Bismillah ar-Rahman ar-Rahim, walhamdulillahi rabbil alameen,
Allahumma salli wa sallim wa barik ala nabiyyina
wa habibina Muhammadin wa ala alihi wa sahbihi
ajma'in wa ba'd.
Ramadan Mubarak, kul aam wa antum bukhayr.
Alhamdulillah Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala has granted
us the blessing of witnessing another Ramadan.
It's hard to believe that we're in the
same situation that we were in last year.
It's also hard to stare at an empty
masjid again during Ramadan.
May Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala alleviate this
difficulty that we're going through and allow us
to enjoy our masajid again and witness Ramadan
the way we're used to witnessing it.
InshaAllah we'll never take it for granted ever
again.
Before I start with the lesson of today,
I'll just make a few notes.
First of all, inshaAllah, what we're going to
do this year is similar to what we
did last year.
It will be 11 raka'ah taraweeh.
We'll pray Isha' right after the adhan.
There'll be 8 raka'ah taraweeh and then
3 witr.
We'll recite the juz' within those raka'ah.
After that there'll be a dua inshaAllah during
the witr raka'ah.
We'll try and keep it around an hour
and 20-25 minutes, something like that inshaAllah.
Regarding whether you follow or not, that's something
I'll leave up to you to look into.
I'm not going to repeat the discussion that
occurred last year.
All the material regarding those who agree with
the concept or disagree with it exists online.
You can go ahead, listen to it and
make your own decision.
Either way, what we're trying to offer with
this broadcast is some comfort.
An environment, a Ramadan-like environment in the
house where the Quran is being recited, where
some duroos are being offered.
It just gives a feeling that I know
we all need.
I know that I do.
InshaAllah what I'm going to be doing maybe
25 minutes to half an hour before Isha
every day will be a continuation of what
I had started doing 2 years ago actually.
2 years ago I started something called surah
summaries where I would just take a surah
and summarize the concept of it.
Why Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala put all
these verses into one unit and called it
a surah.
Is there something that links all these verses
together?
Does a surah as a unit have a
purpose or a goal or a direction?
And they do.
The Quran is very well organized into clusters
of surahs that talk about specific topics and
they actually have a very beautiful synchrony and
rhythm that if you look at from afar
you see the bigger picture is extremely interesting
and very intriguing.
We had arrived last year at surat al
-Zukhruf.
That was the last one that I was
able to do.
It took me a bit to remember what
the last surah was.
I had to actually go back and look
at the last feed because I forgot.
But inshaAllah this year will continue.
We won't finish the Quran this year but
I'm going to try and make it to
the end of Juz Tabarak so that all
we have left at the end for next
year is Juz Amma.
I treat within these summaries that I give,
I treat each surah equally.
So maybe surat al-Asr is nothing similar
to surat al-Baqarah but still what they
do have in common is that they're both
a surah, each.
So there must be something specific about each
of them existing in the way that they
do.
And the point of doing these lessons is
to try and help you understand the surah
as a whole.
See it from afar, see the bigger picture
of the surah and see how it works
with the surahs that surround it before and
after it.
So that when you go and you read
the surah you have a compass, you have
an idea of what the surah is trying
to teach.
So you're looking for those lessons and it's
easier to actually benefit from it, it's easier
to connect to the Quran that way.
I found this to be extremely helpful for
myself.
I know that it's something, the reason that
I'm doing this is because I've been asked
the same question by so many people throughout
the years.
Not to do this, but the question of
what is this surah talking about?
Why is this surah important?
What is the message that I'm supposed to
take from it?
And I found that the way that we
are taught, the way that we are brought
up within this era, we like to see
some organization of things.
And I think it's perfectly reasonable for us
to offer that because the Quran definitely has
that within it.
So the surah that we're going to be
starting with today, insha'Allah, is Surat al
-Dukhan.
Surat al-Dukhan exists within the 8th cluster
of surahs in the Quran.
So we went through the first 7, and
now we're in the 8th cluster of surahs,
and they're called al-Hawamim.
Al-Hawamim, the reason that they're called that
is because all the surahs begin with Hamim,
beginning with Ghafir and ending with al-Ahqaf.
And there are 7 surahs.
What their purpose is, is giving advice and
warnings regarding serving this deen.
If you go through the clusters and their
purposes and their directions, you'll find that at
this point in the Quran, Allah Subh'anaHu
Wa Ta-A'la is talking about serving
him, servicing the deen.
And before he goes into the details, these
7 surahs give some very important pieces of
advice, landmarks on the way, and things to
be aware of.
And then a law at the end, the
last surah is a law.
And that's basically what the Hawamim are about.
So we did the first 5 surahs, today
we'll do the 6th.
The first 3 are the pieces of advice.
Ghafir gives the advice of taking your da
'wah to those who don't want to take
it.
And explain to the best of your ability
and keep your connection with Allah Subh'anaHu
Wa Ta-A'la as you do it.
And that's really all you're asked to do.
Surah al-Fussilat teaches us that the strongest
da'wah is through actions, not through words.
Surah al-Shura talks about one of the
most important concepts we need to hold on
to as we perform da'wah, which is
our reference.
The fact that we have a strong reference.
We refer to Allah Subh'anaHu Wa Ta
-A'la in that.
And our Ummah uses Shura amongst it to
hold on to that.
The 3 surahs after, the first 3, warn
us.
Surah al-Zukhruf gave us a warning of
becoming too materialistic.
Using materialistic values to judge ourselves and to
judge others and to judge the world around
us.
And that was the last surah I did
last year.
Surah al-Dukhan is the second warning within
this cluster of surahs.
It's a short one.
It's only 3 pages.
It's a Makki surah.
It's quite famous.
If you have an elderly person in your
family, you know that they like Surah al
-Dukhan.
They read it in different times.
There's really no clear evidence from the Prophet
ﷺ that it's authentic.
And it refers to any specific importance to
the surah.
But it's just been a widely accepted idea
that Surah al-Dukhan is of extreme importance.
The theme of Surah al-Dukhan is beware
of taking the issue lightly.
Beware of taking the concept of serving Allah
Subh'anaHu Wa Ta-A'la, serving the
Deen and Al-Akhirah.
Beware of taking it lightly.
Beware of allowing indifference and play and distractions.
Beware of allowing those to take you away
from seeing this Deen and seeing the Al
-Akhirah for what it actually is.
If we get too comfortable, if we become
too confident and certain about our safety and
about our futures, that can be a problem.
That's an illusion.
It's al-Dukhan.
It's an illusion that can allow us to
actually become less attentive.
We start taking something that's extremely important in
a light manner.
We don't give it the attention that it
deserves.
And that's what Surah al-Dukhan does.
Surah al-Dukhan reminds us that you need
to take this extremely seriously.
This is no plain matter.
This is very serious.
Surah al-Dukhan is the fifth Surah from
Surah al-Hawami.
We're in the eighth group of Surahs in
the Qur'an.
We've divided the Qur'an into groups of
Surahs.
Now we're in the eighth group, Surah al
-Hawami.
It's a group of Surahs whose goal is
to provide advice and warnings in the way
of serving the Deen of Allah.
Surah al-Hawami is the first group of
Surahs.
It's a group of Surahs that provide advice
in this way.
Surah al-Ghathir gives us advice on how
to go about inviting those who dispute.
And how to stay in contact with Allah
while we're doing that.
And nothing else is required of us.
Surah al-Fusra teaches us that inviting people
to work is the basis.
Its voice is louder than the voice of
speech.
Surah al-Shura reminds us that our reference
is strong.
So we have to stick to that reference.
That's why it's called al-Shura.
This is what the Ummah of Islam does.
The next three Surahs are warning Surahs.
The last Surah I talked about last year
was Surah al-Zukhruf.
Surah al-Zukhruf warns us of materialism.
It warns us that the laws of materialism
oppress us.
So we judge the world through these material
lenses.
So we perish, just as those before us
perished.
Surah al-Dukhan warns us of playing.
It warns us of doubting.
Doubting leads to playing.
Playing leads to easing with issues of great
importance.
So we are surprised on the Day of
Judgment.
The issue is not a matter of playing.
Sometimes the feeling of reassurance, strength, and control
leads a person to ease with issues of
great importance.
Surah al-Dukhan is a warning Surah.
It has three pages.
It's not long, but it's very strong.
So when you start this Surah at the
beginning, Allah, the Most High, is the Protector
and the Clear Book.
We have sent it down on a blessed
night.
We were the warners.
In it, every wise thing is separated from
us.
We were the messengers of mercy from your
Lord.
Indeed, He is the All-Hearing, the All
-Knowing, Lord of the heavens and the earth
and all that is between them, if you
are certain.
The Surah begins where Allah, Subhanahu wa ta
'ala, is being very clear.
He descended the Book in a certain night.
In that night, we made all the important
decisions.
This is a command, amran.
This is a command from Us, Subhanahu wa
ta'ala.
Talking about Himself, Subhanahu wa ta'ala.
And then at the end of this first
patch of ayat, He says,
If you truly have yaqeen, if you have
certainty in what you're listening to, then you'll
understand that all these things that happened, Allah,
Subhanahu wa ta'ala, descending the Qur'an
upon the Prophet, the sharia, becoming a universal
law for mankind to follow, all of that
being a decree from God Himself, that this
is no game.
This is something that is very, very serious
and very clear, but you need to have
a certain level of certainty in it.
And then when you move forward in the
Surah, He says,
Allah ﷻ says, but the
problem with people is that they are in
a state of uncertainty and that is causing
them to play, يَلْعَبُونَ they're playing around because
they're not sure about something because they have
some reason to doubt what they're listening to
instead of taking the time to understand it
and to fill their minds and hearts with
what they need to fill it with they're
allowing that uncertainty and that doubt to make
them feel less inclined to take it seriously
and then they play so Allah ﷻ says,
فَارْتَقِبْ wait, wait and watch when you'll see
دُخَان مُبِين you'll see a very clear sign
in the sky it'll be smoke smoke, it's
a beautiful the surah is called smoke it's
a beautiful thing that is called smoke smoke
is usually the monument of illusion whenever a
magician comes out there's always smoke it's always
giving you an idea of illusion but the
Qur'an is saying it's not an illusion
we use it as an illusion but smoke
is actually evidence of something that's coming, it's
a warning when you see smoke you're not
supposed to think of illusion you're supposed to
think of a fire something that needs to
be taken very seriously so you can see
this beautiful paradox that the Qur'an is
trying to bring forward that some people are
using دُخَان as an illusion it means nothing
they continue to play they continue to be
in a state of indifference when really when
you see smoke you shouldn't think illusion you
should think fire and when you think fire
you don't take things lightly suddenly it becomes
very serious because it is a serious thing
those who are not sure of these issues
take it easy but those who are certain
and know that Allah has revealed the Qur
'an and that Allah has separated every wise
thing and that this is a matter from
Him they don't take it lightly but the
Qur'an teaches us the forms it says
بَلْهُمْ بَلْهُمْ the real problem is that people
are playing in doubt this is what they
use doubt as an excuse to distract and
play and to leave and to deal with
things in a correct way they use doubt
I swear to Allah till now my heart
is not full of certainty so he spends
his night playing and his day playing and
he doesn't pray Fard and he doesn't fast
for a month and he doesn't eat they
use doubt as an excuse the verse starts
السَّمَاءُ بِدُخَانٍ مُّبِينٍ دُخَان مُّبِين when will the
smoke be clear?
دُخَان دَائِمًا مُّبِين smoke is always clear but
humans are used to using smoke as a
sign of delusion always magic and so on
there is smoke but in reality smoke is
a warning for a fire to happen and
who is that who is easy with the
fire?
so smoke is the name of the surah
a beautiful and great name smoke is clear
on the Day of Resurrection a clear smoke
will come so some of them deal with
this smoke they deal with the fire and
some of them take the matter seriously and
look for a way to save themselves and
others and some of them deal with the
smoke they deal with delusion meaning smoke this
does not affect anyone this is the difference
the important one the surah continues and it
gives us the story of Theraon of course
Theraon has to be the person that's going
to be a part of this surah Theraon
no one was more alluded than Theraon no
one caused more allusion to his people than
Theraon he lied to them he made them
feel that he was more than what he
was he made them feel more than they
were he acted like he was God and
he had his people enslave a full race
of others feeling superior that's why the surah
when Musa Alayhi Salatu Wasalam would come and
speak to Theraon he would say أَلَّا تَعْلُوا
do not take yourself superior to God don't
don't feel too certain and comfortable because you
have money and you have wealth and you
have strength and you don't have to take
this seriously and Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala
punished Theraon and the verses of Surah Dukhan
comment on certain aspects of that not the
actual punishment but afterwards
Theraon and those who
stood by him they died and they left
behind them all the wealth that they used
to elude themselves to feel certain and to
feel this false sense of security refusing to
take what Musa is saying seriously they left
it all behind and it went to other
people and then the last ayah says فَمَا
بَكَتْ عَلَيْهِمُ السَّمَاءُ وَالْأَرْضُ the cosmos and the
earth didn't weep for them we're not the
center of this universe whether we exist or
we don't it doesn't really matter life will
continue with me or without me we may
feel that we're really important but true understanding
of life and reality is that moment when
it makes sense to you that you're not
it's when we figure out that I'm not
important I'm just I'm only important if Allah
thinks so so I have to serve him
but nothing else makes me of any importance
at all and when you realize that you
stop being arrogant you stop feeling that false
sense of security you stop you start taking
these things very seriously because you understand that
the world doesn't revolve around it doesn't revolve
around any of us Allah subhanahu wa ta
'ala is the center we're just we're here
because he allowed us to be فَمَا بَكَتْ
no one weeped for them they were forgotten
life continued and then Allah subhanahu wa ta
'ala states something beautiful وَمَا خَلَقْنَا السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ
وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا لَعِبِينَ مَا خَلَقْنَاهُمَا إِلَّا بِالْحَقَّ وَلَكِنَّ
أَكْثَرَهُمْ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ only a few times in
the Qur'an these verses came you can
find them here and I talked about them
each time he says subhanahu wa ta'ala
we did not create the cosmos and the
earth and play do you think this was
a game?
this is not a game we only مَا
خَلَقْنَاهُمَا إِلَّا بِالْحَقِّ we only created the cosmos
and the earth through حق through righteousness it
has a purpose of righteousness you're supposed to
serve righteousness here but many of them don't
know this is not a game you can't
run away from the usage of play in
surah al-dukhaan people are playing Allah subhanahu
wa ta'ala says I didn't create this
as a game don't treat it as a
game don't act like it's a game it's
not it's not don't use anything beware beware
of focusing in your life on the money
focusing on the status focusing on the fame
focusing and using deen for it or putting
it before your own deen this is not
a game this is not our story none
of this is about us this is about
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala that's why at
the end of the surah some of the
most scary verses in the Quran يَوْمَ لَا
indeed the day of judgment is the day
that everyone will be gathered and on that
day no one can benefit anyone else except
the ones that Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala
granted them his mercy and then it talks
about the tree of Zaqqum a tree why?
because trees are things that we take lightly
you take it lightly يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ see if
you can take this lightly see if يَوْمَ
الْقِيَامَةِ وَالْعِيَادُ بِاللَّهِ if you're looking at شَجَرَةَ
الزَّقُّومِ can you take that lightly?
is it a game?
إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ الْعَزِيزُ الْكَرِيمُ verses that are very
scary of شَجَرَةَ الزَّقُّومِ of the tree of
Zaqqum and those who are forced to eat
it and the pain that they and the
punishment that they endure because of it and
they're told at the end of it ذُقْ
you're the one who had the status and
had the wealth and joy you took it
lightly back then see, can you take it
lightly now?
no the surah ends فَارْتَقِبَ إِنَّهُم مُرْتَقِبُونَ the
last word in the surah is wait and
watch just like they're gonna wait and watch
فَارْتَقِبَ wait and watch they wanna take it
lightly you take it the way you think
you should and then watch and see what's
gonna happen next it's a scary surah, it's
a very heavy one but it's warning us
you can't take these things lightly you can't
take الأخرة lightly we can't be preoccupied with
play and indifference and distracted by things that
are not important from what's coming and there's
evidence of it دخان there's the evidence you
can see it's coming why are you taking
it lightly why are you playing when you
know there's a fire on its way no
one would do that I hope that was
beneficial and inshallah you continue with surah al
-jathiyah
