Bismillah ar-Rahman ar-Rahim, walhamdulillahi rabbil alameen,
Allahumma salli wa sallim wa barak ala nabiyyina
wa habibina Muhammadin wa ala alihi wa sahbihi
ajma'in wa ba'd.
Tonight insha'Allah I will talk about Surat
Ash-Shura, within the cluster of Surahs from
Ghafir until Al-Ahqaf which are called Al
-Hawamim, and talk about, give us pieces of
advice and warnings on our journey of Dawah
to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala in serving
his deen.
Before I get into that, tonight is the
27th night of Ramadan, and it's a very
special night to most people, to most Muslims
around the world, and it's definitely worth putting
in the extra effort in worship.
I personally am not a fan of focusing
on one night throughout the year, but who
am I to discourage someone who wants to
increase their worship in a certain night.
This is a beautiful night, and a blessed
night, and I ask Allah subhanahu wa ta
'ala to accept all of our acts of
worship, ameen.
Surat Ash-Shura, Surat Fusrat talked about the
importance of performing Dawah through behaviours, because some
people won't listen, no matter how clear what
you're saying is, some people just won't listen.
Surat Ghafir talked about performing Dawah by entrusting
in Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, making a
lot of Du'as, strengthening your relationship with
him, and taking Dawah to those who disagree,
or dispute Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala's signs.
Surat Ash-Shura looks at Dawah, or gives
us a tip regarding Dawah that's extremely beneficial,
very important, very relevant to be honest.
It talks about differences, Surat Ash-Shura tells
us that differences between people is a part
of life, this is how Allah subhanahu wa
ta'ala created the world, people are different,
people will differ, and that's just how it
is.
These differences need to be acknowledged, and they
need to be dealt with properly.
And as a Muslim who's performing Dawah, there
are ways to deal with those who differ
with you, and then there are ways to
deal with those who don't.
The way we deal with those who don't
differ with us is that we surround ourselves
with people who are like-minded, and we
move forward by performing Shura, which is the
name of the Surah, which is consultation.
You can say that there are a lot
of alignments with the concept of democracy in
its initial form, but it's more consultation, it's
a bit different, I guess, from an Islamic
perspective, it's a bit different in the way
that it's practiced.
And Surat Ash-Shura is telling us this,
this is this message, that as a Muslim,
you surround yourself with people who are like
-minded, and you consult them, and you move
forward with your Dawah, acknowledging that people are
different, and people will differ, and they have
different ideas, and different ideologies, and different references.
As a Muslim, you hold on to your
references, you're proud of them, you surround yourself
with people who are like-minded, and you
consult them, and you work with them, and
you perform Dawah to those who differ from
you.
And that's basically what Surat Ash-Shura talks
about, and it has a certain depth to
it that I think is very relevant to
our situation today as Muslims around the world,
really.
The Surah begins, right at the beginning of
it, at the first page,
If he wanted, if he willed,
he would have made the nation of the
human race, the human race, one nation, meaning
everyone would be the same.
Everyone would be extremely similar, there would be
no differences at all.
And the ayah, two ayahs after, وَمَا اخْتَلَفْتُمْ
And when
you differ upon something, the ruling should go
back to Allah, subhanahu wa ta'ala.
It should.
A lot of people don't do it, but
that's what he's saying, subhanahu wa ta'ala.
When you differ, you should take back, you
should see what is Allah, subhanahu wa ta
'ala, is ruling on this.
When we dispute or we find differences amongst
each other regarding certain issues.
He takes the explanation of differences one step
forward, and then he tells us, subhanahu wa
Since we're talking
about differences and how you differ, well the
biggest difference there is, is the difference that
we have with Allah, subhanahu wa ta'ala,
we're very different.
We're not the same.
Nothing is similar to Him,
subhanahu wa ta'ala.
There's nothing but differences between us and Allah,
subhanahu wa ta'ala, because any similarities that
we see are only figurative.
They're not real.
Because Allah, subhanahu wa ta'ala, is the
Supreme Being, jalla jalaluhu, of the universe, and
we are creations, we're very simple.
We're very weak in essence.
So Allah, subhanahu wa ta'ala, begins the
surah by talking about these differences, by the
fact that the humans are different and that
they will differ, and that we're very different
from Him, subhanahu wa ta'ala.
Surah Al-Shura, the third surah in this
group of surahs that we're talking about, from
Ghafir to Al-Aqaf, Surah Al-Hawamim, are
surahs that give us advice and warnings in
the path of our call to Allah.
Surah Ghafir taught us how to call to
Allah, subhanahu wa ta'ala, by holding fast
to supplication and supplication.
We take the call to those who dispute.
Surah Al-Fussilah talks about the call to
action.
Many people won't listen, even if what you
say is clear and obvious.
Their call to action will be much louder.
Today, Surah Al-Shura talks about the sunnah
of difference in the creation of Allah.
Allah, subhanahu wa ta'ala, created this universe
and created people who are different.
The sunnah of life is the difference.
People are different from each other.
There are no two identical people.
People are different from each other.
As Muslims, we have to have a certain
way of dealing with this difference.
We have to surround ourselves with people who
are identical to us.
We have to discuss with them and work
with them to push the wheel forward.
We have to hold fast to our supplications
and call to Allah with those who are
different from us.
There is a way to deal with those
who are different from us.
This is an important issue.
The surah starts with, If Allah had willed,
He would have made them one nation.
He, subhanahu wa ta'ala, did not want
to make us one nation.
This is the will of Allah.
It is not a mistake.
No, no, no.
He, subhanahu wa ta'ala, created us like
this.
Nations, peoples, and tribes.
He did not create us as one nation.
But he explains, If you are different from
one another, then it is up to Allah
to judge you.
But if you are different from one another,
then it is up to Allah to judge
you.
You have to look at what Allah's judgment
is in this matter.
Then he talks about a greater difference.
He is our difference from Him.
There is nothing like Him.
He is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing.
We, as human beings, are different from our
Lord.
In fact, He is different from us, subhanahu
wa ta'ala.
So any similarity between us is a metaphor.
It is not real.
We can never be like Allah with one
of His creations.
Nor can we be like one of His
creations with Him, subhanahu wa ta'ala.
He tells us that we are different by
nature.
Humans are different from each other by nature.
By nature.
By creation.
He wanted that.
And if we are different, then it is
up to Him to judge us.
And if we are different, then it is
up to Him to judge us.
He continues, subhanahu wa ta'ala.
And he tells us the story of religion.
These are very interesting.
Three verses in the second page of Surah
Tashrur are extremely interesting.
decreed for you from this religion, what He
told Nuh alayhi salam, and what He told
you, Ya Muhammad, and what He told Ibrahim
and Musa and Isa before you, to practice
this religion properly, and do not differ regarding
the religion.
Do not cause Tafarruq.
Now, Tafarruq is different than Ikhtilaf.
Ikhtilaf symbolizes the natural differences that exist between
people.
People look differently, they dress differently, they think
differently, they have different opinions.
Tafarruq is when we divide.
And do not divide.
Do not divide your nation.
That's why the ayah after it, وَمَا تَفَرَّقُوا
And they only divided themselves
after Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala gave them
knowledge.
They used the knowledge that they were given
by Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.
Instead of using that knowledge to keep people
together, they used it to divide.
Division, تفرق, and اختلاف, differences are not the
same thing.
They're different.
Which is the importance of understanding Surah Ash
-Shura.
The third ayah, he says فَلِذَالِكَ And because
of that, because of the fact that people
are different in nature, And Allah subhanahu wa
ta'ala gave the same teachings to Nuh,
Ibrahim, Musa, Isa, and Muhammad salallahu alayhi wa
sallam.
Telling them, perform the religion and do not
divide.
And they divided, people divided anyway.
So what your
job to do is perform da'wah.
And walk the straight path, as you were
told.
Don't follow the desires and
agendas of others.
And say, I believe in the
book that Allah revealed.
All the books that Allah has revealed, jalla
jalaluhu, to his messengers.
I was commanded to be
righteous and to be fair amongst people when
I judge.
There is no reason
for us to divide.
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala
will gather us يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَ وَإِلَيْهِ الْمَصِيرَ And
we will all return to him.
This ayah gives us a way of how
to go by people around us.
How to perform da'wah regarding people who
are very different around us.
Very clear.
And the way the ayah is, it's a
beautiful ayah because it's cut down into small
segments.
It's one long ayah, but it's cut down.
It's like every segment is giving us an
extra piece to the puzzle of figuring out
how we're going to go by these things.
The ayahs that you read in Surah Al
-Shura Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala tells us
about the whole story of religion.
Very beautiful ayahs.
It summarizes the whole matter for us.
All Prophets, Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala,
have a law of their own.
What is it, O Lord?
To establish religion.
To apply Allah's law and His command.
And to abstain from what He has forbidden.
And to carry the message as He has
commanded.
And not to be divided in it.
It does not cause division.
And to be divided is two distinct matters.
To be divided is the Sunnah of life.
People differ in their forms, their appearances, their
clothes, their tongues, their colors, and their opinions.
To be divided is a different matter.
To be divided is to refuse to work
with others.
To be divided is to refuse to listen
to others.
It is to refuse to deal with others.
It is to be hostile to others.
This is to be divided.
But to be divided is the Sunnah of
life.
Surah Al-Shura is important.
It tells us about a matter that we
experience daily in our societies and in the
world.
And not to be divided in it.
The verse after it says, And they did
not differ except after knowledge had come to
them, out of indifference to one another.
But when their Prophets died, people differed when
knowledge came to them, out of indifference, hostility,
injustice, and error.
They should not have differed.
The third verse commands us to follow orders.
Listen to the order.
Therefore, pray.
Complete your supplication to Allah.
And be upright as you have been commanded.
Keep upright in your conduct.
And do not follow their whims.
And do not pay attention to those who
have special agendas and who have their own
whims.
Do not listen to them.
Remain upright.
And say, I believe in what Allah has
revealed of the Book.
I believe in all the Books of Allah.
From Noah, peace be upon him, to Muhammad,
peace be upon him.
And I have been commanded to be just
among you.
Allah is our Lord and your Lord.
There is no argument between us and you.
Allah unites us.
And to Him is the destination.
The verse teaches us how to deal with
religion.
All of it with others.
And how to carry out supplication.
And how to look at them.
They do their deeds.
And we do ours.
And we supplicate.
And we are upright.
And we do not follow our whims.
And we are just among people.
And there is no need to form animosities.
And to be divided with others.
The verses continue.
It gives us more examples of differences.
Whoever wants the harvest of the hereafter, We
give to him in his harvest.
And whoever wants the harvest of this world,
We give to him from it.
And he does not have a share in
the hereafter.
Some people will want the hereafter.
They will plant their seeds hoping to benefit
from the fruits on the Day of Judgment.
And others will plant the seeds they want
to benefit from it now.
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala will give each
what they are looking for.
But those who want to benefit in dunya
will not find the benefits on the Day
of Judgment.
They won't find their fruits on the Day
of Judgment.
It's a difference.
And they can stick to it.
The ayahs continue.
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala tells the Prophet
ﷺ how to deal.
Giving him an idea of how to deal
with those who are different.
Say, I don't ask for any form
of payback.
I'm not asking to be given a salary.
I'm not asking for your wealth.
All I'm asking for in this relation,
For there to be some respect
of kinship.
Of the fact that they were related.
Reminding yourselves whether the Prophet ﷺ is speaking
to Quraysh who he's actually a part of.
Or us speaking to others.
Reminding them and ourselves that we're a part
of one big family here.
That everyone who walks the earth is one
of the sons and daughters of Adam and
Eve ﷺ.
And there are kinship relationships that need to
be observed.
That's all we're asking for.
For there to be a certain level of
respect amongst people.
So the verses continue after that.
So Allah Almighty points out once again that
we're different.
Even in our intentions.
Even in what we want.
Whoever wants the harvest of the hereafter, we
give it to him.
And whoever wants the harvest of this world,
we give it to him.
Not all people in this world want to
harvest in the hereafter.
Some people plant in this world and want
to harvest in this world.
And Allah says, we give these people what
they want.
And we give these people what they want.
But be careful.
If you want your harvest in this world,
you might not find it in the hereafter.
And this is a difference between people.
And we can't force people to do anything.
But this is the reality.
Allah Almighty tells the Prophet, peace and blessings
be upon him, how to deal with those
who are different from him.
We don't ask for a reward
for Dawah unless it is in the love
of our relatives.
The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him,
when he talked to Quraish about this, he
was a part of Quraish.
He was a part of Quraish.
And most of the people were related to
Quraish.
And he didn't ask them for money.
He asked them to respect the love of
their relatives.
There is mercy that we can reach.
And our talk with non-Muslims is the
same.
We are all the children of Adam and
Eve.
We are all a part of one family.
We should have respect for the existing mercy.
And of course, the Prophet, peace and blessings
be upon him, said, We don't ask for
a reward for Dawah unless it is in
the love of our relatives.
And we should have respect for the family
of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon
him.
And this is a correct and beautiful meaning.
We should pay more attention to it than
we do now.
The verses continue.
And Allah, subhanahu wa ta'ala, starts to
state some of the attributes of the believers
who are going to continue to perform Dawah
in a proper manner.
And to surround themselves with people who have
certain attributes.
It's a very important ayat.
So whatever you're given
in this life is just the enjoyment or
the simple joys of this worldly life.
But what Allah, subhanahu wa ta'ala, has
and what He's keeping for us is better.
So He starts counting.
He talks about eight things,
subhanahu wa ta'ala.
As Muslims, as we observe the differences amongst
people, as we respect those differences, as we
understand that that's Allah's will for people to
be different, observing that we don't increase the
division, that we try to bring people together
while observing the fact that not everyone is
going to agree and there's going to be
differences.
He also, subhanahu wa ta'ala, tells us
who we should surround ourselves with.
If our da'wah is going to prosper,
if it's going to become fruitful, then we
have to surround ourselves with people who are
like-minded.
What are the attributes we should be looking
for?
So he tells us, First of all, you
have to be believers.
Obviously, you can't perform da'wah with someone
who doesn't have the same ideology as you
do, and doesn't share your creed.
And they understand the concept
of توكل.
They understand what it means to exhaust all
resources in dunya to achieve your goal while
depending fully on Allah, subhanahu wa ta'ala.
Understanding that concept.
An issue of
ethics.
An issue of sexual ethics.
Understanding that the إثم and فواحش, that these
type of sins are things that can destroy
societies, that can harm our ability to work
together.
And observing that as Muslims and people of
Abrahamic faiths in general, we have a different
outlook regarding these type of behaviors than those
who don't.
This is a very important point in Islam,
to observe and understand.
We're raising our kids in a society that
differs with us on an extremely important point.
On something that is very, very harmful and
dangerous.
And we observe that people are different and
we respect that.
But it's our job to surround ourselves with
people who agree with us on certain things
so we can work together.
And to raise our kids to understand that
this is a point that you must be
proud of, that you must hold on to.
To stay away from
the big aspects of Haram, especially like Zina
and Khamr.
These big things and harm of others.
These are big differences that we have with
others.
The point after that.
And when they get
angry, they're capable, when someone harms them, they're
capable of forgiveness.
They're people who are capable of forgiving for
others when they are harmed.
Listen to these attributes.
They believe, they perform Tawakkul.
They stay away from the large sins, the
Kaba'ir.
They're capable of forgiveness when they are hurt.
They've responded
to Allah, meaning they've accepted.
They've accepted the word of Allah
and they perform their prayers.
And they perform consultation amongst
each other.
The Prophet ﷺ did this.
This is a Makki surah, obviously.
All the Hawameem are Makki surahs.
And the concept of surah was presented to
him ﷺ during his time in Mecca.
He would practice it much more clearly during
his time in Medina.
But the concept was presented way early on
in Mecca.
It's not something that people were accustomed to.
Leaders at that time in Arabia, they had
ultimate autonomy and authority.
They would be able to say whatever they
wanted to say.
And people would follow.
And people did not have reason or rights
to actually object.
And this is, of course, something that's very
dangerous.
We know that today.
That's not something that is encouraged.
And the outcomes are always catastrophic when that's
the way of doing it.
The Prophet ﷺ, whenever he was
going to make a decision for Medina, he
had people who he consulted with.
And he sometimes would consult publicly from the
mimbar.
Sometimes he would put people together and ask
Tell me, what
should I do?
Here's the situation.
Here are some options.
What should we do?
And people would come up and come forward
with ideas.
And those ideas, and the fact that they
came up with these ideas, are some of
the reasons that the Muslims were actually able
to survive in certain examples like the Battle
of the Trench.
The digging of the trench that saved them
was through consultation.
And Salman gave the piece of
advice.
Consulting those who are similar
to you.
Why?
Because if we have the same reference, if
we're similar in terms of our iman, if
we're similar in terms of our behaviors, of
our tawakkul, of our ethics, then when we
consult with these people, we're gonna be able
to achieve our goals quicker.
When you consult with people who are very
different than you, it's going to end up
just a continuous argument.
If you're putting together a group of shura,
a group of people to consult with, and
you figure out somewhere down the line that
we are very different.
It's okay to be different.
It's not a problem.
It's climbing the spine.
What we should do is not divide.
Meaning, we should not start animosities.
It's okay for that group to say, okay,
we're gonna go our separate ways in terms
of working for da'wah, because we're different.
I need people who are similar or like
-minded so that we can actually achieve our
goals.
You will work on one side, we work
on this side.
We'll continue to work in the same direction.
Division is only if we become enemies and
start working against each other.
That's division.
Differences is fine.
For there to be more than one group
working towards similar goals is not an issue.
It's not a problem.
And those who
are oppressed, they are capable of fighting back.
They are capable of defending themselves again and
saying that which is haqq.
These are the attributes that these ayat put
together.
And we
found that Allah, Glorified and Exalted be He,
tells us a group of attributes for Muslims
or believers that Allah, Glorified and Exalted be
He, wants them to work with.
We realize that people are different and that
there are many opinions.
And we have to gather around us those
who have many similarities between us and them
so that we can move forward with our
call to the future.
So Allah, Glorified and Exalted be He, tells
us some attributes.
Notice this with me.
The issue of faith, the issue of heart,
the issue of behavior, which is related to
general behavior, the issue of avoiding immorality.
The issue of
behavior.
This is related to hearing and obeying religion.
The
issue of Shura is an original issue.
This is the issue of Mecca.
The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him,
taught Shura before he went to Medina and
applied it in Medina at many times.
And we learned from him, peace and blessings
be upon him.
These are the characteristics of Muslims.
We must gather around us those who are
similar to us in these matters and consult
them.
If you are in a council and there
are people who do not agree with something,
then Shura in this council is harmful.
It is a waste of time.
Time is spent arguing without a good reason.
And nothing is achieved because there is no
group of people who agree on basic issues
and general foundations as these verses say.
But if people agree on general foundations, they
can consult.
So there is no harm in separating the
group in which there are different people in
many issues.
This is not a separation.
Separation is when people separate to oppose each
other.
This is separation.
Separation is when you oppose those who do
not agree with you in everything.
And there is a difference between you and
him in opposing him even though he is
directed in his call to the same goal
to which you are directed.
But there is no harm in working with
those who have many similarities with each other.
There is no harm in this.
This strengthens Shura and helps them achieve their
goals.
It is a serious and important issue.
Allah, the Exalted, continues to tell us that
there is no problem with people being different.
The problem with those who
differ with you are the ones who oppress
people.
Who oppress.
And they are arrogant and they go
around trying to harm others.
That's the problem.
When someone does that, that's where you stand
up and you speak up against it.
And that's where تَفَرُّقُ is worth it.
Because you are going against ظُلْم.
You are going against oppression.
But nothing else.
He continues subhanahu wa ta'ala in the
ayat.
And he tells the Prophet ﷺ,
And if they refuse to listen to anything
We didn't
send you.
You're not a guardian of theirs.
Your job is not to be a guardian.
Your only job is to relay the message.
To relate the message, that's all your job
is.
Your job is balagh.
It's to let people explain things.
It's to raise awareness.
It's to spread knowledge.
Not to force people to accept anything.
It's an extremely important part of Surah Al
-Shura and the Qur'an.
Understanding our job is to educate.
Is to inform.
Not to force people to do anything.
Or to make any choice, really.
He continues subhanahu wa ta'ala with that
speech.
And he tells us, that dealing with others
will be good, but the way is only
for those who oppress people.
Only those who oppress.
What's different is the issue of oppression.
If they oppress and rebel on earth, there
will be a problem with them.
Then the Prophet says,
The important
thing is balagh.
Our job is to work together in da
'wah to spread awareness.
And to raise the level of awareness, to
spread knowledge.
And people have the correct information and the
precise understanding.
And other than that, we are not responsible
for whether they apply it or not.
This is their job, not ours.
Then Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala continues to
tell us how different we are.
He's telling us, I've made you different.
I own the cosmos and the earth.
And some people will have male children.
And some people will have daughters.
And some people will have both daughters and
sons.
And some people won't have children at all.
That's how He created things subhanahu wa ta
'ala.
Just accept it.
That's how He made it.
Just work with different.
People are different.
Work around the differences.
Learn to work with it.
Learn to surround yourself with people who are
like you.
Use shura and work respectfully with those who
you don't agree with.
The end of the surah is beautiful.
He tells the Prophet ﷺ, make sure you
hold on to your reference.
Your reference of Islam.
Your reference of the Quran.
We have
given you a spirit.
A soul.
Something that will grant you life.
The Quran is life for you.
It will grant society's life.
You didn't know what the book
and what faith was before this.
What we granted to you as a
light to guide whoever we want from our
servants.
Allah
will guide whoever He wants to the righteous
path.
The path of Allah.
And to Him belongs everything in the skies
and the earth.
Indeed, all matters
will finally arrive at His doorstep.
And that's the meaning of Surah
Ash-Shura.
And insha'Allah Tahajjud today starts 2.45.
We will continue to start Tahajjud at 2
.45 every night until the end of Ramadan
insha'Allah.
Our khatmah of Taraweeh will be on Thursday
insha'Allah.
We will recite the last half chapter of
the Qur'an with the du'a on
Thursday.
And we will have our Eid program insha
'Allah on Sunday morning.
So tune into that.
