The Story of Surah Al-Qasas, Chapter 2,
Verses 3-4 Today,
Insha'Allah, the fifth cluster of Surahs within,
starts from Surah Al-Qasas and ends with
Surah Al-Sajdah and Al-Qasas.
We have with different things within our existence.
Starting with Surah Al-Qasas yesterday, we talked
about how our relationships with others, with their
stories and our own stories, and how our
stories intertwine, and the relationship that we have
with all that, and how to view it,
how to deal with it, what Allah SWT
expects of us, and kind of the perspectives
behind it.
And Surah Al-Qasas is a very beautiful
Surah to spend time reflecting upon.
This whole cluster is very interesting.
Surah Al-Ankabut talks about the relationships that
we have with the events that take place
within our lives.
Like within the story, we have a lot
of things that are happening.
There's a lot of trials, and a lot
of tests, a lot of ups and downs,
and bumps, and difficulties, and challenges, and calamities,
and misfortunes.
And that's just how life works.
And what is expected of us during these
fitan and these mihn, all these difficulties that
are happening, is for us to continue with
our mujahadah, to continue to strive.
The interesting part of Surah Al-Ankabut is
that it's a Malki Surah.
Surah Al-Qasas was revealed just after Abu
Talib ibn Khadijah passed away, prior to al
-Isra.
And Surah Al-Ankabut was revealed just before
the Prophet ﷺ performed hijrah.
Just before he actually left Mecca and went
to Medina.
And you'll see that there's an important correlation
in the Surah regarding that.
But what I'm trying to say is that
it was a Malki Surah.
And the word mujahadah or jihad that exists
in the Surah, that word existed before the
concept of battle was even acceptable in Islam.
Unfortunately, whenever you hear the word jihad, people
get all tense.
The word jihad in Islam means to strive,
means to work against difficulties, to have a
goal and keep on working and going for
it, regardless of how hard everything gets.
That's what it means.
And the first time the word mujahadah and
jihad was used, was in Surah Al-Ankabut,
before fighting and battles was ever a thing.
You see, battles and fighting only became a
part of the life of sahaba after they
did hijrah.
After they went to Medina, and they established
a country, and they had an army, and
then they were told,
But before that, there was no application
of battles or fighting.
So when Allah Subh'anaHu Wa Ta-A
'la used the word jihad within this surah,
obviously He's referring to the concept of striving
and not to fighting or battling, which is
very important.
This surah begins by saying,
That
people actually think that they were going to
be let go and left, to say, we
believe in Allah, we stand by Allah, we
submit to Allah.
And they're not going to
be trialed, and they're not going to be
put to the test?
Is that what they think?
Of course not.
Indeed, we have
tested and trialed the people before them.
And
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala will expose the
honest and the truthful, and He will expose
the liars and the ones who are dishonest.
Within that beginning of the surah, He says,
And those who strive, they strive
for themselves.
When you're strivinging, you're doing it for the
sake of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, but
you're not benefiting Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala,
you benefit yourself when you strive.
When you don't give up, when you don't
succumb to pressure, when you don't let things
continue being done in the wrong manner, you
strive for yourself, it benefits you, it benefits
the community that you live in.
This is a central part of understanding, striving
and mujahidah.
Indeed, Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala
is not in need of His creation and
their striving.
We're not doing it to benefit Him, we're
doing it for ourselves.
We need this, and you can see how
Surah Al-Ankabut is going to teach us
that quite clearly.
You continue with the ayat, and then Allah
subhanahu wa ta'ala talks about our relationship
with our parents.
And
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala commands you to
be the best you can be with your
parents.
And if the Mujahidah is coming from the
opposite side now, if they strive against you,
trying to change your faith, and make you
a non-Muslim, فَلَا تُطِعْهُمَا Don't follow them
on that, but you still have to be
the best you can be with them.
It's the Mujahidah that we have to continue
to hold on to with our parents.
It's never okay to give up on our
parents, it's never okay to start mistreating them.
It's Mujahidah, it's a fitna, it's a mihna,
it's a difficulty of life, and this is
how we strive.
We continue to be the best we can.
If they try to change what is right
in our lives, then we say no, we
don't do it, we don't accept it.
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala says, continuing the
And there are people who when they say
we believe in Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala,
and then if they are harmed as they
strive for the sake of Allah subhanahu wa
ta'ala, they start drawing a comparison between
the harm that occurred upon them from people,
and the punishment of Allah subhanahu wa ta
'ala.
They start to think, I'm not sure whether
striving for the sake of Allah is worth
going through all these difficulties from people.
Maybe I should leave the striving alone as
long as people don't hurt me.
Forgetting that if they don't strive and they
don't continue to do what Allah subhanahu wa
ta'ala commanded them to do, Allah subhanahu
wa ta'ala will punish them.
But if things work out, they'll say,
oh, we were on your side the whole
time.
People who are only in it for the
good times.
They're only in it if things go well.
And if things don't go well, suddenly they're
not a part of it anymore.
That doesn't work.
That's not striving.
Striving when there's other, when there's difficulties, when
you're being harmed, that shows the character, that
shows the sincerity and truthfulness.
The kuffar would tell the Muslims something in
Mecca.
They would say,
Look, follow our ways, and just
don't change anything.
Stop this whole Islam business that you're doing.
And we will carry all your sins for
you, Yawm al-Qiyamah.
It's an awesome offer.
We'll take all the sins, just don't change
things.
It sounds like a good offer.
We don't have to go through all the
striving and the difficulty.
And we don't have to play for it
Yawm al-Qiyamah.
But that's not how things are.
That's not how it's done.
Keeping things the way they are is the
biggest mistake.
Especially when you need to strive against falsehood.
Because Allah Subh'anaHu Wa Ta-A'la
created this life based on the fact that
there's ibtidah.
That we're going to be put to the
test and trialed.
Walking into life not expecting tests and trials.
Not expecting calamities and difficulties.
It's like being taken to an amusement park
and expecting everything to be very mild and
easy going.
Once you go on a ride and you're
rocketing 90 degrees, it's going to be difficult.
But that's what you walked into.
That's what life is.
Life is filled with trials and tests.
For you to say, let's leave things as
they are, it's too difficult.
And they were offered this deal by the
kuffar.
With the stories of people and with our
own stories.
And the intervention of these stories.
And what Allah has commanded us to do
in dealing with these stories.
And how we understand them and how we
look at them.
And today, Surah Al-Ankabut talks about our
relationship with the trials of life.
And the trials of life and the trials
of life.
This is the natural thing in life.
To be filled with trials and trials and
tests.
And our mission is to strive.
The first time the word Jihad was mentioned
in the Quran was in Surah Al-Ankabut.
And it was revealed in Mecca.
It was revealed before the emigration.
Before the emigration of the Prophet, peace and
blessings be upon him.
This is important.
Because there is a lot of mention of
the emigration.
And we will explain this by Allah's will.
So before the battle was declared.
And before there were battles and armies.
The word Jihad was found in the Quran.
And striving.
Okay, what does that mean?
We are used to the word Jihad being
related to battles and wars.
No.
Striving is putting effort in the face of
difficulties to achieve goals.
And this is the meaning of the Quran.
If the Quran wanted to talk about wars.
It said, the battle is written for you.
And the battle is a pleasure for you.
The Quran wants the meaning of the battle.
But striving is a general word.
And Jihad is a general word.
No one will be surprised if he hears
it.
It is a great word.
And it is a great principle of Islam.
The Surah starts by saying.
Does the people think that they will be
left to say, We believe, and they will
not be tested?
Do you think that you will believe?
And that you will declare your faith to
the universe?
And that Allah will never test you?
And We have tested those before them.
So Allah does not know those who are
truthful.
And He does not know the liars.
The truthful and the liars will be exposed.
Allah will not be sure of this.
No one will live his life without being
tested.
And whoever strives, strives only for himself.
Allah is self-sufficient.
He does not need anything in our Jihad.
Our striving is for ourselves.
To achieve justice in our land.
To remove injustice.
To do good and forbid evil.
To do good and remove evil.
This Jihad is for us.
It is in the way of Allah.
But it is not for the benefit of
Allah.
Allah does not benefit.
We are the ones who benefit.
Allah mentions examples in the Quran.
The first example.
And We have shown man his parents a
good thing.
And if they strive for you to associate
with them, which you have no knowledge of,
then do not obey them.
The obligation is to do good to the
parents.
Even if the Jihad comes from their side
to expel you from your religion.
Do not obey.
And remain good to them.
Be good to your parents, no matter what
happens.
But if they try to persecute you from
the truth and righteousness, then do not listen.
This is the persecution of the parents and
the Jihad in them.
Allah says, Whoever says, We believe in Allah,
but when he is harmed in Allah, he
makes the persecution of people like the punishment
of Allah.
How is it that when you are harmed
in Allah, you say, By Allah, what I
will cast from people is like what I
will cast on the Day of Resurrection in
the Fire.
So there is no difference between these two.
I give up the Jihad.
At least I am at ease now.
Never.
How do you compare the punishment of Allah
to the persecution of people?
And if a victory comes from your Lord,
they will say, We were with you.
But if good comes, they will say, We
are with you.
This is only when good comes.
That is, I am ready to be a
Muslim, a Mujahid, and be with you if
good comes.
But if evil comes, and harm comes, if
harm occurs, then it has nothing to do
with me.
This is not the Jihad.
The Jihad cannot be part of the Islamic
work only if the positive results are achieved.
And if the negative results are achieved, or
the harm is achieved, or you are harmed,
then how do you get out of it?
The Jihad is to keep working until the
Hour comes, whether what you want comes to
you or what you don't want comes to
you.
And the disbelievers opposed the Muslims.
Follow our way, and let us bear your
sins.
A tempting land.
Don't change anything, and leave these problems.
You just stay as you are, and we
will bear your sins.
This was comforting for them.
But the origin is the Mujahidah.
And the origin is change.
How can evil be left on earth?
How can falsehood be left?
How can misguidance be left?
The Mujahidah of these things is the obligation
that Allah has given us.
He continues, and he starts telling us stories
from the Prophets.
So he tells us the story of Nuh.
In this story, we are told how long
he did it.
For 950 years, regardless of how those years
were calculated.
But it was a long time.
Nuh's Mujahidah was against time.
He had to go against time.
And he did everything he could, and he
had to leave at the end.
He had to do hijrah.
He had to leave.
...
You look at Ibrahim as he is performing
da'wah in every single manner possible.
From every angle, he is talking to his
people time and time again.
Pointing out to them the mistakes that they
are making.
And saying at the end, If you refuse
all this, and you turn away, well, many
nations before you have done the same thing.
And all I can do is teach.
And they didn't believe in Ibrahim either.
And Ibrahim had to leave.
He had to do hijrah as well.
He had to leave and go live somewhere
else.
Lut is the only one who believed in
Ibrahim.
What is the first thing Lut said?
I am going to perform hijrah.
I am going to immigrate to my Lord.
And he had to go deal with the
difficulties of Sadum.
He went and he did Mujahidah against the
people of Sadum, and the horrible mistakes they
were making.
But they didn't listen.
They weren't interested either.
You go from one story to the other,
and you see every prophet putting in their
full effort.
A really nice aspect of the story in
Al-Ankabut is when Ibrahim is told by
the angels who are on their way to
save Lut and those with him, and punish
Sadum.
Where Ibrahim hears the story, and he tells
them, When he is told that Sadum is
going to be punished, he says, What do
you mean you are going to destroy Sadum?
Lut is in Sadum.
We know who is there.
We will save him and his family.
Why was Lut saved?
Because he continued to perform Mujahidah.
The moment you give up, the moment you
stop striving against falsehood, is the moment that
when punishment occurs to the people you are
living amongst, it will occur upon you as
well.
Even if you didn't necessarily agree.
Even if you weren't participating.
If you are not doing Mujahidah, if you
are not striving against falsehood, and against that
which is wrong, then when punishment occurs, it
occurs to you as well.
It is a very scary point, and it
is pointed out here in Surah Al-Ankabut.
This is the relationship we have with the
difficulties within our lives.
We can't afford to sit around and watch,
and say, At least I'm not doing it.
Or taking the offer, You can carry our
sins.
That's not an option here.
You continue reading the stories in Surah Al
-Ankabut.
It talks about Madian and Shu'aib, the
same thing.
And they refused.
And then the ayah just
counts a bunch of people.
It counts Aad, and it counts Thamud, and
it counts Qarun, and it counts Fir'aun,
and it counts Haman, it counts all the
basic leaders that went against their prophets and
refused to believe in them.
And at the end he says,
And each and every group of people
were punished because of their sins and because
of their refusal.
But all the prophets performed full Mujahidah.
They strived with all their might.
And because they did that, Allah ﷻ saved
them.
He saved the prophets, which is what the
surah talks about.
The prophets themselves were saved.
And if they weren't saved, they left at
least.
They had to leave, which is a point
that is central in Surah al-Ankabut.
The example of the Ankabut is given in
this surah as well.
Let me just translate first.
The example of
The example here
is that anything you depend upon anything that
you feel is solid in your life besides
Allah SWT is like a spider building a
house for itself that spider thinks she has
a strong house but does she really?
No she doesn't all it takes is a
child running by too quickly or some wind
and it's gone and in our lives if
we depend upon anyone or anything besides Allah
SWT if we have a constant in our
life that isn't Allah then it's like the
spider in her house she loses it very
quickly and we will lose it very quickly
as well the only constant that you have
the only thing you can rely upon and
depend upon is Allah SWT everything else is
a variable everything else will go and come
I guarantee you nothing stays but Allah SWT
He's all you have He's all we've got
and the quicker we realize that and the
quicker we can understand that the easier life
will be and the more clear things will
be for us and as long as we're
holding on to something else thinking that it
will stay for us you're in for so
much disappointment you're in for so much heartbreak
He's all we have مَثَلُ الَّذِينَ اتَّخَذُ it's
a very important example and it's in the
middle of the surah and the surah was
named after it because it's telling us that
just continue to strive for Allah He's all
you've got strive in His sake because there's
nothing else that's constant the verses continue and
they give us a number of tips the
surah starts to give us some commands on
how we're supposed to behave
You argue with those who
are from a different faith, you debate them
you talk about faith, you do it with
الأحسن, you say the best words إِلَّا الَّذِينَ
Unless they are oppressors, if they
are oppressors then the Mujahid is going to
happen in a different way altogether The Quran
Is that not enough for them?
They're asking that
They're asking for extraordinary phenomenons and
miracles, no no The Quran is more than
enough, all you need is right there in
the Quran, it's all there, it's all you
need You've never needed anything else but that
If you do all of that, if you
can perform your Mujahidah, reading the Quran establishing
your prayers remembering Allah SWT holding on to
the Quran as you move along then يَا
And it doesn't work, and now you're threatened
and you're going to lose your own faith
and you feel this isn't Then leave, Allah
SWT is saying Oh my servants, the earth
is very very wide My earth is huge
Go worship me wherever you find a place
to worship me فَإِيَّا يَفَعْبُدُونَ الَّذِينَ صَبَرُوا وَعَلَى
Continuously being perseverant and depending upon
only Allah SWT يَتَوَكَّلُونَ Allah SWT gives us
some advice in this process of striving for
the trials and tribulations that come into our
lives our relationship with the events of life
He says, recite what has been revealed to
you the recitation of the Quran and establish
prayer and remember Allah and know that the
Quran is enough or it is not enough
for them that we have revealed the Quran
to you and it should be recited to
them and if you argue with the people
of the Quran or other religions then argue
with them in the best way but if
they are wrongdoers then argue with them in
a different way These are all his advice
Allah SWT gives us
The
Companions had a hard time with this but
the verses are clear All the Prophets before
you emigrated Don't depend on the land Even
the land, don't depend on it Don't say
it is impossible to leave it Leave it
The only permanent thing is Allah The only
permanent thing is our Lord Everything else changes,
no problem We change, we change الَّذِينَ صَبَرُوا
Coming towards the end of the
surah We start the finale, he says وَمَا
And this
life is just a lot of distractions and
play and time that's being wasted True life,
True life is going to be in
the hereafter Know that and feel comfortable with
that That's why the Prophet ﷺ is told
at the end of the last ayah وَالَّذِينَ
Those who continue to
strive in our sake and to reach us
To reach Allah SWT We will guide them
down our paths The paths of Allah SWT
Allah SWT stands by
those who strive for excellence As long as
you're striving for the sake of Allah SWT
He is with you He will guide you
Nothing is constant in this life but Him
SWT The Sahaba had to learn before the
decision of leaving Mecca to Medina happened That
nothing is constant in this life besides Allah
SWT Striving for His sake Everything else can
change Everything else is a variable Including the
country you live in Including the home that
you've built Everything can change And I can
tell you that they probably will And it's
just how life is And if you can
accept that The earlier you can accept that
the better And the Sahaba had to learn
Look all the Prophets before you performed Hijrah
Ya Muhammad you're going to perform Hijrah as
well And you'll never actually come back to
the place that you were born in And
all your ancestors were born in as well
You just won't It's okay because you have
Allah on your side Because you continue to
strive for the sake of Allah SWT تُخْتَمُ
I hope inshallah that was helpful and that
Surah Al-Ankabut is now clear to you
