Today, inshallah, I will start with the ninth
cluster of surahs in the Qur'an from
Qaf to Al-Hadeed.
And these surahs talk about, what they do
is they offer comparisons, they compare things for
us and then they offer us choices.
And each surah is going to compare two
different things and offer us two different choices.
And the way these surahs go through these
comparisons and choices is very interesting.
And the issues that they tackle, you know,
guidance, misguidance, knowledge and ignorance, bliss or blessing
versus punishment, and so on and so forth.
The first surah in this cluster, surah Qaf,
offers probably the biggest comparison or the most
important of all, the most important choices.
And it's a very famous surah that Muslims
have historically always loved and recited in prayers.
And there's a narration that maybe lacks a
little bit of authenticity, but some of the
tabi'een pointed it out, that the Prophet,
peace be upon him, gave a khutbah once
just by reciting the surah on the minbar
and then came down.
Because of how the structure of the surah,
the way it's structured and how it tells
the story.
It's a Meccan surah and it offers not
a flashback, but a flash forward.
It kind of tells us the story from
the beginning till the end of what's going
to be.
And then it gives us a chance to
take a step back and make a choice
again.
And then it fast forwards again and then
it takes us back again to make a
choice again.
And I think it's that movement that makes
the surah interesting and loved by those who
recite it.
It begins by Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala
So the beginning of the surah where Allah
subhanahu wa ta'ala makes an oath by
the Qur'an, by the glorious Qur'an,
بَلْ عَجِبُوا, he's saying the true problem has
always been أَنْ جَاءَهُمْ مُنذِرٌ مِّنْهُمْ that people
have received messengers from themselves, meaning people like
them فَقَالَ الْكَافِرُونَ and the disbelievers say هَذَا
شَيْءٌ عَجِيبٌ this is something that is unbelievable
or something that we can't comprehend أَيْذَا مِتْنَا
وَكُنَّا تُرَابًا if we die and go back
to the earth ذَٰلِكَ رَجَعٌ بَعِيلٌ it's impossible
for us to ever come back, it's too
indeed, we know very clearly where their bodies
go into this earth and how the earth
takes their cells and their molecules and how
it all is brought back again وَعِندَنَا كِتَابٌ
حَفِيهٌ and it's all being recorded and then
the verse, the surah begins telling us the
These verses, what they're saying Allah Subhanahu Wa
Ta'ala is asking us Did you not
look at the cosmos above you?
How He created it, beautified it Did you
not look at the earth in front of
you?
How it is wide in every direction And
that there are mountains in it and valleys
and rivers Did you not see how water
comes out from the sky And life came
from the earth because of it And this
life that comes from the earth Comes in
different forms and different colors And different species
and different types And different plants and different
animals And all of them are feeding upon
each other And all of them are provision
for one another Did you not see how
Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala grants life To
a dead piece of earth كَذَٰلِكَ الْخُرُوجِ And
that is how you will be resurrected يَوْمَ
It continues Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala
Did it seem to
anyone that it was difficult For Allah Subhanahu
Wa Ta'ala to create the first creation
The
problem with people is that they have a
doubt In life being returned again In resurrection
Surah Al-Qaaf In the first Surah The
Surah that begins with Al-Qaaf and ends
with Al-Hadeed And this Surah After we
talked about the Surah of our Master Muhammad
Peace be upon him From Muhammad to the
Prophets This Surah presents a group of comparisons
And with it, choices Each Surah compares between
two things And gives us two choices And
the issues that the Surah compares And the
choices that the Surah gives us Are very
beautiful and important And they go through all
the major issues of religion So Surah Al
-Qaaf is the first Surah in this context
And perhaps it is one of the most
important If it wasn't the most important Surah
And its comparison is more important than the
comparisons And its choices are more important than
the choices And it is a Surah loved
by the souls People love it and love
listening to it And for a valid reason
The Surah begins with Allah He swears by
the glorious Qur'an And he says the
problem is that people When a warner came
to them, they were astonished And they said,
there is something strange A warner comes to
us from us What is strange in the
matter?
It is not known, but this is what
they say They say, if we die and
we are dust We return to that, a
far return No one returns when he dies
Allah says, We have already known what the
earth lacks of them And We have a
Book that guards No, we know what the
earth takes from their bodies And where these
parts of the bodies go And all of
it will be returned on the Day of
Resurrection This is a sign of resurrection Surah
Al-Qaf The story of existence and creation
will be told to us And it will
take us to the future that awaits us
Then it will return to us to choose
Then it will take us to the future
again Then it will return to us to
choose It will show us what will happen
Then it will return to us to life
To choose again Then it will take us
again to the future And perhaps because of
this movement in the surah People loved it
and fell in love with its recitation The
concept of resurrection in Surah Al-Qaf You
see at the beginning of the surah The
problem of the disbelievers is they don't believe
in resurrection And then the surah as it
goes forward And tells us the story of
creation Tells us just like He created the
first time You will be resurrected And people
have a problem with that Even though Allah
did not have any trouble creating it the
first time Why would He have trouble creating
it the second time But that's not the
end of the story The story continues Now
the human being comes along Surah Al
-Qaf Indeed
He created the human being We know what
his nafs, what his soul Continues to whisper
to him and to tell him to do
And we are closer to the human being
than his jugular vein As the two That
have been given the duty and responsibility To
write down all the good and bad deeds
As they sit on the right and on
the left Nothing is said Nothing is said
Everything that you see Everything that we say
Is being documented That is life That's basically
That is in a nutshell Those three verses
Is the basic summary of what life actually
is And then we die And indeed the
difficult Sakra means It's a common Arabic word
It means when you lose your mind It's
commonly used for people who are drunk Or
intoxicated But here it actually means intoxication of
death Because when you die You don't function
as clearly It is so difficult It is
so painful It is so scary That you're
not fully with it at that moment And
that difficulty of death comes along It came
with righteousness And that's what you've been running
away from all this time Allah subhanahu wa
ta'ala says This is the anchor verse
in the surah Indeed you've been in a
state of oblivion from all this And now
the And now the obstacle That was between
you and seeing the truth Has been lifted
The cover has been lifted Now you see
10 out of 10 This is a figure
of speech in Arabic When you say Your
eyes are like iron It's just a figure
of speech That means that you see clearly
now You see clearly now Allah
subhanahu
wa ta'ala When
the two receivers receive From the right and
from the left a seat He does not
utter a word Except that he has a
watcher There is no word that man says
in his life Except that it has been
recorded on him If it is good for
him And if it is bad for him
And these three verses Summarize life Summarize our
lives in these three verses We are created
and our souls are whispered to us So
either we disobey it in what it whispered
to us Or we obey it And in
both cases There is someone who documents every
word we say And the intoxication of death
comes with the truth Until the hour of
truth comes Until we die That is what
you used to avoid This is what we
used to avoid all our lives This is
what we used to try to ignore as
much as we could We do not like
to talk about it We do not like
to listen to those who talk about it
Because it is a painful issue That is
what you used to avoid But you avoid
what?
From the truth From what is coming to
you You used to be heedless of this
This is the main verse in the surah
The heedlessness To be heedless To be heedless
of the fact that a person is aware
or not aware That is, to be heedless
of a fact That is, he is really
heedless He does not realize anything of what
is real in this existence Or he realizes,
but he becomes heedless So he is in
intentional heedlessness That is, he wants to be
The ayat continue As the person After
And the nafs or the shaytan Or
the one that helped this person Walked down
the road of oblivion The مُفسِّرون Those who
explained the surah Have differed in their opinions
On what قَرِينُهُ means here It doesn't make
a difference Really in the meaning هَذَا مَا
This is what we have This
is what we brought It's nothing but this
is what we've got So they're called upon
And then Allah
subhanahu wa ta'ala Calls upon them that
Those who did 1, 2, 3 كَفَّار عَنِيد
Those who disbelieved in Allah subhanahu wa
ta'ala Those who were too stubborn To
listen to what was truth Those who withheld
And he counts subhanahu wa ta'ala
A number of attributes These will be thrown
into Into the hellfire for punishment So the
The one that comes with The يوم
القيامة Whether it's your نَفس Or it's the
Or whether it's a friend That led
you astray He will say
Oh my lord I'm not the reason that
This person made these choices And was led
He was
misguided He was misled That's what he wanted
He made these choices I just helped him
along It was all him
وتعالى says Enough argument No more يوم القيامة
There's no time for us to argue There's
no time for us to defend ourselves There's
no time to make There's nothing It's over
Allah سبحانه وتعالى says I've given judgment prior
to your creation And now this judgment is
going to come through It's going to go
بِظَلَّامٍ لِلْعَبِيدِ Allah سبحانه وتعالى will say I'm
not one to oppress my own servants and
my own creation يَوْمَ نَقُولُ لِجَهَنَّمَ هَلِمْ تَلَأْتِ
On the day that we
say to Jahannam Are you full?
And Jahannam will say back No, I have
room for more if there's more وَلَيَّهَذُ بِاللَّهِ
This ayah, one of
the most famous ayahs in the Qur'an
It's like when you listen to the surah
You know that the build up is coming
to that verse You can feel it, you're
listening to the verses But you know it's
coming, that verse is coming And you're waiting
for it And no matter how many times,
it never gets old You can hear it
every single day for the rest of your
life And every time you come to it
There'll be a moment where you just stand
there and you shiver Because
that's one choice This is the comparison, this
is how it's gonna be يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَ Either
this or that That
The other one is Jannah is being prepared
for the pious It's not far away The
ones who feared Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala
in their hearts and brought a heart that
was filled with repentance to Allah subhanahu wa
ta'ala They'll be told يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَ Enter
in peace This is the day of eternity
You will get in this place whatever you
want and more See, both there's more جَهَنَّمْ
Yes, I can take more
And in Jannah, وَلَدَيْنَا مَزِيدٍ You'll get more
You're getting more of everything Regardless, it's just
a matter of what you want It's just
a matter of what you're going to make
the choice of It's all it is, but
they're both there And it's as if at
that moment the surah takes you back إِنَّ
Indeed, there is a
good remembrance here for someone who's able to
listen with his heart and witness what's being
said and understand it and contemplate it So
it's like we lived through the moment and
now you're given a chance to go back
again Go back again, what do you do?
What do we do when we go back?
Do we continue to live in the غَفْلَة
that took the person who ended up going
to the punishment and live through that غَفْلَة
Or do we take the other choice
It's just
a matter of what you want to choose
The verses continue
So Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala
says indeed we created the cosmos and the
earth again going back again just like the
beginning of the surah
فَوْقَهُمْ almost the same just in a smaller
version taking it back again and we created
subhanahu wa ta'ala the cosmos and the
earth in six days it caused him no
tire it's not that Allah didn't need time
to create creation needed time to come forward
six of his days subhanahu wa ta'ala
is just a figure of speech in terms
of what his days are to us is
13 point something billion years we know that
now but it doesn't make a difference because
time to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala is
irrelevant he doesn't live through time subhanahu wa
ta'ala time to him one second in
a million or a billion years what's the
difference to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala nothing
the difference to us is the difference is
huge all we are is time all we
actually are just an amount of time we're
here for an amount of time you take
away time that means you took away us
that's really all it is so for us
it's a big deal for Allah subhanahu wa
ta'ala it's nothing but then why is
he reminding us that it took six days
because you have to show perseverance everything is
going to take time everything is going to
take time you have to stand your ground
you have to be patient you have to
show perseverance وسبح بحمد ربك and exalt your
lord and praise him before the sunrise and
sunset and at night as you're making your
sujood remember Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala as
if just like there's a story I told
in Arabic a man who would remind himself
of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala would go
and lie between his bed and the wall
and act like it was a grave and
tell himself you're dead you lost the chance
to do any good deeds now now you're
going to be asked now you have nothing
to defend yourself now and scare himself then
he would wake up get up and turn
on the light and say well now you're
back what are you going to do you've
been given a second chance in surat Qaf
he's doing exactly that here's a second chance
after this whole story Allah subhanahu wa ta
'ala says indeed this is a reminder for
those who have a heart that can contemplate
and ears that want to listen and they
want to pay attention he repeats it again
وَلَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا he goes back again this is
like the beginning of the surah it tells
the story all over again I created all
this so show perseverance فَصْبِر hold on to
this and do your job properly don't give
up and don't lose hope and don't lose
faith and don't become lazy and don't get
distracted and exalt the Lord and praise your
Lord and keep on doing what you need
to do and then it takes us back
again وَاسْتَمِعْ and then listen keep your ears
open and listen listen well
الْمُنَادِي مِن مَكَانٍ قَرِيبٍ listen well when finally
that last announcement is made it'll be close
to you it won't be very far away
when that final announcement and calling occurs يَوْمَ
يَسْمَعُونَ الصَّيِّحَةَ بِالْحَقِّ on that day you will
hear that final blow final horn will be
blown ذَٰلِكَ يَوْمُ الْخُرُوجَ on that day we
will all be resurrected
حَشْرٌ عَلَيْنَا يَسِيرٌ he says, indeed we grant
life and we grant death and everything comes
back to us on that day the earth
will be ripped open and people will come
out of their graves running
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala says at
the end of the surah we know what
they're saying we know what they're answering you
and how people are responding to this وَمَا
أَنتَ عَلَيْهِمْ بِجَبَّعُ you are in no position
to force anyone to do anything and that's
kind of the announcement of what these this
cluster of surahs are going to be talking
about وَمَا أَنتَ عَلَيْهِمْ بِجَبَّعُ we are not
here to force people to do anything it's
just, hear the comparisons and hear the choices
go ahead, it's totally up to you the
ball's in your court, do what you will
but we have to offer these comparisons and
so remind people with the Quran remind those
who have fearfulness of of the promises that
I have made Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala
is saying use the Quran to remind people
who do we remind?
remind those who fear the promises that I
have made of punishment and of good deeds
and of joy to come that's what the
surah is all about we're back again see,
twice it took us to the future and
then took us back again and took us
to the future and then the last surah
took us back again here, here's the Quran,
use it how you will how do you
want to use it?
it's here to remind you and to remind
me if you want to be reminded and
if not, then fine, leave it but this
comparison between haqq and batil between jannah and
nar which is the comparison of the first
surah of this cluster, surah at-qaf compares
these two large decisions that need to be
made and in the middle of the surah
he reminds us, the problem is ghafla the
problem is obliviance you can't act like you're
not making a choice you're making a choice
by not making a choice, you're making a
choice if you don't make a choice and
that's a choice that you've made yawm al
qiyam, the moment you die you'll be told
you were in oblivion of this and now
you have to deal with the fact that
you lived in oblivion of this refusing to
think about it avoiding taking time to contemplate
what's going to come next but it's going
to come and you have a chance now
so make your choice and make sure that
you watch out for oblivion and that's what
surah at-qaf basically teaches us and tells
us and I hope that was beneficial
