on what is really important to not

00:18:10 --> 00:18:14
			only us, but the generation of
kids who are currently in school,

00:18:15 --> 00:18:20
			an opportunity for them to see
life, to see their parents, even

00:18:20 --> 00:18:26
			to see society in a different
perspective. Mothers, have you

00:18:26 --> 00:18:29
			taken this opportunity to show
your children how much you love

00:18:29 --> 00:18:29
			them?

00:18:30 --> 00:18:34
			Have you spent time comforting and
caring for them? You are

00:18:34 --> 00:18:38
			protecting them by keeping them
home, but are you also protecting

00:18:38 --> 00:18:41
			them from the ungodly influences
that sneak in over the airwaves

00:18:42 --> 00:18:45
			and on cables that connect our
homes to the world. And mothers

00:18:45 --> 00:18:49
			are you spending time educating
your children, not just tutoring

00:18:49 --> 00:18:52
			them for assigned lessons from
their schools, but educating them

00:18:52 --> 00:18:56
			in the knowledge of the Bible and
how to really dig into it,

00:18:57 --> 00:18:58
			knowledge of God and their Savior?

00:19:00 --> 00:19:04
			So today, we're celebrating
mothers. It's a special day, and

00:19:04 --> 00:19:07
			we'll give them flowers, candies
and cards, take them out for

00:19:07 --> 00:19:12
			meals, or rather, this year, we'll
order takeout in and give them

00:19:12 --> 00:19:13
			other gifts.

00:19:14 --> 00:19:16
			But what can children do to honor
their mothers year round?

00:19:18 --> 00:19:21
			If you've been in church long,
you'll be familiar with the 10

00:19:21 --> 00:19:25
			Commandments in Exodus. 20, verse
12 reads, Honor your father and

00:19:25 --> 00:19:28
			your mother so that you may live
long in the promised in the land

00:19:28 --> 00:19:31
			the Lord, your God, is giving you
the promised land.

00:19:32 --> 00:19:35
			Paul reinforces and expands this a
little bit, as he writes in

00:19:35 --> 00:19:40
			Ephesians. Six, at verses one to
three, children obey your parents

00:19:40 --> 00:19:44
			in the Lord, for this is right
Honor your father and mother,

00:19:45 --> 00:19:48
			which is the first commandment,
with a promise that it may go well

00:19:48 --> 00:19:51
			with you and that you may enjoy
long life on the Earth.

00:19:53 --> 00:19:57
			John MacArthur writes on the
difference between honor and obey.

00:19:58 --> 00:19:59
			He says that obey has.

00:20:00 --> 00:20:06
			To do with action, with action and
honor has to do with attitude. The

00:20:06 --> 00:20:10
			word honor means to value highly,
to hold in the highest regard and

00:20:10 --> 00:20:11
			respect.

00:20:12 --> 00:20:15
			Which leads to MacArthur's
statement next that the right

00:20:15 --> 00:20:19
			attitude behind the right act of
obedience is honor.

00:20:20 --> 00:20:24
			The Bible is pretty clear that
children living under the roof of

00:20:24 --> 00:20:27
			their parents are to obey them
because it is the right thing to

00:20:27 --> 00:20:32
			do, according to God Colossians
320 reads, children obey your

00:20:32 --> 00:20:35
			parents in everything for this
pleases the Lord.

00:20:38 --> 00:20:42
			So children honor their mothers by
obeying them. But in order to obey

00:20:42 --> 00:20:45
			their mothers, they must first
listen to them. Proverbs, one,

00:20:45 --> 00:20:50
			eight reads, listen my son to your
father's instruction and do not

00:20:50 --> 00:20:51
			forsake your mother's teaching.

00:20:52 --> 00:20:54
			This is repeated in Proverbs. 620,

00:20:55 --> 00:20:59
			my son, keep your father's
commands and do not forsake your

00:20:59 --> 00:20:59
			mother's teaching.

00:21:02 --> 00:21:06
			So the steps to honor our mothers
are pretty simple, listen to them

00:21:07 --> 00:21:12
			and obey them. Did you get that
kids listen and obey? If you can

00:21:12 --> 00:21:16
			get those two simple steps
straight, you can truly honor your

00:21:16 --> 00:21:19
			mother year round, year in and
year out. And

00:21:21 --> 00:21:25
			now something that mothers do for
their children, and that all

00:21:25 --> 00:21:29
			children, and I think particularly
grown children now, can do, and

00:21:29 --> 00:21:33
			that is mothers pray for their
children, and children should be

00:21:33 --> 00:21:36
			praying for their mothers. We're
instructed in Ephesians 618,

00:21:38 --> 00:21:41
			to pray in the Spirit on all
occasions with all kinds of

00:21:41 --> 00:21:42
			prayers and requests.

00:21:43 --> 00:21:49
			Moms, you are the intercessor
between your child and God until

00:21:49 --> 00:21:51
			they're able to meet God
themselves.

00:21:54 --> 00:21:57
			You know, several weeks after the
alligator incident that I talked

00:21:57 --> 00:22:01
			about earlier, after the boy had
been released from the hospital, a

00:22:01 --> 00:22:04
			television reporter was
interviewing him and asked the boy

00:22:04 --> 00:22:08
			if he would show him his scars.
The boy lifted his pant legs and

00:22:08 --> 00:22:11
			showed the horrific scars left by
the alligators teeth

00:22:12 --> 00:22:15
			and then holding up his arms,
scarred by his mother's

00:22:15 --> 00:22:17
			fingernails and she clung to them
while the alligator thrashed in

00:22:17 --> 00:22:20
			the water, the little boy, with
obvious pride, said to the

00:22:20 --> 00:22:24
			reporter, but look at my arms. I
have great scars on my arms too. I

00:22:24 --> 00:22:27
			have them because my mom wouldn't
let go.

00:22:28 --> 00:22:32
			Most of us have scars too, don't
we? Some of us have scars from a

00:22:32 --> 00:22:36
			battlefield, from a workplace
injury, maybe from a recreational

00:22:36 --> 00:22:41
			event that went sideways, lots of
other kinds of accidents that can

00:22:41 --> 00:22:42
			cause physical scars.

00:22:43 --> 00:22:46
			On the other hand, maybe we don't
have physical scars, but we have

00:22:46 --> 00:22:51
			emotional or psychological scars
that are even more debilitating

00:22:51 --> 00:22:52
			than the physical ones.

00:22:53 --> 00:22:57
			But just like the young boy in the
alligator illustration, those

00:22:57 --> 00:23:01
			scars tell a story. They tell the
world we survived

00:23:02 --> 00:23:06
			that young boy had an intercessor,
a mother who would give, have

00:23:06 --> 00:23:09
			given her life to save her little
boy. And we too have an

00:23:09 --> 00:23:13
			intercessor in the form of Jesus
Christ, who came to earth to live

00:23:13 --> 00:23:17
			as a human and die a horrific
death nailed by his hands and feet

00:23:17 --> 00:23:22
			to a cross, an intercessor who did
give his life in order to save us.

00:23:22 --> 00:23:26
			We've survived because Jesus
Christ would not let go of us. And

00:23:26 --> 00:23:29
			we can be sure, if we have trusted
Jesus Christ as our Lord and

00:23:29 --> 00:23:32
			Savior, that he will never let go
of us.

00:23:34 --> 00:23:38
			The marks on our bodies, souls and
minds are temporary in light of

00:23:38 --> 00:23:41
			eternity, as Paul put it in
second, Corinthians, 417,

00:23:43 --> 00:23:46
			our light and momentary troubles
are achieving for us an eternal

00:23:46 --> 00:23:47
			glory that far outweighs them all.

00:23:49 --> 00:23:52
			If you don't have that assurance
in your life today, if you haven't

00:23:52 --> 00:23:55
			received Jesus Christ as your Lord
and Savior, as your intercessor

00:23:55 --> 00:23:59
			intercessor, then I would love to
see you place your hand in the

00:23:59 --> 00:24:03
			nail scarred hand of Jesus. If you
want to know more, any of our

00:24:03 --> 00:24:07
			pastors or elders would love to
have a chat with you. You can find

00:24:07 --> 00:24:11
			our contact info at www dot,
Houston baptist.ca/contacts.

00:24:15 --> 00:24:21
			So moms again. Happy Mother's Day
and children, let's not just honor

00:24:21 --> 00:24:24
			moms today, the love they have,
the things they do all year long.

00:24:24 --> 00:24:29
			Should want to make you honor your
mom every day. Let's pray

00:24:30 --> 00:24:34
			heavenly father, just thank you
again for this opportunity to come

00:24:34 --> 00:24:38
			to worship you. Thank you for the
technology we have that allows us

00:24:38 --> 00:24:42
			to get this message out to our
people. Father, we just pray for

00:24:42 --> 00:24:46
			mothers today. Pray that you would
just bless mothers, that you would

00:24:47 --> 00:24:51
			encourage the hearts of children
to honor their mothers well today,

00:24:51 --> 00:24:54
			but not just today. Father, that
they would honor their mothers

00:24:54 --> 00:24:59
			every day. And And Father, we just
pray that, yeah.

00:25:00 --> 00:25:03
			You would be involved in our lives
every day, and we ask it in Jesus

00:25:03 --> 00:25:04
			name. Amen.

00:25:05 --> 00:25:08
			I want to leave you today with
Paul's prayer to the Philippian

00:25:08 --> 00:25:10
			church in Philippians one, nine to
11.

00:25:12 --> 00:25:15
			And this is my prayer that your
love may abound more and more in

00:25:15 --> 00:25:18
			knowledge and depth of insight, so
that you may be able to discern

00:25:18 --> 00:25:21
			what is best and may be pure and
blameless until the day of Jesus

00:25:21 --> 00:25:25
			Christ, filled with the fruit of
righteousness that comes through

00:25:25 --> 00:25:27
			Jesus Christ to the glory and
praise of God.

00:25:29 --> 00:25:31
			Have a great Mother's Day and a
really good week. You
