Surah Al-Fatihah & Surah Al-Hujurat
Today we start with
the ninth cluster of surahs in the Qur
'an and it's a short one, it only
has three surahs within it Muhammad Al-Fatihah
and Al-Hujurat and these three surahs, their
theme is that they all talk about the
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ one way or the other
I mean each one of these surahs is
going to shed light on an aspect of
who he is to us ﷺ and today
I'll start with the first surah that is
named after him it's the only surah in
the Qur'an that is named Muhammad and
the interesting part of the surah Muhammad ﷺ
is that it doesn't really talk about him
it's not a surah that is giving us
a biography or explaining to us his life
story no, it couldn't be farther from that
it's actually telling us what we're supposed to
do it's pointing the...
it's focusing the light on us but the
surah is named after him ﷺ because the
theme of it, the first set of the
three surahs that are going to talk about
him in different ways the theme of it
is that following him ﷺ is the only
way to ensure that your actions are accepted
and that you achieve your goals that things
work out for you as an individual and
as societies meaning his way ﷺ is the
proper way for societies and individuals to prosper
and it's the way that Allah ﷻ will
accept deeds sometimes you don't think about that
just doing a good deed isn't necessarily enough
we have to talk about acceptance meaning will
Allah ﷻ accept this deed it's a commonly
forgotten aspect of performing good deeds but it's
extremely important in order for you to do
the good deed you have to come up
with the intention you have to put in
the time and effort and you have to
make sure it actually happens but then how
do you know that that deed is accepted
or not?
that's the issue here surah Muhammad reminds us
that in order for our deeds to be
accepted we have to be following his footsteps
ﷺ the surah begins by
عَن سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ أَضَلَّ أَعْمَالَهُمْ very clearly at
the beginning those who disbelieve in Allah ﷻ
and fight his way fight with the Prophet
ﷺ أَضَلَّ أَعْمَالَهُمْ their deeds have been set
astray they won't be accepted they didn't reach
their destination يوم القيامة for them to be
weighed and then go into account for the
person to benefit from them
بَالَهُمْ and those who believe in Allah ﷻ
and perform the deeds that he commanded them
to perform and they believed in Muhammad ﷺ
and what he brought is the truth from
Allah those people كَفَّرَ عَنْهُمْ سَيِّئَاتِهِمْ Allah ﷻ
will forgive their sins وَأَصْلَحَ بَالَهُمْ now this
is a figure of speech in the Arabic
language if you are to translate it it
will kind of fix their affairs no, it's
more than that it's make them functional that's
what it means الصلاح is for something to
be functional البال is the person's general state
and it's a word that is used quite
commonly in slang in Arabic Arab speaking people
know what the concept means in English it
means it makes them functional allows them to
achieve their goals which is what the surah
is trying to teach
because Allah ﷻ did not accept the deeds
of the disbelievers and accepted it from the
believers and allowed them to become functional and
fix their affairs for them the reason is
because the disbelievers they followed the falsehood and
the believers followed the righteousness from Allah ﷻ
and that is how Allah ﷻ gives these
examples He's given an example at the beginning
of the surah so understand now another name
of surah Muhammad is surah al-qital it's
called the surah of combat and you may
wonder how could that be and he is
the manifestation of mercy ﷺ the reason it's
called that is because the most difficult aspect
of following him ﷺ is in that it's
easy to follow someone if their orders are
all pretty simple and benign and don't really
require any sort of or any form of
sacrifice it's easy to follow but it's difficult
to follow someone when you're being asked to
put your life on the line and al
-qital it's not very common it's not very
often that a Muslim is asked to put
their life on the line and to sacrifice
themselves for the sake of Allah ﷻ but
that's the pinnacle of following him ﷺ that
is the highest level of actually following his
footsteps ﷺ in al-qital that's why the
ayah right after it the
ayah says if you're standing in front of
your enemies then fight with all your might
and when you win when you've come to
the point where you're winning then take captives
don't kill whoever is left from the enemy
army take them as as captives and after
that you either show them mercy and generosity
and send them back or they can pay
a certain amount of money and free themselves
until the war is over and then the
ayah says if Allah ﷻ wanted you to
be for you to actually be victorious upon
them really quickly for this all to end
immediately you could have but the point is
for you to put in the effort for
you to prove that you are capable of
following him ﷺ following the command of Allah
ﷻ even when it's extremely difficult and this
example here of combat is extremely difficult is
the surah that was named in his name
ﷺ and there is no other surah in
the Qur'an that was named in his
name ﷺ and one might think that if
he opens this surah to read it that
he will find the life of the Prophet
ﷺ a surah that tells us about his
life, his sufferings and his sacrifices but this
is not the case at all there is
no mention in the surah of Muhammad ﷺ
of the life of the Prophet ﷺ the
purpose of this surah is to shed light
upon us that following the Prophet ﷺ following
him ﷺ is necessary for the acceptance of
deeds and for the achievement of success that
the Prophet ﷺ with what he received from
his Lord this is what will help us
to accept our deeds sometimes we forget that
deeds without acceptance have no benefit the intention
is to judge and to do deeds and
to work hard but in the end when
the deed is finished you don't know if
it is accepted or not and what is
the benefit of deeds if it is not
accepted this is a very dangerous issue and
many of us forget it the key to
accepting deeds is to be in accordance with
his ﷺ sunnah to be following him ﷺ
in this deed and that what he ﷺ
brought and we followed him ﷺ In it
is the righteousness of our affair, and in
it is our interest, and that whatever other
affair we follow, therein is harm.
This is the focus of Surah Muhammad, peace
and blessings be upon him.
So the Surah begins, Those who disbelieved and
turned away from the way of Allah, their
deeds remained.
Their deeds remained, i.e. unacceptable, they did
not reach Allah.
And it did not reach to benefit them
on the Day of Resurrection.
And those who believed and did righteous deeds,
and believed in what was sent down to
Muhammad, And it is the truth from their
Lord.
He removed from them their misdeeds, and set
their minds straight.
Their deeds were accepted, and their sins were
forgiven, and their minds were set straight.
This righteousness of the mind is an important
matter.
That Allah, the Exalted be He, would set
things straight.
This is a word that the Arabs use
in their general language all the time.
That is, our Lord would calm the mind
and set things straight.
This righteousness of the mind means that all
your affairs are straight.
The straightness of all affairs is to set
your mind straight.
This is the indication at the beginning of
Surah Al-Muntaha Al-Ammiyah.
And then Surah Muhammad was named Surah Al
-Qitalah.
Why?
Because the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon
him, was always fighting?
No.
But because the most difficult thing to follow
in it, peace and blessings be upon him,
is the issue of fighting.
It is not difficult to follow the Prophet,
or to follow any person in his affair,
or in what he orders, if the orders
are simple and sound.
You don't need a lot, but if the
soul is required of you, then this is
the real following.
So in Surah Muhammad, he came with examples
of fighting.
As if the example is the most difficult
to follow, peace and blessings be upon him.
Did you follow him in his prayer?
Yes.
Did you follow him in his fasting?
Yes.
Did you follow him in his morals?
Yes.
All of this is a beautiful matter, but
can you follow him if you are required
to fight?
For example, if you are required to put
your soul on the line, this is a
difficult issue.
So he was given an example of it.
So when you meet those who disbelieve, strike
the neck.
So when you are angry with them, tighten
the seal.
So either a favor afterwards, or a sacrifice.
The issue is not the love of blood.
The verse itself says, if you win, take
him as a prisoner.
Either they favored them, that is, they fired
them like this to Allah.
Or as a sacrifice, he pays the money.
That is, and if Allah willed, he would
have won from them.
If Allah wanted to defeat them with himself,
he would have defeated them.
But why?
So that you may test each other.
So that we may be tested.
So that we may see Allah better than
ourselves.
So that we may see that we truly
follow him, peace and blessings be upon him.
This meaning is very important in the heart
of the surah.
As you move along in surah Muhammad, Allah
makes a few important gestures.
He reminds the
believers that Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala is
the one who takes care of their affairs.
And that those who don't believe in Allah
subhanahu wa ta'ala has no one taking
care of their affairs.
So if Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala commands
you to do this and that.
If the Prophet ﷺ brought us an ordained
way of life for us to follow in
his footsteps, it's because he cares for us.
It's because we are under their wings.
It's because we have someone who is looking
out for us.
And those who don't follow him ﷺ are
walking aimlessly.
And blindly.
And it's a reminder for us that this
is not...
We're not being told to do things just
for the sake of being told to do
something.
But because this is how you make sure
that Allah accepts your deeds and this is
how you actually achieve prosperity.
As you move along in the ayat, he
talks subhanahu wa ta'ala about the people
in Jannah and what they will find.
And at the end of that paragraph, he
says, He
reminds subhanahu wa ta'ala in this surah,
the basis of the way that the Prophet
ﷺ brought us.
And the concept of what Islam is actually
built upon.
Only twice in the Qur'an do you
find the full phrase of la ilaha illallah.
You'll find a lot of la ilaha illahut.
But la ilaha illallah is a full phrase.
It only comes twice.
Once in Saffat and once here in surah
Muhammad.
And this one here is very clear.
He says, Make sure that you have the
knowledge that la ilaha illallah.
That is the fact.
Because we're human and we're not perfect.
We need to continuously ask for forgiveness for
the mistakes that we make.
And Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala knows as
we move along our ups and our downs.
Because that's His way ﷺ.
In a surah that we're being commanded and
reminded the importance of following in His footsteps
in order for our deeds to be accepted,
in order for us to find prosperity.
You had to find in that surah a
very clear declaration of what His way of
life is.
His way of life is la ilaha illallah.
Unfortunately, in many ways it's turned into a
cliche.
It's something that we just say but we
don't think about.
It's extremely important.
This is what Islam is built upon.
It's built on the concept of la ilaha
illallah.
This is a very deep philosophical concept.
It's not just a word that you say.
It's extremely important to understand why we are
asked to say la ilaha illallah.
What that means to us as individuals and
as communities.
What it's supposed to mean to me as
a person living in this world.
What does it mean?
Learning to connect yourself to la ilaha illallah
is the journey of being a Muslim.
It's the journey of a lifetime.
And that's what He brought ﷺ.
That's why that ayah is right there in
the middle of the surah.
As the anchor verse within this whole surah.
How can one who has no one to
take care of him reach goodness?
Allah Almighty reminds us that He has commanded
us with commandments.
And He has given us responsibilities because He
is our Master.
And this is a good thing.
And this is a blessing that we have
a Master.
The infidel does not have a Master.
The infidel lives in his life and has
no Master.
You can almost feel the infidel's emptiness.
You can almost feel his emptiness, his fear,
his terror, his loneliness in this existence.
While you have a Master who takes care
of your affairs.
Yes, He commands you and may instruct you
in your life, but He is your Master.
And that's why these verses came after.
Not the ones who refuse them altogether, the
ones who act like they are, but not
really.
Kind of that 50-50 deal.
Muslim, but not really.
To whatever extent I'm comfortable.
When
the verse is very clear, and the concept
of combat is there, and you're required to
offer your life.
Again, this is very rare, it doesn't happen
very often.
At least, it hasn't happened for many, many
years, by the way.
And hopefully, inshallah, we live a lifetime where
we're not required to do that.
That's not something we ask for.
But learning how to deal with it is
key, and it's very important.
You see the ones who have diseases in
their hearts.
And you
look at them, and they're scared to death.
And they don't want this anymore, and they
run away.
What was better
for them would have been if they accepted
and followed His word ﷺ.
If they followed His command.
And said, وَقَوْلٌ مَّعْرُوفٌ And said the right
thing, which is سَمْعْ وَطَاعَ يَا رَسُلُ الله
That's what they should have done.
And then if things actually came...
Meaning, if they actually came
to a point where they had to fight,
then they do the right thing.
Meaning, this ayah is saying that a verse
could come and talk about combat.
And no combat was needed.
But just the concept can scare people away.
It's basically talking about you and I.
We're not required to do it, but we
have to accept that as something that may
be...
You may have to put your life for
the sake of Allah.
You don't have to right now, but you
should be able to say, Yes, Ya Rabb,
I will.
I will follow Him ﷺ.
I will do exactly as He said.
If needed.
And if the time comes, then go ahead.
If not, then you're fine.
It's a very important ayah.
Again, it's putting...
They say, put your money where your mouth
is.
If you're going to say something, mean it.
You're going to follow Him ﷺ, you have
to mean it.
Even if that means...
At some point.
It hasn't happened in my lifetime.
Probably won't.
InshaAllah it won't happen to anybody where you
actually have to put your life.
This is not a verse or a surah
telling us that we should go fight.
No, it's just teaching a concept.
If you believe in something, you have to
believe in it to the extent of what
that belief means.
Right after it, He says,
You
see, if you turn your back and you
refuse His way ﷺ, you don't follow Him.
What's going to happen?
You will ruin this earth.
And you'll ruin the relationships on
it as well.
The same concept again.
You follow Him.
Your matters will be fixed.
You'll become functional.
You don't.
This is the
natural consequence.
These are the natural consequences of following the
Prophet ﷺ and refusing to follow the Prophet.
You follow, then you get this.
You don't follow.
This will cause long term,
maybe not immediately, maybe even not on purpose.
But you turn your back to what He
taught ﷺ and to the righteousness that Allah
ﷻ sent.
Then what's going to happen is فَسَادْ فِي
We're going to corrupt the earth.
And we're going to ruin relationships.
It's a very key ayah.
Right
after that Allah ﷻ says, What's wrong with
you?
Don't you read the Qur'an?
Don't you see that everything I told you
to do in the Qur'an is for
your own benefit?
Aren't you reading?
Aren't you contemplating about the Qur'an?
Or is your heart locked?
You can't seem to see or hear or
understand what's being said.
Everything that you're told to do is for
your own benefit.
If you turn your back to this, it's
going to cause, there are going to be
consequences for all of us.
And the
surah doesn't talk about this in the first
place.
But the meaning is that you should be
prepared, if your soul is asked to do
something, to do it as Allah has commanded.
That's why he says,
If you refuse to do it, to cause
corruption in the earth and cut off your
wombs, it will lead to his refusal to
do it, and not following him, to corruption
in the earth and cutting off the wombs.
Don't you contemplate about the Qur'an?
The whole Qur'an, I mean, read it.
If you contemplate about it, you will see
that Allah has not commanded you anything but
to benefit you.
And He has not commanded you anything but
to correct your mind.
So why should we contemplate about His command?
If we contemplate about His command, this will
lead to the opposite, to corruption in the
earth and to cutting off the wombs.
This is an extremely important issue.
That's why, as the surah goes along, He
The
people who have diseases in their heart, to
act like they're following Him but not really
following Him.
Do they actually think that Allah subhanahu wa
ta'ala is not going to expose that?
Do they actually think that they were going
to be able to go through life under
the radar without being exposed?
Without that disease in the heart, that half
and half mentality of following Him ﷺ is
going to be exposed?
That's all gonna come out.
And you're going to be put
to the test until the people who actually
are willing to put their lives on the
line and those who won't is going to
be exposed.
Life will expose you.
I can guarantee you that.
I can guarantee you that life will expose
you.
Whatever you have hidden inside will come out.
It's just a matter of time.
So you just need to take a look
inside and make sure you know what you're
doing.
This surah is putting a mirror in front
of you.
His surah ﷺ, his surah it puts you
in front of the mirror.
You need to be honest with yourself.
If you follow him ﷺ, you follow him
properly.
You follow him to the extent of what
that means.
Even if it means at some point you
have to give your life.
And if that's not the case, then you
need to change what's inside.
You have to work on that.
We have to put in the efforts.
It's extremely important concept in the Qur'an
that we need to learn.
That's why the ayat right after, يَا أَيُّهَا
Oh, those who believe.
Obey Allah.
Obey His Prophet.
And don't corrupt your own
actions.
Don't ruin your deeds.
You come Yawm al-Qiyamah because you didn't
follow them properly and your deeds aren't accepted.
This is the scariest thing that can happen
to us Yawm al-Qiyamah.
That you actually come and none of our
deeds are accepted.
This is the nightmare of a mu'min.
The nightmare of a mu'min.
Imagining that his deeds for some reason aren't
going to be accepted.
How?
You follow him ﷺ in every way possible.
And even if you'll never actually offer your
life inside, if needed, I definitely will because
I follow him to that extent ﷺ.
At the end of the surah, he says,
See,
this life is just playing and distractions and
chilling.
That's how life is.
It's what we want to do most of
the time.
Most living things, if they don't have to
work, they won't.
But
if you believe in Allah ﷺ, and you
follow His path, and you show piety and
do what you're supposed to do.
Even though this life is simple,
He will give you reward beyond what you
can imagine.
And He won't ask you
for all of your money.
See, if He asks you
for all of your money, it's gonna be
too difficult.
You're going to become cheap, you're gonna say
no, and that's gonna expose you, and you're
gonna end up punished on the Day of
Resurrection.
I want you to think about what I
just said.
Allah ﷻ is saying, I never ordered you
to do anything that was not going to
benefit you.
I could have, but I didn't.
This life is simple, I could have told
you to do anything.
This life is just لَعِبٌ وَلَهُ There's really
nothing to it.
I could have ordered you to do anything.
I could have told you to do things
that made no sense to you, and were
not beneficial to you, and you would still
have to follow.
But I did not.
But I could have, إِن يَسْأَلْكُمُهُ If I
asked you for all your wealth, to give
all your money for the sake of Allah,
every cent of it, you wouldn't have done
it.
And that would have led to you being
punished on the Day of Resurrection, but He
didn't ask you for it.
The concept here is so deep and so
important.
Reminding us that nothing you were ordered to
do in terms of following him ﷺ is
harmful to you.
So why don't you follow?
He could have ordered you, the Prophet ﷺ
could have brought forward things that were harmful,
but he didn't.
He never told you to.
And you're asked to give some of
your money for the sake of Allah.
And still some of you
will hold back and not give.
And those
who hold back, and those who are cheap,
and those who refuse to give, they're depriving
themselves.
And we are in need of him every
moment.
It's the concept, will you follow?
See the two examples of followership for the
Prophet ﷺ in his surah.
Combat, which is extremely difficult, and the one
right after that in difficulty, money.
Money, it's hard.
It's hard to give away what you've worked
hard for.
Those are two examples.
Being reminded that if you don't follow him
properly, your deeds won't be accepted.
And if you don't follow him ﷺ, then
basically you're harming yourself.
You're going to be harmed by not following
him.
Maybe right now, but in the long run.
It's just like someone who eats too much
fried stuff.
At the moment he's eating, this person is
not being harmed.
Just give it 30 years.
And then he's a code study.
And the heart doesn't work anymore.
And then all these other...
It's a matter of time.
What we were ordered to do by the
Prophet ﷺ, his way of life, is the
way of life that offers us the most
benefit.
It's the way of life that we will
find prosperity in.
And we're reminded by that at the end
of the surah.
This amazing verse, اِن يَسْأَلْكُمُوا If I asked
you for your money, all of it, you
wouldn't have given it.
And that would have exposed you and you'd
be punished for it.
But I didn't.
I didn't do that.
Be thankful and follow.
The last part of the surah, the last
words in the surah.
He says, subhanahu wa ta'ala,
And if you refuse, after all this, you
still refuse to follow him ﷺ, you'll be
replaced.
It's very easy.
The fact that I sit here and speak
about the Qur'an is a blessing.
It's the biggest blessing.
It's not a blessing.
It's the biggest blessing that I will ever
experience in my life.
That I'm allowed to do this.
If I don't follow Allah ﷻ properly, He'll
replace me.
He doesn't need me to do this.
I'm not essential for Islam.
I'm not essential for anything.
I'm just a way that Allah ﷻ is
using to teach the Qur'an.
I'm happy to be the tool that He
uses.
Actually, it's the best thing that could ever
happen to anyone.
To be the tool that Allah will use
to teach His deen or to do any
khayr.
So if Allah ﷻ is using you for
khayr, then you hold on to that.
You hold on to that with all your
might.
Because all it takes is for you to
stop following Him ﷻ and for you to
be replaced.
And you'll bring someone else to do it.
And you'll be sitting on the sidelines.
You've lost the most valuable thing you had
in your life but you didn't know it
at the time and now it's too late.
And the person you'll
be replaced with won't be like you.
It's an extremely scary concept in the Qur
'an.
But it's in Surah Muhammad.
You follow him ﷺ.
So your deeds get accepted.
You follow him ﷺ.
So you achieve your goals.
And if you don't, you will be replaced.
No problem.
You'll be replaced.
Someone else will come and do it instead
of you.
And know that had you followed, you would
have found prosperity.
And if you don't follow, the harm is
yours.
I mean the fault's on you and the
harm comes back to you again.
It's a win-win and it's a lose
-lose when it comes to following him ﷺ.
We don't really follow him ﷺ.
We follow him in matters and we reject
matters.
We imagine from religion what we like.
And we'll test you until we know the
Mujahideen among you and the patient ones and
we test your news.
Then Allah says in the end of Surah
And if you turn away, he
will replace a people other than you.
It's a simple matter.
You don't want to follow the Prophet ﷺ.
Okay.
He will replace a people other than you.
If Allah has honored you with being able
to benefit a person by his name ﷺ.
This is because he loves you.
And this is because you followed the Prophet
ﷺ in something and he honored you.
So follow that.
Because if you disobey him ﷺ he will
replace you and he will bring a people
other than you.
Then you'll sit and regret the days you
were a servant of Allah ﷻ.
And this is the meaning of Surah Muhammad.
That was beneficial.
