Today, inshallah, I will talk to you about
Surah Saad, within the cluster of Surahs from
Lahzab to Zumar that talk about submission to
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala and followership of
the orders of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala
and full obedience to Allah subhanahu wa ta
'ala, giving up our free will to His
will, jalla jalaluhum.
And Surah Saad is a Surah that I
really love and I enjoy explaining it to
people because of the very important message that
it carries.
Surah Saad talks about obedience and followership and
submission to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala through
acknowledging mistakes and going back to Al-Haqq
and returning and always returning to righteousness and
always accepting righteousness when you find yourself in
a state of falsehood.
We all make mistakes as human beings, it's
a part of the package of being alive,
it's a part of the package of being
a human being and it's a really good
trait for all of us to have as
Muslims is to be able to take a
mistake back or to acknowledge that we made
mistakes and go back to Al-Haqq, to
righteousness again and not feel ashamed or embarrassed
doing that when a mistake is pointed out.
And this is not just an important trait
to have as a Muslim, it's an important
attribute to have as a human being and
it's one of the most talked about issues
within the Qur'an, the acceptance of righteousness,
even if it's against yourself and specifically when
we make mistakes and that's basically what Surah
Saad teaches and it begins right away saying
And I swear by the Qur'an that
is there, that was revealed so that you
may remember and be reminded Now Bal here
in the Surah, Bal is an extremely interesting
word in Arabic because it means a full
sentence, it means that the reason for really
what's happening is not what they claim it
to be, it's the following or it's not
what they're saying, the real reason for why
things are going on the way they are
is the following, so that's what Bal actually
means, it's a full sentence in English It
says that the disbelievers don't disbelieve because they
don't agree with it or they don't like
it, the real reason they don't disbelieve is
that they're in a state of Izzah and
Shiqaq Izzah is being full of themselves, of
being too proud, of thinking too much of
themselves, of being in a state of vanity
or arrogance and Shiqaq is willingness to stay
and to stick to doing something that is
wrong, that's what Shiqaq means
It's when you're
in a state of being wrong but just
won't leave it and that's literally what the
word Shiqaq means and the Surah right away
explains that and then it starts talking about
the behaviors of the disbelievers and the Surah
And the leaders of
the disbelievers start to walk amongst the people
and say please be perseverant and hold on
to your idols, that is the right way
to do it مَا سَمِعْنَا بِهَذَا فِي الْمِلَّةِ
What Muhammad is
bringing you've never heard before, none of our
forefathers talked about it no one has ever
brought this up, it's totally new, it's made
up it's made up and the refusal of
something just because it's new or it's different
is one of the problems that they actually
carried and then the surah starts counting all
these أقوام, all these nations كَذَّبَتْ قَبْلَهُمْ قَوْمُ
الْأَحْزَابِ the people of Nuh disbelieved in their
prophets for the same reason and the same
way Aad did the same thing, Fir'aun
did the same thing, Thamud, the people of
Lut the people of Shu'ayb, all of
them, all these groups the confederates as Allah
called them in the surah did the same
thing they refused to listen to their prophets
even though it was clear to them at
some point that they were on the wrong
side of things and then the ayah says,
and the people who are disbelieving in you
الله عليه وسلم are waiting for the same
outcome and consequences surah Saad, the surah before
the last one in the group of surahs
which starts with al-Ahzab and ends with
al-Zumar and it talks about submitting to
Allah and submitting to Him and absolute obedience
and it looks at this matter from different
angles and surah Saad is very beautiful because
it talks about submitting to Allah and submitting
to Him by returning to the truth when
you fall into error if a person falls
into error, his heart will be submissive to
Allah capable of the truth, obedient to the
command of Allah and he will return immediately
when he finds himself in error he will
return to the truth, and this is a
special quality for a Muslim and it is
a beautiful quality for any person, whether he
is a Muslim or not whether he is
religious or not, to be able to return
to the truth and whoever does this, Allah
will guide him by His permission that is,
whoever has this ability to return to the
truth when he makes a mistake this is
what Allah guides him to do because it
will become clear to him at some point
in his life that he believes in the
wrong thing and that he has made a
grave mistake and he will return to Allah,
Glory be to Him who is, Glory be
to Him, the manifest truth and the surah
starts like this, directly Saad, and the Qur
'an with the mention Rather, those who disbelieve
in pride and division Rather, it means that
the reason for disbelief is not that they
are not believers and that the words of
the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of
Allah be upon him, did not convince them
and that they rejected Islam No, but the
problem is that those who disbelieve in pride
and division their souls have grown up, these
desires have been blown away this ego has
been blown away with them and they are
in division, they realize that they are on
the wrong, but they insist on the wrong
and this is the meaning of division who
realizes that he has made a mistake, but
he does not like to go back to
it because going back to it is embarrassing
and it is an embarrassment to go back
to a person and his mistakes so this
is the problem of the disbelievers the
verses
continue so these disbelievers talk about their position
as if they are patient with the truth
patience with the gods we did not hear
this from Muhammad in the religion before us
our fathers did not talk about it it
is a new thing, we reject it like
this because it is new the verses continue
and they talk about the messengers, about the
nations who did this and they count the
people of Noah, Aad, Pharaoh, Thamud, Lot, and
the people of Achaia those are the parties,
all of them have denied the messengers and
those who are around the Prophet, peace and
blessings of Allah be upon him, do not
look at them except a single scream, there
is no difference our Lord warns them to
go back to their mistakes so
he had a time during the week where
he would go into solitude and pray when
he had free time, he did not travel
he went and he found a place where
he would be able to pray and worship
Allah through rituals quietly and peacefully so as
he was doing that, two people who have
disputes two people who are disputing or fighting
or disagreeing they jump over the fence of
Dawood's residence and they come into the mihrab,
they come to where he is actually worshipping,
peace and blessings of Allah be upon him
you can imagine Dawood, peace and blessings of
Allah be upon him, at that moment is
extremely surprised he is very frustrated, they have
invaded his privacy, invaded his home at a
time during his personal time after he has
made it very clear that this time is
mine and he is giving the rest of
his time for the sake of Allah to
help people but they came and they asked
a question my brother here, he has 99
she-camels and I only have one and
he asked me to add my she-camel
to his so he can take care of
it for me and when I did that,
he ended up taking my she-camel away
and he won't return it to me anymore
so Dawood, here is the story, he says
he said indeed he has mistreated you, he
has oppressed you by asking for your one
she-camel to his and taking it away
and not giving it back and that's what
happens with people who have business agreements usually
they mistreat each other except those who believe
in Allah and do the right thing and
there is very few of them Dawood made
a mistake Dawood only listened to one side
of the story he didn't listen to the
other side as obvious as one side of
the story may seem to you if you
are in a placement of judging or if
you are going to choose a side you
are obligated by Allah and your faith to
listen to the other side no matter how
unlikely it seems that the other side has
any merit and any points that are worth
making at all no matter how ridiculous the
other side's position may seem to you if
you are going to make judgment or you
are going to choose a side you are
obligated by Allah to listen to the other
side Dawood didn't and Dawood realized he made
a mistake so he asked Allah for forgiveness
and he made sujood in an act of
humbleness feeling bad that he made the mistake
and Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala forgave him
and then Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala called
upon him Ya Dawood, O Dawood, we have
made you surely a steward here on earth
and responsible in the name of Allah subhanahu
wa ta'ala so judge amongst people with
righteousness and don't follow your self-desires and
that will cause you to leave and be
led astray from the way of Allah subhanahu
wa ta'ala it was in this surah
that the first time the sahaba heard the
word khalifah they had never heard the word
before it was new in terms of the
job description of the human being on earth
it came in this surah in the surah
that's talking about the ability to acknowledge and
recognize our mistakes and go back openly to
what is righteous and to go back to
the truth and to accept the truth upon
ourselves a very worthy place for this ayah
to exist in the Quran the ayah right
after that commentary says
وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا بَاطِلًا we did not create the
cosmos and the earth through falsehood ذَلِكَ ظَنُّ
الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا that's what the disbelievers think that
there's no purpose to any of this but
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala created all this
with a purpose He created it through truthfulness
and righteousness and we need to adhere to
righteousness all our lives specifically when we make
the mistake and it seems like we have
went astray we need to take ourselves back
to haqq immediately and that has to be
a trait in who we are the ayah
كَالْمُفْسِدِينَ فِي الْأَرْضِ how can you make equal
someone who does that and someone who doesn't
which is what the ayat are saying فَقِصَّةِ
I think this is an important
part of the story يَدْ أَرِي رِيزَنْ He
could have said very simply It was my
day off They invaded my privacy They came
uninvited I work all week long for these
people I'm a very very adamant judge and
I take time to listen to things and
I was surprised by this I didn't take
time There's a million ways for دَاوُودْ to
explain and justify his mistake but it makes
no difference He still made a mistake and
he needs to go back to الحق regardless
regardless of all the rationalizations of why he
made this mistake and he would have been
right دَاوُودْ could have punished these two people
These two people who came in by the
way were angels Allah سبحانه وتعالى sent for
the lesson for دَاوُودْ to learn and for
us obviously to learn but basically دَاوُودْ could
have made the argument that this was not
my fault They came in the wrong time
in the wrong way in the wrong place
and everything was wrong مَسْتَأْذَنْ They didn't even
knock on the door They just came in
They jumped over the wall Who does that?
But he made a mistake All that can
be said for hours but دَاوُودْ at the
end made a mistake So he immediately made
ركوع وسجود and he asked Allah to forgive
him and Allah forgave him and he acknowledged
his mistake and that is the trait of
true believers and people who are close to
Allah سبحانه وتعالى close to accepting of الحق
at all costs The second story The story
of سُلَيْمَان سُلَيْمَان had two problems سُلَيْمَان عليه
loved horses and there was this parade of
horses and he spent time looking at these
horses He was taken by the breeds and
by the colors and by the elegance and
the beauty of his horses and the horses
that exist and the narration goes that he
postponed عصر or a prayer later than he
I spent time
loving and looking at the خير that Allah
gave me and I forgot to do the
remembrance that He ordered me to do until
Send me back the horses
وَالْأَعْنَاقِ and he spent, after he prayed he
spent hours patting these horses and making تسبيح
and making دعاء and making استغفار If you
open some of the books of تفسير you'll
find some of them making تفسير that Suleiman
slaughtered all the horses No, no, he didn't
slaughter any of the horses That is a
narration that comes from the إسرائيليات that go
against everything that we know to be merciful
and know to be the behavior of Prophets
ﷺ Why would he slaughter animals that did
nothing wrong it was his mistake that would
go against the whole point of the story
and the ayah doesn't mean that at all
when you're massaging or you're patting and it
doesn't mean killing but again that's what the
إسرائيليات have and these are one of the
differences that as Muslims we have with بنو
إسرائيل in the way that we view Prophets
and the way that we understand their stories
and the Qur'an tells us these stories
in a certain way So Dawood Suleiman ﷺ
immediately acknowledged I made a mistake أَتَخَرْتْ فِي
I was late in my prayer because
of the fact that I loved all these
animals a bit too much and he acknowledged
that openly even though he didn't have to
Suleiman
one night said I'm going to have such
and such of sons and I'm going to
make them all مُجَاهِدِين فِي سَبِيلِ الله I'm
going to put them all to work for
the service of Allah He didn't say Inshallah
and once he had a son or he
had a child who was disabled and when
he had that child he acknowledged again قَالَ
O my Lord forgive me
I made a mistake again he's showing us
how Suleiman the king and Dawood the king
before him were not too proud and they
weren't too arrogant or vain to acknowledge when
they made simple mistakes or big mistakes they
made it very clear when it happened and
at that point when he acknowledged his mistake
openly and people knew that he made a
mistake and he asked for forgiveness he made
Grant me a sovereignty that
you grant no one after me so I
may prove that that kings can use their
strength and use their power to serve Allah
subhanahu wa ta'ala which Suleiman a.s.
did and Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala granted
him that as well and the second story
is the story of Dawood and Suleiman the
story of Suleiman a.s. and Suleiman made
two mistakes in the verses the first was
when he was shown a horse a white
horse with black spots on its back and
on its nose and on its ankles he
was looking at it and he was amazed
by it he liked the horse so he
asked the horse to perform a prayer until
the sun went down and he admitted and
he said until the sun went down I
made a mistake Dawood a.s. in the
evening he said my lord I loved the
love of goodness from the remembrance of my
lord so he said I loved the love
of goodness which is the horse the blessing
that Allah blessed it with the goodness from
the remembrance of my lord they returned it
to him and he started to wipe his
nose and ankles and he prayed then he
went to the horse he wiped his nose
and ankles and he praised Allah and he
asked Allah and he didn't kill it as
the Israelis say in their narrations in which
they praise the prophethood of the prophets and
the messengers and their morals so how could
he kill animals that he didn't sin because
he made a mistake and he was late
in the prayer but when he wiped his
nose and ankles he wiped his praise and
this is the right thing a confession of
a mistake and this is a virtue the
surah came to give examples then he made
a mistake when he wanted peace be upon
him to marry his wife in one night
and bring out a hundred or a thousand
Mujahideen in the way of Allah and he
didn't say inshallah and when he didn't say
that we tried Sulaiman and we threw on
his chair a body and he was given
one son and he had a disability and
when he saw that he had cancer so
he carried his son then he asked forgiveness
of his lord and he admitted that he
made a mistake and he made that great
supplication give me a kingdom that no one
after me should have when a person returns
to the truth when he admits his mistake
and he returns to Allah this is a
moment in which the supplication and Allah answered
his supplication and gave him a kingdom that
no one after him and he used this
kingdom in obeying Allah the example after that
is the example of Ayyub now Ayyub you
can see all these examples are very people
who are have power people who are given
difficulties afterwards Suleiman had a child who was
disabled difficult things later in their lives Dawud
had every reason not to engage these people
but they're showing us a trait of those
who are able to acknowledge their mistakes and
not focus on other people's mistakes Dawud didn't
focus on the mistakes that the two men
who came in made you're coming in the
wrong time you're jumping he's not focusing on
those mistakes Suleiman is not focusing on the
fact that he was now he has a
he has a hard difficulty he has a
difficulty or calamity in his life taking care
of a disabled he didn't focus on these
parts of it all he focused on his
mistake which is what we were supposed to
do we're not supposed to focus on what
other people are doing wrong we're supposed to
focus on what we're doing wrong because we're
going to be held accountable for our actions
not others Ayub A.S. spent years and
years and years persevering and being patient as
he was extremely ill he lost his family
he lost his social status he lost his
wealth he lost everything all that was left
was his wife and she took care of
him for many many many years and one
day she got upset and she got frustrated
and she said something when is this going
to end when are you going to make
dua for this to finish so Ayub A
.S. in a moment of anger because he
was upset that his wife had shown objection
to Allah A.S. command he said Wallahi
if I get better I'm going to hit
you that's what he said now this is
the mistake he shouldn't have said that to
his wife he was at fault for saying
that so once Allah A.S. granted him
shifa he was ordered by Allah وَخُذْ بِيَدِكَ
ضِغْثً ضِغْثً means a piece of grass two
blades of grass or three blades of grass
وَجَدَنَاهُ صَابِرًا you made a mistake you shouldn't
have said that to your wife take a
piece of grass and don't ruin your yameen
and be attentive to the fact that what
you said and the way you said it
wasn't in the right context nor the right
way and even though Dawood was patient for
18 years in illness losing everything Allah A
.S. pointed out when he made a mistake
and when he mistreated his wife and how
to make up for it the story that
follows is the story of Ayyub A.S.
he was patient in illness and he struggled
in illness for many years they say for
8 or 10 years or as it was
mentioned in some of the athars Ayyub A
.S. lost everything during his illness he lost
everything his face and his children he lost
everything and he didn't object to Allah and
he only had his wife to serve him
and she was patient and considerate then one
day she got angry or she got tired
of what she was doing and she sold
her hair to serve her husband and she
said you didn't pray to Allah as if
she was against it and he said I
swear to Allah if Allah cures me I
will hit you Allah A.S. pointed out
his mistake and said take a handful of
hashish and hit him and don't make a
sound so that there is no harm and
even if you don't make a sound this
is what you said is wrong this is
what you said Ayyub your wife shouldn't be
said his patience didn't cure him for 18
years in illness that he made a mistake
in what he said to his wife and
of course Ayyub repented and Allah A.S.
accepted him the servant is blessed as the
surah says he is one who turns the
ayah says one of the best servants indeed
he is someone who returns one who turns
to Allah returns to righteousness all the time
the ayahs continue and they tell us about
something said the people of Jahannam they say
why aren't we seeing people that we used
to think were wrong we used to think
they were on our side they were making
the same mistakes we were making أَتَّخَذْنَاهُمْ سِخْرِيًّا
أَمْزَاغَتْ عَنْهُمُ الْأَبْصَارِ did we make too much
fun of them or were we wrong in
estimating who they were or were they missed
in all of the judgment that happened إِنَّ
is what أَهْلِ النَّارِ are going to quarrel
about and dispute about no, neither really what
happened is the people that they're talking about
where are the evil people that we're not
seeing with us they're people who acknowledge during
their lives at some point that they made
a mistake and they went back to Allah
سُبْحَانَهُ and they're saved يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ and the
people in Jahannam were just the people who
didn't those who were in Jahannam were just
the ones who didn't they didn't realize that
the people that they the evil people that
they thought were evil or those whom they
estimated to be evil at some point realized
they're making a mistake and returned back to
Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى and that's why they
were saved يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ it's very simple it's
Obviously the second one is not true because
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala is telling him,
I didn't make you better than Adam, I
made Adam better So أَسْتَكْبَرْتْ is arrogance, what
is it?
Either when you're saying no to my command,
Iblis, either you think that I made you
higher than Adam, you're actually better than آدم
عالين or you're arrogant In both situations you
should be able to say that you're mistaken
because arrogance is a mistake and I didn't
make you عالي, I didn't make you better
So why don't you
go back to the حق Go back to
righteousness, acknowledge your mistake
I said I'm better than him So
he was arrogant خَلَقْتَنِي مِّن نَّارٍ وَخَلَقْتَهُ مِّنْ
You created me from fire and him
from the soil of the earth and mud
is not an equivalent to fire That was
his argument So Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala
casted him out of Jannah Iblis could have
at any point said, I'm wrong, I'm...
No, he stuck to his mistake It's a
very scary concept, Surah As-Sa'd, one that
teaches Sticking to your mistake when you know
you've made a mistake That's what Iblis did
That's why at the end of the Surah
Tell them
I'm not asking for any wealth or money
I'm not
someone who makes things up I'm not someone
who tries to show myself to be something
different than I am I'm not a متكلّف,
I'm not trying to be something that I'm
not I'm not perfect, I do make mistakes
And when I make mistakes, I retract And
I go back to
This Surah has been a reminder
to the human race
And you will all know the outcome of
this problem later on You'll learn the importance
of this problem later on آخر قصة في
I hope that was beneficial
