00:00:01 --> 00:00:10
			In

00:00:10 --> 00:00:21
			the

00:00:21 --> 00:00:25
			In the story of Adiruna, did you know

00:00:25 --> 00:00:28
			that I am in love with what Allah

00:00:28 --> 00:00:30
			has revealed to me?

00:00:31 --> 00:00:35
			And I passed the test in reciting it.

00:00:36 --> 00:00:39
			And I am the first to meet him

00:00:39 --> 00:00:40
			in my life.

00:00:41 --> 00:00:43
			And I am the sheikh of guidance.

00:00:43 --> 00:00:47
			So don't teach me how to recite it.

00:00:47 --> 00:00:49
			In the story of Adiruna, did you know

00:00:49 --> 00:00:53
			that I am in love with what Allah

00:00:53 --> 00:00:54
			has revealed to me?

00:00:54 --> 00:00:58
			And I passed the test in reciting it.

00:01:00 --> 00:01:03
			And I am the first to meet him

00:01:03 --> 00:01:04
			in my life.

00:01:05 --> 00:01:10
			And I am the sheikh of guidance.

00:01:11 --> 00:01:14
			So don't teach me how to recite it.

00:01:14 --> 00:01:15
			And I am the first to meet him

00:01:15 --> 00:01:21
			in my life.

00:01:21 --> 00:01:22
			And I am the sheikh of guidance.

00:01:22 --> 00:01:27
			And I seek refuge in Allah from the

00:01:27 --> 00:01:28
			evil of our souls and from the evil

00:01:28 --> 00:01:29
			of our deeds.

00:01:30 --> 00:01:32
			Whom Allah guides, none can misguide him.

00:01:32 --> 00:01:33
			Whom Allah misguides, none can guide him.

00:01:34 --> 00:01:35
			And we bear witness that there is no

00:01:35 --> 00:01:36
			god but Allah.

00:01:36 --> 00:01:37
			He is alone and has no partner.

00:01:37 --> 00:01:39
			And we bear witness that our master and

00:01:39 --> 00:01:40
			master is Muhammad, his servant and his messenger.

00:01:42 --> 00:01:45
			Allah says in the book of Al-Aziz,

00:01:45 --> 00:01:46
			and I seek refuge in Allah from the

00:01:46 --> 00:01:50
			accursed Satan, that you may hate something while

00:01:50 --> 00:01:51
			it is good for you.

00:01:51 --> 00:01:54
			And he said, So what mercy from Allah

00:01:54 --> 00:01:55
			would you not have for them?

00:01:55 --> 00:01:57
			And if you were a strong hearted person,

00:01:57 --> 00:01:58
			they would not have gone astray from you.

00:01:59 --> 00:02:01
			So forgive them and ask forgiveness for them

00:02:01 --> 00:02:03
			and consult them in the matter.

00:02:03 --> 00:02:05
			And when you have decided, then put your

00:02:05 --> 00:02:05
			trust in Allah.

00:02:06 --> 00:02:07
			Indeed, Allah loves those who put their trust

00:02:07 --> 00:02:07
			in Him.

00:02:10 --> 00:02:14
			My dear respected elders, brothers and sisters, As

00:02:14 --> 00:02:16
			-salamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh.

00:02:19 --> 00:02:24
			As the introduction was made, the thing that

00:02:24 --> 00:02:27
			was mentioned was that many people find themselves

00:02:27 --> 00:02:29
			at a crossroad sometimes.

00:02:30 --> 00:02:33
			They find themselves at a point where they

00:02:33 --> 00:02:34
			seem to be stuck.

00:02:35 --> 00:02:39
			They have two options, two roads to traverse

00:02:39 --> 00:02:43
			and two decisions to make and they don't

00:02:43 --> 00:02:44
			know which decision to take.

00:02:44 --> 00:02:51
			There is a hadith or reported hadith which

00:02:51 --> 00:02:55
			has been mentioned by Tabarani which says مَا

00:02:55 --> 00:03:00
			خَابَ مَنْ اِسْتَخَار وَمَا نَدِمَ مَنْ اِسْتَشَار that

00:03:00 --> 00:03:05
			a person who makes istikhara he will never

00:03:05 --> 00:03:08
			be unsuccessful and a person who makes istishara

00:03:08 --> 00:03:12
			basically he takes advice from people he will

00:03:12 --> 00:03:17
			never be a person who becomes upset at

00:03:17 --> 00:03:20
			something he will never be sorry.

00:03:20 --> 00:03:24
			So this reported hadith according to many scholars

00:03:24 --> 00:03:27
			is weak and Sheikh Albani, he goes as

00:03:27 --> 00:03:30
			far as to say that it's a mawdu

00:03:30 --> 00:03:33
			or a fabricated hadith but the gist of

00:03:33 --> 00:03:36
			the subject is actually supported by the Quran

00:03:36 --> 00:03:41
			and the Sunnah both things the issue of

00:03:41 --> 00:03:45
			istikhara and the issue of istishara and taking

00:03:45 --> 00:03:48
			opinion from people they are both supported from

00:03:48 --> 00:03:50
			the Quran and the Sunnah So first things

00:03:50 --> 00:03:54
			first I'm going to talk about istikhara What

00:03:54 --> 00:03:55
			is istikhara?

00:03:56 --> 00:03:59
			If you look at it linguistically linguistically it

00:03:59 --> 00:04:05
			means to seek khair to seek goodness to

00:04:05 --> 00:04:08
			seek the better way and when you are

00:04:08 --> 00:04:11
			making istikhara you are basically asking Allah SWT

00:04:11 --> 00:04:14
			Oh Allah show me what I'm supposed to

00:04:14 --> 00:04:16
			be doing at this particular juncture in my

00:04:16 --> 00:04:20
			life So this is what istikhara is about

00:04:23 --> 00:04:25
			There are certain things that we need to

00:04:25 --> 00:04:29
			be aware when it comes to istikhara Anybody

00:04:29 --> 00:04:32
			who is familiar with fiqh or even basic

00:04:32 --> 00:04:35
			fiqh he's aware that there are certain categories

00:04:35 --> 00:04:39
			of ibadat and categories of ahkam that a

00:04:39 --> 00:04:41
			person is supposed to be doing They are

00:04:41 --> 00:04:45
			the faraid they are the wajibat the sunan,

00:04:46 --> 00:04:51
			the nawafil the mandubat meaning the mustahabbat So

00:04:51 --> 00:04:55
			in these things there is no istikhara There

00:04:55 --> 00:04:57
			is no istikhara about these things Well should

00:04:57 --> 00:05:00
			I get up to pray fajr or not?

00:05:01 --> 00:05:04
			Well Do you need to make istikhara to

00:05:04 --> 00:05:04
			pray fajr?

00:05:05 --> 00:05:07
			No, you have to pray fajr You cannot

00:05:07 --> 00:05:11
			basically shirk your responsibility and throw it at

00:05:11 --> 00:05:13
			Allah SWT and ask him to guide you

00:05:13 --> 00:05:15
			in this respect because he has already laid

00:05:15 --> 00:05:18
			down the rules for this thing So in

00:05:18 --> 00:05:21
			these ahkam there is no istikhara that you're

00:05:21 --> 00:05:23
			supposed to be doing Istikhara is therefore then

00:05:23 --> 00:05:28
			only in the things which a person is

00:05:28 --> 00:05:30
			supposed to be doing and he is he

00:05:30 --> 00:05:34
			has basically for example he has two wajibs

00:05:35 --> 00:05:37
			two obligatory things that come up to him

00:05:38 --> 00:05:40
			and he doesn't know which option to take

00:05:40 --> 00:05:43
			For example the issue of getting married has

00:05:43 --> 00:05:46
			come up to him and the obligation of

00:05:46 --> 00:05:47
			hajj has come up to him at the

00:05:47 --> 00:05:51
			same time So now at that particular juncture

00:05:51 --> 00:05:54
			at that crossroads what does he decide?

00:05:54 --> 00:05:56
			What does he do at that time at

00:05:56 --> 00:05:56
			that point?

00:05:57 --> 00:05:59
			This is the time where he should make

00:05:59 --> 00:06:07
			istikhara Ok So two girls give a proposal

00:06:07 --> 00:06:09
			for marriage or one girl gives a proposal

00:06:09 --> 00:06:13
			for marriage Should he proceed with this marriage

00:06:13 --> 00:06:13
			or not?

00:06:13 --> 00:06:16
			That's when you make istikhara A person gets

00:06:16 --> 00:06:19
			a job offer and he is wondering whether

00:06:19 --> 00:06:21
			he should take that job or not This

00:06:21 --> 00:06:24
			is the time where you make istikhara The

00:06:24 --> 00:06:27
			opportunity arises to move from one place to

00:06:27 --> 00:06:30
			another place This is a huge step in

00:06:30 --> 00:06:34
			one's life especially from moving from country to

00:06:34 --> 00:06:36
			country At that point a person should make

00:06:36 --> 00:06:40
			istikhara So this istikhara actually if you look

00:06:40 --> 00:06:44
			at the history behind it it replaced a

00:06:44 --> 00:06:45
			lot of things that the Arabs used to

00:06:45 --> 00:06:49
			do in the past which were superstitions So

00:06:49 --> 00:06:52
			those superstitions that the Arabs used to they

00:06:52 --> 00:06:58
			used to practice were known as tiyarah Ok

00:06:58 --> 00:07:01
			And the Prophet ﷺ he mentioned in one

00:07:01 --> 00:07:08
			hadith Basically four kinds of superstitions that the

00:07:08 --> 00:07:11
			people used to practice He said that there

00:07:11 --> 00:07:13
			is no such thing everything is from Allah

00:07:13 --> 00:07:16
			SWT One of those things was called tiyarah

00:07:17 --> 00:07:20
			Tiyarah is from the word tayf which means

00:07:20 --> 00:07:22
			bird And what the people used to do

00:07:22 --> 00:07:24
			they used to leave their house in the

00:07:24 --> 00:07:27
			morning and they used to see in which

00:07:27 --> 00:07:30
			direction are the birds flying So for example

00:07:30 --> 00:07:32
			if they are flying from left to right

00:07:32 --> 00:07:35
			that means it's a good day today Ok

00:07:35 --> 00:07:37
			I can proceed with my business I should

00:07:37 --> 00:07:39
			go ahead and do what I am supposed

00:07:39 --> 00:07:40
			to be doing because everything is going to

00:07:40 --> 00:07:43
			turn out fine But if they are flying

00:07:43 --> 00:07:46
			in the opposite direction then that's it go

00:07:46 --> 00:07:49
			back inside because it's going to be an

00:07:49 --> 00:07:53
			unlucky day It's going to be a misfortunate

00:07:53 --> 00:07:56
			day So people used to take this flying

00:07:56 --> 00:07:58
			of the birds from left to right or

00:07:58 --> 00:08:01
			right to left as an omen And in

00:08:01 --> 00:08:03
			this day and age we have similar omens

00:08:03 --> 00:08:05
			that we kind of think about and we

00:08:05 --> 00:08:09
			even believe in sometimes Alright So you have

00:08:09 --> 00:08:12
			a black cat crossing your path Ok So

00:08:12 --> 00:08:13
			it's going to be a bad luck day

00:08:13 --> 00:08:15
			today Some people say good luck some say

00:08:15 --> 00:08:19
			bad luck A person walks under a ladder

00:08:19 --> 00:08:21
			and he says I'm going to get 7

00:08:21 --> 00:08:24
			years bad luck Alright Have you heard of

00:08:24 --> 00:08:24
			these things before?

00:08:25 --> 00:08:27
			Alright If you walk under a ladder that's

00:08:27 --> 00:08:29
			7 years bad luck Or if you break

00:08:29 --> 00:08:32
			a mirror that's 7 years bad luck All

00:08:32 --> 00:08:35
			of these are superstitions Ok All of these

00:08:35 --> 00:08:37
			are wrong and they are tantamount to shirk

00:08:38 --> 00:08:39
			And let me give you a couple more

00:08:39 --> 00:08:43
			examples that people practice and think about You've

00:08:43 --> 00:08:46
			probably heard the phrase Touch wood, right?

00:08:46 --> 00:08:49
			Ok You say that Ok, Alhamdulillah, my job's

00:08:49 --> 00:08:52
			going fine And then touch wood You would

00:08:52 --> 00:08:54
			go to a table which has wood in

00:08:54 --> 00:08:57
			it and you touch the wood Does anybody

00:08:57 --> 00:08:59
			even know what the significance of that is?

00:08:59 --> 00:09:00
			And where that came from?

00:09:01 --> 00:09:04
			Ok If you look at the books of

00:09:04 --> 00:09:06
			history you'll find that in the old days

00:09:06 --> 00:09:09
			the people that used to believe in these

00:09:09 --> 00:09:12
			superstitions and they used to practice pagan rituals

00:09:12 --> 00:09:16
			they used to see woodpeckers pecking at the

00:09:16 --> 00:09:19
			tree trunks Ok, you've seen a woodpecker, right?

00:09:20 --> 00:09:21
			Who knows what a woodpecker is?

00:09:21 --> 00:09:21
			Everybody know?

00:09:22 --> 00:09:24
			Ok Do they call it a woodpecker in

00:09:24 --> 00:09:25
			Australia?

00:09:26 --> 00:09:27
			Or is it a kookaburra?

00:09:28 --> 00:09:29
			What's a kookaburra?

00:09:29 --> 00:09:30
			Is that a kind of a woodpecker too?

00:09:31 --> 00:09:31
			No?

00:09:31 --> 00:09:35
			Alright Ok, so woodpecker they used to see

00:09:35 --> 00:09:38
			it pecking on the tree And they used

00:09:38 --> 00:09:41
			to say that this woodpecker this bird he's

00:09:41 --> 00:09:45
			actually conversing he's talking to the tree he's

00:09:45 --> 00:09:47
			talking to the god which is found in

00:09:47 --> 00:09:50
			the tree So they used to think that

00:09:50 --> 00:09:53
			touching wood at any given time was good

00:09:53 --> 00:09:57
			luck Ok, just like this woodpecker touching the

00:09:57 --> 00:10:00
			wood which has the god inside it it

00:10:00 --> 00:10:02
			is good luck So that's what they used

00:10:02 --> 00:10:05
			to believe Then you may have come across

00:10:05 --> 00:10:07
			this thing that people have which is called

00:10:07 --> 00:10:10
			a rabbit's foot Ok They carry a rabbit's

00:10:10 --> 00:10:13
			foot around them for good luck Ok The

00:10:13 --> 00:10:16
			history behind that is that people they used

00:10:16 --> 00:10:19
			to see rabbits and if you've ever seen

00:10:19 --> 00:10:20
			a rabbit in the wild or even as

00:10:20 --> 00:10:25
			a pet it basically rubs the ground Ok

00:10:25 --> 00:10:26
			It tries to dig into the ground It

00:10:26 --> 00:10:29
			burrows into the ground So the people used

00:10:29 --> 00:10:32
			to say that this rabbit is basically conversing

00:10:32 --> 00:10:35
			with the gods of the earth Ok So

00:10:35 --> 00:10:39
			because this paw of the rabbit the foot

00:10:39 --> 00:10:42
			of the rabbit was used to converse with

00:10:42 --> 00:10:44
			the gods of the earth that means it

00:10:44 --> 00:10:46
			must be very lucky So they used to

00:10:46 --> 00:10:49
			keep this rabbit paw with them Ok So

00:10:49 --> 00:10:53
			these are examples that people still believe in

00:10:53 --> 00:10:55
			and practice yet they are tantamount to shirk

00:10:57 --> 00:10:59
			More common examples that you may have heard

00:10:59 --> 00:11:03
			of and especially found that are prevalent in

00:11:03 --> 00:11:05
			the Indian subcontinent are the issue of palm

00:11:05 --> 00:11:08
			reading You go to a palm reader which

00:11:08 --> 00:11:11
			is completely haram Any kind of fortune telling

00:11:11 --> 00:11:14
			it is not permissible It is haram to

00:11:14 --> 00:11:17
			engage in fortune telling and to go to

00:11:17 --> 00:11:19
			a person who reads your fortune or reads

00:11:19 --> 00:11:22
			your palm and tells you what the future

00:11:22 --> 00:11:24
			holds for you We should not be believing

00:11:24 --> 00:11:26
			in it and a person who does that

00:11:26 --> 00:11:29
			he is basically stepping into the boundaries of

00:11:29 --> 00:11:30
			shirk He is not supposed to be We

00:11:30 --> 00:11:32
			are not supposed to be engaging in any

00:11:32 --> 00:11:35
			type of fortune telling Another aspect of that

00:11:35 --> 00:11:38
			is astrology Ok It is very common if

00:11:38 --> 00:11:41
			you go to India and Pakistan they ask

00:11:41 --> 00:11:42
			you Hey what is your star sign?

00:11:43 --> 00:11:44
			Ok Are you a Taurus?

00:11:44 --> 00:11:45
			Are you a Pisces?

00:11:46 --> 00:11:47
			Are you this or are you that?

00:11:47 --> 00:11:48
			Are you Scorpio?

00:11:49 --> 00:11:52
			And again all of that is related to

00:11:52 --> 00:11:54
			seeing the future by looking into the stars

00:11:54 --> 00:11:58
			And again completely haram and complete form of

00:11:58 --> 00:12:01
			shirk So all of these things we have

00:12:01 --> 00:12:04
			to sideline them and replace them with something

00:12:04 --> 00:12:08
			which is known as istikhara Seeking khair from

00:12:08 --> 00:12:12
			Allah SWT and seeking this guidance from Allah

00:12:12 --> 00:12:15
			SWT And ultimately what is istikhara?

00:12:16 --> 00:12:19
			It is a form of dua The sahaba

00:12:19 --> 00:12:23
			mention that the Prophet SAW he used to

00:12:23 --> 00:12:25
			teach us istikhara just like he used to

00:12:25 --> 00:12:28
			teach us a surah of the Quran He

00:12:28 --> 00:12:31
			taught us istikhara just like he taught us

00:12:31 --> 00:12:33
			a surah of the Quran The famous dua

00:12:34 --> 00:12:36
			many of you may know it many of

00:12:36 --> 00:13:17
			you may not is Basically

00:13:17 --> 00:13:20
			the translation is Oh Allah, I seek khair

00:13:20 --> 00:13:23
			from you I seek khair from you I

00:13:23 --> 00:13:28
			seek goodness from you And I ask you

00:13:28 --> 00:13:31
			to give from your own power your qudra

00:13:36 --> 00:13:41
			Let me just pull it up And I

00:13:41 --> 00:13:46
			ask you from your generosity Because you know

00:13:46 --> 00:13:48
			you are able and I am not able

00:13:48 --> 00:13:51
			And you know and I don't know You

00:13:51 --> 00:13:54
			are the knower of the unseen Oh Allah,

00:13:54 --> 00:13:56
			if you know that this situation that I

00:13:56 --> 00:13:59
			am making istikhara about if it is good

00:13:59 --> 00:14:02
			for me in my deen, my religion and

00:14:02 --> 00:14:11
			my sustenance and in my last abode there

00:14:11 --> 00:14:14
			are different wordings found in different versions of

00:14:14 --> 00:14:16
			the book then make it easy for me

00:14:16 --> 00:14:19
			and then give barakah in it for me

00:14:19 --> 00:14:22
			and if you know that this situation is

00:14:22 --> 00:14:24
			bad for me then keep it away from

00:14:24 --> 00:14:27
			me keep me away from it and then

00:14:27 --> 00:14:30
			make khair available for me wherever it is

00:14:30 --> 00:14:33
			So this is the istikhara So the Prophet

00:14:33 --> 00:14:35
			SAW used to teach the sahaba that whenever

00:14:35 --> 00:14:37
			you are at this situation in your life

00:14:37 --> 00:14:40
			when you need to make a decision then

00:14:40 --> 00:14:43
			you should pray two rakah of istikhara and

00:14:43 --> 00:14:46
			then make this dua to Allah SWT Now

00:14:46 --> 00:14:49
			there are certain things that people assume about

00:14:49 --> 00:14:54
			istikhara which are incorrect Many people assume that

00:14:54 --> 00:14:56
			they are supposed to actually get a dream

00:14:56 --> 00:15:00
			after making istikhara Alright, they think that I

00:15:00 --> 00:15:02
			must get a dream otherwise my istikhara is

00:15:02 --> 00:15:07
			invalid Many people also think that I must

00:15:07 --> 00:15:10
			get a feeling inside of me that this

00:15:10 --> 00:15:13
			is the path that I should tread and

00:15:13 --> 00:15:15
			they think that that feeling is the guidance

00:15:15 --> 00:15:19
			for them and again this is incorrect So

00:15:19 --> 00:15:21
			these two things are kind of myths which

00:15:21 --> 00:15:25
			are propagated about istikhara The Prophet SAW didn't

00:15:25 --> 00:15:29
			tell people about dreams and if a person

00:15:29 --> 00:15:30
			has a dream that's all well and good

00:15:30 --> 00:15:33
			but if a person does not he should

00:15:33 --> 00:15:36
			not panic A person should continue to make

00:15:36 --> 00:15:39
			the dua of istikhara as long as he

00:15:39 --> 00:15:41
			is in this quandary as long as he

00:15:41 --> 00:15:45
			is in this confusion He will see the

00:15:45 --> 00:15:47
			situation will open up in front of him

00:15:47 --> 00:15:50
			If for example in the situation of marrying

00:15:50 --> 00:15:53
			a girl you know the parents start giving

00:15:53 --> 00:15:55
			a hard time they don't accept the proposal

00:15:56 --> 00:15:58
			Ok, so what's going to happen is you

00:15:58 --> 00:16:00
			will realize that this is not the path

00:16:00 --> 00:16:02
			for me to take and you will pull

00:16:02 --> 00:16:05
			yourself back Let me tell you something else

00:16:05 --> 00:16:08
			while I'm on the subject of marriage Many

00:16:08 --> 00:16:11
			people basically get into a relationship and then

00:16:11 --> 00:16:12
			they get in so deep to a relationship

00:16:13 --> 00:16:16
			that after falling in love head over heels

00:16:16 --> 00:16:20
			and then realizing or thinking assuming that I

00:16:20 --> 00:16:23
			cannot live with this person anymore that's when

00:16:23 --> 00:16:25
			they start making istikhara Alright?

00:16:26 --> 00:16:29
			That's not the time to make istikhara Now

00:16:29 --> 00:16:32
			your heart is basically with that person You're

00:16:32 --> 00:16:34
			in love with that person Ok?

00:16:34 --> 00:16:37
			Or you're besotted with that person Ok?

00:16:37 --> 00:16:41
			You're devoted to that person So at that

00:16:41 --> 00:16:44
			point any kind of istikhara that you do

00:16:44 --> 00:16:46
			is going to be contaminated with your own

00:16:46 --> 00:16:49
			feelings with your own feelings that you already

00:16:49 --> 00:16:52
			have in your heart So now it's too

00:16:52 --> 00:16:56
			late to perform istikhara because after performing the

00:16:56 --> 00:16:59
			istikhara you're going to think Yes, this is

00:16:59 --> 00:17:01
			the person I want to marry and it's

00:17:01 --> 00:17:03
			not the istikhara that's going to influence you

00:17:03 --> 00:17:06
			It is your own desire that's influencing you

00:17:06 --> 00:17:08
			So there's a point where you're supposed to

00:17:08 --> 00:17:12
			make istikhara and not cross that point not

00:17:12 --> 00:17:15
			get into a situation so deeply that you

00:17:15 --> 00:17:16
			want to be in that situation and then

00:17:16 --> 00:17:19
			perform istikhara At that point it's too late

00:17:20 --> 00:17:23
			At the beginning of the proposal at the

00:17:23 --> 00:17:25
			beginning of seeking a job at the beginning

00:17:25 --> 00:17:28
			of applying for a job or getting the

00:17:28 --> 00:17:32
			job you know, response that's the time when

00:17:32 --> 00:17:35
			you make the istikhara and then after that

00:17:35 --> 00:17:37
			you will get a realization of what is

00:17:37 --> 00:17:41
			correct and what is incorrect Another thing we

00:17:41 --> 00:17:44
			need to keep in mind is that ultimately

00:17:45 --> 00:17:49
			istikhara is a dua istikhara it's a dua

00:17:49 --> 00:17:54
			to Allah SWT and being a dua all

00:17:54 --> 00:17:56
			of the rules and regulations that are related

00:17:56 --> 00:17:59
			to dua the acceptance of the dua they

00:17:59 --> 00:18:03
			are also connected to this particular dua so

00:18:03 --> 00:18:06
			if a person is earning haram then the

00:18:06 --> 00:18:09
			dua is unlikely to be accepted if a

00:18:09 --> 00:18:13
			person is making dua of qatr ur rahm

00:18:13 --> 00:18:16
			or he is engaged in sins which would

00:18:17 --> 00:18:19
			nullify a dua or make the dua not

00:18:19 --> 00:18:23
			accepted or he is making a dua without

00:18:23 --> 00:18:25
			the hope in Allah SWT that the dua

00:18:25 --> 00:18:28
			is going to be accepted he is despondent

00:18:28 --> 00:18:31
			about the acceptance of his duas then this

00:18:31 --> 00:18:33
			dua of istikhara will also not be accepted

00:18:33 --> 00:18:37
			because ultimately it's a dua so what people

00:18:37 --> 00:18:40
			tend to do with this dua and other

00:18:40 --> 00:18:43
			duas it's very very common that they think

00:18:43 --> 00:18:46
			that I'm a sinner I commit sins I

00:18:46 --> 00:18:50
			make mistakes so my dua is unlikely to

00:18:50 --> 00:18:52
			be accepted so I'm not going to make

00:18:52 --> 00:18:54
			dua I'm going to tell my imam or

00:18:54 --> 00:18:57
			the sheikh in the masjid or a pious

00:18:57 --> 00:19:00
			person that I know my grandfather my grandmother

00:19:00 --> 00:19:03
			to make dua for me okay and there's

00:19:03 --> 00:19:05
			nothing wrong with that even the Prophet A

00:19:05 --> 00:19:10
			.S. he when Umar was going for umrah

00:19:10 --> 00:19:13
			one day he told him don't forget us

00:19:13 --> 00:19:17
			in your duas oh my little brother don't

00:19:17 --> 00:19:21
			forget us in your duas so asking somebody

00:19:21 --> 00:19:23
			for dua there's nothing particularly wrong with that

00:19:24 --> 00:19:27
			but with this understanding that I'm such a

00:19:27 --> 00:19:30
			sinner and I'm committing so many sins I'm

00:19:30 --> 00:19:32
			not praying my five time salat on time

00:19:32 --> 00:19:33
			so how is my dua going to be

00:19:33 --> 00:19:36
			accepted this is the wrong kind of attitude

00:19:36 --> 00:19:39
			you're basically what we call a cop out

00:19:39 --> 00:19:42
			you're copying out of your responsibility of being

00:19:42 --> 00:19:44
			a good Muslim and then the next stage

00:19:44 --> 00:19:47
			of that is that you're not willing to

00:19:47 --> 00:19:49
			even raise your hands to Allah because you

00:19:49 --> 00:19:51
			feel ashamed to raise your hands to Allah

00:19:52 --> 00:19:55
			so if I have that feeling then instead

00:19:55 --> 00:19:57
			of copying out of this and telling other

00:19:57 --> 00:20:00
			people to make dua for me then I

00:20:00 --> 00:20:03
			should actually see within myself the mistakes that

00:20:03 --> 00:20:05
			I'm making and the sins that I'm committing

00:20:05 --> 00:20:08
			and the deficiencies that I have and then

00:20:08 --> 00:20:11
			I should try to fix those deficiencies until

00:20:11 --> 00:20:14
			I feel confident in the acceptance of my

00:20:14 --> 00:20:17
			dua and then on top of that a

00:20:17 --> 00:20:19
			person should never feel that the dua is

00:20:19 --> 00:20:23
			rejected or not heard by Allah SWT you

00:20:23 --> 00:20:25
			know the ayah why it was revealed is

00:20:25 --> 00:20:32
			because will write O my slaves who have

00:20:32 --> 00:20:35
			transgressed against themselves do not despair from the

00:20:35 --> 00:20:38
			rahmah of Allah SWT who is the person

00:20:38 --> 00:20:41
			about whom this ayah was revealed the person

00:20:41 --> 00:20:44
			who killed Hamza in the battle of Uhud

00:20:44 --> 00:20:46
			which I'll talk about in a few minutes

00:20:47 --> 00:20:50
			so the dua is first and foremost we

00:20:50 --> 00:20:52
			should learn how to make dua we should

00:20:53 --> 00:20:56
			make our lifestyle in such a way that

00:20:56 --> 00:20:58
			we feel confident in raising our hands to

00:20:58 --> 00:21:01
			Allah SWT and asking from Him where we

00:21:01 --> 00:21:03
			spread our hands in front of Allah SWT

00:21:03 --> 00:21:06
			and feel confident that my life is pure

00:21:06 --> 00:21:08
			and clean to the extent that I can

00:21:08 --> 00:21:10
			raise my hands and even if there are

00:21:10 --> 00:21:13
			deficiencies in me I should be able to

00:21:13 --> 00:21:16
			and I should take my time out to

00:21:16 --> 00:21:19
			raise my hands to Allah SWT and make

00:21:19 --> 00:21:20
			dua that oh Allah take me out of

00:21:20 --> 00:21:22
			the problems that I'm in take me out

00:21:22 --> 00:21:24
			of the sins that I'm committing so that

00:21:24 --> 00:21:27
			I can be your pious slave so these

00:21:27 --> 00:21:29
			things we have to be aware about istikhara

00:21:29 --> 00:21:35
			ok this is istikhara and remember this one

00:21:35 --> 00:21:39
			of the biggest benefits of making istikhara it's

00:21:39 --> 00:21:42
			a huge benefit is that you will never

00:21:42 --> 00:21:44
			be depressed about the situation that you're in

00:21:45 --> 00:21:48
			you'll never be depressed you'll never feel suicidal

00:21:48 --> 00:21:52
			so many people they commit suicide because the

00:21:52 --> 00:21:57
			girl that they loved basically rejected them ok

00:21:57 --> 00:22:00
			or they commit suicide because they lost money

00:22:00 --> 00:22:03
			in the stock market alright but a person

00:22:03 --> 00:22:07
			when he makes istikhara he is guided to

00:22:07 --> 00:22:10
			such a degree that he realizes that if

00:22:10 --> 00:22:13
			that proposal that I sent to that girl

00:22:13 --> 00:22:17
			didn't go through then maybe Allah knows something

00:22:17 --> 00:22:19
			about that girl that I'm not aware of

00:22:19 --> 00:22:22
			right now but I will find out later

00:22:22 --> 00:22:24
			that she was not a good choice for

00:22:24 --> 00:22:28
			me same thing for the sisters that have

00:22:28 --> 00:22:34
			proposals sent to guys to brothers if the

00:22:34 --> 00:22:37
			proposal doesn't go through then they will realize

00:22:37 --> 00:22:42
			after they perform istikhara maybe Allah SWT He

00:22:42 --> 00:22:44
			knows something about that person that I'm not

00:22:44 --> 00:22:47
			aware of and He is keeping me away

00:22:47 --> 00:22:49
			from that person and it is better for

00:22:49 --> 00:22:52
			me that right now He is taken away

00:22:52 --> 00:22:54
			from my life so that I don't have

00:22:54 --> 00:22:56
			problems in the future so when a person

00:22:56 --> 00:23:00
			he loses the thing that he was anticipating

00:23:00 --> 00:23:03
			but he did istikhara in the course of

00:23:03 --> 00:23:07
			pursuing that thing he will feel comfortable and

00:23:07 --> 00:23:10
			at ease that Allah SWT actually saved me

00:23:10 --> 00:23:13
			from a problem and didn't allow me to

00:23:13 --> 00:23:16
			get into a situation which I might regret

00:23:16 --> 00:23:20
			later so this is the biggest benefit of

00:23:20 --> 00:23:23
			istikhara now moving on to the other thing

00:23:24 --> 00:23:26
			with istikhara there is something that is known

00:23:26 --> 00:23:30
			as istishara istishara means that a person actually

00:23:30 --> 00:23:33
			takes advice from other people and this is

00:23:33 --> 00:23:35
			one of the biggest shortfalls that we have

00:23:35 --> 00:23:37
			from the younger generation they don't want to

00:23:37 --> 00:23:39
			take advice from the elders because they think

00:23:39 --> 00:23:43
			they know it all they assume that just

00:23:43 --> 00:23:46
			because they can find everything on google sheikh

00:23:46 --> 00:23:48
			google tells them to do this or to

00:23:48 --> 00:23:52
			do that then that is the best advice

00:23:52 --> 00:23:54
			and it is the most correct advice the

00:23:54 --> 00:23:56
			reality is that when you talk to an

00:23:56 --> 00:23:59
			older person when you talk to your parents

00:23:59 --> 00:24:02
			when you talk to your teacher when you

00:24:02 --> 00:24:04
			talk to your sheikh your imam you are

00:24:04 --> 00:24:08
			benefiting from knowledge and experience so it is

00:24:08 --> 00:24:11
			important to take istishara and to take advice

00:24:11 --> 00:24:14
			from people and to sit down this concept

00:24:14 --> 00:24:18
			of istishara and shura or mashura is something

00:24:18 --> 00:24:19
			that we need to implement in our daily

00:24:19 --> 00:24:22
			lives husbands they need to make mashura with

00:24:22 --> 00:24:25
			their wives about a decision that they are

00:24:25 --> 00:24:27
			about to make should we buy this new

00:24:27 --> 00:24:29
			property or not should we buy this house

00:24:29 --> 00:24:31
			or not should we move to a new

00:24:31 --> 00:24:34
			locality or not so these things both go

00:24:34 --> 00:24:38
			hand in hand istihara and istishara and there

00:24:38 --> 00:24:39
			are a few verses in the quran which

00:24:39 --> 00:24:43
			talk about this issue of istishara first of

00:24:43 --> 00:24:51
			all allah swt describes this worldly life everything

00:24:53 --> 00:24:56
			you've been given in this world it is

00:24:56 --> 00:24:58
			just the benefit of this world and whatever

00:24:58 --> 00:25:01
			is with allah swt that is better and

00:25:01 --> 00:25:05
			more everlasting and then allah swt goes on

00:25:05 --> 00:25:13
			to say this is for the people of

00:25:13 --> 00:25:15
			iman and they have trust in allah swt

00:25:26 --> 00:25:31
			these people they stay away from maasi they

00:25:31 --> 00:25:34
			stay away from the kabair and whenever they

00:25:34 --> 00:25:39
			have any kind of situation whenever they want

00:25:39 --> 00:25:41
			to decide something they do it by shura

00:25:41 --> 00:25:45
			and mutual consultation now let me tell you

00:25:45 --> 00:25:48
			a story my time is quickly running out

00:25:48 --> 00:25:50
			and this is the story of the battle

00:25:50 --> 00:25:53
			of uhud who knows the story of the

00:25:53 --> 00:25:59
			battle of uhud hands up like 50%

00:25:59 --> 00:26:01
			of you are putting up your hands i'm

00:26:01 --> 00:26:02
			sure more of you know the story of

00:26:02 --> 00:26:05
			the battle of uhud what happened in the

00:26:05 --> 00:26:08
			battle of uhud was this was the second

00:26:08 --> 00:26:11
			major battle in islam and this took place

00:26:11 --> 00:26:15
			just outside medina the prophet a.s. he

00:26:15 --> 00:26:19
			had put on the side it's called the

00:26:19 --> 00:26:21
			battle of uhud because it took place right

00:26:21 --> 00:26:24
			next to the uhud mountain anybody who's been

00:26:24 --> 00:26:27
			to medina knows that in front of uhud

00:26:27 --> 00:26:29
			there's a small mountain which is known as

00:26:29 --> 00:26:34
			the mountain of the archers the prophet a

00:26:34 --> 00:26:37
			.s. had put some archers on top of

00:26:37 --> 00:26:41
			this mountain and told them that even if

00:26:41 --> 00:26:44
			you see the vultures picking at our dead

00:26:44 --> 00:26:47
			bodies do not move from this spot he

00:26:47 --> 00:26:50
			told them with such great emphasis that you're

00:26:50 --> 00:26:53
			not supposed to leave this place so the

00:26:53 --> 00:26:56
			idea was that you're protecting us from being

00:26:56 --> 00:27:01
			attacked from behind so what happened was the

00:27:01 --> 00:27:04
			battle started and the muslims started getting a

00:27:04 --> 00:27:08
			victory they started winning the disbelievers they started

00:27:08 --> 00:27:11
			retreating and it looked like victory was in

00:27:11 --> 00:27:15
			the hands of the muslims these archers that

00:27:15 --> 00:27:17
			were on top of this mountain this small

00:27:17 --> 00:27:21
			mountain they got excited they said victory is

00:27:21 --> 00:27:24
			ours and they started running down the mountain

00:27:24 --> 00:27:31
			thinking that victory was sealed khalid who was

00:27:31 --> 00:27:35
			not yet a muslim he saw these archers

00:27:35 --> 00:27:37
			had left their position and he decided to

00:27:37 --> 00:27:43
			take the battalion behind the muslims that the

00:27:43 --> 00:27:45
			place where which had been protected by the

00:27:45 --> 00:27:48
			archers up until now he took this battalion

00:27:48 --> 00:27:52
			behind the muslims and now the muslims were

00:27:52 --> 00:27:56
			sandwiched in between the disbelievers from both sides

00:27:56 --> 00:27:59
			they were being attacked in the course of

00:27:59 --> 00:28:03
			this confusion what happened was that 70 sahaba

00:28:03 --> 00:28:07
			lost their lives 70 sahaba they had lost

00:28:07 --> 00:28:10
			their lives it would seem needlessly and amongst

00:28:10 --> 00:28:14
			them the beloved uncle of our prophet who

00:28:14 --> 00:28:21
			was killed by about whom this ayah was

00:28:21 --> 00:28:26
			revealed that i was talking about earlier even

00:28:26 --> 00:28:28
			the prophet he was injured in this battle

00:28:29 --> 00:28:32
			his face was bleeding his tooth was broken

00:28:33 --> 00:28:36
			he was hit to such a point that

00:28:36 --> 00:28:39
			somebody hit him and the chain mail the

00:28:39 --> 00:28:42
			chain mail of his helmet basically got embedded

00:28:42 --> 00:28:46
			into his cheek ok so the metal actually

00:28:46 --> 00:28:48
			went into his cheek directly into his cheek

00:28:48 --> 00:28:51
			and even there was a rumor spread around

00:28:51 --> 00:28:54
			about the prophet that he had been killed

00:28:55 --> 00:28:58
			so mass confusion ensued at that particular time

00:28:58 --> 00:29:01
			especially when you think that our leader the

00:29:01 --> 00:29:03
			person that we've been following all these years

00:29:03 --> 00:29:06
			he's been killed you can imagine the confusion

00:29:06 --> 00:29:11
			that reigned at that particular time anyway after

00:29:11 --> 00:29:16
			the battle finished and the muslims basically went

00:29:16 --> 00:29:23
			back to medina the prophet he didn't make

00:29:23 --> 00:29:26
			a huge fuss about these archers that had

00:29:26 --> 00:29:30
			left their position allah he says about this

00:29:30 --> 00:29:34
			attitude of the prophet and he actually tells

00:29:34 --> 00:29:36
			him and gives him some advice which is

00:29:36 --> 00:29:39
			such beautiful advice for any person who's any

00:29:39 --> 00:29:42
			kind of in any kind of leadership position

00:29:43 --> 00:29:46
			allah says directly to the prophet alayhis salatu

00:29:46 --> 00:29:50
			wasalam ...

00:29:51 --> 00:29:51
			...

00:29:55 --> 00:29:56
			...

00:29:58 --> 00:29:58
			...

00:30:00 --> 00:30:01
			...

00:30:01 --> 00:30:01
			...

00:30:02 --> 00:30:02
			...

00:30:02 --> 00:30:02
			...

00:30:02 --> 00:30:03
			...

00:30:03 --> 00:30:04
			...

00:30:04 --> 00:30:06
			because of the fact oh prophet you have

00:30:07 --> 00:30:09
			mercy inside of you and you are gentle

00:30:09 --> 00:30:14
			towards them you are gentle towards them and

00:30:14 --> 00:30:17
			if you had been severe and hard-hearted

00:30:17 --> 00:30:20
			towards them they would have dispersed from around

00:30:20 --> 00:30:26
			you so forgive them forgive those people that

00:30:26 --> 00:30:29
			because of their mistake 70 people were killed

00:30:29 --> 00:30:32
			killed, including your uncle was killed, forgive them,

00:30:33 --> 00:30:40
			Allah SWT is saying, forgive them, seek forgiveness

00:30:40 --> 00:30:42
			from Allah SWT for them.

00:30:43 --> 00:30:45
			And then this is the key point here.

00:30:46 --> 00:30:51
			The next point, those same people that made

00:30:51 --> 00:30:57
			this mistake, continue to seek their advice, continue

00:30:57 --> 00:31:01
			to make shura with them, continue to take

00:31:01 --> 00:31:01
			their opinion.

00:31:03 --> 00:31:05
			From the people that made this huge mistake,

00:31:06 --> 00:31:09
			this shows us the importance of shura.

00:31:10 --> 00:31:12
			The Prophet SAW, he could have taken his

00:31:12 --> 00:31:16
			advice and guidance directly from Allah SWT, true

00:31:16 --> 00:31:16
			or no?

00:31:17 --> 00:31:20
			He could have taken his guidance directly from

00:31:20 --> 00:31:23
			Allah SWT, but Allah SWT told him no.

00:31:23 --> 00:31:27
			Those same companions of yours, yes they made

00:31:27 --> 00:31:30
			this mistake, yes they didn't listen to you,

00:31:30 --> 00:31:32
			yes they should have stayed on that mountain,

00:31:33 --> 00:31:37
			but forgive them because everybody makes mistakes and

00:31:37 --> 00:31:39
			continue to seek advice from them.

00:31:40 --> 00:31:45
			And after taking their advice, once you've decided

00:31:45 --> 00:31:50
			to take a course, then put your trust

00:31:50 --> 00:31:50
			in Allah SWT.

00:31:51 --> 00:31:55
			So this really should impress upon us the

00:31:55 --> 00:31:57
			importance of the shura that even the Prophet

00:31:57 --> 00:32:01
			SAW was commanded by Allah SWT, not requested,

00:32:01 --> 00:32:04
			commanded by Allah SWT to take shura from

00:32:04 --> 00:32:05
			those sahaba.

00:32:06 --> 00:32:09
			Those same sahaba that made the mistake, Allah

00:32:09 --> 00:32:12
			SWT told the Prophet to continue to take

00:32:12 --> 00:32:13
			shura from them.

00:32:14 --> 00:32:19
			So obviously, as humans, as families, as people

00:32:19 --> 00:32:23
			working in an organisation, within a masjid or

00:32:23 --> 00:32:25
			a school, there are people that are going

00:32:25 --> 00:32:28
			to obviously make mistakes, because we're all human.

00:32:28 --> 00:32:30
			Does that mean that we kind of boycott

00:32:30 --> 00:32:32
			those people that make mistakes?

00:32:33 --> 00:32:33
			No.

00:32:34 --> 00:32:35
			We need to keep them in the fold.

00:32:36 --> 00:32:37
			We need to keep them connected.

00:32:37 --> 00:32:39
			We need to keep them united.

00:32:39 --> 00:32:42
			And this is what will make the community

00:32:42 --> 00:32:42
			flourish.

00:32:42 --> 00:32:45
			This will make the organisation flourish.

00:32:45 --> 00:32:47
			This will make your family flourish.

00:32:47 --> 00:32:51
			And you will become a better unit because

00:32:51 --> 00:32:53
			of the fact that you are making shura

00:32:53 --> 00:32:54
			amongst yourselves.

00:32:55 --> 00:32:57
			I'd like to just hit upon one point,

00:32:57 --> 00:32:58
			one additional point.

00:33:00 --> 00:33:05
			You know when Allah SWT created Adam AS,

00:33:06 --> 00:33:08
			it is mentioned throughout the Qur'an in

00:33:08 --> 00:33:12
			a few places, he called the angels and

00:33:12 --> 00:33:13
			he talked to them.

00:33:18 --> 00:33:20
			He told the angels that I'm going to

00:33:20 --> 00:33:22
			make a vicegerent on this earth.

00:33:23 --> 00:33:24
			I'm going to make a khalifa on the

00:33:24 --> 00:33:24
			earth.

00:33:25 --> 00:33:30
			So the angels that started disputing or started

00:33:30 --> 00:33:34
			objecting gave their opinions to Allah SWT.

00:33:38 --> 00:33:41
			You making on the earth somebody who's going

00:33:41 --> 00:33:44
			to cause corruption on the earth, and he's

00:33:44 --> 00:33:46
			going to cause bloodshed?

00:33:47 --> 00:33:49
			The question is, Allah is Allah, right?

00:33:50 --> 00:33:51
			He doesn't need to talk to anybody.

00:33:52 --> 00:33:54
			He doesn't need anybody's advice.

00:33:54 --> 00:33:56
			He doesn't need anybody's opinion.

00:33:57 --> 00:33:59
			So why then did he even tell the

00:33:59 --> 00:34:00
			angels this?

00:34:01 --> 00:34:02
			Why did he tell the angels that he's

00:34:02 --> 00:34:04
			going to make a khalifa on the earth?

00:34:05 --> 00:34:08
			Some scholars are of the opinion that Allah

00:34:08 --> 00:34:12
			SWT did this to impress upon humanity that

00:34:12 --> 00:34:15
			it doesn't matter how big you are as

00:34:15 --> 00:34:18
			a human and how big your position is.

00:34:18 --> 00:34:22
			You should not proceed in making decisions without

00:34:22 --> 00:34:24
			taking opinions from your subordinates.

00:34:25 --> 00:34:28
			And Allah SWT doesn't need to take shura,

00:34:28 --> 00:34:31
			he has the wisdom and the knowledge of

00:34:31 --> 00:34:33
			everything that has ever been and will ever

00:34:33 --> 00:34:34
			be.

00:34:35 --> 00:34:37
			But yet we find him in these places

00:34:37 --> 00:34:39
			in the Qur'an consulting with the angels,

00:34:39 --> 00:34:42
			not because he needs to, but to impress

00:34:42 --> 00:34:45
			upon humanity the importance of consultation.

00:34:46 --> 00:34:48
			So these are the two things, to summarize,

00:34:49 --> 00:34:50
			istikhara and istishara.

00:34:51 --> 00:34:54
			Istikhara is seeking khayr from Allah SWT and

00:34:54 --> 00:34:57
			asking Allah SWT for guidance for what is

00:34:57 --> 00:34:59
			the thing that a person intends to do

00:34:59 --> 00:35:04
			and istishara is following up that guidance from

00:35:04 --> 00:35:07
			Allah SWT by taking advice from the people

00:35:07 --> 00:35:08
			that are around you.

00:35:08 --> 00:35:11
			And again, this concept of shura, you should

00:35:11 --> 00:35:16
			be taking advice from people that are experienced

00:35:16 --> 00:35:17
			in the particular field that you want to

00:35:17 --> 00:35:19
			take advice about.

00:35:19 --> 00:35:23
			So if you are wanting to go to

00:35:23 --> 00:35:25
			medical school, you would take the advice of

00:35:25 --> 00:35:26
			a doctor.

00:35:26 --> 00:35:29
			And if you are seeking a religious opinion,

00:35:29 --> 00:35:31
			then you would talk to a scholar.

00:35:33 --> 00:35:34
			And so on and so forth.

00:35:34 --> 00:35:36
			So depending on the person, the thing that

00:35:36 --> 00:35:38
			you want to know about and you want

00:35:38 --> 00:35:40
			to take an opinion about, that's the person

00:35:40 --> 00:35:42
			that you would talk to and that's the

00:35:42 --> 00:35:43
			person you would consult.

00:35:44 --> 00:35:47
			So both of these things, istikhara and istishara,

00:35:47 --> 00:35:49
			have been sanctioned by the Qur'an and

00:35:49 --> 00:35:50
			the sunnah.

00:35:50 --> 00:35:52
			The more we implement them inshallah, the more

00:35:52 --> 00:35:54
			goodness and barakah we will see in our

00:35:54 --> 00:35:54
			lives.

00:35:54 --> 00:35:57
			I pray that Allah SWT gives us tawfiq

00:35:57 --> 00:35:58
			to understand and practice what has been said

00:35:58 --> 00:35:59
			and heard.
