In this cluster of surahs that we are
currently discussing, the fifth cluster of surahs in
the Qur'an, from Surah Al-Qasas spanning
down to Surah As-Sajdah, this group of
surahs talks about relationships.
Relationships are very important to human beings, they're
probably the most important aspect of our lives.
And Allah subhana wa ta'ala is looking
at the relationships that we have with different
things around us, different occurrences that are going
on within our vicinity.
And Surah Al-Qasas talks about the relationships
we have with others, how our stories and
their stories intertwine, and how we're supposed to
deal with their stories and our own stories,
and the lack of judgment that we should
be showing in the steadfastness of value.
Surah Al-Ankabut looks at our relationship with
the difficulties and calamities, misfortunes of life itself,
and how Allah subhana wa ta'ala is
expecting us to continue to perform Mujahidah and
to strive through all these difficulties and calamities.
Surah Al-Rum, which we talked about yesterday,
looks at the relationships that we have with
events around us, the laws of the universe
that Allah subhana wa ta'ala has put
in place and set in motion.
These laws that apply to the cosmos on
a bigger scale and apply to the world
or the globe and life itself, and how
these laws are a part of His creation
subhana wa ta'ala and our relationship with
it should be to continue to hold on
to our deen, to hold on to Islam,
and continue moving forward with that, as we
discussed yesterday.
And today we talk about Surah Luqman.
It's the relationship between generations, which is an
extremely important topic.
I was going to put Luqman and Sajdah
in one session, but I decided out of
the importance of the topic that maybe I
give it its own.
Luqman, alayhi as-salam wa radiyallahu anhu, you
can use both, it's not a problem.
There's only two people in the Quran that
have Surahs named after them that aren't Prophets.
If it's a name of a Surah, 90
% of the time it's going to be
a name of a Prophet, like Hud, alayhi
as-salam, and Nuh, alayhi as-salam, and
Muhammad, salallahu alayhi wa sallam.
But there are two people who aren't Prophets
who have Surahs named after them.
The first one is Maryam, alayhi as-salam,
who is the ultimate example of the struggle
of women all through time.
And then the second person is Luqman.
Luqman is not a Prophet, but what granted
him the status that put him in the
position where Allah Subh'anaHu Wa Ta-A
'la named a Surah in the Quran after
him, it was the fact that he was
a murabbi.
He was someone who raised generations, who raised
human beings, and doing that he required wisdom.
And those two concepts are basically what the
Surah talks about one way or the other.
The Surah of Al-Rum, which we talked
about yesterday, taught us about our relationship with
the Sunnah of Allah in His universe, and
His laws that He has placed in this
existence and in this life.
The events that take place around us, and
that affect us, and that we affect, and
that we have a duty towards.
And today I will talk about the Surah
of Luqman, Surah
Luqman, When
you look at the Surah, the way it
starts out, It says, It talks about the
book that is wise, the book that is
filled with wisdom, so it gives you a
hint of what it's going for right at
the beginning.
And there's an ayah right at the beginning
where Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala points to
the lack of wisdom in a very famous
verse that we That we use quite often
There are
people who will would rather spend their time
who prefer لهو الحديث Talking about the issues
or things that are useless that are completely
Insignificant and not important at all لِيُضِلَّ عَنْ
Using these These words that they're
that they're using using the topics that they
are talking about To take them to lead
them astray farther and farther away from Allah
subhanahu wa ta'ala بِغَيْرِ عِلْمٍ Lacking in
knowledge and lacking in experience وَيَتَّخِذَهَا هُزُوًّا And
they take it for granted and take it
as a joke And if you think about
it that is indeed in many ways The
definition of the recklessness of youth This is
what you know Youth that's how they go
by things They have that recklessness Where they
waste time saying things that are completely unimportant
They lead themselves astray with that They lack
knowledge they take things as mockery and as
jokes وَيَتَّخِذَهَا هُزُوًّا And the ayah itself is
talking about people who do that Consciously and
clearly and they're going to be punished But
when you look at it Allah subhanahu wa
ta'ala is giving us A sense of
what lack of wisdom does Lack of wisdom
causes that Causes us to waste time talking
about issues that are completely unimportant And insignificant
And it takes us away from Allah subhanahu
wa ta'ala And it lacks knowledge and
it turns important things into mockery Even when
we speak about religion Carelessly the same happens
When we fail to prioritize religious issues properly
And speak of what needs to be spoken
of And leave things that aren't necessarily important
Within the era that we live in Or
within the marhalah The stage of life Or
the stage of our development that we are
in And when we do that It shows
lack of knowledge And it turns important and
serious issues into mockery Which is something at
the beginning of the surah I think is
extremely important and significant And is worth looking
at Because the surah is going to talk
to us about How two generations are going
to interact And how much we need wisdom
And how much we need proper tarbiyah For
that to actually work The surah starts with
Those are the verses of the wise book
And it points to wisdom In the beginning
And then in the first page There is
a great and important verse And among the
people are those who buy talk To mislead
from the way of Allah without knowledge And
take it as a mockery And in this
there is a reference To the state of
the youth They are the youth And it
is their nature To waste their time On
the talk Which does not satisfy their hunger
And this causes them To mislead from the
way of Allah And to lack knowledge And
take important issues As a mockery And yes
the verses talk about the painful punishment For
those who do this And they are knowledgeable
But Allah speaks About the lack of wisdom
In the beginning of the surah And this
is what we will find From those who
do not have enough wisdom Whether they are
from our youth Or those who talk about
religion And want to educate the generations To
talk about unimportant religious issues At that moment
It is a talk It does not satisfy
hunger It does not affect people It is
not a place of interest For the youth
If you do not talk to them about
what concerns them They will turn away from
you If you talk about an unimportant issue
From religious issues It becomes a talk And
misleads people Because of the lack of knowledge
And this also causes People to take your
words as a mockery Although the words you
say May be important in another country And
it is from the words of Allah And
the words of His Messenger And must be
glorified But for the bad wisdom If you
choose what to talk about And when to
talk We will be misled by the words
of Allah This is an important issue You
should be aware of I
am sure you can relate To youth who
have been told Things about Islam It is
just the wrong thing At the wrong time
in the wrong way And it caused them
to lose For Islam to not be attractive
to them anymore And for them to lose
faith in it And to take it all
as mockery Because we did not know what
to talk about Even though all of Islam
is great But you have to choose what
and when and how You are going to
say things That is what wisdom is The
second page Allah SWT says Indeed we have
granted Luqman wisdom Wisdom is one of the
greatest Bounties of all in life If you
are granted wisdom You are granted khayran kathira
As Allah SWT says in other surahs We
gave him wisdom and told him Show gratitude
to Allah SWT For the wisdom that we
gave you By using it properly وَمَن يَشْكُرُ
And if you show gratitude to Allah
Then you do that for yourself And if
you don't then Allah SWT is not in
need of you To show gratitude But that
is the best thing to do When Allah
SWT grants you wisdom You use it for
the benefit of others And then the surah
starts to show us The relationship between generations
Tarbiyah, how he is going to raise his
son How he is going to use his
wisdom To speak to his son How children
should be treating their parents That's why before
we hear Luqman talk to his kid وَوَصَّيْنَا
Before we hear
him talk to his son We hear Allah
Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala saying And we've commanded
the human being To treat his parents in
the best of ways As his mother put
a lot of effort During the time she
was pregnant with him And then when she
took care of him as an infant As
they raised them And even if they push
you away from Islam Even if they're telling
you to lose your deen altogether Which is
an extreme example Then don't follow them And
don't listen to them if they say that
Be the best
companion for them in their lives Even if
they're saying that to you Even if they're
trying to send you away from Islam You
never stop being the best companion You can
be towards them within their lives And follow
the righteous path in your life This relationship
between generations is so important Because it affects
all of us really All the time There's
no exception to that And then we hear
Luqman Alayhi Salaam Explaining something to his son
So the second page starts with a Hadith
about Luqman He says
To thank Allah
So Luqman was given wisdom and
he was commanded to thank Allah And to
use it for the good of people And
he used it to raise his son He
used his wisdom But before we hear Luqman's
wisdom Allah Almighty in the verses لِلْإِنْسَانِ أَنْ
This mother who carried him
for two years To thank me and your
parents To me is the destination وَإِنْ جَاهَدَاكَ
So do not obey them and accompany
them in this world
So do not obey
but accompany them in this world لَا يَحِقُّ
But do accompany them in this world وَهَذِي
And this relationship between
the generations is important
In dealing with those other than
Then we hear Luqman Alayhi Salaam
talk So what does he say?
Listen to the points that he makes to
his son First one
In the first
Is giving advice in the most
tender of ways That's what وَعَظُ means It's
when you're saying something to someone You're trying
to give them advice But you've chosen the
most kind and gentle and tender manner to
actually deliver it So that's the first piece
of wisdom from Luqman Is that when he
spoke to his son He did it in
the most gentle and tender way possible And
he started by teaching him who God is
Who Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala is لا
First of
all, do not associate with Allah, my son
How many of us spend time explaining to
our children The importance of توحيد And that
Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala would never have
a شريك We take that for granted and
we move on But not actually taking time
to explain to our children Who Allah Subhanahu
Wa Ta'ala is Is a problem
tells you that you are in the midst
of a boulder Somewhere in the midst of
the sea Somewhere in the sky or in
the earth And Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala
can bring it And show it to you
and present it to you Because Allah Subhanahu
Wa Ta'ala is the subtle And He
is the most knowledgeable Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala
So first thing, he told his
son Who Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala is
Whatever rituals
are extremely important for them It's the only
ritual we have in the commands of Luqman
Because his son is probably not at this
point Where he can yet do Zakah or
do Hajj أَقِمِ الصَّلَاةِ Focusing on the rituals
that they definitely have to do Just tell
them the rituals they have to do Don't
start piling rituals on children Before they can
actually understand why they're doing them Give them
That's one
thing basically This is to participate in social
reform All the good aspects of society Continue
to encourage them and participate And all the
negative aspects of society Then you continue to
discourage and stay away from And help others
do the same This is social participation Allowing
your son and your daughter To participate in
their society In the positives and discouraging the
negatives Very important This is not da'wah
Da'wah is a different thing
Is social These are social
concepts They're not religious ones And they're important
to see the difference between the two وَصْبِرْ
The fourth Teaching them to
understand that life is difficult And life is
going to send them calamities And send them
misfortunes And that's how it's going to be
You have to learn to be perseverance And
to put up with it And to show
patience And to show perseverance And to strive
And then
he tells him وَلَا تُصَعِرْ خَدَّكَ لِلنَّاسِ وَلَا
a figure of speech And look how Luqman
uses these examples Uses language What he could
have said is Don't be arrogant Because that's
When you move your
cheek away Upwards in front of people He's
giving an example Because that's what They benefit
from visual images From examples And he's telling
Don't be arrogant He could have just said
And that would fix
both parts of the verse
Don't walk on the earth with
vanity But he's giving him visual images The
fifth part He's giving him issues of تَزْكِيَة
Telling him You have to watch out for
your heart يَبْنِي You have to watch out
for your vanity And for your arrogance You
can't look down on people You can't walk
around Full of yourself To the point where
you stop Thanking Allah
Manners When you speak
When you walk Walk with humility on the
earth And when you speak Speak in a
low voice Don't yell and scream إِنَّ أَنْكَرَ
The worst sound Or the
voice in the world Is the voice of
a donkey And I almost imagine that Luqman
عليه السلام said that Because he wanted to
put some humor In what he was telling
his son There's really not much of a
benefit Of this last piece of the verse
Except that That he's trying to relate to
him By using some humor Indeed the worst
of voices Is the voice of a donkey
So they're much more likely to understand And
to accept what the father is saying There's
a lot of wisdom In how Luqman عليه
السلام uses these words So if we look
at Luqman عليه السلام's advice to his son
He starts by introducing him to Allah The
first thing he advises him to do Is
to speak to the one in front of
you With compassion With love and mercy and
kindness So he spoke to him with mercy
and kindness And he said to him Don't
associate partners with Allah Then he introduced him
to his Lord That if you are the
weight of a grain of mustard And you
are in a rock Introduce him to his
Lord How many of us introduce their children
to Allah first And tell them that associating
partners with Allah is not allowed And that
Allah is one Who brings out the weight
of a grain of mustard From a rock
in the heavens and the earth That no
one else brings Introduce them to Allah The
second thing he told him to do Is
to pray And he didn't tell him to
recite a lot of poetry He just told
him to recite an important poem And not
to recite a lot of poetry And not
to recite a lot of poetry He just
told him to take it easy And to
take it as a hobby So the first
poem is enough for prayer At this age
He doesn't need to pray It is enough
for a poet to pray And enjoin what
is good and forbid what is evil Social
participation in encouraging good And in denying evil
in society And this is not a matter
of Dawah It is a matter of social
participation in spreading good And in denying evil
in societies And this is of utmost importance
That we push our children to social participation
In what is good and good And be
patient with what their education has taught them
That life is full of hardships Which only
Allah knows And patience and hard work is
the source of Islam And this is how
you will be You must learn to be
patient with yourself Before going out into the
world So that the first calamity he sees
Is outside your house And he doesn't treat
it well And he loses something of his
religion And maybe something of himself Because you
didn't look after him in your house You
protected him from all misfortunes And do not
show your cheek to the people And do
not walk in the earth in pleasure Do
not show your cheek, do not walk Do
not be arrogant, do not be full of
pride And look how he looks like him
He looks like his son You show your
cheek You walk in the earth in pleasure
He gives him something he can imagine Because
the youth love this And he commands him
with what is pure for himself Then he
commands him with etiquette And he means in
your walk And he gets angry with your
voice Walk a little and speak slowly Then
he says to him I see that the
voice of the donkey denies the voice And
I see that Luqman, peace be upon him
Looks like his son And maybe he mocks
him in speech So that he learns And
I see no benefit from this Except this
meaning From Luqman's wisdom So that he brings
the meaning closer to the youth When you
continue the surah You find Allah, subhanahu wa
ta'ala Does point out something That's a
bit interesting He says And when it is
said to them, Follow what Allah has revealed
They say, no, we follow What our fathers
did And even if it was Satan Who
called them to the torment of the Fire
Some people, you'll tell them How about you
follow the righteous path They'll say, no, we'll
follow What our forefathers did Not every father
Not every parent is You're not going to
listen To everything they say This is very
What I'm just saying is obviously Very controversial
Most parents don't want me To be saying
that But what Allah, subhanahu wa ta'ala
Is saying is that we have to Be
able to balance What we listen to What
we don't listen to And this is not
for children What I'm saying right now Are
for people, middle-aged people Who their parents
are In many ways Trying to get them
To stick to certain cultures Or traditions That
when they look at They agree this is
not The right tradition This is not the
right way of life I don't necessarily agree
with this But they're being Pressured by their
parents And the concept that's being used Is
that this is from Rida al-walideen Ubir
al-walideen That you listen to everything I
say Even though what you're being asked to
do You don't necessarily agree with Because it's
a tradition That should have been taken away
A long time ago And that's what the
ayah Is also kind of referring to That
we listen to our parents And our parents
give us advice And we accept that advice
But sometimes we have to also Have some
critical thinking skills That allow us to measure
And to weigh out What we're being told
I think that's for Kind of more middle
-aged people The ayah, surah Luqman has وَلَوْ
If all the trees on
earth Were turned into pens And all the
water in the seas And the oceans were
ink And you took those pens and that
ink And you wrote all the wisdom Of
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala with it Then
you would run out of trees And run
out of water Before you ran out of
the wisdom Of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala
And this is referring to The importance of
wisdom That there's always more to learn That
we can always have more experience And more
wisdom And specifically when we're dealing With generations
Specifically when as a son I'm dealing with
my parents Or as a parent I'm dealing
with my children It's extremely important Middle-aged
people are both For most cases You have
parents that you have to Perform bir towards
And you have children that you have to
Perform terbiya towards You need as much wisdom
As that can be written With the ink
of the seed On the Day of Judgment
But Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala Will offer
you that By reading the Quran and learning
Then after these great commandments From Luqman to
his son Our Lord points out a subtle
sign To an important meaning And when they're
told To follow what Allah has revealed They
say We follow what our fathers did Some
people follow their fathers In what they shouldn't
Their fathers shouldn't follow Not everything your father
And your mother order you to do You
follow it As the first verse explains And
if they strive you to associate This doesn't
mean That we underestimate The value of their
advice And some of them Rather Luqman teaches
us The importance of the advice Of our
fathers and their advice But you also have
to Think well about the issues So it's
not permissible for you To follow a culture
or a tradition That is bad or harmful
And you realize It's harmful to people Just
because your father And your mother ordered you
to So this is not wisdom And this
is not permissible So it's up to man
To balance things And to look at what
is ordered And it's not permissible For the
people to use The meanings of righteousness If
they order their children To do something That
Allah didn't order them to do It's not
permissible For you to choose What your son
will study In the university It's not permissible
For you to choose Where he will live
There are issues That it's not permissible For
you to use righteousness In asking for it
From your children And this is an important
issue And the verse And the surah And
if there were On earth A tree of
pens And the sea Extends it Seven seas
It's not permissible For the words of Allah
If we turned all the trees Into pens
And we used The water of the sea
As ink It's not permissible For the words
of Allah And the sea And the trees
It's not permissible So the wisdom of Allah
Doesn't end And this wisdom Is not permissible
We need it In dealing With each other
For generations Like a person In his middle
age Meaning He is a father Or a
mother Or a son Or a daughter So
you have And you need Unlimited wisdom To
deal With these trees And if we spoil
Dealing with these issues The communities Will be
corrupted And will fall At the end of
the surah You find the verse Where Allah
Says O people Fear your Lord And fear
One day A father Will not Reward his
son And a son Will not Reward his
father At all Indeed Allah's promise Is true
So don't deceive The life of this world
And don't deceive The pride of Allah O
people Be pious And fear Allah Subhanahu wa
ta'ala And fear the day A father
Can't benefit His son And a son Cannot
benefit His father Indeed The promise of Allah
Subhanahu wa ta'ala Is the truth See
in this dunya We have The The opportunity
For the father To benefit the son For
the older generation To take care Of the
younger generation And for the younger generation To
benefit And take care Of the older generation
We still have that opportunity If we choose
Not to use it If we choose For
there not to be Bir And for there
not to be Wa'ud And for there
not to be Proper communication And proper wisdom
In the way we're gonna deal With one
another A day will come Where you would
want To benefit But there is no way
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala Will not allow
it You want to benefit Your kid But
it's too late And he wants to benefit
you But it's too late That's why At
the end of the surah Inna allaha indahu
ilmus sa'a Wayunazzilul ghayth Waya'lamu maa
fil arhaam Wa maa taddari nafsum Maada taksibu
ghada Wa maa taddari nafsum Bi ayi ardin
tamoot Inna allaha alimun khabeer Allah subhanahu wa
ta'ala Counts the five things That he
knows And only he knows At the end
of it saying He is al-alim He
is the all-knowing He is al-khabeer
He is the most experienced And what is
wisdom Besides knowledge and experience Coming together What
is wisdom really Besides someone who has experience
And knowledge Experience without knowledge Is usually not
very beneficial And knowledge without experience Is raw
It's green It doesn't do You need experience
And knowledge together Which is what wisdom is
And he's telling you Subhanahu wa ta'ala
I have all the wisdom I know it
all So when I teach you How to
deal with them When I tell you What
you're supposed to be doing Listen to what
I'm saying Take it all Don't take the
parts you like Don't take the parts you
enjoy Of what I'm saying But take all
of it At the end of surah He's
warning us Subhanahu wa ta'ala To fear
the day When the father can't Benefit his
son And the son can't Benefit his father
You had an opportunity In this world To
benefit each other And to benefit each other
From each other And to benefit The older
generation From the younger generation And to benefit
The younger generation From the older generation And
to benefit him And take care of his
affairs But you lost So on the Day
of Resurrection Each generation wants To help the
other But Allah Will not This is His
promise The truth Subhanahu wa ta'ala The
last verse in surah Is a great verse
With the keys of the unseen He has
the knowledge of the Hour And he sends
down the unseen And he knows What's in
the wombs And what you know No one
knows These things Except Allah And He is
the Knowing The Expert And what is wisdom
My brothers Except knowledge And experience Because knowledge
Without experience And experience Without knowledge There is
a severe deficiency But if you combine Knowledge
and experience You get wisdom And Allah is
the Wise He who teaches us In dealing
with Generations One another He is the Wise
And He is the One Who we must
follow And He is our guide I hope
that was beneficial
