Which is in Surah Al Nisa at 5th
Juz.
In the previous episode, we spoke about the
commands of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala
and some of those important commands included
how a person who obeys Allah and His
Messenger Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam must have their obedience
internally and externally in the heart as well
as
upon their actions.
And also from the principles that Allah gave
us in this verse, in that particular
passage,
The Quran is a very important part
of our study of the book of Allah
subhanahu wa ta'ala and from the principles that
Allah gave to us that we mentioned in
the previous episode
is the importance of returning affairs to the
people of knowledge When there is an issue
that you don't understand or it seems like
it is a new issue or it is
an issue which is confusing, has doubt within
it, take it back to the people of
knowledge and Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala says they
will extract for you from the knowledge that
Allah has afforded them with, they will extract
for you what is the correct way of
dealing with that particular issue.
Today Insha'Allah we begin from verse number 88
and these are verses that allahujan this particular
passage today this page or the verses that
we will cover today
are verses that primarily will refer to the
hypocrites the
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala says in verse number
88 of Surah Al Nisa,
Allah
says why are you divided in 2 about
the hypocrites
when Allah himself
has rejected them because of that which they
did?
Do you want to guide those whom Allah
has left astray?
If Allah leaves anyone to go astray, you
will never find a way for him.
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala
speaks about those people who are people of
hypocrisy
and they are people of hypocrisy
However, they are professing Islam. As we know,
that is the definition of a hypocrite. Someone
who internally
doesn't believe
is a disbeliever,
doesn't love Allah or his Messenger Sallallahu Alaihi
Wasallam and at will he professes to be
a Muslim.
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala is saying why have
you split into 2 groups?
Why are you 2 groups when it comes
to the disbelievers?
And,
an example of this and Allah knows
best but an example of this dividing into
2 and some of the scholars mentioned in
the tafsir of this verse is what happened
in the day of the battle of Uhud.
So on the day of Uhud, as we
know, the prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam came
out of Madinah to fight the Quraysh
and he came with approximately about a 1000
Muslims.
And then the prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam,
and we mentioned all of this in detail
in the tafsir Surah Al Imran
and those passages that spoke about the battle
of Wuhad and the lessons that we can
derive from it and the principles that we
can take. We know that before the battle
began,
approximately a third of the army
returns to Madinah under the leadership of Abdullah
ibn Ubayy ibn Sirul who was the leader
of the hypocrites. He goes back with essentially
almost or around a third of the army.
And amongst them were certain tribes of believers
that were about to be influenced by him
and by those people who were leaving leaving,
such as the people of or the tribe
of Banus Salima, as is mentioned in the
narration of Jabir radiAllahu an.
And and I think we it is something
which we mentioned when we were going through
the tafsir of Surah earlier Imran.
Either way, those people return back as we
know and then the day of warhead continues
and what happens in the battle, we've already
discussed in detail. At the end of the
battle, the companions then differed into these two
groups regarding what was to be done with
those people that had essentially left the army.
They had returned without fighting or without partaking.
What do we do with them now?
So one of those groups said that we
should
exile them or we should punish them in
some way at our time of need, at
a time of battle when we were being
attacked and we were being we were we
were facing our enemies. Those people left us
and they abandoned us. Another said, no, leave
them alone, they are believers because they are
professing Islam, they are Muslims, so therefore the
Muslims have rights and so on and therefore
there is nothing that we can do to
them or anything that we should do to
them. Allah is saying and
Allah has rejected them as a result of
what they have done. Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala
says,
those people who want to
give them leave or whatever, do you think
that you can guide them after Allah has
caused them to be misguided?
And indeed those who have been led astray
by Allah, no one can ever guide them.
You can never find for them a way
back to guidance and we know that the
prophet salallahu alaihi wasalam
in his dealings with those hypocrites would treat
them outwardly as Muslims even though he knew
what they contained in their hearts and he
knew their names and he knew that they
were in reality hypocrites. But he would treat
them with good
and he would treat them with a certain
level of also mercy and gentleness as we
know
in the story of Abdullah ibn Ubayy when
he dies, how the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam
gave him his own robe to be shrouded
in, how the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam prayed
over him and so on in the hope
that perhaps Allah would still have mercy upon
them. So Allah, the prophet salallahu alaihi wa
sallam would deal with them in that way
and apparently and he would leave their private
intentions. What is in their hearts to Allah
subhanahu wa ta'ala. Allah is already the same,
but when you know that someone is openly
a a hypocrite,
don't give to them that same level of
of of of honor.
And that is why the prophet sallallahu alaihi
wasallam was then told that he can't pray
over them again, that he shouldn't visit their
graves, that he shouldn't make du'a for them,
that he shouldn't seek forgiveness for them because
he knows their reality and he knows that
they died upon other than Islam and other
than the tuhid of Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala.
Allah ajawja then says in the next verse
verse number 89
concerning these people who turned away, who turned
back, who abandoned you, who are hypocrites.
They would really like you to reject faith
as they themselves have done to be like
them. So do not take them as allies
until they migrate to Madinah for Allah's cause.
If they turn upon you then seize and
kill them whenever you encounter them, take none
of them as an ally or a supporter.
And so these are a people who are
hypocrites
and they profess Islam and they have also
refused to migrate to the city of Madinah
with the prophet
because they know or they fear that the
mushrik and the Quraysh will come and they
will attack them and possibly there will be
injuries and casualties and people may die and
so they prefer to stay away. The prophet
salallahu alaihi wasallam is saying concerning these people
of hypocrisy. He said what they would actually
like you to do is reject your religion
because they themselves won't believe and so they
also want you to be disbelievers as they
themselves have done so.
Allah says so don't make them your allies.
Don't take them as your helpers, don't rely
on them because you know they are reality,
you know that they don't believe and you
know that they will find ways and means
of trying to undermine you. And that is
essentially what happens as we know from the
life of the Prophet
So in the battle of Uhud as we
know a third of them more or less
returns back to Madina. They don't fight, they
don't partake on what takes place on that
day.
On the next battle, the Battle of the
Trench Hazab, when all of those confederal armies
come to attack Madina and the prophet salallahu
alaihi wasallam digs that trench across one side
of Madinah, it is the hypocrites who are
trying to collude with those confederal armies. They're
trying to find a way for them to
be able to come in, to attack, to
find a way of allowing them to overcome
the muslims.
And so these people, Allah says don't take
them as your oliya, Don't take them as
your helpers, as your as
your compatriots, as the people who ally themselves,
who you ally yourselves with because there are
people who don't believe in Allah and they
don't fight in the way of Allah aseawajal.
In fact, some of them don't even come
to Madia, they don't live there, they are
away from you until they are sincerely come
for the sake of Allah.
Until they migrate for Allah's cause meaning that
they have become believers then obviously they
you deal with them as believers.
Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala says, but
if they turn on you,
then seize and kill them whenever you encounter
them
and take none of them as an ally
or supporter meaning that if they don't become
your helpers and they shall open enmity towards
you and they become your enemies and they
fight you, then you fight them and defend
yourselves and you fight them
as they have fought you.
Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala then in the next
verse verse number 19 and the verse that
will follow after it, Allah
excludes 3 groups of the hypocrites from this
general ruling. So what is the general ruling
that we just established? Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala
is saying that these people are not your
helpers, they are not your allies. These are
people who you should fight because they are
enemies too, Especially when they refuse to help
you and ally yourselves, ally themselves with
you. And so these people now who are
living outside of Madinah, so these are not
the hypocrites of Medina. Now these are the
hypocrites that are living outside of Medina. They
profess Islam, but in Wuli they are disbelievers.
They don't ally themselves with you and they
don't fight you and they don't fight alongside
you.
If they turn against you, meaning they openly
show their enmity towards you, then you fight
them. However, if they don't now, they are
in this state now where they are not
fighting,
they are not allies and they are not
open enemies, what do we do? Allah subhanahu
wa ta'ala will tell us now in verse
number 19
and he divides them into 3 groups in
this verse and the next verse. Allah
says,
or who come over to you because their
hearts shrink from fighting against you or against
their own people, Allah could have given them
power over you and they could have fought
you. So if they withdraw and do not
fight and offer you peace, then Allah gives
you no way against them.
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala tells us about these
3 groups now in this verse, verse number
90, the first two of these 3 groups.
The first group are those people who are
living with Muslims
or with people that you have a pact
with, you have a peace treaty with. So
these are people who are but
they are living with people that you have
a peace treaty with, you have signed a
treaty with them, that you are allies, that
there will be no fighting against you as
the prophet did salallahu alaihi wasalam as we
know when he signed the treaty of Hademia.
He had other Arab tribes, not all of
them Muslims,
that also came alongside him and they were
part of that pact.
Those pacts that he had with those tribes,
even amongst them, if there are non Muslims
or there are, for example, hypocrites, then you
cannot fight them. That's the first group of
people. They are given an exclusion from that
general ruling of fighting. Why? Because they have
a peace treaty with you. That peace treaty
means obviously that they won't attack you as
well and you don't attack them, they won't
fight you, you won't fight them. That is
the first group of people that is exception
to the rule. The second group of people
are those people who just wanna stay away.
They don't wanna be involved. They don't wanna
take sides. They don't want to fight with
you. They don't want to fight against you.
They're not going to give any help to
your enemies, but they're not going to give
any help to you as well. And that
is because they have a certain level maybe
of respect for you or they have a
certain level of fear for you whatever it
may be they are people who will essentially
stay away. Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala says concerning
these people
that had Allah wished they could have fought
against you they could have been your enemies
These people now are hypocrites.
Those people are not gonna fight with you
because they don't believe in your religion.
That's the first scenario. They could have fought
with you, but they won't because they don't
believe in what you believe in. The other
two scenarios are that either they then fight
alongside your enemies,
which would be worse for you because now
they have more people fighting against you, or
they just simply stay away. These people have
chosen to stay away. That is why Allah
says that had Allah willed they could have
been your enemies. The fact that they have
chosen to stay away is a good outcome
for you. So that is why
Allah
says But if they choose to withdraw and
not to fight and give you peace meaning
they leave you alone,
then you have no authority over them. Meaning
don't go seeking them out, They're staying away,
so you stay away from them. This is
the best of outcomes concerning those people. So
look at these verses and how many details
that Allah goes to and one of the
things that it shows
as we can see here is how the
Muslim is someone who is
a person of intelligence.
A person who plans, a person who is
wise, a person who studies the affairs of
people. He isn't someone who's just reactionary. He's
not just someone who responds to the first
issue. That's not the way that the Muslim
behaves.
The Muslim is someone who is calm, who
is collected, who is measured, who is understanding
because they have studied the Quran and they
have studied the Sunnah and if someone who
truly studied the book of Allah a. S.
A. W. To study these verses That person
even though none of us are leaders, none
of us are generals, none of us are
soldiers, but you see the beauty of the
Sharia. You see how Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala
gave these commandments that even the average Muslim
can therefore appreciate the beauty of Islam. They
understand that the Muslim is someone who even
if you're not in this situation, you're not
fighting anyone, you don't even want to get
involved in these types of issues but when
it comes to disputes amongst your family, disputes
amongst your community, people have issues that or
you're hearing all of these different types of
views that are coming across you now. It
shows you the way that you should respond.
It may not be a like for example,
but it's giving you principles and of the
way that the Muslim should behave. And look
at the way that the prophet sallallahu alaihi
wasallam was someone who was calm and measured.
Even for example at the time of the
treaty of Hudaybiyyah.
What an amazing example of how those Quraysh
came and wanted to cite some type of
reaction because all of the Arabs were watching,
all of the Arabs were looking and observing
and had the Muslims put one foot wrong,
had the Muslims become reactionary, had the Muslims
done something towards the Quraysh, the Quraysh would
have had a justification to fight. They would
have a justification to go and to fight
those Muslims and to harm them. And all
of the Arabs would have taken their sides
because the Muslims were the ones who started
the trouble. The prophet salallahu alaihi wasallam calmed
his companions. He signed that treaty. He gave
away terms that were not favorable
to himself or to the Muslims. But he
did so knowing and trusting in Allah Subhanahu
Wa Ta'ala and knowing the religion of Allah
Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala
blessed that particular
treaty because the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi wa sallam's
generation says as he was returning home, Allah
gave to him the verses of the Quran
in Surah Al Fath. Inna Fathana Laka Fatham
Mubina we have given you a great victory.
And that is how the Muslim is. The
Muslim is someone who is always calm and
collected. Look at how here Allah azza wa
Jal is telling us to be smart, telling
the Muslims in the time of the Prophet
Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam these people are harming you.
They They don't have any issue to do
with you. They don't wanna get involved with
you or against you. So leave them be.
And that is the beauty of Islam. In
every single issue that you have and every
single problem that you're facing, you can find
within the Quran and the sunnah of the
prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam
guidelines and principles that will help you and
show you the way that you should be
in terms of your behavior. So these are
the first two groups that Allah has made
an exception for.
The first of them, the first group are
those people who you have a pact with,
you have signed a treaty with. They can't
attack you, you can't attack them. You are
on good terms. Leave those people alone. The
second group of people are those people who
themselves have chosen not to get involved.
They don't wanna be here for you. They
don't wanna be against you.
They could have taken sides and had they
taken sides, they would have taken sides against
you because they're hypocrites, they're not Muslims,
but they have chosen to stay away. And
because they have chosen to stay away, then
that is also a good outcome for you.
And so again therefore that is something which
you should leave while alone.
In verse number 91 which is the final
verse in today's episode Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala
then speaks about the 3rd group of people
and Allah says,
You will find others who wish to be
safe from you and from their own people.
But whenever they are back in a situation
where they are
tempted to fight, they succumb to it. So
if they neither withdraw nor offer you peace
nor restrain themselves from fighting you, seize and
kill them wherever you encounter them, we give
you clear authority against such people.
So this is now the 3rd group of
people and these are the people that are
always looking for what is most beneficial. Satedjidun
akharin, you will see another group of people
meaning from the hypocrites.
They wish to be safe from you because
they fear you, they have a fear of
you and they wish to be safe from
their own people. But there are people who
also look at what is going on and
where things are going to go, just like
the hypocrites of Madina in the time of
the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam those hypocrites in
Madina as Allah Azzawajal mentions in the Quran
that if they saw that there was an
easy fight, that there's some type of war
beauty to be gained, that they're going to
gain wealth, they'd be with you. But as
soon as things get hard or there's going
to be a difficult fight or they don't
think that the odds are looking so great
that the first ones to run away. They're
looking at the situation
and every time there's a fitna there is
a type of as Allah ahsawwala is saying
here that they are tempted to fight then
they won't succumb to it.
These are the people that Allah ahsawwala
is saying that if they don't leave you
alone, then you have permission to fight them
and if they leave you alone, then it
is better to leave them alone as well
And the difference between this one and the
previous group is that the second group genuinely
don't want to be involved.
They genuinely
want to leave you alone.
And so as some of the scholars of
tafsir said they have respect for the Muslims
they don't want to be involved they want
to leave them alone they don't want to
have any issues with the army of Muslims
or that group of Muslims and so they
leave them alone. The difference between that second
group and the third group is that the
third group is only leaving you alone because
it's in their best interest at the moment.
They're doing out of fear of you. But
as soon as that fear is lifted or
they see that the tide is turning or
they see that there's some benefit in them
to be enemies towards you, they will do
so. Allah is saying that these people, if
that is what they do, then you have
permission to fight them as well just as
the general permission was given at the beginning
of the verse, those are the people that
Allah gives you authority over. So therefore to
conclude in today's episode, Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala
gives the general instruction at the beginning of
this particular passage that it is permissible for
the Muslims to fight those hypocrites that are
enemies
to them that come out to harm them
that come out to do evil towards them.
They have, Allah gives permission to fight those
types of people and then Allah subhanahu wa
ta'ala excludes from that general permission
3 groups from amongst the hypocrites. 2 of
them
we are told to stay away from and
the third one we are told to look
at the circumstances
and what is taking place. The 2 that
we are told to always stay away from
is the first of those people that you
have a pact and a treaty with, stay
away from them because you signed an agreement
that you will not harm them. The second
are those group of people who don't want
to be involved. They genuinely want to leave
you alone and they don't want to harm
you and Allah Azzawajal is saying that it
is from the blessings of Allah upon you
that he made those people turn away from
you and not be interested in you, so
leave them alone because they don't want to
harm you so you don't harm them. And
the 3rd group of people as was mentioned
here in verse number 91 of Surat Al
Nisat are those people who will stay away
from you when it benefits them and they
will harm you when it benefits them. And
those are the people that you need to
be aware of. You need to constantly look
at the situation and see how it is
that they behave. These are the instructions that
are being given to the prophet Sallallahu Alaihi
Wasallam and the companions of the times of
the of the prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam when
obviously as we know hypocrisy was rife
during that time and so these are the
instructions that Allah gave and as we mentioned
before these verses
concerning jihad and fighting and so on have
to be understood in the correct context and
as we mentioned that principle in the previous
episode, the correct context is that you go
back to the scholars and the books of
the scholars and you study with them so
that you understand
the place where this is to be applied
and by whom it is to be applied.
And that is for the Muslim rulers to
do and for the people that are in
that position of authority. Not for me, not
for you, not for our communities, not for
our brothers and sisters generally to get involved
in these issues because that is not the
way that the Sharia works. And had that
been the case, then there were many opportunities
for the companions of the prophet sallallahu alaihi
wa sallam to take matters into their own
hands for each Muslim to go especially in
the early days of the Quraysh and Mecca.
Everyone could have gone and just killed this
non Muslim and that non Muslim and that
leader of Quraysh and that enemy of Islam.
All of them had the ability 1 to
1 to go and do something but they
didn't do so. They waited from instructions from
Allah and from his prophet sallallahu alaihi wa
sallam because there is a way and a
man in which this is done just like
in every country
that has an army and that has a
defense program. Not every person just goes and
does what they there's a way in which
that command is given and a way in
which then it is acted upon and so
therefore Islam has its own rules as well
and it has its own sharia that it
follows with regards to these particular
particular issues and that is something which is
important to remember and so the person who
studies the Quran appreciates the beauty of the
Sharia and that Allah
didn't make the Quran only for the individual
or the businessman or the father or the
mother or it is for everyone and so
there are rules that pertain to issues of
state and issues of
individuals and issues of family and issues of
business. All of this is contained within the
book of Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala but it's
understanding and application is something which therefore requires
study
and requires blessing from Allah Azza wa Jal
and success from him Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala And
may that come to the end of the
episode.
