AI: Summary ©
Today, insha'Allah, I will talk about Surah
Al-Zukhruf, it will be the last Surah
of the month.
Tomorrow there will be a Dars, insha'Allah,
before Isha.
It will be basically a revision and kind
of an overview of a lot of what
happened throughout the month, insha'Allah.
So we will start with Surah Al-Zukhruf
and hopefully it is a nice place to
stop and next year insha'Allah, if Allah
subhanahu wa ta'ala grants us the opportunity
to participate in Ramadan again, we will continue
from Surah Al-Dukhan moving forward.
Surah Al-Zukhruf, the name is the Ordinance
or Decorations.
Zukhruf is a word that really what it
means is just something that is shiny, that
looks good.
That doesn't necessarily have value.
That's literally the usage of the word in
the Arabic language, kind of explaining it.
And within this cluster of Surahs from Ghafir
to Al-Ahqaf, the Hawamim, that talk about
pieces of advice and warnings along the way
as we perform da'wah and as we
carry the deen to others, Allah subhanahu wa
ta'ala gave us a number of pointers
in Surah Ghafir, talked about the importance of
entrusting in Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala and
performing da'wah while we take da'wah
to those who dispute Allah's signs.
He talked to us subhanahu wa ta'ala
in Fussilat about the importance of performing da
'wah through our behavior, even though we have
the best narrative and sometimes people won't listen
but they will respond to what they see,
the examples that we put forward.
So the surah taught us the importance of
surrounding ourselves with those who are like-minded
so that we can consult and we can
figure out the best way to perform da
'wah and take it to those who disagree
with us because the differences between people is
the norm of life.
That's how Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala created
it and division and differences are two different
things and they're not the same and we
need to acknowledge that.
Surah Al-Zukhruf starts, the rest of the
surahs, the next three, will talk about warnings,
will give us warnings, things that we should
watch out for, things that can be really
problematic for us.
And Surah Al-Zukhruf, from the name you
can kind of get a sense of what
it's talking about.
It's warning us from the logic, from the
materialistic logic, from deviating from the proper logic
of life, from proper rationale, from a proper
process of critical thinking to a logic that
is covered or that is dictated by materialism,
which is something, is why I think it's
a nice surah to kind of end with
because this is something that we really do
struggle with within the time that we live
in and the place that we live in
even.
So if you start the surah at the
beginning, you find Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala
You think that you're not included within
the reminders of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala
just because you're extravagant in the way that
you spend.
Al-Israaf is when you go overboard and
you're not thinking straight about how you're managing
your money, you're managing your time, you're managing
anything.
Al-Israaf is going overboard with anything and
being extravagant with the way you deal with
anything.
And within the surah of the Zuhr you'll
When
they're asked who created the cosmos and the
earth, who created you?
They will say Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala,
they believe that heaven is supreme power.
The problem is just because they can't see
him, because he's not reachable with their senses,
they need something that is.
They need something to associate, to affiliate themselves
with, something that they can relate to that
is materialistic which leads to a broken logic
and a broken way of thought.
That's why within these verses at the beginning
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala talks about his
What he's teaching
us here, subhanahu wa ta'ala, is he
created all these, he created the livestock and
boats and ships and other things so that
you may mount and it will take you
in different directions, you can travel using these
creations.
But when you do, remind yourself to say
that dua, exalted is the one who made
these, who created these creations for our service.
I mean there's an aspect of what we
deal with on a daily basis that is
beyond the materialistic perspective.
It's not just the materialism, there's more to
it.
So when you get into the car before
you move, yes it's 700 whatever of steel,
but also this is a blessing from Allah
subhanahu wa ta'ala that is allowing you
to move from one place to the other.
And you say that dua to remind yourself
that there's another dimension to all this, there's
more to it.
So surat al-Zukhruf, which is the last
surah that we'll talk about this month.
Tomorrow insha'Allah there's a lesson before Isha,
the topic won't change, but I'll summarize some
of the issues and talk about some of
the things.
But this is the last surah, I'll summarize
it or I'll talk about its focus with
you this year.
May Allah bring us back to the coming
year and we'll continue from the smoke until
what Allah wills.
So surat al-Zukhruf is a part of
a group of surahs, a group of surahs
from Ghafir to Al-Ahqaf, which talk about
advice and warnings in the path of da
'wah to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.
And our advice is in the first three
surahs.
In surah Ghafir, we pray to Allah subhanahu
wa ta'ala all the time and when
we carry the da'wah to those who
argue.
In surah Al-Fusilat, Allah warned us that
da'wah to work is stronger than da
'wah to speak.
Even if he had a clear Arabic Qur
'an.
Sometimes people don't hear it, but it's possible
for them to argue.
And in surah Al-Shura, Allah told us
that people are different.
This is the sunnah of the universe.
People are different.
And there's no problem with that.
As long as you surround yourself with those
who are like you and consult them and
work with them and treat others well, except
those who are unjust.
And this was a summary of surah Al
-Shura.
As for surah Al-Zukhruf, from its name,
Al-Zukhruf is all that draws attention or
all that draws attention from what is beautiful
in appearance, even if it is guaranteed otherwise.
Even if it is completely worthless.
As it is said, not all that shines
is gold.
Sometimes what shines is harmful.
It's the exact opposite of gold.
Al-Zukhruf talks about logic.
The material logic that can control the human
mind and ruin his way of thinking and
ruin his whole life.
And this surah, for us, in this era
that we live in and in this place
that we live in, is a very important
surah to understand and to reflect on its
meanings.
Surah Al-Zukhruf starts with Allah saying, "...shall
We then turn away from you the remembrance
of Allah, that you are a people who
spend?
Do you think that remembrance of Allah and
the Qur'an are of no importance to
you because you have spent in spending?
Spending is a way of life that covers
all aspects of it.
It covers money, time, emotions, delusions, games.
Spending in everything is wasted."
And Allah says, "...shall We then turn away
from you the remembrance of Allah, that you
are a people who spend?
Do you think that remembrance of Allah and
the Qur'an are of no importance to
you because you have spent in spending?
Spending is a way of life that covers
all aspects of it.
It covers money, time, emotions, games.
Spending is a way of life that covers
all aspects of it.
And Allah says, "...shall We then turn away
from you the remembrance of Allah, that
you are a people who spend?
Do you think that remembrance of Allah and
the Qur'an are of no importance to
you because The surah continues to show us
how the materialistic logic can be extremely detrimental.
And the example that is given is the
example of how the Arabs treated women, and
treated their daughters, and how they spoke of
it.
It's very...
The Arabs at the time would look down
on women.
They weren't happy when they had daughters.
If he's told he
has a daughter, he's upset.
He says, we want sons, Allah can have
the daughters.
Why?
Because to them, they measured the value of
the human being based on money.
That was the value.
Men at the time, they could make more
money.
More warriors, more people to fight in wars,
more people who can work.
And this is...
The Qur'an is...
The point of these verses are saying, this
is a horrible logic.
This is an unacceptable logic.
How could they think like this?
They're walking around arguing, women dress like this,
or they speak like this, or this is
their nature, so they're not helpful to us.
And Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala warns them,
this is going to be written, سَتُكْتَبُ, all
this is going to be written upon you.
And you're going to be asked about this,
This broken logic, this materialistic approach
to life, it makes the value of genders
unequal.
We still see that today, regardless of what
we think has changed, and a lot has
changed obviously, but not everything.
And not as much as we hope, or
not as much as we sometimes imagine has
changed.
Still this materialistic culture and civilization that we
live amongst, this culture of consumerism that we're
a part of, has mistreated women.
And sometimes people don't want to see it,
but they're still there.
They're still being valued based on an appearance.
They're being pressured to look a certain way,
and to walk a certain way, and to
dress a certain way.
And that their value is somehow attached to
that.
And it's not enough that she has something
to say that is intelligent and important, and
people will benefit from listening to it.
No, she has to look a certain way,
and that's not fair, because that's materialistic.
And when they talk about Islam, giving a
dress code, the point of the dress code
in Islam, the whole point of hijab, is
to force the society not to look at
what, to stare at the woman, but to
listen what she has to say.
To judge her based on her character, not
based on her appearance, because it's concealed.
She's not allowing you to, you don't have
access to her appearance.
She's concealed that you have to listen to
what she's gonna say, you have to judge
her based on character, which is fair.
And it's unfair when, it's just not proper.
But of course, we refuse to look at
it like that, look at it like that,
because there's so many shahawat, so much self
-desire is involved in this process, and we'll
play around with how this is going to
be presented.
But if a Muslim woman takes time to
think about these things, Islam is really trying
to liberate society, and liberate women, and offer
them a fair chance in life, and offer
them justice, and how society is gonna deal
with them and treat them.
What we live today, it doesn't, it doesn't,
just because people can dress however they want
to do, that doesn't mean that they're liberated.
This is a materialistic society, that the pressure
that is put within it upon women to
dress a certain way, and act a certain
way, is just so unfair.
And I see it in my Muslim sisters,
younger sisters all the day, and it's very
sad.
It's just not fair.
And that's the logic that this surah talks
about.
He continues, subhanahu wa ta'ala, to give
us more examples.
When the disbelievers are told, or what disbelievers
say, when the Prophet ﷺ asks them to
Allah,
if He wanted us not to worship these
things, He wouldn't worship it.
That's the logic.
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala can do anything.
He can, if He wants to make me
a better Muslim, He can do it.
If He wants me to stop worshiping a
Salam, He can just stop me from doing
it.
They don't wanna change anything.
Why don't they wanna change anything?
The ayat tell us,
Every time we send a group of people,
a Prophet, المترف, what that means, those who
are given a lot of wealth.
Those who have a lot of money.
They don't see any reason to change.
Why would they change?
Why would they need to change?
They have everything they need.
Everything they want is right there.
Why would they change?
They won't.
المترفون, it's in the Qur'an many times,
but here it's very specific.
The concept of when you're overindulged and you're
privileged.
When we're privileged, we stop wanting to make
a difference or make a change or look
at ourselves and look at what needs to...
That's why Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى will throw
obstacles in our lives.
So that we take a moment and we
look back and we think and we reconsider
our approach to life in general.
That's why He says سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى could
write the verse after,
indulged them, I gave them a lot of
provision, a lot of wealth.
Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى is saying, that's the
problem.
The problem with them is not that they
disbelieve, it's that because they just have too
much.
Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى was too generous with
them, gave them too much money.
More than what they needed.
So now they don't have any...
There's no motivation, there's no reason for them
to even think of changing.
Which is a scary thing because we're in
a similar position.
The
verses continue and gives another example of how
they set up with the Prophet ﷺ.
Why wasn't this Qur'an revealed
to one of the great men of the
two great cities?
Mecca and Al-Ta'if.
The great Arab tribes.
Why wasn't the Qur'an revealed to one
of the great nobles?
The Prophet ﷺ is not one of the
great nobles.
Not by their materialistic logic he wasn't.
He didn't have a lot of money ﷺ.
He didn't have a lot of power.
He wasn't rich.
This is the logic.
So Allah ﷻ answers them.
But they're going to
decide now who's worthy of Allah's mercy and
who's not.
This is how far you've gone with this
broken logic.
Allah ﷻ is saying, I'm the one who
gave you this wealth.
And I gave different people different amounts of
wealth so that you can use one another.
سُخْرِيَّ doesn't mean mockery.
It means usage.
Meaning we can benefit from one another.
The rich can benefit from the poor.
The poor can benefit from the rich.
So we're forced to have social relationships.
This is not so that you can say,
well this person is worthy and this person
isn't.
The mercy of
your Lord, the compassion of your Lord is
better than whatever they think they have, which
is nothing.
It's just wealth.
It's this broken logic.
The logic of materialism.
It's deadly.
Allah, it's deadly.
The ayahs continue.
And He says, subhanahu wa ta'ala, in
a very ground-breaking ayah,
And
all the decorations, and all the nice shiny
things that they want.
Here, take it.
You want dunya?
Here, take it all.
It's worthless.
It's just the
ending, the ending leisures of dunya.
It'll be done very soon.
It's akhira that's going to stay.
It'll be for the muttaqeen.
You want zukhruf?
Take zukhruf.
It's worthless.
This logic is dead.
But subhanahu wa ta'ala says, I didn't
give everybody this.
Because if I did, they would never have
a reason to look back again.
And everyone would just indulge in dunya.
He doesn't want us to do that, subhanahu
wa ta'ala.
He doesn't want us to fall under the
grasp of this dead way of thought.
Of this very harmful, harmful way of life.
دخوذها He talks سبحانه وتعالى about why وَمَن
يَعْشُوا عَن ذِكْرِ الرَّحْمَنِ يَعْشُوا is when you
can't see anymore those who blind themselves they
can't see it they blind themselves to the
remembrance of Allah what's blinding them?
this materialism that they live in it blinds
us we don't know what we're seeing anymore
nothing's ever enough nothing, nothing's enough how many
parents are tired of their children asking everyday
for something new nothing's enough they're not happy
they're not happy even though they have ten
times more than they had when they grew
up because it's this materialistic environment that we're
growing up in that is so harmful to
all of us it's harming the kids it's
harming us we're losing our way as Muslims
we're losing our way wallah we are the
way we're behaving today is so everything is
about money everything all we do is all
we do is try to make more money
and all the institutions do is try to
get more money and just everything is money
this is not how we're supposed to live
the value is not based on money you
need enough of it to get by and
that's all you need everything else is it
blinds us the verse is so clear in
the Qur'an he tells the Prophet you
can't make the deaf hear you can't get
the people who are blind to see they
don't want to see they can't hear materialism
has completely blunted their senses and he says
oh Muhammad hold on to what was revealed
to you hold on tight don't let go
don't lose what you have to this way
of life this broken logic don't lose it
we only want money we collect more money
and we collect what we need and we
buy and the institutions only want to collect
money and everyone is looking for money and
it's like there's no value in life except
for money and money has no value except
for what you need enough of it all
you need is to eat and drink and
to wear and the rest has no value
there's value in people there's value in worship
there's value in good if you have money
the value of money is to spend it
on those who don't have money so hold
on to what was revealed to you hold
on don't let this broken logic overpower you
hold on hold on to the prophetic gift
hold on to it the next story we
have in the surah is the story of
Firaun of course Firaun is all over the
Quran we know that very clearly we know
that well Firaun here in this ayah in
this story will say something specific that shows
you Allah Subh'anaHu Wa Ta-A'la
is showing us this materialistic way of thought
that caused Firaun to lose everything look what
قَوْمِ he calls upon his people and says
O my people أَلَيْسَ لِي مُلْكُ مِصْرٍ Musa
is saying all these weird things but why
are you listening to Musa don't I own
Egypt I'm the king of Egypt
تَجْرِي مِن تَحْتِي and the rivers they run
under me that's how powerful how much money
هُوَ مَهِينٌ وَلَا يَكَادُ يُبِينُ am I not
better than this disgraced person he's talking about
Musa عَلَيْهِ الصَّلَاةُ وَالسَّلَامُ كَلِيمُ اللَّهُ he has
no strength he has no power he has
Musa had difficulty
in public speaking he wasn't a great public
speaker he struggled with that it's an apparent
thing it doesn't say anything about what's in
his heart it doesn't say anything about Musa's
character at all it's just something Fir'aun
is asking people see look, this is the
logic forget about what he's saying look at
me I am rich, I am powerful and
he is not and he you should follow
me فَاسْتَخَفَّ قَوْمَهُ so he told them stupid
things and they were stupid enough to listen
I'm sorry to use the word but that's
what that's really what استخفاف means he said
things that are unintelligible and they listened to
it and they followed him
قَوْمًا فَاسِقِينَ they made a choice to do
that they made a choice to follow him
even though he was saying he was using
dead logic logic that no one accepts wallahi,
children don't accept this logic but sometimes sometimes
زُخْرُف it's shiny it's nice so we can
be fooled by it وَلَيَّ أَذُبُ اللَّهِ that's
why the example right after it it was
Isa why Isa?
Isa alayhis salam is the symbolism of زُهِد
and حِكْمَة he's a symbol of wisdom and
simplicity of the way of life alayhis salam
so he's talking about see the difference of
true value Isa alayhis salam from every probably
the most famous figure in the world Jesus
peace be upon him and he he walked
away he walked into this world and out
of it owning nothing no possessions at all

the end of it he says أَلْأَخِلَّأُ يَوْمَئِذٍ
القيامة are enemies why?
because they are best friends based on materialism
they are materialistic friends أصحاب مصالح as they
say we're friends based on benefits not based
on love true love and true empathy and
through the grace of Allah no, it was
done just based on I benefit from him
he benefits from me so we're friends يوم
القيامة they're going to be enemies الأخلاء يوم
ends with him saying
can prove to me through proper logic that
Allah سبحانه وتعالى somehow as a son I
will be the first one to follow I'll
be the first one to worship the son
but if you can't prove it if your
logic is dead if you're using this materialistic
logic that does not follow the proper critical
thinking processes then you have to change you
have to change the surah ends by saying
and walk away فَسَوْفَ يَعْلَمُونَ they'll figure it
out if they're blinded by this materialism leave
them alone follow the proper logic the deen
is based on proper logic on critical thinking
as Muslims we need to remember that as
well please that عقل ومنطق this is a
part of the deen this is what the
deen was built on the surah ends by
الْعَابِدِينَ if I can prove the correct logic
and the correct thinking I am the son
of the All-Merciful and I'll be the
first one to worship him but your materialistic
logic is a wrong logic
عَنْهُمْ وَقُلْ سَلَامًا فَسَوْفَ يَعْلَمُونَ and we have
to remember that the deen is based on
the mind and the correct logic and the
I hope that was beneficial
