Surah Al-Jathiyah In the name of Allah,
Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise is due to Allah, Lord of
the worlds.
Allahumma salli wa sallim wa barak ala nabiyyina
wa habibina Muhammadin wa ala alihi wa sahbihi
ajma'in wa ba'd.
Today, insha'Allah, I will talk about Surah
Al-Jathiyah.
It's the 6th surah in the cluster of
Al-Hawamim, which is the 8th cluster of
surahs in the Qur'an.
And Al-Hawamim, they talk about, they give
advice and warnings for us as we continue
on our journey of serving Allah subhanahu wa
ta'ala and His faith.
The first 3 surahs gave us a piece
of advice and the second 3 will give
us warnings.
And Surah Al-Jathiyah is the last one
of those 3.
And tomorrow, the last surah in the cluster
will state a very important rule that I'll
talk about.
Surah Al-Jathiyah is a Makki surah.
It's not very long, it's 3.5 pages.
And the warning that it offers is from
vanity and arrogance.
This is the downfall of most people.
It was the downfall of Iblis, it was
the downfall of Fir'aun, it was the
downfall of Qarun, it was the downfall of
many characters in the Qur'an and people
whom we know lived with us or lived
before us.
Vanity and arrogance are a lethal disease.
And the surah begins by stating some of
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala's signs in the
universe.
The surah
starts by saying that indeed within the cosmos
of the earth there are signs for those
who believe.
And at the end of counting these signs,
He says subhanahu wa ta'ala
These are the signs of Allah
subhanahu wa ta'ala.
We are reciting them upon you with righteousness.
What else are you going to believe in
if not the signs of God?
And these...
If you go to the verses, you'll find
that the first one ends with المؤمنين the
second one ends with يَعْقِلُون the second one
ends with يُقِنُون As if the surah is
saying the more you look at these signs,
you go from a state of faith to
a state of understanding, to a state of
certainty.
You kind of build your faith that way.
This is all a build-up so that
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala in the rest
of the surah points out the problem of
arrogance from different parties.
The first party that Allah subhanahu wa ta
'ala points out the arrogance regarding their behavior
is the disbelievers.
وَيْلٌ لِّكُلِّ أَفَّاكٍ أَثِيمٌ أفاك is someone who
lies publicly or forwardly or just openly with
no shame regarding it.
Someone who lies and supports their lies and
knows that they're actually lying.
أَثِيم is sinful.
So someone who's doing it knowing that it's
wrong.
Sometimes in rare cases someone will be lying
and not knowing that's the wrong thing to
do.
But أَفَاكٍ أَثِيمٌ is someone who's lying and
knows that they're lying.
Why is that description there?
This person hears
the signs of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala
being recited upon him and then he turns
his back in arrogance and vanity as if
he didn't hear them as if he wasn't
listening.
The audacity of knowing what is right but
because it doesn't serve your personal interest or
it's not something that you supported all along
or someone else that you don't like supports
or whatever the reason is they refuse it.
The downfall of arrogance from someone who is
And if you show
these people if you show someone like that
the signs of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala
they will treat it as a joke as
if they will mock it.
Addressing
the second group, indeed for you we have
created everything that's in the cosmos and on
the earth.
We've created it for your service, for your
benefit.
Indeed, you will find signs if you contemplate.
And then the ayah after that is one
of the most amazing ayahs in the Qur
'an that I think we should all take
time to learn and read.
Stay to the
believers.
For them to forgive.
The people who
don't believe in God and have no hope
in akhira.
Meaning they don't believe in the hereafter and
they have no hope or care for what's
going to come next after death.
As Allah Subh
'anaHu Wa Ta-A'la will take care
of the reward or the punishment of everyone
based on what they do.
The believers being commanded by Allah Subh'anaHu
Wa Ta-A'la in this verse to
forgive the disbeliever.
One of the worst things you can do
as a Muslim is to use Islam as
means of arrogance towards non-Muslims or disbelievers.
One of the worst things a believer can
do, a Muslim can do is to use
deen as a reason to be arrogant and
vain.
One of the worst things of all.
It's worse even than what the kafir does.
Why?
Because you've been given the truth, you know
the truth and yet you're using it for
your personal interest.
That's why this ayah say, tell the believers
to forgive the disbelievers.
Allah Subh'anaHu Wa Ta-A'la will
take care of punishment and reward.
Forgive, don't be arrogant, don't hate, don't make
it worse for them.
It's a very important ayah and it's very
meaningful.
Right after that we have a few verses
where Allah Subh'anaHu Wa Ta-A'la
talks to the Prophet Alayhi Salatu Was Salaam
and he commands the Prophet to hold on
to what he's been commanded to hold on
to.
See the surah, the
ayat after that talk about Bani Israel, how
they were given clarifications from the matter of
deen and faith and how they threw it
away and didn't follow it properly.
And then the Prophet Alayhi Salatu Was Salaam
is told, we gave you shari'atin min
al-amr.
We gave you an ordained way of life.
It was very clearly explained in detail.
And we commanded you to hold on to
it and follow it clearly and properly.
And don't follow the whims of those who
do not know what you know.
They will not help you.
And indeed the oppressors will support one another.
And Allah Subh'anaHu Wa Ta-A'la
will support those who believe in Him.
In the midst of talking about arrogance, addressing
different groups and the importance of shying away
from it and being very aware of it,
the verse has come to remind us that
you must hold on to what Allah Subh
'anaHu Wa Ta-A'la sent.
That the shari'ah actually commands you to
follow certain laws and rules.
And if you follow them, you end up
shying away from stuff like this.
The problem that we have is that we
cherry pick when it comes to what we
want to do within our deen.
Certain aspects of our deen we like, so
we follow and others we don't, so we
leave it.
And that causes an imbalance in our faith
and our deen.
And it causes cracks, I can say probably,
cracks within the structure of our deen and
through these cracks seep arrogance and vanity and
all the other problems.
But if we followed properly as this ayah
told the Prophet ﷺ, that probably wouldn't have
happened.
Then Allah Subh'anaHu Wa Ta-A'la
directs the talk about arrogance as a warning
to the believer with a beautiful great verse.
Allah Subh'anaHu Wa Ta-A'la says,
Amazing.
The believer is told to forgive those who
don't believe in Allah or the Last Day
and don't have any hope in the Hereafter.
Meaning, he doesn't have any interest in the
Hereafter.
There are people, if you talk to them
about deen, they'll say, Sheikh, talk to someone
else.
Leave me alone with these things.
These are issues that don't concern me.
I left this topic a long time ago.
It's been on my mind for years.
If you talk to them, they'll refuse to
listen.
What are you doing with them?
What are you forgiving them for?
Because the whole problem is to be arrogant
towards them.
That's why they use deen as an excuse
to be arrogant towards people.
This is a big mistake.
It's a problem to use the Shari'a
of Allah and deen and to use the
great gift from Allah Subh'anaHu Wa Ta
-A'la to us.
The gift of Islam and guidance.
To use this as a way to be
arrogant towards others is a problem.
So here the believer is commanded to forgive
those who don't hope for the Days of
Allah.
To reward a people for what they have
earned.
Everyone will be rewarded by Allah Subh'anaHu
Wa Ta-A'la.
No one will leave without being rewarded.
Don't be afraid of this matter.
Don't be arrogant about it.
It's not our mission to judge them.
What's important is to call them and do
good to them.
Whoever does good, it's for himself.
And whoever does evil, it's for himself.
Then to your Lord you will be returned.
Everyone has what he has and what he
has on him.
Everyone returns to Allah.
Even you, O believer, you will return to
Him.
And you will have what you have and
what you have on you.
Then great verses come after this.
In which Allah Subh'anaHu Wa Ta-A
'la moves to the matter.
The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him,
after showing it to the children of Israel
with clear proofs of the matter they were
given, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon
him, orders them to adhere to the Shari
'ah.
Then We have made you on a Shari
'ah of the matter.
So follow it and do not follow the
desires of those who do not know.
In addressing the warning of arrogance, Allah Subh
'anaHu Wa Ta-A'la reminds us that
the way to get rid of all these
sins is to adhere to the command of
Allah.
Not to be biased in religion.
Not to be excessive and not to be
excessive.
It is not within our capacity as Muslims
to say that we love this divine matter
and we hate that.
We love this part of the Shari'ah
and we hate that part and we never
reject it.
It is for everyone to accept.
And if you accept all the commands of
Allah, then We have made you on a
Shari'ah of the matter.
What a strange description!
Arrogance has not led to self-denial.
But this self-denial in the religion of
Allah makes in the religion a heartache and
a heartache to which arrogance, likeliness, and others,
and other illnesses, and other calamities, descend.
The verses after that talk or warn from
arrogance and vanity regarding people who have knowledge.
Due to knowledge.
Meaning the first group was the disbelievers, warning
them from their arrogance.
The believers warning them from their arrogance.
And then talks about a very specific group,
the group of knowledgeable people.
Regardless of what type of knowledge you have.
Those who have knowledge are at risk from
falling into these problems.
Listen to the verse that Allah subhanahu wa
ta'ala uses in this.
Did you see
the person who took his personal desires and
whims as his God, as his deity.
I mean the one that they actually follow
is not Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala and
his commands but what they want, their nafs,
what they feel inside, what they want to
do, what they would like to do, what
serves them, whatever self-serving.
And Allah subhanahu wa
ta'ala has misguided them even though they
have knowledge.
This is the words of the ayah.
And it's as if, the ayah is continuing,
it says, it's as if Allah subhanahu wa
ta'ala has put a shield or a
barrier in front of their eyes and their
ears and their hearts and they can't understand.
Meaning they're staring them in the face but
they still can't understand it.
And they'll say, life is just life, we
live and we die and that's it.
There's nothing after it, there's nothing before it,
there's no meaning to it.
Knowledge sometimes can lead us down that road.
We know that today more than ever.
Never historically has there been a time where
there are more knowledgeable people who have lost
faith in the supreme power than what we
see today.
The next group that Allah subhanahu wa ta
'ala warns them against is the people of
knowledge.
He warns the disbelievers and the believers.
But there is a special warning from the
one whom Allah has given them knowledge.
Knowledge, my brothers, is for those who spend.
Knowledge elevates a person.
And a Muslim is not commanded anything as
he is not commanded to ask for knowledge.
But it is possible that Allah will misguide
the people of knowledge.
The verse says, Did you see who took
his god and his desire and Allah misguided
him to knowledge and sealed his ears and
his heart?
This seal can happen to the one who
is proud of his knowledge and thinks he
is better than others because of the knowledge
Allah has given him.
So he becomes an atheist and says, life
is just life, we live and we die
and that's it.
And they have no knowledge of that.
They only think.
The person walks in a dark path.
And knowledge has a special warning.
And it is important.
The final part of the surah.
We're taken to a clip of Yawm al
-Qiyamah.
It's probably one of the scariest clips that
we have in the Qur'an.
And Allah subhanahu wa ta
'ala to him, He owns subhanahu wa ta
'ala the cosmos and the earth.
And on the day of judgment when the
time comes, those who followed the wrong path
will lose.
And on that day, when the
person finally figures out what's going to happen
next, when it finally sinks in, what's going
to come after all of that.
Once Jahannam is paraded and they see the
Mawazin and Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala is
judging people and it finally sinks in, nations
fall to their knees.
Knowing that what's coming next is not what
they were hoping for.
Every nation is going to be called to
their book.
It's as if not only are we going
to be held accountable individually for what we
did, but at a certain point, there's going
to be public accountability.
There's going to be group accountability for how
we lived our lives.
Nations will be judged as nations and then
within each nation, individuals will be judged.
There's a book for each nation that they'll
be judged by.
Why are they on their knees?
Out of fear?
Out of anxiety?
I don't know.
But it's a sign of humility.
That same humility had that nation possess that
humility in dunya instead of the arrogance, they
wouldn't be in that spot.
But they lacked humility in dunya.
So Yawm al Qiyamah, that has to be
the case.
You're going to be humble.
It's just a matter of choosing when.
We're going to be humble.
We just have to choose whether we're going
to do it now or wait until that
moment when we're on our knees.
And nations are being judged, not just individuals,
for how they behaved, and for what they
forgot, and what they left out, and the
people they left behind.
I feel like the part of this verse
is used because the only place in the
Qur'an where there's some reference to group
accountability instead of individual accountability is because what
nations do, what groups do, what societies do
is that they forget or they leave behind
the weak.
They leave behind the poor.
And what causes that is arrogance.
What causes societies to continue to move forward,
leaving behind the more vulnerable parts of their
more vulnerable peers is just arrogance.
Not caring for those who are poor and
who are weak, who have nothing.
So Yawm al Qiyamah, there's going to be
accountable.
There's going to be group accountability regarding that.
The surah ends with him saying, subhanahu wa
Indeed, only to Allah, exclusively to
Allah, is all hamd.
Hamd.
This is how you get rid of vanity.
You want to get rid of vanity?
You use hamd.
You praise Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.
Praise is always due to Allah subhanahu wa
ta'ala, not to us.
If you praise yourself, you're taking the spotlight
and you're putting it on you.
The spotlight isn't on me.
It never was, it isn't now, it never
will be.
Spotlight is Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.
It belongs to Him.
Praise is due to Him, not due to
us.
And if you start thinking about that when
you say it every time, the levels of
arrogance and vanity will slowly start to come
down and you'll start to see, it's like
it's blocking vision when it comes down, you
can start seeing clearly again.
And true arrogance and vanity belongs
to Allah.
That's the last verse in the surah.
Strength and integrity.
And arrogance that is acceptable because Allah subhanahu
wa ta'ala has the right to be
that.
We don't.
We're creations.
We're simple.
We can't even support our own bodies.
And that's the lesson from surah al-Jathiyah.
Beware of arrogance.
It's the final downfall.
Disbelievers have to beware of arrogance.
Believers have to beware of arrogance.
Knowledgeable people must beware of arrogance.
And nations will be judged based on their
arrogance.
Because Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala owns all
of that.
To Him all praise and to Him all
supremeness.
And understanding that is extremely important.
I think I have a minute so I'll
quickly summarize in Arabic.
