Surat al-Yasin Today we'll talk about Surat
al-Yasin, a very famous surah and a
surah that is beloved to all Muslims around
the world.
And it's a part, as I explained previously,
of a cluster of surahs, starting with Surat
al-Hizab and ending with Surat al-Zumar.
We talk about istislam, or obedience, or submission
to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala's will.
It looks at this concept of giving up
our free will for His will subhanahu wa
ta'ala, from different angles.
And it's a very deep concept that requires
a certain amount of reflection in order for
us to actually perfect it and do it
properly.
And the surahs we've talked about now, up
till now, I've looked at it from different
perspectives.
Surat al-Hizab looked at following Allah subhanahu
wa ta'ala's commands when things are especially
difficult, when the commands are uncomfortable for us.
Surat al-Sabah looked at it from a
communal perspective, from a society perspective, from a
civilization perspective, how to follow Allah subhanahu wa
ta'ala's command, how to submit to Allah
subhanahu wa ta'ala's will as a community.
Surat al-Fatihah looked at the concept of
submitting to Allah's will by properly understanding what
He revealed to us and having proper perspective
of the world and His Deen that will
allow us to make the right decisions.
Because submitting to Him should result in decision
-making, proper decision-making processes that we should
be able to arrive at if we understand
things properly.
And in Surah al-Yasin, it's interesting, Surah
al-Yasin is always associated with death, isn't
it?
It's always the first surah that comes to
mind when someone passes away that they want
to recite upon their graves or after they
pass away.
And to be honest, there's not much evidence,
you know, or strong evidence to support that.
However, it's one of the most common and
widespread practices amongst Muslims around the world.
And it's not something to fight off.
Just wondering why, it's always interesting to see
why is it that this association of Surah
al-Yasin and death.
And I think that, though there is obviously
a clear one, I'm not sure if it
will encourage us to recite it upon the
graves of our deceased or beloved ones when
they pass away, but more for us so
we can understand the contrast of death itself,
life.
And what it really tells us, Surah al
-Yasin, is following and submitting to Allah subhanahu
wa ta'ala, following His commands and obeying
His rulings subhanahu wa ta'ala.
If we continue to do that, if we
continue to spread His messages and carry His
deen, that will lead to us living a
real life, actually living in contrast to death.
If you really want to live life, if
you really actually want to be alive, then
submit to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala as
well and continue to perform da'wah and
spread His deen which is the message and
the teaching, the learning point of Surah al
-Yasin.
Because around us in our lives, there are
many people who are alive but not really
alive and many people who die but live
on and it's not hard for us to
see there are people who are actually living
and producing something with their lives, doing something
with their lives and producing khair and their
legacies continue after them and others who live
a life that we're not even sure if
it was worth living to begin with and
it kind of fizzles out.
And it's sad to see that both exist
in the world and Allah subhanahu wa ta
'ala is saying that if you want to
live, Surah al-Yasin talks about death a
lot but really is talking about life.
If you want to live then follow, follow
what I teach you and continue to spread
the da'wah and continue to carry Islam
and you will live a true life in
dunya and in akhirah and that's the beautiful
message of Surah al-Yasin.
Surah al-Yasin is a famous surah and
it's loved by people and it's related to
the cause of death.
It's mentioned about the dead after they pass
away and sometimes about the dead while he's
in mourning.
And the question is, is there a reason
for the death of the dead?
So the
surah
begins by saying Yaseen and Yaseen, there are
three different ways to understand it.
If you go to the books of tafsir,
it's either two of the letters that exist
in the Qur'an at the beginning of
the surahs that we talked about previously or
it's one of the names of the Prophet
ﷺ or it's a word in a different
language, one of the early Semitic languages that
means, oh human being.
Either way it all works really.
Yaseen wal-Qur'an al-Hakeem and I
swear by the wise Qur'an, Indeed, you
are amongst the messengers, walking down a straight
path.
Upon you revealed the revelation of the unfathomable
and the merciful.
So that you may warn people who their
forefathers were not warned and that's why they
are in a state of ghafla, of negligence.
The first issue the surah talks about is
ghafla.
What kills life?
What kills life is oblivion, is negligence, is
not caring.
What kills life in people is being preoccupied
with issues that aren't important, insignificant matters and
living a life of ghafla, not paying attention
and taking interest in issues of importance and
significance.
Ghafla is the enemy of life, it's not
really death.
That's why the verses continue,
Indeed,
they have chains in their hands to their
necks.
فَهُمْ مُقْمَحُونَ Al-Iqmaah, what it means, مُقْمَحُونَ
What it means is for your head to
be upwards, your face to be facing to
the sky, but yet your eyesight is going
down.
Meaning you're facing something but you're not looking
at it.
You're looking upwards, you're looking at the sky
and the beauty and the magnificence of it,
but you're looking down.
You're not staring at it, which is the
perfect way to explain غَفْلَة.
It's right there, but you just don't want
to look at it.
And these chains he talks about, subhanAllah, in
this surah, they're not literal chains, they're moral
chains, they're figurative.
Talking about the chains that we chain ourselves
to by following dreams that are not worthy
of our time and our effort and our
emotions.
And he continues, subhanAllah, to talk about it,
There are barriers in front of them and
barriers behind them.
It's like these barriers are keeping them from
being able to see what's on the other
side, to see where the truth is.
Barriers that they probably put there.
Barriers that they don't want to move, they're
happy the way things are.
They can't see and
they don't want to see.
At the end of the ayat,
Indeed, we're the ones who are
going to resurrect the dead, offer life to
the dead.
And we're going to write
down everything, we're going to record everything that
they did in this life.
And the consequences and the aftermath of
how they behaved.
There's no legacy for those who don't
do anything.
But we will write their legacy to see
if there is one to begin with.
At the beginning of the surah, they say,
And this means either the letters
cut off at the beginning of the surah,
or it's a name from the names of
the Prophet, or it's a word from the
previous Islamic languages, and it means, يا إنسان
And all of this is in the books
of interpretation, and has been mentioned by the
Imams.
And the hadith begins with his oath in
the wise Qur'an,
And the enemy of
the first life is heedlessness, not death.
Death is not the enemy of life, but
heedlessness is the enemy of life.
The heedlessness that a person lives in is
a life that has no meaning, has no
meaning, has no interest in great things.
He lives his life heedlessly because of all
the big questions, and all their answers, and
all the deeds that have value.
He is heedless.
The aim is to have your
eyes facing the sky, but your eyes are
downcast from it.
To have your face facing the sky, but
your eyes are downcast.
The matter faces you, but you don't want
to look at it.
And you don't want to look at it.
The story
right after that in Surah Yaseen is the
story of Mu'min Yaseen, the believer of Yaseen
because we don't know his name really.
You'll find different evidence of what his name
may be in different books but we don't
know for sure.
And Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala didn't really
call him anything in the Surah He just
called him رَجُلٌ مُؤْمِنٌ, a believing person.
And the way the story goes is that
there is a village or a tribe or
a city or a nation of people that
have amongst them three messengers.
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala sent one messenger,
then he sent another one, then he sent
a third one.
So they have three messengers who are all
producing miracles for people, showing revelation.
They all agree, they're not fighting amongst each
other.
So there's three different religions, all the same
thing and people won't listen.
And when they came to the point where
they're almost going to kill their messengers and
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala's عقوبة, His punishment
is going to come and affect them and
they're going to be destroyed by Allah subhanahu
wa ta'ala's punishment.
This is how the Qur'an kind of
describes it.
He came running from the
end of the city, he lived maybe just
over where the suburbs, outside the city a
little bit.
He heard that his people aren't believing in
these prophets and they're going to be punished
and he took upon himself to do his
da'wah on his own, even though there
were three messengers in the village he was
living in.
So he comes running from afar.
Follow the prophets.
Follow
those who are not asking you for money,
they're not asking you to pay them.
And they have guidance.
And why wouldn't I worship the one who
created me and we're all going to return
to him.
Indeed, I
believe in our Lord, so listen to me.
Listen to me and learn from me.
I am giving you advice that is coming
from a sincere place.
So they killed him.
The surah doesn't talk about that part.
Because the surah is talking about life.
Mu'min Yasin lived.
He didn't live a long time, but he
lived.
And his legacy lived after him.
He was told to him the moment he
passed away, enter Jannah.
Before everyone else does.
When he entered, he said, I wish my
people knew.
I wish the people who just killed me
would know where I am right now.
How Allah forgave my sins and elevated my
status.
And then his people were punished by Allah.
See, everyone is going to die eventually.
See, his people died too.
And he died.
But some people actually live life to its
limits.
They live a life worth living.
And they continue to live after that.
They continue life after they pass away.
Whether it's through the legacy that they leave.
Or the life that Allah Subh'anaHu Wa
Ta-A'la has prepared for them.
Either way, this is what life is.
Doing what you love and doing what you
believe in.
And committing yourself to what you believe in.
Which is what the story of Mu'min Yasin
is teaching us.
This is the one who came running from
the outskirts of Medina.
To warn his people.
His people are those to whom Allah has
sent three messengers.
They have enough messengers.
But this man felt that Allah's punishment was
approaching his people.
To deny them of their messengers.
So he came running to them.
To warn them and advise them.
And invite them to Allah.
Even though he didn't need to do that.
Because in Medina there are three messengers.
And in the village there are three messengers.
So he came running.
O people, follow the messengers.
Follow those who do not ask you.
And what is it that I do not
worship?
Do I take gods besides Him?
Indeed I have believed in your Lord, so
listen to me.
So kill him.
And the Quran does not speak about his
death.
Because the Quran speaks in Surah Yasin about
life.
Mu'min Yasin lived.
He lived a beautiful life.
You deserve to live.
He lived his life calling to Allah.
Loving Allah.
So when his Lord took him.
In the state that He took him.
It was said, enter Paradise.
So he completed his life.
Then his trace continued until the Day of
Resurrection.
It is recited in the Book of Allah.
So he has a trace that is recited.
And he is alive.
Because his trace and his remembrance are still
among us.
And now he is alive with his Lord.
When he entered Paradise.
He said, I wish my people knew how
much my Lord has forgiven me.
says, what he is saying, subhanAllah, is such
a pity.
How my servants behave.
Such a pity.
They don't understand what is worth living for.
What is not worth living for.
What needs to be done.
They don't know.
And they are wasting their lives doing something
that is not worth doing.
And missing opportunities of actually standing up for
what is worth.
Life is limited by time.
But you want to actually live it.
By doing what the right thing is.
So that your legacy will continue and your
life will continue with Allah subhanahu wa ta
'ala.
He continues subhanahu wa ta'ala in verses
that talk about his creation.
And the first verse within them say
And the verses, when
they start, they say And a sign for
them is a dead piece of land.
How Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala grants it
life.
Just like He grants it life.
He'll grant our hearts life as well.
And He'll grant life to everyone who follows
His command and submits to His will.
They'll be granted life as well.
And they'll live a life that's worth living.
Just like He granted this dead piece of
earth life.
And then He brought from it fruit and
vegetables and green that people can eat.
And within it He put orchards of dates
and of grapes.
And water comes gushing through it.
So people may eat from these fruits.
And what they will put into the earth.
Will they not show gratitude?
See Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala takes a
dead piece of earth and not only does
He grant it life, He allows that piece
of earth that was just dead a few
minutes ago to live and grant life to
others.
Which is what your life could be.
If Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, if you
follow Him, Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala will
grant you a true life in this world.
And your life will grant other people life
as well.
Like that piece of land.
And the ayat continue giving examples of that
in the surah.
Then the ayat that tell the story of
the believer Yasin.
Ayat that talk about the greatness of the
creation of Allah.
And His creation in His universe.
And they start with His saying, And a
sign for them is the dead earth, which
We have given life to.
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala gives life to
the dead earth.
And when Allah gives it life, He gives
it life to people.
They eat from its fruits and what their
hands have done.
Glory be to Him who created all the
pairs from what the earth grows and from
themselves from what they do not know.
They talk about how He gives life to
the dead earth.
And that this dead earth that He gives
life to, gives life to these people.
It is the reason for people's life.
And you are like that.
If you follow the command of Allah and
follow His command, He gives you life, subhanahu
wa ta'ala.
And He gives life to you.
And He gives life to you, people.
The verse after that, he says, If it
is said to them, Be mindful of what
is before you and what is behind you,
that you may receive mercy.
And they'll be told at one point, Please
be aware of the life that you're living
and what's to come.
Make sure that you're taking care of your
present and your future.
But they don't listen.
So He gives another example.
He gives this example of a life that
is not worth living.
A life that is actually death, just not
literal.
Look what He says,
And when they're told, Give from
the extra wealth that you have to help
someone who's in need.
They say, You want us to give wealth
to someone who Allah could have given wealth
if He wanted to?
And they withhold aid.
And they don't help those who they can
help.
And that's a life that's not worth living.
And that's death.
Even though they walk around and they breathe
the air and they eat the food and
they enjoy the leisures and pleasures of life.
That mentality is not a life worth living.
And that's the lesson.
It's a very difficult one in Surah Yaseen.
I know, You want me to feed someone
Allah could have fed him.
He doesn't want to feed him.
Then it's not my problem.
And they withhold what they have.
You're
When?
When is it going to happen?
I'm not interested in what I'm going to
do.
Tell me when.
So He says, سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى مَا يَنْظُرُونَ إِلَّا
All they're waiting
for is one call.
And all of them will be gathered.
During the time as they're chatting
about insignificant things.
يَخِصِّمُونَ means they're arguing about stuff that are
not of high merit.
They're just talking about useless things.
A life of oblivion and negligence.
And they're taken and they don't even know
when they're taken.
What they were doing before that, they don't
know any of it.
However, on this day, no
one will be mistreated.
No one will be treated unfairly.
Everyone will be treated with fairness for what
they did.
مَا بَيْنَ ايْدِيكُمْ وَمَا خَلْفَكُمْ i.e. this
life of yours, and what they'll recite in
the future.
when you're offered the ability to give and
you don't give what's more beautiful in this
life than giving?
you have the opportunity to give and you
don't want to give?
you don't want to give?
what type of life is that?
that's not life you don't understand what life
is the most beautiful thing you'll ever taste
the nicest, the most pure nectar you'll ever
feel enter your soul is when you give
and you're given the opportunity to give but
you don't want to give
The verse after that talk about Ahlul
Jannah and describe Ahlul Jannah in a way
that you do not find anywhere else in
the Qur'an, it's beautiful.
Today, indeed, the people of Jannah are
occupied with pleasure.
They are preoccupied, they're very busy.
شغل, they're busy.
مشغول, you're busy.
They're extremely busy.
People sometimes make Jannah sound very boring.
And I apologize on behalf of all of
us who talk about these things, who don't
do it very well.
Jannah is not boring.
Jannah is the complete opposite of what the
concept of boring is.
If pain doesn't exist in Jannah, and illness
doesn't exist in Jannah, boredom does not exist
in Jannah either, at all.
You're going to be exposed to the kingdom
of God.
You get to see everything.
You get to explore everything.
Every day you are learning more and more.
It's unlimited the amount of knowledge that you're
going to be able to obtain and possess.
It's unlimited the amount of guidance and closeness
to Allah SWT that you're going to get
every single day.
It's unlimited.
You're extremely occupied and busy.
You're alive.
Isn't that what busy is?
You're alive.
You're doing something with your life.
They
and their partners.
One of the most beautiful verses in the
Quran is وَصْفُوا حَالِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ فِي الْجَنَّةِ It
They and their partners.
Jannah, my brothers, is
not boring, as some may imagine.
Some of us who talk about these issues,
unfortunately, and I apologize to you, imagined Jannah
as a place where people get bored.
Where there is no action.
Where there is nothing interesting.
Allah says, فِي شُغُلٍ فَاكِهُمْ مَشْغُلُونَ It is
a real life, my brothers, a life in
Jannah.
You see the kingdom of the heavens and
the earth.
You see the kingdom of what He has
created and the kingdom of Allah.
Every day you learn new things, an endless
knowledge.
Every day you learn something new.
Every day you get closer to Allah and
you learn something new.
Every day you discover something new.
The people of Jannah do not have any
free time at all.
Just as Allah removes sickness, death and illness,
so He removes boredom.
Boredom is not a part of the people
of Jannah because they are living a real
life.
If you go to the end of that
page, he says, when he tells the Prophet,
peace be upon him, to spread this message,
So that you may warn those
who are alive.
Well, of course you're going to warn those
who are alive, dear Rasulullah.
You're not going to go and talk to
people who are dead in their graves, are
you?
No, no.
He's talking about those who are actually alive.
Those who understand the value of life and
the importance of life and what life actually
is.
Go and warn them.
And then the disbelievers will be punished, Yawm
al-Qiyamah.
Don't they
see that Allah SWT created for them livestock?
He made it for them so that they
can eat from it and drink from it
and mount it and use it for their
needs and then they go and they worship
something else besides Allah?
They are asking for life from something that
is dead?
When Allah SWT, الحي القيوم, is offering them
everything they need?
How are you asking benefit and support and
strength from something that is dead?
Unless you are just the same in your
أَسْتَنْصُرُوا بِاللَّهِ وَاتَّخُذُوا مِنَ اللَّهِ the ayat at
the end of the surah he reminds us
نَارًا فَإِذَا أَنْتُم مِّنْهُ تُوقِدُونَ not only does
he take something dead and he offers it
life but that the green tree that is
the symbol of life one day will turn
into wood that will go into your fire
what will live will also die it's the
circle of life and the cycle of life
that Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala created إِنَّمَا
فَيَكُنْ when he wants something he says be
and it will be
كُلِّ شَيْءٍ وَإِلَيْهِ تُرْجَعُونَ exalted the one who
within his hands is the sovereignty of the
cosmos and the earth and we will all
return to him subhanahu wa ta'ala I
hope surah yaseen made sense to you I
hope you were able to see how Allah
subhanahu wa ta'ala asks us to submit
to his will to follow his commands to
obey him so that we may find life
because when we continue to carry his message
subhanahu wa ta'ala we will find true
life and we will live a life worthy
of living in this life and the hereafter
as well and those who don't I don't
know whether their life is worth living or
not at the end for the last two
minutes so tomorrow insha'Allah I won't be
here tomorrow for the pre-isha lecture so
the broadcasting will start the same time but
it will just be the advertisements and nasheed
and we will just broadcast in salatul isha
because I am on call tomorrow the day
after insha'Allah on Wednesday we will resume
the pre-isha lecture and I will continue
insha'Allah until the end of the month
I just have tomorrow that I am working
nights and I won't be able to make
it another issue is that insha'Allah on
Wednesday, so not tomorrow but Wednesday is the
beginning of the last 10 nights of Ramadan
so not tomorrow but the day after and
we have a program, we put the posters
on the website and we have circulated as
much as we could we will start insha
'Allah at 3 am an hour from 3
to 4 so just one hour and it
will give people who are at home enough
time to have their suhoor now given fajr
now is 4.30 and I was told
that some people need 40 minutes to eat
their suhoor I've never seen that happen before
I'd be interested to visit your home if
you eat suhoor for 40 minutes I don't
eat my futoor for 40 minutes so hopefully
the half hour from 4 to 4.30
or 4.15 will be enough insha'Allah
for everyone to have their suhoor the program
will include insha'Allah a few rakat of
tahajjud there will be some khawater a short
khawater in the midst of them there will
be some tasbihat, tahlilat, munajat there will be
dua insha'Allah sometimes in Arabic, sometimes in
English at the end sitting down and the
whole program insha'Allah will be an hour
from 3 to 4 so that's not starting
tomorrow that will start insha'Allah the day
after bi-idhnillah ta'ala and tomorrow there
won't be a pre-isha' lecture just an
FYI but I will continue the day after
insha'Allah until the end of the month
without any more delays so bi-idhnillah ta
'ala just stay in touch with all that
and may Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala accept
our deeds and grant us the barakah of
the last 10 nights of Ramadan and the
barakah of Daitul Qadr wa salallahu ala sayyidina
Muhammadin wa ala alihi wa sahbihi ajma'in
jazakumullah khair, barakallah fikum wasalamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi
wa barakatuh
