AI: Summary ©
with the Seerah of the Prophet ﷺ and
we had stopped at or we had talked
a little bit about Baya'atul Aqabah Thaniyah,
and I had shared with you the Articles
of the actual pledge itself and the series
of khutbahs I'll be sharing over the next
maybe a month or so Five six weeks
will be on this topic inshallah, so I
will go into more depth.
I'll dive a little bit more deeper into
it During the khutbahs, but I still think
it's important as we tell this story that
you Realize or recognize the significance of what
actually occurred and Ka'ab ibn Malik he
summarizes it by saying that He would say
he would say the following Meaning the people
in general they talk about Badr and how
important is the significance the battle of Badr
was but us the people of Ansar we
are significance that what we see significant is
the Baya'atul Aqabah who was there and
who pledged and then the importance of that
day because this this this pledge is what
allowed for the Prophet ﷺ to Make his
way from Mecca to Medina.
It started the story of Seerah as we
know it without this pledge.
I don't know what exactly I don't know
how Seerah would look I don't know what
the stories would how they would be told
if if this didn't happen didn't happen and
It was not a formality This this pledge
was not a formality.
They didn't go into this knowing that it
was going to work out No, this was
a meeting that was extremely important.
This may work out.
This may not work out The the agreement
was that the last night of Mina midnight.
They would Meet very close to where Jamratul
Aqabah is today There's a message called Masjidul
Baya'at, which is which is where this
actually occurred If you go to the Hajj,
you can always go and visit it and
the Prophet ﷺ Instructed them that they stay
scattered as Amongst the tents of the people
of Yathrib mean he didn't want them You
know all the Muslims to be clumped up
in one spot just be spread out and
the whole caravan that was coming No one
wake up anyone else up if they don't
wake up on their own then then just
leave them whoever if you wake up and
you come then you do if you don't
then that's on you and there was a
reason for this because you know, they were
trying to The Prophet ﷺ's goal here was
to achieve full secrecy Within this within this
you know on your deal So Ali ﷺ
he came with him was only his uncle
Al-Abbas Ibn Abdul Muttalib and Al-Abbas
did not come As a Muslim but he
came as the leader of Bani Hashim The
Prophet ﷺ had to make it clear to
the people that he was talking to that
he had protection He was not coming begging
for anything.
He's the leader of his clan still He
backed him up and he let Al-Abbas
speak first and Al-Abbas that's what he
said Basically, I explained I kind of shared
that with you last week He basically explained
that if you if you're gonna take him
and protect him then fine Otherwise, he's our
he's my nephew and he will always be
protected.
He always has a spot with us He
always he's all you'll always be safe with
us So he's not Yeah and he coming
to you with nothing and that was important
because the Prophet ﷺ did not want Them
to think that he was in a position
of weakness and that he was he's begging
for anything which he wasn't Once Al-Abbas
said that They turned to the Prophet ﷺ
Al-Bara' ibn Ma'rur turned to the
Prophet ﷺ and said Ya Rasool Allah, maybe
you've heard from your uncle فخذ لنفسك وربك
ما أرد Ask for yourself and for your
Lord what you want.
We want to hear from you So the
Prophet ﷺ would dive into the five points
that you that you see up there He
would ask for five things ﷺ These are
very difficult topics Almost Yeah, they're borderline impossible
to to ask for and almost impossible to
actually say yes to He's telling them number
one أسمع الطعة بالمنشطة والمكره Meaning for better
or for worse I'm the leader you obey
you adhere.
I bring I teach I'm not coming as
a consultant I'm not coming as an advisor.
I'm coming as a leader and if you
if you're not willing to accept that that
I don't come at all That was probably
the biggest of them all Is that the
Prophet ﷺ is coming from a foreign country
or foreign city to Yathrib And he's telling
them I'm coming and I'm not I'm not
here on an advisory status.
I'm here coming I'm going to be the
leader and I'm going to give commands and
orders and you're going to listen And I
tell you this is how we're going to
do things is we're going to has to
come back to me And all of this
is very important obviously for a stamp to
function The second one is you're going to
You're going to put your wealth and you
need to commit your wealth.
If you're not going to commit your wealth
We can't build the country.
I can't build an army We cannot get
anything done your money whether you have a
lot of it or you have a little
of it I'm gonna put your money أمر
المعروف أنها الموكره I'm going to come and
change some of the social values The social
values are going to be shook a little
bit.
I'm not gonna leave things as are I'm
not coming to tell you I'm not coming
to you with the premise that everything you're
doing is great No, we're not a lot
of change is going to occur and you
have to be on board with it You
have to be willing to help that change
happen.
Not just on an individual level, but on
a social level It goes beyond you just
being willing to listen to what I have
to say We have to actually spread this
amongst people and we have to change the
norms of society You're not going to be
afraid from anyone aside from Allah and you're
going to commit yourself to this Priority you're
going to prioritize this message.
You're not going to compromise any of the
values You're not going to be thinking about
what this person thinks or what that Country
thinks or what what the consequences of doing
this is going to be.
It doesn't matter The priority is for this
haqq to be adhered to and spread and
whatever comes afterwards we deal with We're not
going to compromise anything.
We're not going to prioritize something else We're
not going to take into consideration anything that
will cause us to change the course that
we're going to take Meaning you have to
be brave and willing to put up with
whatever.
Allah is going to come from this He
knew alayhi salatu wasalam and so did they.
He knew He knew from day one.
He knew from the day he met Waraqa
bin Naufi' Way at the beginning Way at
the beginning when he came down the mountain
and Khadija took him to her cousin and
he looked and told him No one has
come to his people with what you've come
with They're going to fight you, they're going
to remove you, it's an uphill struggle for
you from now on This is not going
to be easy So he knew this alayhi
salatu wasalam, but he needed to make sure
that the people in front of him knew
this as well so In the fifth one
antamna'oonee watansuroonee kama tamna'oona watahmoona ooladakum
You're going to protect me and you're going
to...
it's not about himself, his life alayhi salatu
wasalam The concept really is protection of the
message He represents the message alayhi salatu wasalam
He is the receiver of wahi, of revelation,
if he ceases to exist then so does
Islam So the concept really was not to
protect him specifically as a person It wasn't
a selfish request, it was the idea of
protecting Islam as a message So not only
are you going to Prioritize this message and
not care about consequences as long as you're
doing the right thing, you're not going to
compromise anything You're going to protect this message
with your lives This is a huge...
the ask that he's come to them with
alayhi salatu wasalam is Destructive, really in essence
is destructive of what their lives once were
Their lives won't be the same.
When they say yes to this, if they
do, then nothing is going to be the
same afterwards Everything is going to be different
and they knew that and he knew that
alayhi salatu wasalam He didn't sugarcoat any of
it.
He didn't...
like he could have used a lot of...
when I read this The saying that I
have up there for you It always came
to mind that there's so many other ways
for him to ask this that it would
be a little bit more with softer language
He could have used softer language alayhi salatu
wasalam for sure and still achieve the the
objective with softer language Like using the words
fil manshat wal makrah, whether you like it
or you don't like it fil yusri wal
usr, whether you're rich or you're poor la
ta'khudkum fil laahi laumatu la'im You're
not going to ever allow anyone shame you
or make you feel embarrassed because you did
the right...
He could have used different language, the language
that I am kind of using myself when
I'm explaining this to you It would probably
make the pill a little bit easier to
swallow, but he didn't.
He used extremely difficult language He was very
direct because he knew what was going to
come from this He didn't know for sure
what they were going to be called, but
he could foresee Badr and Uhud and Khandaq
and Khaibar.
He knew all this was coming.
He knew that they were going to say
yes This is going to be a long
journey.
There's gonna be a lot.
You're gonna give up a lot And of
course when he was finished giving his file
Demands someone in the group, he called out
wa maa tha lanaa in fa'alnaa wa
maa lanaa in fa'alnaa What do we
get in return for all of this?
In all the books of seerah, it's just
one word lakumul jannah You get jannah Period.
End of sentence, new paragraph in the book
of seerah No elaboration from him alayhi salam
at all If they're going to take this,
they have to understand how clear cut this
equation is How simple the deal is And
they have to be willing to accept it
with no strings attached and nothing additional They
could have asked for more They could have
said, well, once you pass away, who becomes
the leader?
We need to have the sovereignty of our
city We never want to be They could
have asked for certain things In terms of
how much they wanted of fayt or ghanima
Of loot or bounty from battles They could
have asked for something But they didn't They
didn't ask for anything They accepted it as
is And the Prophet alayhi salam was not
willing to offer anything anyways Like had they
asked for anything He would have said no
They could have asked for something But he
wasn't willing to offer anything Because offering anything
was going to be a compromise They knew
this coming in Because Musa alayhi salam told
them He doesn't compromise anything You come to
Islam and you accept it as it is
You're going to come to him alayhi salam
You don't have the upper hand He does
And if you don't understand that, then I'll
go back to him Musa alayhi salam for
a full year had been preparing them You
have not met him alayhi salam But those
who know him He is not someone who
compromises or negotiates When it comes to Islam
itself So either you accept it as it
is And you accept his terms Or you
don't Let me know if you don't Then
I'll go back and I won't waste your
time anymore So when he said that alayhi
salam It's funny, when you look at the
life of the Ansar When you look at
their stories None of them held office Of
any sort They weren't the leaders of anything
Even after he passed away You don't find
any of their names As a Khalifa Or
as even a Governor Of a province They
didn't They all just sacrificed themselves Throughout his
life alayhi salam And then sacrificed themselves after
his life alayhi salam Which is why Before
he passed away He would repeat these One
of the signs Of your Iman is if
you love the Ansar A sign of your
Nifaq is if you dislike the Ansar And
you would speak of them alayhi salam Allahummar
hamil ansara Wa abnaa al-ansari He would
make dua for seven generations For them alayhi
salam You would speak of them with true
love alayhi salam You would say lawla al
-ijra lakuntum ra'am min al-ansari If
it wasn't for the fact that I immigrated
From Makkah, Madinah, I would have wanted to
be amongst The Ansar And the reason that
he said that alayhi salam Because of this
Because no one would accept this Who accepts
this deal?
Who takes this deal?
There's nothing in it for them In dunya
at least There's everything for them There's everything
in it for them in akhirah But how
many people are you going to run to
in life That are willing to take their
part of the deal In akhirah How many
people are you aware of that are willing
to take Their part of the deal only
in akhirah And nothing in dunya It's a
rare quality It's a very rare quality And
the Ansar possessed it And because they did
They are of the high status that they
have within our deen RadhiAllahu anhum ajma'in
So the Prophet alayhi salam says Walakum ul
-jannah So people started to make noise
They started talking amongst each other And someone
says Ya Rasool Allah nubai'uk And someone
has prepared themselves They want to perform the
bay'ah They want to go and pledge
to the Prophet alayhi salam All that he
asked for Before he did, a man would
speak Ibn Tayhan When I narrated the hadith
About him specifically He was a wealthy sahabi
from the Ansar And he had a question
And it was a very good one Ya
Rasool Allah Inna baynana wa bayna bani qawmina
Wa bayna qabail al yahoodi mu'ahadat Fa
in azharaka Allah Wa taraktana Wa nakunu qad
afsadna Inna baynana wa baynahum Faman asna' The
problem is, Ya Rasool Allah We have a
lot of treaties between us And the people
in Yathrib And the tribes of Ahlul Kitab
That exist Banu Qaynu Qa'in, Banu Nadhir,
Banu Qurayza And other tribes There's a lot
of treaties If you come to us and
we make you leader Then we are going
to sever a lot of those treaties We
lose a lot of the setup That has
allowed us to survive And actually function Over
the last couple of centuries We're going to
sever all this for you So if it
works out Let's say it works out for
you And you're very successful And then you
go back to Mecca You leave us with
nothing You leave us out dry It doesn't
work for us So what's going to happen
when it works out He was asking something
different He was asking If you come to
us and we support you And you're successful
then what You leave He didn't like that
idea He thought that wasn't You're going to
leave us And then Mecca, Medina is all
ruined You've severed all the treaties And you've
achieved your goal You go back to Mecca
You build your empire And Yathrib is a
mess And we don't have anything And he
had a point So the Prophet He acknowledged
And he recognized What Abu al-Haytham was
asking So he answered him قال لا بل
الدم الدم والهدم الهدم أنا منكم وأنتم مني
أسالم من سالمتم وأحارب من حاربتم He said
الدم الدم Our blood now is one والهدم
الهدم Meaning I will live with you and
I will die with you I will live
with you And I will be buried in
Medina I'll never leave ever again Once I
come to you I am amongst you till
the end I will draw peace treaties With
those who you have peace with And I
will fight with you those who fight you
Meaning once I come I'm one of you
خلاص And that's what he He knew he
was committing to this That was hard He
knew that's it This is the end He's
never going to be a resident of Mecca
ever again The place where he was born
And his father and grandfather And great grandfather
And great great grandfather Are going back to
Ismail All born in Mecca Mecca is his
home it's his country It's where he identified
It's where he belongs It's where he got
married It's where he had his children It's
where he lived his life He's acknowledging that
Once you say yes to this That's it
I'm committed to you till the end Till
the end Whatever that end may be Whatever
time carries for us in the future I'm
with you till the end But when he
said They shouldn't have Because they're waking people
up It's the middle of the night But
they got all excited So people said Put
your hand out we want to pledge So
for the second time people are coming And
now another person stands up As'ad bin
Zubarah As'ad has been quiet the whole
time As'ad is the first person the
Prophet A.S. met In the Hajj of
the 10th year So when he came and
he spoke to the six people Who were
shaving their heads As'ad was the leader
As'ad is the one who granted the
Prophet A.S. permission to speak To them
There's a custom to these things You can't
just come and talk to people if they
don't grant you permission So As'ad said
go ahead and speak He listened He's the
one who accepted and he's the one who
moved all of this He brought Mus'ab
to his home He orchestrated the Dawah that
happened in Yathrib He orchestrated the number of
people That came through the caravan All of
this was As'ad's work He's the only
Muslim for maybe Three and a half years
tops He'll die at twenty to twenty two
Twenty three years old That's it He accepted
Islam in the Hajj of the 10th year
He will die less than a year After
the Prophet A.S. makes it back to
Medina That's it As'ad lived a very
short time But he did enough during that
time Why live longer?
Why live longer?
Literally everything that came after Is going to
be in his Mizan The Sahaba always spoke
of As'ad Because of How critical his
role was So just as people were getting
ready to perform their pledge As'ad stopped
And he said No, hold on Calm down
And he said He gave a small speech
He said indeed we have not Made this
long journey on the camels To him Risking
ourselves And risking our lives And compromising our
position Amongst the Arab Except we know he
is Rasulullah وإن إخراجه اليوم مفارقة العرب كافة
And today If you say yes and he
comes to you Then you are now putting
yourself On the opposite rails Of all of
the Arab You are accepting the animosity Of
the Arab, all of them Quraysh and all
those who are a part of Quraysh's Allegiance
which is the majority of the Arab So
the moment you take him You are now
putting yourselves in opposition to the Arab وقتلوا
خياركم وأن تعبدكم السيوف The best of you
are probably going to die In this process
And swords will find their way into your
flesh You are going to lose a lot
A lot is coming This is As'ad,
he is a 22 year old young man
This is wisdom When you accept this You
are now making enemies all across Everyone is
going to be your enemies You are going
to lose the best of you And he
was right He was spot on وتعبدكم السيوف
The swords of the Arab Are going to
take pieces of you فإما أنتم قوم تصبرون
على السيوف إذا مستكم وعلى قتل خياركم وعلى
مفارقة العرب كافة فخذوه وأجركم على الله So
either you are people who are Perseverant and
you are going to put up With the
fact that you are going to lose the
people that you love You are going to
be the enemies of the Arab They are
going to bring war to you And if
you are ready then take them And your
reward will be with Allah سبحانه وتعالى وإما
أنتم قوم تخافون من أنفسكم خيفة فذروه فهو
آذر عند الله Or you are people who
have A little bit of hesitation and doubt
And you fear the Arab And you fear
what may come Then it is best for
you to leave him And at least you
can tell Allah That we didn't Give our
word and then go back You can't give
your word to him today and then go
back So Those who are standing there from
The Ansar Amongst them was Al-Bara' ibn
Maroor And Abu Al-Haytham, the person who
asked the question فقالوا يَا أَسْعَدْ يَبْنَا زُرَارًا
آمِطْ عَنَّا يَدَكْ They told As'ad Get
out of the way As'ad stood between
them and the Prophet One last time Listen
carefully If you do this If you do
this You're giving up You're going to lose
a lot This is going to be very
difficult You can't go halfway Once you say
yes, you're all in Are you all in?
Do you understand what all in means?
You're going to lose your loved ones It's
going to be war and enemies And ongoing
sacrifice Are you ready for this?
If you're not ready, say you're not ready
He can stay with his family We don't
have to meet Allah And say we gave
our word And took it back So he's
standing between them and the Prophet So the
elder says يَا أَسْعَدْ يَبْنَا زُرَارًا آمِطْ عَنَّا
يَدَكْ Move your hand out of the way
فَوَاللَّهِ لَا نَذَرُ هَٰذِهِ الْبَيْعَةَ وَلَا نَسْتَقِيلُهَا We
swear that we will not leave this pledge
And we will not back down from this
pledge قالوا The narrators of seerah فَذَهَبُوا يَتَقَاتَلُونَ
When they moved
us out of the way They started pushing
and shoving Who wanted to do the bay
'ah first Who wanted to pledge And put
their hand in the hand of the Prophet
The person who was describing It seemed to
us That they felt That whoever did the
pledge first Was going to enter Jannah first
Because that's what they were That's what they
were promised They were promised Jannah and nothing
else The only thing they got from him
Was that once you come to us You
stay with us You don't leave us You
don't come to us when it's hard And
leave us when it's easy And he offered
them that And that's fair It's only fair
that he would stay with them But aside
from that, nothing else And the question that
we always ask أَوَفَّ الْأَنصَار Did the Ansar
fulfill their part of the deal Did they
see through their part of the deal Yes
They saw through their part of the deal
And because they saw their part through Allah
He saw for them his part through And
they are of the status that The Prophet
told us Before he passed away So they
performed the Bai' يُبَايِعُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ On the
fight What is Bai' Bai' is when you
offer a covenant or a pledge Meaning you
give your word on something You give your
word You are being asked to fulfill a
certain Criteria or to commit To a number
of articles or certain Requests and you offer
your word That for sure I will do
these For as long as I am alive
Or for whatever time we agree to And
it was a way The Arabs were able
to establish An agreement to something They didn't
have They rarely wrote contracts It was Islam
in Medina that started to say يَا لَذِينَ
آمَنُوا إِذَا تَدَيَنْتُمْ بِدَيْنٍ إِلَىٰ أَجْرٍ مُسَمَّنٍ فَاكْتُبُوهُ
The Islamic community said Write these things down
Find someone who knows how to write And
document things But the Arabs before that was
always Bai' Bai' meaning it was just your
word You shook on it And There were
women amongst the group And the Prophet took
their Bai' Without shaking their hands They took
the Bai' with the Prophet He didn't shake
their hands But it was a verbal contract
Yes we are in this and with this
till the end As they are doing this
The Prophet Points out That he needs amongst
them Twelve Nuqaba Al-Naqeeb in Arabic is
someone Who is going to be Responsible for
a smaller group And report back to a
leader That's what Al-Naqeeb means So the
Prophet said I need twelve Nuqaba I need
twelve leaders amongst you So nine of them
were from Al-Khazraj And three of them
were from Al-Aus That day And he
told them أنتم كفلاء على قومكم وأنا كثير
على قومي You are responsible for For the
people of Yathrib And I am responsible for
the Muhajireen coming from Makkah There has to
be some Structure some way to be To
figure out liability I will take responsibility For
the behaviors of the people coming from Makkah
If anything goes wrong it comes back to
me And if it's a financial problem Whatever
it is we will take care of it
And you are responsible for your people When
a mistake happens So there is always a
way to fix problems Or to come to
agreements on disputes And as we are doing
this When you think about this meeting This
meeting had everything That a proper meeting needs
There was first of all an agreement On
time and method And everyone stuck to it
There was a certain place, a certain time
Everyone showed up on time And they showed
up in the right place For this meeting
to happen The way it was agreed Second
thing there was an introduction Al-Abbas spoke
first there was a clear introduction Number three
there was a clear ask Meaning what the
meeting was for Was talked about immediately It
didn't take hours until they actually brought up
If you attend meetings you know what I
mean You know what I'm talking about Sometimes
you meet and by the time you actually
get to the point of the meeting It's
been an hour and a half and you're
tired And you're not even listening to what
the person is saying And you're looking at
the clock and you want to get out
So nothing actually ends up happening It was
a very quick introduction Right to the point
There was a negotiation back and forth The
people of the Ansar had a few questions
He had answers, there were some concerns And
then they Signed the treaty And then the
plan for what's going to happen after Twelve
Nuqaba from your side I'm from my side
And then we're going to start moving people
from Mecca to Medina And they agreed to
how this was going to happen I send
them over to you Mus'ab and As
'ad receive them And then they are Sent
and dispersed within Yathrib within the homes that
are available for them So they can find
a place to live We're going to talk
about this in more depth But you have
to think about this People are moving This
is a demographic change Hundreds of people are
going to move in a very short period
of time From one city to the other
Back during a time where this was not
easy We didn't Even in the times we
live in today A little bit of a
A small migration Of people from the GTA
to this city Tanked it And they do
it again You won't find a place to
live anymore You'll be paying $5,000 To
sleep in someone's car It would become ridiculous
Because you need space to live So these
people moving from Mecca to Medina They had
to have a place to go There had
to be an agreement of how this was
going to happen Who was going to be
responsible on the other side to receive them
To give them placements And then help them
to find a job to live Or else
it was going to completely fail So they
had to have a plan Of how this
was going to happen So the Prophet s
.a.w. was in this meeting It's a
perfect meeting Everything that you need in this
meeting occurred The reason I'm saying this is
I'm not fond of meetings At all I'm
not fond of meetings or board meetings specifically
And one of the worst things Is that
they're useless Most of the time Unless there's
a lot of effort put into the meeting
They're completely useless They sit for hours and
hours They have no idea at the end
What exactly was established in this meeting I
love Baitul Aqabah Very simple Hour and a
half Everything is finished A full agreement It's
very difficult What was being asked for What
was offered The method of how it was
going to be executed Was all established within
this hour and a half They actually got
something done This efficiency Is actually Praiseworthy Especially
the younger brothers and sisters As you become
more involved In the community You start being
put on smaller boards Committees Make sure that
this is something you take into consideration Make
sure that your meetings Are effective and efficient
Things come out of them People will stop
wanting to be a part of them And
it will actually Tank the work of whatever
Organization Initiative that you're trying to launch Or
improve As they were finishing it all up
A man Standing on a mountain Or a
small hill Would scream He would say Muhammad
is Pledging with people To kill you To
fight you He's standing a bit far On
a hill He can't really see Who they
are But he recognized the Prophet So he
made this call He's calling at the top
of his lungs So the Prophet tells people
Everyone back to their tents Exactly where they
were You'll find this in the books of
Seerah It's narrated and I like to share
it Then one of the Ansar Or a
few of the Ansar Allah said to Rasulullah
People are all sleeping Do we just take
our swords And just go after the Mushrikeen
Especially the people of Mecca Who have been
trying to kill you For the last 13
or 12 years of your life It's the
middle of the night We're already being exposed
Do we just take our swords Since it's
going to be war anyways Might as well
start now He said We were not commanded
to do this That's not a part of
what I was taught to do So no,
we don't go after people Sleeping in their
beds We don't do that Regardless of what
their opinions are Regardless of how they treat
us We don't go after people in their
homes We don't go after people Who have
allowed us in their cities And they think
that they're safe when we are there And
then we wait until they go to sleep
And then we go after them and we
murder them Because we don't agree with them
Or because they have shown opposition To our
thoughts Or to the way we are And
this is not something that I had to
pull out No, go read any book of
Sira And read the chapter of Bait al
-Aqab You'll find this narrated in all of
them You'll find this as a specific incident
That happened in all of them Where he
had to say these words We were not
commanded to do this So he put his
sword back And they all went back to
their tents And they went to sleep Now
what would happen In the morning After this
guy made the sound of the alarm Quraysh
is now very concerned So they come and
they start asking People in the tents Did
you go and meet Muhammad last night?
Now Because The Muslims were Sleeping in the
same tents that the Mushrikeen were When they
asked the Mushrikeen Who they were with in
the tent Did you go last night and
meet Muhammad The answer was no And they
weren't lying Because they didn't And they had
no idea that this guy Who was sleeping
beside them in a bed Went and came
back Everyone went to sleep last night at
8 We woke up in the morning No
one left any So when they said these
things They were honest And they weren't able
to identify Who actually did any of this
Because the Muslims Had blended in They were
amongst the caravan They weren't living in their
own tents Where the tent was seen empty
They were dispersed amongst the groups They quietly
came back Everyone in the morning was being
questioned No I remember at 8 o'clock
I woke up They were all there None
of us met Muhammad They weren't able to
catch anything And as And of course it's
the night So the next day everyone is
putting away their tents And going back So
it was very hard for Quraish to perform
a proper investigation They were able to hold
back two people They were able to hold
back Al-Munzir ibn Amr And Sa'ad
ibn Ubadah They were able to hold them
back And they were able to point out
No, no, you did something last night We
have evidence, someone saw you They were able
to hold them back And Al-Munzir ibn
Amr was able to get away and leave
Sa'ad wasn't They beat him up They
beat him up And tried to get him
to explain what happened Because they didn't know
what happened And they wouldn't know by the
way what happened until at least a year
later The Quraish would not come to conclusion
Of actually what occurred that night Until it
became obvious to them from the numbers When
it was observable The number of people who
had left Mecca And now were residing in
Medina But they couldn't find out beforehand So
they kept on beating him up Interrogating him,
trying to get him to admit And Abbas
ibn Amr would come by And see Sa
'ad Basically cuffed and held And he came
and told him أَلَيْسَ مِنْ أَحْدٍ فِي مَكَّتَكَ
مِمَّن تَمُرُّ تِجَارَتُهُ عَلَيْكَ Is there no one
in Mecca Whose caravan comes by your area
That you basically protect فَقَالَ بَلَهَ Yes there
is فَقَالَ كَلِّمْهُ Go to this person And
ask them for their protection And ask them
to intervene So he did He spoke to
one of the leaders of Mecca Whose caravan
would come by His route all the time
And he asked for help And the man
would come and set him free And Sa
'ad ibn Ubadah would make his way back
To Yathrib Up till now that's his name
It's called Yathrib And the whole issue would
get lost They wouldn't be able to figure
it out But because of this Because of
this alarm that was sounded that night From
this gentleman They became much more serious About
assassinating him Meaning this conversation About killing the
Prophet Went from being We have to get
this done at some point We have to
fix this problem To we need a plan
We need an actual plan to get rid
of him And he knew that So for
the next 7 to 8 months To a
year He has to stay very low He
has to stay out of sight And he
has to lay low At the same time
He has to coordinate This massive immigration From
people from Mecca To Medina And make sure
they get there safely And these are the
3 objectives Of this migration He has to
make sure That there is safety of departure
He has to make sure that the person
who is leaving Mecca Can leave safely Because
once Quraysh catches someone Who is trying to
leave They are going to deprive them from
leaving Quraysh will kill people on the way
out And they did And some people that
is what happened to them But the majority
made it But some people it didn't work
out This was not a bullet proof plan
But for the majority it did work He
had to make sure that the road was
secure That on the way they were not
going to be kidnapped Or enslaved or murdered
And then he had to make sure that
when they got to Yathrib They were going
to be stable They were going to be
able to actually live Where they were going
They had a place for them to stay
It's not like today where you can just
Rent a motel or a hotel And take
care of yourself No that's not how this
works Going to a city that's not that
big It's not that successful financially So they
don't have a lot of extra places For
people to live There has to be that
stability So these are the 3 elements Which
the Prophet peace be upon him Is going
to be working on He peace be upon
him Himself is going to be the last
Person to leave Mecca Because if he leaves
first It's like he's leaving all of his
followers behind And he would never do that
So he had to make sure that everyone
who was able To migrate Would make their
way to Yathrib and then he would be
the last person To arrive peace be upon
him Knowing that some people were left behind
That they just couldn't leave There was no
way he couldn't help them leave And he
had people Specifically Hired for these jobs For
all 3 objectives For each of them there
was someone Or a group of people who
were hired to take care of it Whether
it's safety departure Like Marthad and Umar Or
it's the route and there was a number
of people Who did that And I'll tell
you a little bit about them Once we
talk about his hijrah And then stability in
Yathrib It was Mus'ab and As'ad
And the 12 Muqaba' That were responsible For
the distribution of people Once they arrived there
So what we're going to do is talk
about A few stories about some of the
muhajireen Some of the people who actually left
from Mecca to Medina Because this was a
difficult ordeal For most of them Probably one
of the most famous stories Of muhajireen is
the story of Abu Salama And Um Salama
Abu Salama and Um Salama are amongst the
earliest Muslims And as you know Abu Salama
years later will pass away And Um Salama
will become One of the wives of the
Prophet The mother of believers But during this
period They were amongst The early muhajireen people
who wanted to perform hijrah So Abu Salama
took his wife and his son Salama obviously
And they made their way out There were
certain departure spots And certain timings That they
had agreed to To make it as easy
and as safe as possible So they followed
all those rules But unfortunately that didn't work
The family Of both of them Abu Salama
and Um Salama Somehow figured it out They
had been watching them closely Once they moved
out Because it's not It's hard to go
unnoticed When you're packing a few camels And
getting on them and leaving your home It's
not like everyday You're getting into your car
and going somewhere When you pack a few
camels And everything else is walking distance Camels
are left for farther distances So Abu Salama
and Um Salama In the middle of the
night They get themselves ready They're on their
way The two families intervene They cut them
off Abu Salama is able to escape Um
Salama is taken by her family And the
family of Abu Salama Takes the boy With
them And Abu Salama's family now is completely
Torn He can't come back, they'll kill him
He has to go to Medina Um Salama
is basically held captive By her own family
And her son is left with her husband's
family And this would go on For around
a year For around a full year Um
Salama would come by The neighborhood of her
Husband's family Begging for her son Begging to
see her son in tears on a daily
basis This would go on for months upon
months Until finally Someone in her Husband's family
would feel Some degree of empathy Towards her
And he would give her Abu Salama got
ill He got very ill Because they basically
dislocated Both of his shoulders At a very
young age They were pulling him back and
forth Between the families So he was injured
And back then the medicine wasn't great So
he grew up and he struggled a little
bit With mobility And children, no one takes
care of a child As much as his
mother does So he was not well cared
for During this period And I think the
person on the father's Or the husband's family
noticed that So he gave the kid back
to Um Salama Um Salama took her son
And started to walk Towards Medina Towards Yathrib
She carries her son and starts to walk
This is her only chance She's not going
to be able Her family are letting her
leave the house Because they know she's not
going to go Anywhere without her son That's
why she's able to leave But now that
she has her son Her family will never
let her leave So this is their only
chance to make it to Yathrib So she
just begins to walk She's planning on walking
400km To Yathrib With a boy, with a
toddler And it's because of These stories by
the way Someone like Um Salama became Um
Al-Mu'mineen It's because of that It's because
of the stories Each of Ummahat Al-Mu'mineen
Each of the mothers of the believers Of
the Prophet's wives Has a story A background
story If you go to you'll find out
why Allah SWT chose her for this Um
Salama, this is where her heart was She's
going to Yathrib With the acceptance of people
Without it With enough provision to make it
Without it makes no difference She starts to
walk As she's walking He wasn't a Muslim
at the time He accepted Islam quite later
in the story He's coming back From a
business trip And he And he sees her
And he knows her because they're related What
are you doing?
Walking in the middle of the desert What
are you doing?
Where are you going?
I'm taking my faith And I'm running away
with it from you From people like you
Where exactly are you going?
I'm going to Yathrib I'm going to where
my husband is To Yathrib I'm going alone
Where's your provision?
Where's the food and drink That's going to
get you there?
Where's your camel That's going to carry you
there?
It's whatever Allah SWT provides for me And
she keeps on walking This is not appropriate
So he would get off his His horse
And he would ask her And her son
to get on And he would take them
He would take them The 400 km trip
To Yathrib I have yet to see Anyone
Who was as noble As Integrity Or It's
hard to Translate this word into English Because
I don't think Chivalry is a word that
is used I don't know if it's chivalry
It's when you're Someone who's just of class
Where you're not There's no aspect of you
That cares about issues Of low Of low
value Like where you're not looking at something
That you shouldn't look at There's this nobility
to you I almost think nobility comes from
I never looked it up I don't know
if it's from the origin of the word
But it's probably the closest thing Just being
noble So she said he never looked back
He walked the whole time He never looked
back once Whenever I
asked I needed to go to the bathroom
Or take my child He would get the
horse down He would walk and give me
only his back And so I called him
And he would walk backwards Your
husband stays over there And he kept me
on the horse And he went back He
figured it out There's different stops on the
way There's no doubt That people had
no doubt in their minds In their hearts
That because of this act of nobility That
Uthman showed Allah granted him Hidayah at the
end Because Uthman was not someone who was
very interested in Islam Actually The Prophet once
asked him If he could enter The Kaaba
to pray Uthman ibn Talha was of high
status He was from Bani Abd al-Dar
Which is the tribe in Mecca That carry
the keys of the Kaaba They carry the
keys Till this day they carry the keys
They carry the keys of the Kaaba And
the Prophet said A few days every year
Even back then they would open the Kaaba
And they would clean it And he asked
for permission to go and pray inside He
said no never He said Uthman Let me
go in and pray I'm not asking for
anything I just want to go and worship
He said never He said Uthman Let me
go in Before this key is in my
hand And I won't give it to you
Let me go in before the day comes
Where that key in your hand becomes in
my hand And I don't give it to
you He said never If that happens I'd
rather be dead And the day came Where
that was Exactly what he said Happened And
he had the key in his hand And
Abbas is standing there boiling He's like just
give it to me Give us the key
Put the key in Bani Hashim Just put
the key in Bani Hashim Let it be
our thing now Not Bani Abd al-Dar
anymore Give it to us Where's Uthman So
Uthman came He said Uthman Remember I told
you He had nothing to say He said
what do you have to say Uthman What
do you have to say Uthman gave his
shahada There is no god but Allah And
you are his servant and his messenger The
Prophet peace be upon him threw the key
to him He said it's in your hand
And it's in the hands of your sons
It will be in your hands And the
hands of your lineage Or of your children
Only an oppressor will take it from you
And that's why till this day No one
has taken it away from them Out of
fear of the words of the Prophet peace
be upon him So every year when they
go and open the Kaaba There's always some
dude standing there Who doesn't really belong to
the Royal family or anything else He's just
the representative of Bani Abd al-Dar Who
still till this day carry the key of
the Kaaba And that's why It's out of
his nobility That that occurred Another story There
are different types of immigrations Some of them
immigrated It was very easy And I'm telling
you the stories of those That their migration
was not When they moved from Mecca to
Medina It was not an easy ordeal for
them It was very difficult Suhaib al-Rumi
They call him al-Rumi Suhaib ibn Sinan
But he is not Rumi at all It's
funny Suhaib is actually fully Arab But when
he was a kid And he came from
one of the tribes Bani Qilab That lived
in the northern part Of the Arabic Peninsula
And his mother and her friends They went
on a picnic And basically they were raided
And everyone, all the children Were basically stolen
from their mothers And sold as slaves And
amongst them was Suhaib Suhaib was full Arab
on both sides of his family But he
was taken from his mother When he was
4 or 5 years old And he was
sold to someone Living in the part of
the Roman Empire But he always knew That
he came from this land So when he
was able to break loose He broke loose
and he made his way back to his
land But unfortunately he was enslaved again And
he was brought to Mecca And he had
to buy himself out of slavery Again, he
had to do it twice in his life
And because he lived most of his life
In parts of Turkey Or Syria today They
didn't really speak Arabic there back then So
his first tongue Or his first language was
not Arabic So when he spoke Arabic His
Arabic was broken You could hear Like Salman
al-Farisi for example And Bilal al-Habashi
Their Arabic, you could tell He's not from
around here They don't speak perfect Arabic So
Suhaib was called Suhaib al-Rumi Because he
came from that part of the world And
he had an accent in the way he
spoke But he was not Rumi In terms
of his background So he brought himself out
of slavery in Mecca And he established a
business for himself And he became wealthy And
they allowed him And he got married within
Mecca And he had children So Suhaib is
a story of a person Who was extremely
hardworking He worked very hard to be where
he was in his life He was always
looked down upon Because he didn't speak the
language properly He was a previous slave And
he didn't belong in Mecca But he didn't
know where he belonged He knew that he
was from the region He was Arab He
had no idea exactly where he came from
Because he was taken so early in his
life from his parents So When Suhaib prepared
himself for his hijrah First he sent his
family Ahead of him So his family all
went before him And he stayed back to
prepare His business And he prepared 9 Camels
worth of merchandise Everything that he owned All
his possessions When he wanted to take it
with him And as agreed upon They have
to make sure that the safety of departure
So all that was taken care of He
had figured out the time Unfortunately it didn't
work out And they found out Someone found
out about it And before Suhaib could get
out of Mecca They came and they captured
him They said You come
to us With nothing You have no money
You have no possessions You have no value
As a person And now you are going
to leave Mecca With 9 camels Just packed
with merchandise No Or They thought they were
smart Or Or Or Or Either you stay
here You keep your money We don't want
your money from you You can keep your
business We have been working with you for
years You did a lot of work for
everybody So people liked him He was a
very good merchant If you leave We keep
all of your wealth They thought that was
a slam dunk It's easy It's not 9
So 9 camels That's 9 cars Packed with
merchandise That's like a full That's a lifetime
worth of work Talking in the millions Basically
all that he owns He is taking it
with him He spent Decades putting all this
together This is the The sum of All
of his effort And energy Of course he
is not going to Take it He didn't
even hesitate You want the caravans Keep the
caravans The one who provided all this Provide
for me again Take it They got upset
Because the response was not what they were
expecting They were expecting him to think Can
I take one Something You want the camels
Take the camels And the stuff on the
camels I don't care And they went after
him And they stripped him from his clothing
Take my clothing And he would walk from
Mecca To Medina in his shorts That's it
He walked from Mecca to Medina With absolutely
nothing Just something to cover his aura And
how ridiculous that looks Like you are walking
No shirt on You are a 45 year
old man Life has already been Extremely difficult
for you You lost your parents as a
child You were enslaved in another foreign country
You came back, they enslaved you again You
had to break yourself loose again Then you
worked hard And you built a family You
built a business for yourself You made a
name You built a name for yourself And
they Take it all away from you In
a moment But that's really not the piece
of the story That's worthy It's the fact
that he didn't even Hesitate In none of
the narrations of the story Does Suhaib al
Rumi even Indicate that he is thinking about
it Not one of the narrations Point out
that he was like You got me This
is hard I don't know about this one
None of them All the stories that we
have From Suhaib He's like what?
Take it Your clothing I don't need it
It's yours I don't care There are different
theories Of why he was like that Imam
Imam Subhanallah bin Hajar He points out There
are different reasons of why he did this
That are all valid And correct and true
But his version
That
the reason he was like this Is because
for him The love of Muhammad Was above
all Because to him It was What are
you putting on the scale for me?
My money Versus being with Rasulullah Don't make
me laugh My money My business Versus Rasulullah
It's a no brainer Of course Rasulullah Of
course I'm going to him Yes you're going
to walk naked But you think That's going
to change anything And that's what Ibn Hajar
thinks That this was the No he had
He was a Muslim for many years Suhaib
had been Muslim For a decade He was
one of the early people The people that
the nobles of Quraysh Looked down on And
refused to sit on the same table with
them Because they were all from backgrounds of
slavery And lack of nobility So they were
early Muslims He knew Muhammad Alayhi Salatu Wasalam
well And he loved the Prophet Alayhi Salatu
Wasalam And for him this was not an
issue that required Any degree of thought or
contemplation He didn't have to do any istikhara
or reflection He didn't have to send a
message saying Rasulullah I don't know The nine
years worth of work maybe I wait for
a bit He just left and he walked
to Medina He would arrive in Medina Before
he actually entered Because Suhaib would perform his
hijrah A little bit later Suhaib would perform
his hijrah Maybe after the Prophet Alayhi Salatu
Wasalam So he would arrive In Medina He
would find the Prophet Alayhi Salatu Wasalam Standing
waiting for him Alayhi Salatu Wasalam knew Suhaib
was coming So he would go everyday And
wait to see if Suhaib was going to
pop up from the horizon So Suhaib is
coming from the horizon And the Prophet Alayhi
Salatu Wasalam From afar is calling upon him
Saying Your transaction was successful Abu Yahya You
made a good trade Abu Yahya That was
a good trade that you made And he
came to him in tears To the Prophet
Alayhi Salatu Wasalam He said there is nothing
that was ever said to me In my
life that was more valuable than the words
he said Alayhi Salatu Wasalam to me that
day Another example of hijrah A little bit
different this one He is a little bit
different Abu Salam He had to escape She
had to wait Suhaib Lost everything And then
you have the example of Umar Umar did
this very differently Umar when he did He
was responsible for moving people From Mecca to
Medina He did this for a very long
time He kept on doing this until the
Prophet Alayhi Salatu Wasalam Said there is no
one left that I can send with you
Everyone that we can send we have sent
Everyone that there is capacity for them to
be stable there And have the ability to
leave their homes here We have done that
So it is your turn leave Go ahead
of me So Umar said alright He took
two friends with him One's name is Hisham
Two of his friends Umar the way he
would perform hijrah Is that he would wake
up in the morning And he would go
to Dar al-Nadwa And go right to
where the parliament beside the Kaaba is Wait
for them to have their morning meeting And
he would stand there And he would say
If anyone would like his mother to mourn
him For his wife to become a widow
Or for his kids to grow up as
orphans Meet me at the end of that
valley I am performing my hijrah today You
want to lose your life Please by all
means You will find me I will be
at this hour at the end of that
valley Leaving Makkah Anyone up for it?
No one went No one came his way
But one of his friends Ayyash wasn't able
to make it Ayyash wasn't able to make
it He was held back He kept on
telling him come with me He is like
my family my kids They didn't let me
take my wife My kids I am scared
If you stay then you are going to
lose your faith They are going to take
you away from Islam Come with me Allah
will open a door for your family Just
come with me today And he wouldn't do
it And he stayed back And he left
Islam So Sayyidina Umar Al-Khattab Would send
a letter back to him He would send
a letter back to his friend And the
letter would contain In the name of Allah
And he would And he would put within
it Verses from the Quran When this was
revealed later in Medina He would send it
back to him When this verse was revealed
To the Prophet Umar took a piece of
paper And he wrote it down From Umar
Al-Khattab to his friend Ayyash Allah says
Say All my servants who have went beyond
What is reasonable in terms of sin Do
not ever lose hope In the compassion and
the love of your Lord And he sent
it to Ayyash Telling him Come Don't leave
Islam Come with me Once he read Sayyidina
Umar's letter He fell into tears And he
followed Sayyidina Umar Al-Khattab I like this
story Because this is a part of the
story of Sayyidina Umar's hijrah That is not
often told Because we just know the part
where he goes And he challenged everyone He
cared for his friends He took care of
his friends Take care of your friends Keep
doors open Don't burn bridges And never forget
about them If Allah has Shown you the
way And shone on you his light And
filled your heart with love That didn't exist
before And you know now where you're walking
And where you're going And a friend of
yours Hasn't found that yet Never forget about
them Never give up on them And never
forget the importance Of reaching out to them
Because you never know At what moment their
hearts will open again And that's what true
friendship is And that's what Umar did He
never forgot his friend Ayyash We don't know
much about this gentleman I have no other
stories to tell you about him Aside from
the fact that Sayyidina Umar Al-Khattab Kept
behind him until he was able To bring
him to Medina And he became one of
the Muhajireen I'll end with that We'll continue
next week
