As-salamu alaykum.
Bismillah.
Bismillah walhamdulillah.
As-salatu was-salamu ala rasulillah wa ala
alihi wa as'habihi ajma'in.
Welcome home.
We praise Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala in
abundant praise and we thank him.
We glorify him and we ask that he
send his peace and blessings upon our messenger
Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa sallam and on his
family and his companions and on those who
try to follow them including us until the
end of time.
Ameen.
Alhamdulillah, we are at the final session for
being anchored to Allah which is a series
where we covered or we are going to
finish covering one hadith, one moment in the
life of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.
And I want you guys again to think
about, I mentioned this last week but since
this is the conclusion, it really behooves us
to think about this that in a conversation
that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam had
with Ibn Abbas which is the whole story
of this narration and I'll read it again
for everybody inshallah in just a second.
In that moment that maybe took 3 minutes,
4 minutes in terms of actual communication, we
have spent 12, 13, 14 hours talking about
all of the wisdoms, not all of them
but some of the wisdoms that we can
derive from that and this shows again just
the depth of knowledge that's present and available
in the words of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi
wa sallam.
So this is the final part of the
narration of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam
in which he speaks and tells Ibn Abbas
the last bit, the last little artifact of
how to handle life because this entire series
is based upon life advices that will be
beneficial for everybody and anybody and so in
the beginning it talks a lot more about
active behavior, in the middle it talks more
about how to handle different things as they
hit you and then at the end it's
talking about being able to be pleased and
content with the decree of Allah subhanahu wa
ta'ala and so he finishes by saying
that we talked about the grief that a
person goes through leads to their relief or
is coupled with their relief and then he
finishes with a couple lines he says, وإن
النصر مع الصبر victory and aid comes with
patience وإن الفرج مع الكرب and relief comes
with the difficulty which is what we talked
about وإن مع العسر يسرا and with every
difficulty there is an abundance of ease so
this is the last chapter that we're going
to talk about which is the idea that
every hardship is coupled with ease Allah mentions
this in the Quran this idea of difficulty
being coupled with ease it's like when a
person expects something when we say coupled it
means that you expect that at the presence
of one of them you'll find the other
so just like you expect certain things if
somebody says hey do you want a peanut
butter and jelly sandwich and you say yeah
and then it's only peanut butter you're like
where's the jelly because you had that expectation
or a cheeseburger with no cheese you expect
it you can see I'm hungry you can
expect it right you have that expectation so
when it comes to life when you go
through difficulty it's not just a matter of
again like oh this is what you know
this is what I learned or what I
know no this is what is promised and
Allah mentions this not just once not just
twice but multiple times in the Quran if
it weren't important why mention it over and
over again mentioning it over and over again
gives us that understanding and that relief to
know that this is in fact something that
we can not only not only like know
casually but that we can pin and hinge
our entire life upon Allah Ta'ala says
in the Quran سَيَجَعَلَ اللَّهُ بَعْدَ عُسْرٍ يُسْرً
that Allah appoints and He makes that after
every difficulty a person goes through there will
be ease in Surat Al-Sharah which we're
going to talk about today we're going to
break it down he says very famously فَإِنَّ
مَعَ الْأُسْرِ يُسْرً Allah repeats Himself and there's
no such thing in the Quran as repetition
because of an accident you and I we
repeat ourselves we tell the same stories we
repeat ourselves on accident we say the same
thing because we forgot Allah doesn't forget and
Allah doesn't need to repeat Himself unless there
is a purpose to the repetition a lot
of times we think oh He's repeating Himself
for emphasis but the Prophet ﷺ teaches us
that His repetition is not only just for
emphasis sometimes there's actually a deep value in
the repeating of what He says جل وعلا
the Prophet ﷺ one time was sitting and
there was a hole that was dug in
front of him right in the desert there's
like a lot of different examples the Prophet
ﷺ would often times try to always relate
spiritual teachings to like the natural world around
him and even just daily life right so
one time he was sitting with his companions
he took his finger and he drew a
line in the sand and then he drew
a lot of lines that were coming off
of the sand or off of that line
so basically it looked like a straight line
and then a lot of branches and he
told his companions that this line that I
drew in the middle is the straight path
صراط المستقيم and every branch that I drew
off of it every offshoot that I drew
off of it is a path of Shaytan
and Shaytan is at the head of every
one of those trails and he's calling you
trying to get you off of the straight
path so the Prophet ﷺ had this really
beautiful way of teaching by using like the
things that were around him okay so this
is what's about to happen now he was
sitting one time and there was a hole
in the dirt in front of him just
like a hole that went in and if
you think about like what is what is
a hole when you look at it right
it's in some cases like a mystery you
don't know what that is who dug it
where it leads to is it just like
an empty hole is there something in there
there's a lot of mystery and confusion about
what that is so he says the Prophet
ﷺ he was sitting and he saw this
hole and he said that no matter what
the purpose of this hole is no matter
what how it was dug what animal dug
it if a human dug it all that
is irrelevant he said if hardship were to
go into this hole meaning that if this
hole was the source of hardship he said
the person should also know that ease will
also come with that as well meaning that
even in the smallest things in life who
thinks about a hole in the dirt who
thinks about something as insignificant as like landscaping
but he said no in every affair in
your life even if it's something as small
as a hole in the earth that's in
front of you if it comes with difficulty
it comes with ease and we mentioned this
last week but it bears repeating the Prophet
ﷺ was able to say this not only
because he's the Prophet he also had to
live this himself he also had to experience
the difficulty it's one thing to kind of
be like you know generally your life is
pretty easy and to tell people that are
struggling like hey you know what it'll be
okay like what do you know about it'll
be okay you've never had to worry like
I've had to worry right but the Prophet
Muhammad ﷺ in his life part of the
wisdom of why he was tested so much
was so that when we read these narrations
of him saying it will be okay you
look at his life and you're like wow
if anyone knows what it's like to wait
for something to be okay it's him so
he's telling all of his companions many of
them have seen the devastation they've seen him
lose his family lose his friends lose his
livelihood they've seen all of this and he
is remaining optimistic if he can be optimistic
then surely everybody else can trust in that
optimism of the Prophet ﷺ so when the
Prophet ﷺ when he explained this there's a
lot of scholars that also explained these verses
as well and they said that Allah ﷻ
in the Qur'an He promises that for
every one difficulty a person has they will
have two eases two moments of ease two
moments of felicity of grace and the Prophet
ﷺ even one time said this himself he
said one hardship in life will never overcome
two eases and this hadith is a little
bit vague but the scholars they explain it
they say that every person who experiences a
hardship experienced ease before it and ease after
it every person before things became difficult things
were easier, right?
so they appreciated and they enjoyed the easy
times and then the hardship happens but as
they're going through the hardship what does a
person look forward to?
they look forward to the next time that
things will become easy again so if you
were to do the math on your experience
you would find that every hardship is actually
always coupled with two moments of ease two
periods of felicity of grace so the Prophet
ﷺ is saying that this is the system
that Allah ﷻ designed life to be in
for us and that if you're optimistic and
if you're observant that you'll be able to
see these things the Prophet ﷺ he also
commented well let me give a little bit
of back story here you know we quoted
one surah last week we quoted surat al
-duha surat al-duha is the 93rd chapter
of the Quran so if you go to
Quran.com slash 93 you'll see this chapter
and the chapter is beautiful Allah ﷻ swears
by the duha which is the bright early
morning hours and he swears by the night
when it falls still and this is an
interesting rhetorical mechanism but Allah ﷻ let me
give you a little bit of what he's
trying to do here and what the tafsir
tells us Allah is painting a picture of
time when you think of time like when
you go through like time lapses what do
they show you when they want you to
see that the day has come and gone
they show you in a movie what the
sunrise and the sunset if they don't want
you to sit there and have to watch
the whole day they show you sunrise, sunset
sunrise, sunset and as the viewer of that
movie you're understanding like oh time is passing
right so Allah in these first two verses
is telling us what time passes right وَالدُّحَى
وَاللَّيْلِ إِذَا سَجَى by the light of the
morning sun and by the stillness of the
night and the scholars one of my favorite
tafsirs Ibn Ajiba he said that Allah Ta
'ala uses this metaphor or this illustration to
describe to us the emotional state of what
time feels like when things are not going
your way you don't even have the frame
of mind to enjoy it you can't enjoy
the day you know what do they say
when someone gets their heart broken like you
know they have these jokes about people who
get heartbroken they get dumped may Allah Ta
'ala protect us right I mean I'm good
but may Allah Ta'ala protect everybody else
right Alhamdulillah I'm past that stage right she
said yes a long time ago so Alhamdulillah
may Allah Ta'ala protect all of us
Amin Ya Rabb okay what do they say
they're like oh this person like oh like
the sun doesn't shine as bright food doesn't
taste the same like do you want to
go hang out they're like no I just
want to sleep all day right sorry if
I'm describing some people are like tearing up
like did he see me today no right
so when a person is in a state
of difficulty and grief time is extreme it
already is fluid but it's an extremely fluid
experience right a person can't understand you know
what is up what is down they're heartbroken
and the Prophet ﷺ experienced heartbreak so Allah
after that verse says ma wada'aka rabbuka
wa ma qala and this is like so
important that no matter how fast the days
seem to keep going and how they seem
to keep passing you by right the days
and the nights and the days and the
nights and you wonder as you're watching the
sun rise and the sun set and the
Prophet ﷺ by the way this surah came
after a period where he was not given
revelation for a long time it's called he
got revelation once then he came with revelation
to his people they challenged him he said
okay next revelation comes I'll come to you
and revelation paused so he used to sit
and wait for revelation because that was his
answer to the people that were challenging him
he can't make up stuff no he's a
Prophet of God so imagine he's sitting and
waiting waiting waiting waiting the days are passing
passing passing he feels very what depleted defeated
left is there ever going to be relief
and even though our circumstances are different we've
all arrived at that same conclusion will I
ever find a job?
will I ever get married?
will I ever be happy?
will I ever have a good relationship with
my family?
will I ever you fill in the blank
right will I ever and that's what Allah
is describing then Allah says almost as if
to answer not your first question but your
last question ما ودعك ربوك و ما قلع
because the first question is like the low
hanging stuff will I ever be happy?
will I ever this?
will I ever get married?
will I ever find a job?
that's like the more obvious one the last
question in that same line of questioning is
why has Allah abandoned me?
like why did Allah leave me?
like I've been begging him and he hasn't
answered so Allah doesn't answer the first question
which is oh messenger of God you will
be given revelation oh messenger of God you
will be victorious no he answers the end
of questioning which is don't worry no matter
what God has not abandoned you nor is
he displeased with you because as you sit
and watch time pass and life is not
going the way that you imagined Shaitaan starts
to implant that thought into your heart why
has Allah abandoned me?
what have I done to upset him?
what did I do wrong?
وَلَا الْآخِرَةُ خَيْرٌ لَكَ مِنَ الْأُولَىٰ and then
Allah continues the next life is certainly better
than this one what is to come is
better than what is happening now and the
scholars say that this is you know you
can read this in two ways this verse
can be read as what is to come
in this life is better than what you've
already you know gone through but the other
reading of this and they're both correct based
on the language is the afterlife is much
better than this dunya and so becoming disappointed
in the dunya and in the result of
that losing your relationship with Allah because that's
the real danger everybody gets heartbroken everybody gets
sad and everybody experiences disappointment but how many
of us are able to transcend the disappointment
of the dunya and not let it affect
our relationship with Allah that's the real one
don't let it develop resentment towards Allah don't
let it affect whether or not you trust
him right?
so he says the akhira when you go
there you're not even going to remember this
place everything you worried about it's the dot
of it's the place of grief and anxiety
but as soon as you step into jannah
as soon as you enter heaven you won't
even remember you won't even recall the narration
says and the Quran even says this people
will be asked in the afterlife they'll be
asked how long did you spend there?
how long?
and you know what we're going to say?
one day or maybe a part of a
day one day or maybe a part of
a day by comparing to me that's have
you guys ever been in math class before?
like or in one of my lectures you're
like when is this going to end?
you sit here and you're like this is
non-stop you know you're connecting you take
a flight if you're used to 2 hour
flights you hop on a 3 hour flight
you're like ya rabbi when are we ever
going to land?
and subhanallah like time feels so difficult in
the afterlife all of that waiting all of
that you know difficulty in dealing with time
as it passes you're going to say verbally
you're going to utter we only spent one
day there and by the way this is
for those who had it good and those
who had it pretty tough everyone's going to
say the same thing the dreams you chased
and the dreams you sacrificed for you know
the work that you the work that you
invested in and gave up time with your
family and friends and your kids because you
wanted to be successful in the dunya we
weigh it was only for a day you
gave up everything for one day the sins
that we indulge in because we think it's
going to bring us happiness because we think
that it's what we need it was only
for a day and imagine being in jahannam
may Allah protect us and we were told
you gave up this for one day you
gave up all of akhira for one day
or even a part of a day so
Allah here reminds the Prophet yeah life is
tough and this is by the way at
the beginning of his message surah ad-duha
he's being given this in the beginning stages
of his message okay and Allah is telling
him you're going to go through some tough
times but if you can keep your eyes
on the prize patience will come with its
grace if you can be patient you will
have grace you will experience the reward and
the pleasure and at that time you will
be given so much bounty and favor by
your lord that you will be absolutely content
and what the scholars say here if you
read the tafsir why did Allah say that
you will be content when he talked about
the akhira because in Arabic they say you
can understand something the opposite of something kind
of like reading between the lines what's the
opposite of this is what if you're going
to be truly content in the akhira what
does that mean about this life you'll never
be what you'll never be truly content you'll
never be truly content it's kind of gross
but bear with me for a second I
feel like we've grown close together talked about
brain masala last week right the scholars they
say something so it's so real you know
if you guys have ever had someone in
your family who just keeps it real I
want you to imagine them saying this the
scholars say the analogy of this dunya and
its pleasures are like eating a meal you
plan for it you enjoy it, it tastes
good you digest it and then before you
know it it's time to go to the
bathroom and they say that's pretty much what
it is that's pretty much what it is
like you spend all this time and I
want you to think about like when people
wait for example for like going out to
a nice fancy restaurant or like ooh we
made plans Friday for sushi and so all
week long you're like looking forward to that
you go, you enjoy it and then in
a few hours your body does its body
thing digests it, pushes it through and you're
like all of that waiting all that anticipation
for what for what, I mean literally it's
a four letter word right, for nothing right,
this dunya ain't anyway so so the scholars
use that I can't, the scholars use that
example to illustrate to you and I that
look at the metaphor and the dunya that
you're investing into after all that when you're
dead and put in your grave you're going
to be like that was it that was
it may Allah protect us when you enter
Jannah you're really going to understand what true
contentment is because true contentment doesn't stop in
this life the meal ends in this life
the wedding that you've been planning for and
excited for and hoping for and praying for
that wedding ends, you know I went to
a wedding recently I have to say man,
I have to say there's going to be,
I think the next heart work series is
going to be SOS Muslim weddings we got
to figure this stuff out, okay but you
know and it's beautiful everyone's celebrating I want
to tell you, like the phrase you know,
it was a movie I think everyone's chasing
that for their weddings, right, there's too much
Bollywood influence in the ummah today, right and
the best is when they ask the imam
to be part of it, they're like can
you please announce the unveiling of the bride
I'm like that's too personal, like I need
to leave like you got, I finish my
nikah, I'm always like alright you can all
do your you know stuff now, alright and
enjoy, you know your mirrors and your dollar
bills around the head and stealing shoes and
everything you can do all of that now,
I will depart now Alhamdulillah, right and then
the wedding that you planned for, that you
prayed for it's over, right the purchase that
you have the brand new shoes right the
Air Force Ones, the clean white Air Force
Ones the Jordans, the Dunks, they get their
first scuff, khalas they're done, you just don't
even feel the same way about them anymore,
you get a scratch on your car, you
just don't feel like it's time to start
shopping that's the nature of this dunya, you're
never going to be truly content here it's
not a thing it's not a thing and
if we keep looking for true contentment here,
all we're going to find is disappointment over
and over and over again because we're like
no, no, no, I promise you this is
the one that's going to make me content
this thing, this purchase as soon as I
click confirm, check out, buy as soon as
I sign on the da da I promise
you, this is what's going to make me
content but I'm telling you, many of you
guys are younger than me, I'm 36 I'm
telling you, as someone who believed that for
a long time and we all struggle with
it, I still do till today, to some
degree I'm telling you that it doesn't end
because as soon as you get something you
see something else that's a little bit better
see something else that you like a little
bit more right, you see and think about
it, subhanallah, have any of you ever stayed
in an Airbnb that's nicer than your house
what do you do when you come back,
you're like that Airbnb was so nice, I
caught somebody one time in an Airbnb, looking
at all the labels of all the pottery
and all the decorations taking pictures of the
barcodes I'm like, they're like, if I can't
take the home with me, I'm at least
going to redecorate that's an example again of
that discontentment, right but subhanallah the moment that
you look at everything you have with the
lens of patience and you see how much
more you have than so many more people
you don't feel the need to increase anything
that you have any longer Allah's promising him
this and that's why Allah, what does he
do when he tries to tell him how
to be content in this life he reminds
him if you want to be content look
backwards, don't look forwards the more you look
forwards the less content you'll be look backwards
was it not the case that Allah found
you as an orphan right, do you remember
those days, it's like Allah is asking the
Prophet, do you remember those days when you
were alone had nobody and Allah gave you
shelter look back, don't look forwards if you
want rida with Allah look backwards and he
found you in a state where you were
wandering you were there and you knew in
your heart of heart what was right and
you knew, the Prophet was always given a
baseline of course of guidance but before his
messengership he would go and he would what
he would think and do tahannoth and meditate
what's the purpose of this what's the purpose
of this life he was wandering, he was
thinking and Allah gave you this guidance and
Allah found you in a deep state of
need and he enriched you and gave you
a sense of sufficiency of provision Allah asks
three questions and in those answers the Prophet
of course he was never discontent with Allah
but we all need this reminder he says,
was it not the case that you had
those three scenarios where you were an orphan
that was lost you were wandering and confused
about what the path forward was and then
even after you were sheltered and you had
guidance, you were completely destitute, you had no
funding, no money, no support and Allah gave
you the riches to support you and your
mission فَأَمَّا الْيَتِيمَةَ فَلَا تَقْهَرْ so as a
result of thinking about your own journey and
the patience that you had to display and
endure with when Allah gives you when Allah
provides for you what's the right response number
one is you can never ever forget about
the people that are enduring patiently as well
Allah reminds him أَلَّمْ يَجِدَكَ يَتِيمًا فَآوَدْ do
you remember when you were an orphan and
then Allah says فَأَمَّا الْيَتِيمَةَ فَلَا تَقْهَرْ and
if you find an orphan never let them
be oppressed وَأَمَّا السَّائِلَ فَلَا تَنْهَرْ and if
you ever come across somebody that's asking because
what وَوَجَدَكَ عَائِلًا فَأَغْنَى you were in a
state of need so if somebody comes they're
asking and they're in a state of need
فَلَا تَنْهَرْ never repel them وَأَمَّا بِنِعْمَةِ رَبِّكَ
فَحَدِّثْ and when you think about the blessings
of your lord then proclaim it this is
actually a very interesting one do you know
why it's important for us to talk about
how Allah has blessed us do you know
why to keep your ego in check good
but when you're with other people yes aren't
you all afraid of حَسَد نَزَر how's your
day going you're like horrible right you don't
want to share Allah is saying if you
have something good that happened to you talk
about it with again not everybody right don't
post it maybe to your story but فَحَدِّثْ
why go ahead because if you can't recognize
something like you yourself by sharing by talking
about it with those that you love and
that love you it will be a reminder
intrinsically to everybody that we're so blessed if
I went around the room today and I
asked everybody what'd you have for lunch today
and we talked about it you know some
people like oh I had what'd you have
for lunch today what'd you have for lunch
today what'd you eat for lunch today sorry
you didn't have lunch yeah oh what'd you
have for brunch okay love ourselves a little
brunch on a Monday okay you had what
work gave you some brunch what was on
the menu sandwiches that's pretty good who here
likes sandwiches raise your hand very good okay
excellent what'd you have chicken and some I
like how you said potato wedges not fries
you're a distinct man right you're a scholar
you're a man of nuance I like that
okay you could have said hey you got
fries potato wedges there's a difference those who
know know right IYKYK right he had some
chicken some potato wedges sounds good huh who
else who had some nice lunch today anybody
who had a good lunch nobody your mom
cooked subhanallah who misses mom's cooking raise your
hand yeah subhanallah right anyone else what'd you
have tacos not even Tuesday taco Monday you
see what's happening when you talk even the
smallest blessings but are they small really when
you talk about these things and people you
know everyone here inshallah has something to eat
today if you're fasting may Allah bless you
but if you're not you had something to
eat today and you're thinking to yourself like
Danish had the chicken and potato wedges sounds
pretty good but he heard tacos he's like
you know I love a taco right and
she heard the brother who had sandwiches and
she's like the sandwiches sound delicious right and
we all heard mom's cooking and we're like
yeah right when you talk about the blessings
of Allah it reminds you how grateful you
should be how lucky you are and I
don't need to bring up the pictures and
I mean it's self-evident what we're seeing
right now our brothers and sisters it's self
-evident every morsel every grain you know there
was an auntie subhanallah I'll never forget I'll
never forget her man she subhanallah she hired
me I was you know what I used
to do I had a crazy work my
resume is insane I used to fold towels
at bed bath and beyond when I was
in high school alhamdulillah I know more about
towels and sheets than anybody in here thread
counts textures polyester blends I can hook you
up we're good okay bed bath and beyond
I worked at the apple store for a
while I worked what else did I do
oh I did sales for like a plastics
company interesting and then when I was trying
to get married I worked for an auntie
she's an orthodontist and I used to do
the preparation of the molds that they would
take to send to the companies to get
the braces or the approval for braces so
what they do is they make you bite
into a mold and then it comes out
kind of jaggedy I used to go on
that rotary thing and smooth it out and
then I used to work at the front
desk right I was like the secretary hi
how are you right I was pretty good
so she used to she was muslim so
she used to bring lunch for us it
was like a few of us muslims who
worked there and I noticed you know she's
very mashaAllah successful but she would always bring
food and we would eat kind of like
you know in a more humble modest way
so we all had like a small plate
and you would take from the main plate
and then you would eat so she made
some like keema and rice some like ground
beef and rice and stuff like that we
would be eating and of course like everyone's
eating and you finish your plate right just
like mama taught us but I would notice
her she would literally every grain of rice
every grain she would pick and she would
eat it off her plate not in a
grotesque way in a very classy way but
she would very gently so then one time
I asked her I said I said auntie
I you know it's not coming out of
hunger obviously she's not like oh I'm so
hungry I said I noticed that mashaAllah you
really clean your plate your mom must have
taught you well she goes I don't know
where Allah put the blessings and I'm not
trying to I'm not trying to lose that
she goes you have to eat every bite
because you don't know where Allah put the
blessing in the food maybe he put it
in that one grain your barakah for that
day is in that one grain and you
passed it up right so remember and she
grew up this auntie very successful now grew
up in India very very difficult life so
where do you think those lessons kind of
grew from they grew from a state of
reflection about what life used to be and
what it is now but the most impressive
people that you'll ever meet are people that
have not forgotten where they've come from but
the ones who forget where they've come from
are the ones who become the most putrid
and evil of people may Allah protect us
and so Allah Ta'ala is reminding okay
okay now this surah like I said it
is right before the surah that deals with
isn't that amazing Allah just told the whole
story of the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam in
like eight verses he told the whole story
basically summary of it in the next one
now that the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam has
recounted his difficulty Allah is teaching him about
the the value of his patience he begins
by saying it's hard to translate but let
me do my best so the literal translation
is have we not opened up your chest
for you and this is kind of an
interesting translation this is how google would translate
it but when you look in the tafsir
of how it's supposed to be translated is
is the feeling of relief that a person
has when things get better opening up of
the chest makes sense too when you're nervous
where do you feel most constricted here right
when you're nervous my son had his last
football game his soccer game oh god I'm
turning European he had his last soccer game
on Sunday it was his final game did
I tell you guys about the previous team
he was on the Zionists no oh that
was Tuesday night we played on a team
we submitted him to a city league and
it was individual and they threw him on
a team my luck right the team they
added him on no joke all of the
kids went to this private school of a
certain faith and when you look up the
website of the school and their goals and
their mission and their values number one value
is Zionism so my son is playing with
all these kids okay and his name is
Moosa of all the prophets that we could
have Moses lead Bani Israel you know so
it was a very interesting season okay and
I did my best to try to obviously
and you know Moosa did his best and
he was good he's one of the good
players and he was you know he's kind
of you know making a name for the
Muslims Alhamdulillah but then you know we looked
at my wife and I were like you
know this is actually it was happening all
SubhanAllah throughout the fall and so every weekend
was like this horrible pain of like I
can't even be around because I looked up
the social media of the other parents and
it was like I mean just how they
felt I was wearing my watermelon hoodie of
course and I just I told my wife
I said you know what this team they
were good they were like crushing teams without
American military support they were crushing team and
and so like Moosa was loving it because
they're like we didn't tell him by the
way because it was going to be heartbreaking
if he knew that these kids because then
he's going to ask them why do you
support I was just waiting for him to
be like yeah McDonald's is bad I was
waiting for him to like start that conversation
anyways we decided let's build a Muslim team
right let's build a Muslim team so we
put together some Muslim kids and we go
out there and we get rocked we lose
0-5 0-4 it's like it's bad
right we didn't have enough Arabs on the
team honestly so soccer you know you guys
just admit it if it was cricket no
Arabs please right if it's soccer we need
some Arabs so long story short this is
the last game of the season and they've
been improving like you see them practicing outside
they've been growing getting better and it's the
last game and it's 8am and I'm like
making some breakfast for him and I'm like
here eat this just have something small and
he goes I can't and I go why
he goes I feel like I'm going to
throw up he's so nervous he goes my
chest is beating so fast right and I'm
telling him it's okay it's okay just say
bismillah bismillah don't worry Allah is with you
you're going to do fine you've been practicing
for this etc etc but he felt all
that constriction in his chest right and then
he scored 4 goals they won 8 to
1 they stomped him at some point I
was like pull the starters right please he's
scoring goals from midfield I was like stop
it doing that Ronaldo thing anyways Allah bless
him so the point being is that the
chest is the nexus of anxiety you know
we think that it's up here because that's
where we're processing but the feeling is here
Allah says did we not expand and open
up your chest to relief for you like
the constriction is gone and didn't we relieve
you of the burden that you've been carrying
for so long you see Allah the one
that you've been carrying on your back even
though literally the prophet wasn't carrying it on
his back but think about how burdens feel
think about how stress feels you know when
someone is stressed you can see it in
their face you can see it in their
language you can see it in their posture
when somebody is stressed they don't sit confident
they sit hunched over thinking occupied right Allah
is describing the prophet in his time of
difficulty you were constricted you were weighed down
and you were burdened but you were patient
and because you were patient he says we
elevated your name your remembrance you know what
the scholars say the scholars say this ayah
is referring to the most beautiful association ever
you know we think of like associations we
think of people we think of husbands and
wives we think of families with names right
we're like oh the kennedys oh this and
that association if you tell someone like oh
I know a celebrity or who's the most
famous person you have in your contacts list
oh I know this person everyone goes crazy
right people are dying to like even touch
a celebrity I had a friend subhanallah who
was at the Mavs game and I guess
the Mavs Luca fell down or something and
hit his face and he came up and
his face was bleeding and my friend he
loves Luca he said you're still beautiful man
and he said Luca said my face hurts
right that's love like we like when we
love somebody we the association and now he's
like telling us like dude he talked to
me we're like no you're a doctor and
he was complaining to you his face hurts
he's like he talked to me he really
did you know Allah is telling the prophet
that you were alone you were unknown you
were carrying this burden and when you feel
stressed out and when you feel patient when
you feel like you have to be patient
and you're working through it you do feel
alone but because of your patience what happened
to your name Muhammad what does every Muslim
say when they accept Islam when they remind
themselves of their faith faith what better association
than to have your name permanently associated with
Allah permanently the name Muhammad will never be
removed from the name of Allah God's name
will always be coupled right after his name
the remembrance of his beloved his prophet his
Habib his Mustafa our messenger you can't understand
the reward of being patient and just like
the prophet got that proximity our name may
not be joined in the kareemah of course
but you still got proximity with Allah your
name is mentioned in the gatherings the angels
are talking about you like you're the celebrity
when you bear patiently the angels brag about
being close to you about being near you
about knowing you because of your patience then
Allah says this one he says verily with
every difficulty there is ease indeed with every
difficulty there is ease and then he finishes
how do you handle those moments so keep
striving keep working hard and when you have
completed what you're supposed to be doing when
you have reached the end of that moment
of that destination of patience keep working hard
keep connected don't forget about it when you're
patient and Allah rewards you for your patience
that's the first time think about this let
me give you an example what is he
saying here you pray pray pray pray pray
Allah gives you what you've been praying for
what do you stop doing praying you make
dua over and over and over again for
the exam you take the exam exam is
over what stops dua when you become free
when you become relieved and you have completed
your duty keep going why because that shows
that this was not a transaction with Allah
but this was who you really are you're
not patient because you wanted to get some
commodity or something transactional no you're patient because
you wanted to be close to Allah and
patient people realize faithful people realize that patience
is the quickest pathway to being close to
Allah Ta'ala and when it comes to
being patient you push yourself by hoping in
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala alone these two
surahs are back to back in the Quran
93 and 94 both of them are summarizing
the life of the Prophet in like the
shortest way they're describing a person who endured
difficulty who bore patiently and as a result
of that achieved a status with Allah that
was unlike any other human being may Allah
Ta'ala give us this okay we'll finish
with one last line and then we'll do
some Q&A inshallah okay what happens when
a person deals with life patiently what happens
first of all we all hate being reminded
to be patient right and this subhanallah if
you look at how the Quran is addressing
this the Quran is telling you be patient
and part of our struggle is that we
have to actually just take that advice as
it is you know my son one of
the things that's interesting about children is that
you can't you can't just tell them to
do something especially if they're very inquisitive you
have to explain why you have to explain
why hey you can't do that well why
and only if the why makes sense you
get their buy in but if the why
is not there I mean we've all been
children before if the person didn't tell you
why you're like forget you I'm going to
do what I want I know best I
know better right so in this surah Allah
doesn't exactly give the why and with Allah
oftentimes there won't be a why but it
comes from knowing that whatever Allah has told
me to do is ultimately what's best for
me even if I don't know how it
works exactly right be patient so if somebody
says to you like I'm so frustrated I'm
so exhausted I'm so you know I'm just
irritated why is this not happening and someone
says try to be patient you're like stop
telling me that what you're actually saying is
if I can't understand why I have to
be patient I don't want to do it
but that shows a lack of trust in
the entire plan that Allah Ta'ala has
for you and we talked about this last
week Allah Ta'ala laughs out of joy
when he sees the end of a person's
struggle is coming and that person is becoming
very irritable because he knows the person is
going to experience relief very soon so here
are some things that the author says come
only from being patient are you ready number
one he says when you're patient all of
the sins that you have start getting erased
if something bad happens to you and you
bear patiently it's like a dry erase board
every single sin I want you to think
about all the sins you had for a
given day and then on the way home
from work you get a flat tire at
that point you can be like whatever right
you can say certain things or you can
say okay everyone okay everyone's safe let's pull
over let's call triple A let's go to
the discount tire let's go here whatever and
you handle it with patience to the point
where when you get home eventually the people
that are at your house or the people
maybe you're going out to dinner with some
friends or you're going to you come here
to Ruth's you get here and no one
can tell that you had a flat tire
people where's your car you're like oh I
had a flat tire you're acting totally normal
that's patience right but the impatient one is
the one is like I can't wait to
tell everybody what a bad day I've had
can I tell you nobody wants to hear
it you know because everybody's had a similar
bad day everyone's had a similar experience right
you have very when I say nobody I
mean the general body of course you have
a few loved ones that always want to
hear about your pain how do you always
right come here cry right here right but
for the rest of humanity when you see
someone and they say hey how's it going
right you know that's not the time to
like unload right they're asking you know I'm
and they're asking generally how's it going they're
not asking about your passenger side front tire
okay so he says if you're patient only
if you're patient this does not go to
the impatient people if you're patient then sins
are written off completely like they're just erased
all together and you are rewarded for being
patient by losing your sin number two is
that the hardness of your heart when a
person is tested and they have to bear
patiently their heart starts to become soft this
isn't talking about physical this time about the
actual spiritual heart a hard heart has a
few afflictions of them ingratitude person is not
grateful of them a lack of sympathy a
person is apathetic they can't feel for others
of them the person always has dry eyes
like emotionally now some people don't cry easily
but their heart is dry meaning that nothing
affects them they can see the most emotionally
traumatizing damaging story does not affect them you
know I'm still hungry I'm still this I'm
still that didn't you just see what happened
didn't you hear so and so's mom is
sick so and so's dad is so and
so's child is in the hospital oh let's
go eat unaffected that's a hard heart patience
when you endure and you really put yourself
against it Allah the gift that he gives
you is that he starts to make you
what grateful starts to make you more empathetic
you start to feel softer you start to
be able to connect with people better instead
of judging you start to make excuses abdullah
he said that hypocrites look for criticism believers
look for excuses meaning if I see somebody
the hypocrite is the one that's always leaning
to try to figure out man why would
they do that the believer is saying I
know why they do that because of this
reason give them the excuse may Allah make
us like this so he says that patience
softens the heart third is he says that
if a person is patient in this life
and they deal with their trials patiently in
this life on the day of judgment they
will be elevated and when they stand before
Allah they will be announced and proclaimed that
this is the one who endured patiently this
is the one it's like being the valedictorian
at your graduation it's like being the one
you get the honorific you get the announcement
you get the salute of everybody on the
day of judgment because the ones who are
patient are the ones that are drawn near
to Allah subhanahu wata'ala number six is
he says that when a person is patient
they start to develop contentment sorry sorry about
that when a person is patient they start
to develop true contentment and he says this
is the goal that every person should have
I want to finish with this one question
and this one thought let's go back to
the beginning of the story the prophet is
sitting on an animal he's riding and there's
a young man behind him and he tells
this young man about remembering Allah being with
Allah realizing that nobody can hurt you and
nobody can help you Allah is the one
who's with you and to bear with things
with grace and with empathy and with understanding
and patience okay this is the life advice
the prophet gave this is the hadith that
the prophet he tells this young man listen
to me clearly I have to give you
some advice and Ibn Abbas he takes this
advice and he internalizes it and he deeply
thinks about it I want us all to
think for a moment about just today's lesson
but even if you can't remember before try
to remember and think for a moment about
how you and I in the past day
have failed with this alone think about the
impatience that we've shown with people with our
friends our loved ones our community you know
think about the impatience you've shown on the
highway with these horrible Dallas drivers probably going
to Denton think about I need to be
more patient with Denton really right think about
the failure that we have think about it
this stuff transcends when you order at a
restaurant or at a coffee shop or you
purchase something and there's a person that's going
I don't know like 10 seconds slower than
normal and the irritation that is felt internally
think about the question that you sent to
somebody on iMessage and then within a minute
you tapped on it and you tapped the
question emoji or the question tap back think
about these demonstrations and think about how all
of these are proofs that you and I
are not truly content people they're all proof
like if we want to be content we
need to be able to be like Sayyidina
Yaqub we need to be able to find
out that our son was taken and be
able to somehow be able to say you
know what I trust in Allah and he
cried crying does not mean you're not patient
he shed tears he moaned he lamented he
grieved about losing his son but he was
patient he cried to Allah you know think
about how when something doesn't go our way
when we complain outside of what is normal
right there's a functional complaint oh you lost
your baggage you know they lost your baggage
at the airport or something okay I have
to go file out a form or whatever
it's a complaint but think about even when
you're allowed to complain how you complain and
to who you complain to is the person
that you're complaining to even able to change
your situation or are you just at that
moment petitioning Allah's decree for you in your
life but you're too scared to actually talk
to Allah about it like many of us
we're actually upset with how Allah has ordained
our life but instead of opening our hands
and complaining to Allah we'd rather just sit
and talk to everybody about how we don't
like it and that ultimately is a proof
of a lack of contentment with Allah subhanahu
wa ta'ala so if anything the Prophet
peace be upon him is giving Ibn Abbas
the path to contentment with Allah subhanahu wa
ta'ala and if there's nothing that a
person gains from these 14 hours that we've
gone over this hadith the only thing that
we can hope to take away is that
maybe Allah will give us that gift that
we'll be content with him may Allah make
us content with him may Allah make us
never discontent with him, may Allah make us
always in every scenario able to see the
silver lining, may Allah allow us to always
see the beautiful truth in the trial that
we're experiencing, may Allah always give us the
ability to bear patiently and to not complain
against him but to complain to him because
he's the one who is in charge of
our affairs may Allah ta'ala give us
the ability to handle difficulty with grace and
with beauty and with compassion, may Allah ta
'ala give us the ability to reflect the
character of our Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam
in that when we are tested we are
brought nearer to him, when we are tried
we are brought closer to him when we
are disappointed we come back to Allah we
don't run away from him, ya Allah bring
us close to you, gently in a way
that allows us to appreciate and to grow
nearer to you ya Allah, oh Allah we
ask you to let us take all the
lessons that we've gained from this narration ya
Allah and from all of the stories and
all of the references, all of the ayat
and all of the hadith and every reflection
that was shared, we ask you oh Allah
to allow this to become the way that
we behave, the way that we act the
way that we are, and that these classes
become a proof for us and not against
us, Ameen, Ameen, ya Rabbil Alameen Subhanak, Allahumma
bihamdik, nashadu an la ilaha illa ant, nastaghfiruka
wa natubu ilayk, we're gonna have inshallah a
little bit of a Q&A, so if
you wanna go to slido.com, you can
hop on and when you go into the
the room you can type heartwork and inshallah
you can put your questions on there, and
then I'll have them on here and then
we'll do some Q&A the questions can
be about anything, if you need to head
out inshallah, by all means you can, just
do so quietly if you can inshallah, so
that we can do the Q&A bi
-idhnillah yeah,
sorry the code here let me reload it
sorry, one second slido, S-L-I-D
-O S-L-I-D-O okay here
let me do one thing real quick, sorry
okay okay, so for the event code enter
heartwork heartwork, H-E-A-R-T W
-O-R-K, yeah huh?
all lowercase, yes slido.com and then enter
heartwork inshallah, and you can start putting the
questions there, okay, they're coming in now alright,
so if you're gonna head out inshallah, we
just wanna ask you to keep the noise
level to a minimum inshallah so we can
get through some of these questions number one,
this is very interesting this is a very
interesting question is composite bonding for teeth halal?
I don't know, right see, that's a great
answer I actually don't know, Allah knows best
I would ask a dentist and a scholar
if you could find both, that'd be great
okay, this is actually a very good question
do you get partial credit if you try
to be patient but you struggle, but you're
trying your best, absolutely absolutely, look patience looks
different for everybody when we look at the
stories of these people we are describing ideal
levels of patience we're describing truly like amazing
levels of patience, the reality is that every
single person in this room your display of
patience will be different than somebody else, and
your job is to just be patient within
your own realm, you can't look at your
friend or another person someone else might be
a very very just naturally quiet person right,
someone else might be a little bit more
extroverted, a little bit more outspoken patience is
not determined by the personality type, it's determined
by the feeling you have in your heart
towards Allah how do you feel in that
moment a quiet person can be very resentful
and a loud person can be very very
patient, right so those manifestations are not necessarily
always reflections of the heart however, it is
important to try to line up your heart
with how you behave and remind yourself in
those moments as you're being patient, but yes,
absolutely if you try to be patient but
you struggle Allah rewards that, without a doubt
the effort is what Allah subhanahu wa ta
'ala is looking for is it transactional if
you ask Allah to make something better for
you, no not necessarily, but Allah subhanahu wa
ta'ala is the one who knows what's
best so it's kind of like going to
I mean, I hate to use this analogy
because it's not befitting of Allah subhanahu wa
ta'ala but it'd be like going to
any professional or master of something and saying,
hey, I know that this is how you
do it, but can you do it differently
like would you ever step into the cockpit
of a plane and tell the pilot, like
hey, I know you take off like this
but try this for me you wouldn't do
that, right because you trust that person, so
the fact that you trust them means that
you don't want to have any input into
how they do it, when you step on
that plane you want to have no input,
in fact if you saw somebody else trying
to like, you're like hey get out of
there, let the person do their thing, with
Allah let Allah do his thing just ask
him, oh Allah give me what's best, and
if you trusted him what's best, imagine losing,
by the way, you know who did this
Bani Israel they did this in Surah Al
-Baqarah they asked Allah to give them a
certain type of food when Allah had already
given them the best kind of food, and
then Allah asked the question, are you trading
that which is worse for that which is
better, meaning are you exchanging, like you want
me to take away what I've given you
which is better and give you that which
is worse but again, they were of the
opinion that well, we know best so this
entire exercise is really about understanding that you
don't actually know best, Allah does, and if
you look back at your life, you'll see
many instances where you thought you knew best
you really thought, and then you realized, you
know what, I actually didn't and so now
it's time for me to hand it over
to Allah, how to have Khushu in Salah
that's a long one I'll give you a
couple tips, number one slow down if you
force yourself to slow down in your prayer
you will naturally have a better experience in
prayer number two, don't pray in a preoccupied
state or in a rushed state if you
pray in a state of preoccupation or being
rushed, you're not going to enjoy it number
three before you pray, my teacher told me
this, it's really beautiful, he said, before you
pray as you stand up to pray think
about, okay this prayer, I'm praying this prayer,
this Salah, for Allah, for this thing meaning,
let's say you're really grateful for something or
you're really struggling with something or you are
just in a moment and you're deeply calling
upon Allah for help or for gratitude with
that thing, you say, this Maghrib that we're
going to pray, oh Allah I'm really struggling
at my job and I'm praying this prayer
as a means of closeness to you, Allah
to help me with this, right, so almost
like make your intention, your thesis for that,
the fourth one, tip that I love is
if you pray at home, inshallah when you
pray at home make your prayer area kind
of special, have a prayer rug, perfume the
prayer rug, that's actually a really good tip
Imam Ghazali says, don't make it too distracting,
like don't pray a lot of people try
for the vibes like, I'm going to pray
in front of my window, it's like, no
don't do that because then you're like, is
that a cardinal?
or is that bird bleeding?
what's going on?
don't do that, pray in an area where
you can have khushu, you can have focus
inshallah, okay how to pray for miracles everything's
a miracle, really, I mean our existence is
miraculous just ask Allah to constantly be with
you and to take care of you and
to guide you and ask for what you
need but always leave it up to Allah
SWT Allah al-alam what if someone has
mental health issues and can't help but be
very annoyed or ungrateful, mental health is real,
but spiritual health is also real and mental
health part of the, and by the way
this is not, I got my masters in
mental health so I'm not speaking like an
imam I'm taking the kufi off, okay mental
health is often times met by spiritual truths
AA, Alcoholics Anonymous the first step that was
established in the process was belief in a
higher power right, now they've removed that for
the secularization of it, but it was there
for a reason and you'll find a lot
of mental health theorists actually were believers in
God and they often invoke the power of
belief in God as being helpful in mental
health, so I'm not denying mental health, of
course, mental health exists right, may Allah SWT,
Allah mentions in the Quran, Arabic Arabic He
tells the Prophet SAW, are you gonna are
you gonna kill yourself because they're not listening
to you because they're not you're preaching to
them and they're not listening so you're gonna
you're gonna like break yourself over this right,
meaning what, anxiety is real, absolutely but don't
think that mental health can only be solved
by mental health, no, spiritual health is part
of the equation, so person says what if
I can't be very, I can't help but
be very annoyed or ungrateful I think you're
selling yourself short I think you can be
grateful I know you can I know that
you can be a person of patience we
all have our irritations and our sensitivities some
days are worse than others don't define yourself
as this type of person, that's the first
mental block that's the first mental block, you
have the ability to be grateful, there was
a man who came to the Prophet SAW,
Ya Rasulallah my heart is hard, he's basically
trying to resign, resignation it is who I
am, Ya Rasulallah Prophet SAW said, go and
wipe the head of an orphan, touch the
head of an orphan, be close to orphans,
why because that will shatter the hardness around
your heart right, the Prophet SAW said what
you're not doing the right things you're kind
of selling yourself short you have to do
the right things okay, may Allah make it
easy when you say complain to Allah, wouldn't
that come off as grateful no because Allah
is different than us complaining to somebody else
can be in gratitude, Allah has told us
through his messenger and through his own words
he loves when we complain to him so
you go to Allah and you complain to
Allah Oh Allah, the Prophet SAW said I
complain to you and it's not ungrateful because
you're complaining to the one who can actually
do something about it but if I complain
to everybody else about my life but I
don't make dua to Allah it's coming off
as me complaining about Allah but I'm not
telling him right I just hate my job
I hate it, I hate it Habibi, no
one's getting you a different job and we
just want to eat, you know like we're
just here for dinner now if you have
a close friend, it's like hey help me,
I want to get a different job or
do you know any people, can you help
me my LinkedIn, networking, etc, etc make dua
for me, all that is productive when I
say complaining, I mean what just hot air
just the way that it is so complaining
to Allah that's a good logical thought oh
I don't want to complain at all Allah
tells you, complain to me complain to me
how do I gain patience with parents you
work very hard at it, subhanAllah and you
realize that your parents had to be patient
with you and you have to be patient
with them and it's a journey it's a
process you know, aging with your parents is
not easy you know some things that you
see are totally nonsensical but it's kind of
like when they saw you and you were
totally nonsensical and that's why when Allah mentions
the process of aging in the Quran, He
says that you started weak, then you became
strong, and then you returned back to weakness
almost as if to say, you were weak
and you have to remember what's the worst
quality again, the person who?
forgets, forgets what it was like so you
know, all the most powerful stories about parents
and parenting are the people who remember, the
children who remember what their parents were like
when they were younger and they try to
have that same mercy and that same empathy
so really work hard at it, it's not
easy, subhanAllah and the Quran is filled with
stories both of great parents and great kids
and tough parents with tough kids so that
we can understand that there's a spectrum and
as long as your relationship with your parents
is functional and healthy no one's relationship is
perfect but functional and healthy you need to
do your best to try to be as
caring and as loving as you can right,
with all of the flaws and all the
mistakes, it's fine it is what it is,
we're all human we're all human, I feel
so disconnected spiritually how should I go back,
subhanAllah just the fact that you're asking shows
you that Allah wants you back you know
a person who's not worried about this that's
the one who needs to be worried but
the person who actually has the courage to
like type this out or to like think
this and verbalize it it's Allah pulling on
your rope just calling you back, right so
the first thing is say alhamdulillah and the
next step is go to pray to Allah
and pray to Allah and when you put
your head on the floor ask Allah just
to keep you close to Him and start
your steps you know one day at a
time can you be better today than you
were yesterday can you be better tomorrow than
you were today there's a narration that says
that Sayyidina Luqman was telling his son that
life is all about being better today than
you were yesterday, that's it and Allah, all
He's looking for is that you take those
steps you're not going to be the sheikh
and this and that tomorrow right, but you
can be a person who is infinitely better
than you were just a few days ago
with these sincere moments with Allah subhanahu wa
ta'ala okay we'll do one last one
because I know that we have some what
did you have for lunch that's what they
asked me I don't even know I forgot
I just had like a bunch of random
snacks Monday is not great for me for
lunch can you wear a necklace of the
ayah of the Quran there's no explicit prohibition
but there are some practical things that one
should think about when it comes to wearing
like jewelry with sacred words on it like
the name of Allah or Quran number one
is like you have to be very careful
going to the bathroom Quran as well I
would be concerned about not being in a
state of wudu and then ultimately the Quran
was not meant to become like jewelry I
know that there's different sort of like oh
well it makes me feel you know close
that's you know I guess for some people
that's fine I can understand I guess but
the Quran is meant to be a book
of guidance not a book of decoration you
know even the stuff that we put around
the space we're getting these cards plaques printed
that explain the verses so that it's still
guidance not just art because it's meant to
be a book of guidance you know and
one of the companions he said I fear
for a day when we use the book
of Allah for ornamentation instead of like implementation
and so even when you look at calligraphy
it's beautiful it inspires us but we all
want to make this an implemented thing so
while there's no explicit prohibition on wearing jewelry
that has Quran on it just think about
those things and maybe you know be a
little bit careful can you settle the pineapple
on pizza debate what do you think Abbas
no alright there he is I'm not offended
he doesn't like pineapple pizza guys there Abbas
said it he's sorry it's ok ok is
it haram to become a nail tech I
don't know what that is ok this is
where we're going to wrap it up inshallah
ok because he's always wearing a kufi you
know you can ask him tomorrow night at
the first halaqa at Valley Rites of Islam
inshallah may Allah accept from us you know
anytime you finish a course of study Allah
sends his blessings so we ask Allah to
accept all of our du'as barakallahu feekum
everybody take care inshallah maghrib is in a
couple minutes so we're going to head to
the musallah for those of you who sat
on the back jacks can you help us
line them up and for the chairs inshallah
if you could just help us stack them
and we're going to head to pray inshallah
in just 60 seconds new
