Surah Al-Naml, Chapter 2, Verse 1 Bismillahir
Rahmanir Rahim, walhamdulillahi rabbil alameen Allahumma salli wa
sallim wa barak ala nabiyyina muhammadin wa ala
alihi wa sahbihi ajma'in wa ba'd Today
insha'Allah I will talk about Surah Al
-Naml, which is the last Surah within this
cluster of Surahs that we've been talking about
since the beginning of the month.
From Surah Al-Isra to Surah Al-Naml.
that talk about carrying the message of Allah
subhanahu wa ta'ala carrying this message to
the world and to communities and me to
be able to actually uphold the values and
the practices that exist within it and If
you look at these surahs I'm going to
talk about certain number and then hopefully I'll
have enough time to kind of summarize them
for you Each surah is talking about carrying
the message from a different angle and looking
and has a unique approach to to the
to the idea The last two surahs in
this cluster are talking about the effect of
certain things to two issues On our ability
to carry this message to the shore.
I yesterday talked about the effect The public
narratives will have on the success or the
failure of us being able to carry carry
this message forward and we saw the examples
of Musa and Ibrahim and the other prophets
and it talked about poets and art and
media and it talked about you know The
strength and the clarity of our narrative the
Muslim narrative or the Islamic narrative and we
saw the effect of both the public narratives
whether it's ours or the or the other
narrative and how that can affect really how
we carry this message and whether we Are
successful or not so at the namel will
also talk about the effect of something on
carrying the message but it's a different effect
is the effect of of strength of power
of authority of technology of science of having
a strong community or a strong civilization and
And that was that is what makes students
and certain them is very unique and we'll
talk about number at the end I'll leave
that till the end of the surah inshallah.
The surah starts out by telling us two
stories The first story is about Musa alayhis
salam.
He says So
the story shows us that moment where Musa
alayhis salam is walking alone in the desert
He's he's leaving Median with his wife and
he's going back to Egypt the the country
he was born in and he was raised
and he had to leave because he accidentally
killed someone and now he's a Basically a
fugitive and he's going back and he doesn't
know what's gonna happen.
He's someone who's Who's an outlaw at this
point and he's poor financially doesn't have much
money He doesn't have people to support him
He's in a very weak situation alayhis salam,
and then Allah subhanahu wa'ta'ala as he's
on his way.
He's called upon he goes to look for
a fire to bring something to Because it
was cold to bring some warmth to himself
and his family and then Allah subhanahu wa'ta
'ala calls upon him Booty come on finario
man.
How would I have blessed those who are
in the fire and around it?
And Musa alayhis salam is given to But
at that moment given two ayats two miracles
and if you continue reading the Ayat because
he just really a teen He left it
on a wakame at the end.
He was given all together nine miracles to
face up against your own So what if
it I don't do?
What you had to be her was taken
at her and fusillum Vulnerable Follow or kayfa
can I'll keep it will move CD when
you had to be had they refused it
and they even though it was Clear to
them.
It was true.
However, however, there was so much arrogance and
in their hearts See a voodoo and there
and they were so oppressive that they refused
to listen to it So look what how
Allah subhanahu wa'ta'ala punished them of CD
and those who are corrupt So that's the
story of Musa.
Let's keep that.
So Musa alayhis salam.
He was weak at that time He had
nine different miracles.
He had the better argument But Allah
Allah Allah
Allah Allah Allah Allah Allah Allah Allah Allah
Allah Muhammad Allah Allah Allah Allah The
second story, the story of Dawood and Sulaiman.
It talks about how Dawood and Sulaiman were
given knowledge by Allah, subhanahu wa ta'ala,
And they would say, Alhamdulillah, Allah subhanahu wa
ta'ala has given us more than He
has given any of His other creation, any
of His other servants.
And Sulaiman continued to carry that strength after
his father Dawood a.s. passed away.
And he would tell people, we were taught
to understand the languages of the animals.
And you are given the strength from every
single venue.
We are strong in every way.
His army a.s. was made of human
beings and jinn and animals.
Even the wind worked for Sulaiman a.s.
So you can see strength.
So when Dawood a.s. came back, and
I'll talk about Dawood a.s. at the
end.
When he came back with the information that
there is a kingdom that are worshipping the
So Sulaiman a
.s. hears of this kingdom that don't believe
in Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, they are
worshipping the sun.
So he sends them a letter.
And in the letter is,
Listen to the
words that Sulaiman says after that and then
compare it to what Fir'aun did.
You
Fir
'aun saw himself higher than Musa a.s.
So even though Musa a.s. had the
better argument, he didn't listen.
But when Sulaiman sends to Bilqis, he sends
the letter where it says,
Don't think you're higher than we are or
stronger than we are.
And come accepting Islam peacefully on
your own.
So what happens?
The queen Bilqis speaks to her army and
to her generals.
So what do they say?
They say, we are
strong and we have strength and we have
abilities and we can fight.
See, that's the only language they seem to
understand.
And because that's the only language they seem
to understand, it was the ability of Sulaiman
a.s. to actually surpass them in the
language that they understand that brought them to
Islam.
You see, Sulaiman a.s. was stronger than
them militarily.
And he had more knowledge.
He asked for the Arsh of Bilqis.
Can someone bring me her throne?
So two jump up.
The first one is one of the jinn.
I'll bring it to you before the end
of the day.
Another person who is more knowledgeable.
What does Kitab mean?
I don't know.
No one really knows.
If you read in Tafsir, you'll find a
hundred different explanations.
We don't know.
He has knowledge of the book.
Whatever book.
I can bring it to you immediately.
And then he saw it.
The man was able to bring it for
him immediately.
So science and technology and all that.
When Bilqis comes finally, Sulaiman a.s. takes
her to a place.
As the ayah says.
What does Sarh mean?
Many scholars have looked at the word Sarh
both here and in the story of Fir
'aun with Haman.
And some
scholars or older scholars had understood this as
being a ladder of some sort.
Well, Allah A'lam it's not a ladder.
It's more something similar to a telescope.
Something that allows you to see up into
the heavens.
So Fir'aun wanted to see what's up
there.
So you need something to help him see.
And what Sulaiman a.s. brought Bilqis to
see, صَرْحٌ مُمَرَّدٌ مِنْ قَوَارِي قَوَارِي is glass.
Has layers and layers of glass.
So she's looking through it and she can
see the universe and she doesn't know what
she's seeing.
And the reflection of it is making her
scared.
So she wasn't sure if she's walking on
water or not.
She's pulling up her dress because she wasn't
sure what she's on.
And she sees all that.
And when she sees the strength that Sulaiman
a.s. possesses, the knowledge that Sulaiman a
.s. possesses, the technology at that point that
The effect of power
was clear in this story.
There's a lot of things to learn from
this story.
But Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala gave us
the comparison.
Here's Musa a.s. Nine miracles didn't work.
Sulaiman a.s. was able to bring a
full kingdom with the queen into Islam because
of the effect of having a civilization.
But there's something interesting here.
Are Musa a.s. and Sulaiman exclusive?
Or is there something that brings them together?
Musa a.s. is one of the ancestors
of Sulaiman.
Musa is one of the earlier prophets.
So really what this is, is an effect
of time.
Musa a.s. brought the message and taught.
And it took a number of generations until
his message a.s. came to full fruition
through Dawud and Sulaiman.
It takes time for strength and power to
actually exist.
Just like the Prophet a.s. He passed
away prior to seeing the strength of the
Islamic Ummah actually come to fruition.
When he passed away still, the number of
Muslims was limited and the power of Muslims
was limited.
It only came to full fruition during the
time of Ummul Khattab, 15-20 years later.
And that's how these things work.
It takes time.
Another point that I want you to look
at.
Did you notice who the ruler of Sabah
was?
The ruler of Sabah was a lady.
She was a queen.
The Qur'an doesn't say anything negative about
the fact that she's a lady ruling a
kingdom.
Actually, this lady who's ruling a kingdom brings
her kingdom to Islam.
So she's a better ruler than probably most
rulers in the other stories of the Qur
'an.
This is what the Qur'an says.
Before you misuse a hadith of the Prophet
a.s. or a common cultural understanding, look
at what the Qur'an says first.
It's just better.
The second story is the story of David
and Solomon with the queen of Sabah.
But their battle wasn't even similar to the
battle of Solomon a.s. Then Solomon a
.s. wanted to show Balqees the knowledge that
he had.
So he came with her throne.
And a group of jinn raced to bring
it to him before the sunset.
And a group of scribes raced to bring
it to him before his side turned to
him.
And they brought it to him.
So Balqees came.
She saw the power.
She saw the knowledge.
She saw the progress.
She saw the throne of the scribes.
And what is similar, and Allah knows best,
in many contemporaries, if they look at this
matter and compare it to the throne that
Pharaoh asked for from Haman, is that it
is not a ladder.
It is a way to see the heavens.
Pharaoh wanted to see.
Is there a God?
Of course, Pharaoh is not a fool to
think that if he climbed a ladder he
would see something different.
But he wanted to see.
The same was the case with Suleiman.
He had a telescope, for example, made of
glass plates.
This is how the telescope works.
So when she looked at it and saw
the kingdom of the heavens and the earth,
and saw this reflection on the earth, she
thought she was walking in the water and
she took off her shoes.
So when she saw this progress, this knowledge,
and this civilization in Suleiman, she said, My
Lord, I have wronged myself.
And I have submitted to Suleiman, to Allah,
the Lord of the worlds.
And she brought her people to Islam.
Look at the difference.
The influence of power and civilization on carrying
this message.
There is an important point in this story.
Did Moses and Suleiman, peace be upon them,
have no connection or relationship between them?
Or was there a relationship?
Of course, Moses, peace be upon him, came
with the first invitation.
Then Suleiman came after Moses.
It is as if the invitation of Moses,
peace be upon him, was weak in the
beginning.
Then time worked.
He played his role until the invitation of
Moses reached the peak of its strength in
the days of Suleiman.
It is as if the Prophet, peace be
upon him, passed away and did not see
the prevention of the Muslims.
And he did not see the civilization of
the Muslims.
He passed away and Islam was still confined
in the Arabian Peninsula.
And it did not reach its peak and
strength until the time of Umar ibn al
-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him and
please him.
And this is the state of time.
One last point.
Did you notice that the ruler of Saba
was a woman?
She was a woman.
Did we see in the Quran that she
was a sin because she was a woman?
She used to rule the people.
Did we see that Allah, glory be to
Him, sinned the queen of Saba because she
was a woman?
Or that this wise queen came with her
whole people, came with her kingdom to Allah?
It is better than many others than those
who used to be ruled by men He
will come to his people on the Day
of Judgment and He will bring them into
the Fire.
Take this teaching from the Quran and do
not misunderstand the hadiths of the Prophet, may
Allah be pleased with him and please him,
and use them in a way that denies
the mind and denies the logic of the
Messenger of Allah, may Allah be pleased with
him and please him.
This is not good manners.
The third story after it is the story
of Salih and Thamud and Lut and Sadum.
Similar story.
When the da'ia, when the teacher of
Islam, when the person who is coming forward
with the da'wa is weak, the da
'wa doesn't make it as far.
We sent Salih to Thamud
and then they start fighting after they, we
have two groups now, the small group of
believers and the group of non-believers.
Because they started becoming aggressive,
they wanted to kill Salih and to kill
the followers and to kill the naqa.
When you're too much in
a hurry, whether you're looking for strength and
you don't understand that strength and civilization needs
time, or it's on the other side, because
you're strong, you think you can end things
quickly, and you can gain control quickly.
Why are you in such a
rush?
Musa was given
9 ayat, and there are 9 people in
the time of Salih.
The number 9
seems to work in both ways.
9 people looked around and said, you
know what, let's end this Salih business, let's
kill him.
And then when we're asked, we say we
never saw him.
And
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala saved Salih, and
the people of Thamud were punished.
Lut, the same problem.
Lut, the problem is even more difficult, because
Salih was trying to fix a problem of
oblivience, and negligence, and excessive wealth to the
problem of Thamud.
But Lut was trying to fix an ethical
issue, and he's trying to teach them how
to be pure, how to purify their relationships.
So what did they tell Lut?
Remove Lut and his
family from your village.
Why?
There are people who believe
in purity and cleanliness.
You see, the idea that is weak, that
doesn't have strength behind it, it could be
a strong idea, a great idea, but it
doesn't have strength behind it, is an idea
that won't find much success.
And that's what this third story is telling
us.
Strong ideas that don't have strong people behind
it, tend not to work as well.
And that's what Allah SWT is teaching us
here, it's important.
The verses after this are some of the
most beautiful verses in the Qur'an.
Where He says,
And
the verses after are just beautiful.
Or else who?
If you don't believe in Allah, you don't
believe...
Then who else is the one who created
the cosmos and the earth?
And brought rain down from the sky?
And brought all the green from the earth?
You would never dream to be able to
do that on your own.
Every verse ends with those
same words.
Is there another Lord besides
Allah?
There are people who don't want to understand.
And the verses go through all these...
Go read the verses because they're beautiful.
And they talk about the strength of Allah.
Because the true strength belongs to Allah SWT.
It doesn't belong to us.
The surah is teaching us the importance of
strength.
Of civilization, of knowledge, of technology, of...
But who owns strength?
It's Allah SWT.
That's why there's a beautiful verse.
who is in need.
Imagine someone in need, very weak.
No one around him, his hands up asking
Allah.
He's in desperate need of help.
Who else is going to answer
المضطرة when he makes dua?
And takes away difficulty.
And then make that person
a steward of the earth.
What transition is this?
How does he go from one moment being
in desperate need and the next moment he
is now a steward of the earth?
It's the strength of...
It's the power of Allah SWT.
That's His power.
He does what He wills with it, SWT.

The last part has some wa'az in
it Yawma yunfakhu fil-suur Fafazi'a man
fil-samawati wa man fil-ardhi illa man
sha'Allah Why are these verses in surat
al-naml?
Well the surah talked to us about the
effect of power on carrying this message And
since he's talking about power and the importance
of power and having power At the end
of the surah he has to remind us
of how weak we really are And how
on the day of judgment there will be
no other power but his subhanahu wa'ta alaih
So someone will blow into that horn And
then everyone will stay Everyone will get out
of their graves in hysteria In complete fear
Except the ones Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala
chooses to give them calmness And they all
come against their will to him And then
those mountains that were once hard rock will
turn into cotton And they blow into the
wind This is what Allah subhanahu wa ta
'ala created and he perfected everything he did
The last few verses in the surah tell
us what we are supposed to do Because
you're like well you're talking to us about
strength and politics and power and military Listen
to what he says at the end فَقُلْ
the end of the surah we're told how
we're supposed to behave regarding all these complexities
Where he says all you've been told to
do is to worship the lord of this
house Who he has made haram, he's talking
about the Kaaba And he owns everything subhanahu
wa ta'ala And he commanded you to
be the best Muslim you can be And
to recite the Quran And if people accept
it then khair, if they don't accept it
then it's their choice And say alhamdulillah and
one day you will see his ayaat, his
signs subhanahu wa ta'ala And you continue
to do your job Do the best you
can and play the role to the best
of your ability In the midst of all
this power struggle that happens in the world
But if we do have power and we're
able to obtain it as Suleyman did Then
people will accept Islam much quicker and much
earlier And if as communities we are stronger
people will accept Islam earlier as well The
issue of strength, it doesn't necessarily mean military
strength It could mean any form of strength
When communities come together and people stand by
each other and support one another That's strength
as well What are the examples of that
in the surah?
Al-Hudud He's a small bird A small
bird, no strength at all But he did
his job He scouted, he found people disbelieved
And he came late and he stood the
punishment of Suleyman But he said the truth,
he spoke up and he saved the nation
If we had a couple of hadahid in
our communities everywhere Then things would be much
better People who actually cared People who were
willing to do their job even if they
were weak And that's why the surah is
called An-Naml Why?
What's the beauty of An-Naml?
They're very small and weak But if you've
ever seen the actual house of the ants
What they actually have underground It's an empire
Every ant does its job Every ant does
what it needs to do It's not interested
in anything else It knows it's weak but
it plays its role And it contributes positively
to the bigger picture And that's really all
we need to do We need to contribute
positively to this bigger picture And that will
bring strength to our da'wah And it
will help us carry the risalah I don't
have enough time to summarize the surahs in
this cluster I will do that insha'Allah
tomorrow before we talk about Surah Al-Qasas
Glory and praise be to Allah.
There is no god but Allah.
I seek forgiveness from Him and repent to
Him And peace and blessings be upon the
Prophet Muhammad and his family and companions May
Allah reward you and bless you
