-Munafiqoon, And we tipo- into the وَاللَّهُ
The munafiqun will come
to you and they say, we believe that
you are the messenger of Allah.
Allah says, and I know that you're my
messenger, but I know that they are also
lying.
And they're using their oaths that they're taking
that.
We swear that we believe in you and
that we are followers of you and we
stand by you.
They're using that as means to protect themselves
from being excluded or removed.
They're using it as an excuse to allow
themselves to get closer and to run their
own agenda.
The surah actually describes them in a very
interesting way.
When you look at
them, they look good.
When they speak, they know what to say.
But it's all a show.
I mean, pieces of wood
that have been put for as an ornament.
The Arabs used to do that whenever...
They still do it when people come back
from Hajj.
They have like these big blocks of wood
and they put all these different ornaments on
it as a greeting or congratulations to whoever's
coming back from a trip.
So that's what the ayah is referring to
that they look really good on the outside.
But on the inside,
they live in fear.
They live in uncertainty.
Because when you don't...
When you show something different from what actually
exists on the inside, that causes an imbalance.
It causes people to be upset and unhappy
and depressed.
And it exists in our society a little
differently than it existed for the munafiqeen.
Because the munafiq is someone who acted like
he was Muslim but on the inside he
hated it.
He hated Islam and was working against it.
That's why the ayah says,
Indeed, they are the enemy.
And this is a very powerful ayah in
the Quran where Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala
is saying very clearly, they are the enemy.
You have other enemies, people on the outside,
countries, groups that are working against you, that
are going to war with you.
But the real enemy that you need to
be aware of, فَحْذَرْهُمْ be aware of them
are the munafiqeen.
And Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala here made
it very clear what our status is towards
them.
What stand you take towards the munafiqeen?
You beware.
You don't fight them, you don't kill them,
you don't remove them.
There's no aggression towards the munafiqeen in your
society, in your community even if they're exposed
as munafiqeen.
Allah subhanahu wa
ta'ala will take on the responsibility of
punishing them or working against them.
You have to continue to treat them with
the same amount of respect that you treat
everybody.
And that was made extremely clear during his
life, a.s.w., how he dealt with
the munafiqeen.
Specifically Abdullah bin Ubayy bin Salul, the head
of munafiqeen, he was basically their leader.
And how this man continuously tried to destroy
the nation of Islam more than once.
Tried to work against the Prophet a.s
.w., tried to get him killed, tried to
get the armies to come together and fight
the Muslims.
He left mid-war once, he took 300
people with him on the Day of Uhud.
And the Prophet a.s.w. refused to
punish him, refused to remove him.
Because if you do that, once you start
turning against your own citizens, I mean, there's
no...
It's just a downward spiral from that.
So you have to put up with the
fact that you have citizens that don't...
aren't in line with what you're thinking.
Their thought process isn't aligned with the goals
of the country that you have.
And you're always gonna have people like that.
But that's the reality of it.
And then Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala gives
And if they're told, you're making these mistakes,
these sins are horrible, you should ask Allah
subhanahu wa ta'ala for forgiveness.
Go to the Prophet ﷺ, and he'll talk
to you about it, and he'll make du
'a for you, and they turn away in
arrogance that they didn't want it.
It wouldn't make a difference
even if the Prophet ﷺ made istaghfar for
them and asked Allah to forgive them, because
they didn't want it.
You can ask for forgiveness for people who
did not ask for it, then it's not
gonna work.
They have to want it themselves.
It's something that's very specific, it's very private
between a servant and his lord to ask
for forgiveness.
And then it gives examples of things that
happened throughout like the time of the Prophet
ﷺ in Medina with the Muslims.
They actually go around
saying, don't give the poor Muslims money.
So maybe if you don't give them money,
they starve or they get frustrated, and they
leave the Prophet ﷺ and the number of
Muslims decreases.
So that they scatter and they
leave Islam.
Imagine on the way back from
one of the battles, the people from Muhajireen
fought with the people from Al-Ansar.
There was a dispute and it got a
bit ugly.
One of the Muhajireen said, oh, where's my
Muhajireen brothers?
And the other person from Al-Ansar said,
oh, where's my Al-Ansar brothers?
And both groups came together, they started fighting.
And the Prophet ﷺ ended it in a
very abrupt manner.
He was very upset and he said, this
is muntina, this is disgusting, this racism of
I'm from this tribe and you're from that
tribe and Sahaba.
But when Abdullah ibn Ubayy ibn Sadul heard
that that happened, he got filled with his
own personal nationalism and his own bigotry.
And he said, you know what, that's what
they're doing.
We allowed them to come into our country
and we fed them.
It's like we're feeding dogs.
He actually used those words.
He said, when we go back to Medina,
the higher people, the classier people will remove
the inferior people.
And he meant that his people will remove
the Prophet ﷺ people with him.
And this was circulated amongst the Sahaba.
It was circulated amongst the Sahaba and the
son of Abdullah ibn Ubayy ibn Sadul was
a true Sahabi, a true companion.
He heard it and came to the Prophet
ﷺ.
He said, look, Ya Rasulallah, my dad said
this, everyone knows.
If you're gonna order him to be executed,
please let me do it.
Let me do it.
Don't let anyone else do it because I
wouldn't be able to walk around knowing that
someone, you know, killed my father.
I wouldn't be able to do it.
The Prophet ﷺ said, no, of course not.
Of course not.
He said, definitely not.
But go and be the best son you
can be to your father.
People will not ever say that Muhammad killed
his companions ever.
If he's saying this about Ya Rasulallah, he
can say what he wants.
That's fine.
Say what he wants.
And these examples are just there for us
to learn the difficulty the Prophet ﷺ had
in dealing with people who were hypocrites, open
hypocrites.
Now there are lower levels of hypocrisy.
When people don't necessarily work against Islam, but
they don't necessarily commit to anything in Islam.
Meaning they're Muslim, but they don't actually follow
anything within the religion.
The munafiqeen that the Qur'an is talking
about in these examples are people who actually
works against the deen.
But then there are munafiqeen that are less
than that.
And the ayat in the surah also talk
about them, but in a different way.
O those
Don't allow your wealth or your
children or assets or anything that you have
distract you from the remembrance of Allah ﷻ,
from doing what you're here to do.
Whoever does
that, whoever allows his assets, his status, his
wealth, his family, anything to distract him from
Allah ﷻ, that's a level of hypocrisy.
And
give from your wealth, from whatever Allah ﷻ
gave you, give back.
It's not just about spending your money.
Anything that we gave you.
You were given time, you were given knowledge,
you were given experience, you were given time
and passion and empathy.
Whatever you have, give before the time comes
where you're on your deathbed and then you
wish that you could go back to give.
And people will ask Allah ﷻ, let's go
back and give sadaqah, and give charity.
Again, charity not just from your money but
from everything, not just materialistic charity but all
different types of charity.
But Allah ﷻ will not give you any
more time.
One of the hallmarks of a good Muslim
is someone who's willing to give from what
they have, give their wealth, give their time,
give their love, give...
A munafiq won't give.
A munafiq is distracted by, they'll just take,
they'll take whatever is offered to them and
they're distracted by their wealth and distracted by
it.
So nifaq has an extreme example which is
what the Qur'an talked about in the
beginning of the surah, in the middle of
the surah.
But it also has a milder example.
The people who don't really...
They're just Muslim on paper.
They don't really feel it, they don't really
practice it.
We have a lot of those.
A lot of people, you know them, you're
listening to me right now, you know a
lot of people in your family even, distant
relatives, friends.
And this is the true problem within our
Muslim ummah.
This is the actual enemy of ours.
That level of oblivion and just not caring.
How do we fix it?
We fix it with offering proper services, with
offering proper da'wah, with engaging people and
that's...
Because these aren't people who hate the deen,
they just are people who...
They got distracted by wealth and
children and whatnot.
And we need to remind them that you
need to, you know, start committing to Allah
سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى and giving from what you
have, giving from your wealth and your time
and your experience and your knowledge for the
sake of Allah before it's too late.
That's what...
And what will destroy this ummah is the
increase of number of munafiqeen in it.
Mind you, you are never allowed Islamically to
point your finger at anybody and say that
person is a munafiq, ever.
There is no situation that it's okay for
you to look at someone and say he's
a munafiq unless that person says, I am
a munafiq.
I mean, they're saying, that's what I am.
In that case, that's what they've labeled themselves
and that's their own label.
You don't have the right or the ability
to label people as munifaq because nifaq is
something that happens on the inside.
Nifaq is a problem that goes on on
the inside, only Allah
it.
And everything in the Qur'an and the
of what munafiqeen do are there for us
to beware for ourselves so that we don't
become munafiqeen.
Like Umar al-Khattab was always worried that
he was a munafiq.
And of course he's Umar al-Khattab, he's
far away from it.
But that's how he learned, that's how he
benefited from these verses and these hadith.
These verses and hadith are not formulas.
They're not laws so that we can look
at people and say, well, you do this
and you didn't do that and you're distracted
by this.
You must be a munafiq as the Qur
'an said.
No, that is actually a very dangerous thing
to do and I see people doing it
and hear people doing it all the time.
That is far away from being a good
Muslim as you can possibly be.
Calling someone a munafiq, that's not our business.
We don't have the ability to do that.
Again, unless they claim that themselves which is
very...
How many people have you met in your
life that claimed, I'm munafiq?
No, that never, almost never happens.
So don't waste your time using these verses,
trying to point fingers.
Rather use these verses so that you don't
become the problem, so that you don't become
أو مقابلاً it's a little bit different from
what it actually is when you're being fooled
when you're being lied to you're being مغبون
and this term is used a lot in
buying and selling التغابن is when there is
a lot of fooling going around there's a
lot of lying occurring and the surah talks
about the day of judgment and it calls
it يوم التغابن the day that all the
lies and the fooling and the illusions they
go away, and the truth prevails.
This surah also, it warns us from something
else that can cause us to lose our
societies, lose our communities.
If nifaaq is one of them, the other
one is misunderstanding and misreading what Allah Subh
'anaHu Wa Ta-A'la put us here
to do, and what we have, and the
value of what we have.
And that's why the surah is, when you
read it, you almost think it's a Meccan
surah, because it's so filled with i'tiqad, so
filled with creed.
The verses are so filled with
talking about creation, and Allah subhanahu wa ta
'ala's ability, it sounds like a Meccan surah.
And it almost is, but it's not.
It's a Madani surah with a Meccan flavor,
right in the middle of the juz'a,
just to remind people, do not lose sight
of what matters.
In the midst of all of this dynamic
movement that's occurring in the Muslim society, all
these changes, all these problems, all the jihad
that you're asked to do, and the infaq
that you're asked to do, and the problems
that are occurring from all of that, do
not lose sight of what really matters.
Do not lose sight that you're doing this
for the sake of Allah subhanahu wa ta
'ala, and that you're going to be resurrected
Yawm al-Qiyamah, and you're going to be
held accountable for all your actions.
The moment you forget that and get caught
up with institutional work, and social problems, and
flaws, and shortcomings, and difference of opinions, and
disputes, you can easily get sucked into that,
and you start forgetting why you're here, what
you're here to do.
This happens quite a bit.
People, subhanAllah, as they age, they look back,
and they wish they could go back to
the amount of spirituality that they had when
they were younger, and they spend their lives
trying to figure out how they can go
back to those early days when they made
sujood, and they made dua, and they felt
it, and it meant something to them.
What happened?
Just too much life happened.
Just too much was stacked on.
You get too distracted.
Too many things are happening all at once,
and it's sucking you away from what you
know you need to focus on more.
Surat al-Taghabun, just right in the middle
of that juzud, just before the end of
it.
It just, it comes in it, and it
sets the pace again, and just sets the
tone once again.
You have to remember why you're doing this.
Disbelievers say we're not going to be resurrected.
Say indeed, 100%, I swear to you, you're
going to be resurrected, and you're going to
be reminded of everything you did, and you're
going to be held accountable, and it's easy
for Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.
So believe in Allah, and His Prophet, and
the Noor that He sent this light, to
light the path, but sometimes it just gets
clouded, and crowded, and we stop being able
to see that.
will gather you for a day where everyone's
going to be gathered, and that's the day
of Taghabun.
That's the day where the truth will be
revealed, where all the fooling, and the lying,
and the deceit will all fade away, and
you can be stuck with the reality, with
the truth, and it's very painful, because we
depend on a lot of those lies, and
illusions, to keep things moving for ourselves, when
we're faced with the reality of what things
are, it's actually very painful, it's very difficult
to deal with.
That it comes down to what the verse
you believed, and you did the right deeds
for the sake of Allah subhanahu wa ta
'ala, then you're going to make it, and
if you didn't, then you're not.
Period.
Everything else doesn't matter.
Everything else is completely irrelevant and insignificant.
The verse is a very
different verse than the rest of the Quran.
Indeed, O those who believe, from your spouses
and your children, those will be enemies for
you.
How could they be my enemies?
Well, they distract you from Allah subhanahu wa
ta'ala.
They don't follow the way of Allah subhanahu
wa ta'ala.
They're not interested in the deen.
You raise them and teach them and prepare
them to be good Muslims, and they end
up not doing that.
So what is your job?
So pardon, and forgive,
and offer excuses, and just just continue to
do what you need to do.
Don't get distracted by these problems.
Don't allow them to take away that himmah,
that enthusiasm that you had in working for
the sake of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala,
the problems that you have in your life.
Because life just stacks problems, hoping to wear
you down, hoping to slow you down, hoping
to get you preoccupied with all that's going
around, so that you stop looking at where
you're going.
So you lose sight of what actually matters
in your life.
All that we give
you in terms of your wealth and your
children, it's just a part of the test.
Fitna as in you're being tested by it.
To see are you going to use it
in the best way?
Are you going to forget?
So show piety and draw
yourself closer, close to Allah subhanahu wa ta
'ala, to the best of your ability.
And listen to what is being
said.
And obey.
And give from what you've got.
And that's the best thing you
can do for yourself.
And
the person who can protect himself from his
own selfishness, that's the person who is going
to be the most successful.
If you offer your wealth and your time
and your love and your knowledge and your
experience for the sake of Allah, that you're
lending.
If you offer him a good loan,
لكم, he will multiply it for you.
ويغفر لكم, and he will forgive all your
sins.
And Allah Subh'anaHu Wa Ta-A'la
is indeed the one who repays in abundance.
And he is the one who is very
patient, Subh'anaHu Wa Ta-A'la.
فت التغابن is a surah that serves as
a reminder.
It's a warning.
Just like Surah Al-Mulafiqoon.
Surah Al-Mulafiqoon is a social warning.
Here's a problem in your society that can
cause you to lose your status as a
community.
This can ruin your society.
Beware of nifaq.
Beware of being it.
Beware of allowing munafiqeen to ruin what you're
trying to build.
Surah Al-Taghabun looks at it from the
opposite.
Beware of losing sight of what matters.
Beware of forgetting why you're doing all this.
Who you're serving with all of this.
Why you have what you have.
Why is that you're building a family, and
you have a family.
Don't forget that all of this is for
the sake of Allah, Subh'anaHu Wa Ta
-A'la.
You're doing it to serve Allah, Subh'anaHu
Wa Ta-A'la.
So do that to the best of your
ability.
Don't get caught up or preoccupied by side
wars and side problems and disputes that aren't
going to take you anywhere.
They're just going to hold you back.
So give everything.
The sahaba loved that verse.
They loved it.
Be the best you can be to the
best of your ability.
And listen, and obey, and give.
Do what you can.
Just keep on doing.
Don't stop.
Don't let anything stop you.
Don't let anything slow you down.
Don't let anything distract you.
Don't let anything get in your way.
Even, as the ayah said, if it's your
spouse and your children, sometimes they can set
out to do that to you.
But if they prove to be your enemy,
if they're your enemy, not just distractions.
See, distraction was in Surah Al-Munafiqeen, telling
us don't get distracted.
But if they prove to be your enemy,
then you're still in You
need to pardon, forgive, and take it easy
with them, and do your best with them,
and offer them what you can, and aid
them to the best of your ability.
And remember, they're just a part of the
test.
They're just a part of the test.
There's nothing more than that.
You're doing your best.
You tried your best.
It didn't work out.
You got married, had kids, tried your best
to make a good family.
It didn't work out the way you wanted.
It's just a part of the test.
Do your best.
Forgive, pardon, do what you can, and then
And then draw yourself
closer to Allah as much as you can,
and put in your 100%.
And that's all you were ever asked to
do.
Don't let anything else distract you.
And that's what sort of تَغَابٌ means.
It's just, don't get fooled.
Don't be fooled that having a lot in
dunya is the goal.
Having a family that is exactly the way
you want it, and having a house exactly
the way you want it, and the cars,
and the status, and the success.
That's not the goal.
The goal is just, you know, is to
serve Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى Sometimes those things will
work out for you, and sometimes they won't.
Don't let them distract you.
Don't let them ruin what you're trying to
do.
It's a very powerful surah.
I advise people to take time to listen
to it because you'll find like in the
Qur'an, and I talked about this before
in other clusters.
Whenever a cluster is مَدَنِي, you're always gonna
find somewhere in there verses that you feel
are so similar to the Makki surahs, and
they're usually very powerful.
Because they're trying to remind you in the
midst of life as you're moving forward, calculating
a million things, trying to stay on track,
remind you, don't forget who you're serving and
where you're going.
And you'll find that theme repeated in the
Qur'an.
سُرَةَالتَّغَابُنِ The meaning of سُرَةَالتَّغَابُنِ is deceit and
deceit.
A person shows something to another person, and
the truth is something else.
So on the
Day of Resurrection, يَوْمُ التَّغَابُنِ because this will
disappear.
All the deceit that was in this world,
the lies, the deceit, the deceit, and the
deceit that we were deceived by in this
world, will disappear on the Day of Resurrection.
You'll feel that سُرَةَالتَّغَابُنِ is a Makki surah,
even though it's a Madani surah.
All of it is a Hadith about Allah
and His Greatness, and a Hadith about Resurrection
and Resurrection in the Hereafter.
