Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam, he used to wash
his feet
if he wasn't wearing leather socks or the
normal socks that are out there.
So what he's basically trying to say is
that the Messenger Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam,
okay, he wouldn't
go out his way to change the state
of his feet.
So if he was wearing leather socks, he
would wipe over it.
He wouldn't go out his way to take
the leather socks off,
okay,
and, and then start washing it. He wouldn't
do that at all. So if you find
that you're not wearing these leather socks, you
wash them.
Okay? And if you are, you wipe them.
And this was the hadi, the guidance of
the Prophet SAW Allahu Alaihi Wasallam. I'm going
to do now, Insha'Allah, my brothers and my
sisters, I'm going to speak a little bit
about
wiping over the leather socks.
Ibn Abd al Barham Allahu Ta'ala, he says,
al messraal al hufayn
Wiping over the leather socks
is
something that is only denied by
a Mahdul or a Muqtidya.
A Mahdul, my brothers and my sisters, is
somebody who has forsaken the right path.
And a Muqtidya, an innovator.
Somebody who has left
the jama'ah,
the congregation of the Muslims.
And the reason why Ibn Abdul Bar al
Maliki, who is from the Maliki Scholars, is
so harsh in his wordings is
because
there is so many Hadith that state that
the messenger sallallahu alaihi wa sallam wiped over
his socks,
wiped over his leather socks.
And then also it was something
that the innovators,
they denied
in the early generations.
So when we say, what
do we intend by it?
Wiping over the leather socks.
And we touched on it previously when we
spoke about wiping. What does wiping actually mean?
It means the past wet hands
over that which you have been told to
wipe, that thing that is specific,
and also
that which is wiped at a specific time
because you can't just wipe
every,
moment
of your life. There is conditions that come
with it. Right? So some of the conditions
that we're going to take
my brothers and my sisters.
The first one is
that you have to put on
the
leather socks
after you have done a taharatun
kamila,
a complete
purification.
Once you've done that,
only then can you put the
leather socks on.
Okay.
So let's just say for example now, you
made wudu, you washed your feet, only then
you can put it on.
Once you've completely done it, not when
you've only washed one of your feet, you
put the leather socks on.
Okay? And then after that, you wash the
next foot,
your left one. And then you put it
on. No. You have to completely
have,
completely your tahara.
And Mughir bin Shaba radiAllahu ta'ala Anhu he
said, Kuntum Manabi sallallahu alaihi wa sallam
I was with the prophet sallallahu alaihi wasallam.
Messenger Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam
was there making wudu, right? So Mughira says
that I rushed to take
his leather socks off.
Maghira wanted to give service to the prophet
sallallahu alaihi wa sallam by assisting him.
So the messenger sallallahu alaihi wasallam responded back
and he said,
that. Do not take them off. Indeed,
I entered my feet into these leather socks
while it was in a state of purity.
So it shows us that you have to
finish your pahara and only then,
okay,
you,
place the leather socks onto your feet.
A second condition my beloved brothers and sisters,
you have to make sure
that the leather socks
are covering
that which would normally be washed.
Because we know,
in this case, the leather socks are replacing
the replaced, which is
the feet.
And you would have to normally
wash your feet all the way up to
your ankles, your ankles included.
So when you're now going to replace
your washing
these feet, you have to bring
the leather socks. Right? And these leather socks,
they would have to cover
that which you would normally be washing.
So that goes to say that ankle socks
have to be left out of the equation
because the ankle socks, it doesn't
cover your ankles
as opposed to the leather socks that covers
your
ankles. It's a common question that people tend
to ask
and that is because
the replace now has a particular ruling and
there is an amount that you need to
cover.
And because this is now being replaced
by the leather socks,
their replacement
takes the same ruling as though in that
which needs to be covered.
So you have to make sure whatever you're
wearing on your feet,
it
covers your feet,
the part that normally would be washed
which includes your ankles
as well.
A common question that you guys are going
to ask is what about socks?
What about socks?
There is a number of narrations
that are attributed back to the companions,
but the Muhaqqiqeen
have stated that all of these narrations are
weak.
Wallakim my brothers and my sisters,
we have a statement of Abdullah ibn Umar
radiAllahu ta'ala Anhu.
And this statement of Abdullah ibn Umar, he
teaches us something called al Qiyas, which is
analogy.
He told us,
Al Masra'al Khufani
kal messi'alal
jaw rabbin.
Wiping over the leather socks
is like wiping over the socks as well.
And this is
This is
It is
when you have, my brothers and my sisters,
the Asl of something.
Okay?
And then you also have
a fara.
What is an asl?
Something that the Sharia has clearly stated.
And then you have something that is similar
to it.
Li'illatinjamiatinfilhookmi
baynaumaindaawhayl
alfami.
And because of a common feature between these
two things,
it ends up taking the same ruling.
And the common feature here, my brothers and
my sisters,
is
that the leather socks
and also the normal socks,
okay,
Make it quite difficult for a person to
take off
when making the wudu.
Having to take it off and then put
it back on again.
Okay. In whatever situation might be, it just
makes it easier for a person to wipe
over it.
And they both tend to do the same
job and that is to keep
the feet warm. So in this case, my
brothers and masters, as you guys can see,
there's a common feature between both of them.
There is another narration also that some scholars
derive from that you can wipe over the
socks as well.
The hadith
And a messenger salallahu alaihi wa sallam, he
commanded them
to
wipe over their turbans
and also their tesagheen.
When the scholars of,
Hadith, those who explained the hadith, they said,
that which warms
the feet
that which warms the feet. This is the
explanation of some of the scholars.
So you find that in both of these
cases,
the feet is warmed. Right? Whether it is
a normal sock or whether it is the
leather socks.
